20 | 01907A Life Saving Stationfinds new lifeBY MIKE ALONGIThe Nahant Life Saving Station, whichsits prominently on Nahant Road, hasseen a lot in its 120 years of existence.Since its establishment in 1900, the LifeSaving Station has housed the Life SavingService, the United States Coast Guard,an American Legion Post and a host ofother organizations. And now, the stationis finding new life as an event venue.In response to the tragic wreck(including loss of the crew) of thecoal schooner Charles Briggs off thecoast of Nahant in the winter of 1898,Massachusetts Senator Henry CabotLodge was moved to request that thetown vote “to give to the United States asuitable site for a Life Saving Station.”The station was established in 1900,and was one of 33 such stations builtin the state. It is the only one that wasnot built to a standard plan, and is oneof only 12 stations to survive in anysignificant form today.Designed by architect VictorMindeleff — the station is unique amongthe life-saving stations, as it is designedto launch rescue boats on both oceanand harbor sides of the station. TheLife Saving Station is also listed in theMassachusetts Register of Historic Places,having been placed on the list in 2012.The Life Saving Service latercombined with the U.S. Revenue CutterService in 1915 to become what weknow now as the U.S. Coast Guard. TheCoast Guard Station remained active atthe station until 1964.The federal government maintainedthe buildings as a seasonal recreationalsite for members of the Armed Forcesuntil 1996.
