Rugby stalwart chalks up award

CHRIS ‘CHALKIE’ Hall
now happily finds himself on
the sidelines, after keeping
errant players in those
confines for 17 years as a
stalwart of the Ellesmere Rugby
Sub-Union.
The long-term judiciary
member and former chair,
Hall has stepped back from
administrative roles with the
sub-union, though rest assured
the 73-year-old will continue
to keep a close eye on rural
rugby.
Hall’s contribution to the
code, and competition, was recognised
with a life membership
at Ellesmere’s annual awards
function last week.
The accolade capped a fitting
send-off for Hall, who described
himself as only an ‘average’
player and division two coach
for his beloved Lincoln.

Police bid
to clamp
down
on drink
drivers

POLICE WILL be breath-testing
everyone they pull over in the
district throughout summer to
stop drink drivers.
Officers have noticed an
increase in drink driving in
the last few months and, as a
result, checkpoints will also
be out in force across all of its
towns.
This is part of the ‘that’s a fail’
campaign reminding people of
the risks that drink driving
creates.
The drink driving limit is
250mcg/l and zero for people
under 20 years old.
Selwyn Times reported last
month seven people were charged
with drink driving over Labour
Weekend, including three with
breath alcohol levels more than
1000mcg/l.
One of these drivers crashed
into a fence in Darfield.
In July, a motorist with a
breath alcohol level of 1068 mcg/l
crashed into a bridge in Tai
Tapu in a company car. He was
miraculously uninjured.

reputation of being a fair but
no-nonsense operator.
That’s the kind of
individual you want in a
judicial role in a smallish
catchment area like
Ellesmere where most people
know each other.
Chalkie says the number
of on-field incidents have
diminished because of video
cameras.
Spectator abuse is now
more prevalent, and that
needs to be stamped out.

BUILDING PROJECTS may
be slower than normal due to
record numbers of building
consent and Land Information
Memorandum applications
across the district.
Building consent applications
have continued to rapidly increase,
with 235 consents issued
and 1775 inspections completed
in November.
The district council is on track
for a record year, with 2800
building consents and 19,000
inspections being completed.
Said district council building
manager Vanessa Mitchell: “We
are experiencing a 20 per cent
increase on building consents
over what we have received in
the past – even over and above
what we had during the height
of the earthquake rebuild. The
majority of these applications
are for new homes which is also
a change from previous months.
“We’re committed to getting
things done as quickly as we
can, but we do need people to be
aware that if you’ve got a build
nearing completion we can’t
guarantee we’ll be able to issue
your code compliance certificate
by Christmas. Especially as we
are now seeing supply chain
issues impacting the ability for
builders to fully complete the
work.”
Applications for LIM reports
have also hit record levels,
increasing by 20 per cent compared
to last year. People are
being advised to allow at least 15
days for a LIM to be processed,
due to the increased demand.

The volume and complexity
of building consent and LIM
applications mean it is taking
longer than usual to process
them.
Mitchell said residents should
allow extra time to organise
these – particularly at this time
of year when they are in high
demand.
“Our staff are putting in huge
hours and we’re working with
other councils and the industry
to get additional support, but
we do need people to be patient
with us.
Mitchell said finding qualified
and experienced people with the
relevant skills and knowledge on
building control functions has
been difficult.
To address the increasing
workload, the district has hired
additional staff in recent months
and had extra processing
and inspecting help from
Christchurch City, Waimakariri
District, Napier City councils
and contractors.

ROADING PROPOSALS
People have until Friday to give
feedback on proposed roading
changes in West Melton. The draft
design is focused around the State
Highway 73, the Weedons Ross
Rd intersection, and nearby side
roads including West Melton Rd.
Changes proposed include new
traffic lights, cyclist and pedestrian
facilities and a new link road and
roundabout. People can view the
draft design and leave feedback

team will make any necessary
changes to the design and look
to start construction late next

DISTRICT PLAN FEEDBACK
Residents have until Friday to give
feedback on the proposed Selwyn
District Plan. The consultation
period ends at 5pm. The plan will
outline the rules for what residents
can or can’t do in the district
and what may require a resource
consent from the district council.
It will aim to take account the
continuing growth of the district
and set the rules and policies for
where that growth should occur.
Some of the topics people can give
feedback on include what sort of
building they want to see in the
district, what kind of businesses

“Over the last few months
we’ve seen an increase in
drink drivers and, obviously,
some of the readings have been
very high. So, as a result, we’re
putting a focus on drink drivers
over the Christmas holiday
period.
“If anybody is stopped by
police driving a car they will be
breathalysed.”
Between 2017 and 2019, 312
people in the district were
charged with drink driving,
including 137 in Rolleston, 77
in Lincoln, 59 in Leeston, 34 in
Darfield, and five in Arthur’s
Pass.
Pickover said the excuses
motorists give when they are
found to be over the limit tend
to be very similar and said:
“Nothing really changes.”
The most common responses
are that they’ve only had one or
two drinks, they didn’t realise
they were over the limit, or they
have had less to drink than their
passengers.
Pickover said these excuses
don’t often hold up when
people are taken through strict
procedures to determine how
much alcohol is in their systems.
These procedures start with
police making drivers count to 10
into a breath testing device.
If this indicates alcohol is
present, the driver is required
to blow into a tube and if the
breath alcohol reading is over
250mcg/l the driver is required to
provide police with two samples
of breath at a police station or
booze bus.

enjoy catching up with friends

a drink driving conviction or
causing a crash has lifelong

“We’re reminding people to

Annie Spring’s past
comes to light
Reader Stephen Wright
responds to last week’s
Selwyn Times article asking
for information on Barbara
Hind’s grandmother
Annie Spring, who lived in
Weedons in the mid-1900s.
Hind lives in England and
has never been to New
Zealand but wants to know
more about Annie, who
moved from England to
New Zealand some time
between 1921 and 1928
and married John Spring
I’M WRITING an in-depth
railway history of Rolleston and
Weedons.
The Annie Spring article filled
some important gaps for me.
Annie has already featured
in a couple of train-related
anecdotes (she used to catch
the train into Christchurch
from Weedons station), plus her
husband John is recalled in one
detailed set of memories.
I’ve been contacting seniors
who grew up at Weedons, I’ve
made a point of asking them
about Annie, as she certainly
sounded like quite a character.
I can tell Barbara where the
Springs’ farmed (it was Crownleased
land at Weedons) and
other members of the Spring
family had an interest in it.
I can also explain who Muriel

in Weedons have been

Feast was. She was the wife of
Harry Feast, a member of the
local track gang, ie: the men who
looked after the railway tracks.
From 1941 they lived in a
railway house situated between
Weedons and Rolleston on Jones
Rd. When it became surplus to
railway department requirements,
that house was shifted
to a farm in the area around 60
years ago.
Recently, I spoke to the wife
of Muriel Feast’s grandson,
as she is helping with details
about the Feast family, as well as
other family history relating to
Rolleston.

DURING November, 31,380kg
of contaminated recycling in the
district was sent to landfill.
This was seven per cent of all
recycling loads collected in this
time period.
As a result, a team of four have
been employed by the district
council’s kerbside collection
contractor Waste Management
for the next six months to make
sure residents recycle correctly.
This will cost $87,000.
District council solid waste
manager Andrew Boyd said the
most common items wrongly recycled
last month were soft plastics
like bags and plastic wrap,
dirty plastic items like household
containers, toys, buckets, hose
pipe, clothing, steel items, sanitary
pads, nappies and food.
In cases where people are
found by the team consistently
put out large quantities of items
that can’t be recycled, the district
council may consider removing
bins from households.
However, Boyd said the focus
will be on educating people first.
Where there is a small amount
of contamination, the bin will
still be collected, but the crew
will leave an information tag
on it letting people know which
items could not be recycled.
If there is a large amount of
contamination, bins won’t be
collected that week and people
will be advised about the contamination.
Said Boyd: “This is so we can
avoid contaminating the rest of
the recycling load, and having to
send it to landfill.”
The contamination crew will
help by providing guidance on
how to improve recycling habits.
“We’re dedicated to looking
after Selwyn by doing our best
with rubbish and recycling.
We’re not out here to tell people
off, we want to help people to
recycle right, and providing advice
directly should help to clean
up the recycling,” Boyd said.

New Rolleston library
project progressing
THE ROOF has been installed on
Te Ara Ātea, the new library for
the Rolleston town centre.
Work has begun on fitting the
building’s windows and sliding
doors, including the large second
floor windows that will provide
views across Rolleston and out to
the Southern Alps, along with the
internal walls.
The 2200 sq m, multi-storey
building is due to be finished late
next year.
It will house the new Rolleston
Library, along with community
spaces, exhibition areas, a
workshop room, tamariki area
and Waka Huia, a quiet room
with a museum-quality display

completed in early March next

Family welcomed by community
The Faces of Selwyn exhibition was launched last year
and a new set of 12 stories about people in the district
are on display at Selwyn Libraries. The stories, written
by Hayley Tate, celebrate diversity and highlight the
differences in people’s backgrounds and journeys to
Selwyn. Selwyn Times continues its coverage.
Tania Libin
LIFE WAS very different for
Tania Libin seven years ago,
living with her parents in Kochi,
India, studying for her Master’s
degree and working at the same
time.
It was Tania’s dream to go
abroad and that’s when her parents
found a husband for her in
Libin, who was working in New
Zealand. Libin moved to New
Zealand 12 years ago. They married
in 2012 and Tania joined
him in Hanmer Springs in 2013,
before moving to Christchurch
for work opportunities.
Due to earthquake repairs, the
couple were constantly moving
houses, and were keen to find
somewhere to settle in their
dream house.
They had a few friends living
in Selwyn who loved the quietness
and growing residential area
and decided they also wanted
to escape from the city lifestyle,
buying land in Rolleston to build
on.
It was a busy year as they
moved into their new home in
2016, had their little girl Evalynn
Eliza and had their parents coming
over from India to be a part
of the happiness.
“We really wanted to have our
own place with our beautiful
garden and my husband loves
fish, so he really likes to have his
own monster aquarium inside
the house. We just decided this
place is good for us.” Tania said.
Growing up in India, Tania
had a strong connection with
her family, but since coming
to Rolleston, the community
around her has made her feel at
home.
“This place is amazing, such
a welcoming place. If you need
any help you just yell at your
neighbours and they come out
anytime to help you.”
In line with Tania’s description
of the area, the district council
has recently been accredited as
a welcoming community by Immigration
New Zealand, following
events such as CultureFest

and Citizenship Ceremonies,
along with work to make courses
and services accessible to different
communities.
Tania said Selwyn is the best
place to bring up her daughter,
with a five-minute walk to
school, plenty of friends in the
area and a church nearby.
If the weather is nice, she goes
on walks around Rolleston with
Evalynn. When they return
home, Evalynn goes over to the
huge aquarium in the lounge and
calls out to “Marco” her pet eel
who will be hiding in his tunnel
and feed him along with her
dad’s monster arowana fish.
Tania is passionate about her
cooking. She loves trying new
recipes and introducing them
to her followers in her Facebook
page “Melting Moments
Kitchen”.
Tania has also set up her
own event planning business
last year helping create and set
up birthday parties, weddings
and decorations for private or
cultural events.
She has created a Facebook
page for her business ‘Cats Eye
Event Planners’ to help busy
parents organise and make
their little one’s special day
memorable.
In 2019, Tania passed the
final milestone and became a
New Zealand citizen. She says
it was a different feeling to
surrender her old citizenship, but
she is happy to now be a part of
New Zealand.

committee for 17 years, I was the

we’ve got video evidence these

“That tends to tone things
down a bit because they’re well
aware there could be a video
camera operating.”

falls under the judicial

“It’s fairly high on the agenda
of any rugby organisation, sideline
behaviour . . . citing spectators
for abuse directed at referees

depart with rugby in good

“Rugby’s fairly buoyant in
Ellesmere, we’ve got close to
5000 players. The area’s growing,
there’s more people coming into
Rolleston, Lincoln and Prebbleton.
Prebbleton has more than 30
teams,” he said.

Trailer thefts on the
rise – use a GPS tracker

OVER THE last few
weeks we have had an
increase in thefts of trailers
throughout the district.
A total of 11 have
been stolen within the
Canterbury Rural Policing
area which also covers
the Waimakariri and
Hurunui.
In Selwyn we have
had trailers stolen from
Rolleston (3), Darfield
(2), Arthur’s Pass (1), and
Leeston (1).
Stolen trailers include
boat trailers, jet ski trailers,
and home-built trailers.
Crime prevention
advice
Look at where you park
your trailer. Always ensure
that it is in a secure and
locked location when not
in use, or at the very least it
should be out of sight.
For security there are a
number of devices you can
use to deter thieves.
Coupling locks are
easy to use and can be
used on a large variety of
trailers. They can also be
used when your trailer is
attached to your vehicle
(if you have to leave the
trailer attached to the car
somewhere).
Other options are wheel
clamps, these are heavy but
are very hard to remove
and act as a visual deterrent.
You could also weld or
engrave your driver licence
number somewhere on the
trailer so its easily identifiable.
We have had previous
success with GPS trackers
that have been installed
on trailers, these are easily
tracked and the latest models
are very accurate.
Police encourage the
public to always report
crime and if you have
something stolen and
notice it for sale or find out
where it is, always advise
police as it gives police the
opportunity to fingerprint
and also look for any other
forensic evidence, this
enables us to hold the offenders
to account.

have apprehended a number
of offenders.
• A male arrested for
burglary after information
from the public helped us
locate him stealing copper
piping in Prebbleton.
• Two males were arrested
after they stole a
motor-cycle from an address
in the Leeston area.
All of these offenders
were from Christchurch.
During the last week we
have also had a number
of stolen cars dumped in
the Selwyn area. One was
recovered in Lincoln just
off Birchs Rd and the other
was in Rolleston township.
We are still getting
vehicles broken into across
the district.

MANY INSECTS are
rarely seen because they are
either nocturnal or because
they are small and cryptic.
THe minute scavenger
beetle (Cartodere bifasciata)
is one such species.
THeir small 2mm long
size and yellow-brown
in colour with four to six
dark blotches on their hard
elytra or wings make them
very hard to spot.
THe beetle lives in soil,
leaf-litter, carrion, dung,
decaying bark or material
such as straw, compost,
manure heaps and
haystacks.
THis beetle is native to
Australia but was initially
introduced into Europe

National pride on the
line at golf World Cup

WALES, REPRESENTED by a
single competitor Mike Youds,
won Lincoln Golf Club’s first
World Cup tournament on
Sunday.
Youds scored 34 stableford
points to get the victory.
The tournament saw golfers
representing countries based
on their birth or heritage,
including New Zealand, England,
Scotland Wales, Ireland, Sri
Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and
Australia.
The winning team was based
on the average stableford points
scored by the golfers representing
their particular country.
The women’s individual trophy
was won by Jules Dorrian, who
represented New Zealand and
finished with 34 stableford points,
and the men’s by Ivan Fletcher,
representing Scotland, who
recorded a score of 37 stableford
points.
Club member Bill Campbell
said a highlight of the day was
when Gary Shirley birdied a par
three hole.
The competition was organised
by John Renall and Campbell said
members are keen for it to be held
again next year.

Have a say on new rule book
EVERY 10 years we review the
Selwyn District Plan, but it’s not
just down to the district council
to review it we need your help to
get it right.
We’ve put together a proposal
for the direction we think we
should be going in and in early
October we published it on our
website. There are just a few
more days left to let us know
what you think about our proposed
plan.
The District Plan is basically a
‘rule book’ for what you can, or
can’t do in the district. It lets you
know what activities you need to
talk to the district council about
as you might need a resource
consent before going ahead and
doing it. These rules keep us all
safe, make sure nobody does
anything that will conflict with
harmony of your surroundings
or neighbourhood, and
preserves what’s important to us
from trees to cultural or historical
features.
Much has changed since the
last time we reviewed the district
plan. We’ve grown, faster than
most of New Zealand, and I
can’t see that growth slowing
down. In response to this
growth, we need to plan where
we allow more housing, business
and industry development to
happen.
This new plan makes sure that
we continue to grow in a way
that meets your needs and those

of people moving to join in the
great lifestyle and opportunities
we have.
The plan provides a framework
for growth which unlocks
the economic potential of our
district in a sustainable way over
the next 10 to 15 years. It makes
clear where we want townships

moving house, building on
your land, starting a business,
subdividing or even want to
find out the risks to your house
from a natural disaster, like a
one-in-200-year flood, we’d
appreciate you looking over the
proposed plan and giving us
your thoughts.
We’re even proposing changes
that will allow you to let your
family flat to people outside your
whānau.
We all live in zones, and what
we can do in each zone is really
important. At the moment there
are far too many zones and we
want to make it simpler to understand
which zone applies to
you. This will also make it easier
to understand the freedoms you
have in your zone to do stuff
without asking for district council’s
permission.
Many people from across
Selwyn have already made a
submissions on the proposed
changes and we’ll take time
to carefully consider each and
every response, but we want to
hear more.

First courts in place at
Selwyn Sports Centre
The first courts have been completed at the Selwyn Sports Centre.
The four poured polyurethane courts (similar to many school gyms) have been laid and the lines
painted on last week as the building continues on track to open for the 2021 winter sports season.
The courts will be a multi-use space, with the markings set up for basketball, netball, futsal, tennis,
korfball, floorball and a host of other sports, while the surface will also allow the space to be used
for exhibitions and events. This hall will also host an interactive sports and educational wall.
Selwyn Netball has also agreed with the Council that it will use the centre for the 2021 winter
season and beyond. Selwyn Netball Centre President Andrea James confirmed it will use the
centre for its year 1 to 4 programme and its Saturday competition will be split between the
Selwyn Sports Centre and the court facilities in Lincoln. In addition, a community indoor netball
competition open to the wider Selwyn community will be held at the Selwyn Sports Centre.
The centre will have a focus on serving the community, including clubs and schools, and will
feature two halls with four courts each, divided by a central corridor space.
In addition to the poured polyurethane courts, the John F. Reid Courts on the other side of the
building will host four courts with a sprung wood floor, which is currently being laid. This hall will
have courts for basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball and badminton, while a mezzanine around the
top of the hall will feature a 240 metre walking track.
The building features insulated Kingspan panelling, which provides both high quality insulation
and removes the need for internal cladding. It will also have solar panels that will generate up to
80 percent of its expected power consumption during summer.
Council urges patience as record consent
numbers continue
The Council is encouraging people to be patient and plan ahead as it continues to receive record levels
of building consent and Land Information Memorandum (LIM) applications.
The volume and complexity of building consent and LIM applications mean it is taking longer than usual
to process applications.
People should plan ahead and allow extra time for LIMs and building consents, including Code of
Compliance Certificates—particularly at this time of year when we typically experience high demand for
building consents, Council Building Manager Vanessa Mitchell says.
“Our staff are putting in huge hours and we’re working with other councils and the industry to get additional
support, but we’re asking customers to be patient with us. We’re committed to getting things done as
quickly as we can, but we do need people to be aware that if you’ve got a build nearing completion we
can’t guarantee we’ll be able to issue your code compliance certificate by Christmas. Especially as we are
now seeing supply chain issues impacting the ability for builders to fully complete the work.”
Building consent and LIM applications are at record highs – up 20% on 2019 and higher than the peaks
seen during the height of the earthquake rebuild – and the Council is on track to complete a record
2800 building consents and 19,000 inspections for the year.
To address the increasing workload, the Council has hired additional staff in recent months and had
extra processing and inspecting help from Christchurch City Council, Waimakariri District Council,
Napier City Council and contractors.
However, people are advised to allow at least 15 days for a LIM to be processed.
Mrs Mitchell says customers can also help the Council manage the workload for building consents
efficiently by:
· loading documents correctly into AlphaOne
· ensuring sites are ready from 7.30am on the day of inspections - inspections will still be charged if the
site is not ready for a booked inspection
· using AlphaOne to check the status of consents and inspections
· letting the Council know early if they need help with their application
· paying for consents when they’re issued, or advising if a project is not going ahead
· ensuring all required documents are uploaded at least the day before the relevant inspection – this is
particularly important for final inspections to streamline the code compliance process.
Tonnes taken at recycling days
The recent Malvern and Ellesmere Recycling Drop-off Days proved
popular once again with the local communities.
The two recycling days, held in November, helped people to recycle
more than 20 tonnes of items.
Over the two days, 220 vehicles dropped off 14,300 kg of garden
waste which will now be composted, as well as 9,000 kg of scrap
metal, over 100 tyres and 35 TVs which will now be recycled.
This year’s recycling days were the first events to include the option
to bring bulky waste items to be taken to landfill. Residents took
advantage of this, bringing in a combined total of over 5,000 kg of
furniture, couches, chairs, desks and carpets.
Council Solid Waste Manager Andrew Boyd says the intent of
the days was to provide a pop-up transfer station, which is more
convenient for residents further away from the recovery park to
recycle these items.
It is good to see the community embracing the recycling days, he says.
“We’re really pleased to see how keen people are to recycle and how
well these days are serving the community. We can see from the huge
quantities of items people are dropping off that there’s a lot of value
in these events and that the community appreciate them. It’s nice to
see people’s passion in these areas for recycling and protecting our
environment and that we can support them to do that.”
The Council made a donation to The Selwyn Heritage Centre and
the Malvern Lions, who helped out with running the days.
Volunteer thank you dinner
A chance to say thank you and celebrate the hard work of some of
the Council’s unsung supporters was celebrated last week.
The annual Council volunteers thank you dinner was celebrated
at Darfield Recreation and Community Centre with the Council
taking the opportunity to thank around 160 volunteers who
support the Council’s work, including library volunteers, members
of community committees and members of the Council-run Civil
Defence Response teams.
The Mayor and councillors served canapes and Mayor Sam
Broughton entertained by leading a round of Christmas carols.
It was a privilege to be able to say thank you to the volunteers in
person, he says.
“We have so many amazing volunteers at the heart of our
community here in Selwyn. We have seen their value even more
in this tough year that was made easier by so many community
groups and individuals stepping up to serve others.”

Stimulus funding to support Darfield Kirwee
development
Government stimulus funding will be used to support long-term development of the waste water
network in Darfield and Kirwee.
The Council has received a $10.66 million grant in government stimulus funding to bring forward
important wastewater, drinking water or stormwater projects and to help support COVID-19 recovery.
The funding was provided to councils as part of the government’s Water Services Reform with the
Council agreeing to collaborate and share information with the government and other councils to
discuss options for forming new entities to manage drinking water, wastewater and stormwater.
The funding will be put towards installing a waste water pipeline from Darfield and Kirwee to the Pines
Waste Water Treatment Plant at Rolleston.
The pipeline is a precursor to a planned, staged approach to reticulation in the Darfield and Kirwee area.
The extent of that programme will be decided through the Long-Term Plan 2021-2031 in consultation
with the Darfield and Kirwee communities.
Council Infrastructure Group Manager Murray Washington says the Council is now in the early design
phase for the pipeline. Under the conditions of the funding the work must be completed by March 2022.

On the Roads
Leeston Road has extensive road works and delays are expected until 18 December.
Leeston Road is closed at the intersection with Station Street for work on the Leeston
stormwater bypass and traffic control is in place outside of Doyleston and Irwell village.
Priority is given to the peak traffic flow. The works are to facilitate seal widening, storm
water upgrades and a new sewer main between Doyleston and Leeston.
Stabilising work is taking place on Ellesmere Road and pavement repairs are taking place on Jones
Road. Traffic management is in place.
Dryden Avenue is closed to traffic exiting into Rolleston Drive for work on the Dryden Avenue, Rolleston
Drive, Norman Kirk Drive intersection. A detour is in place.
Gerald Street, Lincoln, will be closed from James Street to West Belt from 8am–12pm Saturday 12
December for the Lincoln Christmas Parade. There will be a rolling closure along Kildare Terrace, North
Belt and West Belt reopening as the last float passes.

Spice up your garden with chillies

THERE ARE two types of vege
gardeners – those who grow chillies,
and those who don’t.
Actually, this spicy statement
could really apply to many other
‘polarising’ plants – like coriander
for starters. But I’m proudly in
team chilli and think they make
a great addition to any summer
vege garden.
What I really like about growing
chillies, is their high harvest
to space in your garden ratio.
Meaning one plant can easily
produce around 40 chillies, while
only occupying the same space
in your garden as a couple of lettuces.
Planting wise, chillies are
pretty easy to grow. They prefer a
warm climate, so early summer
is the perfect time to be planting
your seedings. They’ll want a
sunny, well-drained spot in your
garden. If you’re into companion
planting (where plants help each
other in the garden), pop them
next to your capsicums, kohlrabi
and celery.
Chilli varieties are measured
on the Scoville scale, which ranks
their heat. At the lower ends of
the scale are the red-hot peppers
and jalapenos. These fruit (chillies
are technically a fruit) start out
green and as they ripen to red,
increase in hotness. Next up the
scale are habanero and ghost
pepper (Bhut Jolokia) chillies,
and at the very top is the Carolina
Reaper, which can blow up your
mouth with only a sliver.
Once you’ve got your seedlings,
plant them in holes 5cm deep and
30-60 cm apart, depending on
planting instructions. Give them
a good initial watering, and then
after this only every few days.
Remember to mulch around the
plants, and give a feed of fertiliser
when they start to fruit, to ensure
the best possible harvest.
In two to three months, you’ll
start to have chillies appearing.
Cutting (rather than plucking) the
chillies will encourage the plant to
continue to produce. Once they
start to redden up, reducing their
watering will also help increase the
heat of the chillies.
Chillies are perennials,
meaning if treated well and in
a warmer climate, can spice up
your garden for many years.
Come winter, give your plant a
good prune back, and if it’s in a
HEAT: Pick the temperature of the
chillies you would like before planting.
They can be easily grown in pots.
pot, lift off the ground or under
the eaves of the house to protect
it. When the conditions are right,
you’ll get fruit a lot earlier the second
year too.
Last year I made own chilli
dust, from drying the chillies
out and then grinding them
up. Which I’d describe as highly
satisfying, just remember to label
it though – chilli dust can look a
bit like cinnamon, but isn’t great
in your baking.

pork a little differently
this year, after all, 2020
has been very different.

brunch, try macaroni
cheese with a difference

Roast pork from the oven or rotisserie
Hornado de chancho
marinated roast pork leg
Ingredients
4½ kg pork, leg, boned and
rolled (ask your butcher to do
this for you)
2 tbsp ground cumin
2 tbsp sea salt
1½ tbsp ground paprika
2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
4 limes, juice only
3 bottles lager, 330ml each
80g butter, melted
Marinated roast pork leg will make a tasty treat for Christmas Day. Macaroni and cauliflower cheese will make an
effortless, fun meal for Boxing Day.
Directions
Use a small sharp knife to score
the skin of the pork and make several
deep incisions in the pork leg.
Place in a non-reactive tray.
Combine the garlic, cumin, salt,
paprika and pepper in a bowl.
Pour the lime juice over the
pork and rub into all sides, then
rub the spiced garlic paste over the
pork, pushing it into the incisions.
Cover and leave to marinate in
the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours.
Pour the beer over the pork,
cover and return to the refrigerator
to marinate for a further 12 to
24 hours, turning occasionally so
that the leg marinates evenly.
If you don’t have a rotisserie the
park will cook in a normal oven
using the same time frame.
Preheat a gas barbecue fitted
with a rotisserie to 200 deg C. All
the burners should be turned to
medium.
Insert the rotisserie rod lengthwise
through the leg of pork,
ensuring the pork leg is evenly
balanced. Secure the rotisserie spit
according to the manufacturer’s
instructions.
Turn off the burners directly underneath
the pork, leaving the side
burners on medium. Place a drip
tray filled with 1cm water underneath
the pork.
Baste the pork with the melted
butter. Reduce the heat to 180 deg
C and cook the pork for 1½ to 2
hours, or until the skin is crisp and
golden brown and the meat is just
cooked through. Test with a skewer,
the juices should run clear.
Use barbecue mitts to remove
the rotisserie rod. Take the pork
off the rod and place on a large
tray.
Cover with foil and set aside to
rest for 10 minutes.
Cut into slices and serve with
peruvian onion salsa, brazilian
rice, and grilled red capsicum.
Macaroni and cauliflower
cheese
Ingredients
1 cauliflower
1 1/2 cups macaroni
cheese
white sauce
2 drops worcestershire sauce
pinch salt
Sliced tomato to decorate
1 bacon bits, (optional)
Directions
Banch the cauliflower.
Cook the macaroni in salted
water until tender.
Make a simple white sauce and
melt a good amount of cheese into
it. A little worcestershire sauce
helps boost the flavour.
Sit the macaroni and cauliflower
in a baking dish.
Pour over the cheesy sauce and
gently mix through the contents.
You could add grilled bacon
pieces.
Decorate with some tomato
slices, add a little more grated
cheese to the top and bake in a
moderate oven until brown and
bubbling.

Refresh for major ute market challenger
MY WIFE reminded me the
other day of an acquaintance
who wouldn’t drive a car if it had
automatic transmission.
He once told us the reason
why, saying that in an automatic
car you could be driving along
the road and it could suddenly
engage reverse.
Although we laughed at that
statement, he seriously believed
that could happen. As far as
I know that is not technically
possible, and the law of
physics would suggest that it is
improbable.
What I do know is that
most new cars sold in New
Zealand today have automatic
transmissions, that’s fine, it’s what
the market demands. However, I
do have to say it’s very refreshing
to get into a car with a manual
gearbox from time to time. I
guess that’s why I own one.
The latest evaluation car to
come my way with a manual
wasn’t actually a car but a ute,
Isuzu’s new D-Max to be exact.
Isuzu have just launched a
major upgrade to their popular
model, given that it’s been several
years since its last refresh.
The new D-Max has had a fairly
substantial design makeover,
there’s a new double wishbone
suspension up front, the rear
suspension and differential
have had design upgrades, the
engine’s turbocharger system has
been re-engineered, there’s a lot
more kit in the car, especially
for safety where it earns a
five-star Australasian New Car
Assessment Program rating, and
with a bolder exterior the D-Max
is there to tempt the discerning
buyer who wants just something
a little bit out of the mainstream.
Bear in mind, though, that the
D-Max gets all of the engineering
experience of the wider General
Motors group, and it is a ute
that will stand the test of time.
There are also all of the cabin
configurations that you would
expect in an entire range of utes
– cab-chassis, wellside, space and
double cab options. There are 15
variants in total, some just rearwheel-drive,
others four-wheeldrive
and, of course, automatic
gearbox variants are scattered
throughout the line-up.
The evaluation car was an LS
specification double-cab wellside,
it lists at $61,990 ($65,990 auto),
$9500 from the range-topping
X-Terrain model. Incidentally, the
range starts at $49,990.
All variants are fitted with
a 3-litre turbocharged diesel
engine. Isuzu rates it at 140kW
and 450Nm. Power is up 10kW
and 20Nm over the previous
engine and it shows, the torque
flow is increased markedly in
terms of how it is structured
through the mid-range. Boost
from 1600rpm to 2600rpm is

substantial, especially in manual
gearbox form where power is
ushered in decisively as gears are
moved upwards.
Special mention must be made
here of the clutch and six-speed
shift sequence, the two combine
to give smooth changes and little
likelihood off a stall at stakeoff.
Clutch action is light and
progressive, easily hiding the
rugged mechanicals which lie
beneath. Incidentally, the fourwheel-drive
and low ratio system
is initiated by console-mounted
electronic switches.
Although I had the D-Max
during a time of extensive
renovation at the Kiddiehousehold,
I didn’t use the deck
area for anything other than
carrying the cricket bag that I use
for coaching a team of 11-yearolds.
The deck area was naked
paint without a liner, so for fear of
scratching it unnecessarily I had
the weekend off from the project,
hoping that rival brands would
give me the opportunity to soon
clear the section of debris.
On the subject of load, the
D-Max wellside is a genuine
one-tonner, capable of a
1.3-tonne payload depending
on the deck, that along with a
3500kg tow rating has it sitting
commandingly with the market
front-runners.

an easy car to drive smoothly, it

feels good to be in as a driver, it is
civilised and sits comfortably on
the road. The test car was fitted
with 18in Maxxis tyres, they were
deeply-treaded and I thought
they would make their presence
known on the road, however, I
was pleasantly surprised, there is
a little drone on perfectly smooth
surfaces but it wasn’t annoying
and on coarse chip seal there was
sound intrusion.
Isuzu should be well pleased
with the work it did on the
suspension, the ride is as good as
any in this part of the market, incabin
comfort is high both in front
and rear, and other than a little
jiggle over bumps and ruts the
load bearing design doesn’t overly
compromise comfort levels.
Being a working ute, the
elements which make it possible
to traverse difficult terrain are
engineered into the vehicle, the
low ratio/manual gearbox mix
means an absolute crawl mode is
possible in first and second gear.
Prior to picking the ute up it
was used for dealer evaluation
purposes and it had collected
a lot of soil underneath; that
being the case, I pointed the ute
at fairly steep clay bank on the
Port Hills, it easily conquered
the terrain, and with 240mm of
ground clearance there was little
possibility of getting caught going
over the top. On descent, such
is the engine and transmission
braking a feet-off-the-pedals
approach is to be encouraged.
Column space doesn’t allow
comprehensive detailing of the
D-Max but to say it is a worthy
consideration in a busy market,
a market that is dominated
by Thailand-built wellsides.
It’s fair to say the D-Max is a
serious competitor, and with its
enhancements it’s going to stay
that way for many years to come.
With its long-time running
mate the Holden Colorado
having disappeared, now is a
good time for the D-Max to
re-establish itself. After a break
in supply while the newcomer
came on stream, shipments
are plentiful and options are
considerable.
Add in the experience of the
local dealership, and Isuzu will
continue to have a good presence
in Canterbury.
