Pilot Lachlan spreadswings
MICK.JENSEN
@ashburtoncourier.co.nz
Lachlan Kingan is on the next leg of
his flying journey and is off to flight
schoolinNelson in February.
He’sjust completed his schooling
at Ashburton College and will
continue his dream of becoming a
commercialairline pilot.
Thatdream started as ayoung boy
and began in earnest when he went
on his first trialflightasan11yearold.
At 16, Lachlan took his first solo
flight and at the same age obtained
his microlight licence, which enables
him to fly with one passenger.
So far he has clockeduparound130
flying hours in amicrolight and GA
aircraft, muchofitsolo.
Overthe last few years aparttime
job at Rural Transport has helped
fund his flying lessons.
Lachlan said he enjoyedtaking
friendsand familyout in the
microlight.
Two years ago he tookhis then
100yearold great grandmother Jean
out for aspin in asnug fourseater
Piper Archer, which she had
absolutely loved, despite the
turbulence.
Lachlan said he had been accepted
to flight school in October and was
lookingforward to the adventure
ahead.
He planned to live on site at
Motueka for the first six months,
where he would do much of his
training, and thenplanned to flat.
His aim was to complete the
commercialpilot’s course by October
and then to work his way up the flying
ladder.
‘‘Theaim is to tick off my
LachlanKingan at Ashburton Airfield ahead of atwohoursolo flight he took
last week.
instrument rating, whichincludes a
nightrating, and then just to keep
going.’’
Over the next two to twoandahalf
years his radarwas set on obtaining
diplomas in general aviation, airline
preparation and flight instruments.
Motuekaairfield is similartothe
one in Ashburton, and has no
controlled space, but has tarmac.
Lachlan will be just 30 minutes
flyingtime to Wellington, and his
training will likely take him as far
north as Mt Taranaki and south to
Milford Sound.
‘‘I’m looking forward to all the hard
work and trainingpaying off and
getting paid to fly for aliving,’’ he
said.
His first paid job could well be as a
instructor, but his dream remained to
fly big planes as acommercialairline
pilot.
Joining Lachlan on the commercial
flying course at Nelson Aviation
College next year will be fellow
Ashburton College student Ethan
Walsh.
Festive farewell ... until 2021
3
Welcome to our final edition of
the Courier for 2020. It’s beena
crazy year of covidrelated news
but we haven’t let that stop us
telling your otherstories over the
past 12 months.
In fact, that’s been astrong
theme of this year. While covid
has had abig impact on the way
we live and work, the peopleof
Ashburton district have tried to
box on as normally as possible
and still gotalot done.
We were queuing at the
supermarket back in March. We
werewalking and biking,
remembering to keep our
distance from others, the
following month. We worked from
homethank you, IT.
So we can change, and change
quickly, when we need to. And
that is good to know.
Our first edition of 2021 will be
in your letterboxes on January 14.
Helpers line up for Methven walkway
LINDA.CLARKE
@ashburtoncourier.co.nz
MethvenLions are literally
movingmountains to bring a
50year planfor awalking track
encircling Methven.
Club spokesman Peter Garde
said acircular track around
Methvenwas planned during
the 1960s,but the project never
realised its full potential. Now
the Lions areonboard with
energy, manpower and funding
to get the job done.
Peter said parts of the track
already in use were popular.
‘‘You should have seen it in
lockdown, it was like Queen
Street.’’
There are three stages to the
track, which will encircle
Methvenwhen complete. The
first looptakesinthe Methven
racecourse andRDR andis
nearly complete. The second
loops through the town’s
cemetery andshowgrounds
while the third takesin
PuddingHill Road andthe golf
club.
Peter said completing the
project would take three years
and the end result would be
great for locals as well as
visitors to the area. The tracks
are for all to enjoy.
The Lions have extended a
track along Mt Harding Road
that was part of the
Thymestream subdivision to
create a60minute loop. The
Peter Garde on part of the walkway being developed by MethvenLions.
track is limechip on aclay
base, ideal for walkers, runners
andbikers.
Peter said it was alsosuitable
for wheelchairs and mobility
scooters. Signs andmaps would
be putupand the route would
have multipleexits and entries,
to suit all abilities and users.
He said Lions members had
been working on partsofthe
first trackfor the past couple of
years anddecided to takeon
the whole project to bring it to
fruition.
Members had begged and
borrowed equipment, and
tapped shoulders for material
donations. They were not
turned down.
Peter saidthe club had spent
about $16,000 on the track so
far, about aquarter of thecost if
it had been developedbya
contractor.
He saidthe walkway project
had developed alife of its own
and now had adedicated Lions
subcommittee. Others on the
group includedBruce Sim,
Paul Dixon, RonSmith, Kelvin
Holmes and Mac McElwain.
The wellconnected group
has had help from John Harmer
and Methven Trucking, using
donated rock to firm up the
sides of Mt Harding creek.The
creek sides will soonbeplanted
with native grasses as part of
their ongoing beautification
work.
Peter said the walkway, when
fully developed, would create
an 11km loop. He hopes it will
be alegacy project thatwill be
well used by locals and visitors,
during all seasons.
Peter and fellow Lion Mr
McElwain took their master
plan to the Ashburton District
Council’s biodiversity
committee recently and came
away withmore offersofhelp
and thousands of free native
grasses, thanks to Synlait.
The milk processor is
creating its own nursery of
native plants andgrassesfor a
programme to help its farmers
improve biodiversity on their
properties.
Environment Canterbury has
already given about900 plants
to plant alongside Mt Harding
Creek.
Peter said the project would
improve the health of the
waterway and improve
biodiversity in the area.
Thousands of endangered
blackbilled gulls that usually
Sharemilkers Ali Van
said the birds were first
noticed on November 14.
They wereweaningcalves
when they noticed the first
group, Alisaid.
Butwithin afew days there
weremore.
They have taken to an old
gravel pile and somescrappy
grass. There are shallow pools
the birds are thrivingin.
‘‘It’s what they like,’’ Ali said.
Ali said the main nesting
area had the birds in various
ages.
‘‘Wehavealotoftarapuka
and chicks at different stages
of growth,’’ shesaid.
However there were juvenile
birds in clusters offtothe side
The couple, along with
Big pipe hides in bowels of river
LINDA.CLARKE
Relocatingfish and working
aroundendangered birds have
beenunique challengesfor
workers constructing acrucial
new wastewater pipelineunder
the Ashburton River.
The$7.7million pipeline
projectwas officially opened
on Monday and contractors
Seipp willbestaying on to lay
another sewer pipethatwill
take wastewater from
Ashburtoneast to thenew river
crossing.
Theprojects have a
combined pricetagofnearly
$16m and are designed to cope
with the growth of Ashburton
town for at least another 50
years.
Flush atoilet in Ashburton
and the wastewater goes
through pipes to the side of the
river nearMilton Road. Seipp
has constructed anew pipeline
deepunder the riverbed to near
the Ashburton District
Council’s treatmentplant at
WilkinsRoad.
It replacesanold siphon that
ran under the river, parts of
which were in poorcondition.
Theriver pipe runsataslight
gradient and on the Tinwald
side anew pumping station was
built to pump it to the treatment
ponds at the plant. From there
it is piped 11km to OceanFarm,
where it is filtered by wetlands
and irrigated onto farm land.
An electronic smart brain in
the pumping stationkeeps an
eye on wastewater levels in two
wet wells and triggers four
pumps on rotationto pumpit
on. The station is powered by
electricity, with generator
backup, so even if the power is
out, the wastewatercan keep
moving.
Theriver pipe and pump
station has beenamajor
Ram. He hasbeen giving
regular updates to councillors
during thelife of the project.
He moved from Auckland
beensupervising the work.He
has usheredthe projectinon
helped relocate fish whenthe
bulldozersneeded to change
the flow of the riverand laid
eyes on thousands of pages of
engineering and contracting
Site manager Mitch Arnold (left) and project manager Shyamal Ram at the new pumping station.
Don’t forget all this happened
during uncertain times around
Covid19.
MitchArnold has beenin
charge of Seippcrews from
Christchurchtravellingtowork
on theproject. He haslearned a
lot about thecomplicated
nature of braided rivers and
endangered birds, such as the
blackbilled gull and blackfrontedterns.
Hiscrew installedsheet piles
to temporarily divert water
under the ground so the 1m
diameter pipecouldbelaid.
The new pumpingstation is
now fencedfor security and
fruit trees have been planted
aroundthe perimeter.
While Ashburton mayorNeil
Brownofficially turned aknob
to start oneofthe pumps, the
station has actuallybeen
operatingfor about amonth
duringthe rigorous testing
phase.
Mr Brown said it had been a
great project for council and
one that wouldfutureproof the
town andits growing
population for decades to come.
Workonthe new Netherby
sewer will begin in the new
yearand should be completeby
March 2022.
About 40 invitedguests,
including councillors, council
staff, engineers and
contractors,attended the
TheLakeHoodriver trail
that runs alongside the new
pumping stationwill be open on
Christmas Evetobikers and
walkers; thatsection has been
shut while contractors worked.
The pipe is laid underground at this part of the Ashburton River.
The pump station is visible on the Tinwald side.
Mr Moffat saidthat with the
the openingofthe Opuke thermal
to catch Australians keen for
international travel.
Therehad alsobeen achange of
thinking in domestic tourists,who
enjoyed the chance to ski as families
on Mt Hutt thisyear instead of being
able to holidayinthe Pacific Islands,
he said.
While tourism spend is downinMid
Canterburybecause of the pandemic,
the district is still performing well
againstother areas. Mr Moffatsaid
good forward bookings had been
reported and the mood waspositive
amongoperators for the summer.
‘‘Weshould seeasolid increase in
The Mid Canterbury Tourism
for the second time lastmonth and had
aplan in place for border opening and
Work continues on Methven’s Opuke Thermal Pools, which could open in time
for the July school holidays.
Mr Moffatsaid local operators were
abletosurvive on the domestic
market, which was 17.4 per cent down.
Nearly 90 per cent of tourism in the
district is domestic, withthe average
spend pertourist $170 aday.
Providing atourism updateto
AshburtonDistrict Councillors
recently, he said $243,000had cometo
the district for event funding.
This was to promote big, existing
market; there was astrategic
emphasis on encouraging people
coming to theseevents to stay
overnight.
The district’s cows are producing some of the nation’s highest milking litre averages per herd.
Ashburton district has
high milking performers
The Ashburton district has
cowsproducing some of the
highestmilking litre averages
perherd in thecountry.
The 414 dairy herds in the
area, madeupof364,384 cows
with an average of 880per herd,
produced an average 4,315,412
litres perherd in the 20192020
season, according to latest New
Zealand Dairy Statistics report
released last week.
They were toppedin
production by herds in the
Mackenzie District who
produced an average 4,343,974
litres perherd.
In Ashburtondistrict there
were 224 owneroperators, 63
contract milkersand 127
sharemilkers in the district.
Overallthe New Zealand
dairy sector, with 4.921 million
milking cows, hashad another
record yearwith total
milksolids productionata
record high.
The DairyNZand Livestock
ImprovementCorporation
(LIC) statistics show that in the
201920 season, dairy
companies processed 21.1
billion litres of milk containing
1.90 billionkilograms of
milksolids (kg MS).Ashburton
district produced on average
1566kgofmilksolids per
effective hectare.The national
figure was up 0.6percentin
milksolidsfrom the previous
season.
Theaverage milk production
nationwideper cowalso
increasedfrom 381kgMSlast
season to 385 kg MS this season,
despite the latest count
showing NewZealand had
fewer cows; peak cownumbers
in 2014/15,were at over five
million.
DairyNZ chief executive Dr
TimMacklesaid record
milksolidsproduction per cow
wasachieved despite cow
numbers continuing to remain
relatively stable, as farmers
placed more focus on cow
productivity and
environmental efficiency.
“The commitmentbyour
farmers to improve the quality
of their herdstodrivebetter
productivity and sustainability
outcomes is goodnews,” Dr
Macklesaid.
“While some of our key
sectors have beenhit hard by
Covid19, our dairy sector has
proven extremelyresilient
through this period of
uncertainty andiswellpositionedtocontinueplaying
akey role in contributing to
NewZealand’s economy.The
dairy sector directly employs
50,000 people and earns New
Zealand roughly $20 billionin
exports per year. Thesuccess of
our dairyfarmers is extremely
importanttoevery Kiwi andhas
real benefits for NewZealand.”
The dairy cowcensusalso
showed NewZealand dairy
farmers were continuingto
draw on arange of tools to
ensure their cows were yearonyear
more efficient at
converting grass into milk. The
number of cows herd tested was
the highest on record this year,
withatotalof3.689 million
cows herd tested –equating to
75 per cent of all cows.
LIC chief executive Wayne
McNee said the focus on cow
quality wasevident in the
increasing uptakeofherd
improvementservices.
“Herd testing enables
farmers to collect information
about individual cows in their
herds,and to monitor cow
performance and wellbeing so
they can make informed,
effective herd management
decisions on farm.”
Active adult supervisionisthe only way to keep babiesand toddlers safearound water.
Water safety message
Never beforehave New
Zealandersbeenmore in need
of water safetyawareness. As
Water Safety New Zealand was
spreadingwatersafety
messages in their annual
campaignfor summer,six
people drowned in preventable
incidents.
Water Safety NewZealand
chiefexecutive officerJonty
Millssaid it wasatragic
reminder of how many New
Zealanderswere needlessly
losing theirliveswhilein, on
andaround the water.
“When we say “preventable”,
it means awatersafety
interventioncould have
prevented thefatality. Maybeit
wasoverconfidence,a
knowledge or skilldeficit, or a
baddecisionKiwis need to
takemore personal
responsibility and respect the
water,” MrMillssaid.
‘‘Everyfatalityleaves a
devastated familyand
community behind,” he said.
‘‘It’s alsoareminder of what we
arepotentially facing this
summer.Increased numbers of
NewZealanders heading to our
waterways after areally
challenging year. Onebad
decision, one moment of over
confidence or inattentioncan be
fatal.”
The deathswereone person
aged 04,one aged2534, two
aged 45 –54andtwoaged
65plus.
Mr Mills said over the past
threeyears there hadbeena
growingnumberofolder New
Zealanders losing their lives in
thewater.
Preventable fatalities in the
55 –64year old age group
increasedto13in2019
compared to seven in 2018, and
the65plus agebracket had the
highestnumberoffatalities
over 2018 (17)and 2019(15).
“Kiwisarestayingactive
longer and perhapsnot making
thenecessary adjustmentsor
possibly ignoring the need to
usealittle more caution.”
Of the fourover45year old
fatalities,two wereswimmers,
onewas free diving and one was
in apowered boat.
“New Zealand’sdrowning
problem is not one dimensional.
The annualdrowningtoll
represents awide range of
age,ethnicities,activities
and water environments,”
Mr Mills said.
Thisyear, despitethe
Covid19 lockdown at the
end of lastsummer,54
people have died in the
water in preventable
incidents, andthe year is not
overyet.In2019there were
82 preventable drowning
fatalities.
“It’s so important people
follow the correct safety
guidelines for the aquatic
activity they are undertaking
and rememberthe Water
Safety CodeBe prepared,
watch out foryourself and
eachother, be aware of the
dangers andknow your
limits.”
MrMillssaidparents and
caregivers also needed to
takeresponsibility for
babies and toddlers around
water.“Constantactiveadult
supervision is the onlyway
to keep them safe. Any body
of waterposes ahazard. It
takes less thanaminute fora
child to drown.”
Water, sun safe
Outdoor fun extends to being
sun safe whileout in the water.
Skin canceristhe most
commoncancer in New
Zealand.
Around 500 New Zealanders
die of it everyyear.
So water safety includes
slippingonatee shirt, slopping
on sun screen, slapping on ahat
and wrappingyoureyesin
sunglasses.
Thecause is mostly too much
ultraviolet (UV)radiation from
sunlightorsunbeds. Evenwhen
thereisnosunburn, UV
radiation (UVR) cancause
damage to yourskin.This
damage adds up over the years.
UVRcan also permanently
damage eyes.
Specsavers Ashburton
optometristDouglasMullan
said it was important people
knew of the potential longterm
damage and how toprevent it.
Living in New Zealand
meant we were exposed to
dangerous levels of UV
radiation when outside, even
when it’s not bright and sunny,
he said.
“The skin around our eyes is
very thin and contains fragile
tissues that can easily be
damaged by UV light. UV
damage to theeye and eyelid
increases risk of serious
conditions suchaseyelid skin
cancers,intraocular
melanoma,conjunctival
cancers,cataracts, macular
degeneration andmore,” he
said.
Symptoms of damage can
include redness, blurry vision,
swelling, light sensitivity,
seeing halos and tears.
The same way youput on
sunscreen andahattoprotect
your body, you should ensure
you are wearingsunglasses
that block out UV, regardless of
whether it was sunny or not.
He recommended sunglasses
Mayor's Comment-Neil Brown
Who could haveimaginedthis time
last year what we were about to
walk into?It’smorethan likely that
if anyone had shown us their 2020
crystal ball that we wouldn’t have
believed them, but here we are
almostonthe other sideand ready
to step intoanew year.
The events of 2020 havebeen nothing
short of extraordinary but Ibelieve
we havearrived at the end with some
Awordfromthe Methven
Community Board
Dan McLaughlin,Chairperson
Well, that ayear it’s been –both globally
and hereinour ownbackyard! Despitethe
challenges we’veall faced, Mid Canterbury
has achieved quite alot and things have
reallybeen progressing well forMethven.
We were really pleased to have speed
limits come under the spotlight this
year as part of the Council’s Speed Limit
Review. Anumber of our roads around
town simply no longer had the right speed
forthe amount of traffic and development
we’vebeen experiencing in the last couple
of years.
It’sgreat to see the newspeedlimit signs
havegone up this last month and I’m sure
important takeaways: we’re alittle
moreresilient,alittleless caught up in
the small stuff, and far more grateful
forthe things we do haverather than
resentful of what we don’t.
Iamsoproud of what our community
achieved this year when COVID
arrived on our shores. We banded
together and worked as ateam to
stop the spread. Now, we arecarrying
With holidays and time away with
friends and family on the agenda
for many, Iwant to impress upon
everyone howimportant it is that we
keep up the efforts that havesteered
us through these rough waters so far.
Please use the COVID-19 NZ Tracer
app wherever you go. Pandemics
don’t knowthat it’sthe holidaysand
they certainly don’t care that we’re
just trying to relax, so stay vigilantby
they’ll play animportant part in helping
to keep residents safeonand around the
road.
The Methven Walkway additions and
improvements have continued to be an
important project for the town. Together
with the Methven Lions, we’ve been
makinggood progress especiallyinthese
last three years, and it’s proving to be a
greatassetfor the community.
It’s been along process but we hope to
haveall of the sections finished in the next
fewyears.
This year, we also made some great
improvements to the Methven Cemetery,
with arow of pine trees removed, anew
boundaryfenceinstalled and $4000 worth
of newplantings made at the entranceway
-it'scertainly lookingmuch tidier!
Thank you to everyone we've been
working with this past year to continue
improving Methven. There are alot of
great volunteers and groups who do so
much forthe town and your contributions
arereally appreciated.
On behalf of the Board, Ihope youhavea
Early hard yards for Spartans
Mid Canterbury schoolboys
hoping to be part of the
Spartans first XV rugby team in
2021 are already putting in the
hard yards.
In atraining just days before
Christmas, about 25 lads
assembled at the Ashburton
College for abit of fitness, some
passing drills and games.
Coach Shane Enright said
staying active over the summer
holidays would make life easier
when training for the new
season kicked on at the end of
January.
The Spartans are amix of
Ashburton College and Mt Hutt
College players and Enright
said there were good numbers
early, which was promising.
The early trainings helped
introduce new players to the
squad, which had anumber
returning from 2020.
They have been lucky to tap
into the resources of Tongan
and former Highlanders loose
forward Nasi Manu, who is in
Ashburton at the moment.
Enright said Manu had been
making himself available to run
and be part of physical
sessions, but he had also been
talking to the players about his
own experience with schoolboy
rugby.
He played for Christchurch
Boys High School, playing
alongside All Blacks Matt Todd,
Colin Slade and Owen Franks.
He was playing for the
Crusaders at the age of 19.
He moved south to play for
the Highlanders, then headed
overseas, to play in Scotland
and then Italy.
Covid19 bought him and his
young family back to New
Zealand and he turned out for
First XV players under
instruction from coach Shane
Enright.
Otago in the latter part of the
2020 season.
Enright said it had been good
for his players to make a
connection with Manu and for
them to hear how he managed
school, work and lots of rugby
training.
Manu played for Tonga in the
2019 Rugby World Cup in
Japan, after recovering from
testicular cancer diagnosed
while he was playing for
Treviso, in Italy, the year
before.
Vegetables
At this busy time of year, routine
maintenance in the garden can be at
the bottom of the list. But try to set
aside afew minutes every fine day to
hoe around all crops, except
strawberries.
Hoeing promotes air circulation,
preventing the ground becoming
hard and less able to take in water
when it rains.
Peas, lettuce, radish, turnips,
kohlrabi, mustard and cress, spinach
and carrots can still be sown, while
cabbage, cauliflower, leeks and
celery can be planted in wellmanured
soil.
Peas and runner and other
climbing beans already growing
should be staked.
Swedes may still be sown in
districts with along autumn growing
season.
Add equal parts of blood and bone
and superphosphate to the soil, and
work it into the top 15cm, before
sowing seeds in drills 1cm deep and
40cm apart.
Speed germination by covering
with sacks or planks until seedlings
appear.
Fruit
Blackcurrants, once harvested,
should have branches that have
fruited for acouple of seasons
removed. That will encourage strong
growth from the base of next season’s
fruiting branches.
Red and white currants can have
young shoots, except leaders,
shortened to about 10cm long. Do this
as the fruit starts to colour.
The centres of gooseberry bushes
should be kept open, so remove
growths crossing each other. New
shoots straggling along the ground
will be useless for fruiting, so cut
them to an outward facing bud.
Prune as soon as the crop has been
gathered; or prune as you pick.
Flowers
Roses are at their best this month,
but care should be taken to remove
any malformed buds and faded
flowers. Cut rose blooms in the early
morning or late in the evening and
they will last longer.
Mulching material will help
conserve moisture in the soil and
gradually rot down into plant food.
Use garden compost, spent hops if
available, lawn clippings or leaf
mould. Spread it evenly, no more
than 10cm thick, and keep it away
from plant stems.
Marigolds, asters, zinnias and
cosmos can still be planted out.
Hollyhock seed can be sown now to
produce strong plants for setting out
in April or May to flower next
summer. Ideal against dry, sunny
walls, once established, these hardy
perennials need little water.
Fuchsias stop flowering if the roots
become dry.
Mulching is beneficial and liquid
manuring, with asprinkling of blood
and bone, is good.
Dead flowers and seed heads can
be removed from all shrubs and longflowering
annuals, such as
rhododendrons, azaleas, roses, sweet
peas, asters, dahlias, pansies, violas,
carnations and pinks and Iceland
poppies.
Hydrangea cuttings can be taken
now from nonflowering shoots.
Remove all but the top two pairs of
leaves and trim with asharp knife,
immediately below aleaf joint.
Insert in apot of sandy soil and
keep moist and shaded until rooting
takes place.
Plant in rich soil in the open
garden, or put into acontainer to
grow as apot plant.
Cut rose blooms in the early morning or late in the evening and they
will last longer.
Myrtle rust watch in festive season gardening
While gardening over the
myrtle rust.
Myrtle rust, adiseasecaused
commonthroughout the North
Island and alsocalled the New
ZealandChristmas tree, and
kanuka,common in the South
Island with white flowers that
resemble snow, are both
myrtles.
The disease first appearson
myrtle plantsasblotches of
yellowdust on the leaves and
stems. Spores are tinyand very
easy to distribute by touchand
evenbywind.Its ability to
attack manydifferentspecies of
myrtle plantsand its ability to
spread so easily means thatthe
diseaseisalreadypresent in
many areas of theNorth Island
and in some parts of theSouth
Island.
You may or may nothave
native myrtles inyour garden,
but nonnative,common garden
myrtles can alsoget infected.
Nonnative myrtles include
eucalypts,bottlebrush, guavas
andmonkey apples or lilly
pilly, acommonhedge species.
When nonnatives areinfected,
thespore loadbuildsup,
increasingthe threat to other
myrtles, as the spores are easily
spread by wind.
What can gardeners do to
make suretheirgardens are
protected from disease? The
