A very warm welcome to the official show guide for what 

would have been the 2020 Tow Show. 

Unfortunately after having to cancel this year’s 

show, given the huge amount of support and 

goodwill received from our visitors, exhibitors 

and sponsors, it’s extremely evident to us what a 

considerable appetite and passions exists within 

the recovery community for our traditional industry event 

held annually at the TIC. 

It was also a real testament to all our existing sponsors and 

many exhibitors from the previous show that so many had 

already committed to being part of the 2020 event prior to 

the Covid pandemic outbreak earlier this year.

MISFUELLING 

Having built our first fuel drain unit in 2006, 

AFF have been at the forefront of the 

mis-fuelling sector for 15 years. Operating 

an ongoing development program, our van 

builds and equipment are at the leading 

edge of safety and efficiency.

collaboration with industry leaders in other 

areas of the petroleum market, we have

EV RECHARGING 

With growing pressure from the 

government, and deadlines for 2035 in 

place, the move from ICE to EV is inevitable. 

One of the major barriers for many wanting 

to switch to an EV, is range anxiety. AFF 

have been testing several options to enable 

provision of fast roadside charging, for 

drivers who have run out of charge mid 

journey. 

We are now able provide a 10 to 15 mile 

range within 30 minutes charge time, 

sufficient to drive to a fixed charging point 

from virtually any area in the UK. This 

service can also be provided on motorways, 

avoiding the need for an expensive and 

inconvenient recovery. 

BATTERIES 

Roadside battery services require safe 

working practises, testing of the customers 

current battery to establish if it requires 

disposal and competitively priced quality 

replacement batteries. 

AFF can tick all of these boxes, resulting 

in a successful outcome for your customer. 

UNLOCKING 

In recent years more and more 

manufacturers have moved to installing 

deadlock style locking systems in their 

vehicles. Great for deterring thieves, but 

not so great when one of your customers 

leaves their keys in their vehicle. 

AFF have trained and equipped our 

staff with the latest lock picking devices, 

enabling entry to the majority of vehicles on 

our roads. With this service you can expect 

the usual AFF standards of workmanship 

and consistency, in what can be a very 

inconsistent market place. 

WHEELS 

Increasingly, manufacturers are no longer 

supplying spare wheels with their vehicles. 

The result for many drivers when they have 

a puncture is that they have to rely on a 

traditional recovery service to take them to 

a tyre fitters during office hours, or during 

the weekend and evenings, onward to their 

planned destination. 

Our Universal Wheel enables us to fit a 

full sized alloy wheel and speed rated tyre, 

that has no mileage restriction, so that the 

customer can carry on their journey. We 

then arrange for the collection of the wheel 

once they’ve been able to have their own 

tyre repaired or replaced.

strategic road network (SRN). 

We manage and improve 

the strategic road network 

to make journeys safer, 

smoother and more reliable. 

Our priorities are safety, 

customers and delivery. 

Working with the recovery industry 

The recovery industry is recognised as an essential service 

and plays an important part in the day-to-day operation 

of our roads by attending and recovering broken down or 

damaged vehicles so that we can keep traffic moving. 

Highways England signed a unifying strategic partnership 

agreement with the independent recovery industry in 

March 2020 to encourage more effective communication 

and promote closer co-operation on strategic projects; 

A newly formed executive committee group put together 

by Highways England and chaired by Nick Harris, 

Highways England Executive Director of Operations, 

brings together representatives from across the recovery 

industry associations, clubs and stakeholder groups. 

Highways England is committed to working more closely 

with the recovery industry to further enhance dialogue 

between Highways England and recovery operators. The 

aim is to ensure all roadside recovery operators feel safe 

and supported when working on the SRN.

Advice for recovery operators on 

our smart motorway network 

The material we have produced 

is intended to guide you towards 

safer recovery practices built up 

from over 20 years of operating 

controlled and smart motorways, 

together with the collaborative work 

we have done together with you. 

Perhaps the most important piece 

of this advice is that you as a 

vehicle recovery operator are 

never expected to work in a live 

lane on a smart motorway and 

we at Highways England have 

procedures in place to make sure 

you never have to do so. 

We will support you by setting 

signs and signals to improve 

your safety, and allocating traffic 

officers or calling on police 

resource if required. 

Guidance has been developed 

in collaboration with, and 

reviewed by, leading recovery 

industry representatives and we 

are confident that the advice

better information to carry out

founded by business partners Richard 

Guy and Mick Vine with the ambition of

Cowan’s of Hemel Hempstead was 

established in 1972 by Mike Cowan to 

provide a 24 hour breakdown and recovery 

service for cars and light vans in the public 

domain and motoring organisations. 

Cowan’s rapidly established a reputation 

for prompt response times, excellent 

customer services and expertise in its 

field. In 1977 we had the opportunity to 

tender for the lease on Newport Pagnell 

service area, which we subsequently won. 

Initially Mike Cowan moved to the new site 

with one other member of staff. Cowan 

Recovery Limited (CMG) was formed and 

later that year we decided to close the 

base at Hemel Hempstead. 

Moving to Newport Pagnell prompted 

our expansion into the Heavy Recovery 

sector, and the company quickly replicated 

the reputation it had made for itself in the 

light vehicle sector, particularly on police 

contracts. Cowan Recovery Limited (CMG) 

changed its trading name to CMG Rescue 

Services in the late 1990’s. In 2013 the 

company changed its trading name back to 

CMG for all its activities.

growing network to support our customer 

base in their requirements. All this is fully 

supported by our back room teams dealing 

with finance and administration roles within

ADR Dangerous Goods 

Training 

With a variety of driving jobs comes 

the responsibility of requiring to move 

and transport dangerous products and 

goods. ADR is the term that relates to 

the European Agreement governing the 

international transportation of dangerous 

products through road. It is an agreement 

between most of the European countries. 

In order to be able to transport dangerous 

goods by road you would need a valid VTC 

ADR certificate once you have attended a 

training course and successfully completed 

a set of examinations in a course approved 

by the Scottish Qualifications Authority 

(SQA).

It has certainly been a strange year and it is 

a great shame that the show was not able 

to go ahead in 2020. Each year, the show is 

something that we work towards as being 

an integral part of the interaction with our 

network, which as I hope that you all know, 

is really important to LV= Britannia Rescue. 

Unfortunately, this year we have 

also made the decision alongside the 

Professional Recovery Tow Show organisers 

not to award the Lifetime Achievement 

Award for 2020. As with all years, we didn’t 

find ourselves short of candidates but we 

felt that it wouldn’t be fair to any winner 

not to experience this award in front of a 

live audience. As a result, we will continue 

the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.

We would once again like to start by 

saying a huge thank you to everyone who 

works on our network. It seems that in 

every communication we have done this 

year, we have been thanking our agents and 

their staff for the fantastic service that they 

have provided us and our customers. 

This has never been truer than this year 

and that even with all the uncertainty, 

both within the breakdown and recovery 

industry and wider world, we have seen 

our network provide some of the highest 

customer satisfaction scores that we have 

ever seen. This is truly remarkable and a 

great recognition of the importance of the 

work that you all do for our customers. 

We have tried to support our network 

throughout the year and this led to 

the permanent rate increase that we 

implemented in April. Although the COVID 

implications were still being understood, 

we felt that accelerating the permanent 

increase that was planned for the summer 

was the best way to help our network, both 

in the short and long term. 

We have also been pleased with the 

stability of the work volumes that we 

have been able to pass to the network 

throughout the year. Although the volumes 

have dropped at times from 2019, generally 

speaking we have been able to match the 

volumes we passed to the network last year. 

Throughout the year LV= and LV= 

Britannia Rescue have also been heavily 

focussed on the support we can offer to 

our staff and customers. We very quickly 

geared up for homeworking and in the 

LV= Britannia Rescue world, as we had a 

proportion of staff already working from 

home, this made the transition much easier. 

LV= also set up a Green Heart Fund, 

a support scheme for customers who 

needed assistance with their policies 

or claims due to the impact COVID had 

on them. This has helped LV= and LV= 

Britannia Rescue support customers and 

key workers when they have needed some 

additional assistance. 

Under usual circumstances, we would 

have the whole of the Network Department 

attending the show so that the wider team 

can spend time some time with the network 

and industry stakeholders. As this isn’t able 

to happen this year we are hoping that the 

virtual show will fill this void and we are also 

going to feed as much as we can back to 

the BR Claims teams, so that they can get 

an insight into the discussions that usually 

take place and the people that usually 

attend the show. 

Once again, we would just like to say a 

huge thank you to all our network for the 

work that you have put in this year. We are 

disappointed that we aren’t able to spend 

a couple of days with you but look forward 

to the show returning next year. In the 

meantime, the plan is to contact as many 

of our network as we can before the end of 

the year just to check in and if you have any 

queries you would like to speak to the team 

about, or even just to have a catch up with 

them, please feel free to contact them on 

the information below.

Welcome to Rydam Universal Ltd 

have experienced for the supply of VDZ 

kits. From early in the year just before 

lockdown we held a one day training day 

for the VDZ kit. This was supported by the 

Dutch VDZ crew who came over for the 

training day. Everyone was complimentary 

of the day with morning training, then 

lunch, finishing off with a practical “hands 

on” demonstrations with the VDZ Volvo 

4x2 Demo truck. Attendee’s took turns in 

driving with the Volvo and the VDZ kit and 

a loaded fire engine hydraulic platform as 

the casualty vehicle, heavy on the front axle 

to exaggerate the training exercise, and 

certification supplied for all the attendee’s 

A recently completed a 6 month trial 

with the highways Roadworks department 

and Highways England with the VDZ system 

was very successful. This has resulted in 

a further 3 month trial with 5 sets of VDZ 

supplied to evaluate the various safety 

properties that the system offers. There 

will be a full press release later this year, 

showing the benefits of quicker road 

clearance, safer operative working, and the 

whole safety aspect of the system. 

The in depth trial also took into account 

the safety and proof load testing, the 

heat treatment the lifting pins are subject 

to, with ongoing testing and monitoring 

of ageing pins. Next year in addition to 

the current testing there will be full TUV 

accreditation, making the whole system 

compliant to the TUV rigorous testing 

procedure. 

With the VDZ system being visibly and 

covertly security marked, it was pointed 

out to the Highways Agency the various 

counterfeit copies that are on the market 

with no testing or certification. Both 

parties are concerned as to the copies of 

VDZ appearing on the market and therefore 

ourselves and the Highways, would like 

express our concerns that only genuine VDZ 

should be used to avert any issues arising. 

To compliment the VDZ and Falkom 

recovery equipment we have designed a 

safety strop, waterproof, light to use and 

with a MBL of 57 tons. It is ideal for use 

with a single strap on un-laden recoveries 

and then used as a double unit on loaded 

vehicles. With the added advantage of being

fully fabric, there is no damage to vehicle 

bumpers and paintwork. This is currently 

being tested with excellent reports by busy 

recovery operatives. (Call us for more

Novawinch The number one winch 

manufacturer from the far east, from 

supplying military contracts to quad bikes. 

Novawinch have the largest professional 

range of winches from 500kg, to 35 ton line 

pull, all built in their own factories with their 

own staff. 

From being the manufacturer for many 

of the major winch brands, they now 

manufacture under their own brand, 

Novawinch. In August this year Novawinch 

terminated their manufacturing agreement 

with Westin Automotive, who bought the 

remnants of the old Super-winch brand. 

Due to falling orders and inconsistencies 

with Westin, Novawinch decided to solely 

manufacture under their own brand.

factory with weekly on-line meetings 

discussing new models and development 

work we are undertaking for the UK market. 

Novawinch hold all the patents, 

drawings and IP rights to a lot of the 

major manufacturer’s designs who they 

manufactured for, and are consistently 

checking on infringements of these patents 

and IP’s. 

The HEN 30,000 is a direct replacement 

for the old Superwinch H30, which a lot 

of operators are looking to for spares of 

these winches, which are not available

Arena 

One of the main highlights of every Tow Show is the amazing recovery 

demonstrations staged by the All Industry Display Team, sponsored by Boniface 

Engineering. 

Taking place daily in the Boniface Arena, this impressive display is somehow produced bigger and better 

every year. To those in the audience who take their seats to enjoy this part of the event the display is 

ultra-slick, extremely impressive and very well organised. 

This comes as a result of a huge amount of resource and coordination, with planning that starts in 

earnest a long time before the actual show takes place in Telford. 

In order to provide readers with a real insight as to what it takes to put the display together, we’ve gone 

behind the scenes with Michael Boniface who kindly gave his time with some fascinating facts as to what it 

takes getting the Boniface Arena ready for action. 

Staging realistic recovery scenarios 

Preparations for the demonstrations taking 

place during the two days of the Tow Show each 

year begin at least six months before the event. 

Vehicles both recovery and casualties must be 

identified, and a crew of recovery professionals 

assembled to undertake the tasks. 

Boniface Engineering have been sponsoring 

the demonstrations for many years, it is 

an ideal place to show the products they 

produce working, as well as an opportunity to pass 

on knowledge of both equipment and techniques to 

visitors. 

Boniface were fortunate to inherit some of the 

previous “All Industry Display Team” a group of skilled 

individuals who are prepared to give up their time 

and experience to assist Boniface in staging realistic 

recovery scenarios. The original team has been added 

to over the years with operators who have been 

interested to learn from the experience, and who 

have been prepared to operate equipment under the 

scrutiny of many experienced professionals in the 

audience, and often their employers. 

Planning starts with a collaboration with key 

individuals, decisions as to what to show and how to 

do are made early in the process. The demonstrations 

need to be relevant to what operators might 

experience in the field, for example this year one of 

the scenarios is to lift a 48-tonne crane stranded 

and out of action. This type of job would be difficult

to undertake with one vehicle, this fact works well with 

the demonstrations which frequently show two operators

available to businesses today. 

Finding a 48-tonne crane or other casualties from a 

donor who is prepared to let the display team pick them 

up or roll it over is challenging, and the logistics of having 

to move these vehicles to the site expensive. Boniface have 

benefited from the support of some good customers who 

are prepared to assist with these movements, sometimes 

bringing their own training demonstrator vehicles to the 

exhibition place. 

After the casualties are identified, the logistics organised, 

the safety aspect needs to addressed, insurance, risk 

assessment, PPE, equipment capacity, winch rope capability, 

snatch block sizes, all similar actions to those recovery 

operators deal with every day need to be addressed. Once 

completed there is a rehearsal, this happens the day 

before the show, at this time plans can change, will 

a scenario be too long? Timing is crucial, audiences 

become disinterested with a slow winching job or 

something engineeringly innovation that is difficult 

to explain, so safe efficient jobs that maintain the 

audience’s interest and are informative are essential. 

The scene is set, the designated time arrives, an 

audience assembles, circa two million pounds of 

equipment, a group of professionals, a collection 

of casualties enters the arena to what over the last 

few years has been an interesting display. Forty 

minutes later it is all over, Michael Boniface 

congratulates and thanks the team on a job 

well done and looks up at the sky and thanks 

the elements that is hasn’t rained!

An update from 


On Thursday 24th September, the 

inaugural Highways England Recovery 

Industry Executive Committee meeting 

was held. 

The newly formed executive 

committee group, put together by 

Highways England, is chaired by 

Nick Harris, Highways England Executive 

Director of Operations. It brings together 

representatives from across the recovery 

industry associations, clubs and stakeholder 

groups. 

Strengthen relationships 

The purpose of the executive committee 

is to further develop and strengthen 

relationships with representatives of the 

recovery industry. This will enable the sharing 

of information and knowledge to keep 

the recovery industry up to date with how 

Highways England is building and operating 

England’s motorways and major A roads - the 

strategic road network (SRN). The aim to is 

ensure all roadside recovery operators feel 

safe and supported when working on the 

strategic road network. 

Highways England signed a unifying 

strategic partnership agreement with 

the independent recovery industry in 

March 2020 to encourage more effective 

communication and promote closer cooperation 

on strategic projects; 

The launch of the executive committee 

demonstrates the commitment Highways 

England have made to work more closely 

with the recovery industry. 

An essential parter 

Highways England Executive Director of 

Operations, Nick Harris, said: “The roadside 

rescue and recovery industry is an essential 

partner for Highways England, helping us 

keep England’s motorways and major A roads 

moving by attending and recovering broken 

down and accident damaged vehicles. 

“The newly launched recovery industry 

executive committee builds upon our 

existing partnership and demonstrates our 

commitment to work more closely with 

the recovery industry to further enhance 

dialogue between Highways England and 

recovery operators.”
