Memories of shaping the Ashburton
district were among those rekindled as
former workmates from across the years of
Burnetts Transport reconnected in a
much overdue staff catch up.
It was the culmination of hundreds of
hours work behindthe scenes for
organisers JaneNaish, Maurice Wootton
and Carol Muckle. But it was worth it.
The catch­up on Saturday had been
talked about for many yearsand needed to
happen while people who remembered
working at the old Burnettsyardswere
still around.
The three organisers gathered stories
and memorabilia from former staff and
displayed it handwrittenand typedon
information boards, alongwith hundreds
of borrowed photographs, and newspaper
clippings for people to view.
The information gathered wasdue to be
printedinthe next few weeks and
available for those whowanted it, Mrs
Naish said
She was hoping to keep the costaslow
as possible.

It’s alike asad endingina
blockbuster movie;it’s unwanted and
tears have beenshed.
But after monthsoftrying to make
it work, the credits are rollingfor
United Video Ashburtonand they are
closing the doors.
Owner Kevin Stewart, still coming
to terms with the ending, madethe
decision public late lastweek.
The following day all product in
store was for sale including shelves,
gaming consoles(since sold) and
hundreds of DVDs and games.Back
catalogue DVDs were sellingfor $5,
BlueRay $6, and box sets of movies
$15.Games andnew releasesvary in
price.
And ironicallytheyhad beenvery
busy.‘‘It’s crazy, quite frankly,’’
Kevin said.
The closingdown sale willrun until
February 5at8pm when the last
video rental store in the district

Kevin, whohas owned United
Videosince November 1999 and
workedalongside Lynn Arthur in
store for nearly 20 years, was
reluctantly closing as it was no longer
viable.
Manypeople got used to other ways
of watching movies usingonline
streaming sites or television’s on
demand platformsover lockdown, he
said. Andwhiletheycamebackfor a
shorttime,itdidn’t last and
customers had drifted away.
‘‘We’re very reluctant to let it go,’’
he said.
Kevin bought the business from
brothers Paul andDavidTaylor.
But it wasbusinessman Alister
Lilley whobrought UnitedVideo to
Ashburton morethan 35 years ago.
United Video has hadfoursites
since being in town, either on Cassor
Tancredstreets.

growing up over theyears, Lynn said.
It made thepast few days especially
tough for both Kevin and Lynn as they
dealt withthe sale of items and looked
to their respective futures.
Kevin already works ANZCO
security but Lynn was now actively
looking forwork after 21 years at
United Video.
She also worked for twoyears with
the Taylor brothers.
Wheels Week stages 2021 comeback

spectacle WheelsWeek.
The event didnot happen last year
becauseofcovid and organisers are
keentoput the wheels in motion for
this year’s event.

traditional and busyswapmeet in
Tinwald on May 1.
The meetmay well featurea
different layout this yearand could

Pews have been replaced with chairs at St
David’s Church in Allenton andthere’s adozen
or more for sale.
The four­metre long pews havebeen apart of
thechurch furniture foraround 50 years and are
made of rimu and featurevinyl­covered squabs.
Some 27 pews have been removed from the
main churcharea. Half of them hadtubular
heaters fitted underneath and those have been
removed and are for sale separately.
Some 180 chairs have been purchased at acost
of around$100each to replacethe pews
St David’s Church property convener Carl
Ruddenklau said anumber of pews hadsold
already.
At $100 each they werevery good value and
were well made.
He said some people hadfound them too long
to take homeand some were shortening them.
Mr Ruddenklau saidheintended taking a
pew. along to theAshburton MenzShed, where
he was amember, and would have it reduced in
size beforeoffering it forsale.
Allpew sale proceeds would be used to part
offset thecost of the newchairs.
Mr Ruddenklausaid the congregation had
held avotebefore deciding to replace the pews
with chairs.
He personally hadbeenagainst the change, in
part because of thecostinvolved, but the new
chairs were comfortable and had been well
received. Each chair has arackthat can hold a
bible or hymn sheets.
Mr Ruddenklausaid the chairs gave the
church more flexibility with using the
worshipping space.
New carpetand improved technology had also
been recently added.
He said the church had amore modern look
and was well­placed for meeting the future
needs of parishioners.

Big scrutiny
on hefty
rate rise
AshburtonDistrict ratepayers could be
staring down the barrell of an 8.27 per cent
rate increase for the 2021­22financial year.
Staff and councillors havejust begun work
on theirlong termplan (2021­2031)and have
beengoing through budgets and work
programmestosee whattheycan alterto
bringthe raterise down.
They havealreadyidentified using forestry
andpropertyreserves built up overthe
decadestosmooth outratespikes overthe
nexttwo years.
Uncertainty because of covid meant
council droppedits 4.88 rate rise for 2020­21
to 2.56 per centbut that hasputpressure on
the rates requirement for 2021­22, year one of
the long termplan (LTP).Yeartwo could see
ratesrisefurther, by up to 10 per cent.
Butusing$400,000 of financial reserves
could reduce the rate hikebyone per cent.
While$38 million is to be collected in rates
this financial year, the draft planseesthat
rise to $41.2min2021­22and $44.1m the
following year.
About70per centofcouncil’s revenue
comes fromrates andfeesand charges,which
will also likely risebytwo percent. Its biggest
expense is roadingand transportation, which
makes up 22 percent of its spending.
MayorNeilBrown saidthe district hadto
live within itsmeans and not use its financial
reservesunlessabsolutely necessary.
He saidultimately the budget was not
council’s but the community’s and people
should have their say.
Cr Leen Braamsaid he wasn’t keen to sell
off any ‘‘silverware’’ to alleviate short­term
rate pain butCrStuart Wilsonsupported the
selling of Glasgow lease land to raiseincome.
He saidcouncil could well find itself
amalgamated intosome bigger authority in
the future,orhaveits drinking water and
sewage assets taken over by government.
‘‘In thelast 15 yearswehave brought the
district up to ahigh leveland kept rates
reasonable through prudentuse. Ithink we
should use someofour Glasgow lease capital
to keeprates atareasonable level.’’
Business manager Paul Brakesaid council
did have the opportunity to increase the use
of property sales in the short term.Inthe
current year,Glasgow leasesalesof$848,000
had beenused to offset rates.
Council has about 80 Glasgowleases, on
residentialand ruralproperties.
Councillors also talked aboutthe futureof
Balmoral Hall, whichneedsabout$500,000
spent on it to bringituptoscratch.
The draft LTPwill go outsoonfor public
consultation, withsuggestedspending;
councillorswill then hear submissionsabout
whatpeoplewouldlike to be cut or added,
and afinalplan will be adopted in late June.
Budgetdiscussionsare planned to continue
into nextweek.

Retiredfarmer and formermechanic
Les Nellstarted working after school
for Burnetts Motors Ltd in 1952.He
was 13 years old and started in the
workshop of Ashburton Implement
Services (AIS).
AIS was the InternationalHarvest
Company franchise taken on by
Burnetts’ founder Bob Burnett in
1951. It was basedatSouth Street.
Now in his 80s,MrNell was among
the hundreds of former Burnetts
transport and motor company staff
who turneduptoacatch up event at
Ashburton Racecourse on Saturday.
Morethan 250 people, including
partners, registered to attend.
Among them Adrienne Francis,the
daughter of founder Bob Burnett, and
Kevin Prue and Bill Robinson who
both worked for the company for
more than 40 years.
Theyboth did driving duties which
included carting grain, collecting
steel from Christchurch, and general
freight. However the companyalso
helpedshape the district with
workers doingroading, kerbing and
channelling work in newly created
subdivisions of the time.

It was an excellentcompany to
workfor and some days were better
than others, Mr Robinsonsaid.
But even now at aged 78, he said he
would do it all again tomorrow if he
could.
The companywas started by Bob
Burnett in 1927, and was one of Mid
Canterbury’s biggest employers in its
time;inits heydaynearly300 staff
wereemployed and the companyhad
morethan 100 vehicles.
It offered arange of transport
services includingcarting of goods, a
workshop and transport depot,petrol
pumps, earthmoving with bulldozers,
scrapers, loaders and other heavy
machinery.
Mr Burnett also owned acoal mine
and ahigh country station. He
remained acompany directorduring
several ownership changes until his
retirement in 1981,atage 72.
During Mr Nell’s timeatAIS, it
moved to asite along East Street
(around where Repco sits now).
It reinforced his appreciation of
the workingsofmachinery, which has
lasted alifetime.
He has alove of John Deeres which
spannedfrom his youth living along
the road from the dairy factoryat
Staveley.
Mr Nellhas since spent manyyears
since collecting them;some restored,
some not.
Amonghis tasks at AIS he did spare
part deliveries, with some sales, and
put part numbers on the bins.
He also workedthe petrol pump
site and helped withinvoicing in the
office. He was earning two pound a
week.
He became an apprentice
mechanic at Bailey's in Ashburton
and worked as mechanic for Burnetts
Motors Autolines from 1957 until he
got a‘‘doseoffumes’’ and had to leave
in 1959.
After leaving Burnetts, Mr Nell
took jobs working on farms and also
worked with an engineer who created
the first hydraulicpostdriver.
He eventually set up his own
workshop in Hororata, aptly called
Nells Workshop, and had his own
farm paradise at Te Pirita before
retiring to Barrhill.

saystime is against American
Magic as theypull out all stops
to get their America’s Cup
campaign back on the water.
And Peter is defending
American Magic skipper Dean
Barker,saying asudden gustof
windturnedthe final leg of
Sunday’s race against Luna
Rossa into the equivalent of a
Formula Onecrash.
Theinnovative kitemaker is
passionately followingthe
challenger andcup series in
Auckland, knowingfirst­hand
that boat design and
technology has resulted in
yachts racing at thevery edge
of control.
His son Robert was a
development engineerfor
Team New Zealand in 2003;
that samecampaign Peter’s
kite company wasasked to
build akite spinnaker for the
mono­hulled yachts racing in
the Hauraki Gulffor the31st
campaign.
The35th campaign in
Bermuda saw twin­hulled
catamarans and in this 36th
campaign the yachts are
Crew of American Magic’s Patriot after the boat capsized.

Petersaid abig hole on the

had dislodgedand fallen
throughthe bottom.
The sailingcommunity and
AM fans all around theworld
have been discussing events
leading to the capsize, some
critical of the skipper’s
decisions.
But Petersaid thedirection
of the breeze gave them little
choice,ifthey weretoprotect
their preferredside of the
course.
He says it is unlikely the
Americans willbeable to
repair theirboat Patriot for
racing on Friday, butthey
would probably be ready for
semi­finalracing on January
29.
But while repairing theboat,
the crew would be unable to
practise and develop on the
water.
‘‘Itisdevastating for the
Americans.’’
The lackoftimeonwater,
and repairsthat could add
weighttothe boat, putPatriot
at adisadvantage.
Peter said the team had
resources that gave it the best
chancepossible of makinga
comeback. Team New
Zealand,afterall,won thecup
after spectacularlycapsizing
in thechallenger seriesin
Bermuda.
‘‘The boats areincredible. It
has putyachtingon adifferent
plane.Itused to be like
watching paint dry or grass
grow. It is now like watching
Formula One, particularly
with crasheslike Sunday’s.’’
Big CBD bough snaps off in wind
Strong winds snapped off a
huge bough from an oak tree in
central Ashburton on Tuesday
and left some people without
power for averyshort period.
Awind gust at around
12.30pm felled thebranch of an
old oakinfrontofthe Balmoral
Hall on Cass Street.
There was no damage to
property or cars.
The hefty 25m long branch
fell to the south and grazed the
nearby wall of theadjacent
property formerly used by
Winz.
Jill Newton was working
across the road in the
Salvation Army offices and
said sheheard the‘‘huge
crash’’ of thebranch.
The Police and traffic
management arrived soon
afterwards to cone around the
hazard.

manager BrendonQuinn said
the wind hadnot been too bad
around thedistrict.
Afallen branch had resulted
in afault that tookout the
power to around 5000
customers on the north and
west sideofAshburton for
about 10 minutes at around
11.30am.

raised so far to buy its new
home on Havelock Street.
Thegroup hasatarget of
$500,000 andhas been the
recipient of twobig grants
totalling $250,000; the resthas
come from 20 foundation
members and people donating
to its legacy tree.

Mackle said she had been
humbledbydonations so far.
She said thelegacy tree was amural that
would be apermanent acknowledgementof
the generosity of thecommunity.
People who donate $200 or more will have
anamed leafonthe tree,which can also be
in memory of aloved one.

display at hospice.’’

was notable to run planned fundraisers last

Afundraiser underway next week on East
Street is apop­up shop selling clothing,
homewares, furniture and other items.
‘‘We’re turning second hand goods into
first class care.’’
The pop­up shop, next to PaperPlus, will
be open Monday to Friday from 11am to 3pm.

Methodist project runs to plan

Work on renovating and
extending the Methodist
churchonBaring Square is
going well and the project is set
for aSeptember completion
date.
The$3million project will
see the churchstrengthened,
repairedandanew extension
added on the southside.
Workbegan in September
last year andisbeing carried
out by local businessMcIntosh
Construction.
Project manager Hayley
Grovessaid the project was on
programme and wouldsee the
churchbeingused from
October.
Strengthening workwas now
almost complete, buthad not
beenwithout its challenges.
Thecontractor had found a
second hidden floor in the main
churchand had neededto
removeit.
‘‘There was aflat floor
originallyinthechurch,but a
sloping floor had been added
on top, which nobodyreally
knew about,’’ Mrs Groves said.
Shesaid atimecapsule in the
churchwould be relocated, but
not before new items, including
documentation, putinit.
Workonthe main churchand
on the extension wouldfinish
in parallel becausethey were
intrinsically linked and
featured internal doorwaysand
the samefireand mechanical

Indian festival of colour expands

Abiggerand more colourfulcelebration of
Holi, or FestivalofColours, is on the cards
in Ashburton on February 20.
The third annual event is organisedby
the AshburtonIndian Multicultural
Charitable Trust with support fromthe
Ashburton District Council andisfamilyfocused.
It will be heldnear the paddling pool
area of AshburtonDomain.
Event co­ordinator SilkySharma said
the festival wasset to draw Hindusfrom
the wider Canterbury region and everyone
was invitedtoenjoythe festivities.
Holiwas an ancient Hindu festival, but
the Ashburtonevent was also an
opportunity to learnabout different
cultures and aimed atspreading peace
and happiness by givingmessages of
forgiveness andtogetherness.
The festivalwould feature Indianand
other food stalls and an entertainment
line­up that included dancers, singers and
music,Mrs Sharma said.
There would be Hinduperformers and
also performersfrom other cultures.
Bright colours wouldaboundand
canons would be used to shoot out flowers
andcoloured powders into the crowd.
Henna tattooing and facepainting stalls
would also be set up as part of thefestival,
she said.
Packs of coloured powderswill be
available for purchase on the day andthe
ritual throwing of colourisencouraged.
Entry to the Festival of Colours is free
and the event runs from 11am until 3pm.

Actors and dancers from the
Royal New Zealand Ballet and
an ensemble from the New
Zealand Symphony Orchestra
will present Setting Up Camp,
The Soldiers Tale at Ashburton
Trust Event Centre on March 7.
The show is aclassic tale of
magic, desire and being careful
of what you wish for.
Composed in 1918, The
Soldier’s Tale’s first tour was
cut short by the Spanish flu but
it has remained aperennially
popular work since.
Written “to be read, played
and danced”, it tells the story of
the titular soldier who makes a
deal with the devil, who in
exchange for the soldier’s
magic violin, will grant his
every wish.
The work is based on a
Russian folk tale and was cocreated
with Swiss writer CF
Ramuz and gave Stravinsky the
chance to display and include
all of his favourite musical
influences.
They include tango, waltz,
ragtime, Jewish klezmer,
church chorales, and the
Spanish paso doble.
The March 7Ashburton show
is on at 2pm. Tickets cost $30 for
adults, $15 for children, plus

Big investment in seed dressing plant

It’s involved ahigh­tech
German­made Petkus seed
dressing plant,international
border exemptions anda
dedicated team of people
working to getcutting­edge
technology up and runningin
Ashburton in time for harvest
season.
Luisetti Seeds production
director Vincent Luisetti said
the new plantwas the first of its
kind in New Zealand and oneof
the biggest globally outsideof
the United States.
It will process ryegrass,
fescue, cocksfoot and cereals
and give Luisetticlients, many
of whom wereinEuropean
markets, abetter quality
product,put more moneyinthe
growers’ pocketand offer
customer satisfaction on
deliverytimes internationally
and within New Zealand, Mr
Luisettisaid.
Fourand ahalf thousand
extra tonne had been grown
with the new plant in mind.
It was expected to be
operational this week.
Theplant, which involves a
seed cleaning, treatingand
packing productionline, was
capable of processing three and
ahalf tonne of ryegrass per
hourand morethan 20 tonne an
hourof grain. Existing
machineryprocessed around a
tonneanhour.
Thecereal packer has been
set at 10 tonne/hourto allow
stafftosafely keep up with the
semi­automated packer.
Theprocess has been two and
ahalf years in theplanning,
from design to reality.
Thecompany, with officesin
Ashburton and Rangiora, saw
the investment as acompetitive
edge in ahighly competitive
industry. It warranted Mr
Luisetti and operations
manager Mark Frampton
travelling to Germanyin2019to
view seedcleaning equipment
optionsfor the Ashburton site.
Mid Canterbury was
considered the heart of New
Zealand’s seed and grain
industry and Ashburton has at
least sevencompeting seed
cleaning companies, not
including independentgrowers

engineer GuildoWallstien, of
Germany,and technology

help with installation.
Mr Wallstien has since
returned to Germanybut Mr
Cook wasstillinAshburton
overseeing the finalsetup
process helped by local tradies
from Laser Electrical
Ashburton.
Other support came from
contractorCalder Stewart
Ashburton, Ashburton
Engineering Ltd and engineers
from JP Marshall of Te Rapa.
The support from local
tradesmen during theprocess
had beeninvaluable, Mr
Luisetti said.
Theirinput had helpedkeep
the installation on track for the
start of theseason especially
when delivery,initially set up
to be staggered as required for
the installation,was thrown by
Covid­19.
Eleven 44­foot containers
arrived at the DobsonStreet
yard in Ashburton on the same
day and all neededtobe
unpackedand returned to
prevent additional costs, Mr
Luisettisaid.
Adding to the deliverychaos
was the presence of staff from
Ministry of Primary Industries
on site to inspect the load.
There had since been afew
minorinstallationissues to sort
butfor the most part it had gone
smoothly, Mr Luisettisaid.
Theplant was fully
automated and had Wi­Fi
connection withcameras to
allow staff to seeproduct flow
and production from anywhere
in the world.
Last week testing on the plant
in Ashburton was done
remotely by engineers in
Germany.
Otherfeatures include aprecleaner
with up to 380 different
sized integrated riddle
scrappersable foruse and the
latest technology in double
head separating. It usesan
18­horsepower motor which
cansplit double heads, a
particular probleminturf

There was also aseparate
treatingand bagging facility,
which was operated

bulk one­tonne bags to be filled
at the sametime and taken
away by forklift on adouble
pallet.
There was also adust
collectionand management
systemand aspecially designed
clean down feature to minimise
thetime neededfor clean down
andprevent contamination
between lines.

Making summer
unstoppable
We’ve faced some unreal
challenges in the past 12 months.
But time and again our team of
five million has come together in
ashow of kindness and
resilience.
Now we find ourselves
relatively well off. Every New
Zealander should feel proud of
how far we’ve come together this
year.
Iwant to thank the people here
in Mid Canterbury. It’s a
privilege to be your local MP.
Your compassion during
lockdown and your
conversations with me on the
campaign trail make me
determined to effect positive
change in our community.
On Christmas Eve Day Igot to
see that compassion and
community spirit first hand, as
my husband Matt and I
volunteered at the Ashburton
Community Christmas Dinner,
setting up the tables and helping
to get everything just right for
the attendees the following day.
It was not lost on me that we
were lucky to even have such a
dinner in these covid times –
with London and other parts of
the UK being plunged into anew
lockdown just before Christmas,
meaning that they were unable
to travel to spend the day with
their families.
The photos from the Ashburton
dinner are incredible –huge
smiles, happiness and joy exude
from the images. When attending
the Timaru Christmas Dinner
and seeing families, friends, and
strangers alike, all congregating
together to celebrate, Ifelt
humbled and lucky to be aNew
Zealander.
As we spend our days out and
about enjoying the sunshine,
attending local family fishing
competitions, camping at the
lakes and attending festivals
with no restrictions –Ithink it is
easy to forget just how lucky we
are.
The Government is getting on
with the job of guiding New
Zealand through these tough
times. We remain committed to
keeping New Zealanders safe
from covid, accelerating our
economic recovery, and tackling
some of our biggest long­term
challenges.
Parliament is still adjourned,
but our covid response doesn’t
stop. We’ve got arobust plan to
keep New Zealanders safe this
summer –and everyone has a
role to play. Little things like
staying home if we’re sick and
keeping track of where we go can
protect us from the virus.
This summer should also be
time for aproper break. Let’s
make the most of the warmer
months ahead and explore our
own backyard, while doing all
the little things we know protect
us from covid.
Keep using the tracer app, stay
home if you are sick, and keep
washing your hands. Together
we can make summer
unstoppable.
TimeBank seeks
new co-ordinator
Mid CanterburyTimeBank is
after anew co­ordinator to run
its day­to­day operations andto
support people to connect with
others.
Run throughthe Connecting
Mid CanterburyCharitable
Trust, TimeBank and the
Learning Exchange, which
encourages people to share their
skills, knowledge andpassionin
the deliveryofinformative
workshops,have grown steadily
in thedistrict sincetheystarted
in 2017.
The trustreceived aone­off
grant in December fromthe
Lotteries Covid 19 Community
Wellbeing Fund, which has
enabled it to increase paid
staffinghours from 20 to 40 per
week.
The co­ordinator role is for 25
hours aweek.
Mid Canterbury TimeBank
founder Kate White said the coordinator
would support people
to get startedand to getthe most
out of being amember.
It had beenimpossible to run
TimeBank and the Learning
Exchange in 20 hours, shesaid.
The new co­ordinator would
now be able to follow up with
members, be more proactiveand
get more volunteers involved in
supporting new members.
‘‘It was great to receive the one
yearfunding, which
acknowledgesthe initiatives we

Research paper documents
Canterbury coastal erosion
An international team of
scientists from Malta, Germany,
Romania, NewZealand and the
USA has useddrones and
satellite imagery to monitor a
stretch of coastline near
Ashburton andfound that
gullies up to 30m in length can
develop in less than aweek.
The findings show that
groundwater flow and seepage
can form large gullies along
coastal cliffs in amatter of days
and are outlinedinarecently
publishedresearch paper.
The study area wasa2.5km
long stretch of cultivated
coastline 16km to thesoutheast
of Ashburton.
The coastline within the
study area consists of a15–20m
thick exposure of poorly sorted
and uncemented matrixsupported
outwash gravel,
capped by up to 1m of postglacial
loess andmodern soil.
The cliff face is punctuated
by thick lenses of sand or clean
gravel.
Field observations and
numerical models show that
groundwater plays akey role in
forming these gullies, by either
eroding tunnels or triggering
landslides.
Some 315 gullies, also known
as dongas, weremapped along
Crumbling coastal cliffs at Ashton Beach in Mid Canterbury.

are located between the Rakaia
and Rangitata rivers,

coastal hazard and their

When and where coastal
gullies form can be partly
predicted, says the study,
which shows gullies are formed
when more than 40mm of rain
falls per dayand preferentially
located above buried, old river
channels.

AshburtonGolf Club’sannual
shootout on Sunday.
Bruce wonthe shootout three
years ago and is the only
previouswinner in this year’s
field.
All19start at the first tee,
with the bottomplayer
dropping out each holeuntil
one remains. Whenscores are
tied, achip­off or putt­off
decideswho does not progress.
Theshootout is in its 11th
year andBruce said nerves
were always highatthe first
tee­offbut the trick wastoplay
steady golf. ‘‘Itisabout being
not last, especiallyinthe first
nine.’’
He saidthere wereplenty of
new contenders, including
father andson Pete andDave
Morrison, and youngster Blair
Snowball, as well as players
with plenty of experience.He
rates Bev Chinn as most likely
to succeed.
Bruce took up golf asan
adult, initially playing as a
right­hander; his handicap
improved dramatically when he
switched to playing left­handed
(ambidexterity runs in the
family).
After retiring from hisjob at
RMF Silva, he now plays three
times aweekand golfs all
around the country whenhe
gets achance.
He’s had ahole in one at
Kelvin Heights andrates
Wairakei near Rotorua as the
nicestcourse he’s played on.
The hardest has beenJack’s
Point.
He counts winning the
shootout previously and being
intermediate championthis
year as golfing highlights.

1534 bad recyclers on list
Some 1534 households areonthe
Ashburton District Council’s watch
list of bad recyclers.
Another 293 are on asecond
warning and 92 binshave been
removed since council began
monitoring recycling last August.
Infrastructure services group
manager Neil McCann said five bins
had been returned to households
after education.New rulesaround
plastics mean council will only
collect 1, 2and 5; no lids of any size
are allowed.
Households persistently breaking
the rules have been warned or lost
their binsbecause their bad
recycling had contaminated truck
loads.
Mr McCann said it hadbeen abig
adjustment, but efforts to clean up
its recycling has gone from strength
to strength with recent reports
showing contamination stayed
exceptionally low over the
Christmas period.
The district reported just 4per
centcontaminationinits recycling
at the Christchurch sorting centre
overthe holidays, afigure which
ensured thatthe materials could be
processed andnot rejected to
landfill.
Mr McCann said the results
reflected how hard residents have
beenworking overthe past six
months.
‘‘It hasn't just been about getting
the plastic recycling right either:
there's been abig emphasis on the
need to keep lids and general
rubbish out of the yellowbinstoo
andresidents havebeen very
responsive to this.’’
In August, the council began
auditing recycling binsbefore
collection to help educate residents
about what materials can and can't
go in the yellow bins. Theyalso
updated the Bin it Right rubbish and
recycling handbook.
In October, November and
December, contamination levels
wereall below 5per cent.

Dairy prices
continue
to rise
The strong start to 2021 for
dairy prices in the Global Dairy
Trade auctioncontinued this
week, witha4.8per cent lift
across the board.
The increase is the fifth in a
row and falls hot on the heels of
3.9 per cent earlierthis month.
Farmers willbepleased
whole milk powder priceswhich
have the greatestbearing
on Fonterra's farmgate milk
price ­rose 2.2 per centto
US$3380/MT.
Meanwhile skim milkpowder
­the second biggest
‘‘reference’’ productfor
Fonterra, jumped7.0per cent
to an averageUS$3243/MT.
But it was anhydrousmilk fat,
withadecent amount of
product on offer, showing the
biggest increase of 17.2 per cent
to an average US$5398/MT.
Results forother main
commoditygroups included a
rise of 6.6 per cent to an average
US$1173/MT for lactose,while
butter increased by 4.4 percent
to an average US$4735/MT.
Cheddar wasthe onlyproduct

Residents praised forclean Christmas recycling Majority of
It's been a big adjustment, but Mid
Canterbury's efforts to clean up its
recycling has gone from strength to
strength with recent reports showing
contamination stayedexceptionallylow
overthe Christmas period.
The district reported just 4 per cent
contamination in its recycling at the
Christchurch sorting centre over the
holidays, afigurewhichensured that the
materials could be processed and not
rejected to landfill.
Council Infrastructure Services Group
Manager Neil McCann says the results are
an outstanding reflection of how hard
residents have been working these past
six months.
"We arethrilled to see these greatfigures,
especially at atime of year wherethere's
lots of gift and food packaging to sort and
dispose of.

"It hasn't just been about getting the
plasticrecyclingrighteither:there'sbeena
big emphasis on the need to keep lids and
general rubbish out of the yellow bins too

In August, the Council began auditing
recycling bins before collection to help
educate residents about what materials
can and can't go in the yellow bins.
Coupled with an updated 'Bin it Right'
rubbish and recycling handbook, the
exercise has proved invaluableatreigning
in the district'scontamination levels.
For the months of October, November
and December, Mid Canterbury recorded
contamination levels below5per cent,the
lowest being just 2.5 per cent in October.

began restricting how much rubbish
it would accept in the recycling itwas
sent, Mid Canterbury had abig task
ahead of it to get its contamination
levelsdown.
Datanowshowsthatthe
successful transition
to less than 5per cent
contamination has
been a district-wide
achievement that the
overwhelming majority of households
have contributedto.
More than 11,200
households receive
the district's kerbside
collection service and
83 per cent arecorrectly
sorting what goes into
their yellow bins.
Since Council
began auditing the bins in
August 2020, just 13.5 per
cent areonits watch-list for
incorrect sorting, while 293
properties areontotheir second
warning.
Less than 1 per cent of
houses (92) have had their
recycling bins removed
and five of those have since
been returned.
NEW FOOTPATHS STARTON
EASTSTREET
CBDupgradesinAshburtonhave been
continuing up EastStreetthisweek,with
contractorsworkinginthe TancredStreet
intersectioninstallingstormwater pipes and
building thefootpath/cyclewayonthe green
belt south of MooreStreet.
On Monday (25January) underground work
on East Streetwillmove to the Burnett Street
intersection before shifting to Havelock Street
on Thursday (28January).
Driversare askedtotravelwith care as these
intersectionswillbestop/go while the workis
carried out.
UpgradesonTancred Streetare expected
to finish by theend of theJanuary,with the
last of foothpath pavingand streetmarking

is urging residentstokeep their bales on
their own side of the fenceastheycan be

Infrastructure Services Group Manager,

receives reports of the illegal activity
happening and this season has been no

bales often encroaching on the roadway
where they can obstruct driver vision or
get hit,but in some cases the bales have
been getting wrapped and prepared on
the road itself which is veryunsafe.
"If you areinthe roadway stacking these
heavybales, you could be taking averybig
risk withyour own or someone else's life.
Please keep bales on your property."

Darracq restored to immaculate best

Gavin Hunt’s restored1903Darracqrepresented
stateofthe arttechnology in its day andit’s still
an eye­catcher.
Thecar was boughtmany yearsago by his
grandfather and later passedtohis father.
It sat around wrecked and in bits for along
time beforeGavin took on the big restoration
project, which took two yearstocomplete.
Theproject was well advancedwhen he took
hisfather for aspininitonhis 100th birthday.
Thetwo seater beauty has asingle cylinder,
8hpengine andhas ahandcrankstart.
The engineislubricated by means of ahand
pump which has to be operatedevery few
kilometres.
‘‘Every 12 miles or 10 minutes of driving you
have to pump in oil from the three litre tank.
‘‘I operate on the cautiousside because Idon’t
wanther seizingup,’’ said Gavin.
TheDarracq has atop speed of 26mph and
steeper hills need to be tackled in firstgear.
Gavinsaid the car originally had no lights.
Thefront lightsburned acetyleneand the side
andrear lights burnt oilonoriginal latermodels.
He hadsourcedtwo dummy headlights anda
tail light at the Winchester Swap Meet and didn’t
need to drive at nightanyway.
The car has anew gearboxand other parts
sourced by Gavin,who is afitter and turner by
trade and ran hisown engineering business
before retirement.
Thewoodwork on the Darracq was carried out
by friend Harry Bremner and there’s anew
bonnet andnew wheels made in Feilding.
Thecar is painted in Ashburton Red,the same
colour found on an original spring, and it looks
immaculate.
Gavinand wife Annette first took it foraspin
to anational veterancar rally in Nelsonfour
years agoand typically attend six rallies ayear.
Their latestouting was the 66th Dunedin to
Brighton Veteran Car Rallyheldlast weekend.
Around 40 vehicles,all pre 1918, took part in
therally, including the cadillacs of Methven’s
Andrew Sim and Ashburton’s Rob Ross.
TheHunt’s Darracq wasthe second oldest car
at therally and it wastheir third time taking
part.
Thecar has beenchristenedMarmaduke, the
middle name of Gavin’s grandfather.
His latest workshopprojectisthe restoration
of a1946 jeep. Otherprojects are lined up after
that.

Corollawagonis tidy ride

Motoring writer
Toyota’s top­selling Corolla range receives a
welcome injection of versatility and style with
the arrival of asleek­looking update of one of
New Zealand’s favourite small wagons.
This champion compact wagon has awellproven
track record for reliability spanning
more than 45 years. This latest model is a
desirable and sophisticated wagon, with solid
performance credentials, along with tidy ride
and handling. It’s amassive leap forward over
its decidedly ordinary predecessor, which was
aJapanese domestic market model.
Being the only country outside of Japan
where this model was sold did come with a
number of compromises. Heading the list was
an ageing and lethargic 80kw 1.5 litre engine
hitched to adroning Constant Variable
Transmission (CVT). However for all its flaws,
it still sold in decent numbers mainly to fleet
operators, more interested in price, load
carrying and low running costs, which this
vehicle offered in spades.
The cabin has had acomplete redesign with
newly developed fabric seats, and smart key
entry with push button start. This wagon
earned bragging rights by being the first
Toyota to arrive in New Zealand with Apple
CarPlay® and Android AutoTM all accessed
via anew 7inch touchscreen. Only one model
in entry­level GX trim is offered and retails
for acompetitive $29,995 for awell­equipped
compact wagon. Making it on to the list of
standard equipment is asmallish 4.2­inch
touchscreen display, air­conditioning, heated
exterior mirrors and modest four­speaker
audio system.
The 103kw 1.8­litre motor is more enjoyable
and responsive to drive than the old school
80kw 1.5 litre motor that toiled in the previous
model, and noticeably smoother and quieter.
While throttle response is stronger off the
mark, mid rev range acceleration is adequate
and trails some of the newer feistier engine
motors in this market segment.
This motor has in various forms served
three generations of Corollas and remains as
solid and dependable as ever, and can
produce arespectable turn of pace for hill
climbing in scooting effortlessly past slower
moving traffic.
Aseven­speed CVT automatic provides a
seamless but rather sterile gear shifting
experience. Toyota has attempted to address
this issue with anew dynamic shift featuring
agear and belt drive system to improve
transmission performance in the lower ratios,
where belt efficiency isn’t great.

starts, generating stronger acceleration, and
minimising the irritating momentary
sluggishness off the mark that characterises
many CVT gearboxes.
Like the Corolla hatch, space for rear seat
occupants is snug with limited head and
legroom. The rear cargo compartment is
better although at best adequate rather than a
commodious load carrier.
There are plenty of pointers that this is
indeed abudget­priced model. Perhaps the
most obvious being the button sized 15­inch
wheels and complete with down market
plastic wheel trims. Most entry­level
passenger vehicles sold here these days at
least ride on alloy wheels to try to mask their
economy car roots.
It does earn some kudos by offering push
button engine start and headlights that
automatically dip at night for on­coming
traffic. Toyota’s excellent Safety Sense
technology package is standard with
impressive pedestrian and cyclist detection
capabilities and all speed dynamic radar
cruise control. Handling is avast
improvement on the wagon it replaces. Being
aJapanese domestic market model, and while
good, it doesn’t feel as crisp or responsive as
its hatch sibling over twisty terrain. Generally,
the suspension reacts quickly to sudden and
unexpected changes in direction by the
driver, or those triggered by anasty piece of
road surface.
Less engaging steering than what’s on offer
in the Corolla hatch reflects the fact that the
wagon is tuned for the Japanese market,
where drivers tend to like less assertive
steering. While both the handling and steering
of the wagon lack the cut and thrust of other
Corolla derivatives sold here, it has
undeniable appeal with its great looks,
versatility and affordability.

The Governmentspent$410,000 on exterior
painting, drivewaysafety, roofing and
fencing in 192 state homesinthe Ashburton
district in the last financial year.
Thehomes areoperated by Kainga Ora
(HousingNZ) and the agency spends around
$500 million annually on maintenance and
improvements to about66,300 homes
around the country.
In the south Christchurch and southern
area, another$8.2m will be spent thisyear
on exteriorpainting, driveway safety,
roofing andfencing.
Where thereare young children under 5,
the home will get asecureplay area aspart
of the driveway safety programme.
The planned work in Otago, Southland
and South Canterbury will also provide
additional work for tradesalready involved
in maintaining state homes in those regions.

representative (ideally

Superliquor Ashburton is seeking to hire a
new staff member to work in our busy bottle
store in Ashburton.
Therole:
• Inwards good receipting, unpacking and
stocking of both warehouse and retail store
shelves
• Some retail work in-store (serving customers,
and working at the check-out)
• Able todeliver exceptional customer service
experience while monitoring and upholding
the store’s legal obligations with respect to
the sales of alcohol legislation
• The applicant will require the highestlevelof
honesty and integrity alongside ateam spirit
supporting rostered shifts across days,nights
and weekends.
What are we looking for?
• Ideally, some previous experienceworking in
retail or hospitality environments
• Duty Manager and current liquor control
qualification, or be willing to obtain these
promptly
• Energetic, and physically fit (as you will be
required to unpack, lift, move and stock
shelves in warehouse and retail store)
• Understand principles of stock control, and
rotating of stock through retail store (or be
willing to learn)
• Able tooperate aforklift (with appropriate
experience orqualification)
• Good communication skills, with apassion
for customer service
• A team player who can work with minimal
supervision
• Anappreciationofwine, spirits and beer and
ageneral understanding of the industry
• We also require your commitment in upskilling
your knowledge
