Lighting for kitchens,

bedrooms and bathrooms

In an age where the spaces we inhabit are becoming

multifunctional with their traditional usages becoming

blurred, effective lighting design has become more

important than ever. Lighting design not only enhances

interior designs but also creates different mood spaces

within the same room and, in doing so, expands its use

and function.

In this edition of Leyton KBB we will introduce you to

the concepts needed to create different lighting moods,

show you the fittings required to realise your vision and

explain the controls available for your customers to

switch between different lighting schemes easily.

How to plan your

lighting design

The key to any successful lighting design is to lay down

different types of light in layers.

A good place to start is the background or ambient lighting.

If the room has a clear function (such as a bedroom or

bathroom) choose a brightness and colour temperature

that best suits it. If the room has many functions, you might

want to think about the use of smart lighting or secondary

lighting to replace the ambient light when it is turned off.

Next, consider the specific activities that happen in the

room. Remember, a room with a relaxed ambient light may

still require areas of strong, purposeful light. Examples of

this are reading lights in the bedroom or shaving lights in

the bathroom. This is often referred to as task lighting.

Now, look at introducing your accent lighting. Use this

light to illuminate decorative detail, colours, textures or

architectural features.

Lastly, if appropriate, add your pendant lighting. These

pieces, typically, are beautiful objects in their own right.

They may be used as ambient, task or accent lighting.

you will create a space that is lit practically, appropriately

and beautifully.

Lighting function

There are three lighting groups you need to consider when

lighting a room. Using all three will not only give you a great

overall effect but will provide flexibility to perform the wide

range of functions the room may need to accommodate. This

is especially important in kitchens. The change from a bright,

energetic light for daytime tasks, to a relaxed space after

work and through to an intimate atmosphere for evening

dining should be seamless and effortless.

Ambient lighting

Ambient lighting is a room’s overall

illumination. It takes many forms

including ceiling mounted or recessed

fixtures that direct light downwards and

wall lights and uplighters that wash both

walls and ceiling with light.

Task lighting

Task lighting is functional lighting that

helps you with everyday activities –

preparing food, reading and dressing.

Under cabinet lights, spot lights and

strip lights are all obvious examples of

task lighting.

Accent lighting

Accent lighting adds drama to a room

and can significantly affect its mood.

Careful placement of accent lighting

allows you to change the room from

a bright, energetic space to a relaxed

sanctuary instantly.

Colour & function

The colour, or temperature, of white light is an important consideration when

creating a lighting design. White light temperature ranges from warm evening

light (with a low kelvin measurement) through noon-time neutral light to bright,

cool white (with a high kelvin measurement). Each has its place in your overall

lighting scheme.

Extra warm white

In multifunctional rooms, such as

kitchens and bathrooms, a room may

need to switch between different white

temperatures. In these instances,

choosing lighting that can be changed

through WiFi enabled applications or

other devices is particularly helpful.

Choosing the right white temperature

for ambient lighting

The primary function of the room

will often help you decide on the

temperature of the ambient white light.

Rooms used at the end of the day or

spaces where you enter from the dark

tend to be more suited to a warmer

temperature colour. Entrance hallways

and living areas are good examples of

this. If it is a multifunction room, choose

a neutral white tone or a smart lighting

system that will allow you to switch

between temperatures. The physical

characteristics of the room can also

indicate the best temperature to use.

Contemporary spaces with large

flat planes are best suited to a cool

or neutral white colour, while more

traditional room designs, with expanses

of wood features, might benefit from a

warmer white temperature.

Choosing the right white temperature

for task lighting

The tone of white for task lighting

depends somewhat on the activity

undertaken. A warmer white temperature

is generally easier on the eye when

reading, but if you are cooking or

preparing food it is preferable to have a

neutral white colour so you can judge the

food's freshness or readiness to serve.

White colour and accent lighting

The choice of white colour in lighting

individual objects or spaces depends on

the object or space you are highlighting.

The temperature of white light affects

our perception of the colour it is

illuminating. It's important to bear

this in mind if you have an interior

design with a strong colour motif. A

cooler white colour looks great with

contemporary work surfaces and

chrome accessories, whereas a warm

white colour might be more appropriate

with wood and highlights gold flecks in

high gloss granite beautifully. For extra

ambience especially with dark woods

extra warm white tapes are becoming

increasingly popular.

Lighting multifunction spaces

Daytime lighting palette

Using a mix of ambient, task and accent lighting you can create

very different environments within the same room. Here's an

example of how a combination of different lighting can be used

to create a design for a daytime task-orientated kitchen.

Task – in-cabinet lighting

Automatically activated by discreet sensors when the doors

are opened, these purely functional LED spotlights do not

affect the overall lighting scheme of the room.

Ambient – ceiling spot lighting

A bright array of overhead LED spot lighting, suitable for a

busy kitchen environment, can be dimmed as the function of

the room changes.

Task – under-cabinet lighting

Under-cabinet COB spot lights provide an even illumination

across the worktop surface and the splashback.

Task – under-cabinet lighting

Strong, bright task lighting, in this instance in the form

of undercabinet RGB & White LED tape, provides a bright

continuous expanse of light for manual activity.

Evening lighting palette

Here's the same room with a different combination of lighting

activated to create a lighting design perfect for the end of the

day wind down.

Accent - above cabinet lighting

LED tape, running along the tops of these cabinets, creates a

soft wash of warm light against the back wall and ceiling.

Accent - in-cabinet and shelf lighting

A mixture of LED shelf tape housed in a recessed profile and

light fixtures remain on in this evening setting to provide focused

areas of interest and to provide a sense of depth to the room.

Accent - island lighting

LED tape is used both under the worktop surface and on the

plinth to make a feature of the island.

Accent - plinth lighting

Plinth lighting around the main body of cabinets throws light

on the floor creating a softly lit walkway.

Lighting control

As multifunctional, open spaces have become more commonplace in room design

so the need to change the mix of ambient, task and accent lighting throughout

the day has become more important. Altering this mix manually can be time

consuming and laborious. By using the right control technologies you can

effortlessly switch between combinations of light and completely transform the

mood and function of a room in an instant. Here are a few of the ways to control

your lighting schemes.

Automatic control

This ranges from simple switches and sensors that

activate lighting inside a cabinet when the door is opened,

to sophisticated gestural control sensors that can control

the brightness of light depending how close your hand is.

These controls are not only functional and practical, but

deliver light on demand without upsetting the ambient

mood of the room.

Dimmers

Dimmers are still a very useful way of controlling large

areas of light simply and intuitively. Our latest range

of LED drivers now enable you to control LED lighting

consistently and sensitivity from a standard wall

dimmer. This is a breakthrough for LED lighting and

can be used with your room’s ambient lighting or with

groups of accent or task lighting.

Four zone control

A great balance between simplicity and flexibility, four

zone or scheme dimming controls allow you to adjust

the brightness, colour temperature and colour of

lighting in up to four different zones, either individually

or collectively. The controls can be either wallmounted,

remote or app controlled. The wall-mounted

panel works wirelessly with a receiver, and has a range

of 20m for the remote control.

Home automation systems

The ultimate in lighting control. With the correct

interfaces, our LED lighting can seamlessly integrate

with home automation systems such as Lutron

and Rako. These advanced systems also integrate

with other technology allowing you to change your

visual environment at the touch of a button. These

can automatically change to suit the time of day or

even the season.

Smart control

One of the biggest recent advancements

in lighting has been the use of WiFi

to control lighting units. Most of the

LED lighting in this KBB book can be

integrated into a WiFi network with

a controller that simply plugs into

the lighting driver. You can find these

controllers on page 93.

Once on a WiFi network there are a

couple of different ways to program

and control your lighting. A variety of

standalone operating platforms exist

in lighting eg Wiz. However, for ease

of use these can all be simultaneously

controlled via a voice control app such

as Amazon Alexa or Google home.

Whichever control device you choose to

use, they will not only give you complete

control over the light's brightness,

temperature and colour but will

also enable you to program different

combinations of lighting that can be

activated instantly.

LED tape and profile

LED tape is increasingly playing a bigger part in lighting

for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. Its versatility and

durability make it ideal for all kinds of lighting environments;

from high lumen task intensive areas through to low lumen

accent lighting to highlight the rooms architectural features.

With the use of an appropriate profile, tape can be elegantly

mounted or recessed on or into surfaces and with the

use of the right diffuser, the light from the tape can be

altered to achieve a desired effect, or even be hidden

against dark surfaces.

The colour of LED tape

White LED tape, as the name suggests,

provides a consistent bright, dimmable

white light, which is available in range of

temperatures from extra warm through

to cool white.

Coloured LED tape is able to create

millions of colours. By using three

chips (red, green and blue) it works

in a similar way to your television or

computer screen. Each diode can be

controlled independently to create the

perfect colour to match your mood.

Some of our RGB LED tapes have

an extra white diode which makes

switching to white light happen

instantly. This is ideal in rooms that

have multiple uses where switching

between a functional and recreational

environment happens frequently.

The brightness of LED tape

The brightness of LED tape is most

easily expressed as watts per metre.

The higher number of diodes per metre

the higher the wattage. Chose low watt

per metre tape for low level ambient

or accent lighting and high watt per

metre tape for task lighting and sight

critical environments.

Side emitting LED tape

This LED tape emits light from its edges

rather than from its surface. It creates

light that is parallel to the surface it is

attached to. This is particularly useful for

lighting around curved worktops and for

uplighting curved architectural features.

Dotless and seamless light

The fewer diodes per metre in LED tape

the more likely the individual diodes may

be seen. This becomes an issue if the

tape is reflected in a high gloss surface,

such as a highly polished worktop or

floor. Dotless LED and seamless tapes

have a high wattage and diode count per

metre. When dotless tape is used with an

appropriate profile and diffuser it creates

an almost pure strip of light where the

individual diodes are not visible. Seamless

tape creates the same intense strip of

dotless light but without the need for a

profile and diffuser. This makes it ideal

for curved surfaces.

IP rated LED tape

An IP rating is a measurement of the

protection an item will have against

the ingress of dust, dirt and water.

IP rated LED strips come with a silicone

coating making them waterproof to

varying degrees.

A higher IP rated tape is ideal for

installing in kitchens, wash-up areas,

bathrooms and wet rooms. A lower rated

tape is suitable for tape that might need

cleaning with a damp cloth or where it

might be splashed with water.

Below: the easiest way to choose the

right level of brightness for your tape is by

comparing the relative watts per metre.

A. 2.4w per metre – is well suited for soft

accent lighting such as plinth lighting.

B. 4.8w per metre – stronger area accent

lighting and ambience.

for task lighting especially under-cabinet.

creating any dot reflection. When used in

clean continuous pure strip of light without

Types of LED tape profile

and their use

Recessed

These profiles can be integrated

into many different materials and

provide discreet housing for LED tape.

Particularly useful for minimalist

designs or where, for practical

reasons, the tape needs to sit

flush with the surface.

Surface

In some areas where the profile will

be less visible, for example, behind

a pelmet or over a cabinet, there is a

practical advantage in fixing the profile

and housed tape to the surface.

Specialist

Tape can even be housed in profiles

specifically designed for other functions.

These include hanging rail profiles and

profiles that can bend to match curves or

plastered into walls or ceilings.

Plaster In

Combining this profile and dotless

tape creates a stunning clean

light in newly plastered walls.

Our black diffuser can be used with our

recessed or surface mounted profile.

When the tape is off, the effect is a

discreet lighting solution that is perfect

It is important to ensure that all bathroom lighting is well

protected from water, either directly or in the atmosphere.

The IP rating scheme is a standard that rates a light's

suitability for use in wet conditions. The specific rating

depends on the proximity to water sources. All of our

bathroom lighting has a minimum rating of IP44 with

some downlights rated IP65, ideal for use in showers.
