Dear Guest,
We hope you will enjoy reading our information booklet and
become inspired to discover Zanzibar‘s treasures, maybe even
Tanzania‘s National Parks with us. AMO Zanzibar Tours &
Safari is a family owned, well established tourism company,
situated in the middle of Stone Town‘s maze. I was born and
raised in Pemba, Chake Chake, speaking Kiswahili as my
mother tongue as well as fluent English. I have studied
tourism at the The State University of Zanzibar but I have also
got a deep understanding for guests from all over the world
and their needs from my beloved father who has been
working as commissioner of tourism for many years. Not only
my experience in the tourism industry formed our company‘s
success; the breakthrough came shortly after Noreen Cichon
joined not only the company but more importantly my
private life. She was born and raised in Germany, speaking
her mother tongue, German, fluently as well as English and
basic Kiswahili and French. Noreen studied Business
Administration with a focus on Financial Management. She
answers inquiries of all kinds, but also takes care of our entire
marketing.
Noreen Cichon
Together, we aim to offer thoughtful
and therefore responsible tourism,
which provides our guests with an
authentic insight into the Swahili coast
territory and the region, while
minimizing the negative aspects of
mass tourism in terms of
environmental and social degradation.
But above all, we will need to count on the strengths,
knowledge and ability of our employees, HALIMA, our head
reservation manager, SAIDA our assistant reservation
manager, SALMA, our first female guide, SALUM, our
concierge, HAJI, one of our drivers and our french
representive MATHILDE (to name a few, but not the entire
team) - people who are prepared to “go the extra mile”,
and who make the vital difference between AMO Zanzibar
Tours & Safari and competitors.
The protection of our environment is a precondition for
success and sustainability. Eco-friendly tourism as well as
a personal touch of the Swahili culture is a MUST for us.
Reviews and feedback can be found and given on
TRIPADVISOR.

Walk with us along the narrowest streets in the world during this half day tour.
Within three well-invested hours you will gain a good understanding of the
fascinating history of Zanzibar’s capital city and its significant areas, buildings and
historical sites. You will soon notice how Zanzibar’s cosmopolitan roots (Arabs,
Indians, Yemenis, Persians, Portuguese, British, Chinese and others) blend with
African traditions to shape its unique culture. There are distinctive features of Arab
and Indian urban architecture to discover at every turn, such as the famous
Zanzibar doors, elaborately carved with ornaments and verses from the Q’ran
(Arab) orplants and animals (Indian), decorated with brass studs, quaint balconies
and verandas, small hidden gardens, saint’s graves, and much more.
Start (best) at 8.30 am and the latest at 2.30 pm (tour
duration approx. 3 to 4 hours). Including specific sites in
Stone Town, such as Old Anglican Church, Darajani
Market, Old Arab Fort, Beit al Ajaib - House of Wonders,
St.Joseph's Cathedral, entrance fees at Former Slave
Market, Sultan Palace Museum, Hamamni Persian Baths,

BE WELL PREPARED
We suggest to pick up our guests as early as the
hotel's breakfast timing allows, because we love
walking through Stone Town in the cooler
morning, when local people just awake and start
their daily routine, while there are less tourists
around.
Wearing shoulder and knee covering clothes in
Stone Town will be much appreciated, but on the
beaches people also accept shorter clothes.
Please note that the Beit al Ajaib Museum (House
of Wonders) is presently not accessible. It has
been in danger of imminent collapse for quite
some time, until finally the Omani government
decided to repair the most important monument
of East Africa, so now it is closed for urgent
renovation.
If you would like to enjoy a full day tour,
combine this tour with for example:
The Zanzibar Tea Ceremony or Sundowner
& Dinner at Emerson On Hurumzi
The Prison Island Journey (with or without Snorkelling
at the coral reef of Bawe Island)
The Spice Plantation Walk with typical Swahili lunch in
private, rural ambiance

A place as vibrant and diverse as Zanzibar is an adventure for all senses. Absorb the colours in the streets –
the men in their white "kanzus", women in black "buibuis" and colourful "khanga" wraps, the abundance of
fruit and vegetables in the market, the play of shadow and light in the narrow streets, and of course the
many friendly faces in all shades of complexion. Listen to the sounds of Stone Town - people chatting,
children playing, street vendors praising their wares, Reggae, Indian and Western music, and the melodious
recitation of the Quran. Five times a day, you will hear the Muslim call to prayer in Arabic from numerous
small mosques all over the town; at other times, its bells from Hindu temples or Christian churches.
This personalized tour offers a picture of local Zanzibari life and culture amongst the men, women and
children on the island, and just how the community deals with all the different issues that arise from day to
day. Round off your evening with a private Swahili dinner on one of Stone Town's rooftop terraces with a
360° view, a lovely sea breeze and the enchanting melodies of a traditional Qanun.
1 guest - US$ 95 / 2 guests - US$ 65 / 3 guests - US$ 55 / 4 guests and more - US$ 50 per person

Half Day Tour
A spice tour is a wonderful way of exploring the countryside around Stone Town and Zanzibar’s rural
communities. Indeed no trip to Zanzibar can be considered complete without a visit to one of our carefully
selected spice farms. For centuries Zanzibar's spices, medicinal plants and tropical fruits attracted traders across
the Indian Ocean. This 3-4 hour tour will seduce your senses with a mixture of various smells, tastes and textures.
Among the manydifferent plants, you will encounter are the henna bush, ylang-ylang, the lipstick tree, iodine
plant, cocoa, cassava, dasheen cocoyam and – yes, Zanzibar coffee! Explore the island’s abundance of mouthwatering
tropical fruits like jackfruit, pineapples, bananas, green coconut (madafu), durian, love apple (matufaa),
rambutan (shoki-shoki), soursop (mabungo) and starfruit (carambola). We round off the leisurely farm walk with
a home-cooked lunch in private rural ambience. The lunch consists of a wide range of typical Swahili meals
prepared to perfection by a local farmer and his wife. Start (best) at 9.30 am / ends at 2 pm or later.
If you would like to do a full-day tour, combine this tour for example with:
The Spice Plantation Walk first and then the Zanzibar Beauty Experience. You can add our Swahili Cooking
Lesson to discover the secrets and essentials of the island's traditional cuisine for US$ 15 per person.
Or visit the Mangapwani Palmtree Plantations, Beach and other highlights (read below) afterwards.

Full Day Tour
The half-day Spice Tour experience ends after lunch, and if you have chosen a full-day excursion, your guide and driver
will take you onwards to Mangapwani. It has a lovely white sandy beach - and a very dark history: slaves used to be
“stored” in an underground rock chamber on their way to and from the island. You can visit this chamber; it is part of
Zanzibar’s past, just like all its beauty and riches. And then it is time to relax! We go to the beach for some swimming
and sunbathing before we will return to your hotel.
Start (best) at 9.30 am / ends latest after sunset. Including private guide, typical Swahili lunch in private ambience,
seasonal fruits, non-alcoholic beverages, optional stopover at Kidichi Persian Baths (ruins) & 18% VAT.

The legendary Princess Salme sent shockwaves through Zanzibar and remains unforgotten! Experience the
famous Spice Island while following her footsteps. Your tour begins in the early morning with a visit to
the Princess Salme Museum, where founder & curator, Mr Said El-Gheithy will provide a deep and complete
insight into Zanzibar's history at the time of the sultans and princesses. You'll be treated to a traditional
coffee or tea ceremony and enjoy Zanzibari sweets before a 25 minutes drive will take you to the island's spice
farm area. If you wish we will stop briefly at the remains of the Mtoni Palace ruins. This impressive site was
once home of the first Sultan of Zanzibar (Sayyid Said) and the birthplace of his daughter Sayyida Salme, who
later eloped with a German merchant to live in Hamburg; her bestselling book gives a lot of interesting details
about her life in the palace. Your tour continues with a leisurely walk around a lovely spice plantation, where
you will see, learn about and taste the abundance of spices, fruits and herbal remedies grown in Zanzibar. To
round off the experience, you will be served a delicious home-cooked lunch, surrounded by the sights and
sounds of Zanzibar’s countryside. You will visit the Persian Baths in Kidichi, built for Sultan Seyyid Said's
second wife, Sheherazade, who was the granddaughter of the Persian Shah. A 15 minutes drive will take you to
Salome's garden, a stunning Omani mansion that once belonged to Salme's uncle. It won't be possible to enter
the lovely garden, but here we end the tour with a relaxing, leisurely sailing cruise on a traditional dhow along
the seafront of Stone Town's outskirts to return to the old town's centre.
Start (best) at 8.30 am / ends at 4 pm or later. Including
all transfers concerning the tour, starting in Stone Town
and returning to Stone Town, a private guide throughout
the day, entrance fees at the Princess Salme Museum, a
traditional coffee or tea ceremony, entrance fees at

Spend a day cycling in Zanzibar, and it will be hard not to feel like you have
discovered some kind of secret ! With the warm wind in your hair, groups of
excited children yelling “Jambo!” or “howah-yoouu” after you, and the
exhilaration of making your own way, it is truly the best way to get to know
a place. This tour takes you through the outskirts of Stone Town into the
Masingini Forest to the highest point of Zanzibar, where you will have a
spectacular view of the town and the ocean. Stop there at our preferred
spice plantation for a unique Spice Tour with a locally cooked Zanzibar
lunch. Passing through the countryside on your bicycle will bring you in
close contact with nature and village life, and you will see and experience
much more of your surroundings than from a car window. The tour
requires a medium fitness level. There are ascents, but we believe there are
more challenging ones in European countries with real mountains. You
would have to manage 30 km of cycling in total (15 km per way).
Please be aware that this tour is weather dependent and
not suitable during or after heavy rain.
Starts usually at 9 am from Stone Town.
Including mountain bike and helmet rental, private guide
throughout the day, 1-litre drinking water per person a typical
Swahili lunch in a private, rural ambience, non-alcoholicbeverages,
seasonal fruits, optional stopover at Kidichi Persian Baths (ruins),

Please note that road traffic here in Zanzibar has increased dramatically in
recent years! There are 20 minutes of cycling through wild traffic which we
cannot avoid and for which you need to have a calm, focused mind and strong
nerves.
If you like, you can also visit the Masingini Forest Nature Reserve. There are
plenty of monkeys (red and black colobus), different tree species and it’s a
paradise for those who are into birding. We have spotted the malachite
kingfisher, the forest weaver, Madagascar squacco heron, little bulbul, olive
sunbird and many others so don’t forget to take your binoculars!
The entrance fee to the reserve (US$ 10 per person) is not included in the rate.

This is a great opportunity to get in touch with the
daily village life and explore the northern part in a
sportive way. You will cycle through rural villages,
visit a Natural Turtle Aquarium and the dhow
shipyard, explore Portuguese ruins dating back to
the 16th century, you can swim in a tidal, clear
water cave, try your hands at being a blacksmith
(local style) and adventure through recently
discovered stunning coral caves filled with
stalagmite and stalactite crystal rocks.
If you have ever wondered how the lovely photogenic dhows (traditional wooden sailing boats) are being built,
you have come to the right place. Nungwi’s dhow builders are famous for their craft, and you can watch them
at work not far from the ocean. You will see dhows in all phases of their construction and learn about the
whole process, from the sourcing of the wood, the joints used, to the rituals of launching a new dhow. To end
the tour you will visit the Fukuchani Natural Turtle Aquarium, a village initiative that provides shelter and
protection to chameleon, butterflies, turtles and fish. The aquarium itself is a natural pool carved out from the
coral bedrock by the erosion of millions of waves crashing against the shore. The water rises and falls with the
tides, providing a natural environment for its inhabitants.

If you are getting tired of lying on the beach or have already experienced the tours and excursions
Zanzibar has to offer, why not ride down the beach, at sunset or explore coconut plantations on
horseback?
The riding camp at Sea Cliff Resort & Spa has been set up by Rosa and Gary Stander and caters for both
experienced riders and those who have never ridden before. At the moment they have three horses: one pure
breed Appaloosa (Charly Brown), one Appaloosa/cross (Nottingham) and a pony (Prophet). The horses were
chosen for their hardy breed, gentle temperament and suitability for the climate and the work required of them.
There are many different options to choose from, and trips can be discussed upon booking and custom-tailored.
One popular option is to ride through the coconut plantations, then onto the beach to watch the sunset. At low
tide, the more experienced riders can canter along the beach.
The Horse Riding costs (always) US$ 60 per person. This includes also to stay at the resort for the beginning
or the rest of the day without any extra charges for using the pools and enjoying the different scenery.
We offer 1-hour rides ( which often are a LITTLE longer ) as follows:
Beach Ride at LOW TIDE - this beach ride has a lot more space for a faster pace.
Dip in the ocean at HIGH TIDE - this is a quiet ride with not much beach to canter.
Sunset rides at high and low tides.
Ride through the newly opened golf course with lovely views of the plantations
Plantation Ride – this option has taken a backseat in favour of the relaxed and scenic golf course ride
ALL THE RIDES ARE SUITABLE FOR FIRST TIME RIDERS AS WELL !
The horse riding might seem expensive compared with international
prices, but please be aware that it is very difficult to keep horses in a good,
healthy condition here in Zanzibar. The stables at Sea Cliff Resort & Spa
provide the most sustainable horse riding option. Please note that we do
have to mind high and low tides for most of the mentioned horse riding
options and therefore often struggle with last-minute arrangements.

About 20 minutes by boat from Forodhani area lies Changuu, also known as Prison Island. This name is
misleading; although the once impressive building, erected in 1893 by Lloyd Mathews under orders of the British
administrators, was originally intended as a prison, it never housed criminals. The island was, however, reportedly
used by an Arab slave trader to contain the feistier and more troublesome slaves he had brought from the African
mainland. Later it became a quarantine station - but mostly it was a conveniently located leisure spot for the
wealthier townsfolk. The old prison's crumbling cells can still be seen today; they provide shelter for the resident
peacocks and the giant Aldabra tortoises that the British governor of Seychelles sent as a gift to Sultan Khalifa
bin Haroub in 1919. Some of them are almost a hundred years old. The island is also an ideal place for
sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling, or simply relaxing on the white sandy beach.
1 guest - US$ 60 / 2 guests - US$ 35 / 3 guests - US$ 30 / 4 guests - US$ 25 / 5 guests and more -
US$ 20 per person
Please ask for the rate if you are a group of more than 10 persons and/or if you would like us to use a dhow boat

This is a relaxing day trip on either a traditional dhow (luxury private cruise) or a local motorboat with sunscreen (private local
option). We are leaving from Stone Town's seafront (either in front of Tembo Hotel or Forodhani Garden) for Prison Island, locally
known as Changuu Island. There you will visit the ruins of the prison building and the giant Aldabra tortoises - a present from the
governor of the Seychelles to Sultan Khalifa bin Haroub in 1919. You will have time to snorkel at the coral garden of Bawe Island
before we are setting off again to the Nyange sandbank, which is quite far and therefore off the beaten track, and surrounded by a
colourful coral reef. On the way breakfast with ginger-spiced tea and juices, homemade bread and seasonal fruits will be served
during the luxury option. Lounge and relax on the sparkling white sandbank, get a nice tan and enjoy the wonderful clear blue
waters of the Indian Ocean. On the sandbank, a Swahili style buffet lunch & seafood BBQ will be served with non-alcoholic
drinks. Italian cheese and white wine will be offered in addition when choosing the shared luxury option.

Mnemba Atoll is a protected marine area off north eastern Zanzibar near Matemwe, with excellent visibility depths
ranging from 10 to 30 meters. It includes the small triangular island of Mnemba and a reef area of roughly 2 by 4
miles. This breathtaking marine ecosystem is famous for sightings of green turtles and dolphins that like to join you as
you snorkel or dive; depending on the season, you may even spot migrating humpback whales, who announce their
presence with an occasional spout of water.
The price per person (also children from 10 years) is always US$ 45 no matter how many persons join - max 12 guests on the
same boat. Including sterilized quality snorkelling equipment, wetsuit & professional instructor, Mnemba Atoll Conservation Area
fee, drinking water, tea, local snacks, seasonal fruits & 18% VAT.
You will enjoy two 45 minute long snorkelling sessions at different sites. In between your snorkel stops you will have a 45-minute
break with snacks and tea. Following your last stop, the boat will return to the dive centre. If you have never dived before but
would like to (instead of snorkelling), you can also consider the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program!
It is possible to spot dolphins either from the boat or while snorkelling.
However, please note that there is no guarantee to see
dolphins because they remain wild animals in their ocean!
The ability to swim is not necessary for this activity. You can snorkel with
a life jacket, assisted by a life ring and your guide. To be well prepared,
please make sure to inform us if you cannot swim.

Jozani Forest is the last area of indigenous forest in Zanzibar and part of the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. It is
home to roughly one-third of the remaining endemic Kirk’s Red Colobus monkeys, one of Africa's rarest primates, and
many other species of animals and plants. Jozani Forest’s 44 sq km, about 3% of the whole island, comprises
of groundwater forest, coastal forest and grassland, as well as mangroves and salt marsh on the coast. It provides a
habitat for a wide variety of mammals, birds and butterflies. A walk through this impressive flora and fauna is one of
the highlights Zanzibar has to offer. The reserve has excellent nature trails to explore and your tour with us includes
also visiting the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre. This community project aims to protect endangered species of butterflies,
to educate both local people and visitors and to provide an income for villagers. Set in 5000 sq/ft of beautiful
gardens only 5 minutes by car from the Jozani Forest, it offers the opportunity to see butterflies very close (they might
even settle on your hand !), to feed them and to learn all about their fascinating life cycle. The income of the Zanzibar
Butterfly Centre is channelled back into various local projects, particularly those that are involved in conservation and
poverty alleviation.

This tour takes you beyond the picturesque Stone Town and offers deeper insights into urban development from
earlier centuries onwards until today. As can be expected in such a cosmopolitan place as Zanzibar, there is a
range of distinctive architectural features, reflecting the different ethnical, social and religious backgrounds of her
inhabitants. There are modest Swahili family dwellings, imposing Arab style townhouses with thick walls and inner
courtyards, Indian merchants’ houses and elegant palaces with verandahs and intricate decorations, and colonial
buildings in a variety of styles – all laid out in winding, shady, sloping alleyways, to make the best use of the limited
space and to meet the needs of Stone Town’s inhabitants. BUT learn also how modern-day Zanzibar Town evolved,
from East Africa’s first street lighting and water piping to public recreational areas and post-revolution housing
projects. Admire the extravagant, Moorish/Saracen inspired buildings of British architect Sir John Sinclair and hear
the background story of Creek Road and the Michenzani flats. Discover all these architectural intricacies with your
guide, their socio-cultural significance, traditional building methods and conservation efforts in this unique World

This is a truly unique experience! Tumbatu is one of
Zanzibar’s best-kept secrets, as the inhabitants are
very selective about whom they grant access. To enter
the island you need special permission from the
elders. The Watumbatu – inhabitants of Tumbatu -
are living as a very close, self- supporting community.
Many of them have never been on Unguja. You won’t
find cars or scooters there; Tumbatu has only one
road to walk on, even though this is the place where
in the 11th century the Shirazi built the first stone
building in the entire Zanzibar Archipelago!
RAS MSKITINI - learn about the Watumbatu life
Arriving at the beach of Ras Mskitini, you will see how the
Watumbatu prepare their fishing nets, fish traps and also
how they build and maintain their boats – all by hand! In a
short walk, you will arrive at the school of Ras Mskitini and
learn about who built the school and the importance of the
huge and old Baobab trees to the community. We will show
you the unspoken secrets of Tumbatu, as they are worldfamous
for witchcraft but also how the women create an
income through "Ukili" (plaiting palm leaves).
JONGOWE – learn about the Watumbatu life
The island has two places to discover in the south,
Jongowe and Kichangani. We visit the Jongowe ruins where
we witness one of Zanzibar's main early settlements. The
late medieval city was described in a chronicle known as
the "Tumbatu Manuscript". It inspired Dutch maritime
anthropologist and ethnohistorian A. H. J. Prins to visit the
island by dhow from Zanzibar. In June 1957, he identified
the ancient Shirazi port city's ruins.

TUMBATU – special information: The Tumbatu Island Day Trip is a very special excursion and only possible based on
the trust of the community’s elders. Therefore we have put together the following information and guidelines; please read
it carefully and follow it, for the benefit of all.
Please follow the rules and directions given by your guide and show respect to the Watumbatu at all times.
Photographs are only allowed after you get permission from our guide.
NOT allowed is beachwear or shoulder free T-shirts! It is best to wear wide, long trousers (will be provided for men in
the form of a gift to take back home) with a Polo Shirt or T-Shirt!
You have to wear a khanga (will be provided for ladies in the form of a gift to take back home) around your hip and for
women a scarf/ khanga to cover your hair!
Please note that you may have to walk knee-deep in the sea, while entering the boat or reaching the island, depending
on the tides. You need waterproof shoes and clothes which can be pulled up or get wet.
Sun protection and a hat/cap are really important.
During this excursion, we are not able to serve a regular lunch. We will provide lunch boxes, packed with seasonal

Stone Town's urban beach & heritage site hotels
Also known as Mji Mkongwe (Old City), the city has narrow
passageways that its residents used to share with donkeys, cows,
and chickens. Today the bustling, walk-friendly city still promotes
itself as the island’s commercial centre, where a cacophony of
merchants vying for your time and attention compete with
zipping motorcycles and bicycle bells. There’s more than just one
perfect day to be had in this grand yet quaint city, where there are
many opportunities for island hopping, ocean dipping, bazaar
shopping, and stargazing from vintage verandas or tearooms.
Sunsets in Zanzibar are revelatory, and everyone has their
ultimate spot for watching this divine daily gift, especially from
Stone Town's seafront. In the evening, “Foro” (Forodhani Park)
becomes a spontaneous fashion show, as Zanzibari youth show
off their best bling while others run around soaking wet after
taking running jumps to flip into the sea. Wander through the
nearby nightly food market to sample Zanzibar’s favourite street
foods.
West Coast - Chuini, Mbweni, Fumba
Zenji Hotel - Zanzibar Coffee House - Kholle House -
Jafferji House & Spa - Emerson on Hurumzi & Emerson
Spice - Kisiwa House - Zanzibar Serena -
Chuini beach is tucked away (from mass tourism). It’s always
quiet in the morning when women look for seafood but more
lively in the afternoon when locals exercise and enjoy themselves.
Swimming is possible except on full or new moon days when the
tide can be very low. Those days are ideal for long walks looking
for shells, hiding crabs and exploring the mangrove bays or
Chuini palace ruins.
- Mangrove Lodge - Chuini Zanzibar Beach Lodge -
Mbweni beach is only ten minutes away from Stone Town, the airport and the ferry terminal. The sandy beach among mangroves has
good views across the sea towards mainland Tanzania and great sunsets.
- Protea Mbweni Ruins Hotel - Chumbe Island Coral Park -
* Staying at Protea Mbweni Ruins Hotel is particularly convenient if you want to spend a night somewhere before or after a stay at
Chumbe Island Lodge, as the daily boat to Chumbe leaves from the hotel's jetty.
Fumba beach is partly sandy and partly dotted with rocks, located at the end of a long peninsula, about 15km south of Zanzibar
Town. There are few fishing boats and a spectacular view across Menai Bay - Zanzibar's largest marine protected area.
- Fumba Beach Lodge -
South Coast - Kizimkazi, Makunduchi
Kizimkazi is a small fishing village consisting of two adjoining settlements: Dimbani to the north and Mkunguni to the south. The
coastline here is very different from the classic palm-backed lagoon of the east coast. Here, a coral rag cliff elevates the
waterfront above the ocean and the beaches take the form of small coves rather than broad expanses of sand.
- Unguja Lodge - Mama Roots - Promised Land Lodge -
Makunduchi beach can be found at the far southeastern end of
Zanzibar Island. In the surrounding area are ancient shrines, coral
caves, a colonial lighthouse and reputedly the largest baobab tree
on the island.
- Ujamaa Beach Resort -
South East Coast - Jambiani, Paje, Bwejuu, Michamvi
Jambiani beach is miles of startling white sand - where men still bring in the early morning catch by dugout canoe and
children play soccer on the beach until the tide swallows up their playing field. Houses are constructed in the traditional way
with coral stone and thatch roofs and the locals still greet visitors with a friendly smile and gesture.
- Zanzistar Lodge - Joya' Beach Suites & Villa - Sharazad Boutique Hotel - Blue Oyster Hotel - Uzuri Villa -
Paje beach has long stretches of white sand, palm trees swaying in the breeze, turquoise waters. The beach here is well known
for its perfect kitesurfing conditions. At low tide, local women collect seaweed which is used in natural cosmetics, such as soaps,
scrubs or even juices. After sunset, the beach turns into a lively party spot, though the atmosphere remains relaxed.
- Kahawa Lofts -
Bwejuu beach is lined with palm trees and a popular choice for those seeking total relaxation, peace and privacy.
- Bellevue Guesthouse - Indigo Beach Zanzibar - Breezes Beach Club - Baraaza Resort & Spa -
Michamvi is at the tip of a peninsula which feels remote and has wonderful empty beaches to explore. On the eastern side of
the peninsula is Michamvi-Pingwe, with a vibrant coral lagoon and beautiful palm-fringed beaches set in a string of scenic coves
between high coral-rag cliffs. And on the western side is Michamvi-Kae, which faces west towards Chwaka Bay and from where
one can watch gorgeous sunsets.
- Milele Beach Resort - Jua Retreat - Upendo Beach Zanzibar - Matlai Boutique Hotel - Quambani Luxury Resort -
North East Coast - Pongwe, Matemwe, Muyuni
Pongwe beach is on a stunning private cove near a coral lagoon.
This is the picture-perfect beach as you sit upon your comfy beach
lounger on the white-powdery beach while looking out across the
turquoise ocean. If the midday sun gets too severe, the welcoming
shades of the palm trees will cool you while sipping on a fresh
coconut.
- Pongwe Beach Hotel - Seasons Lodge Zanzibar -
The idyllic Matemwe beach has some of the finest sand on the
island, and in the sleepy village life still moves at its own pace,
despite the hotels and guesthouses nearby. This endless beach has a
'local' atmosphere. For tourists, this tranquil unhurried ambience
means Matemwe is definitely a place to switch off.
- Hodi Hodi - Zanzibar Retreat Hotel - Sunshine Hotel - Maji Lodge - Villa Kiva Boutique Hotel -
From Muyuni beach one can enjoy stunning views of the Indian Ocean and Mnemba Island. It is also the perfect transfer point
for the short hop to Mnemba Atoll.
- Sunshine Marine Lodge -
North Coast - Nungwi, Kendwa, Fukuchani
Nungwi beach, once best known as a dhow-building centre, belongs to the large and lively fishing village of the same name
with bars, restaurants and nightlife where backpackers and locals mingle with five-star visitors. Nungwi's coastline is perfect for
swimming, snorkelling and diving in some of Africa's most pristine, reef-rich waters.
Kendwa beach stretches down the west coast about 3km south of the tip of Zanzibar Island. Not surprisingly, this idyllic
location means a string of resorts, hotels and guesthouses, but there is still lots of space on the beach. Other attractions include
a range of water-based activities and tides that ensure swimming all day.
- Kilindi Zanzibar - Zuri Zanzibar -
Fukuchani beach is an isolated and unique location, far from mass tourism, but close to Kendwa and Nungwi.
- Milele Villas -
Please be aware that along the East Coast, the waters inside the reef are shallow and therefore swimming is limited
during low tide. And please also note that topless sunbathing is not allowed anywhere in Zanzibar. We recommend
bringing a wrap to cover up if you are taking a walk or if villagers are nearby. The colourful khangas that the local
ladies wear are perfect for that!
T H E U N D I S C O V E R E D I S L A N D O F P E M B A
Take a trip off the beaten path and pay a visit to Pemba! Less frequently visited than its neighbour, Unguja, the
island of Pemba retains an air of unspoilt beauty, with lush green valleys of clove plantations and dark mysterious
tropical forest giving way to vast stretches of virgin beach at the coast.
Pemba lies around 60 km northeast of Unguja and is smaller than its sister island, stretching 67 km from north to south and 22
km from east to west, and at its highest point, rising to just 95 metres above sea level. Winding roads lead through the peaks and
valleys of the island’s terrain, revealing vivid mosaics of rice paddies, mangrove lined creeks and spice plantations.
Early Arab sailors, enchanted by Pemba’s lush, fertile landscape and palm-fringed beaches, named it Al Khudra, the ‘Green Isle’. At
night the wind that whispers through the clove plantations which cover most of Pemba might bring the sound of distant
drumming. But don’t be tempted to set off towards the noise – in the 1930’s Pemba was famous all over the world for the power of
its sorcerers and magicians, with devotees coming from as far away as Haiti to be initiated into the rites of Pemban sorcerers. By
all accounts, Pemba is still a centre of witchcraft today, but visitors will be unlikely to see any hint of the occult. Instead, you can
float across spectacular coral reefs, laze on those untouched beaches and explore the winding hills and dense vegetation of the
interior.
Pemba has three main towns; Chake Chake, the largest town and capital, is located about halfway along the west coast, the ferry
port of Mkoani in the south, and dhow harbour of Wete in the north. The small number of visitors to Pemba every year means that
the island has little in the way of tourist infrastructure – which for alternative travellers is the main attraction. Small guesthouses
are dotted around the island, and there are a couple of up-market diving hotels and resorts.
What to do in Pemba?
The DIVING and SNORKELING around Pemba Island is nothing else but breathtaking. The untouched coral reefs surrounding the
entire island make Pemba one of the top dive sites in the world. Pemba, Tanzania is the perfect place to start your dive adventure with
one of the healthiest coral reefs in the Indian Ocean, a water temperature averaging at 26ºC and the best visibility of East Africa of 30-
40 meters almost every day!
There are many historical sites to explore on Pemba, including a number of old mosques and tombs and the oldest surviving
building in Chake Chake, the Nanzim Fort.
About 20 km west of Chake Chake, Ras Mkumbuu is the site of Pemba's probably most important ruins- a settlement originating
in the Shirazi period and believed to date back about 1.200 years. The ruins include stone houses, pillar tombs and the remains of a
14th century mosque.
Misali Island, to the west of Pemba, is reputed to have been used as a hideout by the notorious pirate Captain Kidd, who is even said
to have buried treasure here. Today a conservation program has been established, and visitors can come for the day, snorkel off the
beach and walk in the forest.
Makangale, Pogwa, Sanaa, Masiwani and Kangani are situated in the northern part of Pemba, which is popular for its rubber
plantations, established from 1976.
The Ngezi Forest is a protected area in the northwest corner of the island. It is home to endemic flora and fauna species such as the
Pemba Flying Fox (a giant bat), Red Colobus Monkeys, Vervet Monkeys and a host of bird species including the much sought
after, endemic Pemba Scops Owl.
EMERALD BAY RESORT
- 4 days / 3 nights -
The Emerald Bay Resort is located in the valley of Chokocho village, in the south of Pemba Island. The Mkoani seaport is a
15-minute drive away and Chake Chake airport can be reached within 40 minutes by car. Facing a characteristic natural
port in a remote area surrounded by nature, the small boutique resort was built influenced by the style of Arabic architecture,
reminiscent of bygone days when traders and sailors were living on the island. It consists of 7 spacious self-contained rooms,
each with a private balcony or verandah with partial sea and garden views. The lounge bar, the main public area and the
terrace restaurant have a stunning view of the Emerald Bay. An array of day tours and activities can be enjoyed on-site or in
the surroundings, including hiking, snorkelling and fishing. The Emerald Bay Resort is ideal for couples, honeymooners and
seasoned travellers who want to enjoy the island and its nature in tranquillity and peace.

THE MANTA RESORT
- 6 days / 5 nights -
The Manta Resort is not a typical 5-star luxury resort and certainly different from what you might find on other tropical islands. If
you’re expecting bling bling bling you will be disappointed. If you, however, are looking for serenity, close encounters with nature
and a close-knit family of people, this is one of the best places to find yourself as far away from civilization than you have ever
found yourself before. Famed for its Underwater Room that allows guests to enjoy the marine life of the Indian Ocean from the
comfort of their bed. The resort has a total of 18 rooms (Seafront Villas, Superior Garden Rooms and Standard Garden Rooms),
and of course, the extraordinary underwater room. The room types vary in size, location and design. It is the perfect place to start
your dive adventure with one of the healthiest coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. We often find that the true value of the Manta
Resort's all-inclusive plan is not fully understood. This can be explained by highlighting the fact that guests will not pay for anything
on the property other than for diving, items from the curio shop and day tours on the island. The Fully Inclusive plan is REALLY All-
Inclusive and includes also ONE treatment per person / per day at the Kipepeo Spa.

Mafia Island is a true remnant of the old Swahili coast, a place unspoilt, unaffected by commercialism
and timeless. Local people go about their traditional activities seemingly detached from the outside
world. The main activity is fishing which is combined with the cultivation of staple foods and weaving of
mats and baskets. Moderate Islamic religion dominates the Island. Mafia is the largest of a small
archipelago of islands with a population of about 40,000. It is approximately 20 miles off the Tanzanian
coast, about 35 minutes by air from Dar es Salaam. Across from the island lies the Great Rufiji River
delta and the world-famous Selous Game Reserve. The name Mafia is probably derived from the Arabic
“morfiyeh”, meaning “group” or “archipelago”, or from the Swahili “mahali pa afya” meaning “a healthy
dwelling place”. Its history goes back to the 8th century, where it played a key role in the East African
trading routes between Kilwa and Zanzibar. According to a legend, in the early 19th century, the Shirazi
town of Kua and Juani Island were ransacked by a group of cannibals from Madagascar, who ate many
of the local people and abducted the rest for slavery. In more modern times it was the base used by
British forces in the First World War, crucial for locating the German battleship Königsberg. Today it’s
known for its spectacular and peaceful natural environment. Mafia has mostly escaped the invasion of
mass tourism, with only a handful of lodges on the island.
The lodges are like quiet “bush resorts”, thus offering the perfect alternative safari experience. Major
tourist activities are scuba diving, snorkelling, beach and offshore island excursions. The places to visit
are: Chole Bay, Kinasi Pass Islets, Mange Reef, Kitutia, and Jibondo Pass. Diving safaris around Chole
Bay, within Mafia Island’s Marine Park are outstanding. This is one of the highest bio-diversity marine
sites in East Africa! There are over 400 species of fish, 48 genera of soft and hard coral, the endangered
marine turtle, dolphins and the rare dugong. Chole Bay, the core of the Marine Park, also provides a
rare alternative destination when the monsoon produces particularly windy days and the ocean is raging
beyond the reef at other Tanzanian diving destinations. There are a handful of genuinely world-class
dive sites, and you can be assured of never diving in a crowd. Ideal for nature lovers, this is a real
paradise with a rich variety of vegetation, combining a mixture of bush with baobabs, mangroves and
dream sandbanks. There are wild pigs, duikers, monkeys, small antelopes, hippos and nocturnal
creatures such as bushbabies and the fruit bat (flying fox). Fish eagles and countless other wading and
wetland birds frequent the shoreline. It’s a wonderful destination to round off a wilderness safari or
simply put your feet up and unwind!
THE BUTIAMA BEACH
4 daus / 3 nights
Butiama Beach is situated on the west coast of Mafia Island (about 10 minutes drive from the airport), close to the main
town of Kilindoni and outside of the Marine Park boundaries. With only 13 bungalows and a maximum occupancy of 32
people, it is the perfect, casual beachfront retreat to relax and unwind. Each bungalow is beautifully furnished with unique
furniture – handcrafted from the sun and sea-kissed hardwoods of retired sailing dhows and decorated with kikois –
charming, colourful handwoven cotton sarongs. There's no air conditioning in the rooms, but a ceiling fan provides a breeze.
Days start in the thatched, open-sided dining area with a fabulous breakfast. At lunch, choose something light at the wavelapped
Chiringuito beach bar & restaurant. Three-course dinners are served in the main dining area or by lamplight on the
beach. There's a large communal seating area with deep-cushioned sofas where one can use the WiFi. Explore the beachfront
and mangroves in a kayak; sail to nearby islands and sandbanks in a dhow; snorkel the reef to see its multi-hued corals,
460-plus species of fish and various species of turtles; scuba dive, go fishing or swim with the world’s largest fish - the whale
shark; or look for the resident animals and birdlife during a land excursion. Return to a massage and a sunset view.
There's a supplement of US$ 20 per person / per night when staying during the high season from 1st to 31st August and from &
from 20th December to 10th January / children 0-3 years old are free of charge / ask for a quote for 4-12 years old children when

service and air conditioning. This is simply one of the most unusual and special places that we know!"
POLE POLE LUXURY ECO-LODGE
4 days / 3 nights
Pole Pole is Kiswahili for ‘slowly’ or 'take it easy'', and this perfectly describes the atmosphere of this beautiful retreat. The lodge can be

tropical garden, and has spectacular views of the Mafia Archipelago and the Indian Ocean. Seven Bungalow Suites are subtly blended into
the surrounding tropical landscape of Pole Pole. Their private verandas overlook Chole Bay’s infinite palette of blues, at the heart of the

antique pieces. The large private verandas are provided with handcrafted wooden furniture. Each unit is self-contained with a spacious and
comfortable bathroom. Two bungalows are ‘family’ type, with two rooms separated by the bathroom and a small corridor for privacy. The

Covering an area of around 50,000 sq.km, the Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest protected wildlife areas
in the world. The reserve contains a wide variety of wildlife habitats, which include open grasslands, acacia and
miombo woodlands, riverine forests, and swamps.
The River Rufiji is the main feature in the Selous Game Reserve, with main tributaries twisting and turning across
the flood plains as the river runs towards the Indian Ocean. The river's delta contains the largest mangrove forest
in the world. Boat Safaris on the river and on the adjacent lakes are a special way to observe wildlife and to see
some of the best scenery in the reserve. Hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks, buffaloes, and a large variety of water
birds such as herons, kingfishers, and geese are abundant in and around the river.
Game drives are also attractive, especially along the shores of the lakes and the rivers. Evening drives provide a

The Serengeti is home to one of nature’s greatest and largest animal migrations. More than 1.5 million white bearded
wildebeest and 250,000 zebras take part in the 1000 km journey in search of greener pastures. During their trek towards the
rich grazing grounds they must overcome the most dangerous obstacle on the journey, the Mara River, famous for its huge
prehistoric reptile, the crocodile.
Apart from the annual migration the Serengeti is also home to the “big five” – lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard and it
is claimed that the Serengeti has the highest population of lions anywhere in Africa. Leopards are frequently spotted relaxing
while large herds of elephants and buffaloes graze on the savannah. Although the park is also home to very few black rhinos,
they are rarely ever seen as they tend to hide in the more bushy areas of the park. But it is not only mammals that reside here
and over 500 species of birds including ostriches, secretary birds, different types of vultures and eagles, Egyptian geese, black
headed herons, crowned cranes, Kori bustards and many more can also be found in the Serengeti National Park.
ITINERARY
DAY 1
Depart at 7.45 am from Zanzibar airport to Serengeti / Seronera airstrip. On arrival (at around 11 am) you will be
welcomed by a professional guide with 4x4 safari vehicle adapted for game viewing to start a game drive in the
park with picnic lunch. Late in the afternoon you will arrive at Kati Kati Tented Camp. The camp is in a secluded
area, in the heart of the bush and the stars at night are breathtaking.
DAY 2
Following breakfast, you will spend the whole day on a game drive in the Serengeti National Park and have lunch
at a picnic spot en-route. Depending upon the time of year, you will witness the great migration with hundred
thousands of wildebeests, zebras and Thompson gazelles. Your guide will try his upmost to find the animals and
will make sure that you can see the animals from the best spot in the national park. Naturally, the migration also
attracts predators and with luck you might see a kill in action. You will spend another night at Kati Kati Tented
Camp.
DAY 3
After breakfast at daybreak, you will start your outward journey from the Serengeti early to depart from Seronera
airstrip at 11.30 am and arrive in Zanzibar at 2 pm.
ATTENTION
Please note, should you travel between the beginning of January and mid-March, you will stay at the Kati Kati Ndutu
Tented Camp. This camp is also situated in the Serengeti National Park but closer to the border of the Ngorongoro
Conservation Area in the Ndutu Area. Staying at a camp in the Ndutu Area during this time increases your chances
of seeing the famous migration as the herds can either be on the Serengeti or Ngorongoro side.
