T
UESDAY’S win against
Linfield was exactly
what everyone associated
with the Club was
looking for after a bumpy couple
of month, but the only way
we can make the most of it is by
claiming another three points
today.
That will obviously be easier
said than done because, while
every game in this division is
tough, there’s no doubting that
Glenavon provide a particularly
strong challenge.
Gary Hamilton has done a great
job over the years and no matter
how many players he loses or
what changes he’s forced into
making, he always finds a way to
get the most of what’s available
to him and seems to unearth a
new quality player a couple of
times a season.
They’ll come here confident of
getting a victory but we have
made big improvements since
our meeting at Mourneview Park
last month.
That was demonstrated in midweek
when the players refused
to accept what looked like being
an inevitable defeat to Linfield.
After falling behind early on, we
got ourselves back into the game
with a quick equaliser and really
stepped up our control after that
but, typical Linfield, they found a
way to get themselves back in
front. Fortunate as the goal was,
“
Our reaction to every setback on Tuesday
night was phenomenal and the players
deserve credit for that attitude.
”
4
that’s why they’re Champions -
top teams always find a way.
Our reaction to every setback on
Tuesday night was phenomenal
and the players deserve credit
for that attitude.
Not only did they have the hunger
to drag themselves level
again, they kept at it to eventually
get in front and then extend
the lead.
We have learned some harsh
lessons this season and the
Crusaders game earlier this
month was a case in point. We
would have been deserved
winners had we not conceded
with practically the last kick.
Against Linfield, we decided our
best form of defence was to go
on the attack and, as
it turned out, getting
that fourth
goal was vital because
the Blues
pulled one back
with a great freekick
in the last
few seconds.
My big regret
from the game
was that our
supporters
weren’t there
to see it.
Solitude
would have
been bouncing
on a
night like
that but all
we can do
between now
and the day
the Red Army
are back is
continue to
improve and
find the levels
of consistency
we
know
we can.

E
OIN Teggart could barely
have enjoyed a more
dramatic introduction
to the Danske Bank
Premiership but, after savouring
Tuesday night’s breathtaking
victory over Linfield at
Solitude, the 18-year-old has
urged Cliftonville to keep their
momentum going by seeing off
Glenavon this afternoon.
A former member of the Reds’
Academy, Teggart joined Portsmouth
in the summer of 2018
and returned to Solitude on loan
earlier this month.
Having featured for Cliftonville’s
Under-18 side at the age of 16,
the pacey attacker has turned
out for the Pompey first-team
and Under-23s during his twoand-a-half
years at Fratton Park
and has also represented Northern
Ireland at Under-19 and
Under-17 level.
Though maintaining match fitness
and sharpness will be the
key objective of his parent Club
for the rest of the season, Teggart
is determined to play his
part in helping the Reds climb
the standings in the month
ahead - starting today.
“It will be a tough game and
Glenavon are a good side but
hopefully we’ll be able to take
the confidence of the Linfield win
into the weekend and get the
three points and keep trying to
move up the table,” says Teggart,
who replaced two-goal
Conor McMenamin in the closing
stages of that defeat of the
Blues.
“I thought we were brilliant on
Tuesday night.
“The lads showed great spirit to
come back from a goal down on
two occasions and, after going in
front, we dug in.”
Of particular encouragement to
boss Paddy McLaughlin has been
how his team have risen to the
challenge of falling behind in
games.
An unfortunate habit that has
been repeated too often this
season, Cliftonville have recently
demonstrated a resilience that
had been lacking earlier in the
campaign.
Trailing to Dungannon Swifts,
Crusaders and Linfield in their
three outings to date in 2021,
the Reds roared back to claim
full points from the first and last
games in that triumvirate - and
were seconds away from doing
so against the Crues.
Disappointing as it was to concede
a last-gasp leveller in the
North Belfast Derby, Teggart
believes that painful experience
was turned into a positive in
midweek when Cliftonville set
about extending their advantage
to ensure there would be no late
heartbreak.
“I was at the Crusaders game a
few weeks back but my international
clearance wasn’t through
yet,” he recalls.
“It was disappointing to concede
late on but we learned from that.
“It was great to make my debut
late on against Linfield and
hopefully I’ll be able to kick on in
the coming weeks.”
With the coronavirus pandemic
affecting football at all levels
around the globe, Teggart is
grateful for the opportunity to
be involved and explains that
Pompey - where he wears the
same number 36 jersey he has
been assigned at Solitude - are
just as pleased with his loan
arrangement.
“With the way things are with
Covid, Portsmouth were happy
for me to stay back in Belfast
and try to get some game time
until the summer,” he concludes.
“Then we’ll be able to assess
things from there.”

W
HEN they trudged
off the field in the
wake of a disappointing
home
defeat to Linfield on January 2,
Glenavon could not have predicted
quite how long it would
be until they returned to action.
Almost a month later and, following
the postponement of
proposed Danske Bank Premiership
clashes with derby rivals
Portadown, Glentoran and Dungannon
Swifts either side of the
NI Football League’s two-week
Covid break, Gary Hamilton’s
side are finally set to kick a ball
in anger again.
Having pocketed full points from
their most recent away trip - a
December 19 showdown with
Warrenpoint Town - the Lurgan
Blues will be bidding for the vital
victory that can help them narrow
the gap to the top six.
Hamilton has been typically busy
in the transfer market since his
men were last in action, this
week welcoming Dergview defender
Lee McNulty and striker
Josh Doyle from Leinster Senior
League outfit Bluebell United to
add to the arrivals of former
Shamrock Rovers duo Craig
Hyland and Gavin McCaffrey.
Goalkeeper Hyland appears an
almost certain starter this afternoon
with Hamilton recently
revealing that both long-time
custodian Jonny Tuffey and his
deputy stopper James Taylor are
to exit Lurgan at the end of the
season.
Former Northern Ireland international
keeper Tuffey, who enjoyed
a spell with Linfield after
returning from Scottish Premiership
stints at Partick Thistle,
Inverness Caledonian Thistle and
St Johnstone, has refused the
offer of a new three-year deal at
Mourneview, while promising
young defender Daniel Larmour -
snapped up from Carrick Rangers
in the summer of 2018 - this
week completed an anticipated
move to Crusaders following
speculation over the penning of
a pre-contract agreement that
would have brought him to
Seaview in the summer.
It is with a slightly different dynamic,
then, that Glenavon approach
this afternoon’s contest
in comparison to their most
recent bout with Cliftonville in
the middle of December.
On that occasion, Danny Purkis
banked a deserved equaliser
shortly after Daire O’Connor’s
cool finish had put the Reds
ahead in front of the Sky Sports
cameras, but Hamilton’s charges
would endure greater frustration
on their next home outing when
Linfield hit from behind to claim
maximum points.
A battle for consistency has
dogged Glenavon all season and,
after starting their campaign
with a devastating loss at the
hands of Portadown, draws with
Glentoran - when they rallied
after being reduced to nine men
- Dungannon Swifts and Coleraine
were finally followed up
by a maiden win that saw two
unanswered goals dispatched
past Ballymena United.
A Windsor Park loss to the Blues
pre-dated a superb comeback
success over the Crues at
Mourneview, where Jack
O’Mahony, Peter Campbell and
Matthew Fitzpatrick were on
target in the aftermath of the
visitors’ early opener, while
the concession of two late
goals at Larne denied the Lurgan
Blues what would have been
an impressive victory.
The aforementioned encounters
with Cliftonville and Warrenpoint
duly followed before a combination
of coronavirus breaks and
inclement weather conditions
engineered a situation that has
seen Glenavon play just once in
the last 40 days - meaning it
goes without saying they’ll be
champing at the bit today.
