• By Susan Sandys
A YOUNG motorist caught for
drink driving and immediately
suspended for 28 days, later got
a taxi to get back to his car and
ended up crashing it.
Police say the 20-year-old is
lucky to be alive after his car
nearly flipped in a water race
sometime between 3am and 5am
on Sunday.
Just after midnight he had been
stopped by police leaving a hotel
car park in Lincoln. He was taken
to the Rolleston police station for
processing.
Constable Blair Croucher said
due to the high alcohol reading
his licence was automatically
suspended for 28 days. The driver
was then taken to his Rolleston
home by police.
But he later got a taxi back to
the hotel car park in Lincoln
where he retrieved his car and
drove off, crashing later in a water
race on Trices Rd, Prebbleton.
I HOPE a young chap from
Rolleston has learned a
valuable lesson – don’t get
into your car after having
too much to drink.
On page 1 today we reveal
the 20-year-old was caught
over the limit exiting a hotel
car park in the early hours of
Sunday morning.
But his problems only just
started there.
After being processed for
drink driving, he got a spare
set of keys and went back to
get his car. Not a wise thing
to do.
He got as far as Trices
Rd in Prebbleton where
he crashed into a ditch,
which had water in it. Two
tree stumps were all that
prevented the car flipping,
and the driver potentially
being trapped under water.
One very lucky young fella.
the interest in the car show display
Said Croucher: “The only thing
that stopped his car going into
the water and turning upside
down was two tree stumps on the
bank. If those two tree stumps
weren’t there and his vehicle
overturned, we would have been
looking at a fatality.”
He had lost control on Trices
Rd after going onto a grass verge.
He then clipped a power pole and
ended up in the water race.
The vehicle sustained extensive
damage. The air bags were
deployed and the 20-year-old
received minor bruising from his
seat belt. He was able to get out of
the vehicle and phone a friend to
come and pick him up.
Croucher was made aware of
the crash about 7am, after a passing
motorist contacted police.
Prebbleton is set to be home to three new retail and service hubs. Susan Sandys reports
Construction soon on
first medical centre
Phil Jacobs
Prebbleton is going from
a town without a medical
centre, to having two medical
centres and about five GPs.
Prebbleton Health project
manager Ming Goh said the
co-operative had bought land
at the site and was to begin
construction soon, with a view
to opening at the end
of the year.
It was an exciting
project, particularly
given that it would
most likely be the
first medical centre to
have ever been built
in the town.
“I think it’s been
lacking that for a very
long time,” Goh said.
Three GPs would be based
at the health centre, which
would also have pharmacy,
dentist, podiatrist and physiotherapist.
Meanwhile, chairman of
Halswellhealth board Dr Phil
Jacobs said Prebbleton was a
logical area to establish a third
branch of the practice.
The practice had just
agreed to purchase a block
of land at Prebbleton Village
Shopping Centre and was
undertaking due diligence
while awaiting the land title to
come through.
There was a lot of development
under way in Prebbleton
with retirement villages
and subdivisions planned. In
addition, the new site would
help serve the many patients
from Prebbleton that the
practice already had. He believed
the new medical centre
would begin with a couple of
GPs.
He had heard anecdotally
of another
practice looking at
setting up a surgery in
the town.
“That’s not a particular
concern for us
because we already
have quite a substantial
patient base living
in Prebbleton, so it’s
an expansion of our
own practice really,” Jacobs
said
Halswellhealth was established
about 50 years ago at
Halswell, and it built a second
and larger practice in the
area, at Longhurst, about six
years ago as patient numbers
grew. The Longhurst practice
is its main headquarters, and
the new Prebbleton branch
will likely be of a smaller size,
similar to the original and
older practice.
It was too early to say when
the practice would be built.
“We have some plans on
the table which need further
development,” he said.
Lofty goals set for
COMMERCIAL development
in Prebbleton is striding ahead
as developers set their goals high
and aim to meet the growing
township’s needs.
Work at a prime-site development
on Springs Rd will begin
this month as owners of the
Prebbleton Village Tavern clear
old buildings. The Gilmore family
is planning the Prebbleton
Village Square project, set to
include a health centre complete
with pharmacy, dentist, podiatrist
and physiotherapist.
Prebbleton Health, being
developed by a co-operative of
health specialists behind the new
Yaldhurst Health, is likely to be
one of two new medical centres
in the town as Halswellhealth
also plans to set up a branch
there.
Shannon Gilmore of Prebbleton
Village Tavern said his
family, who had operated the
tavern for more than 50 years,
were looking forward to leaving
a legacy that Prebbleton could be
proud of for generations to come.
“Our development will bring
a community hub concept to
Prebbleton that will feature
the best amenities and design,
planned to meet the needs for
our growing area,” Gilmore said.
The project would include
more than 10 retail, office and
PROJECT: Shannon Gilmore is excited to bring the
Prebbleton Village Square to a prime Springs Rd site.
hospitality services including a
motel, gym and cinema, as well
as tavern renovations. A large
sign at the site announcing the
project sets a completion date of
late this year to early next year.
The district council issued a
five-year land use consent for the
7004m2 site in 2018.
Gilmore said it was fantastic to
see Prebbleton Health confirmed
as part of the complex.
Plans are afoot for another
retail complex, called Prebbleton
Village Shopping Centre, where
Halswellhealth plans to set up its
Prebbleton base.
Prebbleton Village Shopping
Centre will be on Central Ave
behind the Fresh Choice supermarket,
Prebbleton’s first big
supermarket which opened last
year.
There are 13 commercial sites,
up to 450m2 each, for lease or
purchase, as well as a larger
section which Halswellhealth has
agreed to purchase.
be a fantastic shopping centre,
especially being next door to the
Civil works began in November,
of next month, after which construction
would begin, and be completed
by August 2021, Urban said.
The company plans to provide
Developers of a Prebbleton
Rossendale Holidings director
Brent Rawstron and Urban
Urban are joint business partners
in the project on Central
Prebbleton Village Shopping
The pair installed a project
sign at the site on Christmas
Eve as they launched stage
one, comprising the first
five houses. They had about
20 inquiries over Christmas,
from a wide range of
demographics including longtime
Prebbleton residents
wanting to downsize, as well
as younger people wanting to
enjoy all the amenities of the
Civic works to install a culde-sac
Lincoln University deputy
vice-chancellor Professor Grant
Edwards said, after inquiries
from the Selwyn Times, that
the Ashley Dene Research
and Development Station
and the Lincoln University
Research Dairy Farm were in
the process of depopulating,
decontaminating, and restocking
the two farms.
This was under
the guidance
of the Ministry
for Primary
Industry’s M.
bovis eradication
programme.
He said the
two farms were
confirmed as having the cattle
disease in November. This was
following a detect result from
the September bulk tank milk
screening, undertaken monthly
nationwide at the point of collection,
triggering MPI to place the
farms under a restrictive place
legal notice, as per its procedures.
An RP prohibits all unauthorised
movements of farm stock and
other risk goods onto and off the
property.
The discovery of the disease
on the farm had been distressing,
especially for farm staff,
and support had been offered to
them through the Rural Support
Trust in conjunction with the
university.
“The discovery of a positive test
for the cattle disease Mycoplasma
bovis has been extremely upsetting
and disappointing for us,”
Edwards said.
“Due to the specialised objectives
of the research dairy farms,
care is being taken to minimise
any potential impact on current
or future research.”
Movements of cattle from and
to the farms was being worked
through by the eradication programme’s
casing team.
“Stringent biosecurity measures
and practices remain in
place on all Lincoln University
farms,’’ Edwards said.
He was unable to comment on
the number of cows being culled
“at this stage of the process.”
According to the university’s
website, LURDF has an average
herd size of 200 and ADRDS has
a herd size of more than 500.
MPI M. bovis programme
director Stuart Anderson said the
ministry was working through
the depopulation plans with the
two dairy farms, and the final
number of animals to be culled
was yet to be determined.
DairyNZ is applauding the
accuracy of the bulk tank milk
screening programme in helping
to look for infection outside the
cattle tracing network as New
Zealand makes headway towards
eradicating M. bovis.
Most recently, the November
bulk tank milk screening from
almost 11,000 dairy farms across
New Zealand had not detected
any additional farms, outside of a
Canterbury cluster.
New slide and maintenance at
Foster Park playground
A new stainless steel tube slide is being installed at Foster Park
playground next month during the annual park maintenance.
The park will be closed for three weeks from Monday 1 February
to Friday 19 February to install the steel slide and carry out
annual maintenance.
The New Zealand-made steel slide will replace the existing plastic
tube slide, which was closed for much of 2020 due to issues
with cracking. A shade sail will also be installed to shade the exit
of the slide.
The work has been timed for when school is back and when the
contractor is available to install the new slide, to minimise disruption
during the holidays.
Celebrating
Summer in Selwyn
Thousands of residents have been enjoying Summer in Selwyn events around the district, with
more than 40 events still to come.
The Teddy Bears’ Picnic – always a highlight of Summer in Selwyn – saw more than 1700 children
and adults, and a host of teddy bears, attending the event last week in Rolleston.
Council Events and Funding Coordinator Cristene Trenuela-Chan says families and bears alike
enjoyed a fun day out in the sun.
“It was a great community event with our MC George Read encouraging bears meeting new
bears! There was a visit from Captain Hook, Belle and Fairy. Councillor McInnes was the judge for
the Teddy Bears Parade giving awards for the Fluffiest, Most Loved, Biggest, Cutest, and Most
Adventurous Teddies”
People have also been enjoying events including pool parties, the booked-out guided walks and
the first outdoor movie of the season.
If you missed these, don’t worry, because the days are jam-packed full of fun for the whole family
right up until the end of March.
From new events such as the Selwyn Garden series of speakers at our libraries, or the Selwyn
Bike Trail Challenge, to annual favourites, like our outdoor movies and picnics – there’s
something for everyone.
The final two pool parties of the series are on next week at Southbridge and the Pool of Rock party
in the main pool at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in February, where local musicians will be performing.
Or, if you’re looking for a more relaxed activity we have added extra Picnic in the Park events in
local townships with 10 picnics to come starting in Prebbleton on Thursday. The Prebbleton picnic
will be held along with the first Skate Jam of the summer, with Skate Jams held every week on a
Wednesday or Thursday around the district till the end of February.
The ever popular ‘A Month of Sundays’, our live music event series featuring local talent and fun
garden games is back at the Lincoln Green next to Lincoln Library every Sunday afternoon in February.
Council carbon footprint mapped
The Council has taken a significant first step on the road to
becoming carbon neutral by having its carbon footprint calculated.
The Council recently undertook an assessment of its carbon
footprint. The results have been audited and now verified by Toitu
Envirocare, a subsidiary of Crown Research Institute Manaaki
Whenua Landcare Research, which specialises in assessing carbon
footprints and supporting sustainability.
Total emissions for the 2018/19 year were approximately
6200 tonnes of ‘CO 2
equivalent’. Council Solid Waste Manager
Andrew Boyd, who oversaw the collation of the data for the
report, says the report is a critical first step to the Council reducing
its emissions.
“You can’t manage what you don’t measure. We have a base line
now, so we understand what makes up our carbon emissions. Next
we can identify what areas to focus on, and what will make the
biggest difference.”
The report shows the Council’s biggest emissions come from
diesel use by contractors performing services such as roading
maintenance, water network management, and waste collection on
behalf of Council, followed by electricity use. Together these make
up 60 percent of its annual emissions.
The Council is already well advanced with a project to install LED
bulbs in all its street lighting, which will reduce electricity use and
maintenance costs. Further emissions reductions will be considered
from the report.
In December, the Council committed to reduce its carbon
emissions, to carry out regular assessment of risk and opportunities,
and to report back on its actions, in its first climate change policy.
It is also committed to reduce its emissions as part of the Zero
Carbon Act, which sets targets for the country to become carbon
neutral by 2050.
People who lost their job because of COVID-19 are being offered a chance to kick-start their new
business idea as part of an innovative new programme.
The Start Me Up initiative by ChristchurchNZ and the Ministry of Social Development will see successful
entrepreneurs and business leaders support people whose employment situations have been negatively
impacted by COVID-19 to start their own business.
The programme is open to residents in Christchurch, Selwyn and Ashburton districts and who are
receiving a benefit and had their employment situation impacted during the pandemic.
Start Me Up will guide potential business owners, or those interested in learning about the start-up
process, through the process of testing out their concept to see if it has what it takes to be successful.
It will culminate in a graduation event where participants will be able to showcase their concepts to an
audience of local businesses, investors and entrepreneurs.
The programme will be delivered in two stages, with online workshops on the fundamentals of creating
a business, followed by eight weeks of in-person masterclass workshops.
The participants will be supported by successful entrepreneurs, mentors and start-up experts from the
Ministry of Awesome's Te Ōhaka incubator and the University of Canterbury’s ThincLab.
Diane McDermott, Ministry of Social Development’s Regional Commissioner for Canterbury, said the
programme’s wrap-around support will demystify the start-up process.
“Start Me Up will be an opportunity for people
to see if being a business owner is for them,
Jet boat and trailer
stolen while owner
had tyre repaired
• By Susan Sandys
POLICE ARE warning
motorists to stay with their
vehicle if it breaks down
until it can be fixed or
towed.
The advice comes after
a home-made jet boat was
stolen last week after the
trailer it was being towed
on had a tyre puncture
at the corner of Old West
Coast and Courtenay Rds.
The driver left the
boat and trailer on the
side of the road shortly
after noon on Tuesday,
taking the punctured
tyre to get repaired. He
returned about 50min later
to find the boat and trailer
gone.
Darfield Senior
Constable Andy Grant
advised motorists not to
leave vehicles unattended.
“Our advice is to stay
with the vehicle, ring a
friend and get them or a
tow company to come out
with a spare tyre, and if
they have to leave their
vehicle unattended, maybe
try and get to the nearest
farmers’ place and get
permission to secure the
vehicle on their property
while they are away,” Grant
said.
He urged people to keep
an eye out for the stolen
A NEW programme is
offering Selwyn residents
who lost their job because
of the Covid-19 pandemic
help to kick-start their new
business ideas.
Start Me Up aims to
guide potential business
owners, or people
interested in learning
about the start-up process,
and who are currently
receiving a benefit, through
the process of testing out
their concept.
The programme will
culminate in a graduation
event, which will involve
showcasing their concept
to an audience of local
businesses, investors and
entrepreneurs.
ChristchurchNZ and
the Ministry of Social
Development are behind
the initiative. Applications
to take part are open till
Senior Sergeant Dean
Harker said there had been
other vehicle thefts in the
Selwyn area recently.
In mid-January there
had been vehicle thefts in
the Darfield area, a Polaris
side-by-side farm vehicle
had been stolen, as well as
a couple of quad bikes.
He advised farmers to
secure their property, not
leave keys in vehicles, and
report any such thefts as
soon as possible.
Early last week there
had been several vehicles
broken into, either through
unlocked doors or by
smashing a window. The
cars were parked on the
street or up the driveway
commissioner for
Canterbury, Diane
McDermott, said it will
demystify how to start up
a business and provide a
new path for people whose
employment has been
negatively impacted by the
pandemic.
“Start Me Up will be an
opportunity for people
around the suburban
Rolleston area of Lowes
Rd, Levi Rd and Masefield
Drive.
Harker urged anyone
having their car broken
into to let police know as
soon as possible, and to try
not to disturb any forensic
evidence which may be on
the inside or outside of the
car, such as fingerprints.
There had also been a
couple of cars stolen from
Christchurch and driven to
rural roads around Lincoln
and then set alight.
Harker advised residents
that if they saw any suspicious
activity, such as vehicles
in convoy travelling to
a remote area, late at night
or in the early hours of the
morning, to report it to
police.
Initiative to help unemployed
bring business ideas to life
to see if being a business
owner is for them, get a
handle on the start-up
process, and build an
invaluable network of local
support and connections,”
McDermott said.
ARA INSTITUTE OF CANTERBURY
Free computing course
delivers unexpected benefits
A simple desire to become more confident
using computers has opened up a world of
possibilities for business owner Thomas King.
For the past 20 years, Thomas has been a codirector
of a logistics business. Over that time
he’s seen huge changes in the way business is
conducted.
“The world is rapidly changing and to keep
pace with it, having some confidence and
competence in computing is crucial,” he says.
“I realised that I’d have to embrace this scary
but exciting new tech-driven world sooner or
later, and now here I am today, loving what I
once feared.”
Thomas took his first steps in computing at
an Ara Connect community hub, one of several
in Christchurch. Each Ara Connect hub offers
free, non-assessed computing courses for
anyone wanting to gain skills and confidence
using digital technology.
Thomas says the tutors at Ara Connect
welcomed him warmly, made learning an
enjoyable experience and were very supportive.
“I felt so inspired during my journey and this
is a reflection of the good folk who work
at Ara. They’re very attentive and always
eager to assist. They want you to succeed
and they encourage you to push your
boundaries without ever throwing you in
the deep end.”
Discovering something new and amazing
every time he got on a computer was one
of the things Thomas enjoyed most about
his time at Ara. “There are some amazing
apps and software out there just waiting to
be discovered. I’ve especially fallen in love
with collaboration tools which can help me
complete a host of project management tasks.
What I learned was mindboggling and I realise
now that we haven’t even really scratched the
surface of these amazing tools and how useful
they can be.”
Having now completed a New Zealand
Certificate in Computing (Advanced User),
Thomas is considering further study and
possibly a complete career change. “I’m keeping
my options open but a future in IT is becoming
more likely for me with every passing day.”
His advice for anyone else considering
the computing courses at Ara Connect is to
just go for it. “You have the chance to add an
invaluable credential to your CV, and the Level
3 and 4 certificates are a great way to prepare
for further study in any subject. Knowing how
to use computers in a way that delivers results
can make life so much easier, especially in the
world of business. I certainly wish I’d taken
courses like these two decades ago. My advice
is to pluck up the courage and just go for it.”
Pinning hopes on style,
glamour and talent
to win pin-up title
• By Susan Sandys
SHARVELLE Mackay is
practising her catwalk,
1950s-style, for the
upcoming Very Vintage
Day Out in Auckland.
As one of seven recentlyannounced
finalists for
Miss Pinup New Zealand,
the Rolleston 30-year-old
will compete for the title at
the event on April 10.
As well as getting
together outfits for a day
wear, beach wear, evening
wear and talent section,
Mackay is refining her
catwalk, complete with
vintage poses and elegance,
channelling mid-20th
century glamour.
For the talent section,
Mackay, with the stage
name Miss Chevy Chevelle,
plans to sing a 1950s
classic.
She is also preparing to
answer questions on stage.
Although not sure what
these may be, she has given
some thought to what winning
the Miss Pinup title
would mean to her.
“I know as New Zealanders
we can be quite hard
on ourselves, I would like
to be an example of kindness
and encouragement,”
Mackay said.
“These were qualities
that could help bring about
togetherness and unity,’’
Mackay is a long-time
fan of all things vintage,
first developing the passion
travelling in her family’s
vintage cars as she grew
up, and performing in musicals
at her school when
she was a teenager.
In recent years this
passion has grown into
participating in pageants,
as the mother of two, and
RETRO: Miss Chevy
Chevelle, better known
as Sharvelle Mackay, of
Rolleston, is a finalist
in the Miss Pinup New
Zealand pageant. PHO-
wife to husband Phil,
sought to push past the
comfort zone, and build
her confidence.
“Now I just love doing it,
it’s fun.”
Last year she won the
Miss Retro Classic title,
following being a runnerup
in 2019 for Miss Rockabilly
Belle.
Miss Pinup was her first
nationwide pageant. It was
exciting to have made the
finalists’ list and be representing
the Selwyn and
wider Canterbury area, she
said.
Mackay runs the Selwyn
She is holding a pageant
herself next month, one
another, the Muscle
‘Major projects come to fruition’
Sam
Broughton
Selwyn Mayor
SELWYN IS an awesome place
to live, work and play and a
recent crime survey showed we
are the safest place to live in New
Zealand – that’s great news.
These are some of the reasons
why, last year, more people and
their whānau chose to move to
Selwyn above any other district
across our country.
They are attracted by a simple
word – opportunity. The opportunity
to live in one of our
friendly and thriving rural
communities, or to find a forever
home in one of our growing
townships. Big enough to offer
diversity of employment,
fantastic education and amazing
facilities, but still small enough
to offer a strong sense of community,
identity and affordable
housing.
In recent years, we have carefully
planned and managed the
way our district has grown. We
are proud that we have managed
to protect the environment,
future proof our infrastructure
and help our economy and communities
grow in a sustainable
way.
This year is a milestone for
Selwyn and you will see many of
our major projects come to fruition
in 2021. The new eight-court
indoor sports facility will open
at Foster Park, right next to the
new 10-lane, 25m pool extension
to the Selwyn Aquatic Centre.
Our centre piece library
project, Te Ara Ātea, is due to
be opened in the spring and
finally Selwyn’s new Health Hub
will bring some specialist medical
services to your doorstep,
including an MRI scanner and
UPGRADE: The Te Ara Atea library and community centre
being built at Rolleston. Below – The new Selwyn Health
Hub will include specialist medical services, such as an MRI
scanner and a primary birthing unit.
GROWING: The new eight-court indoor sports facility is due to open at Foster Park this year.
It will be next to the new 10-lane, 25m pool extension at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre.
these facilities have been built in
response to your feedback.
We are constantly asking our
communities what you want the
future Selwyn to look like and
I’d like to share some of that
feedback with you.
After receiving initial feedback
for our new Long Term Plan at
the end of last year, we took note
of some of your key points.
You said maintaining Selwyn’s
‘distinct rural character’ is very
important, and I agree.
Of the key things we do in
council, the ones you rated as
most important were ‘maintaining
drinking water quality,
providing green spaces, and
providing and maintaining safe
local roads.’ I was also pleased to
read that you said, on average,
we’ve got the amount we spend
on most of our core services
about right.
As we embark on this new
year, we will take your feedback
into account and weave it into
our planning. Selwyn has done
well in the past decade and I am
keen that, as we grow over the
next 10 years, we are equally as
successful and we build a Selwyn
that we can be proud to leave for
our children.
Aussie Rules career still Wilder’s goal
• By Chris Barclay
KRIS WILDER is primed for
another season of AFL in New
Zealand – and the Lincoln rugby
stalwart is not yet abandoning
plans to pursue an Aussie Rules
career across the Tasman.
It is a long shot for the goalkicking
full forward, but the
28-year-old still has ambitions
to play for an AFL feeder club if
and when Covid-19 allows.
Wilder, who grew up bemused
by Australia’s country-wide
oval ball code when his father
watched Collingwood, was
drafted by the Western Crows
for the first time last year.
He made a big enough impression
to be retained for the fifth
edition of the North Harbour
Stadium-based four-team
premiership, which starts on
February 14.
“It’ll be great to get up there
for my second year,” said Wilder,
who only meets up with his
teammates on game day.
In another boost, local builder
Jeremy Brown is sponsoring
Wilder’s participation fee – $500
covers return flights to Auckland,
transport, food and physio
treatment and kit.
The eight-round schedule is
hardly a springboard to the AFL
proper, though Wilder is still
open to relocating to one of the
code’s heartlands after what is
likely to be his last division one
season.
“I’ve been asked this a few
times (about playing in Australia).
People who ask don’t
realise playing in the actual AFL
… you’ve probably got more
chance winning Lotto coming
from here,” he said.
“You get a bunch of 18 to
19-year-olds from Australia
coming over here, they’ll towel
SETTING GOALS: Kris
Wilder aims to bring up
100 appearances for the
Lincoln rugby club before
potentially heading to
Australia to develop an
AFL career. PHOTO (above):
KAREN CASEY
us up by a hundred.”
The Casey Demons or Box
Hill Hawks’ lists would be hard
to crack as well, but nothing
ventured, nothing gained.
“I’ll talk with my partner. We
were thinking about going to
Aussie at some stage. If that does
happen my goal would be to get
picked up by a feeder team.”
Wilder, who needs 11 or 12
games to bring up the century
for Lincoln, also has an AFL goal
in 2021, selection for the New
Zealand Falcons – the equivalent
of the All Blacks or All Whites –
and hopes international games
can be staged in spite of the
pandemic.
He said Brad Mabor, a teammate
at Lincoln, encouraged
him to have a serious go at AFL,
Mabor also juggled both sports,
playing several AFL New Zealand
campaigns.
“I’d easily watch an AFL game
on a Friday night over a rugby
game to be fair,” said Wilder,
who has adopted the Perth-based
West Coast Eagles.
Still, rugby is still the focal
point on a Saturday for the midfield
back.
“Hopefully, this will be a
normal season (no Covid disruption)
and I should get there (to a
hundred games).
“It’d be a good way to sign off
on a good few years out there,”
said Wilder, who now lives in
Bishopdale.
Double duties for Webb at Ruapuna
• By Allan Batt
ROLLESTON’S JEREMY Webb
could create some history this
weekend when he contests the
New Zealand TQ Grand Prix
and the South Island Midget
Car Championship at Ruapuna
Speedway.
Webb is
defending
midget car
champion
and a former
winner of the
TQ Grand
Prix and is
favoured to do
Jeremy Webb
well in both,
but one driver
winning two
different championship events
on the same night is a very rare
occurrence.
Webb raced for the
EXPERIENCED: Webb at the wheel of his TQ, he is hoping to
add his name again on the grand prix trophy.
internationally-acclaimed United
Truck Parts team in the North
Island during the holiday break,
and while he met with mixed
success there is little doubt that
he has returned to Ruapuna
battle-hardened and ready for
two busy nights of racing.
Forty cars have entered the
TQ Grand Prix with Webb’s
long time arch rival Aucklander
Ryan Barry, who leads a 16-
car strong contingent from
the North Island. Barry, who
finished second behind Webb
will be
very keen to come out on top.
The grand prix event starts
on Friday night with the first
three rounds of qualifying
heats. Friday’s programme will
also feature a ‘one-off’ resurrection
of the TQ Masters which
was a popular event for many
seasons. This year the masters
will be fought out over one 20-
lap race.
Saturday night will be very
busy for Webb as he does double
duty in the remainder of the TQ
races, as well as defending his
South Island Midget Car Championship
title.
Webb will face stiff
competition in the event which,
although it only has 10 entrants,
will be hotly contested by a field,
very even in equipment and
ability.
Sentimental favourites
are likely to be former New
Zealand TQ champion Glen
Durie (Rolleston) who has
been in patchy form this
season, and veteran David Kerr
(Leeston) who has amassed an
unparalleled eight South Island
crowns.
Kerr, who started racing midgets
16 years ago remains highly
competitive.
Others expected to shine
are a former title-holder Tom
Lumsden (Southbridge) and
Rangiora’s Jack Low, both
acquitting themselves well at
Western Springs, Auckland, over
the holiday break.

Getting back into a sleep
routine after the holidays
The summer holidays are so much fun
for children of all ages, and often this fun
has stretched long into the light summer
evenings, creating later bedtimes.
However with earlier school mornings
coming and children needing sufficient
sleep to learn effectively, it’s time to get
back into a term-time sleep routine!
Create a relaxing routine
Whether it’s a bath, reading a book or
listening to soothing music, children
usually have a favourite way to wind
down. Allow plenty of time for a relaxing
bedtime routine, particularly if you are
also working on gradually moving the
bedtime routine earlier.
Bedroom review
It can be impossible for children to settle
down to sleep if they are hot and sticky at
bedtime. Look at ways to cool down your
children’s rooms and make settling more
likely! Invest in a fan, make sure they have
very light summer bedding (such as using
a duvet cover with no inner), cool summer
PJs and blackout blinds.
A gradual return to term-time
lights out
If your child has been falling asleep at
10pm and you want to move back to an
8pm bedtime, you’ll get a lot of resistance
if you try to make the change in one go!
Allow up to a week to gradually move
bedtime earlier, bringing the lights out
time earlier by 15 minutes a night. That
way you allow your child’s body clock
to slowly adjust and also your child can
gradually change their activities and
expectations around bedtime.
Bedtime versus Lights Out time
Try using the concept of Lights Out time.
This is the not negotiable time during the
school term and shorter holidays. Have
each child in bed at least 30 minutes before
their Lights Out time so they know when
their lights go out, they need to be ready
for sleep. As a guideline, try Lights Out
at the following times: Age 4 - 7:15pm,
Age 7 - 7:30pm, Age 9 - 8:00pm, Age 12 -
9:00pm.
Gadgets off
The hour before bed should be a noelectronics
zone. Studies show the light
from backlit electronics (like tablets,
smartphones and video
games) can disrupt children’s
ability to fall—and stay—
asleep.
Dial down the screen
time
Screen time can easily
increase over the holidays,
as children have had more
free time and have gravitated
to some of their favourite
activities. So a biggie for
getting back to their termtime
sleep is to reduce screen
time back to what you allow
outside of the holidays. A
good rule of thumb is to
try to limit recreational screen time to
60 minutes every day. And for every 30
minutes of screen time, make sure your
kids get 30 minutes of physical activity.
Consider banning hand-held
devices from your child’s bedroom
Have a family gadget charging zone,
where all devices are charged overnight
and no gadgets stay in children’s bedrooms
overnight. The burst of light from a phone
(even if it’s just to check the time) can
make getting to sleep or resettling difficult.
A regular alarm clock is recommended for
seeing the time and the actual alarm.
Sleep Trainer Clocks are still
handy
Often parents start using a sleep trainer
clock, such as a gro clock, with early
waking toddlers. But they are still very
useful with pre-schoolers and school
age children, particularly if they are not
confident telling the time. The clock says
it’s bedtime and the clock says it’s morning
time, which can help with those resistant
to getting back into getting up for school!
Lincoln High, ‘building awesome
young men’
2020 has been a year that has placed so many of
our community in positions where we have had to
think outside the box. For a small team at LHS, this
has indeed been the case. With the participation and
achievement of male students declining nationally
we have thought outside the box and created our
‘Building Awesome Young Men’ programme. This
programme alongside the many other amazing
extra-curricular offerings at Lincoln, enables male
students from Year 7-13 at LHS and our primary
schools, to participate and engage in some incredible
opportunities and activities focussed on developing
their confidence, challenging their boundaries and
supporting and educating about their wellbeing.
In 2020, these have included: crossfit workouts,
mindfulness, yoga, CHCH Adventure Park, BAYM
breakfast at Larcombs with Mark Inglis. 2021 is
looking even more amazing with sunrise surfing,
overnight Matariki trip to Rapaki Marae for taiaha
and wakaama and a five day traverse of the South
Island.
What has been really special about BAYM is that it
has received so much support from our community.
A big thank you to our 2020 sponsor – Selwyn
Strength. Without our community behind us – none
of these opportunities would be possible.
Let’s begin.
Tips to help your child
succeed at school
Investing in your child’s education
is more than just buying books and
uniforms. When you actively stay in
touch with your child’s school and
be involved in your child’s learning
experience, you give both your child and
the school the opportunity for a positive
outcome.
1. Meet your child’s teacher – As
soon as school begins go along and
introduce yourself and let the teacher
know you are invested in your child’s
education.
2. Know who is responsible for
what at your child’s school –
There are plenty of people there to
help your child learn and grow, such
as the principal, specialist teachers,
administrators, librarian, Board of
trustees, PTA, etc.
3. Learn what the school offers
and keep up-to-date with what’s
happening – Check your child’s bag
weekly for newsletters or check your
school’s website information.
4. Support your child at school
throughout the year – Regularly
attend the parent-teacher meetings. Talk
to your child before you go and find
out if they have any concerns, how they
feel about school. At the meeting ask
questions such as: is your child settled
at school, does your child participate, is
your child progressing as expected, does
the teacher have any concerns, and what
can you do at home to help your child?
5. Make sure that your child gets
homework done – Ask your child
if they get homework and make sure
there is somewhere quiet in your home
where they can do their homework.
Create a routine that allows time for their
homework as well as some leisure time.
6. Volunteer at your child’s school
and/or join your school’s Parent-
Teacher Association (PTA) – Being
part of your child’s school life allows
you to actively participate and make
decisions that benefit the school and
help with learning opportunities,
whether it is as a parent-help in class
or raising funds for the school.
7. Be an advocate for your child –
Make sure your child knows that you are
there for them, that you will ask questions
on their behalf, support them when they
We’re heading
back to school
Please watch out for us
selwyn.govt.nz
Over 10,000 learners
on the move in 2021!
Over 10,000 Selwyn learners will be
travelling back to school soon – that’s
nearly 20% of our population out and
about and on the move.
Selwyn School Road Safety Coordinator
Stephanie Hautler is asking
everyone to keep their eyes peeled for
young people heading back to school
by foot and on wheels. “A lot of our
little people will be really distracted
when heading back to school with the
excitement of seeing their friends and
meeting new teachers, so it’s important
to slow down and be alert when driving,”
says Mrs Hautler.
With the more settled weather, it’s a
great opportunity to get active with your
child. If you are pushed for time, park
your car a block back from school so your
child can still get the scooting or walking
experience. It is good for them both
physically and mentally, develops their
road safety skills and helps with overall
congestion at the school gate.
“Road safety awareness is a vital life
skill and starts developing when you are
young. Take every opportunity to educate
children on how to safely cross a road
using their eyes and ears,” Mrs Hautler
says. “A fluro yellow vest makes your child
visible in poor weather as well as bright
sun. Most schools have them available for
free or a small cost and they really make a
difference.”
School travel safety tips:
• Be bright be seen, ask your school for
a safety vest.
• Tackle the routes together talking
about sneaky driveways and blind corners.
• Get out and active together to reduce
the chaos at the school gate.
• Wear your helmets, this goes for
caregivers too, young people are watching
you!
and children are available from
ADVERTISING
A rare opportunity to purchase an acclaimed
piece of Canterbury History now beckons
Tucked away for decades and unbeknown to probably
most of the district sits a stunning piece of Selwyn
heritage - Kirwee House. Following the Colonial Wars
in India and as a reward for almost 35 years continual
service to the British Army Colonel de Renzie Brett was
awarded safe passage to New Zealand and was granted
right to purchase 1000
acres in Canterbury.
After months at sea in
one of the early settlor
ships ‘the Greyhound’
and amongst many
deaths that regularly
occurred on board, he
arrived with family into
Lyttleton in September
1865 and commenced
the build of Kirwee
House. The township
of Kirwee was actually
named by Colonel Brett
(originally called Karwi)
after a village that
he had fought for in rural
India. The township
carries several street
names that reflect his
significance in the district.
The property sits
on Courtenay Road as
the original homestead
of the area.
The build initially
consisted of three separate
buildings including
his servants quarters
and sees some of the
original Oregon pine
used as flooring which was the ballast
from the settlor ships themselves and
to this day sit as a proud reminder of
the ingenuity of these colonial built
properties. Windows are all hand
made to reflect the influence of Indian
styling and resembles
shapes of the Taj
Mahal. Even planting
of the well-established
gardens is said to be
a reflection of the position
of his troops in
the battle of Karwi and
is a magical example
of this character and
history this home
offers.
Colonel Brett,
after witnessing firsthand
what could be
achieved in India
with water races was
a prominent figure in the creation of
what we see today. Whilst he attempted
to seek local authority approval
to take water from the local river he
came up against local bureaucracy and
after some frustration, allegedly did it
anyway, and to this day the use of water
races remains a reliable and efficient
way to in bringing water to the parched
areas of the Canterbury plains.
With typical Irish humour and short
wick, Colonel Brett “took on” on the
local established Canterbury Club,
which he simply couldn’t connect with.
Instead, he formed his own ‘Canterbury
Club’, where it is recorded that many a dance and
function were held (including rugby training on stormy
nights) in the property’s barn, which still stands today.
This property has been in the same family for decades
and this once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase a
piece of history and lends itself to a possible wedding
venue or country B&B with an abundance of stunning
locations and its own two level newly built cottage,
which overlooks its own pond.
Paul Robinson of RE/MAX Eclipse in Rolleston is
honoured to have been selected as agent to find its new
owners and welcomes enquiries, some of which have
already been high including calls from England. For
DEADLINE SALE
Kirwee House - Steeped in History
A chance to purchase an acclaimed piece of Canterbury History now beckons. Kirwee House, originally Built by Colonel Brett in 1865
has been occupied by the same family for decades and now the time has come to pass the torch of ownership of its stunning history.
Built at a time where the colonial ships were bringing the pioneers from the UK and Ireland to Canterbury, this home which originally
consisted of 3 separate buildings now carefully bridged to present a home with 6 plus bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and an abundance of
style and grace and even harbours the original wooden flooring of the ships themselves.
The Homestead is complimented by a recently built 2 bedroom minor dwelling which sits proudly beside its own duck pond and boldly
brings in panoramic views of Banks Peninsular. A perfect scenario for extended family.
years ago but has stood the test of time to become an important piece of our colonial history.
The challenges we have all faced in 2020
have proved to us at the Christchurch School
of Music, just how important music is to
our well-being, a sense of purpose and an
opportunity to communicate and collaborate
with others to create something very special.
It was wonderful for us to see the
excitement and enthusiasm of our students
on the first day back at rehearsals as soon
as we came out of Level 2. “ I didn’t realise
how much I loved orchestra until we went
into lockdown and I missed it so much”
Comments like this were very common
on the first day back. We may have had to
sanitise our hands, sit socially distanced
from our friends in the ensemble, spray our
chairs and stands between groups but it was
all worth it just to have the chance to make
music again.
The Christchurch School of Music is
a family-oriented community aimed at
providing quality music education in
and around Christchurch. We believe
passionately in the power of music to
promote well-being and joy in people’s
lives and we constantly strive to ensure our
kaupapa meets the needs of all the students
in our care.
junior school children can start their musical
journey by joining in our “Take Off with
Music” classes while older children and
adults may opt for lessons on a specific
instrument (including voice). Those who
already play are welcome to join in one
of the great ensembles which all take part
in regular concerts. Our students enjoy
ensembles in a wide range of genres from
classical through to choral, jazz, rock and
world music.
Age is no limit - our Late Starters
programme provides the opportunity for
adults to learn an instrument and join an
ensemble with other like-minded adults.
If Saturday isn’t an option, CSM also
offers a range of weekday opportunities
for learning and playing music and, if
affordability is an issue, CSM may be able to
GARDENING
Still time to get fresh veges on the table
HERE IN THE southern
hemisphere, the Christmas and
New Year holidays probably
arrive at the worst possible time
for the garden, especially the
summer vege garden.
At this time of the year,
temperatures are normally
high and there is little or no
rainfall (although great for
holidaymakers!)
Returning from a relaxing
holiday, the garden often looks
like a serious challenge and
in many instances there is
WHETHER YOU’RE going away
on holiday or staying put, the
prospect of watering the garden
– container plants in particular –
can put a real dampener on your
summer.
The easy answer would be to
just put all container plants into
the garden and be done with the
fussing.
However, there’s no denying
that a few well-chosen container
plants bring a decorative flourish
to bland deserts of paving and
deck.
They are invaluable, too, for
standing like bouncers beside
entrances or enhancing the end of
some clever vista you have carved
out of your plot.
However, as plant accommodation,
rather than providing
a luxury getaway, pots and
containers are more like a prison
sentence, with water and food
limited and excess sun and wind
in exposed locations.
This means you need to be
cunning with your compost and a
wizard with your choice of green
matter.
Why is it that weeds can abseil
their way into a pot and look
so healthy while the plant you
intended to shine on its glazed
pedestal looks anaemic and spindly?
I suspect it’s because most of
us are unrealistic about the level
of maintenance we will need to
lavish on our charges.
It’s tempting to go for muti-coloured
pot plants but such highoctane
performance demands
the pampering of a movie star –
weekly deadheading and feeding
and almost daily watering,
so it’s really only for the keenest
enthusiast.
Spring bulbs are another classic
disaster area – irresistible when
we see the pictures at the garden
centre but a disaster a fortnight
after the party is over when we
fail to follow up after the leaves
and flowers at the start of the year
have flopped and faded.
Stick them in plastic containers
before sinking them inside a
classy bit of earthenware.
Later, out they go to make way
for a more permanent successor.
It is a mistake to assume special
new plants somehow deserve a
temptation to abandon the entire
garden altogether.
But don’t give up. There are still
months of warm weather ahead
in which your summer garden
can thrive, especially your vege
garden which can continue to
produce plenty of fresh food for
the table.
Preparation of beds before
planting is always one of the keys
to success and is never more
important than in planting a
summer garden.
Epiphytes include spiky astelias as
This will improve the soil texture
as well as helping retain moisture.
ABUNDANCE:
If you have a
large number
of pot plants
they will need
extra special
attention
during
summer.
well as other native foliage plants
such as Griselinia lucida and
pseudopanax – both of which are
amazingly drought-tolerant.
Don’t mingle too many specimens
in one confined space
because fights are bound to break
out. Instead, give each its own
home but herd pots together to
create communities of contrasting
forms and textures.
As with your wardrobe there
will always be the classics that
never go out of fashion and which
form the backbone of your collection.
Succulents are foolproof.
Choose the dramatic ones such
as aloes and softer euphorbias
or those which are able to bungy
over the sides of even the tallest
well).
Applying mulch and feed
around your vege plants will not
only improve soil water retention
but will also help suppress weeds.
Provide shelter to the more
exposed parts of your garden as
hot winds dry soils very quickly
and can cause ‘stress’ to young
plants.
Be vigilant with insects in the
garden. When temperatures rise,
pests such as aphids, white fly and
passion fly hopper can multiply at
an astounding rate.
of drums. One such is Sedum
morganianum with its waxy grey
dreadlocks. Neat topiary balls,
cones and humps, whether it
be box or native coprosma and
corokia, have minimal water
requirements, but don’t discount
conifers which are surprisingly
drought-tolerant.
Bromeliads never outgrow their
place in a pot if sited sensitively.
Some, such as neoregelias and
alcantarias, require full sun but
many of the vrieseas need more
shade.
Never underestimate the class
of one substantial foliage star.
Even something as simple as a
large agapanthus in sun or a clivia
or specimen fern in shade will be
dependable staples which, like a
little black dress, always earn their
place on the rail.
Get the best out of container
plants by providing ideal conditions.
Always choose a good quality
compost for containers. Soil or
loam-based products retain water
and nutrients better.
Top pots up with a slow release
fertiliser every year, especially if
you never supplement with the
occasional liquid feed.
Water-retaining gels are effective
when repotting plants but
don’t rely on them alone. A good
old-fashioned saucer to catch water
under a pot and a thick mulch
at the top are just as useful.
If you are away in summer,
shady corner.
Hydroseeding perfect
solution for the perfect lawn
Hydroseeding is a cost effective and
efficient way of creating a new, great
looking lawn without the hassle of
growing a new lawn from scratch.
Locally owned by Zac and Ashley
Swale, Canterbury Lawns specialises in
hydroseeding, a spray-on application
of water, grass seed, wood fibre mulch,
fertiliser and tackifier (a glue which
holds the mix to the surface it is sprayed
on). This method gives the best chance
for the seeds to germinate and become
your beautiful green and luscious lawn.
Providing it is well maintained and the
conditions are right, it takes four to six
weeks to see the results.
Hydroseeding can be done any time of
the year as the products used are suited
to the season but in summer your lawn
will germinate much faster. Watering,
however, is key and Zac recommends
having an automated irrigation system
installed to make the job easier, more
convenient and more efficient in terms
of water use and can advise regarding
the best type of sprinklers for your
needs.
Zac and the team are also specialists
in erosion and dust control for both
commercial and residential areas. Their
hydroseeder can hold large quantities at
a time making the job more efficient and
they can source top quality products to
suit each job.
Canterbury Lawns also installs roll-out
instant lawns using top quality products
which are locally sourced and, as part
of their service, clients are given an
advice care sheet after the job has been
completed so they can confidently caring
for their new lawn.
Landscaping is another part of the
Canterbury Lawns service whether
you need garden preparation, site
clearing, a new fence, paving or decking.
They not only work close to home on
residential properties but also specialise
in commercial and larger-scale work,
bringing to any job a high level of both
expertise and enthusiasm.
For more information phone Zac
Extending the life
of your spouting
Birds nesting in your home’s spouting is not only
be a noise issue but the eggs and young chicks can
also attract vermin which can then get inside roof
cavities and chew through wiring creating a fire
hazard within your home.
Gumleaf Gutter Guard is an effective way
of preventing birds from making nests in the
spouting and soiling walls and windows with their
droppings. The guards can also protect tank water
from being contaminated, ensuring the safety and
quality of the water supply.
Another key advantage of Gumleaf Gutter Guard
is that it prevents leaf litter from gathering in the
spouting.
“Leaf litter remains damp and acidic and that
wrecks the spouting,” says owner Rohan.
“By having Gumleaf Gutter Guard installed, the
life of the spouting is extended to the life of the
roof.”
Snow can also damage spouting, and again
Gumleaf Gutter Guard will protect the spouting
by spreading the load, Rohan says.
Developed in Australia more than 20 years
ago, Gumleaf Gutter Guard has been providing
a quality and effective solution in New Zealand
for the last decade, Rohan says. Much of his work
comes from repeat business, with customers
happy with both the product quality and the
service he provides.
Customers requesting a quote will receive
it within 24 hours, and Rohan says he will “go
anywhere to provide a quote”.
He is also available Monday to Saturday to speak
to customers who call him.
“Even if I am working on a job, I will talk to
anyone who calls me,” he says.
Once a quote is accepted, the job is started
within 10 days, with installation on an average
sized house taking one to two days. Rohan also
does any necessary minor repair jobs on the roof at
the same time.
Buying a barbecue
With summer here and hot weather
predicted for the coming month, along
with the widespread sales around, it
is a great time to either buy your first
barbecue or upgrade your old model.
Firstly, prices can go up to $7000,
depending on the size of your chosen
grill, the number of features it boasts and
the quality of its construction.
Gas barbecues can to be more expensive
while charcoal requires more time to get
going as the embers need to be piping hot
to cook the food properly, although if you
invest in a chimney starter you can speed
up the process be cooking in 15 minutes.
The taste from a charcoal barbecue is
distinctive because the cooking is slower
so the moisture in the meat makes it more
succulent. With a gas barbecue this extra
moistness can be copied by using woodchips
in foil with holes in it.
Gas barbecues allow you to start
cooking almost immediately. As the
temperature is regulated, gas tends to
cook more evenly than charcoal. On some
machines with multiple burners you can
cook food at different temperatures. This
is handy for foods that require varying
heat intensities.
Many barbecues come without a hood,
but it is worth looking for one that does
have a lid, making it more versatile than
an open grill and making it easier to
control the heat.
When considering the size of barbecue
think about what you’re going to cook. A
standard grill works well for steaks but
if you are cooking burgers and sausages
for a large group of people you will need
a bigger space. Warming racks are also
handy.
If you are intending to cook food that
would possibly slip through the grill (such
as eggs) then a model with a hot plate
would be handy. Other models have side
burners for sauces, boiling potatoes or
vegetables.
Also consider the practicalities, such as
where you will store the barbecue when
not in use. If it is placed outside a fitted
cover is a good investment.
Once you have done the initial thinking
about your requirements, visit one of the
many retail outlets and happy grilling.
Happy New Year
from intelligro
We hope you had a wonderful Christmas and
brought in the new year in style.
January and February are harsh months on the garden with the
temperatures rising and little rain. Water management is important at
this time of year, and maximising your irrigating is important. Watering
in the early morning or evening is the best time, rather than the heat
of the day where a lot of water is lost due to evaporation.
We have a great range
of sprinklers and hoses
in store to help you
combat the lack of rain!
Adding a layer of bark
or mulch to your garden
will help to lock in the
moisture too.
Options include building on sections
a specific site. We’ll always make sure the
Upgrade for desirable Subaru XV
SORED CONTENT
I THOUGHT I had cracked
it – convincing my wife that a
new car would be a good idea
and, what’s more, it was she who
brought up the subject.
She had just driven Subaru’s
new XV sport utility vehicle and
told me how much she enjoyed
the experience, saying it felt of
quality through and through,
and it was good to be behind the
wheel of. She then asked about
the price and suggested that it
was a car of far higher value than
that of its $42,490 price tag.
That’s the price of the Premium
model, a lower specification
variant without leather and a few
other goodies sits at $37,490 and
was the model I suggested would
be good for us. To throw another
question mark into the equation,
there is a hybrid XV which also
sits at $42,490.
The Premium spec XV is fully
loaded with high grade trim materials
and a long list of electronic
safety spec. Many of the safety
features are guided by the camera-based
Eyesight technology
that has been a Subaru trademark
for many years now.
The entry-level variant doesn’t
get all the trick guidance systems,
but Eyesight is still an integral
part of the XV safety network on
all models.
Why I’m mentioning the difference
in the line-up is because
there are buyers like me who, in
an endeavour to buy a new car,
would need to scrape together
every dollar to make the purchase
and savings at any given
point may just be the difference
between affording the vehicle or
not.
That aside, the Premium is a
premium car, it has heated seats,
electric adjustment up front, keyless
entry and ignition, satellite
navigation, Apple Car Play and
Android Auto connectivity, sunroof
and steering wheel-mounted
paddle shifters.
For 2021 Subaru has upgraded
the XV, it gets more technology
in the form of a new door locking
safety system, the inclusion of
SI Drive that allows the driver
to select varying drive models,
there’s new bumpers, fog lights
and grille, along with new alloy
wheels.
The Premium gets 18in wheels,
the standard XV gets 17in. From
memory they don’t look a lot different
from those of the previous
version, they are bold but fit the
character of XV.
There is also a greater choice
of colours, the test vehicle was
Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
Harcourts Four Seasons give
back to the community
If there’s a community event happening in Lincoln, it’s a safe
bet that someone from the Harcourts Four Seasons team will
be there. It’s just what they do. In fact, they pride themselves on
being visible in the community so that we, the residents, know
we have trusted professionals on our side when it comes time
to buy or sell homes. They focus on giving back—sponsoring
the golf and bowling clubs, assisting the community, supporting
schools, participating in the annual Santa parade, raising money
for Daffodil Day—it’s why they’re great at what they do. They
create strong relationships, and that’s proof they’re willing to be
part of it all.
The Harcourts team sits proudly on Gerald St and it’s a location
they’re proud of, with most residents probably driving past every
day. They moved in about three years ago and haven’t looked
back. It’s a place for customers to stop by to ask all those burning
questions about property, plus it acts as a hub for their twelve
agents—many who live locally and know the area like the back of
their hand.
Don’t wait, jump in now
Harcourts are seeing plenty of sales activity right now, and
it’s clear that Lincoln is growing fast. The team is excited to be
a strong part of that future and, thanks to the council planning
ahead of the curve, Selwyn is in a good, healthy position; the
area is coping with the growth and there are plenty of exciting
opportunities, especially in commercial development. The local
residential market is strong with low interest rates driving activity
and there are plenty of buyers out there snapping up almost
everything that hits the market. Plus, it helps that Lincoln is one
of the few spots left with available land for sale. James Twiss,
business owner of Harcourts, says, “It’s a fantastic time to buy
and sell. But if you’re selling, make sure you buy on the same
market. Take the opportunity; but do it quickly, don’t wait.”
Harcourts Four Seasons Realty has
eight branches between Hanmer
and Lincoln. You can find the Lincoln
branch at 6 Gerald Street, Lincoln or
