The German economy is undergoing a period of upheaval. The automotive industry is
investing billions in developing new powertrain technologies and mobility services, while
manufacturing industries and mechanical engineering are becoming greener and more
sustainable. Following the phase-out of nuclear power, by 2038 brown coal will no longer be used
for electricity generation and priority is being given to developing renewable energy sources.
And importantly, digitalization is making its way into almost all areas of our lives. And as if all of this weren’t exciting enough, 2020 will go down in history as the year of the coronavirus pandemic. The virus is not only putting businesses and jobs at risk, it is also speeding up some development processes.

These uniquefacilities allow research in the field of interventionaltherapies to be carried out quickly andefficiently and evaluated in realistic situations. The focus on application-based researchreinforces the transfer process and connectsbusinesses with research institutions. The networkof companies and universities has beenstrengthened by their combined move intothe newly renovated building where businesspeople, scientists and medical specialistsare located next door to one another. TheSTIMULATE Research Campus is a public-privatepartnership between Otto von Guericke UniversityMagdeburg, Siemens Healthcare GmbHand the STIMULATE association. As a public-privatepartnership for innovation, the researchcampus is funded not only by the GermanFederal Ministry of Education and Research, but also by the state of Saxony-Anhalt and theEuropean Union. One central area of research is oncology. Anintegrated high-tech operating theater is beingset up which uses versatile MRI systems forminimally invasive diagnostics and treatmentof tumors and metastases, in particular inWorld-class high-tech solutions:New imaging processes aretransforming medicine.the liver and the lungs. During the project, individual treatments will be transferred intothe everyday clinical routine. In addition, thescientists are developing an operating theaterequipped with robots for high-precision treatmentof tumors and metastases of the spine. One particularly innovative approach involvesevaluating and monitoring image-guidedinterventions using immunoprofiling methods, which allows the intervention parameters to beoptimized and the recurrence of tumors to bepredicted. In the field of neurology, researchers atSTIMULATE are creating an interventionaloperating theater as a central location orone-stop-shop for acute stroke therapy. Onthe basis of the motto “Time is brain”, this willallow the procedures and the treatment tobe speeded up significantly. As well as the varied research and developmentactivities that take place at STIMULATE, it alsoprovides scientific and practical training fordoctors and medical technicians. In addition, life on the campus encourages interdisciplinarycooperation between doctors and engineers, which makes it possible to develop innovativemedical technology products. A cooperationagreement is also in place for a long-termcollaboration between Harvard Medical School(Boston, USA) and the Research CampusSTIMULATE.The Research Campus STIMULATE hasalso proved to be successful at transferringscientific findings into the world of businessand establishing good conditions for spin-offsand company relocations. The research campussupported the start-up Neoscan SolutionsGmbH. This new company has developed aninnovative MRI system for newborns and isbased next door to “Warehouse A” where thedevices are manufactured and sold. The old commercial port in the capital ofSaxony-Anhalt has not lost its traditional atmosphere. However, it is now no longer sugarand grain that are stored here, but innovativeexpertise which travels out from Magdeburgall over the world. The vision of STIMULATE is to make the Portof Science into a high-tech campus for medicaltechnology, where research and businesscan work side-by-side, develop a symbioticrelationship, create innovations and launchthem onto the market.“The Research Campus STIMULATE is aflagship project where partners from universitiesand industry can work on 21st-centurymedical technology solutions,” says Saxony-Anhalt’sMinister for Economy, ProfessorDr Armin Willingmann.forschungscampus-stimulate.deThe old commercial portof Magdeburg is now anultra-modern sciencecampus.4041
