THE WORKPLACE
By Doug Ross
4 VALPARAISO MAGAZINE | WINTER 2021

eroes have been on everyone’s minds lately. We’ve
gained greater appreciation for what lengths some
people go to in order to serve others. There are
technology heroes working behind the scenes to keep
businesses operating in the office and at home– the ones who keep
businesses running the best and safest way possible. They handle
everything from security, making sure workers and data are safe, to
keeping workplaces clean and safe.
SHAWN MASSA
CEO of Golden Tech
In 2020, they got the added responsibility of equipping workers
to do their jobs remotely. When the pandemic hit, Golden Tech
employees realized their clients’ needs were going to change. “It
dawned on us everybody is going home,” said Shawn Massa, CEO
of Golden Tech. “We took customers’ names and as a team, started
calling our clients. What are your plans, and what are you going
to do?”
Golden Tech is a family owned technology company located at
2402 Beech Street in Valparaiso. They specialize in Managed IT
Services, Code Computing, Data Backup and Recovery and more.
(219-462-7200 | www.golden-tech.com)
Earlier in the year, they loaned out equipment and sent employees
out to pack up workstations for clients. Those clients arranged for
each employee to arrive at a certain time to pick up the contents
of their desks. “It was an eerie feeling to pack up other peoples’
desks,” Massa added, “It almost feels like you’re rearranging
someone’s office.” She mentioned that clients also ordered
“a lot of laptops” for employees.
TIM BUCHER
president of
BucherTech
“We sold a lot of laptops in March and April because
people went home,” agrees Tim Bucher, president of
BucherTech. BucherTech is located in downtown
Valparaiso at 6 Michigan Ave. They formed in 2001
to empower Northwest Indiana organizations
and support their digital transformation.
tech for success | REWORKING THE WORKPLACE
>> Working from home is, for the most
part, not bad, said Joe Grossbauer, security
analyst for GGNet Technologies. GGNet
Technologies’ mission is for people to
get more done with less time, effort, and
frustration by setting up computers and
software the way each person needs them
to work. They are located in Valparaiso.
(219-926-6800 | www.ggnet.net)
With cloud computing, which stores the data
on a remote server, it’s possible to work from
anywhere there is an internet connection.
Your connection to the office doesn’t require
a desk; it could be just about anywhere. “It’s
from the beach. It’s from the park. It’s from
your back deck,” Massa said. “It is moving
forward at breakneck speeds now.”
But employee productivity isn’t just a matter
of sitting down and opening the lid of a
laptop. One of the considerations for people
who work from home is to have a comfortable
home office setup. That includes ergonomic
chairs. “Workers need a chair they can sit in
for more than half an hour without their back
hurting,” Massa said.
“We’ve never sold as many chairs as we
have this year,” Greg Fox, president of
Pulse Technology added. Some companies
offered employees a choice of chairs with
the understanding that the chairs would be
brought to the office when workers returned
to the workplace.
Pulse Technology is an office solutions
business with headquarters in
Schaumburg and a local office at
312 Roberts Rd. in Chesterton.
(800-837-1400 | www.pulsetechnology.com)
The advantage for the employee was a caring
employer who even thought about details like
comfortable seating. The advantage for the
employer was more productive employees
and new office furniture when they returned
to the office.
Bucher took his two monitors with him.
“Having dual monitors improves productivity
20 to 30 percent,” he said. A real keyboard
is better than the one built into the laptop.
With the touchpad sensitive to a dragging
thumb, “all at once you’re typing in the wrong
paragraph,” he said.
Pulse Technology sells other office equipment
for the home, including printers. “That area
of business has gone through the roof,”
Fox interjected.
Security experts are concerned that nothing
bad goes through the firewall. “It’s really
important to control your own data,” Massa
said. In the office, workers typically don’t
think about having a firewall to secure data.
When they work remotely, however, security
should be a concern.
“Firewalls are a real thing. It’s a wall to protect
us,” Bucher said. “Most of us don’t have a
firewall at home. Their router can work like
a firewall, but it’s very rudimentary,” he said.
“Rule No. 1 is without having that firewall, you
can walk right into that person’s PC.”
Bucher’s firm has encountered ransomware
that tried the 10 most popular passwords.
Choose passwords carefully rather than using
one that is easily guessed.
Encryption is an important concern, too.
Grossbauer had a client hit firewall limits in
the fall because of the increased number of
VPN (virtual private network) connection. A
VPN uses encryption to protect data being
sent and received. That enhances security
but can slow traffic. It creates double traffic
because the data has to be encrypted,
decrypted and validated each time. Failed
packets of data get resent.
“My personal internet at home is getting a
little more shaky during the day,” Grossbauer
noticed, with more people working at home.
“Be very careful when handling sensitive
data,” including credit cards, medical records
and clients’ sensitive or confidential records,
Grossbauer said. Networks in the workplace
typically protect data well. “You need to take
extra caution when working remotely,” he
said. That could include a business-grade file
storage service like Dropbox with point-topoint
encryption.“If you’re handling normal
types of stuff, it’s not a big deal,” he added.
Make sure laptops are secure to prevent
concerns about data being lost. “Don’t store
data on a laptop or other mobile device,”
Grossbauer warned.
Bucher has seen an explosion in the usage
of two-factor authentication. That can mean
checking a code on your phone when you log
in so the computer can verify you’re really the
person trying to access it. “It’s a quantum leap
in protection,” he said. Computer security is
a bit like encountering a bear in the wild. “To
survive, you have to be faster than your friend
to get away,” he said. The idea is to deter
a hacker so the criminal will seek another
victim elsewhere. He also likened it to getting
rid of moles. The key to doing so is getting
rid of grubs, their food source. If everyone
Securing data is important, but so is securing reliable internet service
for workers operating out of their homes. Golden Tech helps pay for
its work-from-home employees’ internet service because it’s part of
their job. Internet shouldn’t be an option, Shawn Massa said, but a
universal public utility.
“You can’t do business in a library. You can’t stay in a McDonalds
forever,” interjected Steve Massa, president of Golden Tech. Whether
working from a public venue or at home, there are some security
considerations for using the internet. A helpful hint from Steve Massa
is remembering when accessing a website, make sure the URL has
“https” at the beginning to indicate it’s a secure site.
At home, workers should be using company equipment if
possible. “It’s much, much better if there’s a company laptop,”
Grossbauer said. With a family computer, there’s no
telling what a kid might do that could jeopardize
company data. But companies have to make decisions
on a cost basis, too, he said.
GREG FOX
president of
Pulse Technology
— Greg Fox
Pulse Technology sells a backpack device
(like a fog machine) for disinfecting indoor spaces
to eliminate up to 99 percent of viruses.
Pulse Technology can guarantee consistent
delivery of, sometimes scarce, bleach wipes
to customers who purchase
for long term.
“Workers who were sent home to do their jobs got better at it as they
grew accustomed to the new routine. Along the way, they learned
new skills, too. Everyone in the area has already vastly improved at
collaborating online,” Steve Massa said. They’re sharing screenshots
and screen snipping now instead of just pointing to a chart. “These
guys are working around, kind of evolving as they do it,” he added.
Cloud-based software has made a big difference, Shawn Massa
mentioned, with online versions of standard programs like Microsoft
Office combined with videoconferencing software like Microsoft
Teams, Zoom and others. “It really came at the perfect time,” Steve
Massa said.
SharePoint allows coworkers to share documents, too. But be
cautious about oversharing.“You’re a vendor. Do I really want the
entire customer list shared?” Shawn Massa said. Make sure you
understand and are aware of all the features of software like
that and shared network drives. “There’s a fine line there,”
she said.
It remains to be seen how so many people working from
home will affect a company’s culture. “The office water cooler
does more than hydrate employees. It’s where problems are
shared, where esprit de corps and loyalty are built,” Fox said.
“It’s a joy to see a staff member show up at the office to pick up a
part,” Shawn Massa said.
“When workers return to the office, they want to be socially
distanced from coworkers now, Fox added. Architects and interior
designers are now taking that concern into consideration when
planning workspaces. >>
>> “Deep cleaning is here to stay, too,” Fox
said. “It’s been a real challenge to meet
the demand out there.” One of the more
popular products Pulse Technology sells
is a backpack device to disinfect a room.
“It’s almost like a fog machine,” Fox said.
The office gets sprayed thoroughly, then
everyone stays out for at least two hours.
When it reopens, 99 percent of the viruses
are gone. “The challenge right now is getting
enough of them to meet demand,” Fox said.
Bleach wipes have been subject to scarcity,
too, but Pulse Technology can guarantee
consistent delivery to companies purchasing
for the long term.
Pulse Technology gets samples of new
products and test-drives everything. “We’re
inundated with all kinds of new solutions,”
Fox said. “We have people who are very
well-schooled, and we are not going to put
any product out there that is substandard.”
The 2020 whiplash
of changes to
work lives came
at a rapid pace.
For some, it was
the challenge of
setting up a home
office. For others, it
was getting accustomed
to videoconferencing with
other workers – and often their
pets. Some had to find new ways to
connect with customers. Still others found
it a challenge to deep-clean the workplace
to protect employees from COVID-19.
Throughout it all, technology heroes did
their best to ease the process of protecting
businesses, their employees and their
customers while helping everyone operate
as efficiently as possible.
Choose passwords carefully rather than using
one that is easily guessed. Use two-factor
authentication when available.
THE NEW AGE OF TECHNOLOGY
FOR COMMERCE
By Doug Ross
M
aintaining the physical presence for
businesses, at the workplace and at
home offices, has been a challenge
lately. Maintaining an online presence
is important, too. Businesses might want their
customers to get in line, but they’re going
online first. There are many skilled people
working to help our businesses not only keep
alive but also thrive.
Commerce doesn’t just happen at the
cash register or over the phone now. There
are many pieces to the puzzle, and it seems
the pieces keep moving. It takes highly
skilled people to keep all the correct pieces in
the correct places. It’s important to have
an online presence now. More than 70
percent of consumers rely on the internet
before using a business. That statistic was
from before the pandemic.
“The power lies in the hands of the consumer,
if you aren’t meeting them where they are
(online), then you’re missing an opportunity.
Having information on pricing, product
attributes, payment and delivery options
is just a starting point. If they can’t find
information about your product or service on
your web and social channels, they’ll find it
from your competitors.”
JRS Mar/Com is a digital marketing agency
focused on helping businesses be seen and
be heard. The develop professional online
personas for businesses. They have a local
office at the Purdue Technology Center (9800
Connecticut Dr. Crown Point, IN 46307).
(312-339-9359 | www.jrsmarcom.com)
The pandemic also drove shoppers to look
online to see whether a product is in stock,
whether the shop is open, what colors and
styles the product comes in and what the
store’s price for it is before running to the
store. It’s especially important now to let
customers know whether you have enough
of a product to meet their needs. That’s
especially true if supplies are tight. Businesses
don’t want to have a shopper at their store
expressing disappointment about an inability
to keep enough inventory on hand to meet
their needs. It’s all about building good
rapport with the customers.
Creating a digital
strategy
Marketers’ relationships with clients start with
one key step – figuring out what the client’s
goals are. “What are their objectives? What
are their six-month, six-year goals?” said
Courtney Nicholson, founder and CEO of
“People were using technology to check
out businesses before COVID,” said Chris
Barbauld, president of Barbauld Agency.
For marketers, that goal is obvious – to drive revenue, to drive
business for the client, added Sean Hay, self-described Chief of
Many Things Officer at JCMA, Inc.
JCMA’s mission is to help small business underdogs stand out
What clients are looking for can differ greatly. Some don’t want
to grow much, while others are looking for explosive growth. For
some, the message to marketers is, “I’m just starting out. Let’s turn
this machine on,” Hay said.
HELPING SMALL
BUSINESS SUCCEED
with better business banking from a
leading community bank.
Knowing the budget makes a difference, too. A limited budget can
mean just getting a program up and running. For a bigger budget,
the goal could be to get running fast at once.
For retail, a marketing pro can photograph products, create videos,
check out the competition, write the right message in the right tone
and determine the best time to schedule the post, Nicholson said.
“What people are looking for is authenticity, something that feels
real regardless of the business,” Hay said. “Are they trustworthy?
Do they share values? Some customers want to establish a
relationship before they make a decision. In person, you can read
body language,” but digital makes that more difficult. >>
Communicating online begins with a website.
“An updated website is more important
than ever now,” Barbauld said. “If you have a
business, even if you’re not selling products or
services online, you need a website.”
“That’s whether you’re business-to-business
or business-to-consumer,” agrees Molly
Randolph, vice president of Barbauld Agency.
A website serves as a communications tool.
It not only tells about available products and
services but also the latest news about the
business, whether it’s a sale or a shortage or
news about industry trends. Some companies
use a chat feature to connect with customers.
A chat bot can answer frequently asked
questions. A “contact us” button should also
be as easy as possible to find, especially on
a mobile device. Customers want to know
what the business is like, and responses to
comments say a lot about the business.
“When responding, don’t go negative,
because that can backfire,” Nicholson said.
“Be a fountain, not a drain. Respond to
negative comments or reviews in a positive,
solution-focused manner. And never engage
in conversation that could be perceived
as argumentative with anyone contacting
your business on social media. Responses
to comments and reviews are available for
public viewing, and ought to be considered
an essential means of providing a positive
customer service experience.”
Designing a website
Metrics are another tool to use when creating
an exceptional customer experience. “We’re
able to constantly amend design elements
based on the available data. For instance,
should our Buy Now button be placed at the
top of the page or under a line of header
copy. These minor tweaks in user experience
can have a major impact in sales conversion
rates. Without the correct data measurement
and analysis, you are missing opportunities to
maximize revenues. Content can be
measured in the same way. What topics a
re resonating with your consumers? We
can answer that with both web analytics as
well as social measurement and e-Notice
distribution tools.”
SEO, as search engine optimization is known,
is all about how to draw more eyeballs to the
page and for a longer duration. It’s an everevolving,
complex calculation. Marketers want
to know where traffic comes from, how deep
into the site they go, duration on a page and
other details. Other criteria marketers look at
includes how fast the website loads. “Speed is
very, very important,” Skibbie added.
“The website needs to be updated
frequently,” Barbauld emphasized. “It also
needs to be well designed. Designing a
website is a multidisciplinary project. We talk
about this often with our prospects.”
Programmers are skilled at developing
something that functions well. Graphic
designers make things look their best. A
marketing person who designs a website
wants it to say, “BUY NOW” as a high priority.
A copywriter can blog well.
“At our company, we employ all four of those
disciplines. That way, we design a website
with the end user in mind,” Barbauld said.
16 VALPARAISO MAGAZINE | WINTER 2021

“Most importantly, does the website convert a user to a customer?
That’s really the goal of the website.”
How to do social media well
For businesses, social media has the same goal. “Social media can
communicate urgent messages well to potential customers,” Nicholson
said. She spends a lot of time on social media not just connecting with
customers but also checking metrics to measure performance and
seeing what new social media outlets develop and what they offer. “It
is essential that I am spending time on all the platforms,” she added, to
make sure clients’ messages are being heard and that they’re timely.
Skibbie applauded early adopters who went right to social media to
immediately communicate changes in hours and service offerings
following the pandemic. Restaurants in particular were responsive to the
frequent changes implemented via Gov. Holcomb’s stay at-home order.
Other businesses have been slow to embrace social media as a
marketing tool. With businesses built on a handshake and smile’ it’s
difficult to realize the slow erosion of market share as their competitors
win the numbers game. The efficiencies of marketing to people via
social media provides a competitive advantage.
“What they’re missing is the growth opportunities that come from
connecting with people online. Social media offers thousands of
DC
DREAM
impressions, free of charge, compared to other media. Social media
tools lend themselves to self-implementation, whether it’s the business
owner, an associate or an intern. Businesses have gone from promoting
themselves with just a business card, to a brochure, to a website and
now social media,” he added. “It really is a mind-boggling array
of opportunities.”
Distinguishing your business on social media is becoming harder as
competition increases. While nothing replaces the daily authenticity of
staff photos, interior images, and desk dogs, we are seeing increases in
engagement determined by unique creative. Animations, illustrations
and videos are drawing higher levels of response from audiences.
DAWN COLLINS
MA
Creators are rewarded on social media, even if you can’t afford
someone to manage your online presence, daily snapshots, updated
stories, and fun videos will create authentic opportunities for your
clients to engage.
Hay reiterated that one of the advantages of a social media presence
is to learn what people are saying.
BB
“Small business owners don’t always have the time to keep busy on
social media. They’re often too busy with all the other aspects of
running a business. That’s where a professional comes in,”
Nicholson added. >>
>> Check your listing on Google
One of those professionals, Molly Randolph, vice president of Barbauld Agency, urges
clients to take full advantage of the Google My Business listing. She expressed that
companies can and should build it out themselves. “This is one of the easiest
and more powerful things a local business can do for their business.”
“What a lot of people are missing or misunderstanding is that
it’s more important than any social media channel,” she said.
“Update your hours of operation, too. “Boy, do people get
ticked off if it looks like you’re open and you’re closed.”
Sometimes, Google can steer customers wrong – literally.
Maps associated with business listings have been known
to direct customers and deliveries to previous locations or
even locations in another state altogether. There’s a big
difference between Valparaiso, Indiana and Valparaiso,
Florida or Valparaiso, Nebraska.
Courtney Nicholson,
Measuring effectiveness
“There’s a big difference in how effective a digital strategy can
be, too. Marketers spend a lot of time on data analysis. Metrics are
always evolving, and social platforms are always changing,” Hay said.
Every month, his office team figures out what’s working or what isn’t for
clients. Early on, Hay sent detailed reports to clients,
then he learned they didn’t know how to read them.
Now he interprets the data for them.
Where marketing expertise can make a difference is in interpreting the metrics to
determine effectiveness. “I like to offer gentle guidance when I feel that things should
be shifted in a gentle direction,” Nicholson said. “I’m just a piece of the puzzle.
Simply putting the content out there is one step. But does it matter? A business
owner wants to know where sales are coming from. Working with a marketer can
help pinpoint that source.”
“Clients that have been using digital marketing a long time know who their market is,
and they’re really tuned in,“ Hay said. Start-ups might not know this as well. For them,
the strategy can be to test and fail, test again and fail again, and evaluate to see what
works. “We’re not pouring concrete here,” he said. “The situation is more fluid.”
“They may not be the most lucrative clients, but they can be the most fun,” Hay said.
It’s difficult to argue with having fun while helping businesses create, shape and
maintain an effective digital strategy. But expertise is vital in making it all work
successfully – building a strategy for a digital presence, building and maintaining a
modern, updated website, posting on the right social media with the right strategy,
making sure Google knows where to find your business and measuring how well
your digital efforts are succeeding. That takes hard work even if it can be fun.
The Valpo Chamber Leadership Academy is
a collaborative effort meant to provide a
growing leadership pool of willing and
able leaders and volunteers for current and
future civic, charitable, and governmental
organizations in Valparaiso.
The Leadership Academy program, with the
brings together business and community
leaders to create a network of speakers and
mentors who participate in coaching sessions,
small-group discussions, and skill-building
exercises with the program participants.
Admission to the program is for Valpo
Chamber members only and participants
must have the full support of their employers.
The Leadership Academy is not just about
training. From day one, participants are
encouraged to find their passion for service
and act on it. The Academy’s dynamic
curriculum not only exposes participants to
pressing community issues, but also introduces
them to key community leaders.
A LOOK BACK
>> A LOOK
Valparaiso Enters the
Information
By Kevin Pazour
W
hen Urschel Laboratories purchased its first computer, the
industrial firm had been producing food-processing machinery
for over fifty years. Around 1963, Urschel Labs installed a
computer onsite to control aspects of its manufacturing operation,
to write payroll, and to handle its accounts payable and receivable.
Employee Roy Kruse realized the potential of this machine. He approached Joe
Urschel with the idea of starting a data processing company as a wholly owned
subsidiary of Urschel Labs. After all, the industrial giant had extra cash on hand that
it needed to allocate.
Indiana Information Controls opened its doors in 1967 with Roy Kruse as Executive
Vice President. Kruse knew that banks would be IIC’s primary, and most lucrative,
customer base — though the firm would also provide data processing services for
a multitude of other commercial and governmental enterprises. A June 1967 IIC
advertisement in the Vidette-Messenger warned companies that “You can rent or
buy a computer for peanuts. It’s just the programming time, specialists, operating
expenses, special room, modifications, unused time and over head that cost you
your shirt.” IIC offered its customers the ability to pay only for the services they
required. With such expensive machinery and complex technology, IIC’s offer
appealed to many companies.
Photo of
IIC Machinery from
The Vidette Messenger,
January 29, 1977
IIC could process checks faster and
at a lower cost than companies who
traditionally oversaw their own
billing and payroll programs. In
late 1968, IIC took over the billing
and payroll for the Valparaiso
Water Department. The Water
Department could produce one
bill for twenty cents — IIC could
do it for thirteen cents. It took
workers at the Water Department
about ten days a month to
process billings, while IIC could
complete the work in a matter
of hours. Further, IIC’s computer
system could provide the
Water Department with an
unprecedented wealth of data
on municipal water usage,
expanding the searchable
IIC logo as printed in The Videtter-Messenger, June 12, 1967
categories from two to twenty-five. According
to Water Department Chief Engineer Philip
Coote, the IIC system “shows everything that’s
now on the ledger card, but better.”
A few years later, IIC took over the payroll
program for the Porter Memorial Hospital
and the billing program for a few other local
water departments. However, the firm’s
real profitability came from its number one
customer: banks. By 1969, only two years
after opening its doors, IIC performed data
processing for fourteen banks in Northern
Indiana and Southern Michigan. IIC now
employed thirty people and had added a
second Honeywell 1200 computer system to
its state of the art Valparaiso computer center
at 2401 Calumet. By 1971, IIC expanded its
computer center by 4,000 square feet, bringing
it to a total of 12,000 square feet, in order to
accommodate the swelling demand caused by
its ever-increasing number of banking clients.
By 1975, IIC was processing data for fortyseven
banks in Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois.
The firm had begun to offer “on-line” services
to its bank customers, and was in the early
stages of introducing a system that would allow
customers of client banks to withdraw money
from their checking accounts twenty-four
hours a day — a device that would eventually
be known as the automated teller machine,
or ATM. Though engineers at IIC did not
invent the ATM, the company was the first to
introduce the device to Indiana. In 1976, the first ATM
equipment in Porter County was installed at the East
Lincolnway and Portage branches of the First National
Bank. That year also witnessed another milestone
accomplishment for IIC — they fielded their own
softball team.
IIC continued to grow rapidly. In 1977, the firm opened
a new data processing center in Indianapolis — it now
provided processing services for seventy-six banks in
Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois. By 1982, IIC was without
a doubt the largest financial data processing center
in Indiana. This allowed the company to provide the
customers of its bank clients with a statewide network
of ATMs. Gradually, all of IIC’s customer banks were
connected to online service.
However, by the early 1990s, the demands of Urschel’s
flourishing international business made it impossible
for the parent company to dedicate sufficient time to
its subsidiary. In 1992, Computer Services Inc. (CSI)
of Paducah, Kentucky purchased IIC. At this time
the Valparaiso computer center had 155 full- and
part-time employees, with 255 total. The annual
revenues for each company in the year preceding their
consolidation were nearly equal — CSI generated $19
million, while IIC pulled in $14 million. CSI’s acquisition
of IIC made it one of the largest financial data
processing firms in the country.
The mission of the
We all have been challenged by the
unique, unprecedented circumstances
Valparaiso Department
of 2020 in our business and professional
lives. of Parks Valpo Parks and is no Recreation
exception. With
a priority mission to gather our families
is to be a leading partner
and neighbors together in places and in
programs in preserving, as a community, developing,
we have had
to find ways to safely meet that mission
and promoting Valparaiso’s
in new and innovative ways. Just like
you, unique we evaluate quality the environment of life. daily
and project our course of action with
the facts before us to plan our future
course. We have learned to be nimble
and change course as circumstances
continue to evolve.
Field at Tower Park
018
Overall, 2020 has been an extraordinary
year of service, financial sustainability,
and growth thanks
to our exceptional
staff and volunteers
led by our Park
Board, Park
Foundation
Board, and City
Leadership Team
led by Mayor Matt Murphy, City
Administrator Mike Jessen and Clerk-
Treasurer Holly Taylor. A major
key to any successful year for parks has
been the incredible legacy of private
partnerships of our local business
community even during these
tumultuous times. You have been
steady and encouraging.
As a result, we have had stability in
our traditional programs and created
innovations such as virtual concerts,
social distance runs, and modified iceskating
lessons and venue protocols,
just to name a few.
Along the way, we have had some
remarkable outcomes. Open per the
Governor’s safety guidelines, golf at
Forest Park and Creekside experienced
the highest number of rounds and
revenue in 15 years! Our Creekside
Classic for Kids Golf Outing was our
safest and most successful fundraiser in
its 18-year history.
Rogers-Lakewood Park had its highest
attendance season and highest revenue
year in more than 10 years! Guests
enjoyed the great outdoors with paddle
boats, disc golf, fishing, hiking, biking
and picnicking with family and friends.
ValPAWaiso Dog Park opened in May
of 2020 with expectations of selling
300 memberships the first year. The
Parks is now clearing our wait list to
fill requests for 600 memberships
and counting! Our partnership with
Maggie Clifton, the City’s Community
Engagement Director and with the
City’s Redevelopment Commission
has resulted in improvements at three
neighborhood parks — Jessee-Pifer,
Banta, and Will Parks.
Amid ongoing operations, we are in the
process of completing The Valpo Parks
five-year Master Plan with an ongoing
task force for youth sports facilities, senior
services, and skate park development.
We look forward to reporting to you
soon about those plans. So far over 1,400
citizens have been virtually engaged in
these discussions.
None of these positive results would
have been possible without the
leadership of our Board members,
most of whom are Chamber members,
with many serving as past and present
Chamber officers. They care deeply
about this community and its people
and families!
May our perseverance through 2020
give us a renewed sense of hope,
selflessness, and love for each other
as a community in 2021!
