Homicide victim was set to appear in court
• By Anna Leask
and Kurt Bayer
A MAN killed at an east
Christchurch property on
Sunday was to have appeared
in court yesterday on charges of
assaulting police, wilful damage
and resisting arrest.
But in a twist, his alleged killer
was in the dock instead – and
faced abuse from the dead man’s
family.
Michael Joseph Graham, 57,
died at a house on England St,
Linwood, on Sunday.
Emergency services were
called at 2.50pm. When they arrived
he was dead.
The active charges he was facing
were withdrawn yesterday
morning. Soon after, the man
charged with murdering him appeared
in the same court.
Nathan Te Hana, 46, was arrested
on Tuesday night.
Court documents reveal he
lived at the same property as
Graham.
The property is made up of
three Housing New Zealand
homes – and it is unclear whether
Te Hana lived with Graham or
was an immediate neighbour.
Yesterday police released Te
Hana’s name and photograph,
appealing to the public for help
to find him as they wanted to
speak with him about the alleged
murder. Yesterday, as Te Hana
was brought into the dock, Graham’s
son shouted abuse.
He was asked to leave the
courtroom and was escorted out
Thursday January 7 2021 The Star
by security staff.
A duty lawyer asked for name
suppression on the grounds that
Te Hana wanted to tell his family
directly of his plight.
Judge Stephen O’Driscoll
declined name suppression and
remanded Te Hana in custody
without plea to the High Court
in Christchurch on February 4.
False alarms keep
city firefighters busy
• By Matt Slaughter
CHRISTCHURCH firefighters
attended 6236 false alarm
incidents between 2018 and 2020.
A false alarm is a call where
there was no fire or other emergency
requiring intervention to
prevent injury, death or loss of
property.
Fire and Emergency New
Zealand attends more than
20,000 false alarm calls every
year nationwide,
which
can amount
to about 50 to
70 per cent of
all call-outs at
some fire stations.
The number
of false alarm
call-outs in
Bruce Irvine
Christchurch was 2296 in 2018
and 2407 in 2019. This number
decreased to 1533 last year.
Of these, 196 were deemed
malicious incidents where
alarms were activated deliberately
in spite of there being no
real fire or other emergency.
Of the false alarms since 2018,
1412 were found to be made in
good intent. Other reasons for
these call-outs ranged from accidental
alarm activations (1867)
and faulty alarms (2147). Two
hundred and fifty three false
alarm causes were undetermined.
A fire service call-out used to
cost Fire and Emergency New
Zealand about $1250 to attend
and a percentage of this amount
was reclaimed in fines.
Senior fire risk management
officer Bruce Irvine said this is
not the case anymore and punishment
or further action is only
considered when false alarms are
continually made by a person,
business or other party.
“We used to have the ability
under the New Zealand Fire
Service Act to be able to charge
for false alarms. We don’t now.
“What we now do is work with
the occupant and if they refuse
to do anything, then what we
can do is, in some circumstances,
disconnect the fire alarm
from Fire and Emergency New
Zealand, which then means that
their building can’t be occupied
for the use that it is designed
for,’’ Irvine said.
However, he said people
should always phone 111 when
they suspect there is a fire or
enough resources to attend calls
even when they turn out to be
false alarms.
“We don’t have an issue with
that, we prefer them to do that.
Especially a smell of smoke or a
smell of concern in an electrical
appliance, we will send a crew
and they’ll investigate it and
more often than not, there’s no
big blaze but we’ve just got to
identify the part that’s failing
and prevent the fire in the first
place.”
The owner of numerous liquor
Canterbury has been fined
$125,000 for employment law
Harjit Singh and his business,
Nekita Enterprises Ltd, have
been fined by the Employment
Relations Authority after it was
discovered Singh’s business was
operating a dual payroll system,
which paid some employees less
than minimum wage. Singh
operated various liquor stores
including 10 Super Liquor
Alcohol addiction leads to death – Millie’s
DEVOTED: Corina and Graeme Spinks with Millie, Coco
and Dolce (front).
• By Chris Barclay
MILLIE SPINKS’ middle name
‘Matewai’ translates, according
to mum, to ‘mighty thirst’ as she
dabbed at her eyes. Dad, head
bowed, lamented the irony.
Graeme Spinks and Corina
Grennell are in the lounge of
their Mairehau home, sat either
side of the couch where Millie
would routinely pass out during
an afternoon, once she had finished,
hopefully, only one-and-ahalf
bottles of wine, though most
likely three.
Dog hairs are evident on the
cushions, her beloved Dolce
would rest alongside.
A progressively heavy drinker
since the age of 15, the pensive
young woman who loved animals
and coaching kids on the
mats at dad’s judo school, took
her last drink on November 11,
when she succumbed, mercifully
in some respects, to alcohol addiction.
Millie Spinks’ cause of death
was a pancreatic haemorrhage,
according to a provisional finding
by the coroner.
Grennell describes her only
daughter’s passing in less scientific
terms: “I told her last year
the amount she was drinking
would kill her. She didn’t believe
me.”
A clinical psychologist who
spent 17 years at the old North
Canterbury Hospital Board
dealing with the precise issues
confronting her daughter,
Grennell sought the help of
contemporaries when Millie
refused to heed mum’s expert
advice, and dad’s pleas.
‘I told her last year the
amount she was drinking
would kill her. She didn’t
believe me.’
– Corina Grennell
“We focused on getting her
well but she didn’t listen to a
word we said,” Grennell said.
For Millie, anxiety had always
been an issue – a trait inherited
from her dad’s side of the family.
“She was nervous, anxious
from a young age, she was a bit
edgy,” Spinks explained.
Those fears were exacerbated
by the February 22, 2011,
earthquake, endometriosis also
impacted on her schooling.
Millie also developed an eating
disorder, bulimia. Sleep apnea,
the end of a four-year relationship
and the death of her grandparents
strengthened a deadly
cocktail, her reliance on alcohol
and cannabis.
Four days after the September
4, 2010, earthquake, Grennell’s
father Chap suffered a massive
stroke.
“It really affected her because
he spent the next three months
dying, she was really upset with
my dad because he was paralysed
and blind,” Grennell said.
Millie, then 12, also had a
traumatic experience inside
The Palms Shopping Centre on
February 22, 2011. She was cut
by shattered glass, people around
her were in the same predicament.
“She didn’t go back to The
Palms until a couple of years
after it was repaired,” Spinks
recalled.
Grennell took Millie to a psychiatrist
when she was a teenager,
the first step along a treatment
pathway that prompted her loved
ones to call for a cohesive, and
better-funded approach to the
handling of addiction and mental
health issues.
Looking back, Spinks believes
the pressure of secondary school
triggered her drinking.
“The anxiety about going to
school … she turned to alcohol
and we didn’t know,” he said.
“I don’t drink much but I had
a huge box of whisky and all the
hard spirits in a box, 15 bottles.
She got into that and drunk it
all dry over a year when she was
16. We didn’t even know she was
going that way.”
Once they realised, Spinks and
Grennell were powerless to curb
the self-destructive behaviour
that extended to suicide attempts
preceding her death in the family
home.
“Millie didn’t really want to
change. Her anxiety was greater
than her want to change. She
would rather be who she was,”
Spinks admitted, before revealing
the scope of an addiction
financed by part-time cleaning
work and a benefit.
“She’d start to shake around 11
o’clock if she hadn’t had a drink.
If she ran out of money for dope,
she’d get the shakes as well,” he
said.
“She’d try and make it three
bottles a day, we’d try and make
it two. We’d always try and
encourage her to drop it to two
from three. On a normal day
she’d try and sink three.
“We’d think a good day was
when she only had two bottles. It
was never-ending process.”
And yes, mum and dad hid or
smashed bottles, they’d pour the
contents down the sink, but no,
that wasn’t a solution either.
“We’ve done that. She still needed
it. She was at risk of seizures
and she’d go nuts,” Spinks said.
“She’d rage. She cut her own
throat, she stabbed herself so
hard in the head one time the
knife wouldn’t come out.”
Spinks, who represented New
Zealand in judo at the 1984 and
1992 Olympics, lent on those
martial arts skills when trying to
prevent Millie wounding herself.
“It’s so dangerous trying to
take the knife off her and just
control her when she was not
listening. I can easily do that
because I’m trained in martial
arts but it was just horrible to go
through all that.”
One other night she fled the
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
house after threatening to drown
herself in a nearby creek. A police
tracker dog was needed to coax
her back inside.
The sudden death of her doting
grandmother Bev in August
2019 was another demoralising
blow for Millie, who beat herself
up for sleeping through one last
embrace.
“She blamed herself a lot too
because she was passed out on
the couch the last time nana
came over for a visit,” said her
brother Philip, 26.
“Nana gave her a hug and she
passed later that week. Millie
never forgave herself for that.”
Spinks and Grennell acknowledge
healing their daughter was
a complex task, and likely an
unachievable goal, though a more
co-ordinated response may have
helped her plight.
A private psychiatrist, psychologist,
the Canterbury District
Health Board’s Anxiety Disorders
Service, Eating Disorders
Service and Community Alcohol
and Drugs Service, plus the City
Mission and Millie’s own GP
were involved in what her parents
feel was a fragmented approach.
Their main concern was CADS
classifying Millie’s alcohol use
as ‘mild to moderate’, meaning
she was channelled to the City
Mission.
“She wasn’t mild to moderate.
She should have been more
intensive,” said Grennell, an
opinion backed by Spinks’ firsthand
experience before a relapse
prevention meeting.
“Millie glugged a bottle of wine
so she could go to the meeting.
The guy in the car in front of
us was glugging one. They glug
them to even go to the meeting,”
he said.
Millie completed a 10-day detox
programme last year but she
NEWS 5
family tried in vain to curb self-destruction
IMPACT: The death of her grandmother Bev in 2019, left
Millie feeling remorseful.
Thursday January 7 2021 The Star
resumed drinking soon after.
“At that point,” Grennell said,
“CADS should have said this isn’t
a mild to moderate issue. Instead
she was referred back to the City
Mission.”
Grennell, who planned to take
Millie to a rehab centre in Bali
as a last resort before Covid-19
intervened, will always regret
not being more forthright with
the services designed to help
her daughter, and not heading
offshore earlier in search of
salvation.
“People do fall between the
cracks and I can understand
why because (services) have
always been under pressure and
under-resourced.
“Sometimes people will be
treated but other times they’re
told to go to another place and
that other place can’t take them.
“I really wish Anxiety Disorders
had made the connection
with CADS, she got worse in the
time when she was waiting to
get referred to another service.
I should have jumped up and
down and screamed.
“A problem can be too severe
for the service they’ve been
referred to, then you have to be
referred to someone else … go on
a waiting list. It’s just ridiculous,
and that’s what happened to
Millie.
‘There was a real missed opportunity’
• From page 5
“It’s different in the adolescent
and child area, they’re more of a
unit, but adult services are very
split,” she said.
“It’s kind of like those pinball
machines, it felt like she was being
ricocheted around different
places and she felt like a failure
when she went somewhere and it
didn’t work out.
“Towards the end it was getting
too late but there was a real
missed opportunity and I’ll always
kick myself. We should have
been more forceful in getting her
into a private place earlier.”
Grennell and Spinks called for
more resources to be devoted to
treating alcohol addiction given
the Government reaps millions
from its sale before being lumped
in a consolidated fund.
“Alcoholics need targeted assistance,
there’s limited beds in
rehab facilities,” Spinks said.
Grennell bristled at the amount
of financial support the Government
devotes to high-profile
events.
“Look at the America’s Cup.
The Government has got money
to put into things where there’s a
lot of publicity like these glamour
sporting events but how many
more thousands of families are
struggling with the same issues
we are.
“We were relatively well
resourced and we couldn’t do
anything. That’s what really
upsets me.”
Spinks, who has fond
memories of Millie helping train
juniors at the Christchurch Judo
School an hour or so once a week
in spite of her fragile state, hoped
her decline would serve as a
warning and initiate change.
“This isn’t a specific story about
Millie, this issue is kids have got
nowhere to go and they’re dropping
off the edge of a cliff. No one
cares because they’re doing it to
themselves,” he said.
“If there’s more than a couple
of deaths at an intersection they
start looking at the intersection
and modifying it. We’ve got all
these kids dying of alcohol and
drug problems … suicide.
“Even though Millie wasn’t
technically a suicide, to me she
didn’t want to live.
“You listen every day to the road
toll and other ones (deaths) go
quietly by because they’re doing it
to themselves. It’s not right.”
Spinks was content Millie’s
death had had a positive effect on
her mates.
BOND: Millie
Spinks in a
happy place
on the beach
with two
of her old
devoted dogs.
“The only good thing that I can
see coming out of this is Millie’s
friends, the ones closest to her,
have pulled their heads in a wee
bit and got them back on their
shoulders, hopefully, from her
mistakes.
“If that understanding goes to
more youth, because they read
about somebody else passing
then that’s got to be good. I don’t
like to see bad things happen to
young people.”
So in a sense Millie’s death
has been a release, in her mum’s
words: “She just went through
Gardeners given repeated
legionnaires’ disease warnings
• By Susan Sandys
HEALTH AUTHORITIES are
repeating their warnings about
gardening safely as cases of
legionnaires’ disease continue
into summer.
There were seven cases of
legionellosis reported for the
month of November in Christchurch,
followed by five cases in
December. There were four cases
in October and seven cases in
September.
The total of 23 cases for the
spring and summer period in the
Christchurch territorial authority
area so far compares to 20 in
the area for the same period last
year.
Legionnaires’ is a form of
pneumonia, caused by the
legionella bacteria that live in
moist organic material.
People can catch the disease
by inhaling airborne droplets or
particles containing the pathogen.
Gardeners are at particularly
high risk of catching the disease
as the bacteria thrive in bags of
potting mix and compost.
The illness may be mild but
can sometimes be fatal. It is
more common in older people,
particularly if they smoke, have
poor immunity or a chronic illness.
However, sometimes even
healthy young people have died
from legionella pneumonia.
Symptoms can include dry
coughing, high fever, chills,
shortness of breath, muscle
aches, headaches and diarrhoea.
If you have these symptoms,
you should contact your general
practice team right away for
advice and let them know you if
have been handling potting mix
or compost.
In 2019 there were 39 hospitalisations
from legionnaires’
in Canterbury, while data for
hospitalisations in 2020 has not
yet been released.
The Canterbury District
Health Board is reminding
gardeners of the five actions to
avoid getting legionnaires’
• Wear a well-fitting disposable
face mask and gloves before
you begin gardening.
• Open potting mix or compost
bags carefully by using scissors
to cut off the top.
• Reduce dust by spraying some
water into the bag.
• Work with compost in a wellventilated
outdoor area.
• Wash your hands thoroughly
after handling potting mix and
before touching your face or
removing the mask.
FOOD 11
Light meals for summer evenings
The following recipes
use Shaoxing rice
wine. It is pronounced
‘show (as in ‘how’)
shing.’ Prepared
from glutinous rice,
it is aromatic and
inexpensive. It is
available from Asian
food stores and some
supermarkets You can
substitute it for a dry
sherry
Chicken chow mein
Serves two as a main course
or four as part of a Chinese
meal
Ingredients
Noodles:
200-250g dried egg noodles
1 tbsp sesame oil
Marinade:
1 tsp sesame oil
2 tsp each: light soy sauce,
Shaoxing rice wine or dry
sherry
Salt and white pepper to taste
Stir-fry:
200gm skinned and boned
chicken breasts
2 tbsp rice bran oil
Fancy an Asian meal for a change? Try our chicken chow mein or steamed fish. Both have
authentic flavours and are easy to prepare.
1 tbsp chopped garlic
50gm-100gm snow peas or long
beans, julienned
50gm ham, julienned
2 tsp each: light soy sauce, dark
soy sauce
1 tbsp Shaoxing rice wine or dry
sherry
Salt and white pepper to taste
½ tsp sugar
3 tbsp finely sliced spring onions
or chives
1-2 tbsp sesame oil
Directions
Cook the noodles in a large pan
of boiling water until tender,
about five minutes. Drain well
then toss together with the
sesame oil.
Meanwhile, combine the
ingredients for the marinade in a
bowl. Julienne the chicken, cutting
it into strips about 5cm long.
Place in the bowl and marinate
for at least 10min.
Heat a wok on high. Add 1
tbsp of rice bran oil. When hot,
drain the chicken and stir-fry
in batches until cooked, about
2min. Remove and place aside.
Wipe the wok clean.
Heat the remaining rice bran
oil. Stir-fry the garlic for 10sec.
Add the peas or beans and the
ham. Stir-fry for 1min. Add the
noodles, soy sauces, rice wine,
salt, pepper, sugar and spring onions
or chives. Stir-fry for 2min.
Return the chicken and any
juices to the wok.
Stir-fry for about 3min, until
cooked and hot. Add the sesame
oil to taste.
Great served topped with
toasted cashew nuts.
Steamed fish with ginger
and hoisin sauce
Serves 4
700-800gm skinned and boned
thick white fish fillets
2 tbsp hoisin sauce
¼ cup finely julienned root
ginger
¼ tsp finely ground white pepper
2 tbsp light soy sauce
2 small spring onions (green
part only), thinly sliced
2 tbsp Shaoxing rice wine or dry
sherry
Cut the fish into serving-sized
pieces. Brush with the hoisin
sauce. Line a large steamer with
oiled baking paper.
Add the fish in a single layer.
Dot with the hoisin sauce. Sprinkle
with the remaining ingredients.
Cover and steam over simmering
water for about 5min, until
cooked.
declared a climate-change emergency
JENNY HUGHEY explains what
the council has been doing.
The formal declaration of a
state of climate emergency across
Canterbury was one of the most
serious, and colourful, moments
in the regional council’s more than
30-year history.
A year ago this Saturday,
at 11.49am, Environment
Canterbury became New Zealand’s
first council to proclaim such an
emergency, formally dedicating
itself to consideration of climate
change at the heart of all it does.
The declaration highlighted
that all the work Environment
Canterbury does – from
freshwater management to
biodiversity and biosecurity,
Sunday
21 MaRCh
transport and urban development
to air quality, and also regional
leadership – has a climate change
focus.
Currently, under the Resource
Management Act, regional
councils are required only to adapt
to climate change, not mitigate
it – that responsibility is the
Government’s, but could change.
Even in ‘adapt mode’ many
of Environment Canterbury’s
existing policies and plans already
contribute to reduced emissions.
In declaring the climate
emergency, the Council noted it
would continue to show leadership
on climate-change and do so
without adding new programmes
at ratepayers’ expense. It also gave
staff a clear mandate to continue
and enhance that work.
That work included setting
up a climate-change integration
programme in the Long-term Plan
2018-28, ensuring climate change
was actively considered across
workstreams, increasing visibility
of the science and what we know
about the impact of climate
change on Canterbury, and liaising
on the issue with iwi and regional
partners, other local authorities
and central government.
As an organisation, we have
also made significant progress in
addressing our own greenhousegas
emissions, with our
Christchurch building receiving a
“market-leading” energy efficiency
rating of 5.0 out of 6 in the year
to February on the National
Australian Built Environment
Rating System New Zealand.
The building’s features include
184 solar panels which can
generate more than 55,000
kilowatt hours of electricity per
year.
There has been a 26% reduction
per staff member in emissions
since 30 June 2010. We now have
access to electric and hybrid
vehicles and hope to have half our
fleet hybrid or long-range electric
by 2022. Carbon emissions from
air travel across the organisation
are offset via our own biodiversity
programmes.
According to a Madworld report
in 2019, our gross emissions were
2253 tonnes of carbon dioxide
(CO2) equivalent, compared with
removals of 7883 tonnes of CO2-
equivalent through our efficiency
efforts and from forestry planting
across 2700 hectares.
The changing climate will pose
many risks to life and livelihood
in Canterbury. In recent years
we have seen how occasional,
but extreme, weather events have
had huge effects on residents and
infrastructure around the South
Island.
The driest parts of our region,
along the Marlborough coast and
across much of the Canterbury
Plains, are expected to get even
drier. North-westerly storms are
predicted to become more intense,
with torrential alpine rainstorms
turning our braided rivers into
roaring rapids, fuelling landslides
and causing widespread erosion.
Canterbury’s coastal
communities will be threatened
by sea-level rise this century and
our productive and protected land
jeopardised by the arrival and
spread of new, exotic weeds and
pests from warmer climates.
All these eventualities have
to be planned and prepared for,
and Environment Canterbury
will remain in the vanguard of
these climate change efforts.
One example is the $40 million
Waimakariri River flood
protection project, completed
late last year. The network of
floodgates and stopbanks will
protect half a million people and
$8 billion of community and
business assets from a possible
“super flood”.
The last major flood was in
December 1957, when parts
of Coutts Island in Belfast and
Kainga were swamped by river
flow peaking at 3990 cubic
metres per second (cumecs).
The protection scheme has been
designed to defend Christchurch
from a flood of as much as 6500
cumecs.
Environment Canterbury’s
leadership of biodiversity and
biosecurity programmes is also
underpinned by climate-change
concerns.
threatened and facing increased
pressures due to river system
change.
Wetlands are also ecosystems
at-risk nationally and regionally,
degraded by draining, damming
and diversion affecting their
ability to sequester carbon,
cleanse freshwater and mitigate
flooding, as well as impacting on
biodiversity and mahinga kai.
With biosecurity, we are
putting greater emphasis on the
risks of new pests establishing
in Canterbury. Warming
temperatures, changing soils and
new land uses mean new weeds
especially, will be able to gain a
better foothold across the region.
More broadly, we have to
curb reliance on fossil fuels and
find environmentally suitable
alternatives, such as electricity and
hydrogen, to power our public
transport.
When my predecessor Steve
Lowndes retired as chair of
this council late last year, he
highlighted some of the big
changes on the way. He was
optimistic we would be able to
Mon | 1st February | 2021
climate change and sustainability.
I share his confidence. As a
GARDENING ADVICE
Today’s winning question came from
Peter van Kasteren. Congratulations!
Each spring my fruiting cherry
Q trees have plenty of blossoms
and loads of fruit after the bees
have done their job but in
November all of my fruit falls off the trees
and another year goes by with no
cherries in December. Can you
help? What is going
wrong?
WIN a Daltons Summer Care Pack
A
Because you have mentioned that
your cherry tree has loads of fruit,
it is obviously not an issue of
poor pollination. Possible
reasons for the fruit fall can
be exposure to strong, prevailing
winds, overly dry soils or strangely, the
opposite, ‘wet feet’ (when soil is poor
draining, and the roots are sitting in
wet, sodden soil).
As we often receive very strong winds
in November, this is the most likely
reason for the fruit fall. Next spring, erect
a temporary wind break using shelterbelt
woven cloth attached to poles buried in the soil.
If this is successful in stopping early season fruit
fall, then consider putting a permanent structure in
place.
THE 2021 New Zealand
Superbike Championships
launch at Ruapuna’s Mike Pero
Motorsport Park this weekend to
find the nation’s best motor-cycle
road racers.
Christchurch’s Alastair
Hoogenboezem may be the
defending national superbike
champion and Whakatane’s
Mitch Rees may have ruled the
1000cc class during the threeround
pre-nationals series in
December, but neither rider can
afford to rest on their laurels.
Taupo’s Scott Moir, Daniel
Mettam (Auckland), Rangiora’s
Jake Lewis and Wellington’s
Sloan Frost are poised to strike,
along with Wanganui duo Richie
Dibben and Jayden Carrick.
The pre-nationals Suzuki International
Series last month was
the perfect competition for the
latest model bikes to be tested,
new teams to gel and for riders
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
to gauge where they stand before
the nationals get under way at
Ruapuna.
The series then heads south to
Levels International Raceway,
near Timaru the following weekend.
Then there is a month-long
break before racing resumes in
the North Island at Hampton
Downs; Taupo hosts the final
round at Bruce McLaren Motorsport
Park.
The Supersport 600 class will
also be fizzing this season, with
Upper Hutt’s Rogan Chandler a
leading contender after a dominant
pre-season.
Christchurch’s Dale Finch,
Jacob Pearce and Nick Cain
should also mount serious challenges
in that division alongside
Rangiora’s Avalon Biddle and
Zak Fuller (Taupiri).
Another local trio are expected
to push for the podium in the
Supersport 300 programme,
where Tyrone Kuipers, Andy
McLaughlin and Caleb Gilmore
SPORT 17
Expert help enlisted to boost Coast to Coast chances
BARRISTER HOLLY Weston
has sought the expertise of twotime
Coast to Coast conqueror
Kristina Anglem as she strives
to improve on last year’s seventh
placing in the women’s longest
day endurance test.
Weston said Anglem, who
made her Coast to Coast debut in
1994 and won the women’s elite
one-day race in 2004 and 2005,
has offered valuable perspective
as this year’s event looms on
February 13.
“I was really looking at ways
I could improve on everything
and try and bridge that gap in
my performance,” Weston said.
“Kristina has helped me focus
on the long-term career – do my
apprenticeship in the sport and
eventually it will come together.
“I’m really happy with how I
went (in 2020), but I would love
to be able to improve on that in
2021.”
Anglem, who was forced
to retire from multisport and
adventure racing in 2005 due to
a back injury, had a simple message
for Weston.
“It’s such an awesome way to
experience life, multi-sport …
you get so much out of it that you
put into other aspects of life,” the
mother-of-three said.
Weston also identified one
positive during last year’s
Covid-19 lockdown – the relative
freedom to tailor her training
around the city and surrounds.
Juggling a full-time occupation
with multisport endurance goals
is challenging during the best of
times so Weston said the flexibility
of working from home when
strict restrictions were in place
proved beneficial.
Weston, who also won the
women’s open (18-39) class in
2020, enjoyed being able to fit in
more preparation, though there
was a downside.
“I found it a bit tough trying to
get back into my training routine
with being back at work once
lockdown was over,” she said.
“It was just about getting back
into that mindset again and having
to be stricter with my time.”
Weston said living in Christchurch
means she is never short
on motivation to train, not only
with the locations and facilities
she can access, but also the
number of like-minded training
partners.
“There are so many people
here doing it and having friends
who are doing the event as well
really helps lift the standard of
our training sessions,” she said.
“It is really motivating having
such good quality people to train
with.”
Weston only started focusing
on multi-sport two years ago but
she is already proving to be a serious
contender after some initial
misgivings.
“I was really nervous about the
kayak last year so I did so much
training,” she said, admitting it is
her favourite leg.
Weston is also at home on the
bike, while running is her least
preferred discipline.
“I just think the running takes
so much more talent, the other
two you can really train for and
practice.”
Tight battle for city riders expected in Superbike series
SKILLS: Christchurch’s Dale Finch is sure to be one of the
favourites in the Supersport 600 class this season.
CRUSADERS AND Canterbury
assistant coach Mark Jones will
not return to Christchurch this
year after opting to take up a role
with Worcester in England amid
the Covid-19 pandemic.
The former Wales international,
who focused on team defence
and position-specific player
development during his year at
Rugby Park, headed home with
his wife and two boys after the
Mitre 10 Cup campaign ended in
November.
He was subsequently offered
an assistant coaching role alongside
former teammate Jonathan
Thomas at the premiership club.
The Crusaders are now working
through options to cover
Jones’ portfolio, including a
potential replacement.
“While we are sad to see him
go, we understand the challenges
brought about by Covid-19 and
respect Mark’s desire to return
home with his family,” said
Crusaders chief executive Colin
Mansbridge.
Said Crusaders head coach
Scott Robertson: “In a short
amount of time Mark has added
so much to our group with his
character and extensive rugby
knowledge, I wish him the best
of luck.”
Canterbury co-coach Mark
Brown described Jones’ input
as significant throughout a
challenging 2020, where they
finished fifth in the top-tier
premiership.
“With all his international
experience and Northern
Hemisphere style of play, Mark
really contributed to our first
year as a coaching group with
different experiences and ideas to
Reuben (Thorne) and I,” he said.
Jones said he was grateful for
the opportunity to be involved
with both organisations and
thanked them for empathising
once he opted to remain in the
United Kingdom.
“I would like to thank
Canterbury and the Crusaders
ENDURANCE:
Christchurch
barrister Holly
Weston (left) is
gearing up for
another crack
at the Coast to
Coast. She is
being guided
by two-time
winner
Kristina
Anglem.
for all their amazing support
and understanding around my
family situation and difficult
circumstances on regaining
entry to New Zealand,” he said.
“Their support in this transition
has been immense. Coaching
there has been a terrific
experience that we will look back
on with great memories.
“Special thanks go to the
players and supporters in
Christchurch for taking us into
their family over the last year.
Canterbury and the Crusaders
are two of the few organisations
that actually exceed their
exceptional reputations around
the world.”
Thursday January 7 2021 The Star
will tussle with the likes of Jason
Hearn (Whangarei) and Southlander
Cormac Buchanan as they
eye stepping up in class.
Motorcycling New Zealand
road-race commissioner Grant
Ramage predicts another closelyfought
season.
“It’s almost impossible to
predict class winners, such is the
depth of talent we have in this
country,” he said.
“We know also that, now unrestrained
by pandemic lockdown
conditions, the riders will be
thrilled to be able to commit and
express themselves on the race
track as best they know how.”
The other classes up for grabs
at the nationals are the Superbike
B (support class), 650 Pro Twin,
GIXXER Cup 150, Supersport
150, Sidecars and the 250 Production
(support class, round
one only).
Assistant coach Jones won’t return to Crusaders
relinquished his assistant
coaching roles with the
Mazda SUV slots neatly into range
MAZDA’S CX-30 didn’t win the
New Zealand Motoring Writers’
Car of the Year Award for 2020.
That title went to Mercedes-
Benz’s plug-in, fully electric EQC
400 sport utility vehicle.
It would be fair to say I was a
little ambivalent about the result,
the CX-30 was at the top of my
voting form, and I’m not 100 per
cent convinced electric vehicles are
the cars for today, at this stage of
development the infrastructure to
support EVs isn’t comprehensive
enough.
That aside, I still stand by my
voting criteria, the CX-30 as a
series is a fine range of mid-size
SUVs that simply make you feel
special when you are inside or
driving.
I evaluated the 2-litre GSX
and the 2.5-litre GTX in these
columns last year, this evaluation
surrounds the $50,990 four-wheeldrive
Limited, which also has the
2.5-litre engine.
There are four variants in the
CX-30 range – it starts at $41,490
for the entry-level front-wheeldrive,
and ends at $54,990 for the
all-wheel-drive Takami. The GTX
(4WD) lists at $44,990.
All are high value models,
Mazda is on a course of producing
premium cars at a good price, its
entire product range is tempting.
It’s interesting that Mazda’s
nomenclature for the CX-30 is
out of kilter with its other sport
utility vehicles – CX-3, CX-5,
CX-8 and CX-9. The CX-30 slots
in-between the three and the five,
it complements both, yet it is a
standalone model that impresses
with its versatility. Load space is
generous, and it takes care of the
criticism the CX-3 copped, rear
occupant area is spacious.
Now, I’m not criticising CX-3,
I happen to particularly like that
car, but if you want just that little
bit of extra space and comfort, the
CX-30 would be the way to go and
it builds on the success of CX-3,
nothing is been left out.
In fact, it gets a bit more kit,
especially so for safety with a
very long list of passive and active
elements that easily earn the range
a five-star Australasian New Car
Assessment Program rating.
Major items in the range-topper
include full leather trim with
heated front seats, keyless entry
and ignition, satellite navigation,
head-up display, radar cruise
control and paddle gearbox
shifters.
Of course, there are numerous
other features, but the point is that
in Limited specification the CX-30
is loaded with kit, and that will
lure the buyer who likes plenty of
gadgets.
Under the bonnet there are few
surprises. The naturally-aspirated
four-cylinder engine is fitted across
a lot of Mazda product, and it
stands out for its healthy power
FUNCTIONAL: The Mazda CX-30 has practicality and
performance.
MAZDA CX-30: The Limited model is high on specification.
outputs and relatively frugal fuel
usage figures.
Mazda’s claims are 139kW and
252Nm, with a combined cycle
fuel usage average of 6.8-litres per
100km.
The latter figure is not surprising
because Mazda’s SkyActive range
of engines have been built with
efficiency as a key manufacturing
ingredient. There’s also automatic
stop/start which saves a few
precious drops of fuel when the car
is stationary.
I couldn’t match Mazda’s fuel
figures during my time in the
CX-30, but I did get close with an
8l/100km figure showing when
I took the test car back to the
dealership. At 100km/h on the
highway the engine is ticking over
quite unstressed at just 1800rpm,
offering a 5l/100km instantaneous
readout.
The CX-30 is fitted with a sixspeed
torque converter automatic
transmission. Mazda has stuck
with this type of gearbox and I’m
pleased about that, many of its
competitors have gone with either
continuously variable transmission
or dual clutch-type gearboxes, but
Mazda has proved there’s still a
place today for the traditional. Its
six-speeder works beautifully, shifts
are smooth and quick enough, and
there’s also a sport mode if you
feel the need for greater engine
• Price – Mazda CX-30
Limited, $50,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4395mm; width, 1795mm;
height, 1540mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
2488cc, 139kW, 252Nm,
six-speed automatic.
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 9sec
• Fuel usage – 6.8l/100km
urgency.
In terms of performance, the
CX-30 will reach 100km/h from a
standstill in 9sec and it will power
through an overtaking manoeuvre
(80-120km/h) in 5.9sec. These are
healthy times and serve to prove
the strength of the engine.
I took the evaluation car on
much of my usual inland route on
the roads near the Malvern Hills.
The CX-30 is a sublime highway
cruiser, it is quiet and incredibly
refined.
Riding on quality, sport
specification Dunlop tyres (215/55
x 18in), there is a lot of rubber
on the road, and that transmits
good feel to the steering wheel. Of
course, there are a multitude of
electronic safety systems working
for the driver, they are there if
sensors dictate the driver needs
assistance. One that I’m quite
fascinated by is G-Vectoring
Control Plus, it intervenes if g-force
is deemed too severe, slowing the
vehicle mid-corner with a clever
braking sequence, it isn’t violent
but it is noticeable.
Otherwise, the CX30 has
handling ability way beyond its
design brief, it feels sporty, and
that’s unusual for a vehicle which
is destined for a more mundane
role, but if you look at Mazda’s
sports car heritage, it’s no surprise
that its sport utility vehicle line-up
has elements that draw on that
experience.
I’ve driven three CX-30 models
and have enjoyed each one. I
particularly like the concept, while
the size of it also appeals to me.
I’m hoping to get a drive in the
Takami at some stage, it features
a new-generation engine and has
mild hybrid technology, I can
only imagine it would further my
enthusiasm for the CX-30.
How the newcomer will affect
sales of its stablemates will be
interesting to see; however, while it
may lure a CX-3 or CX-5 buyer it
will certainly appeal to buyers who
may have been tempted by other
brands. Mazda’s standard of build
and quality finish speaks volumes,
all variants feel just so right to be
in for both drivers and passengers
alike.
