Welcome to the December 2020 edition of The 

Eckington and Killamarsh Doorsteppa. 

What a year it has been for everyone. I know a lot of 

us will be happy to see the back of 2020! Let’s hope 

we can at least enjoy a fabulous Christmas, 

surrounded by loved ones. With news of declining 

infections, and a potential safe vaccine apparently 

around the corner, we’re hoping for a fantastic 2021 

and I’m sure we’ll see the community thriving again 

before long. 

Our Monthly Focus in this issue sheds a light on a few 

terrible Christmas songs over the years, and also has 

a number of Christmas film recommendations (that 

you may never have heard of!) Check out page 17 for 

all the info. 

As 2020 draws to a close there is an opportunity to 

reflect and pay respects to those who have lost their 

lives. Barry Pritchard Funeral Services, and Lee 

Rowley MP join members of the community on the 

19th December to unveil a dedicated memorial 

bench. Please see page 21 for all the details. 

At this time of year Holly is a much coveted greenery, 

but what about Ivy? It’s usually seen as a poor relation 

and a bit undervalued. Our Gardening Section makes 

a great case for growing Ivy this year. Please turn to 

page 29 for more.

Patience is a virtue. For now be virtuous! If you feel 

thwarted at every turn simply wait it out. When life starts to move

It’s time to roll your sleeves up and crack on. The future

at least, is in a state of flux and someone may not be telling the 

whole truth. If something doesn’t add up then trust your instincts 

and be ready to stand your ground. Don’t be manipulated nor 

manipulative.

Until you face up to the truth of a situation you’ll be unable to 

move on. Honesty is always the best policy, irrespective of how 

painful it can be, and honesty with yourself is imperative. Time to 

confront your fears and take action. Fear is in the mind alone. 

What’s the worst that can happen? Nothing is ever as bad as we 

imagine. There will be surprises along the way but nothing you 

can’t handle. 

SCORPIO 24 October - 22 November 

It’s time to delegate and let others take some of the strain. 

You’re eminently capable but others, although not as thorough as 

you, can achieve the required results. Let them. An interesting 

proposition appears which does require you to read between the 

lines. It may not be everything it promises. Still, there are some 

good things to come out of it. Feel yourself held back by 

circumstances? Be patient. Something better is on its way.

You’ve seen it all before and know, instinctively, how to get 

the best of a situation. Your kindness, compassion and easy going 

attitude wins others over and brings an abundance of support your 

way. A word of caution. Do not be manipulated into doing and

token don’t try to manipulate others. Plenty of rest wherever 

possible sees you ready to move forward with purpose.

For now step away from the world and reflect on where you 

are and where you’re going. Don’t be afraid to aim high; actually, 

you should! You’re extremely capable, particularly career wise, 

and in this are entitled to receive your due. One situation remains 

a slog and can leave you weary and ready to give up. Don’t. 

Persevere and the rewards will be yours. You’re nearer to a happy 

ending than you realise. Have faith!

Take time for you. For all this is the busy season in terms of 

a certain celebration it’s important you do not burn the candle both 

ends. Listen to your body. It knows how to take care of itself. 

You’re going to need your strength and resolve over one matter 

and some interesting facts are going to come to light. Fortunately, 

this brings a far better understanding of one situation and a 

stronger relationship unfolds.

A Terrible Christmas Song! 

Forget Cliff Richard and Paul McCartney, I’ve rounded 

up the worst of the worst Christmas songs. Why not 

make a playlist and laugh along? 

Nuttin’ for Christmas. In the subset of annoying 

Christmas songs sung by particularly irritating children 

this 1955 one by a then-6-year-old Barry Gordon is a 

winner. He sings a grating ditty about all the bad things 

he did and the snitches who ratted him out. It's meant 

to be adorable but by the end you're fully in favour of 

the kid getting nothing for next decade. 

The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late) by Alvin 

and the Chipmunks. Just. No. 

Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo, from the TV series 

South Park. This makes the list because it's awful...but 

it's deliberately awful which makes it kind of 

awesome...I think. Also, if you’re going to listen to a 

terrible song from an animated show, this sets the bar. 

Same Old Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg. Where do I 

begin? First, he runs into his old high school crush at 

the supermarket on Christmas Eve. Basically, he stalks 

her through produce. She’s married, he’s a musician. 

They could just wish each other Merry Christmas and 

go their separate ways but no, they go for a drink but 

find the bars closed because people are home with 

their families (surprise!). So, they buy a six-pack, share 

it in the car and then DRIVE home. All the wrong things 

in one song. 

Finally, you HAVE to look up the video of the amazing 

Siouxsie and the Banshees (heroes of my youth) 

looking bemused and embarrassed to find themselves 

singing the children's carol Il Est né le Divin Enfant. So 

brilliantly bad I had to watch it twice.

you’ve (probably) never heard of 

Every year we rely on a handful of our favourite 

Christmas movie staples. There’s nothing like 

getting cosy with a perfect mug of hot chocolate 

and immersing ourselves in It’s a Wonderful Life, or 

Elf to set the tone of the season. 

Usually Christmas films provide a break from all the 

frantic festivities, a little welcome downtime. Well 

in 2020 we've had almost nothing BUT downtime 

and let's face it we probably watched most of our 

festive film playlist back when Halloween was 

cancelled. But I have three wonderful festive film 

suggestions you may never have seen in your life, or 

perhaps you've simply forgotten them. Enjoy. 

29th Street - This terrific comedy drama from 1991 

is actually set in 1976. It involves a lucky Italian 

American son, his unlucky hard-working father, the 

Mob, and a lottery ticket. It's an underrated gem. 

Thank me later. 

Meet John Doe - This predates It's a Wonderful Life 

by a few years but is funnier and equal in its 

feel-good factor. Introduce your teens to Garry 

Cooper and watch them swoon. 

Brazil - If you like your comedy black and dystopian 

this is the movie for you. Terry Gilliam’s Brazil is not 

just a Christmas movie, it's a Christmas movie for 

the little people; those of us trying to get by in a 

world gone temporarily more insane than usual 

without actually succumbing to insanity. Perfect for 

2020 then!

21 COMMUNITY 

As 2020 draws to a close, we take this 

opportunity to reflect, remember and pay 

respect to all in our community of Killamarsh 

and surrounding areas who have lost their 

lives this year. 

We share the deep sorrow with families who 

were unable to see their loved one in the 

weeks and months leading up to their death 

due to the hospital lockdowns and protection 

of those who were vulnerable or residing 

within care. During 2020, many families have 

been denied the basic human emotional need 

to visit, comfort, care for and simply be with 

their loved one leading up to and during their 

precious final hours and minutes prior to 

passing away. 

Following their loss and the pain of grief, close 

family had to act as gatekeepers and select 

other family members able to attend the 

funeral, and likewise, by elimination, prevent 

others who desperately wanted to attend 

from doing so. A decision no one wants to take 

due to restrictions placed upon attendance at 

funerals by the government to control the 

spread of Coronavirus. Extended family and 

dear friends all unable to attend. The best

For those attending the funeral, further 

restrictions were sanctioned to maintain a 

minimum 2 metres social distancing. The 

wearing of face masks becoming the norm. No 

empathy or sympathy could be expressed to 

comfort, reassure or simply show support – all 

basic human instincts denied. 

In these unprecedented times, many families 

are finding coping with bereavement 

exceptionally difficult. The impact of grief as a 

result of losing a close member of family or 

friends in normal times, allows for all to physically 

and emotionally interact, but not in 2020. For 

some families, being denied what should be a 

celebration of life as they or their loved one 

had planned, are now finding alternative ways 

through coming to terms with their loss and 

possibly a memorial service at a later date. 

As 2020 draws to a close, together, through 

the placing of a dedicated memorial bench, we 

remember all who have sadly lost their lives. 

We continue to pay respect and to serve families 

within the community, who together with 

their loved ones have faced 2020 with courage. 

On Saturday 19th December 2020 at 1.00pm, 

we invite families and their friends to join Lee 

Rowley, MP for North East Derbyshire, myself 

and members of my team for the unveiling of 

the dedicated memorial bench, which will 

stand proudly for many years to come outside

of a silent black-and-white film, a genre Fred would 

no-doubt remember. 

This year, 2020 brought with it an enormous set of 

challenges for everyone. 

We were devastated thinking Eckington’s Got Talent 

would not go ahead in a live venue this year. But, 

never to be defeated, we got up and got on with it. 

On May 3, a few of our Eckington’s Got Talent 

regulars got together - but apart, to create a music 

video for their cover of Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet 

Again. The started out as a special tribute to 

keyworkers’ family and friends, but their unifying 

message celebrated Captain Tom’s 100th birthday 

on April 30. The video - made in collaboration with 

Eckington Town Team - was a huge hit and we were 

so proud of all the girls who took part. 

Just days later, our talented singers and dances 

made a compilation of 1940’s songs and dances to 

celebrate VE day, 75 years since the official 

surrender of Germany to Allied forces brought WWII 

to an end in 1945. Several classics were performed, 

including White Cliffs of Dover and Chattanooga 

Choo Choo. 

While still riding on cloud nine after our amazing 

virtual shows - we couldn’t believe it when Britain’s 

Got Talent Superstars Soldiers of Swing, Lee and 

Vince sent us a message to say how impressed they 

were with the talent on show. Later that month, we 

were asked to put a special thank you together for 

Fred in form of a video with us all singing Happy 

Birthday for WWII army and navy veteran - who 

turned the grand-age of 103 on May 22. Sisters Fraya 

11, and Prue 9, performed an incredible recreation 

Our talented showmen and women blew us all away 

yet again with their video submissions for Armed 

Forces Day, and VJ Day which we shared with Capt 

Tom on his Facebook page with an audience of 95k. 

On July 7, we announced the news you’d all been 

waiting for. Eckington Got Talent would this year be 

held on line. By September 29, we had all your 

amazing entries together and our judges couldn’t 

wait for the show on October 3. 

On the panel was music producer Steve Stirland, 

Easy Street Theatre Company director Sallianne 

Foster-Major, Amanda Tyas Easy Street company 

choreographer and vocal coach and solo artist April 

Parker. 

A special congratulations goes to our winners Eva 

Marriott, 9; Imogen Clark, 14; members of dance 

troop Street Kidz Brydie, 11, and Taio, 12; and 

Thomas Pywell. A huge well done is owed to our 

runners up too, which were: lsabelle Askew, 7; Emily 

Askew, 11; dancer Jessica Maloney, 11; and Lara 

Kennedy. 

All in all, we raised an incredible £105 for Cardiac 

Risk in the Young. This makes a whopping 

grand-total of £8,849 raised for local charities over 

the nine years we’ve been putting on Eckington’s 

Got talent. So in the end we had a really successful 

year and achieved plenty. Check out Eckington’s Got 

Talent for all our achievements.

The Holly and 

The Ivy, 

When they are

Of all the trees that 

are in the wood, 

The Holly bears the crown. 

Holly is much coveted festive greenery but 

what about ivy, or Hedera to give it the 

botanical name? It makes up the trio of festive 

plants, the other being mistletoe, and frankly 

it's usually seen as a bit of a poor relation, 

misunderstood and mostly unloved. 

Yet ivy is a great workhorse in the garden. It’s 

evergreen, it attracts wildlife and is excellent 

on those north-facing walls and fences where 

nothing else seems to grow. It's not just a dark 

green cloak either; there are many cultivars 

with different leaf shapes and variegated 

foliage. The variegated varieties are great in 

those areas that catch just a little sunlight 

during part of the day as they suddenly seem 

to illuminate a usually dull spot. 

Ivy is great for disguising an ugly wall, a bare 

fence, or an old tree stump. It’s a reliable and 

self-clinging climber if you choose the right 

variety and remember to prune it correctly. 

The young climbing stems are slender and 

flexible with small aerial roots that fix the 

shoot to a surface. Adult stems are thicker, 

self-supporting and do not have roots. Unlike 

mistletoe ivy isn't parasitic so won't harm 

trees but be careful about letting it grow on 

the walls of your house as it will damage weak 

mortar and pebbledash. If growing on a 

property it needs to be clipped back in spring 

and summer, so it doesn't do any damage to 

structure underneath. Don't let it get into 

gutters because it will clog them then 

infiltrate under tiles or slates. 

Ivy is excellent ground cover. It will scramble 

over areas of poor soil and brighten the 

ground between shrubs during the dark 

winter months. Persian ivy, Hedera colchica 

‘Dentata Variegata’, is lovely because of 

its large, yellow-edged leaves. Hedera 

canariensis ‘Gloire de Marengo’ is also good. 

Its red stems and large leaves with splashes of 

yellow looks rather splendid. If you need an 

area covered quickly try Hedera Hibernica, 

which is a vigorous native ivy. 

Hedera helix is the other native ivy and this 

one has numerous cultivars including 

Goldheart, which has yellow-centred leaves, 

Green Ripple, with frilly edged leaves and 

‘Buttercup’ which is bright yellow. 

If you love to support the wildlife in your 

garden, then ivy is a terrific plant. During 

autumn and early winter adult ivies produce 

small greenish-yellow flowers. These are 

especially rich in nectar so attract bees, 

butterflies, hoverflies, and other insects, 

providing them with a place to overwinter. 

Birds like thrushes, blackbirds and robins 

enjoy the purple black berries which ripen 

from late winter to mid-spring, providing a 

much-needed winter food source. 

I hope I've made a good case for growing ivy in 

your garden. Holly might bear the crown, but 

I reckon ivy deserves a tiara at the very least!

37 HISTORY 

As we come to the end of 2020 – a year unlike any 

of us have known – people are thinking about 

Christmas and how different it will be this year. 

December 2020 marks the 80th Anniversary of the 

Sheffield Blitz when over the nights of 12th and 

15th of December, 1940 Sheffield suffered the 

worst nights of German Luftwaffe bombing when 

668 civilians and 25 servicemen were killed. A 

further 1,586 people were injured and more than 

40,000 were made homeless. Some 3,000 homes 

were demolished, another 3,000 badly damaged 

and 72,000 properties suffered harm. 

We are all hoping that we will be able to have as 

normal a Christmas as possible, but today it is 

hard to imagine, with the consumption and 

commercialisation of a modern Christmas, how 

families coped during World War Two. 

Apparently the most popular Christmas gift in 1940 

was soap! 

Entertainment in the home was provided by the 

wireless and of course singalongs and party pieces, 

card games and board game such as Ludo were 

very popular when family and friends got together 

over Christmas. Some of the most popular songs 

date from the war years such as White Christmas 

and I’ll be Home for Christmas. 

A visit from 

Father Christmas 

For many families, the most difficult part of a 

wartime Christmas would be spending the festive 

season apart from loved ones. Many men were 

fighting abroad in the armed forces, women might 

be away in the services or carrying out war work 

and many children spent Christmas away from 

home as evacuees. But, despite the challenges, 

most families managed to have a successful 

celebration. 

Rationing was in place and Christmas dinner became 

a triumph of ingenuity. Ingredients were hoarded 

weeks and even months in advance. Tea and sugar 

rations were increased at Christmas which helped 

families to create a festive meal Turkey was not on 

the menu in the war years; if you were lucky you 

might have goose, lamb or pork and a rabbit or 

home-raised chicken was a popular alternative 

with plenty of home grown vegetables. Dried fruit 

became difficult to come by, so the Christmas 

pudding and Christmas cake would be bulked out 

by breadcrumbs or even grated carrot. 

Presents were often homemade and as wrapping 

paper was scarce, gifts were wrapped in brown 

paper or newspaper. Scarves, hats and gloves 

might be hand knitted using wool unravelled from 

old jumpers that had been outgrown. Homemade 

jams and chutneys were welcome presents. 

Masks – 

1940s style 

The BBC also broadcast a special Christmas Day 

radio programme. From 1939 this featured a 

Christmas speech by King George VI, and became 

so popular with listeners that it became an annual 

ritual. 

Looking back with modern eyes at these frugal, 

‘make-do-and-mend war years, you may feel sorry 

for our parents, grandparents and great 

grandparents, but if you ask those who lived 

through the war, many will say that they look back 

fondly on their childhood Christmases. 

The wartime Christmas was for many simple 

pleasures, the company of family and friends and 

the giving and receiving of presents made with 

thought and care by loved ones.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 2020 

Unfortunately due to Covid 19, Killamarsh were 

unable to hold their usual Remembrance Day 

Parade and Church Service this year. 

However, despite strict restrictions being in place 

we were able to hold a small, reduced gathering to 

mark the occasion on Sunday the 8th of 

November. John Hall of St Giles Church conducted 

a moving service and wreaths were laid on the War 

Memorial on High Street. 

Join Lee Rowley, MP for North East Derbyshire, 

Barry Pritchard and members of his team for the 

unveiling of the dedicated memorial bench, which 

will stand proudly for many years to come outside 

55 Bridge Street, Killamarsh for future generations 

to pause and reflect in Remembrance 2020 – 

Faced with Courage. 

Mince pies, mulled wine, tea and coffee will be 

served in the branch from 1.00 pm onwards – 

everyone will be very welcome. 

CHRISTMAS 

COLOURING COMPETITION 

Bridge Street Café are holding a Christmas 

Colouring Competition – with a prize for two age 

groups – Under 5’s and Over 5’s. Pictures for the 

children to colour are £1 each and ALL proceeds 

will go to the Bluebell Wood charity. 

CHRISTMAS IN KILLAMARSH 

Come along and enjoy the Christmas events which 

are taking place in the village on Saturday the 19th 

of December 

From 11.00 am to 2.00 pm in the garden of 

Killamarsh Methodist Church on Sheffield Road, 

ten minute Nativity performances (planned as a 

monologue by the donkey) will be every 30 

minutes on the hour and half hour. A real donkey 

will be in the garden. 

Soup and a turkey sandwich will be available to 

anyone free of charge. 

A goody bag containing materials for the following 

day’s virtual Messy Church service will be given to 

the children and our annual ‘yarn bombing’ item (a 

star this year) will be given out to anyone around 

the village that day. 

Also on Saturday the 19th of December, Barry 

Pritchard Funeral Services will be placing a 

dedicated memorial bench to remember all who 

have sadly lost their lives during 2020. 

Pictures will be on sale at the door of the Café 

between 9.00 am and 10.00 am on :- Monday 7th, 

Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th December. 

Please return your pictures by Wednesday the 

16th of December. 

Lee Rowley, M.P. will be judging the competition 

on Saturday the 19th of December. The names of 

the winners will be posted on Facebook and in the 

Café window. 

AND REMEMBER - 

LET’S LIGHT UP KILLAMARSH 

I know many of you usually decorate your homes 

at Christmas – so we are asking as many residents 

as possible to decorate their homes with lights 

and/or decorations such as lights in their windows 

and/or decorations outside and in their gardens. 

Again there will be a prize for the best one. We will 

be watching and noting the houses around the 

village.

In a similar vein we have a story for children 

about what it is like to be a stranger in a strange 

land. The difference here is that Ahmet is not an 

economic migrant, but a refugee, fleeing civil 

war in Syria. 

Patsy by Nicole Dennis-Benn 

Patsy grew up in an impoverished town in Jamaica 

and struggles to make ends meet, raising her 

5-year-old daughter, Tru. But she has a dream. A 

dream that lies across the ocean in a city that 

never sleeps, watched over by Lady Liberty. She 

isn’t the only one. Many have left Jamaica for 

America, sending home details of their new lives. 

But you can’t just leave Jamaica and head to the 

US. When Patsy is finally granted a visa, it is only 

a visitor one. And just for her, not Tru. 

And so, leaving her daughter behind with her 

previously absent father, she begins her life as an 

undocumented migrant. It soon becomes clear 

that life in New York is not what she thought it 

would be. 

Dennis-Benn has created an engrossing novel 

showing the reality of the plight of migrants. 

Spanning a decade, it switches between Patsy 

and her new life and Tru’s childhood as she 

grows up without her mother. It says something 

about her skills as a writer that she has created a 

central character that is so flawed and yet likeable 

at the same time. The dialogue switches 

effortlessly between English and Jamaican 

Patois, leaving you, the reader, as an inhabitant 

of the two worlds that Patsy herself occupies. 

Will she ever be reunited with her daughter and 

how does a decision taken so long ago affect the 

two of them as life moves on around them in two 

vastly different countries? 

He arrives one day at the start of term and sits in 

a chair at the back of the class and carries a 

tattered old red backpack. He is quiet and 

spends break and lunchtime in Seclusion. The 9 

and ¾ year old narrator and their friends don’t 

know why he stays apart and are determined to 

find out why. When they finally learn of Ahmet’s 

story, they are determined to help him and seek 

the help of the one person in the country that 

they know can help: The Queen. 

A moving story this directly challenges attitudes 

towards refugees and the children encounter 

adults who are sympathetic towards his plight, 

but also those who are not. Simple events show 

the kindness of strangers (the gift of a pomegranate) 

and gives hope that this next generation can be 

the one to bring in a change of attitude and a 

realisation that we are all one humanity. All too 

often we are quick to judge – and Rauf uses a 

very clever technique to bring this to the fore, 

leaving the reader re-evaluating everything they 

have read with just a few pages to go – rather 

than accepting. Ahmet’s story is sadly not just a 

story created in an author’s imagination but is 

one that too many children are experiencing – 

tattered backpack and all.

45 RECIPE 

Moreish festive goodies – great for gifts 

Preparation time: 20 minutes plus resting time. 

Cooking time: 10-20 mins 

Makes: About 24+ 

Ingredients 

100g cold unsalted butter, cut into chunks 

100g plain flour, plus extra for flouring 

Pinch salt 

Pinch cayenne pepper 

1 heaped tsp mustard powder 

50g finely grated mature cheddar 

50g finely grated parmesan, or similar 

vegetarian hard cheese, plus a little extra 

1 egg, beaten 

Method 

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Place the 

butter and flour into a bowl of a food processor 

with the salt, cayenne, mustard powder, and 

cheeses. Rub the fat into the flour mixture then 

gradually bring the mixture together to form a 

dough. Don't add egg or water. Wrap the dough 

in cling film and leave to chill in the fridge for at 

least 30 minutes. 

Lightly flour a work surface and gently roll out 

the pastry to about 1cm thick. Cut out the 

biscuits using festive cutters. Lay them out on a 

greased baking tray about 2cm apart. You might 

need two trays. 

Brush the surface of each biscuit with the 

beaten egg and sprinkle over a little finely 

grated parmesan. Bake for 10 minutes, or until 

they are golden-brown. They smell heavenly! 

Remove from the oven and carefully lift the 

biscuits off the tray using a palette knife, then 

place on a rack to cool. They make lovely gifts 

and will keep well in a sealed container for a few 

days.
