February 2021
HelloWelcome to The Garage
Welcome to the latest issue of The
Garage, the first since the country has
entered Lockdown 3. How are you all
finding it? I imagine you’re like the majority of
workshops in the UK; staying open and providing
a service to your customers whilst trying to
remain safe. It’s extremely difficult trying to
find the right balance. We would love to hear
any thoughts and experiences you have on the
situation. Email me about this or any other side
of the industry at the email below and we’ll print
it in the magazine.
‘Under the Spotlight’ this month has spoken
to Fred Henderson. Fred has worked in the
automotive world for over 60 years so it was
interesting to hear his opinions on the industry
and how it has changed. The article focuses on
his motorsport recovery work which he helped
develop.
Finally now Brexit is finally with us, Professor
David Bailey takes a look at what it may mean
for the industry – the deal may well have been
signed but what are the hidden issues waiting
around the corner?
NEWS
Independent garages’ interest in diagnostics
revealed by LKQ Euro Car Parts campaign
LKQ Euro Car Parts has analysed the
customer response to its recent garage
services campaign, to identify a particular
appetite for content on diagnostics.
The campaign was designed to help
independent garages increase
revenue and boost customer
retention and satisfaction, by offering
a complete service offering and
guaranteeing a ‘first time fix’.
As well as diagnostics, content covered
the revenue opportunities associated with
ADAS, air conditioning, carbon cleaning,
tyre and wheel balancing, wheel alignment
and hybrid and electric.
Colin Cottrell, marketing and central
operations director at LKQ Euro Car Parts,
said: “Our customers are quite right to be
prioritising diagnostics – especially when
their customers’ vehicles might have been
sitting idle for much of this year, which
can mask the cause of certain issues.
“Having the right diagnostic tools can
help garages to quickly and accurately
identify problems, boosting productivity
in the workshop, improving customer
outcomes and increasing the likelihood of
repeat custom.”
Garages who sign up to LKQ Euro Car
Parts’ AutoEducation Academy can use
its IMI-accredited Technical Helpline and
Online Vehicle Troubleshooting services,
which provide diagnostic assistance and
technical information on all makes and
models – including Master Technicians on
the end of the phone.
Cottrell continued: “To help garages
upskill in this area, we also offer
diagnostics training courses through our
AutoEducation Academy – and there’s an
inevitable degree of overlap with some of the other
service streams that sit within Garage Services.
“Our courses take into account the different
diagnostic requirements on traditionally-fuelled and
battery-powered vehicles and of course, the need
to correctly diagnose any issues that arise from ADAS
sensors being out of calibration. It’s important to
note that ADAS and plug-in vehicles are key areas to
focus on in their own right, as both are becoming
mandatory for all new vehicle registrations in the
short to medium term.
“Despite an incredibly challenging 2020, the
pace of technological and regulatory change in the
automotive industry isn’t slowing down. Rather than
view this as bringing a new set of challenges, we’re
encouraging garages to embrace the opportunity
it represents to future-proof their businesses and
bring in more revenue.”
INDUSTRYNEWS
Industry insight
Does your business
have a plan for the
fallow time?
As we start 2021 we should be looking to see the positives we can draw
following the horrific 2020 where we saw the first national lockdown of
industry due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Julian E Woods. Chief Executive
Garage Equipment Association (GEA)
The automotive sector was initially
split with vehicle sales showroom
having to shut down, whilst most
repair and MOT business remained open.
Even though the workshops remained
open, the government decision to suspend
(extend) MOT testing for six months, has
had a massive impact on our industry that
will continue into the coming year.
Many garages could handle the
increased number of MOT’s in the autumn
months, in fact it seemed that many
welcomed it to help draw back some lost
revenue from earlier in the year, but it’s
the next few months that I have concerns
about for the industry sadly. Starting in
March, the number of MOTs due drops
to around 20% of the normal run rate,
slowly building back up month on month
until the summer. Does your business
have a plan for the fallow time? Maybe this
could be an opportunity to promote and
market for your customers to come into
the workshop with special promotional
packages of service and an early MOT?
Perhaps you are looking to use this time
to refurbish and update your MOT station/
workshop? At the time of writing this
article, we understand that the scheduled
introduction of MTS connected emission
units will still happen (planned for March).
This only effects new MOT approvals,
change of ownership of the business and
of course replacement equipment, similar
to when connected roller brake testers
and decelerometers were introduced.
Equipment manufacturers have been
busy getting their equipment ready, and
there are already many units approved
and available for the connected emissions
market. Always check out the current
DVSA equipment approved lists on the GEA
website (www.gea.co.uk) before sourcing
new or replacement MOT equipment. We
have even colour coded these lists to make
it easier to understand!
The GEA, together with other trade
associations, generated a code of conduct
for the motor vehicle aftermarket to
offer guidance for keeping your staff,
customers, and engineers safe whilst on
your site. If you have not already done
so, I recommend you review this. A
copy can be found on the GEA website.
Another area that became a concern
during lockdown and is equally if not more
important, is vehicle lift safety inspections.
The HSE did give an allowance for limited
self-inspections, but this has since
expired, and you must now be getting
your lift inspected by an independent
‘competent person’ twice a year. Please
note that independent in this context also
means your maintenance engineer is not
allowed to maintain and certify your lift.
Many workshops will use their insurance
supplier to do the mandatory inspections
/certifications, but you can also have
this done by an independent engineer if
required. Don’t forget to check if your
service provider/engineer is accredited
to do this work for you before engaging
them.
So, what else should you be looking at
for your future workshop requirements?
The biggest growth area seems to be
around advance technology (ADAS) systems
we get many questions on what equipment
is going to be needed to work on such
vehicles. Although many of the Advanced
Drive Assist Systems have been fitted to
vehicles for many years as options, now
more are becoming mandated as safety
related, and as such must be correctly
maintained to keep the vehicle legally
on the road. For suppliers of diagnostics
and specifically ADAS equipment look for
GEA members who supply/support this
equipment in our members area on
www.gea.co.uk.
IS YOUR EQUIPMENT ENGINEER
GEA ACCREDITED?
For peace of mind always use a Garage Equipment Association member.
GEA accredited engineers work to an industry code of conduct.
Your assurance their skills and knowledge have been independently assessed.
Ask your engineer for his
accreditation card !
VIEWPOINT
The deal and
UK Automotive
By Professor David Bailey works at the Birmingham Business School
and is a Senior Fellow at the ESRC’s UK in a Changing Europe programme.
That a trade deal has been agreed
at the last minute between the UK
and EU comes as a huge relief for
manufacturing sectors like automotive,
which would have faced tariffs of 10%
on exports and imports in the event of
no deal – an outcome widely viewed as
potentially ‘devastating’ for the sector.
BMW for example recently stated that a
no-trade deal scenario would push up costs
by several hundred million euros, and that
longer term it would look at where to make
the Mini model.
It’s hoped that the deal now gives a green
light to major investments in the UK that
had been stalled amidst Brexit uncertainty,
such as that by PSA in assembling the
Vauxhall/Opel Astra at Ellesmere Port, and
Nissan starting Qashqai production in 2021
at Sunderland. If so, that’s genuinely good
news in securing a new round of model
assembly at two plants at least.
But – and this is a big but - this is still
a thin deal with major implications and
costs for automotive. There are many
ways in which UK manufacturing is deeply
intertwined with the EU through complex
supply chains. Even with the deal, Brexit will
create additional costs for auto makers:
think of tariffs, customs declarations,
certification costs, audits to prove that
rules of origin requirements are met, border
delays disrupting just-in-time systems, EU
customers switching to other suppliers, visa
costs for EU workers, and so on.
And so despite Prime Minister Boris
Johnson claiming that the deal ensures ‘no
non-tariff barriers’, this is clearly not the
case. In fact, non-tariff barriers will be quite
substantial. Various estimates have put the
cost of completing customs declarations
alone at around £15bn for the UK economy
as a whole, for example. And that’s before
we get to complying with rules of origin.
With the deal, automotive firms will
want clarity on a range of areas like data
flows and the timescale for setting up UK
regulatory agencies to take over work
from their EU counterparts and so on. On
data flows there is a temporary six-month
agreement to keep the current rules in
place until a new ‘adequacy decision’ is
sorted.
Some of the final sticking points in
getting a deal over the line were over
Rules of Origin in the auto sector and on
batteries for electric vehicles in particular.
On this there is good news in that there is
full bilateral cumulation, allowing UK and
EU parts to count towards local content
rules in enabling goods like cars to avoid
tariffs. Although the UK’s ask for diagonal
cumulation with third countries like Japan,
China and Turkey was rejected by the EU,
what’s been agreed will be enough for
most car makers in the UK to avoid tariffs
unless they are importing lots of high value
components from, say, Japan.
Interestingly the UK government
summary document refers to ‘modern
and appropriate rules of origin’ – what this
actually means is not clear at this point.
What it may imply is more flexibility over
how such rules are applied.
Components
One element of flexibility appears to come
with the self-certification of rules of origin
(according to the EU summary document).
Here it appears that assemblers will need
to collect and maintain information on the
origins of components, but this appears
to give assemblers some time to set up
systems to collate this information. The
same EU document refers to ‘specific
facilitation arrangements’ for automotive.
The UK government summary document
also points to ‘predictable and low-cost
administrative arrangements for proving
origin.’ All in all, the auto industry will be
keen to see what this means for them and
whether there will be a grace period.
The UK government summary document
highlights that the Rules of Origin agreed for
batteries and electric vehicles ‘will ensure
that UK-made electric vehicles are eligible
for preferential tariff rates’. I am guessing
that this refers to the six year phase-in
of the requirement for electric cars (and
hybrids?) to have a maximum of 45%
content from outside Europe, reducing over
time, from 60% to 55% to 45%. The UK had
asked for 70%, so this is a compromise. This
could still be tight for some manufacturers
when it comes to batteries or high value
hybrid systems from outside the EU.
Toyota, for example, might struggle to
qualify its UK assembled hybrids for tariff
free export to the EU – although it has time
to increase local content, such as via its UK
engine plant. However, we don’t actually
have figures on local content as they were -
of course - not needed when the UK was in
the single market.
What the deal means is that by 2027,
there has to be 55% local content even
for battery electric vehicles for these to
qualify for tariff free trade between the
two. This will pose a particular challenge
for UK auto and industrial policy. The UK is
lagging behind EU countries in attracting
investment in battery making capacity and
without a major effort to reorientate the
auto supply change, UK car assembly will
be increasingly dependent on imported
components from the EU to meet rules of
origin rules going forward.
Overall, UK automotive will welcome the
deal in as far as it goes – after all this deal
really is better than no deal for the sector.
There will be extra costs for the industry in
terms of non-tariff barriers but things could
have been much worse. Much will depend
on the degree of flexibility allowed and the
degree of phasing in. The devil will be in the
detail but on first inspection the deal will be
welcomed by automotive manufacturers.
“It is positive that the UK Government
has reached a Brexit deal with the
EU that avoids tariffs on vehicles and
vehicle parts. As an industry, we now
have further clarity, which will enable
greater investment into the sector and
support consumer confidence.
“Franchised retailers will now be able
to focus on what they do best, ensuring
that customers get great service and
value for all their vehicle-related needs.
“Over the coming weeks, we will be
looking at the details of the agreement
to understand the full implications for
our members”.
Sue Robinson, Chief Executive of
the National Franchised Dealers
Association (NFDA), which represents
franchised car and commercial vehicle
retailers in the UK.
NEWS
VLS escalates 5w30 Longlife engine
oil case to Trading Standards
The Verification of Lubricant
Specifications (VLS) has escalated
case 166, a case relating to a Longlife
5w30 oil to Trading Standards, following an
investigation.
VLS received a complaint regarding
Mannol Longlife 5w30 504/507 Engine Oil
in September 2020. The complaint alleged
that no current additive pack existed in the
marketplace that could meet all of the OEM
claims made on the product which included
claims against VW 507 00, VW 505 01
amongst other manufacturer specifications.
During the investigation, VLS determined
that the product did receive an official
approval from VW on 8th June 2019 against
its standard 504 00/507 00. In line with the
VLS marketing claims procedure, VLS asked
the Named Party to provide the Candidate
Data Pack and a letter of support from their
additive company supporting all of the claims
made on the product, including VW 505 01
and the other manufacturer claims, which
fell short of formal OEM approvals. Despite
repeated requests, these documents were
not provided to VLS and no evidence was
submitted to confirm that the product met
any of the stated claims made apart from
VW 504/507 for which a formal approval has
been granted.
Although the local UK distributor of the
product confirmed that they had recalled all
stock and relabelled it to the original claims
made on the product, VLS escalated the
case to Trading Standards due to the lack of
available evidence that the product could
meet any claim apart from VW 504/507.
Andrew Goddard, Chairman of VLS said:
“We continue to see complaints against
5w30 engine oil that makeup such a large
part of the lubricants market for motor oils.
To keep sku counts down, manufacturers are
keen to make products that meet as many
OEM specifications as possible. However,
they must ensure that they have evidence
available that the product really can meet all
of the claims being made so that technicians
and motorists can have confidence that
products are genuinely fit for purpose.”
NEWS
2020 has been
a record year for
EAG!
2020 has been hailed a success for Excel
Automotive Group (EAG), with the company
expanding its product lines, delivery fleet and sales.
EAG was acquired by Tony Bhogal with Adrian Lamb less than two
years ago and in that time, the company has gone from strength to
strength. In just the past few months, TRICO wiper blades, Suplex
coil springs, RYMEC clutches and Celect braking have all joined the
extensive EAG portfolio.
These new products complement the core EAG branded ranges
of steering & suspension, wheel bearings, driveshafts, CV joints
and calipers, all of which are constantly being extended to improve
availability. The company has also gained approvals with several UK
buying groups.
Pirelli: low emissions and reduced fuel
consumption with new Scorpion Zero
All Season Tyre for the latest Land Rover
Defender
A bespoke tyre that
combines class-leading
rolling resistance and
off-road capability
Pirelli has reinforced its partnership with Land Rover by
creating new Scorpion Zero All Season tyres that will
feature as original equipment on the latest Defender.
Pirelli’s engineers worked in tandem with their counterparts
from Land Rover to design bespoke Scorpion Zero All Season
tyres for the new Defender: Land Rover’s off-roading icon, as
part of an intense development programme that took place all
over the world in the most extreme conditions possible.
OFF-ROAD SPIRIT BUT TOP OF THE CLASS IN ROLLING
RESISTANCE
The Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season was born as an Ultra High
Performance (UHP) tyre, intended for SUVs and designed to
deliver maximum performance throughout every season: both in
the dry and in the wet, guaranteeing excellent levels of comfort
and safety, as well as reducing noise.
In order to hit Land Rover’s target of having tyres in class A of
rolling resistance, Pirelli’s engineers worked from the ‘standard’
Scorpion Zero All Season, in 19 to 20-inch sizes, to increase its
off-road ability and reduce rolling resistance to a minimum. A
true challenge for Pirelli, with Land Rover being one of the first
manufacturers in the world to focus on reduced emissions for its
new off-roaders.
The development of the new tyre followed Pirelli’s ‘perfect fit’
philosophy, using new materials for the structure and compounds
to be classified in class A for rolling resistance, which was
specifically requested for off-road and wet grass performance.
For this specific test, conducted on a hill, Land Rover tested
Pirelli’s Scorpion Zero All Season both uphill at constant speed as
well as a sideways across the slope in order to assess lateral grip
on wet grass.
To meet Land Rover’s performance and efficiency targets for
the Defender, the Scorpion Zero All Season tyres underwent a
modification to the structure, with a new design on the shoulder
and a double tread block, which improves grip on mud, grass,
and snow. This is essential to the Defender’s performance and
stability: even at high speeds and on typically off-road surfaces.
DEVELOPMENT TESTS ON EVERY SURFACE:
FROM THE UK TO ITALY, GERMANY, SWEDEN AND SPAIN
The development of the new Scorpion Zero All Season for
the latest Defender started from Pirelli’s facilities in Carlisle and
Milan with a series of indoor laboratory tests, before moving
onto an outdoor programme. One of the testing grounds used
was Eastnor Castle in the United Kingdom’s Malvern Hills: where
Pirelli’s Scorpion Zero All Season tyres were tested on 66 miles
of varied terrain to find their limits. Snow and ice testing took
place at Land Rover’s Revi Arjeplog in northern Sweden, while
for soft handling and comfort, Pirelli used Land Rover’s own test
track at Gaydon in Warwickshire, England. The high speed and
wet handling tests were done at the legendary Nurburgring in
Germany, and at the Applus and Idiada facility in Spain, as well as
at Pirelli’s own Vizzola test track. This is considered by Land Rover
to be one of the best places to assess wet handling, underlining
the long history between the two companies that dates back to
the 1970s, when the first Cinturato P5 was developed for Jaguar.
MOMENTUM
Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore
Having announced in November 2020
the re-scheduling of the Tyrexpo
Asia 2021 show to the 17th to 19th
November this year due to the COVID 19
Pandemic, Tarsus Group has since been
working hard to communicate with all
confirmed exhibitors and rearrange the hall
layout of the show which will still take place
at the prestige Marina Bay Sands Expo and
Convention Centre in Singapore.
Amidst the current pandemic, 96% of
the current exhibitors who have already
signed up for the event have maintained
their booth bookings and at the same time
new companies who have also confirmed
their participation at the show at the
start of 2021 includes Elden Recycling
from Denmark, Xin Ji Da and Track Link
International from Singapore.
Whilst more than 150 international
buyers have shown interest in Tyrexpo Asia
2021’s Hosted Buyers Scheme from which
120 top leading buyers will be hosted. Final
details and matchmaking will be scheduled
later in the year.
Alwin Seow, Tyrexpo Asia Events Director
says, “We are pleased to work with Marina
Bay Sands in securing these new dates plus
a number changes have been made to the
layout in Halls D, E & F, Basement 2 where
the show will now take place. These new
halls will prove to be more convenient for
exhibitors and visitors as they give easy
access to everywhere in the hotel complex
including the subways, hotel, shopping
malls and conference rooms. The special
Alwin concludes, “Now that Tyrexpo Asia
2021 will be held towards the very end of
this year, we are confident that with the
COVID 19 vaccine program now starting to
roll out on an international basis, the event
will prove to be an overwhelming success
and become Asia’s leading tyre, wheel and
automotive accessory show for the future.”
State-of-art bodyshop completed
during lockdown opens its doors
A brand new bodyshop delivered at the height of the Covid-19
national lockdown has opened its doors after a six-month fit-out
by LKQ Euro Car Parts’ Workshop Solutions team.
East Bilney Coachworks’ eighth site, in Thetford, is equipped
with state-of-the-art equipment for servicing vehicles that
feature increasingly sophisticated technology. Designed
to be a one-stop-shop for all vehicle repair needs, it has a full
suite of diagnostic tools to allow every vehicle in the workshop –
including hybrids and electric vehicles – to receive a full pre- and
post-service analysis.
This enables the team to properly understand the extent of the
damage done to a vehicle beyond any visible bumps and scrapes,
create a bespoke repair plan and re-test all components and
sensors at the end of a service to guarantee roadworthiness.
The workshop is also fitted out with the latest bodyshop
equipment such as ramps, dent pullers and welders, and features
a sliding spray booth capable of painting seven vehicles at a time,
significantly boosting the site’s capacity and reducing key-to-key
time for customers.
The design, created by the LKQ Euro Car Parts Workshop
Solutions division, champions efficiency across every aspect of
the workshop, even down to the plant room, where a bespoke
controlled air system ensures optimal temperatures are
preserved whatever the weather, to keep machinery operating
safely throughout the year.
The final look and feel incorporates clean lines and aluminium
finishes, making the workshop simple to clean and maintain,
and helping to ensure the shortest possible cycle time for every
vehicle.
Mark Baldwin, director at East Bilney Coachworks, said: “This
is the first time I’ve partnered with LKQ Euro Car Parts on a
workshop fit-out, and it has been a completely seamless process
from start to finish. After the initial meeting where the design was
agreed, other than a weekly production meeting, I was able to sit
back and let the team get to work.
“It has been a challenging few months for us, due to the impact
of Covid-19, but the team has been able to guarantee safe,
socially-distanced working practices throughout the whole fitout
process, to deliver my vision of a ‘space age’ workshop that’s
fit for the future.
“We now have all the equipment we need to do anything the
main dealerships can do – and we’ve got manufacturer approval
to service a series of leading makes and
models. This means we’re in a position to
ensure every insurer and driver can send
vehicles our way with confidence, knowing
that they can expect the highest standards
of service every time.”
Adam White, Workshop Solutions
director at LKQ Euro Car Parts, said:
“As the vehicles on our roads become
smarter, it’s vital that technicians across
every discipline have the skills and tools
available to service them.
“Whenever a car equipped with ADAS,
for example, is involved in a collision,
there’s a risk of its finely-tuned sensors
being knocked out of calibration.
Bodyshops must be ready to address
this as standard in any vehicle repair,
becoming a true one-stop-shop to help
drivers get their vehicles back as quickly as
possible.
“Working with Mark has been fantastic
– he recognised the need to futureproof
his workshop, and had clear goals
in mind for the final design. The end
result is a clean, efficient workshop that
is ready to adapt and respond to the
evolution of vehicle technologies, built
with outstanding customer service at its
heart.”
Mark Baldwin, director at East Bilney Coachworks
Family-owned East Bilney Coachworks
was founded in 1975, and now has a
200-strong workforce working across
eight sites in East Anglia.
LKQ Euro Car Parts’ six-strong
Workshop Solutions project team provides
a full end-to-end service for workshop
design and upgrades, spanning initial
design, fit-out and handover, as well as the
ongoing supply of paints, parts, training
UNDERTHESPOTLIGHT
Under the Spotlight
Fred Hederson, 60 years’ experience in the automotive industry
We have something slightly different for you in this issues ‘In The Spotlight’ feature.
Fred Henderson is a regular contributor in our sister publication ‘Professional Recovery Magazine’. With
over 60 years’ experience in the automotive industry, Fred regularly provides his opinions and experiences
in the vehicle recovery world.
After a successful amateur rallying career,
winning over 40 rallies, Fred turned
his attention first to redesigning and
producing rally car tyres (see panel opposite)
and then motor sport recovery.
Over the year’s Fred built up his business
which now includes a two acre site containing
a body shop, Bosch service centre and an MG
and Sang-Yong dealership. Fred handed over the
reins of the business to his son David when he
decided to retire at the age of 76 in September
last year.
Motorsport Recovery - not for
the faint hearted
Everyone knows the recovery industry
requires many diverse skills and we all say
no two jobs are alike, probably not true if you do
enough.
One of the areas I have been lucky to work in
is the recovery of damaged and broken racing
cars, something I have done for over 25 years,
and it’s been quite a journey. I have helped to
remodel the wheel and tried to put the world to
right.
In day to day recovery work, recovery
vehicles’ have perhaps a value of £50,000
upwards and recover cars from £150 to
whatever you chose. When I started circuit
recovery in 1995 it was not unusual for a £400
truck to be trying to recover a quarter million
pound racing car, which often ended badly.
When I took over at Croft the vehicle of
choice was a Bedford CF with a homemade
Harvey Frost crane which had been used for
years and this situation was often repeated
across the racing circuits of the whole country.
The problem is simple; racing cars are often
very low, 50mm is a high ground clearance
(known as ride height) and many are much
nearer the ground, and in most cases have a
large protruding front spoiler. Since the reason
for recovery is often a puncture or suspension
failure, ground clearance becomes nil.
About 25 years ago, sick of unnecessary
damage, racing drivers and race organizers
decided to address the short falls, but it’s been
a long journey. Firstly most race tracks had one
full time recovery truck crewed by permanent
staff that over the years have developed and
polished their skills with whatever vehicle
they have had to work with. The default unit is
usually a slide back with a modest hiab fitted;
after all, race cars are never very heavy. The
trouble was the job still needs a lot of brain
work as unlike heavy recovery now, there were
no adapters to help load the stricken cars. The
hiab is a great tool for recovering single seater
cars, but try lifting a saloon and it’s a different
story, also the slide back leaves so much to be
desired because of the low ride height. So many
wooden chocks became the order of the day
together with broken air dams and spoilers.
While the day to day crews managed one way
or another it was often a sad story when normal
road recovery team were brought in to help,
turning up with slide backs and all the problems
of low cars, apart from the recovery another
factor is the need for a swift clearance often
under the watch full eye of live television, so
sooner or later all of this required an upgrade.
While the circuits slowly improved the main
change came about as some companies and
one or two individuals decide to push on and
do the job properly. The first that comes to
mind is Barrie Mills who started at the small
Leicestershire circuit Mallory Park but is now
also at Silverstone and the defunct Rockingham.
Donington track meanwhile acquired the
services of Nottingham Recovery and also Mick
Avery, another operator who knows his onions.
UNDERTHESPOTLIGHT
At the same time Circuit owner and former Formula one driver
Jonathan Palmer had enlisted the services of D&G Recovery
who supplied a whole fleet of vehicles for his Brand Hatch and
Snetterton operations so avoiding the need to look for weekend
backup crews. For my part I took over responsibility for Croft
Circuit recovery in 1997 and have advised and helped Knockhill
Circuit in Scotland since 2005.
Things have come a long way but it’s taken a long time. When I
started people would turn up to do recovery with no experience
and a day job; miles away from what is required. With a dedicated
bunch of helpers new ideas started to be used; crews worked
out with the aid of spreader beams how to lift saloon cars
without damaging the roof. Lifting on the roll cage and wheels
became the norm, and the speed of recovery improved. For my
part I took a slightly different route equipping both my circuits
with street lifters and after 13 years the concept has proved
unbeatable, the frames being easy removed for single seater
recovery. Another thing about a street lifter, they are designed
to travel with the crane extended above the casualty car, unlike a
new HIAB that needs to be folded away before the truck will drive
off, which can be very time consuming.
About 10 years ago I was asked by the British Touring Car
Championship to solve a problem of towing eyes and tow straps
breaking when towing cars out of deep gravel traps. I designed
and supplied a 6mm stainless steel wire tow eye. After testing
over three seasons of touring car use they are now used by
Colway Tyres
By 1984 my driving career had come to an end as I
approached 40 years old but not before I had won over 40
rallies.
Once not driving I turned my attention to something
that had bugged me for years - remould tyres. They are
used on all sorts of cars, trucks even airliners use them,
but now it was time for motor sport. I joined up with top
manufacturer Colway Tyres, at the time one of the largest
manufactures in the world. Together we took the sport
by storm. At the time a new rally tyre cost about £50; a
Colway rally tyre sold for about £20!
After the tyres were ready, I used them for my final rally,
which I won! Sales started slowly but within four months
we were selling 3000 a month. Colway asked me to set
up a motor sport department which we ran for 22 years
winning championships in many country’s including the
Swedish three times.
In 1982 we set up a machine shop as I had developed
a system to repair staked in prop shafts. Once again, like
the tyres, the savings were large. A new shaft being over
£100, with our repair at around £20. Needless to say we
used to repair over 400 a month - work for two full time
staff. We could make and balance any prop shaft and made
units for Vauxhall motorsport among other customers. This
continued until front wheel drive made mass prop shafts
a thing off the past. I sold the operation in 1998 and to this
day runs as a great small business.
hundreds of competitors across many disciplines. Introducing
a roof lifting system has not been so easy, after banging on for
years; three years ago the powers to be introduced a system
whereby a saloon car has lifting points in the roof of each car
with its point of balance worked out, so simple, and now many
cars have it. It was so good at one meeting our lifting frames
remained off the bed all weekend.
I have always had a dream that one day all motorsport cars (yes,
rally as well) will have wire towing eyes and a roof lifting system
but it’s sad that many people involved in motorsport who know
more about the job than me, ‘their words’ will tell me it’s been ok
for years so why change.
Looking back how things have changed over the years, I feel I
have helped make a big difference and along the way have made
many friends and lost a few. When I took over at Croft there were
seven people doing recovery, the next week there was one, and
that one has overseen recovery there ever since.
The big problem with recovery there are so many experts we
see them at the roadside while recovering a RTC, ‘why don’t you
do it like that mate’ they shout. Let me say recovering a race
car provides many more experts and it may be this that has
made progress slow, but we are getting there now, I hope.
Yuasa battery testing lab becomes
first to achieve UKAS accreditation
GS Yuasa, producer of Yuasa batteries, has become the first battery
manufacturer to achieve IS17025 UKAS accreditation. The honour,
gained by the testing facility at the GS Yuasa Battery Manufacturing
UK factory in Ebbw Vale, Wales will allow industrial VRLA batteries to
the very highest standard available.
The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is the highest
level of accreditation service in the world and the only accreditation
body in the UK. It is a government recognised organisation which
strives to assess companies that provide certification, testing,
inspection and calibration services to internationally agreed
assessment standards.
In order to gain accreditation, GS Yuasa’s state of the art
laboratory had to meet specific and strict criteria. All equipment was
regulated by UKAS and every employee operating in the laboratory
needed to be audited. Both aspects will be monitored regularly. The
accreditation allows GS Yuasa to independently test their batteries
in house.
Mike Taylor, Product Manager at GS Yuasa Battery Manufacturing
UK Ltd said, “By having IS17025 accreditation we can manage
the testing and regulating of our batteries effectively in house.
This guarantees all industrial VLRA products going out the door is
measured to the utmost standard, ensuring that our customers
receive the industry leading performance that GS Yuasa strive for.”
“We are extremely proud to have gained this highly respected
accreditation. UKAS are a top organisation recognised for their
excellent testing standards worldwide. It is great to work with them
as we share the same values of quality, reliability and performance in
everything we do.”
ISO/IEC 17025 is an internationally recognised standard to assess
factors relevant to a laboratory’s ability to produce precise, accurate
tests and data. Contributing attributes include the technical
competence of staff, the validity and appropriateness of test
methods, the suitability and maintenance of test equipment, the
Get ballsy with GS Yuasa and OddBalls’
‘Always Check Your Balls’ campaign for testicular cancer
GS Yuasa are calling on everyone to help
raise awareness of testicular cancer having
announced a new partnership with OddBalls.
The battery manufacturer is donating £5,000
to the cancer charity and launching limited
edition GS and Yuasa OddBalls bobble hats
which they are encouraging people to wear
and share online to spread the message.
It’s well known that most industries
that use GS Yuasa’s batteries, including
automotive, motorcycle and industrial
markets, are primarily occupied by men,
meaning the OddBalls message is of huge
importance to all. Roughly six men a day
are diagnosed with testicular cancer, with
incidence rates increasing by more than a
quarter over the last two decades.
Following the wide-spread success of
their high-profile ‘Always Check the Battery’
scheme, GS Yuasa have now launched
‘Always Check Your Balls’. It is hoped that
this fun twist on the message will highlight
the importance of conducting regular
self-exams as well as raise awareness of
OddBalls.
The battery manufacturer is encouraging
people to show their support by sharing a
photo wearing an OddBalls GS or OddBalls
Yuasa hat on social media, using the
hashtags #OddBalls and #Yuasa. Hats are
available to buy now from www.yuasa.
co.uk/oddballs/ with all profits helping the
OddBalls Foundation raise awareness of
testicular cancer.
GS Yuasa have called upon their
motorsport and other famous friends to help
promote the campaign. So look out for some
well-knowns faces wearing the bobble hats
over the coming weeks.
Jon Pritchard, General Sales & Marketing
Manager at GS Yuasa Battery Sales UK
said: “For the last four years we’ve been
encouraging workshops to always check
the battery, now we’re encouraging them
to always check their balls. We also want
everyone to get involved and help us spread
the message far and wide by posting a fun
picture of themselves online wearing our
fantastic Oddballs bobble hats.
“Testicular cancer affects over 2,300 men
every year, with the highest rates seen in
men aged between 30 to 34 – it’s also 98%
curable if detected early. OddBalls have
done a fantastic job of raising awareness
and encouraging men to regularly check
themselves, something our £5,000 donation
will ensure they can continue.”
Robyn Henderson, Head of Marketing at
OddBalls added: “We love GS Yuasa’s idea of
the ‘Always Check Your Balls’ campaign and
can’t wait to see it take shape! We’re looking
forward to seeing lots of people wearing
their OddBalls bobble hats to help raise
awareness!”
A Brand-new AC Component
Expands Nissens’ Product Range
Nissens Automotive, the automotive
system components provider, has
expanded its range of air conditioning
(AC) parts with the introduction of thermal
expansion valves (TXV). Along with the
compressor, condenser, receiver-dryer
and evaporator, the TXV is one of the AC
system’s key components, and it is now
available through leading replacement parts
distributors.
Adding the expansion valve to the
already wide variety of the climate system
components is part of Nissens’ strategy to
be a one-stop-shop within the AC system.
At the same time, the company aims to
strengthen its leading position as the
acknowledged system specialist by offering
its commercial partners a complete package
with the major system components, and
thus increase their competitiveness in the
replacement parts distribution sector. In
turn, AC specialists and the independent
workshops installing climate system
components will also become beneficiaries
of the expanded Nissens AC range.
Jonas Evald Kristensen, Product Manager,
Climate Comfort System at Nissens explains:
“Our development approach behind
the expansion valves launch was, among
others, determined by two important
measures. Both are for the clear benefit of
the aftermarket at all levels. First, by the
aim of offering the widest range of different
components in the system, hence making it
possible for distributors to benefit from an
extensive replacement parts programme,
available from one supplier. In addition, by
maximising the vehicle parc coverage of the
assorted offering, we help our customers
to enhance their competitiveness, so they
can provide an even more suitable and
comprehensive solution to fulfil the needs
of the market.
“The second measure was aimed at
installers, to ensure they undertake
the correct AC service. The proper
fitting procedure of other costly system
components, such as the AC compressor,
can now more easily be followed, as the
valve replacement is one of the key steps
in the process. Additionally, Nissens’ TXV
is a First-Fit product and is equipped with
all the necessary installation parts, so the
technician does not have to spend extra
time to find the O-rings or mounting bolts
needed for the replacement.”
The expansion valve is one of the key
components in the AC system. Despite
its small size, the valve plays a crucial role
in securing the system’s proper working
parameters. The valve’s operational
characteristics influence not only the
system’s overall performance, but also
proper operation of other important
components”. The refrigerant’s flow and
working parameters, among others, are
controlled by the valve. These have an
important influence on the AC compressor
workloads, that can affect its lifespan
and provoke premature failures. It is
therefore important that the valve operates
accurately in a specific way, as determined
by the particular system design. It is also
recommended that the valve should always
be replaced during the installation of a new
compressor.
Christos Saka, Quality Engineer at Nissens
Automotive and responsible for the part
quality assurance, explains:
“When developing the Nissens TXV,
we placed great emphasis on ensuring
its proper work performance. It must
correspond to the parameters of the
vehicles’ AC system. As an original
equipment (OE) replacement, the valve
should operate, i.e., regulate the flow and
pressure of the refrigerant, in exactly the
same way as the OE part installed at the
factory. Therefore, we ensure that the
valve’s function, and all its key components
are rigorously tested. The valve’s inner
components are made of high-grade
materials and with attention to the smallest
detail. The most critical part, the power
(and sensing) element, is made with the
appropriate charge technology. This ensures
the part’s proper performance at various
temperatures and pressures occurring in its
working cycle.
“The valve itself also undergoes
numerous quality tests including function,
performance, fitting, durability, and
tightness validation. All this to ensure a
perfect match with the characteristics
of the OE valve, and thus the optimal
working parameters of the air-conditioning
system, and the Nissens technology
centre in Germany contributed greatly
to this process. Combined with the
extensive efforts of the entire engineering
team involved in the project, we could
design and utilise advanced test stands
for the valve and the examination of the
components. Applying genuine Nissens
quality standards, we have developed a
top-notch replacement part for reliable AC
system performance and safe, trouble-free
operation of the AC compressor.”
The initial release of the Nissens TXV
range includes 60 plus reference numbers,
covering more than 275 OE numbers and
caters for the most popular car, van and
truck applications. All are marked as First
Fit products and are therefore delivered
with all the necessary installation parts,
i.e., O-rings and mounting bolts, whenever
applicable.
The Nissens TXV range has been available
to the UK’s leading replacement parts
distributors since November, and will be
available to AC installation professionals in
February 2021.
Schaeffler
launches FAG
Steering &
Suspension
Programme
• Market relevant range in uncompromising quality
• Complete intelligent repair solutions
• Unique technical features
Schaeffler, the renowned and respected original equipment
(OE) component and system manufacturer, has introduced
a comprehensive steering & suspension programme under
its FAG brand. It hopes to provide the aftermarket with an
alternative to other OE quality products by incorporating unique
technical features and offering unrivalled service.
Steering & suspension components are obviously safety
critical, so quality should always be a major consideration for
both garage and vehicle owner. The new FAG range consistently
delivers advanced quality standards and is backed up by
Schaeffler’s market leading REPXPERT workshop support system.
As a technical partner of vehicle manufacturers around the
world, as well as a leading innovator with more than 130 years
of chassis expertise, FAG has an uncompromising approach to
quality. As a result, every single component in the new range has
been approved by Schaeffler’s own engineers using the most
stringent testing standards, right down to the last nut, bolt and
washer. This unwavering attention to detail should inspire garage
owners and mechanics to have complete confidence in the
quality of every part.
Designed for all key applications in the European car parc, the
market-oriented range naturally follows Schaeffler’s philosophy
of providing installers with a complete repair solution in just
one box. This means that as well as being manufactured to
the company’s OE quality standards, every component comes
complete with all ancillaries – nuts, bolts, washers and clips etc.
– so technicians can complete a safe and professional repair with
no hunting round for extras.
The FAG chassis component range has been developed from
the ground up to benefit from the company’s intelligent repair
solution ethos, with Schaeffler’s product engineers demanding
the highest material standards and manufacturing specifications
to ensure consistent quality. Ball pins are nitride treated to
maximise longevity, whilst all exterior surfaces have market
leading zinc flake coating technology to resist corrosion. They
are further protected by clear thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)
boots with a micro-sealing lip design that adapts perfectly to the
ball contour. As well as being unique to the UK market, they are
also highly resistant to liquids and mechanical loading, whilst the
transparent material allows the mechanic to see the quality and
quantity of the grease inside.
Commenting on the launch, Schaeffler UK’s Managing Director,
Nigel Morgan, said: “Everything we do is geared towards helping
professionals carry out the best possible repairs using the
highest quality components. The addition of the FAG steering &
suspension range is therefore a significant development, allowing
us to provide workshops with a viable alternative from a trusted
supplier, along with the market leading workshop support that we
offer with every Schaeffler product.”
An effective reinvestment strategy from lubricants maker Exol Lubricants
has seen the company continue to increase turnover and profitability.
With multi-million pound investments
made to its Wednesbury production
and head office facility, along with major
building & production improvements
scheduled for its Rotherham based
blending plant, the company continues
to provide customers with stability and
confidence.
In the past five years alone, Exol has
reinvested in all areas of its business
including the addition of new trucks to
its delivery fleet, infrastructure projects
at all facilities and, a substantial growth
in its small pack production and export
sales.
Acting swiftly at the outbreak of the
coronavirus pandemic, Exol implemented
a number of procedures to safeguard
employees and customers and its
contactless delivery has been widely
praised by customers and industry alike.
Exol sales and marketing director,
Steve Dunn said: “Key to Exol’s growth
has been its continued strategy of
reinvestment over the years, especially
against the backdrop of the coronavirus
pandemic and other outside influences
such as Brexit.
“Our staff and supply chain has
performed admirably this year in the
toughest of conditions and through these
investments we are primed for further
growth going into 2021.”
Exol is the UK’s largest independently
owned lubricants company,
manufacturing and supplying lubricants
to agricultural, marine, automotive and
industrial sectors in over 40 countries
worldwide.
Exol Lubricants is also committed
to supporting a sustainable future and
maintains use of the waterways to
transport materials.
WHEELUV Alloy Protection
offers profitable proposition,
says aftermarket
Zalloys International Limited,
manufacturer of WHEELUV Alloy
Protection, is helping boost workshops’
bottom lines, as more garages join its
Certified Partner network to supply and fit
motorists’ vehicles with a cost-effective
solution to reduce the risk of wheel damage.
Launched in 2017 to dealerships and OEMs,
WHEELUV Alloy Protection’s factory-fit
appearance is just one of the reasons why
it has been the industry’s go-to supplier
to some of the world’s leading automotive
brands. And now, the independent
aftermarket has been offered the ideal
opportunity to supply and fit this industryapproved
product that provides high profit
margins, while its customers can benefit
from a patented, discreet and impactresistant
system stamped with an industry
seal of approval.
As a sacrificial wheel protector that
will take the brunt of the impact between
the kerb and the wheel, WHEELUV is
made from an impact resistant polymer
that combines resilience with chemical
resistance across a wide temperature range.
Its components have been subjected to
submersion tests in fuel, oil, brake fluid, all
major types of wheel cleaners (including
acidic and basic products), along with other
workshop products to ensure colour and
functionality are unaffected – an area where
competitors have often fallen short.
To date, more than 50,000 wheels have
been protected already, thanks in part to
its compatibility with most wheels and tyres
including diamond cut wheels and run flat
tyres. What makes the WHEELUV offering
even more compelling to garages and
workshops is that it is very much a solution
specifically designed with the industry in
mind. The efficient installation process
makes use of a bespoke wipe system to save
having to wash wheels, and there is no need
to deflate tyres or break the bead, saving
labour costs due to shorter fitting times.
Opportunity
Installers can also change tyres without
damaging the protectors, using a proprietary
process developed by the Zalloys team.
WHEELUV Certified Partner Andrew
Truswell of Alloy Refurbs in Sutton-in-
Ashfield joined the network and was no
stranger to the brand. He explains: “As a
business owner it seemed second nature
for me to partner with the team when it
launched WHEELUV. We’ve worked with the
WHEELUV team for over 20 years on different
OE parts, so I knew the calibre of product
involved. We offer wheel repairs to our
customers, so it made sense to offer them
a way to protect their wheels after they’d
been repaired, using a product which has
been developed by a team with an extensive
history as a tier 1 OEM parts manufacturer.
Fitting 15 sets of protectors a
month on average makes us
nearly £15,000 a year, so it’s a
great upsell opportunity.”
Marcus Jones of Hucknall
Lane Service Centre in Bulwell
is another certified partner
who agrees on its potential:
“We’re always looking for
quality products to offer
our customers, so we were
genuinely excited when we got
to work with Jon, James and
the WHEELUV protectors.
We were particularly
impressed that the company
placed extra investment in
developing a process around
having tyres changed, but I
suppose that’s what you get
when you work with an OE
manufacturer. Making about
£30,000 profit a year makes it
a no brainer.”
Lean Storage Solutions - R-Reforged
R-Reforged keeps Aston Martin
Zagato project neat and tidy -
with help from Lean Storage
Solutions
Only a total of 38 customer vehicles will
be produced in the limited run of Aston
Martin Vantage V12 Zagato Heritage TWINS
by R-Reforged, which are being built under
licence by Aston Martin.
With such a restricted client
list, greater importance was
added to the design of the
new R-Reforged facility and workshop
where the cars would be hand built;
and play host to customers wishing to
see their vehicles in production. Clean
lines and colour co-ordination to match
the corporate image were vital, for this
the company turned to Lean Storage
Solutions, whose expertise in design,
project management and product
range secured the contract for such a
prestigious undertaking.
The connection between Lean Storage
Solutions and R-Reforged goes back to
the end of 2019, when plans were being
formulated to update R-Reforged’s
existing workshop space, then along came
Covid 19 and things were put on hold. In
the meantime, the Aston Martin Vantage
V12 Zagato Heritage TWINS by R-Reforged
project came to the fore, with it a more
pressing requirement for a completely
new workshop. “There are a few specialist
companies supplying workshop storage
systems, but the work we had already
done with Lean Storage Solutions gave
us the confidence that the team could
deliver on price, design and quality,” says
R-Reforged Head of Operations, Paul
Kelly.
“We needed a supplier that could
work with us to tailor the workshop to
our particular needs, specifically drawer
depths to suit tools, and cupboards with
enough space to keep everything neat and
tidy. Colour of the equipment was also
important to fit our corporate scheme.
Dean O’Neill from Lean Storage Solutions
listened to our needs and configured the
The new workshop fitted out by Lean Storage Solutions ready for assembly
of the Aston Martin Vantage V12 Zagato Heritage TWINS by R-Reforged
workshop perfectly for us.” Key to Lean
Storage Solutions winning this prestigious
contract was Dean O’Neill’s attention
to detail, gained from his 20 years’
experience in consulting and designing
workshop furniture solutions for a wide
range of customers, from SME’s through to
blue-chip businesses.
With the order for the workshop
placed, a tight turnaround was required
for delivery and installation due to
Covid disruptions and to complete it
ahead of project assembly beginning. To
achieve this, Dean O’Neill made himself
available for regular site meetings and the
Swiss engineering firm R-Reforged, a specialist in creating bespoke and limited-edition vehicles, has forged
the optimum working environment at its UK facility, where it will produce a limited edition run of Aston Martin
Vantage V12 Zagato Heritage TWINS by R-Reforged. Exclusively available as a pair – a Coupé and a fresh off the
drawing board Speedster – just 19 customer sets will be available, all of which will be built at its recently opened
facility in Warwick, which has been fitted out by storage specialist Lean Storage Solutions.
and despite Covid and the necessity for
social distancing, any changes, such as
additional cupboards and lockers for the
team and even the signage, which Dean
managed in partnership with Signtec (UK),
were dealt with smoothly,” says Paul Kelly.
To furnish the workshop Lean Storage
Solutions worked with Italy-based storage
system manufacturer MG Magrini, for
which it is the UK agent. “The opportunity
to work on such a prestigious project is
a real feather in the cap for Lean Storage
Solutions. I am grateful for the confidence
that R-Reforged placed in me and MG
Magrini to deliver the package that would
fulfil its needs; in terms of efficiency,
on-time delivery and product quality.
The flexibility of the MG Magrini product
range allowed me to optimise the total
footprint and maximise available storage
space, along with providing integrated
service legs that deliver power and air to
individual workspaces,” says Dean O’Neill.
“Making full use of the modularity of the
MG Magrini units we included roll-out
tool storage for each car bay, sliding
door cabinets, workbenches, lockers and
flooring, to truly tailor a solution.”
The success of the fitting out of this new
workshop was such a good experience and
it has enhanced Lean Storage Solutions
reputation within R-Reforged. “We
have confidence in the capabilities and
experience on offer and the portfolio of
products providing a one-stop-shop for
workshop storage and fit-out. With this
in mind, we can now turn our attention
back to our original workshop, which will
be used for several other projects,” says
Paul Kelly.
Those projects include the Aston Martin
CALLUM Vanquish 25 by R-Reforged, a
partnership between R-Reforged and
design and engineering business CALLUM,
which includes original Vanquish designer
Ian Callum amongst its founders. As
the number indicates, just 25 cars will
be produced, with a starting price of
£350,000 for existing Vanquish owners.
Boston
is Moving!
• Growth Leads to Relocation to Larger Site
• Accelerated growth at Boston has prompted move to new
22,000 sq. ft premises.
Boston is excited to announce that we are relocating from our
Rainham premises in East London to new, much larger premises near
Maldon in Essex.
Our new warehouse and office space is approximately 22,000
square feet; nearly four times larger than our previous site. This new
facility will provide much-needed extra space to accommodate more
stock, a growing product portfolio and an expanding team.
To enable a smooth transition, the move began over the December
holiday period and should be completed by 18th January 2021 when
all teams will be operational from the new site.
Whilst the Boston postal address will change (a postal redirect will
be in place for the next six months), the office contact numbers and
email addresses will remain the same. Now outdated, our fax is being
discontinued.
Director Bradley Calcutt comments, “We are incredibly excited
about this new milestone for Boston which is the culmination of our
strong and sustained business growth during recent years. Boston
continues to go from strength to strength thanks to heavy investment
in R&D and in-house product design that keeps our equipment and
software at the forefront of industry requirements. Despite the
difficult circumstances of 2020, we introduced two new Four Post
MOT Lifts and became the first manufacturer to receive Connected
Equipment approval for our Roller Brake Tester, Decelerometer and
Emissions Equipment. Our new connected Headlight Tester is also
virtually complete and we are just awaiting final specifications from
the DVSA. The relocation to new premises comes as part of our
planned expansion into additional markets and new product lines.”
“We have done everything possible to minimise disruption to our
customers. The new premises were previously owned by a large
international manufacturing company and the layout and modern IT
infrastructure lends itself ideally to our needs. This means we should
be up and running very quickly once we are on site. Nevertheless, as
the main bulk of the move will take place between 11th-15th January
we do ask that our customers bear with us during that period.”
Boston has grown from a small family business initially supplying
emissions equipment, to a leading manufacturer of garage and MOT
equipment. As the company has grown there has been an increased
focus on software development, and as a result, 2021 will also see the
release of new cutting-edge software for Boston Roller Brake Testers,
Emissions Test Equipment and hopefully several other products
currently in development.
Boston’s new address is as follows:
Automotive charity launches
Breakout for Ben - Road to £1 million
• Ben encourages whole automotive
industry to get involved in new virtual
challenge to address £1m fundraising
shortfall
• Over £530k raised but more support is
needed so no-one in automotive faces
life’s toughest challenges alone
Automotive charity, Ben, has
announced the launch of its new
active virtual challenge for the whole
industry, called Breakout for Ben - road to
£1 million.
This new challenge follows on from Ben’s
rallying cry last year asking industry leaders
for urgent support, following a 50% increase
in service demand against a £1m income
shortfall. An incredible £530,000 has been
pledged so far by automotive industry
companies to help address Ben’s fundraising
shortfall, however there is still some way to
go to ensure Ben can be there for everyone
who needs support.
Therefore, Breakout for Ben is the latest
challenge to launch as part of the Do It 4
Ben fundraising programme, to help ensure
no-one in automotive faces life’s toughest
challenges alone. Originally an annual
fundraising challenge for Ben by TrustFord,
Breakout for Ben has now been opened
up so the whole automotive industry can
get involved and show their support, even
during lockdown.
Virtual journey
This year, Breakout for Ben will run from
5th - 14th February with socially-distanced
teams of up to 10 covering 1,722 miles by
exercising in their own way to fundraise for
Ben. The event will see teams embark on a
virtual journey visiting motor circuits across
the UK, starting at Pembrey Circuit in north
Wales and taking in all four home nations,
before ending at Silverstone. Using an app,
teams can track their progress together
meaning they don’t need to be physically
together with other team members during
the challenge.
Breakout for Ben promises some
healthy competition between automotive
companies, as well as being a positive way to
kickstart the New Year by focusing on health
and fitness. There will be prizes awarded
for the winners of various categories,
including ‘Furthest in the first 24 hours’ and
‘Most raised’. Participants can choose to
walk, run, cycle or exercise in any way they
choose to progress along the route.
All funds raised through Breakout for Ben
will support automotive industry people
to look after their mental health, physical
health and wellbeing. It means Ben will be
there to help in a crisis or if someone needs
help with stress, anxiety, depression, money
worries, or anything else.
Matt Wigginton, Fundraising Director at
Ben, said: “Thanks to the incredible support
of our industry, we are now on the road to
raising £1m to help people in our industry
when they need it most. This said, we still
urgently need your help as we’re not there
yet.
“Twice as many people are turning to Ben
for mental health support and we don’t
want to be forced to make tough decisions
about who we can and can’t support.
Automotive people need us now more
than ever, as this period of unprecedented
challenges continues. The issues people are
facing now are more urgent and complex
than ever.
“This is why we’re launching Breakout
for Ben - road to £1 million. It’s a fun virtual
challenge that anyone and everyone can get
involved in! It’s a great way to kickstart the
New Year and start hitting those 2021 fitness
goals. Let’s join together for one last push
to hit £1m - your support really will make a
huge difference! So get your trainers at the
ready for February. We hope you’ll join us
to help ensure no-one in automotive has to
face life’s toughest challenges alone. Thank
you.”
LIGHTSFEATURE
HELLA THE COMPLETE
LIGHTING EXPERT
Original equipment (OE) manufacturer and system supplier
HELLA is synonymous with lighting and over the years has
pioneered numerous developments in the sector. This
heritage still holds true as the company’s recent history
demonstrates.
Used under several different brand
names, HELLA’s glare-free high
beam lighting system has now been
adopted by many vehicle manufacturers
(VMs) on numerous of their models, but
with the 2018 Audi A7 Sportback, the
headlamps for which are available as LED,
Matrix LED and HD Matrix LED with laser
high beam variants, the technology has
moved to another level.
The system uses a new single control
unit, which takes care of all of the lighting
functions, from low to high beams, to
‘wiping’ direction indicators, as well as the
interior lighting solution, which includes
animations for the driver when entering
and exiting the vehicle.
The appearance of both headlamps and
rear combination lamps is no longer only
relevant at night, rather they have become
a significant distinguishing characteristic
for VMs, with homogenous lighting
functions having ever greater importance
and by incorporating this trait into the
lighting of its rear combination lamps,
Audi’s flagship A8 demonstrates this trend.
HELLA has made this solution possible
by integrating organic light-emitting diode
(OLED) technology into the vehicle’s rear
combination lamps.
The OLEDs, which are made from
layers of organic semiconductor, can be
distributed across a carrier material and
with two electrodes, they will illuminate
evenly. The technology can therefore
remove the necessity of reflectors, light
guides and additional optics and allow a
homogenous appearance and completely
new design opportunities.
With a total of eight OLEDs, each
divided into four segments that can be
controlled individually, the innovation
enables the A8 to display different ‘leaving
home’ or ‘coming home’ light scenarios.
The combination of two upper segments,
which make-up the stop light and the
lower segments, the tail light, creates the
vehicle’s unique look.
Naturally, in addition to these complex
OE design solutions, HELLA also provides
the independent aftermarket with
the products it needs on a daily basis.
So, whether the requirement is as
fundamental as a standard direction
indicator bulb or visually impressive as the
company’s LEDay Flex – the latest in LED
daytime running lights, with two pre-wired
chains of either five or eight high-tech
optic light modules – it’s HELLA’s expertise
that the rest have to follow.
Get Into Alignment!
Lighting is more than replacement bulbs
It is little wonder that HELLA, the company behind so many of the
automotive industry’s lighting firsts, also offers the aftermarket,
through its workshop equipment division, Hella Gutmann Solutions
(HGS), the ultimate in headlight alignment tools.
Correctly set headlights are vital in order for motorists to drive
safely in poor light conditions, which means that misalignment
directly impacts their effectiveness by reducing the amount of
light they can actually focus on the road in front of the vehicle.
Incorrect alignment is also an MoT test failure and, particularly
as many projector lights are now extremely bright, can cause
excessive dazzling to the eyes of other road users.
Despite these facts, along with blown bulbs, misaligned
headlights are a common sight during the hours of darkness.
Therefore, as a matter of course, workshops should offer a
lighting and alignment check for all of their customers. This
would not only help reduce the number of accidents caused by
defective lighting, but provide workshops with a legitimate additional
revenue stream.
In order to make this opportunity a reality for workshops, HGS
offers the SEG series, a new generation of alignment tools that
are able to measure and adjust even the most advanced headlight
systems, quickly and efficiently. However, reflecting the fact that the
requirements of workshops vary, the SEG range comes in several
different specifications.
While each features a digital luxmeter to precisely calculate the
glare rating of the low beam and the light intensity of the high, as well
as a high quality fresnel lens, the top of the range SEG V also comes
with automatic levelling, an 8.4” touchscreen, vehicle recognition via
car history and an USB interface, to provide the complete solution for
every current lighting configuration from halogen to Matrix LED high
beam assist.
“The constant and rapid development of headlamp systems
on modern vehicles presents serious challenges when ‘simple’
procedures such as alignment or replacement are required,” explains
Neil Hilton, the head of business development at HGS.
“Over the years, vehicle lighting has been transformed from
tungsten, to halogen, to xenon/HID, to Matrix LED and the latest Laser
Matrix, which has an astonishing range of 650 metres! This lighting
must have strict control systems to avoid blinding other road users;
these include automatic levelling using ride-height sensors, round
corner activation using steering angle sensors and automatic high
beam using windscreen mounted cameras.
“On these applications, headlamp replacement is now a complex
procedure as the component first needs to be adapted using basic
settings on a diagnostic device, such as a HGS mega macs tool, then,
if it’s not camera controlled, calibrated with a SEG V, for example. If
however, the system employs a camera, it will need to be calibrated
with specific ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) related
equipment, like the HGS CSC (camera & sensor calibration) tool.
“As many manufacturers already use a variety of these systems,
workshops need to be aware of the requirements when undertaking
service and repair on vehicles with any kind of adaptive
lighting. It is therefore vital that they partner with
businesses such as HGS, who are able to provide the
equipment, advice and support to help them tackle
the issues with confidence.”
LightsFeature
Setting the trends and
supporting the aftermarket
It is very easy to think of vehicle
lighting as meaning just headlights and
rear lights, but, although they are of
paramount importance to both driver and
public safety, lighting is a far broader and
varied subject, of which HELLA, the global
lighting and electronics specialist is in the
vanguard.
This fact is demonstrated by its many
long term relationships with vehicle
manufacturers around the world and
the pioneering concepts it has brought
to market through these collaborations.
These include LED, Matrix LED and HD
Matrix LED with laser high beam, as well
as the introduction of organic lightemitting
diode (OLED) technology into rear
combination lamps, for example.
Further showcasing the extent of its
expertise is its strategic partnership with
Faurecia, This followed successful pilot
projects for the development of innovative
interior lighting solutions and has
subsequently delivered dynamic-lighting
scenarios, for evermore personalised
cockpit environments.
These solutions have yielded interior
lighting that enables a variety of new
functionalities that can be adapted to the
different needs of passengers and driving
situations, such as ambient lighting for a
more comfortable, dynamic and versatile
environment in the cockpit. On entering
the vehicle for example, the occupants are
welcomed by personalised interior lighting
on the instrument panel, door panels and
seats.
Perhaps from an aftermarket
perspective, many of these developments
may seem rather irrelevant, but when
you consider the growing trend for LED
replacement headlight bulbs, that’s not
the case. In fact, it is an area that from a
legislative standpoint, the industry needs
to be aware of.
Although it is possible and indeed
sometimes beneficial for motorists to fit
upgrade bulbs, such as HELLA’s Lifetime,
Design or Performance models, they
must comply to ECE R37 regulation. Only
bulbs with an ‘E’ mark – which stipulates
that they comply to the global standard,
followed by a number that identifies the
country where the authorisation was
granted – are legal.
The problem with using LED
replacements for traditional halogen bulb
applications is that, unlike the HELLA
halogen upgrade examples mentioned,
they do not qualify for R37 approval and
therefore carry no ‘E’ mark, making them
LIGHTSFEATURE
New dimensions of
lighting technology
Audi is entering a new dimension in automotive lighting technology. Originally, vehicle lighting
in road traffic was primarily used for the safety of all road users. The digitization of headlights
and taillights offers unprecedented perspectives: light becomes a medium of external
communication and interaction, personalizes design and opens up new possibilities for design
and individualization for the customer.
The light has made a real leap in
technology: the development from
halogen light to xenon headlights
to LED technology in cars took less than
two decades. These milestones in new
technologies brought tangible added
value to customers. The Audi light not only
provided an ever-better view, but also
shaped the face of the models in every
era and extended everyday use to include
a communicative as well as aesthetic
dimension.
With the change in the light bulbs,
illumination and energy efficiency have
improved in equal measure. Digitisation is
now creating a further boost in innovation
and bringing completely new design
possibilities: light becomes intelligent.
Using light signals, the car interacts with
its environment. As early as 2003, the
then A8 offered the adaptive light with
automatic-dynamic light-width regulation,
before a camera on the windshield
recognized other road users in 2010.
Two years later, the brand underpinned
its innovative strength and pioneering
role in the R8: The introduction of the
dynamic blinker, which allows the display
of indicated changes of direction to be
detected from the corner of the eye,
represented a considerable safety gain –
to this day. After the premiere in the R8
LMX, Audi presented the LED headlights in
HD Matrix technology in the luxury sedan
A8 in 2017 with the laser as an additional
remote light – a world innovation in
large-scale production. Now the premium
manufacturer digitizes the Matrix LED
headlights and expands the variety even
further. The digital OLED rear lights in the
new Q5 have been opening the door to
car-to-X communication since this year
and allow new selectable taillight designs
for the first time in vehicle configuration.
Audi not only illuminates the road
intelligently, but also lends its models an
unmistakable personality with concise
signatures and dynamic lighting displays.
Customers already receive different light
signatures optionally and depending on
the model, further differentiations follow.
The dynamic flashing light or the effective
staging of the leaving and coming-home
functions when unlocking and leaving the
car give the light an emotional touch. In
the future, lighting technologies will make
driving even safer, the individuality of each
model even more visible and external
communication even more effective.
Tyre changing becomes leverless with
E-Cube’s ‘In control’
As the Gamechanging and totally
‘unique’ E-CUBE – a 48 volt
revolutionary new lightweight
and innovative mobile tyre servicing
unit maintains its popular interest from
ambitious mobile tyre fitment retailers
throughout Europe through constantl
improvements and upgrade including both
semi and fully automatic operation.
Exclusive designers and manufacturers
of this exciting ‘new generation’ of mobile
tyre fitment equipment – Netherlands
based Technomarketing Group (TMG) has
now recently launched yet another new
(patent pending) technology which again
elevates the tyre service industry to an
even higher level of professionalism and
efficiency.
Ralph Dubbeldam, Managing Director at
TMG explains, “ Up until now a mobile tyre
technician had to choose between using a
lever operated or lever-less tyre changing
unit with both working options giving
advantages and disadvantages related to
tyre complexity, user ergonomics, speed
and overall dimensions. But now TMG has
introduced the new ‘In Control’ system,
an ‘air-operated hook (with ECUBE) that
solidly grabs the tyre and moves along
with the wheel during its rotation.
“Throughout the entire process the
operator has complete control of both
the position and height of the hook to
reassuringly provide a smooth and safe
release of the upper bead with minimal
friction on the tyre’s inner liner to
guarantee a further innovative incentive
for using this ultra premium mobile tyre
service solution. In-Control gives an
operator constant control of the tyre
fitting process from beginning to end
and solves this age old problem once
and completely evaluates each fitment
situation on its individual merits.
The In Control facility is just the very
latest add-on retro-fit solution option to
E-CUBE which following extensive tests
on the most extreme tyres will become
available when the unit is officially
launched into the UK market during the
first quarter of 2021.
Mental Health and ResilienceAWARE
(7-hrs Driver’s CPC hours available)
Following on from the huge success of our FREE Mental Health Training Events & Roadshows held nationally in 2018 and 2019,
Network Training Partnership is conducting another event this coming February 10 th & 11 th.
‘It’s Not Just Vehicles That Break Down’
Focusing on the Roadside & Recovery industry, Emergency Services and the Military and held virtually,
through Zoom and AWARE Series TV, this year’s course will be Mental Health & ResilienceAWARE.
The course will not only raise awareness of mental health disorders and industry-related issues; the risk factors, signs, symptoms
and preventative measures but will provide essential guidance on ‘resilience’ during difficult times.
Resilience is defined as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress—such as
family and relationship problems, serious health problems, workplace or financial situations.
By identifying positive measures to help prevent and adapt we can improve employee health and mental wellbeing across these industries!
Please contact jane@ntplimited.co.uk to book your space or make a donation.
The courses are free to attend (including DCPC upload & certs, if required). Donations are welcome though and will
be passed on to industry charities who are actively supporting operators during these tough times.
FIRST STOP RECRUIT BUSINESS
CONSULTANTS TO COMPLETE
BRITISH MAP OF SUPPORT
The First Stop network
has recruited two retail
business consultants to
complete its support team for
new and existing partners, as it
accelerates plans to open 220
centres by 2024.
The First Stop area map for
Britain is now fully populated
with the appointments of Nick
Salt (Northern England and
Scotland) and Shaun Sweeney
(South West England and South
Wales).
Nick Salt has 12 years’
experience in automotive
wholesale for Kings Road
Tyres as an account manager
and a further three years at
International Tyres in a similar
role.
There is barely a tyre size he
hasn’t got an understanding
of having worked in the
commercial world with truck,
bus, off-the-road and industrial
tyres in the past, but the pull to
passenger products and a new
Nick Salt
journey with First Stop was too
compelling to ignore.
He said: “When working in
previous roles, I was heavily
involved with the Bridgestone
brand which was always so
highly respected. I gained firsthand
experience of the premium
quality of its products over the
years too, so to work for First
Stop and Bridgestone has always
been the ultimate aim.”
Shaun Sweeney has joined
the First Stop retail network
in a return to the industry he
originally made his name in,
when working in franchised
service departments for
Chrysler, Mitsubishi and
Mercedes Benz.
The 45-year-old from
Bridgend then enjoyed a
fruitful career in the food retail
industry, working as an area
sales manager for Delice de
France and a national accounts
manager for the Rich Products
Corporation, helping food
industry professionals compete
in foodservice and retail. Other
roles include spells at Mars and
McCain frozen food.
Upon returning to the
automotive sector, Shaun said
he was excited to be joining First
Stop at a time when the network
is evolving so rapidly with a new
corporate identity and dealer
philosophy – with plans to grow
significantly over the next four
years.
Shaun said: “This is a
massive opportunity for me,
as I am joining First Stop at the
beginning its journey to increase
its presence in the UK. To help
the network achieve its goals
here is something that I am
extremely excited about.
“My primary focus will be on
supporting our existing dealers
Shaun Sweeney
with help on growing sales,
while I will also be bringing new
dealers on board. Creating the
right customer experience is
vital and I want to support our
dealers with this. Both industries
are demanding arenas but by
understanding the needs of
the end-user, you can create a
similarly memorable experience
that customers will keep coming
back to.
First Stop’s Retail Manager
Mark Widdows said: “We’re
really excited about the team
we now have in place. Nick and
Shaun bring unique skill-sets
to the business and I know
they’ll play an instrumental role
in growing the network and
attracting partners that will push
us on to the next level.”
LSA SUPPLIES BRINGS A NEW BREED
OF MOTOR FACTOR TO MARKET
Started in lockdown, distributor aims for all-inclusive supply approach
LSA Supplies Ltd is the latest name to
commence trading in the automotive
aftermarket, supplying garages in the south
of England.
Started by Luke Sperring during the first
coronavirus lockdown, the business is
currently meeting demand from garages
by focusing on a specific range of products
and services, including Covid-19 safety
products.
Sperring previously worked for 10 years
at leading southern parts distributor Havant
Motor Factors, then owned by father
Alistair. Luke enjoyed working in all areas
of the business occupying operational
and sales roles, learning the intricacies
of running a successful motor factor and
providing him with the experience to set-up
LSA Supplies.
Since beginning trading with LSA
Supplies, the company has built up a
strong reputation for customer service
and supplies products such as oils, filters,
braking. batteries, rotating electrics and
tools from leading brands such as WAI,
Draper, Castrol, Varta and Brembo.
Director Sperring has some big plans for
the future: “We’ve received an excellent
reception from garages and have operated
an inclusive approach, working with other
motor factors to ensure a consistent supply
to garages, at a time when demand is so
high. Throughout the pandemic garages and
technicians must stay safe when working
on cars and so we’ve adapted our stock
to ensure just that, supplying WAI vehicle
sanitiser kits and the Steri-7 retail bottle.
“We’ve got big plans for growth and I
want to thank suppliers, particularly Richard
from WAI, for their support.”
Richard Welland, WAIglobal UK managing
director and IAAF vice-president said:
Luke Sperring
“LSA Supplies is a great example of how a
business, started in lockdown, can meet
the needs of an evolving market and bring
likeminded companies along with them.
They continue to show flexibility and the
company’s progression will be one to watch
in the coming years.”
DAYCO’S
Charlie
Huddleston
retires
Long-time industry stalwart,
Charlie Huddleston has retired
after a long and distinguished
aftermarket career.
Having spent a considerable
period of his working life with
FAI, Universal Automotive and
latterly, Dayco, Charlie was a
popular character with both
buying group members and
independents alike and always
enjoyed a social occasion,
where he’d display his warm
and friendly nature, as well as
his self-deprecating sense of
humour.
“Being already very familiar
with the product portfolio
from his time with our
former distributor, Universal
Automotive, Charlie joined
Dayco in 2015,” explained
National Sales Manager, Steve
Carolan. “He had many great,
long-term relationships with
our customers throughout
his territory in the north of
England and in Scotland, and
was a valuable member of the
team who played a large part
in the growth the business
has achieved over the last few
years.
“On his departure, the entire
Dayco Aftermarket team, both
here and our head office in
Italy, want to thank him for his
commitment and wish him, his
wife Susan, all the best and a
very happy and well-earned
