DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION
The Waldorf School of Garden City strives to be an
environment where diversity is celebrated and all members of our
community are included. We welcome the contributions of
all cultures. We provide opportunities for open dialogue
and discussion with faculty, staff, parents, students, and alumni.
We aim to find common ground.
Through active learning, we seek to explore the many
perceptions and experiences of various ethnicities, races, faiths,
religions, socio-economic groups, genders, and the LGBTQ+
community. We challenge ourselves to uncover our biases
so that we may meet all members of our community with equanimity
and compassion. We are a school that teaches our students
to value the differences in individuals, and we recognize that there are
strength and wisdom in our diversity. We believe a diverse
community is essential to an excellent education, and, to that end,
we recognize the varied perceptions held by our students help to
define the very fabric of our community.

Welcome
Message from
The Faculty Chair
by Kelly O’Halogan
Once when I was
walking along a
paved walkway at
the Oregon coast,
my eye caught the
movement of
bushes to my left.
About 20 feet
ahead of me two black bears, one
chasing the other, crossed my path.
They ran off into the bushes on the
other side of my walkway. I froze,
heart pounding with a mixture of
excitement, awe, and gratitude.
That was followed by a bit
fear...some second-guessing of my
best course of action – uncertainty.
The 2019-20 School year brought
a dose of uncertainty of
unfathomable measure. The
pandemic washed the world with
grief, fear, and uncertainty. Not
only did the institution of our School
have to face it, but each individual
making up our School had their
own inner journey to navigate as
well. Together and separately we
chose our reactions.
The collective and immediate
response from our WSGC
employees was to maintain focus
on educating our students and
serving our families. With awe,
gratitude, and profound respect I
watched our faculty dive into the
unknown to achieve their goals of
staying connected with our students.
They became students themselves of
new technology so they could serve.
Creativity and inventiveness
expanded. I saw the skilled and
synchronized teamwork of the
administrative staff step into action.
Repeatedly individuals stepped out
of their role to take on many and
varied roles. We were all in.
As one of the leaders of the School,
I was not certain of our course.
There was no certainty. But there
was action! There was endurance.
There were failures and successes.
There were adjustments in our
course. We better understood
ourselves and our School. We
learned. We persevered. We are
positioned for a bright future.

Lee Iacocca once said, “So what
do we do? Anything. Something.
So long as we just don’t sit there. If
we screw it up, start over. Try
something else. If we wait until
we’ve satisfied all the uncertainties,
it may be too late.”
In service to the School,

A FOND FAREWELL...
Throughout the 2019-20 school year, Helene
Smith played an integral part in guiding the
School through some difficult and turbulent
events. During this time, her dedication to the
School and the families of The Waldorf School
of Garden City never wavered. Nevertheless, Helene has
decided to step down from her role as School Administrator
prior to the start of the 20-21 school year and leave New
York to be closer to her family. We are sincerely thankful for
her leadership over the last year and wish her the best of
luck in her future endeavors.
Alumna/Waldorf lifer, Alumni parent, and
faculty member, Bobby Lyons ‘76 has not
only graced our halls but also dedicated her
life to The Waldorf School of Garden City for
decades. Her positive and humble demeanor
has been an inspiration to students and colleagues alike.
She has decided to retire to spend more time with her
grandchildren. We wish her a happy retirement and hope to
keep seeing her on the court during annual alumni
basketball games alongside her alumni daughters!
Grades teacher Tasha England has decided
to return home to Oklahoma to be closer to
her family. Tasha joined the School in 2016.
She was a conscientious and devoted teacher
and a respected colleague who also served on
the Board of Trustees as a faculty member. We are thankful
for her dedicated service and wish her the best of luck
wherever life takes her.
Joining The Waldorf School of Garden City in
2015, Ellen Cimino took 3 classes through
their middle school years. Her passion for
history and protecting the environment inspired
her students, some of whom went on to
promote awareness outside of school. Ellen was a congenial
colleague, and she will be missed. We wish her the best as
she moves on to a new chapter.
Eurythmy Teacher Maria Ver Eecke has left
her full-time position to spend more time with
her family. We are happy that she will
continue to assist the school with student/
therapeutic assessments periodically.
After 19 years as the French teacher for
students in the Early Childhood through grade
8, Florence Kadri decided to return home to
France with her two children. A beloved
teacher and colleague, Florence brought
creativity, fun, and joy to her subject and additionally
offered an afterschool French language elective, tutored
math, and was an integral part of the middle school comingof-age
trips. Florence will be sorely missed. We wish her
the very best in her future endeavors. Merci et bonne
chance, Florence!
We would also like to acknowledge the great contributions
of the following members of our faculty and staff who
did not return this fall. A sincere thank you to Gardening
Teacher Jeannine Davis, ENL Instructor Nina Renker,
Receptionist Gina McCullough, and Development
Associate Jodie Thomas. Your dedication and
commitment to our School have shown in your work
throughout the years, and we wish you all the best in your
future endeavors.

Commencement 2020
Perseverance and Resilience at
61st Commencement
“As a
community
with the right
intentions,
a clear
voice, and
perspective,
we will be
the catalysts
for a change
that we
deserve.”
~
Christina Reed
Class of 2020
The 61st senior class to
graduate from The Waldorf
School on Garden City did
so under highly unusual
circumstances. Nevertheless, with
a pandemic
keeping us apart,
the School,
students, and
families rose to the
occassion to
commemorate this
important occasion
via live-stream with
pomp and
circumstance.
While the students
were not able to
physically take the stage, they
were able to process in virtually.
As per tradition, High School
Chair Roland Rothenbucher
welcomed the 22 graduates and
their families. He described the
class as “known to be
contemplative, reserved,
respectful, and kind-hearted. They
have been a pleasure to
teach...but underneath lives an
exuberant energy.”
The senior class advisors, Shane
Flanagan and Libia Gallo
addressed the class with a joint
speech to express their “love and
admiration” for the students. They
used the metaphor of nature to
discuss the unique “elements”
each student brought to the class
as well as the “forest” they need
to explore and navigate in order
to find their way out into the
world. They concluded by telling
them, “...thank you all for
opening yourselves to us and
showing us who you truly are.
Whether you have brought the
life giving air, the breeze that
kept us moving, an inspiring gust
of wind, passionate fire, the
affirming earth, or the ever
changing watery element, we
want you to know we see you
and we love you.”
Senior Sean Chen, who joined
the class in 8th grade,
addressed the class live from his
home in China. He shared his
story of coming to WSGC
because “The Waldorf School,
fosters a tight-knit community
while challenging students to
discover their own potential.” He
added, “Because of
the pandemic, we
have learned how to
alter ourselves and
adapt to new
challenges. I deeply
believe that today's
obstacles are great
opportunities for us,
for our generation, to
add value to the
world...I wish you all
very good lives.”
Graduate and WSGC lifer,
Aimee Gallager reminded her
class and her generation to look
inward, to look at all humanity,
and to see “the bountiful
intersection between the two.”
Referencing Emerson’s the
American Scholar speech, she
challenged each student to
“create a new reality that is
wholly our own, both
individually and throughout our
communities.” She ended by
explaining that “At the end of
the day we are distinguished by
our kindness, and I hope that
each of us continues to cultivate
that virtue above any other.”
6
Student Body Co-President and
entrepreneur Christina Reed initially
felt she had no new words of wisdom
to share with her class, but after the
tumultuous events that engulfed the
year, she knew what needed to be
said. The one word she used to define
the class is “resilient” and the feeling of
community only grew as they were not
able to be together physically. The
creativity that has come out of necessity
was impressive. In 8th grade she
adorned her Main Lesson book with a
quote by Huey Newton that stuck with
her, “The revolution has been in the
hands of the young. The young always
inherit the revolution.” She added, “As
we enter the next phase of our lives,
we must continue connecting with
others, forming relationships, and
improving our broken society. As a
community with the right intentions, a
clear voice, and perspective, we will
be the catalysts for a change that
we deserve.”
Commencement Speaker Claudia
Hart, the class’s Lower School Class
teacher, used the following words to
describe the class: Truth, courage,
thoughtfulness, kindess. She explained
that the class’s “artistic and intellectual
capacities resonated in the hearts of
their teachers” and told them
emphatically “you are powerful and
what you do matters.” “You have
chosen to act and that action will soon
translate into choices as you move
toward adulthood....May your power,
love, courage, and hope spur you
onwards..welcome to the world class
of 2020!”
The speeches were followed by a
musical presentation by Ethan Krahn
who remastered the song “The
Road to Nowhere” by the
Talking Heads. Focusing on the
concepts of “moving forward,
positivity, and good vibrations,”
and lyrics like, “give us time to
work it out” and “it’s alright, it’s
alright,” Ethan left the audience
with hope and postive energy as
the ceremony came to an end.
Roland Rothenbucher closed the
ceremony by stating, “At Waldorf,
pivoting and adapting to change has
gone into your DNA...You have had
many experiences that have grown in
you the capacity to embrace change
and to navigate your way through
uncertainty...If anyone can meet the
ever-changing
world with a sense
of responsive and
responsible action,
you can, because
you can rely on
yourselves.
Go with our best
wishes and highest
hopes!”
The Commencement Ceremony
was followed by a drive-through
the “U” diploma pick-up. On a
beautiful June day, graduates and
their families drove through the
School for the last time amidst
cheers from faculty and staff to
pick up their diplomas and a bag
of gifts from the School.
Congratulations Class of 2020!

Class of 2020 Profiles
The Class of 2020: Bright,
Creative, Resourceful, and Kind
By Marisa Gelb, College Advisor and Guidance Counselor
The Class of 2020 has done an extraordinary job representing our School. These student leaders were role models to
their peers and a source of pride for our faculty and staff. During the COVID19 pandemic, they truly showed their
mettle, succeeding under the most difficult of circumstances. As they begin their college journeys, we know that they
will carry the values of our community with them. The Class of 2020 will be greatly missed, but we are so proud to
have them as alumni and we cannot wait to see where the future takes them!
Nothing short
of a force of
nature,
Christina
Altidor
joined the Waldorf
community in 9th grade.
Her bold personality and
great sense of humor made
her stand out from the
crowd. She is honest to a
fault, sharp as a tack, and
motivated from a place
deep within herself. In
school, Christina is
committed to the Diversity
Committee, but outside of
school, Christina gives most
of her free time to her
church. She is a Sunday
service programmer where
she prepares songs,
announcements, and
activities for the church, a
bible camp counselor, and
a church choir member. She
also babysits and tutors
young children from her
church community. Christina
will be attending
Binghamton University,
where she plans to study
Neuroscience, and
eventually pursue medicine.
Intelligent,
clever,
charismatic,
and creative
are just a few
words that describe
Yuxiong “Marco” Bai.
While Marco is an excellent
student, he is exceptional
outside of the classroom. An
essential part of the Waldorf
community, Marco was our
Student Body Co-President
and was also a key member
of both the Social and
Diversity Committees. When
he is not representing the
interests of our students, he
can be found playing
Varsity Basketball. Outside
of school, Marco has
pursued his interest in
business and fashion
through the China Thinks Big
Competition, the Blue Ocean
Competition, and a Fashion
Institute of Technology Men’s
Design course. With his
passion for fashion, Marco
will be heading to the
School of the Art Institute of
Chicago to study fashion
design.
Karen Bravo
is bright,
poised, kind,
and generous
of spirit. She
is a source of incredibly
positive energy and has a
“can-do” attitude that makes
her a beloved member of the
class of 2020. Karen moved
to New York from Colombia
when she was in middle
school. She barely spoke
English. Since then, through
hard work, listening, and
fearless trial and error, Karen
has become one of our
school’s most accomplished
students. Karen was a
member of the Soccer,
Softball, and Cross-Country
Teams for several years. She
was also a multi-year
member of the Eco-Orchestra.
When Karen was not
competing or performing, she
was working with young
children in our School’s
Aftercare Program caring for
early childhood students. Our
Early Childhood staff was
consistently impressed with
her patience and kindness.
Karen will pursue her dream
of a career in architecture at
Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute.
Jiacheng
“Sean” Chen
is respectful
and kind with
a deep
concern for the well-being of
others. While Sean is an
amazing academic presence
in the classroom, he also
brings much more to both our
Waldorf and his local
community. Sean is a fouryear
member of the Varsity
Basketball team, a
representative of our School at
the Human Rights Conference
at Adelphi University, and
President of the class of
2020. In addition, he
volunteered as a teacher’s
assistant at the Oyster Bay
High School’s Tzu Chi
Academy and at Fuo Guang
Mountain (a Buddhist
organization in NYC). He
also helped coordinate events
for the Long Island Chinese
American Association. Sean
has a passion for
photography and works as a
8
Class of 2020 Profiles
food photographer for Food
Map NYC, taking
photographs of restaurants
that he has visited. His work
has been seen by thousands!
Sean will bring his unique mix
of talents to Colgate University
in Hamilton, New York.
Smart and
incredibly
knowledgeable
on a wide
variety of
topics, Owen
Chernoff brings something
special to the Waldorf
community. In the classroom,
Owen is known for being a
passionate debater with bold
and unique opinions. Outside
the classroom, Owen works
on his vintage RX-7 every day
(trying to restore it to its full
80’s glory). He loves
barbecuing and grilling (he
even made this the focus of
his senior speech). Owen runs
a small computer support
business, and donated the
majority of his profits to an
inner-city robotics team in
Rochester, NY. In the
summers, Owen utilizes his
love of technology and
electronics for his job as an
alarm and security network
specialist. With plans to study
engineering, Owen will head
to Worcester Polytechnic
Institute in Massachusetts
come fall.
Sumaya
Cilenti is an
intelligent,
hardworking,
and genuine
young woman. She is often
reserved, but when she puts
herself out there, her light
shines very brightly. Sumaya
is often able to see and solve
problems by thinking outside
the box. Coming to our
School from a rural Waldorf
school in Vermont, Sumaya
has thrived in our community.
If Sumaya is not in the
classroom, you will most likely
find her dancing! She is a
proud member of the Mark
Morris Student Dance
Company and also a
teaching assistant at Dionne
Kamara Dance. Sumaya has
even spent a summer in the
Alvin Ailey Experience
Workshop. With plans to
pursue a gap year, Sumaya
will be attending Goucher
College in Towson, Maryland
in the fall of 2021.
Generous,
kind, smart,
and talented,
Samantha
Cumberbatch
thrives when she is
contributing to her various
communities. Closest to her
heart is the New York
National Guard Teen Council.
Sam comes from a military
family, and her involvement in
the Council has allowed her
to both offer support and
receive support from other
military children and their
families. She is also very
devoted to her church. At
Waldorf, Sam loved the
performing arts. She was in
the High School Musical all
four years, and was a proud
member of our School’s
acapella group, Fermata the
Blue. Sam is also a huge
advocate for the LGBTQ
community and she is a
member of our School’s
Gay/Straight Alliance. Sam
will head to the University of
New Haven to pursue a
degree in Cybersecurity.
Aimee
Gallagher
has an
incredible
aptitude for
active listening and the
natural ability to make
meaningful connections.
Aimee is passionate about
learning with a particular
talent for writing and
literature. She participated in
the Washington Journalism
and Media Conference at
George Mason University in
2018 and was selected for
the Young Writers Retreat
with Alice Hoffman—of
Practical Magic fame—at
Adelphi University her junior
year. Anyone who knows
Aimee also knows that she
has devoted much of her life
to dancing. In addition to
long hours at numerous local
studios, Aimee has been a
part of several competitive
dance summer intensives
including the Joffrey Ballet
School and American Ballet
Theater. Aimee has also
served as both dance captain
and actor in several of our
WSGC musicals. With a plan
to continue pursuing writing
and dance, Aimee will attend
Bard College.
Gabrielle
Joseph has a
big personality,
a clever mind,
and a beautiful
aesthetic. She is a person
who has a true sense of style.
From her unique makeup to
her cool (and often
homemade) clothes, she
knows how to make her
outward appearance match
her inner creativity. She has a
beautiful artistic style that is all
her own. Gabby was selected
for foundation classes in the
“For the Love of Art” program
at Adelphi University. She
also works with the Ace
Mentor Program, learning
with working architects.
Gabby is an accomplished
dancer who has studied with
both the American Ballet
Theater and the Dance
Theatre of Harlem. She was
the captain of the Varsity
Cross Country Team, a
member of the Social
Committee, and Class
Secretary at Waldorf. Gabby
has also worked as a
lifeguard and swim instructor
at Saf-T-Swim for several
years. Gabby will be heading
to Brooklyn to pursue a
degree in architecture at
Pratt Institute.
Valedictorian
Daniella Kata
grew up at The
Waldorf
School of
Garden City, and during her
time here she has proven to
be an exceptional student, an
excellent role model, and a
9
Class of 2020 Profiles
caring, kind, and loving
human being. She is brilliant,
yet humble and diligent. In
addition to her academic
prowess, Daniella has her
hands in all kinds of school
activities. She is a member of
the New York State Science
Honors Society, a member of
our School’s Diversity
Committee, a multiple first
place winner in Sprachfest,
an active English and
German tutor, and a Student
Council Representative.
Daniella loves all of her
activities, but music is
definitely a defining part of
who she is. Daniella plays
four musical instruments at the
expert level: piano, violin,
ukulele, and erhu (Chinese
violin). She is a four-year
member of the Tri-M Music
Honor Society. Outside of
school, Daniella performs and
competes whenever possible,
in anything from church
events to major competitions.
She even won first place at
the New York Concert Festival
International Competition at
Lincoln Center. With plans for
a future in creating
environmentally friendly
housing, Daniella will join the
civil engineering department
at the University at Buffalo in
their Honors College.
Ethan Krahn
eats, sleeps
and breathes
creativity. He
is a fantastic
musician with a particular
talent for parody (his hilarious
original song about Hamlet
brought the house down).
Ethan is passionate about
film, with plans to turn this
into a career. He is a born
storyteller with an incredible
imagination and a sense of
comedic timing that is rare in
a person so young. Ethan
loves all things creative, and
this was reflected in
everything he did at school.
He was a key member of
both the jazz and garage
bands, playing an impressive
four instruments (piano,
drums, bass, and
vibraphone). Ethan also
starred in several of our high
school musicals and was the
President of the Tri-M Music
Honor Society. Ethan writes
and records music at home
and when not playing music,
he is focusing on film. He has
worked on several short films
and strives to learn more
about camera work and
editing. Ethan will be bringing
his talent and charisma to
Boston to study film at
Emerson College.
Dev
Krishnasastry
may seem
quiet and
reserved, but
put an
instrument in his hands, and
he is anything but! With plans
to pursue a career in music
composition, Dev participated
in many of the School’s music
offerings. He was a four-year
performer in the Jazz Band,
studied Music Theory as an
elective, and played in the pit
band for every school
performance of his high
school career. During the
summer, Dev studied classical
and jazz guitar at the
USDAN Center for the Arts.
Additionally, he takes private
guitar lessons with jazz
guitarist Kevin B. Clark. While
Dev loves learning about
music and listening to great
musicians from around the

makes an
impact on
everyone he
meets. When
he speaks, it is always to say
something intelligent, kind, or
impactful. Michael plans to
pursue a future in data
science and potentially use
these skills towards a career
in the business world. Every
year of high school, he
aggressively pursued this
goal. The summer after his

What Lucinda
Peal lacks in
stature, she
makes up for
in personality,
strength,
intelligence, and spunk.
Lucinda is an incredibly
diligent student, but outside of
the classroom, she is a
creative and athletic force of
nature! She was a four-year
member of the HS chorus and
acapella group, Fermata the
Blue (taking on a leadership
role as a senior). Lucinda also
performed in last year’s
school musical, The Drowsy
Chaperone. In addition,
Lucinda is a three-season
athlete! She is a proud
member of the varsity soccer,
10

softball, and basketball teams
and was chosen as a
basketball captain. When
Lucinda is not performing or
competing, she is helping our
School. Lucinda has been a
volunteer in our library for the
last two years, and she served
on the Prom Committee.
Lucinda will be attending
Binghamton University with
plans to study biology.
“Be honest

friendly and
helpful,
considerate
and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and
do, and to respect myself and
others, respect authority, use
resources wisely, make the
world a better place.” This is
part of the Girl Scout Law, but
it is also the way that
Christina Reed (a life-long
Girl Scout) lives her life each
day. Christina is a superstar,
both in and outside the
classroom. She was a Student
Body Co-President and served
on the Student Council for
several years. She was a
member and secretary of our
School’s chapter of the Tri-M
Music Honor Society and a
first chair trumpet player in the
Jazz Band. She was also a
member of Model UN and the
Diversity Committee and was
a Varsity Cross-Country runner
throughout high school.
Outside of school, Christina
devoted hundreds of hours to
community service. She
volunteered in a local medical
facility and at the Levittown
Public Library. During the
COVID-19 Pandemic,
Christina gave countless hours
to creating personal protective
equipment from home on a
3D printer. Christina will be
bringing her many talents to
Stony Brook University with
plans to study biology.

bright, bold,
and larger
than life. Her
enthusiasm for our school, her
interests, and particularly for
her athletic teams knows no
bounds. She is a beacon of
positivity that draws others to
her, and she is simply a joy to
be around. Mollie is a threeseason
athlete who has
competed on the Varsity
Soccer, Basketball, and
Softball teams since her
freshman year. She was the
captain of all three teams,
was elected MVP for all three
teams, and was selected as
All-Conference MVP for
Soccer and Basketball.
Anyone who has heard
Mollie’s senior speech knows
that outside of school, Mollie
is a much beloved counselor
at the Long Beach Recreation
Camp. She was even voted
counselor of the year! Mollie
will be heading to our
nation’s capital to study
criminal justice at The George
Washington University.
Mia Ver

parts
intelligence,
kindness,
talent, and drive. She
received the Triple “C”
Award from NYS Attorney
General Letitia James for
courage, character, and
commitment, and nothing
could be more fitting. While
she has many incredible
talents, Mia is most
passionate about singing and
is a chorister at the Church of
the Incarnation in Garden
City where her beautiful,
clear voice lifts the spirit.
When Mia was not excelling
in the classroom or singing,
she generously gave her time,
often through her church, at
major church events, as a
Sunday School teacher’s
assistant, and as a counselor
in the choir’s summer
academy. She was also a
youth leader, and a delegate
to the Long Island Convention
of the Episcopal Diocese.
Additionally, she volunteered
for Habitat for Humanity and
the Interfaith Nutrition
Network. Mia was a member
of WSGC’s Diversity
Committee and Community
Service Club, and marched
with her church group in
Washington DC during the
March for Our Lives rally,
and also stood proudly with
Greta Thunberg at the NYC
Climate Strike. Mia will be
heading to Hartford,
Connecticut to study biology
at Trinity College.
Bobby
Vernola feels
no pressure to
conform to
others’
expectations of what is cool
or interesting, and in turn,
people often find Bobby to be
cool and interesting. Bobby is
bright, socially aware, and
deeply artistic. When he is
not in class, Bobby is likely to
be found creating art. He is
passionate about embroidery,
sewing, and textiles, and has
created his own space in his
home to work on these
projects. In the fall of his
junior year, Bobby attended a
fine arts portfolio class at
Molloy College. He was then
nominated and selected for
the Adelphi University “For
The Love of Art” program,
where he worked on
foundation skills like figure
drawing. His favorite artistic
pursuit to date is when he
received a special scholarship
and spent a summer in
County Wexford, Ireland
studying art on a farm. Bobby
will bring his unique brand of
charm and talent to NYC to
study textile and surface
design at The Fashion Institute
of Technology.

like. He is sweet without
being a pushover, brilliant
without being inaccessible,
and cultured without being
pretentious. He has a maturity
and a sense of responsibility
that are well beyond his
years. Outside of his brilliant
work in the classroom, Jake
is focused on photography.
In addition to his
independent photography
work, he took photos for the
yearbook, was a member of
the photography club, and
competed in photography
competitions. In fact, Jake
loves taking photos so much
that he used his senior
speech to discuss how much
he values photography and
how it has fueled him to
become more independent
and travel more frequently. In
addition to his love of
photography, Jake is an
active outdoorsman,
regularly going hiking,
camping, and even
gardening. He is also a
trumpet player and music
lover. Soon, Jake will be
heading to NYC to attend
the prestigious Macaulay
Honors College at Baruch
College, where he plans to
study business.
Joining The
Waldorf
School of
Garden City
at the
beginning of
her junior year, Aixin
“Cheryl” Xu really found
her stride. WSGC turned out
to be a perfect match for a
creative intellectual like
Cheryl. She quickly became
known for her determination,
intelligence, and her ability
to doggedly pursue her
goals. At our School, Cheryl
has been able to showcase
her rather remarkable artistic
talents. In the amazing words
of our own Ms. Cavallaro,
“Cheryl is one of the most
talented high school students
I have come across in my
nearly 20 years of teaching.
Her skill level approaches
that of a longstanding
working professional in the
field. She is incredibly
naturally gifted across art
media, but her intense
dedication and work ethic
propel her natural gifts into
the stratosphere.” Next year,
Cheryl will be heading to
Pasadena, California to
pursue a degree in product
design at the ArtCenter
College of Design.
Salutatorian
Hao
“Edward”
Zhang is
whip smart,
incredibly
driven, uniquely talented,
and super funny to boot! He
is driven to succeed, but also
very relaxed and easy to
relate to. Edward is
passionate about math and
talks often about his future in
data science, but he is also
passionate about music, and
it is clear that he will never
stop pursuing this part of
himself as well. At WSGC,
Edward is the president of
the senior class, a member of
the Social Committee, the
founder of the Class Band, a
member of the Diversity
Committee, a member of the
garage band, and a former
varsity athlete (soccer).
Outside of school, Edward’s
pursuits are equally
impressive. One of Edward’s
proudest moments to date is
the creation of his non-profit
DJ school, Summer Spin.
Edward is an accomplished
DJ—spinning regularly at
school events—who wanted
to teach others as well.
When he set out to create
the school, he knew that he
wanted to use the profits to
support music charities. His
business is now up and
running in both China and
the U.S. Edward’s passion
for music also applies to the
guitar and singing. He does
street performances when he
is back home in China.
Edward has headed to NYC
where he will study data
science and business at NYU
Stern School of Business.
On top of her
academic
excellence
and
determination,
Zixuan “Cathy” Zhu is one
of the kindest, most gentle
young women that you will
ever meet. She is always
conscientious when she
speaks and listens to the
feelings of others. Cathy is
known by her peers as a
supportive person, and she
was often the one comforting
another student when they
were struggling. When Cathy
was not in the classroom, she
was finding ways to help
support our School. Cathy
acted as both Treasurer and
Secretary for the class of
2020 and is an active
member of the Student
Council. In previous years,
Cathy was also a member of
the Orchestra and a Varsity
Cross Country runner.
Outside of school, Cathy
participated in a research
program with other
international students called
China Think Big, in which
students were researching the
impact of network buzzwords
on teenagers. Cathy also has
a passion for baking and
shares this passion with the
world through her food blog
and Instagram page. She
bakes traditional breads and
pastries as well as glutenfree,
vegan, and allergen
free items. Cathy will be
joining our neighbors to the
north to study at the
University of Toronto. W

MLK Service Day
MLK Day of Service 2020
Building Love and Camaraderie
On Thursday, January 16th, the students and faculty of The
Waldorf School of Garden City came together to honor the
life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The entire student
body took part in various service
projects, both on and off the Garden
City campus, that promoted the spirit
of love and camaraderie.
The Ninth Grade traveled to Island
Assisted Living in Hempstead, where
the students played games and music
with the residents to put them in high
spirits. The Eleventh and Twelfth
Grades spent their day working with
students at John Lewis Childs Elementary School in Floral
Park. The students volunteered with Junior Achievement’s
High School Heroes Program.
Meanwhile, on the Waldorf School campus, the Fifth through
Eighth Grades prepared sandwiches and cookies for guests of
the INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) in Hempstead, N.Y.
Each sandwich and cookie was specially wrapped and
placed in a unique paper bag decorated by the First – Third
Grades. Altogether the students
prepared over 500 sandwiches for
those in need. In addition to the
sandwiches and cookies, the School is
also sending the INN $300 raised
during our 2020 Alumni Basketball
Games and Community Three-Point
Contest.
The day culminated in a special
assembly where grades four through
eight paid tribute to Dr. King and other civil rights activists
through artistic presentations. Parents were invited to see the
hard work of the students on display to honor Dr. King
Thank you to all our students for their efforts in making this
special service day a success. W

A Tribute to George Rose
The Waldorf School of Garden City
Remembers George V. Rose
by Roland Rothenbucher, High School Chair
When I first came to the
School around 1980,
George Rose had the
School humming with music.
All the students sang their
hearts out for him. In high
school assemblies, Mr. Rose
insisted on good posture, wryly
telling students that they looked
like “puddles of skin” if they
were not upright in their seats.
His students sang a wideranging
repertoire of world
music including American
spirituals, madrigals, sailor
shanties, and works by
Brahms, Faure, Hassler,
Palestrina, and Tschesnokoff.
Every second year, Mr. Rose
produced, directed and
conducted a Gilbert and
Sullivan Operetta with students
in grades 7-12—a highlight of
the year and a defining
moment for generations of
Waldorf students! He
conducted students and
community members in
performances of Benjamin
Britten’s Noah’s Fludde and
Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy at the
School’s 35th and 50th anniversaries.
Year-in and year-out, he led the entire
school community in song from
Swinging Along on Opening Day to
Jacob’s Ladder at the Promotion
Assembly. Recognized widely for his
professionalism, charm and charisma,
Mr. Rose was oftentimes invited to
1930 - 2019
conduct hundreds of Waldorf teachers
at annual National Summer
Conferences.
In his various roles as Choral
Director, Orchestral Conductor, Music
Department Chair, High School Chair,
Faculty Chair, and Member of the
Board of Trustees at NYSAIS and
AWSNA, George Rose is one of our
School’s great first-generation
teachers who created
traditions that we still follow
today—including the feel and
flow of the Carol Sing and
our 8th and 12th Grade
Graduation Exercises.
Mr. Rose believed in a
robust performance
curriculum for middle and
high school students; he
believed that it was important
for young people to be
working toward a
performance where their hours
of practice were seen and
acknowledged by the school
community. Because of his
enduring influence, countless
students he led in musical
performances have a song in
their heart today. Fortunate
are all who came into the
sphere of this inspiring leader
and gifted musician.
Unfortunately, a planned tribute to
George Rose was postponed due to
the pandemic. W

David White Remembers
Camp Glen Brook
David White was a camper in the earliest years of Camp Glen Brook, and has been a
steadfast supporter of Glen Brook from the camp’s inception in 1946. With such a
longstanding relationship, we asked David to share a history of Glen Brook, and how
Glen Brook and The Waldorf School of Garden City became one entity.
Iwas at Camp Glen Brook as the only day
camper starting at the age of six from 1949 to
1956. Then I returned for the summers of 1959,
‘60 and ‘61 as a staff member. I’ve felt a part of
the community ever since. Glen Brook has a very
special place in my heart, as does The Waldorf
School of Garden City, which Glen Brook joined in
the early ‘70s.
William Harrer bought the camp property in 1946.
At the time, my family’s summer home, what is now
called White Meadows, was across the road. The
previous winter, some of our neighbors drove down
with some bad news: a man from New York was
going to purchase the former Beedle Estate and
create a summer camp. My dad said, “Well, let’s
give it a chance.”
So when we moved up for the summer, my dad
went over and got acquainted with Mr. Harrer. We
all loved William Harrer. He had such a wonderful,
mild way of speaking and was just someone you
naturally revered. He taught at the Rudolf Steiner
School in Manhattan, and at the end of the school
day on a Friday, he would come up on the train,
take the bus over, and start doing work to restore
the campus, drain the water out of the basement,
and get it ready for the first summer.
That first summer, in 1946, there were only twelve
campers and two counselors. Mr. Harrer himself,
and a Miss Ann Friedl, who taught at High Mowing
School at the time. There was also Mrs. Wetzl, who
was the cook and the nurse that summer, and who
later became the nurse at The Waldorf School of
Garden City. The second season of camp, Dorothy
Jeffrey was one of the counselors. At the end of the
season, Dorothy and William got married, and so
they were Mr. and Mrs. Harrer. The first dining
hall was not built until 1949, so the campers ate in
the front room that is now the parlor, and Mr. and
Mrs. Harrer had their living quarters in what is now
the library.
In the summer of 1948, Peter Curran and his first
wife, Betty, were looking for summer jobs. They
found that Mr. Harrer had advertised for some
camp staff. They came over and talked with him,
and Peter was promptly chosen to be head of the
waterfront, and Betty became the handcrafts
teacher. At that time, Peter was teaching in New
Hampshire, and they kept coming back to work at
Glen Brook summer after summer.
Because of William Harrer’s connections in New
York, Peter Curran was able to get connected with
people at The Waldorf School of Garden City,
and he and Betty decided to move down to Long
Island in 1957. Peter became the head of the
history department and also the head of the
guidance and athletic departments. In time, he
became head of the high school and served one
19
year (1978-79) as the interim
faculty chair. He was a man
of many hats. Betty was the
handcrafts teacher for a
while, and afterwards she
became the editor for the
school news. She did that for
quite a few years.
Mr. and Mrs. Harrer retired
from the Rudolf Steiner School
in 1971 and moved up yearround
to the camp. They and the Currans
and the Kretzes (who had been teachers
at the Rudolf Steiner School in New York)
had the idea of trying to make Glen
Brook a year-round program. The first
classes from The Waldorf School of
Garden City came up in 1971. That was
just for the fall and the spring. Before
that, the seniors would come up from
Garden City and spend Memorial
Day weekend at the camp as
their final class outing. They really
didn’t have a winter group until a
few years later, when the seniors
would come for the week after
Christmas.
In 1973, Peter Curran took over
running the camp. Peter had the
competence, with his
administrative background from
his work in Garden City, and Mr.
Harrer trusted him. After Mr. Harrer
offered ownership of the camp to Peter
Curran, Peter talked to the school
treasurer, who recommended that it be
deeded with The Waldorf School of
Garden City so that it could be
incorporated as a camp. Between 1973
and 1976 the entire property on the
north side of the road was acquired by
The Waldorf School of Garden City.
It was really a gradual acquisition of the
property for the School. The land across
the road, where the Harrer house is, was
kept in the name of Mr. Harrer until he
died in 1978, and then it went to Peter
Curran. In 1987, Peter and Betty moved to
the staff house and the Harrer House went
to The Waldorf School. Then the staff
house went to The Waldorf School when
Peter Curran left Glen Brook. My father
and I gave White Meadows to the camp
in 1999. We knew that we couldn’t live
there forever, and I kept thinking how it
might work out with Glen Brook.
Glen Brook has a lot of fond memories for
me. The beautiful setting where you can
look at Monadnock, at the camp buildings,
and then go down and walk around the
lake and the Glen Brook itself.
When I was a camper and staff member,
we had the tradition to do Tuesday or
Wednesday hikes. We made two trips to
Mount Monadnock during the summer,
and this was, of course, when the summer
camp was 8-weeks long. The first trip
would be up by the Halfway House Trail,
where you could literally drive halfway up
the mountain. We walked up, and then
Mr. Harrer came up with a truck and the
bug juice and so forth, then we climbed
the rest of the way up to the summit. The
other trail we used was the Marlborough
Trail. That was supposedly the easiest of
all the trails. When it was time to come
down, Mrs. Harrer would pick up a mirror
and heliograph a message from camp.
We’d watch for her flashes, and that was
our cue to start down the mountain. We
also went to Pitcher Mountain, or
Blueberry Mountain, and came back with
bucketfuls of blueberries, and we’d have
blueberry pancakes the next day and a
blueberry pie for dessert after dinner.
20
At that time, the animal population was a
little bit simpler than it is now. I
superintended the care of the animals
during the three years I worked there with
Mrs. Harrer as a teenager from 1959-
1961. There were two lambs, a mother
rabbit who often had babies during the
middle of the camp season, three chickens,
three ducks, and Jerry
the Pony. One summer
~
the mother duck laid
eggs and we actually
watched them hatch out,
so we had baby
ducklings the last week
of camp in 1960. The
birth of the baby bunnies
was wondrous as we
noticed how the mother
bunny would take pieces
of fur and make her own
nest with it.
“Mrs. Harrer
would pick up a
mirror and
heliograph a
message from
camp. We’d
watch for her
flashes, and that
was our cue to
start down the
mountain.”
It is hard to put into
words what keeps me so
connected to this place. I
think nostalgia is a part
of it. But more
importantly, I want the
~
next generation beyond
mine, and even beyond that, to have an
experience similar to what I and other
campers had, but appropriate for their
time period. I hope they can learn to live
in harmony with each other, learn how to
do simple creations like shop projects,
learn that the apple sauce does not come
from a Mott’s apple sauce bottle, but
comes from an apple tree, and have the
experience of taking care of animals. Glen
Brook has a wonderful eternal quality that
has persisted through the different
leaderships over the years. It provides a
way for each young person, staff as well
as children, to find the true self that lives
within. The piece by John
Gardner that is posted in the
living room speaks on that:
Glen Brook should be a
place of archetypal
experiences, giving each a
truer glimpse of what he is
living for. There
must be a quietness
where the student
comes to a
realization of
himself and where he
can find intuitions of his
destiny. We need to
learn—all of us—to
work not too intensively,
not too slackly: to find
satisfaction in the work
itself, in what we put
into it rather than what
we take out of it. After
the right amount of the
right kind of work,
everything seems
marvelous—the grass
is green, the sky is
blue, the food is
delicious, and
companionship springs up with
people who have worked
together… Companionship and
brotherhood must be the
prototype for all economic life
in the future, as opposed to the
self-seeking now prevalent. The
tone of the work at Glen Brook
should increasingly give children
a sense of how this brotherhood
may be achieved. —John

Camp Glen Brook Report
Message from
Camp Glen Brook
by Mark Stehlik, Executive Director
Though the world
and Glen Brook
have seen much
change this past
year, I am heartened
by the enduring
importance of what
Glen Brook offers.
As I speak with alumni from past
decades, I am consistently reminded
that the heart of the Glen Brook
experience has been unchanged for
75 years. At the same time, what we
offer becomes scarcer and more
important with every passing year.
As we’ve resumed in-person
programming this fall, the joy that
students and gappers have felt at
being, working, exploring, and
playing together has been as deep
and fruitful as ever— probably even
more so given the long periods of
isolation so many have endured. We
have had to adapt to keep everybody
safe. Though the students have been
required to wear masks while near
each other, they have had the freedom
to connect with each other and nature
in our spacious 240-acre campus of
the farm and forest. Our gap program
attendees (“gappers”) followed
extensive safety protocol and have
now entered into their own domestic
family unit where they can interact
freely. We have been so pleased with
the ability to resume safe
programming after suspending our
Summer Camp and are confident we
will run summer camp in 2021!
I believe Glen Brook exposes our
students and campers to a truly lifechanging
way of participating in our
society today. It’s easy to look around
at our world and feel alarmed:
soaring inequity and racial injustice,
climate change, a global pandemic.
These are big issues. Glen Brook
offers an important part of the solution:
an experience of how simple and
wonderful life can be. Participants
learn to live in a harmonious
community with others; learn skills of
self-sufficiency on the farm, in the
kitchen, and through craft; song and
play together; explore and engage
with the natural world. These things
have been central to Glen Brook since
the beginning. In a world that is
increasingly saturated with technology
and consumption, the yearning people
have for these activities has only
grown. I am delighted every time we
welcome somebody here and see
them flourish and grow in this idyllic
setting, and I look forward to the next
time you can join us. W

Glen Brook School Programs
by Jake Lewis, School Program Director
When big things change, it starts
to feel like everything changes.
The events in the world and their
impacts have reached even our small
hilltop as we resume in-person school
programs. We’ve had to adjust some
of our itineraries to fit new travel
restrictions and realities. We’ve
implemented a series of protocols to
confidently
manage the
risks of this
moment, and
these changes
in turn change
some of the
reliable
rhythms of a
Glen Brook
trip. No doubt
about it, some things are different.
But there are things that haven’t
changed, and these are just as
important to recognize as the things
that have. The recent 12th grade trip
from the Waldorf School of Garden
City contains a short story to this
effect. The seniors were excited to
return to Glen Brook after nearly two
years away, eager to connect to each
other—and to the land—face to face.
But they were also aware of the
uncertainty present in our world. With
that in mind a few students asked,
“There probably isn’t time for this, but
it would be so great to do a sunrise
hike of Monadnock this week…you
know, in case this is our last trip.”
We were only too happy to oblige,
and after a strenuous nocturnal hike
we were graced with a beautiful
sunrise in a cloud-streaked sky.
I thought then, at the chilly mountain
summit under the red rising sun, of all
that lies at the heart of the Glen Brook
experience.
We still
come
together
through work
and play,
through
exploration
and
learning.
We still
eat nourishing food together,
communing over meals well-raised
and well-prepared. We still gather
around the campfire to express
gratitude and hear stories to close
our week together. We still revel in
something as ordinary as the rising
sun. Amidst all of the changes, the
Glen Brook spirit remains. W

Glen Brook Gap Semester
by Shai Rosenfeld, Gap Director
An Unexpected Gap Year
Covid-19 has forced many young
people into a gap year despite their
other plans. With high school seniors
finding themselves online since March
they, like us, are finding themselves in
an in-between space.
Gap at Glen Brook has always been
a place for young people to connect
deeply with each other and the
natural world. This coming fall
semester is no different. Fourteen
Gappers have been accepted to

outside world and experience
community life while engaging with
everything from everyday
homesteading chores to adventuring
on a canoe trip or hiking trail.
experience, more and more young
people are realizing that being
together and doing meaningful work
with their hands in the dirt (literally
and metaphorically) is their top
priority. We have been swamped
with inquiries and applications and
are happy to say that though our Fall
semester is full we are accepting
applications for the spring!
After months of isolation and online
teaching we are overwhelmed with
gratitude to be able to welcome new
members to the Glen Brook family. to
take on stewardship together, to

Glen Brook Farm Update
by Sadie Stehlik, former Farm Director
Much has changed for us during
the covid-19 pandemic; this
spring we had no week-long student
programs, and over the summer we
missed our campers, counselors, and
entirely magical experience that is
summer camp. Glen Brook without the
sounds of children playing was
strange and empty. As we
intentionally focus not on what we
have lost, we have seen this radical
and unexpected shift
in our work present
new opportunities on
our farm. We were
unable to hire a farm
staff to carry the
growing season
forward once the
pandemic set in, so
the long-term staff
here and their
families (most of
whom were not farmers per se) all
stepped in to care for our animals and
maintain our gardens so that they
would continue to flourish in the years
to come.
Our mission statement — to leave the
world better than we found it — has
always been satisfying and visible to
enact in our farm. The cattle have
rejuvenated our pastures and hayfields
through the school program director
Jake’s careful rotational grazing
strategies. The pigs were put on
invasive species management, eating
back the choking vines that have
grown into our treelines, re-exposing
the picturesque colonial stonewalls.
Gabriel’s Field, our beloved garden
space was cared for by nearly
everybody living at Glen Brook as we
labored to keep it free of weeds so
that it would be ready for planting
next year.
With all of the farm’s work being
shared amongst the staff and their
families, we’ve
had a chance to
think about what’s
really important for
our campers,
students, gappers,
and adults. What
are the
experiences that
have really
seemed impactful?
How can we
encourage people who come here to
nurture personal responsibility for our
land? What should the shape of our
farm be in years to come? As
everyone who has had a history with
Glen Brook knows, the farm has
changed over the years and will
continue to change as we refine what
is the best experience for our visitors
and the beautiful property that we are
stewarding. We are so excited to
have started working with students
and gappers again, and to bring
them into a space where they can fall
in love with the land and farm
animals, and care for them in return. W

Glen Brook Facilities Update
by Robyn Morin, Culinary Director
The Glen Brook campus, with
its many historic buildings,
and 240 acres, never ceases to
provide opportunities for
maintenance and care. Annual
care includes: staining sheds,
docks, decks, and various
outbuildings; fixing leaky pipes;
replacing old roofs; mowing and
weed whacking the grass;
processing dead trees into
firewood for our wood stoves;
fixing broken windows, and
much more. These varied tasks
invite us ever deeper into a
relationship with Glen Brook,
and each one gives us a chance
to leave the world better than we
found it, and at the same time
better ourselves and our own
ethic of care.
While each act of care for this
place is its own success story
worth heralding, it is always of
course very exciting when there
is something new. This summer,
through the generosity of donors,
we took advantage of the quiet
kitchen to install brand new
floors, and to put a new coat of
paint on the walls and ceiling.
The result is an even more
beautiful and welcoming space
that will last for a very long time.
We look forward to showing you
the space, and sharing a
delicious home cooked meal from
our kitchen with you soon. W

Alumni Spotlight
Keith X. Worthy ‘82
My lifelong journey at
Camp Glen Brook started
with my 4th grade class
trip in 1974 and it was truly love
at first sight. Even at that young
age I was taken by not only the
landscape, but by the history and
the people. The yearly class trips
were the highlight of our school
year and something we, the class
of 1982, still talk about like it was
yesterday. I think our Glen Brook
adventures were so special
because we were being introduced
to so many new things in our lives:
nature, farming, environmental
studies, hiking, earth to kitchen to
table eating, working the land etc.
and we got to experience it with
some of the people we loved most,
our classmates.
After my 11th grade year in 1981
and fresh off a Waldorf Singers
tour of Europe, I was asked by two
of my most beloved mentors, Mr.
Curran and Mr. Rose, if I was
interested in working at the Glen
Brook Summer Camp. Talk about
an offer I couldn’t refuse! I was in
heaven and honored that these two
men who I admired and loved had
asked me to “work” at a place I
had grown to love so much. I was
assigned to be in charge of games
and activities for all of the
campers, and co-counselor with
Marc Strauss, class of 1981, for a
group of boys in the Hill House.
Mr. Curran and Mr. Rose were
instrumental in guiding and
transitioning me into this new role
as a teacher, counselor, mentor,
and role model. It developed my
ability to make sacrifices of what I
might want, or need, or think, for
the good of what was best for
others, particularly the children. I
had to organize these programs
27
Alumni Spotlight
and classes and each group
dynamic was a different challenge
to find the right fit, again for them
not me. I also would be making
decisions, in my role of
counselor/parent that would affect
the lives of children and I was only
16 myself.
When all was said
and done, I was
amazed at how ready
I was for this task. I
had trials and
tribulations, but I
remember feeling this
was my calling. I
loved working with
the children, and I felt
this is what I want to
do with my life.
I have gone on to
“work” I believe 27
summer camps (and
counting) and 17
winter camps over 5
decades. I have worked under
every director from Curran to
Madsen, Braden, Ryan, Goguen-
Hulbert, and Stehlik. They all
brought something different to the
Camp and taught me various skills,
philosophies, and know-how that I
appreciate, value, and treasure. I
am an old school man of tradition,
but I am always open and willing
to learn. I owe Mr. Curran and Mr.
Rose for believing in me, I owe Mr.
Madsen for bringing me back
home and teaching me so much,
and I owe the others along with
Steve Yardley, Tom Braden, Katy
Gibney (Brenin), Grant Butler, and
Leon Allgood for believing in me
and allowing the journey and love
affair to continue. These people are
my family and lifelong friends.
In my personal life I am blessed to
have a wife, Sandra, who has
been supportive of my Glen Brook
journey and five children
Giavanna, Keith Jr., Ariana,
Matthew, and Joshua who have
taken the journey with me and
have developed a love of Glen
Brook like my own. It has been
instrumental in their growth and
development as people and
definitely made me a better parent
for them.
In my professional life I have
gone from running a residential
program for abused children for 4
years to the last 27 years as a
school counselor (13 years),and
the last 14 years
as a high school
Administrator
and also the
Athletic Director
at Springfield
Central High
School (over
2100 students) in
Springfield,
Massachusetts. I
can honestly say
I have never had
a bad day at
work, and I look
forward to each
day as a new
adventure. I see
challenges and
obstacles as temporary and no
match for work ethic, teamwork,
passion, consistency and grit. I
live by my Glen Brook teaching of
leaving everything better than I
find it.
Glen Brook has given me
everything and owes me nothing.
All I ask of Glen Brook is that it
continues to love all of us like we
love you. W

Annual Report 2019-2020
Message from the
Board of Trustees
by Lance Cheney, Chair
When I reflect on the
challenges we have
faced over the past
six months — as
individuals and as a
School community —
I find myself
searching for fresh
adjectives, but coming up short. So
instead of writing a traditional Board
message, I am using this space as an
expression of profound gratitude to
every person in our School community.
To my Board colleagues – you serve as
volunteers, yet your dedication and
devotion mirrors that of our faculty and
staff. You spend countless hours
helping our School to navigate the
difficult, and often shifting, financial
and operational terrain.
To the faculty and staff – your pivot to
distance learning last spring was
nothing short of remarkable. You
overcame obstacles to ensure that
student learning continued, while
maintaining healthy rhythms. You
served not only the children, but also
their parents, with open hearts and
willing souls.
To our administrative leadership – Kelly
O’Halogan, Helene Smith, and Nicole
Littrean – your leadership enabled
students to return to School in safe and
healthy ways. Your work was so much
more than creating protocols and
checklists, as every decision reflected
the love and devotion you have for the
children and our entire School
community.
To the parents and guardians – you
supported the School through difficult
days. In moments of uncertainty, you
unfailingly recognized that the faculty,
staff and Board were doing their utmost
to continue the School’s mission of
serving your children.
To our devoted alumni and friends –
thank you for continued support of the
School and your endless generosity of
spirit. Your dedication is an inspiration
to us all.
We have been tested as individuals and
as a community. The road ahead
remains challenging, but the buoyancy
and joyfulness of our students as they
return to their beloved Waldorf School
of Garden City gives me hope for
brighter tomorrows. W

School Administrator
by Helene Lafferty Smith
After this year
at The Waldorf
School of
Garden City
(WSGC), I
leave with an
immense feeling
of pride at
having been a part of this
institution. The WSGC team works
tirelessly toward the common goal
of providing a beautiful and thriving
school, where the wellbeing of our
children drives every decision.
The 2019-20 school year brought
many challenges. It required our
students, faculty and staff to be
flexible, adaptive, and patient. We
have all been forced to change
habits and operate outside of our
comfort levels. We have learned to
work within new frameworks, rely
on each other more, and have
undoubtedly grown stronger
together.
While the world is forced to make
virtual relationships, WSGC
continues to keep the human
connection at heart, with drive-by
graduation ceremonies and early
childhood treasure hunts. COVID-19
impacted our second campus at
Glen Brook significantly. Without
summer camp, the focus was placed
on maintenance and planning. Glen
Brook was able to host seniors for
orientation week in August, and will
continue to welcome students
throughout the fall.
Our diverse Board and the School’s
leadership showed its strength in
maintaining clear policies and
procedures. The long history of
sound financial management and
ongoing strategic budgeting has
allowed the School to run smoothly
through this turbulent time. The
Emergency Relief Fund was created
with the purpose to provide
additional tuition assistance for
families affected financially by
COVID-19. This fund raised more
than $200,000, making it possible
for many students to continue at
WSGC and illustrates the
commitment of our community.
At the forefront of Waldorf
education, WSGC plays a critical
role in empowering its students to
make positive changes in the world.
In my time here I continuously
witnessed how committed the
School is to Diversity, Equity and
Inclusion. During times of crisis this
important work is often placed on
hold as we focus on short term crisis
management, but at WSGC it
remains a priority.
I depart with great sadness but I am
confident that deep roots in our
guiding Waldorf principles will
ensure WSGC continues to grow
and its children flourish. W

Dear Waldorf Community –
The Waldorf School of Garden
City has experienced many trials
and tribulations, while continually
working to better serve our
students, families, alumni, and
friends. As we say goodbye to a
spring and summer we
won’t soon forget, it is
apparent that the
Waldorf community is
embarking on a year of
new challenges.
The Parent-Teacher
Association, now more than ever,
is committed to engaging with you
throughout this upcoming year.
Waldorf prides itself on traditions.
At the heart of those traditions are
the relationships within the
Waldorf community. We hoped to
all be back on campus this fall for
classes and even the Fall Fair, but
disappointingly, we will postpone
gathering for these celebrations in
their traditional format until it is
clearly safe to be physically
together again. We are planning
to strengthen our school and
community and value your
participation, virtual presence, and
dedicated service as we move
through these challenging days
together. WALDORF STRONG!
We look back fondly and with
gratitude to all who helped make
our activities last year memorable
and joyful. Beautiful weather
blessed our Fall Fair. The Artisan
Fair was supported by our
collective enthusiasm. The week of
virtual programming during
the scheduled spring
break in April,
organized by the PTA
Co-Chairs, had
tremendous support from
talented parent and
faculty volunteers.
WALDORF STRONG!
We feel fortunate to work with a
dedicated administration, faculty
and staff who are willing to think
creatively about teaching and
caring for our children and
keeping them safe. And to those
working tirelessly behind the
scenes to help make our virtual
experiences positive and seamless,
we appreciate you.
Dear Waldorf Community, we are
confident in the ability for us all to
thrive because we are WALDORF
STRONG! W

On June 14,
2019, my son
graduated from
The Waldorf
School Garden
City in a beautiful
ceremony attended
by many
community members. I used the
opportunity to share a
quote by James Baldwin
with the class of 2019.
Little did I know at the
time of crafting the
2019 yearbook page
that this very quote
would hold for me a
way forward in the year
of 2020.
The beginning of the
new decade began
quite like many others had, with
friends, family, and a time to sit with
deep appreciation. In March, as
global citizens, we were faced with
a challenge the likes of none of us
had encountered before. For a
moment in time everything seemed
to be turned upside down and the
months ahead seemed to unravel
one week at a time. Out of the
darkness there were glimmers of
light with stories of perseverance,
unity, and fortitude especially from
our Waldorf family.
One thing is crystal clear, “Not
everything that is faced can be
changed, but nothing can be
changed until it is faced.”
“Not everything
that is faced can be
changed, but
nothing can be
changed until it
is faced.”
James Baldwin,
American novelist,
playwright, essayist, poet,
and activist.
Our School has faced enormous
challenges this year and has had to
adapt, shift, balance, and confront
head on all that needed to be
changed and reexamined. The
strength of Waldorf pedagogy
affords us a unique view of the
world which allows us all to
continuously evolve into better
images of our old selves.
Development and Alumni
Relations has always
been about relationships;
however, in the year of
2020 it has ultimately
been about offering
ways to hold each other
up during a time when
so many feel like they
are falling. In the three
years that I have served
as the Director of Development, this
past school year was the most
challenging and the most rewarding.
I witnessed firsthand our community
rally together in support of fellow
alumni, parents, faculty, and friends
even if they themselves were
suffering.
We will all continue to move forward
toward a bright future and help
fellow members of our Waldorf
Community who need extra support,
because quite frankly without each
other we cannot effectively be the
change we want to see in the world.
Thank you for your unwavering
support and dedication. W

One hundred years ago Rudolf Steiner
and Emil Molt had a vision of adopting a
new way of educating children in their
community. Their efforts and planning
were realized with the help of many
diligent factory workers, and the
Waldorf-Astoria Cigarette Factory
became the site of
the first Waldorf
School in 1919.
While Steiner and
Molt took steps to
secure a progressive
education for
children of war-torn
Germany, their
philosophy spread
with the help of other
pioneers. In 1947,
H.A.W. and Mabel
Pew Myrin blazed
the trail in the United
States and were
among the founding
members of what we
know today as The Waldorf School of
Garden City. They both had a strong
belief in Waldorf educational methods
which led to Mrs. Myrin establishing the
Waldorf School Trust in 1960. This was
our School’s first planned gift.
In 2003, to honor this extraordinary
legacy gift, the School established the
Mabel Pew Myrin Legacy Society. Many
years later the society continues to grow,
with members who believe in the values
and principles of Waldorf education and
would like the benefits of their generosity
to support students for decades to come.
There are a number of ways that you can
make a legacy gift to The Waldorf School
of Garden City to qualify for membership
in the Mabel Pew Myrin Legacy Society.
• Name The Waldorf

• Designate the
School as a
beneficiary of your

• List the School as a

• Establish a gift that
provides lifetime
income for you, or
a loved one and
the School.

Alumni
Over the past year, our community came together to tackle a variety of challenges. The
pandemic allowed us to reconnect with each other more deeply and in ways we may
not have chosen in the past. I spent the better part of March and April on daily phone
calls with alumni, checking in, sharing stories, or just simply chatting. It was these
phone calls that put me at ease during a time of so much uncertainty. On May 2nd, I
welcomed my first child into the world. I have so much gratitude for my Waldorf family
and the enormous amount of support I received during this time. I consider myself fortunate to be a part
of this community and I look forward to continuing to grow and learn together. Thank you!

Carole Davenport ’60
completed her first-ever
showing of Minimalist Stone
Sculpture in November of
2019, featuring artists
Hiroyuki Asano of Japan and
Yervand Zakian of New York.
The show took place at the
Tambaran Gallery in
Manhattan. In March of this
year, Carole held another
exhibition, Shinto Redux:
Kami, Shinzo, Shimpo &
Sculpture by
Hiroyuki
Asano. The
first native
religion in
Japan was
Shintoism,
based on
nature and
natural phenomena. Gods, or
kami, were assigned to
include trees, mountains,
waterfalls, locations, animals,
forces of nature. The
exhibition provided insight
into this fascinating religion
and how the Japanese people
dealt with and explained
natural phenomena. For more

Members of the alumni
classes of 1964 and
1965 held a virtual reunion
on Zoom. Philip
Bertenthal '64 arranged
the meetup and was joined by
16 classmates from across the
United States and one from
Australia. Roughly every three
years, the class holds a
destination reunion, and last
September celebrated its 55th
anniversary in Charleston.
For decades, Adrienne
Lecraw Polychron '64,
the class representative, has
been an ambassador for her
fellow alums and the School.
Each month, she sends out
emails in honor of her
classmates' birthdays or their
special milestones. In
addition, members of the
class email witty jokes,
sayings, and videos to one
another. Mrs. Polychron, as a
"lifer," is a strong advocate of
the education being offered at
"our" Waldorf School.
Adrienne's mother, Lydia
"Lee" Lecraw, taught at The
Waldorf School of Garden
City as a class teacher from
1951-1965, taking two
separate classes from 1st
grade through middle school.
In 1966, Mrs. Lecraw became
co-director of the Waldorf
Institute for Adult Education, a
newly created Waldorf
teacher training center at the
School. Students at this
institute studied for two
summers at Adelphi University
and one school year at the
Waldorf Institute. Upon
graduating, they were
awarded a master's degree in
Waldorf education from
Adelphi. After 11 years as
co-director and then director
of the Waldorf Institute, she
retired. Both Mrs. Lecraw and
later, Mrs. Polychron created
a model for us to stand by
that will help us all propel
Waldorf Education into the
next century.

"Playing on the Porch" is a
community event that has
taken place in various
locations throughout the state,
with local musicians
performing at homes,
porches, and lawns, bringing
friends, relatives, and
neighbors together and
encouraging people to
explore the neighborhood
and hear great live music.
Over 20 bands performed
throughout the Village on a
beautiful Saturday afternoon,
and although WSGC Board

What do Waldorf alumni do
together in Los Angeles?
Meet for lunch! Seth
Skolnik '85 and Bob
Gold '73 met a few years
ago at an alumni reunion
event, and even though they
were not in the same class,
their Waldorf shared
experience brings them
together as new friends. The
two reunited for lunch in
November of 2019 in
Marina Del Ray. They shared
laughs as Seth recalled
precisely what was for lunch
every day of the week at
Waldorf! The two were reconnected
this past October
as panelists for our first ever
Virtual Waldorf Symposium.
The members from the
Class of 1985 held a
Zoom Reunion on Monday,
April 13th. Organized by
Seth Skolnik ‘85,
seventeen members of the
class from preschool,
elementary, middle, and
high school years joined the
call. After hearing each class
member's brief updates on
their lives, the group chatted
about the COVID virus and
shared lots of fond memories
from their years in school
together. The group hopes to
get together more regularly
and have more members
from their class participate in
future Zoom gatherings.

insightful and thoughtprovoking
letter to the

North Dakota in response to
the current climate of social
unrest. "As a pediatrician,
health and wellness expert,
and a member of our greater
health care community, what
we know is that racism causes
disease in our communities.
Studies have shown that
decisions we make as doctors,
teachers, employers, and
police are often shaded by
biases that we often don't
know we have. And what we
have learned about bias is
that once we learn what our
biases are, we are able to
better control for them and not
allow them to affect our
decisions as much." Visit

Kieran
Kerekes
'07, having
an
opportunity to
experience the premiere of the
short film thriller, After
Downfall, at the IFP Center in
Brooklyn, in which he played
the lead role of "Nick," was
truly satisfying. The film tells
the story of two young men,
Nick and Isaac, trying to
survive in their apartment,
surrounded by a postapocalyptic
New York, acutely
aware of their need to find
food, but also ever wary of the
threats from the mutated
humans known as Savs (also
known as savages) and the
external radiation that could
end their lives if they are not
careful. A wonderful time was
had that night by the cast,
crew, and audience. The plans
for the film include upcoming
film festival submissions, as
well as distribution via
platforms such as Vimeo and
YouTube, so stay tuned!
Ariana Metzler, '07, a
WSGC "lifer," came back to
work part-time at the School in
2018. In January of 2019, she
was approached to substitute
High School Math for a week,
and the Faculty Chair Assistant
position for Kelly O'Halogan
opened. By 2019 she
accepted the Faculty Chair
Assistant position and many
more class offerings. It all
came quickly, in great
numbers, and all at once!
Ariana has been instrumental
in rolling out all the technical
support and resources for
Distance Learning. A lot of
new things have had to
happen very quickly over a
vast community population. Of
course, this is a team effort
with Communications
Associate Kevin Padilla, but
rolling out Zoom was probably
the biggest struggle.
"It's an odd feeling, but I can't
help but wonder if this social
distancing situation was one of
the reasons that I was meant
to come back to Waldorf.
Working with the students in
the physical classroom is one
of the best things I've had the
privilege to do, along with
having the fortune of revisiting
nostalgic activities from my
time as a student, but my
experiences from college and
the professional world have
adequately prepared me for
helping the School make it
through this crisis. I feel like I
was brought back to the right
place just at the right time,
against many odds."

Earlier this year, Jordan
Carmon '11 worked with
civic associations, senior
centers, political clubs,
churches, etc. to get the
message out about the
importance of getting
everyone counted in this
year's Census. Jordan says,
"The Census decides how
much funding communities
receive for schools, housing,
health care, infrastructure,
and so much more. It decides
how your political
representation in Congress
and the electoral college. It
decides whether businesses
will set up shop in your
community. Especially if you
have children, filling out the
Census is one of the best
things you can do to ensure a
bright future for your
community. That's why we're
hard at work getting the word
about the importance of
everyone filling out the 2020
Census."

University of Oxford in
England. Getting an MBA
from Oxford is an experience
that is truly unique and
exciting as the year includes
much more than the expected
business coursework and
relationship building. As a
member of Pembroke
College, one of the 38
Oxford member colleges,
Sean will live in an institution
founded centuries ago,
sharing meals, experiences,
and stories with students from
all over the world who are
working towards a range of
different degrees. He is very
excited about this adventure
that will push him out of his
comfort zone and help him
grow both personally and
professionally.

2012
For the past six years, Elora
Nadel Niborski '12 has
been living in Arusha,
Tanzania working on several
different projects. This past
year, she focused on working
with Passion Projects
International. The work
involves finding sponsors from
all around the world who are
interested in sponsoring
children in Arusha so that they
can attend a proper English
Medium School, which
provides boarding if
necessary. The organization
has nearly 80 children
(ranging in age) with sponsors
who are doing amazing at
their new School. With
Schools now closing down
due to Covid-19, there is a
significant strain on families
who became accustomed to
their children receiving
sufficient meals at school each
day. Because of this, Elora
and the rest of the Passion
Projects team held a
fundraiser in order to provide
enough dry foods for all of the
families during this difficult
time. They supplied 70kgs to
each family of rice and maize.
Each family was extremely
grateful, and the distribution
of all the foods was a huge
success. Thank you, Elora, for
all that you are doing!

Throughout her five months in
Lima, Julia met so many
amazing people, and her
Spanish improved immensely!
She also had the opportunity
to travel to several exciting
places both inside the country,
including Arequipa, Iquitos,
Cusco, Chile, and Ecuador.
During the last few days,
Julia's mother, current WSGC
Enrollment Director, came
down and visited! She also
got a chance to meet her
remarkable host family, and

Julia's thesis, Connection with
Communities Near and Far:
The Current Status of
Academic Civic Engagement
at Colby, allowed her to
graduate with honors in her
major. She also received the
Community Engagement
award from the department
and was inducted into Phi

senior
seminar on
Harold
Pinter,
Rebecca
did three
make-up
looks
exploring
the duality
of Pinter's
female characters. She was
looking for the face they show
versus the face they hide. Her
Professor told her that it was
one of the most original
projects she had ever
received. Rebecca owes the
conception of this idea to her
Waldorf background.

Recently,

'17 took a
spontaneous trip to Thailand
last summer. They started in
Bangkok, exploring the city,
and eating traditional Thai
food. Next, they took a flight
to Phuket's southern island,
where they found pristine
beaches and met other
travelers from Southeast Asia.
From there, they caught the
local bus up to one of
Thailand's national parks:
Khao Sok. The park is home
to elephants, monkeys, tapirs,
and many other animals. They
finished the trip by flying back
to Bangkok from the city of
Surat Thani.
Massimo says, "Many people
travel the world but are
confined to a resort vacation.
If there is anything we've
learned from this experience,
when traveling somewhere
new, one should try to be
comfortable with being
uncomfortable. When you
open yourself up to the
unknown, you are bound to
learn something new and
meet extraordinary people. I
credit my love of travel and
willingness to try new things to

my Waldorf education, which
taught me always to be open
to new opportunities."
Massimo will be attending the
London School of Economics,
where he hopes to round out
his economics-finance degree.
While the course material is
challenging, he is looking
forward to studying with some
of the world's brightest minds.

Goodbye Class of 2020
– Hello Alumni
Every year the Office of
Development & Alumni
Relations hosts a senior sendoff
event to celebrate the
graduating class and welcome
them to life after high school
as a member of the Alumni
community. This year the
event took place virtually on
June 2, and, although we
could not have a pizza party,
we added another event
called the Alumni Meet-Up for
the members of the classes of
2018, 2019, 2020, and
2021. It was a fantastic
experience for all involved in
both events, and the current
students had a chance to hear
from recent grads as well as
alumni from 2002 and 2012.
A special thank you to these
dedicated Alums who continue
to be the change they want to
see in the world! Tarik

In Memoriam
Ella Dorman
Mrs. Ella Dorman, 90 years of age, passed away peacefully
on Wednesday, October 9, 2019, in Freeport, New York.
She was the beloved mother of Jay Dorman (long-time school
legal counsel, board member, and former board chair) and his
wife Diana, beloved grandmother to three Waldorf lifers:
Jennifer Dorman-Weuker ’95, Kenneth Dorman ’99, and
Joanna Dorman ’05; and beloved great-grandmother to current
Waldorf students: Daniel Dorman ’31 and Sophia Dorman ’34.
We are continually grateful for the contributions the Dorman
family has made and continues to make to our School.
Andrew John Lyke
Andrew John Lyke (Andy), spouse of Karen Gode Lyke ’61
passed away on December 19, 2019 five months after
diagnosis with brain tumors. Born in Philadelphia, PA,
December 22, 1942, he grew up on Long Island, New York.
His career led him to live all over the United States. He and his
wife Karen retired in 2009 to the Toledo area to live close to
one daughter (Sara), and be able to afford to visit his two
other adult children on the West Coast (Celia in Portland OR;
Dan in Petaluma CA). After graduation from Cornell University
(BS and Master of Electrical Engineering), and later an MBA
from Emory U, Andy had a wide-ranging career that
encompassed ‘gathering intelligence’ with the US Army in
Germany, then such diverse areas as locomotives, household
appliances, ceramic computer parts, large scale power
transformers & circuit breakers.
Known for his quick wit and dry humor, he leaves his wife
Karen to whom he was married for ‘‘twelve wonderful years;
out of 53 that’s not so bad,’’ three children, and four
grandchildren.
.
Louise Himelfarb
Ms. Louise Himelfarb, former
faculty and mother of alumni
Larry Himelfarb ’70 and Ellen
(Himelfarb) Skye ‘68 passed
away in her home in Chevy
Chase, MD, on May 26, 2019
of complications from a fall.
Louise taught at The Waldorf School of Garden
City in the late 60s. While her time at Waldorf
was short, her kids say “she is still remembered
fondly by Larry’s classmates for her beautiful red
hair, her watercolor lessons, and overall as a
favorite teacher.”
Louise deeply loved her family. She is survived
by her two children, Larry and Ellen, four
grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, and three
stepsons.
Sheppard Royal Somers
(grandparent)
Faculty parent, and alumni grandparent
Sheppard Royal Somers passed away in
September 2019.
Sheppard was the father of current
woodworking teacher Martin Somers, and
Father-in-Law of current English and Drama
teacher Deirdre Somers. He was also the
grandfather to Sheppard Somers '15 and Fiona
Somers '18.
Grady F. Fuller, Jr.
Grady F. Fuller, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away in November,
2019. Grady leaves behind his beloved wife Diane Fuller, five children, including Keelah Helwig ’89 (Early
Childhood Chair and MAK Teacher),her husband Harry Helwig’88, and 7 grandchildren, including Empress
Helwig ’15 and Nzingha Helwig ’17, and one great-grandson.
Grady had many loves in addition to his family and church, which included traveling, bible history, collecting
books, inspiring youth and he was fascinated by aeronautics. Unfortunately, having been stricken by rheumatic
fever as a child it prevented him from pursuing his dream career as a pilot. Instead, he used his keen intellect as a
technical writer, working for such firms as Northrop Grumman and Sikorsky Aircraft. The highlight of Grady’s
singing career was singing in the Union Baptist Church Men’s Chorale and the Memorial Presbyterian Church
(MPC) Quartet, Men’s Chorus, and the Mass Choir.

In Memoriam
George V. Rose
1930 - 2019
Former Music Director and Faculty Chair
George V. Rose passed away on
November 6th, 2019. He was 89 years
old. He is survived by his wife and
former faculty member Faith Rose, and
his five children: Rebecca ’73, Elizabeth
’76, Charles ’78, Thomas ’82, and
Faith ’86.
Mr. Rose has been associated with The
Waldorf School of Garden City since
1962 when he joined the school as the
Head of the Music Department. Mr. Rose
continued to serve the School in a
leadership position until his retirement in
1997. “George Rose’s leadership in our
School defined an era," said Roland
Rothenbucher, High School Chair. "The
years with George at the helm were
marked by George’s big heart and
generous soul. He genuinely delighted
in his students’ achievements in the
classroom, on stage, and on the playing
fields, and through his magical personal
qualities the School became a beehive of
cultural activities in the Garden City
Community.”
Raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota,
in the gold-mining town of Lead, Mr.
Rose attended Oberlin Conservatory of
Music, where he received his
undergraduate degree and studied Voice
and Conducting. Mr. Rose later earned
a Master’s degree in Music from New
York University. From 1953 to 1955, he
served in the Special Services Division of
the U.S. Army and conducted the Fort
Dix Soldier's Chorus on the ABC
television show “Soldier Parade,” with
Arlene Francis. During the late 1950s,
Mr. Rose taught music at Brooklyn
Friends School and the Great Neck
Public Schools. He also was the Choral
Director at King’s Point Merchant
Marine Academy.
Mr. Rose founded The Waldorf Choral
Society (WCS), which he conducted for
39 years. WCS first began rehearsals in
the fall of 1964 and held its inaugural
concert in 1965. He embraced the early
music movement and established an
annual two-day Bach Festival in the early
1970s. The festival featured
reconstructed baroque instruments, which
captured the distinctive, historic timbre of
the period. He also conducted the Great
Neck Choral Society for 21 years.
Mr. Rose was honored numerous times
by his students and colleagues for his
leadership and his ability to inspire
students and musicians. During the
1999-2000 school year an endowed
scholarship, The George V. Rose Music
Fund, was established, in 1997 the High
School Student Room was named in his
honor by the students, and in 2004 he
received the Franz E. Winkler Leadership
Award at the Waldorf School Gala.
Mr. Rose will be missed for his devotion
to the School. He shared his love of
music, leaving us an enduring legacy
and a gift that enriched our entire
community. “We will forever be grateful
to Mr. Rose for blessing us for so long
with his remarkable talents. His
leadership, his insight, his love, and his
gift of song will always be remembered
and cherished by our community. We
take comfort in knowing that choirs of
angels will now receive his legendary
guidance,” said Trustee, Legal Counsel,
and Alumni Parent, Jay Dorman.
