W&M Studio for Teaching & Learning Innovation // 2019 - 2020 Annual Report

The Studio for Teaching & Learning Innovation was established in 2019 to break through disciplinary silos, adopt appropriate new technologies, and more strongly connect with and lead colleagues across the university to advance teaching excellence. Our desire to connect, collaborate, and serve as a hub for instructors, co-educators, and students alike pushes us daily to serve our community in responsive and strategic ways.

Pandemic Partnership Highlights

W&M Libraries & Information Technology

As the university transitioned to remote learning, STLI,

W&M Libraries, and IT developed the Keep Teaching

Initiative which encompassed robust levels of supports

and resources. The Keep Teaching website housed

guides, tutorials, and best practices. Members from

each team facilitated webinars and tutorials to help with

technology and pedagogical issues.

Center for Mindfulness & Authentic Excellence

In an effort to prioritize mental health during the

pandemic, STLI and Associate Vice President for Health

& Wellness Kelly Crace worked together to reconfigure

the second workshop in the Spring series: “Am I My

Student’s Therapist: Managing Student Anxiety While

we Adjust” via Zoom. During the workshop, Crace

discussed teaching and management of student anxiety.

Dean of Students Office

The studio partnered with Senior Associate Dean of

Students Dave Gilbert to host the last Spring workshop:

“Maintaining Academic Integrity in Extraordinary

Times,” providing instructors with best practices to

encourage integrity and prevent academic dishonesty.

STLI and DoS developed a student feedback survey for

faculty to deploy and a university-wide student survey.

COVID-19 RESPONSE

AT A GLANCE

STLI has developed two courses

[Convert your Course // Blended

Learning @ W&M Course], numerous

video tutorials and webinars, and

an instructional resilience website

[Keep Teaching Initiative] dedicated

to preparing faculty for teaching in

dramatically different environments.

Through the synergy between ondemand

resources and consultations,

self-paced learning opportunities were

provided. The studio has been able to

nimbly provide support and resources

to a significant proportion of instructors

across W&M.
