NDC, NPP MPs must work together
• President-elect
Nana Addo
Dankwa
Akufo-Addo,
who has won
a new fouryear
mandate
as President, has stated that
the results of the 2020 Parliamentary
elections is a clear indication
that Ghanaians want
both the National Democratic
Congress (NDC) and the New
Patriotic Party (NPP) Members
of Parliament (MPs) to work
together for the development
and growth of the nation.
In an acceptance speech at
his Nima residence after he was
declared winner in Monday’s
keenly- contested election, Mr
Akufo-Addo also called on
Ghanaians to unite for the
good of the country after a
very divisive campaign.
The President also condemned
the post-election violence
in some Constituencies
and called on NPP supporters
to be decorous and modest as
they celebrate their well-deserved
victory.
President Akufo-Addo said
he was determined to do all in
his power "to accomplish the
task of this new mandate and
thereby justify the confidence
reposed in me. I assure you,
fellow Ghanaians, that I will do
my best not to let you down."
President Nnana Akufo-Addo
Olive branch
"The period for campaigning
is over and the outcome of
the election has been decided.
The Ghanaian people through
the results, have made it loud
and clear that the two parties:
the NDC and NPP must work
together, especially in Parliament,
for the good of the
country", President Akufo-
Addo said.
"Now is the time for each
and every one of us, irrespective
of our political affiliation
to unite, join hands, stand
shoulder to shoulder and work
hard to place Ghana where she
deserves to be; a prosperous
and dynamic member of the
global community making her
own unique contribution to the
growth of world civilization."
Immediate task
Laying out the immediate
task of his second term, President
Akufo-Addo promised to
regain Ghana's reputation as
the fastest-growing economy in
the world by reversing the effect
of the COVID-19 pandemic
on the Ghanaian
economy and the lives of its
citizens.
He added that he would do
everything possible to put the
nation on course for a full economic
recovery.
"Before the pandemic
struck, Ghana in recent years
was one of the fastest-growing
economies in the world. I give
you my word, we will regain
that reputation," he said.
Best Election
The President also commended
the Jean Mensa-led
Electoral Commission for delivering
what he described as
"one of the best elections" in
the history of Ghana.
He said the poll held on
Monday across the country's 16
regions had won universal acclaim,
even in the midst of the
COVID-19 pandemic.
"The Electoral Commission,
even in the midst of the pandemic,
has done a yeoman's job
and we can only urge them to
continue on the path and
achieve even greater strides in
future".
President Akufo-Addo commended
the Ghanaian electorate
for their orderliness and
adherence to COVID-19 safety
protocols on election day.
He also commended the
country's security services and
the media for contributing towards
the success of the poll.
Condemnation
The President condemned
what he described as "isolated
incidents of post-electoral violence"
in Odododiodoo and
Techiman that resulted in the
death of four persons.
"We must work to avoid a
repetition of such events in future,"
he stressed.
Moderate celebrations
Urging moderate celebrations
by supporters of the
NPP, President Akufo-Addo
said they should desist from
untoward acts.
"At the end of the day, despite
holding different political
views, we shall all remember
that we are all part of one family,
one Ghanaian family with a
common overriding agenda
which is to oversee the growth
and development of Mother
Ghana.
"Let us continue to conduct
ourselves with decorum and
maintain the peace and stability
of the nation which is the envy
of many around the world."
He further pledged to advance
the peace, progress and
prosperity of all Ghanaians.
"The period for campaigning
is over and
the outcome of the
election has been
decided. The Ghanaian
people through
the results, have
made it loud and
clear that the two
parties: the NDC and
NPP must work together,
especially in
Parliament, for the
good of the country",
President Akufo-
Addo said.

Below is the full statement:
SECURITY OUTLOOK FOR
THE 2020 GENERAL ELEC-
TIONS*
1.The National Election Security
Taskforce (NESTF) has policed
the 2020 Presidential and
Parliamentary elections professionally
and lauds the public for their
cooperation with pre-election security
measures put in place and
executed throughout the electioneering
period.
Recorded cases.
2. However, between 0700
hours of December 7, 2020 and
1000 hours of December 9, 2020,
the Joint Operation Centre of the
NESTF has recorded a total of 61
electoral and post- electoral incidents
nationwide. Twenty-one of
the incidents are true cases of
electoral violence, six of which involve
gunshots resulting in the
death of five.
3.The cases involving gunshots
occurred as follows:
i.Central Region: Awutu Senya
East Constituency - 2 injured from
a shooting incident by civilian(s) in
the community during election period
on 07-12-20.
ii.Greater Accra Region:
Odododiodio Constituency - 2
dead and 6 injured from a shooting
incident by civilian(s) in the
community during post-election

Constituency: 1 dead and 3 injured
from a shooting incident by civilian(s)
in the community during
post-election period on 08-12-
20.4.
The NESTF deems the incidents
recorded to be incidents that
could have been avoided and
therefore condemns their occurrence
and promises to investigate
each one of them.
Fake News
5.The NESTF sighted old
videos in circulation, portrayed as
incidents related to the ongoing
electioneering exercise. The videos
included police regional simulation
exercises in the run-up to this
year’s elections, where the media
were invited to cover as part of
Police engagement with the media,
as key stakeholders of Ghana’s
democracy.
6.Once again, the NESTF condemns
these publications and
warns that it is against the law for
any person to send false or misleading
communication. Any person
who indulges in such will be
arrested and prosecuted.
NDC rejects ‘flawed’
results
The National Democratic Congress
(NDC) has rejected the results
of the 2020 presidential
elections announced by the Electoral
Commission yesterday.
Addressing a press conference
moments after the EC Chairperson
declared President Nana
Akufo-Addo as the winner of the
keenly contested election, Minority
Leader and a leading member of
the NDC, Haruna Iddrisu, said the
party has overwhelming evidence
that proves that the party’s candidate,
John Dramani Mahama won
the election.
“As a party, we have had extensive
consultations and detailed
analysis of the outcome of the
elections as announced by Jean
Mensa, the EC chair…We have
come to only one irresistible conclusion,
that it is a flawed discredited
election and therefore we
reject the presidential result without
any reservation,” he said.
From the EC’s collated results,
Mr Akufo-Addo polled 6,730,413
representing 51.59% of the total
votes cast while his closest contender,
John Mahama of the NDC
also polled 6,214,889 which gives
him 47.36% of the total votes cast.
But Mr Iddrisu said the NDC
believe that there are attempts to
rob the party of both their presidential
and parliamentary victory.
He revealed that John Mahama
had written a petition to the EC
before the results were announced
to voice his concerns over the collation.
“That (petition) was treated
with utmost contempt and that we
consider unacceptable. We also
want to serve notice that the blatant
effort even to deny us a parliamentary
majority will be
fiercely resisted…this evening
Ghana’s democracy has come
under severe attack and needs
some rescue urgently.”
“If not rescued these attacks
will foster and grow into
future elections and that will
disfigure our track record, as a
true democratic nation,” he
added.

EC must let will of people manifest
YESTERDAY, THE chairperson of
the Electoral Commission Mrs Jean
Mensa declared the 2020 Presidential
elections in favour of Nana Addo
Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic
Party as the president-elect despite
some concerns from the National
Democratic Congress.
From the EC’s collated results, Mr
Akufo-Addo polled 6,730,413 representing
51.59% of the total votes cast
while his closest contender, John Mahama
of the NDC also polled 6,214,889
which gives him 47.36% of the total
votes cast.
However, the National Democratic
Congress (NDC) has rejected the results
of the 2020 presidential elections as decared
by the Electoral Commission yesterday.
Moment after the EC Chairperson
declared President Nana Akufo-Addo,
as the winner, Minority Leader and a
leading member of the NDC, Haruna
Iddrisu, said the party has overwhelming
evidence that proves that the party’s
candidate, John Dramani Mahama won
the election.
He said “as a party, we have had extensive
consultations and detailed analysis
of the outcome of the elections as
announced by Jean Mensa, the EC
chair…We have come to only one irresistible
conclusion, that it is a flawed discredited
election and therefore we reject
the presidential result without any reservation,”
he said.
Mr Iddrisu explained that, the NDC
believe that there are attempts to rob
the party of both their presidential and
parliamentary victory.
He revealed that John Mahama had
written a petition to the EC before the
results were announced to voice his
concerns over the collation.
“That (petition) was treated with utmost
contempt and that we consider
unacceptable. We also want to serve notice
that the blatant effort even to deny
us a parliamentary majority will be
fiercely resisted…this evening Ghana’s
democracy has come under severe attack
and needs some rescue urgently.”
“If not rescued these attacks will foster
and grow into future elections and
that will disfigure our track record, as a
true democratic nation,” he added.
The DAILY HERITAGE is of the
considered view that the posture of the
EC when it failed to grant audience to
the former President Mahama's petition
was worrying.
What would have been expected
would be that, the EC would have
granted audience to such a petion from
the former President and address his
concerns before going ahead to declare
the winner.
The NDC said they were rejecting
the "flawed" elections and the paper
urges the leadership to follow all the
available channels in having their grievances
addressed.
The EC must go back to the table
immediately and ensure that all the concerns
raised are addressed for the will
of the people to manifest.
NDC to contest parliamentary elections, as big guns fall
The National Democratic
Congress
(NDC) has said it has
won 140 seats out of
the 275 seats in Parliament
which means
it has won majority in parliament.
The NDC alleged however that attempts
are being made by the New
Patriotic Party in conineval with the
EC and some military personnel to
change the will of the people.
Lawyer Abrahma Amaliba, a legal
team member of the NDC told
Agoo TV that any attempt to deny
the NDC majority in parliament as
per what has been decided by the
people, would be resisted.
Hurricane hits parliamentary
election as big guns fall
A political hurricane of incredible
magnitude swept through the
parliamentary polls when 31 Members

sides of the House tumbled.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP)
MPs suffered 28 casualties, including
ministers, ministers of state and
deputy ministers, crumbling under
the weight of their opponents from

While the NDC lost in few constituencies,
it made inroads into NPP
territories.
For the big shots that fell, and
their political parties, they might be
undergoing some quiet introspection
to establish what went wrong.
The voting pattern has indicated
what has come to be known in political
parlance as “skirt and blouse” .

Rains, others affected results
declaration timeline –Jean Mensa
THE CHAIR-
PERSON of the
Electoral Commission
(EC)
Mrs Jean Mensa,
has said rains
and other challenges on election
day affected the timeline
set for results declaration.
The EC failed on its promise
to announce results 24
hours after the polls.
“We express our regret for
our inability to declare the results
at 5 pm on Tuesday as
planned. The unexpected rains
and some of the challenges we
experienced at the collation
centre made it difficult to declare
the result as expected,”
she told the Media at a press
briefing on Tuesday night.

dential and Parliamentary polls
would be declared on Wednesday,
December 9, 2020.
“As we speak, the Commission
has received 14 out of the
16 regional results. We have the
national collation centre where
we have had representatives of
the various political parties
since yesterday.
“As the results come in, the
party representatives review
them against what they themselves
have received from the
regions and once they are satisfied
that the results that have
come to us from the regions
are a true reflection of what
they have received, they then
append their signatures,” she
noted.
Background
The EC last month defended
its decision to announce
the results of the
December 7 Presidential elections
within 24 hours.
The NDC kicked against
any hasty decision from the EC
following its earlier announcement.
But addressing the media,
Mrs Mensa gave an assurance
that adequate measures had
been deployed to ensure timely
transmissions of all 16 regions.
She also noted that the CI
127 governing the elections allows
for Constituency results
to be sent to the regions for
subsequent forwarding to the
EC head office, unlike before
when the head office received
results directly.

Take all points against Nigeria–Albert Commey tells Satellites
VICE-CHAIRMAN of the Black
Satellites Management Committee,
Mr Albert Commey has challenged
the players to make every
effort to beat Nigeria in the
WAFU Zone B U-20 championship.
The Black Satellites face the
Flying Eagles on Wednesday December
9 at the ongoing tournament
in Benin.
The match is Ghana’s first
group game after drawing a bye in
the first round of games. Ghana’s
group comprises 3 teams meaning,
a win will be enough to book
a last 4 berth; with the top two
teams in the competition securing
spots at next year’s Africa U-20
Championship.
“Play the game already in your
mind even before tomorrow
comes. You need total concentration
and therefore must eschew
things that can potentially affect
your concentration,” Commey
told the players after their final
training session.
“Tomorrow, no matter what,
Nigeria must fall,” he emphasized.
“When the Satellites do well, it
reflects on the future of the Black
Stars. So, if you want to be
counted among the standouts, it
all starts from tomorrow [against
Nigeria]. The first match is very
important. Let’s take all three
points,” Mr. Commey added.
The Black Satellites will play
Nigeria at Stade de Gaules on
Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at
4pm. A win for Ghana will put
them in the driving seat following
the 1-1 draw between Nigeria and
Cote D’Ivoire in their opening
Group B game.footballmadienghana.com
