Trolley #4 Mural

A trolley once again sits in downtown Oskaloosa, but it will no longer take
you anywhere! Step into the alley between Hunter’s Gift & Coffee Cafe
and Taso’s Steakhouse to see the Oskaloosa Traction & Light Co. mural
painted by local artist Brant Bollman. “I am fascinated by a time gone by
when people would hop on the trolley to ride from Beacon to downtown
or from downtown to William Penn,” says Bollman. “The trolleys would
taxi on High Avenue and wait for their scheduled route times.”

On the back (west) side of the former Herald
building, local artist Matt Kargol installed three
bright yellow murals. “I wanted to make the
murals glow in a similar way to how it used to
glow late at night as I would return from an
away football game and the writers, editors,
and press operators would be working to get
the sports written and printed for the Saturday
morning paper,” says Kargol. “It was always
magical to drive by the printing press and the
beautiful glow that would emanate through the
window into the streets.”
John F. Lacey Mural

On the side of the building at the corner of 1st
Ave E and S Market, local artist Brant Bollman
painted a bold blue mural celebrating a figure
of local history: John F. Lacey. “General Lacey is
perhaps the most consequential person to ever
live in Mahaska County,” says Bollman. “He
went on to become a Civil War Hero, an 8-Term
Congressman, and the legislative father of the
National Park System.”

The Barnswallow Cottage Airbnb
Conveniently located off HWY 23 just 10 minutes
from the center of Oskaloosa, The Barnswallow
Cottage is a private, rural retreat nestled in the
Mahaska County countryside.
The charming 1949 farmhouse boasts three bedrooms and
two baths, can comfortably accommodate 15 guests, and
welcomes visitors of the furry, four-legged variety as well.
The dine-in kitchen opens to a back deck perfectly positioned
for admiring Iowa sunsets. There’s plenty of room to play
and roam the grounds—perfect for children, pets, and also
monarch butterfly and wildlife enthusiasts. A large living room
at the heart of the home offers space to gather for movies and
games, curl up with a book, or work at the writing desk.
The cottage is furnished with a uniquely curated blend of family
heirlooms, local craftsmanship, and pieces from Meredith’s
work in Hollywood. The vintage couch, for example, has
been in the family since the 1940s, while the loveseat was
saved from a movie production. In the kitchen, the cabinetry
is original, but the chairs were refinished from a film set and
the pie cupboard belonged to Meredith’s grandmother, Helen
Loynachan. The live-edge wood bench in one bedroom and
the magnetic knife board in the kitchen were both crafted by
local furniture designer, Jacob Howe.
Cozy quilts drape on flea market finds and antique
footboards that have been mounted on the walls. Dried
flower wreaths hang next to original artwork and vintage
mirrors. Victorian-style headboards are right at home
alongside sleek mid-century tables.
What makes The Barnswallow
Cottage so special—besides its scenic
location—is that its renovation was a
labor of local love. While Meredith
tackled the wood refinishing with her aunt, Sherrilyn Nikkel, she
sourced all renovation materials and work from contractors in
and around Mahaska County. “This is a community cottage,”
says Meredith. “Those who stay here contribute to the lives of
those who take care of it.” When guests stay, they’re not only
supporting Barnswallow, but also contributing and investing in
local community development.
A Small Business in Bloom
Just north of the cottage is the Barnswallow Flowers & Produce
farm. Barnswallow Flowers officially launched in 2018, but
Meredith Nunnikhoven and mother Kerrilyn have been growing
and selling flowers wholesale and to local buyers for many
years. What began as an endeavor to diversify the family farm
has grown to include a three-acre, chemical-free produce farm;
the fresh-cut flower operation that caters to flower lovers either
wanting bouquets or hosting celebratory events like weddings;
a newly-planted, six-acre, organic chestnut plot; and expansion
into local product development including hot sauces and
pepper flakes, relish, jams, and jellies.
Barnswallow also offers a floral CSA (community-supported
agriculture) program for bouquet pickup in Mahaska and
Marion Counties. Meredith adorns the cottage with seasonal
fresh and dried flower arrangements. Sharing the outdoor
beauty of the farm gives guests a fresh, sensory experience to
enjoy during their stay.

Fashion & Faith: Opening a Boutique During the Pandemic
In March 2020, the world came to a halt as
the uncertainty of Covid-19 shut down retail,
restaurants, and small and large businesses around
the globe. But in Oskaloosa, Katie Johnston’s
dream was just getting started.
Years earlier, one of Katie’s friends had introduced her to
Betsey’s Boutique Shop on social media. The original Betsey’s
was founded in 2011 to fill a need for retail in the small
community of Rockford, Ohio. Through social media and online
sales, Betsey’s grew to ship more than 500,000 packages in all
50 states. No doubt some of those packages landed on Katie’s
doorstep. As she continued to follow and shop, Katie grew to
admire the Betsey’s brand, style, and business model.
Then in fall 2019, Katie had the opportunity to visit one of a
handful of Betsey’s brick-and-mortar franchises in Oklahoma. “I
went into the store with the intention of shopping,” says Katie.
“But I left with not only a giant bag full of clothes—but also a
dream to bring a brick-and-mortar Betsey’s to Oskaloosa.”
Katie held onto that dream while she continued to raise
her family with her husband Jesse and operate her in-home
daycare of ten years. When in March 2020, Katie announced
to friends, family, and clients her plan to quit her job and close
her in-home daycare business, little did she know the big
Covid-19 shutdown would happen a week later. “To say I was
overwhelmed with ‘what if’s’ would be an understatement,”
Katie says. “But through a ton of prayer and a huge step of
faith, we kept pushing forward.”
On the bright, beautiful morning of August 15, 2020, in
downtown Oskaloosa, a line of expectant shoppers—with
masks and hand sanitizer handy—began at the door of 105
High Ave W, ran down the sidewalk, and wrapped around the
corner building at the end of the block. The first brick-andmortar
Betsey’s in the state of Iowa was open for business!
Women from around Iowa and neighboring states made the
drive to check out Katie’s shop on the exact day Katie had
always planned to open—even before the pandemic. She’s
thankful that she’s been able to keep her doors open and
continue welcoming Betsey’s shoppers from near and far,
especially during a challenging time for retail. “The reception
has been overwhelming. Oskaloosa has welcomed us with
open arms and shown support in ways we could not have
anticipated,” says Katie.
Katie’s store has helped bolster visits to Oskaloosa’s historic
downtown and nearby shops. “Because of Betsey’s social
media notoriety, we get to show off our amazing community to
people from all over the midwest!”

Tassel Ridge Winery is located in the rolling hills of Mahaska
County four miles northwest of Oskaloosa, ten miles southeast
of Pella, and just south of Iowa Highway 163.
On a scenic ridge, where once existed a farm field planted to
a corn-bean rotation for many years, the vineyards of Tassel
Ridge Winery now stretch into the distance. Since opening to
the public in 2006, Tassel Ridge has grown to become one
of the largest wineries in Iowa. And its wines have won more
than 300 medals in competitions throughout Iowa, Minnesota,
Florida, New York, California, and Texas.
The winery produces about 40 red, rosé, and white wines
ranging from dry to sweet—some fizzy, some dessert wines—
which are all available for sale at the winery. Many of the
varieties are also for sale in 435 retailers across Iowa.
The winery is open and visitors are welcome. As of January
2021, Tassel Ridge continues to require face masks, which
are available at the door. Visitors can purchase wine by the
bottle and shop in the gift store for dipping oils, chocolate and
caramel sauces, and wine-related gifts and merchandise. From
the Visitors’ Gallery, it is also possible to look down into the
cellar where Tassel Ridge wine is made.
Not only is Tassel Ridge a must-stop for breathtaking views
and bottles of vino, but it’s also a “leader in developing new
cold climate grape varieties in an effort to expand its reach to
the dry wine market.” (Distilled Opinion, Food & Drink Blog).
In its four vineyards throughout Mahaska County, Tassel Ridge
grows eleven different grape varieties on about 75 acres. Nine
grape varieties are Northern Climate grapes, one is a native-
American grape variety, and the other is a French-American
hybrid. All of the varieties were selected for their winter
hardiness and ability to produce high-quality fruit in Iowa’s
short growing season. Tassel Ridge is also growing several
new varieties on a trial basis to learn if the new varieties will
help produce better wines.
At the end of the day, it all comes back to the rich Iowa soil.
“Our soils vary depending on the vineyard,” says owner Bob
Wersen. “The vineyard at Tassel Ridge is a loam-loess blend
with pockets of clay. Loess soils are windblown small gravel
that improve the soil’s drainage and productivity. Our other
three vineyards have heavier soils with more clay. All of our
vineyards produce excellent quality grapes.”

A Dazzling Display in Historic Downtown Oskaloosa
Every holiday season, 250,000+ LED Christmas
lights illuminate the facades of buildings
surrounding Oskaloosa’s City Square Park.
Stroll through the Square with a cup of hot cocoa in one hand
and your shopping bags in the other. Listen to the Christmas
music playing over outdoor speakers. Climb up the stairs to
the historic bandstand, where you can take in a 360-degree
view of Painting with Lights. ...And you might just think you’re
the star of your very own made-for-TV Christmas movie.
Painting with Lights is the first display of its kind in Iowa, and is
the result of countless volunteer hours and generous donations
from individuals and businesses each year. The brilliant display
of lights covers all four sides of the town square and takes
several weeks to put up. Fundraising and planning for the
project happen year-round.
Thinking about a visit to see the lights? Plan to make a day
of it. Around and nearby the Square, you’ll find coffee shops
and cafes, restaurants, and retail including clothing boutiques,

Did you know that 17,000 years ago during the Ice Age, woolly mammoths
roamed Mahaska County? In 2010, a local Oskaloosa man and his sons
unearthed part of a mammoth skeleton on their land. The discovery
launched several years of bone excavations at the dig site. Now, Mahaska
County Conservation is collaborating with the Communication Research
Institute of William Penn University to re-create a full-size woolly mammoth
that will be on display for visitors at the Environmental Learning Center.
The Environmental Learning Center at Caldwell Park, which opened in
2019, is conveniently located just outside Oskaloosa on Hwy 92 and
connects to the Mahaska County Recreation Trail (see map on facing
page). Visitors can see live animals, interactive displays about Mahaska
County’s history and ecosystems, and a 1,000-gallon fish aquarium.
Mahaska County’s Freedom Rock, which was designed and printed by
artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II, is also located on the site. Weighing in at
23,600 pounds, it was the 39th rock to be painted in the state and depicts
Mahaska County’s military history including Oskaloosa’s first member of
the Women’s Army Corps as well as several generals and admirals who
served in the Civil War, WWI, WWII, and the Gulf War.
For added family fun, try a new outdoor recreational activity, such as
geocaching. With GPA-enabled cell phones, your whole family can easily
get in on the fun of hiding and seeking containers, called “geocaches” or
“caches”, at specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world—
including near the Environmental Learning Center, along the recreation
trail, and throughout Mahaska County. To get started, download the
