Dear Members,
I was watching the news the other day and a quote
flashed up on the screen which said, “dream with your
eyes open”. This pandemic has opened our eyes to so
many things, our resilience, the kindness and love shown
by our families, friends, neighbours and even strangers.
Tuggerah Lakes Art Society has managed to cope as
well.

THE ENTRANCE GALLERY
WIA 2021 Exhibition returns this year together
with the Central Coast International Women’s
Day Expo (6 Mar) and the WIA Artisan’s Market
(weekend 6 & 7 Mar). The launch will be held at
6pm Friday 5 March at The Entrance Gallery.
Having to cancel the launch and Artisan’s Market for our
Home Baked Event, and even though our viewing
numbers were low, no doubt due to the pandemic, the
heat wave and then rain rain rain, the exhibition looked
stunning. Despite all of this, success of the exhibition can
be measured by the outstanding art beautifully presented
and reinforced from comments by visitors - it’s
something we should all be proud of as members of our
Society. My thanks to Donna Cole and her helpers who
made it happen.
Also my thanks to the committee and all the members
who have helped TLAS not only survive, but progress!
I invite you to join us for our first Members’ Meeting for
2021 on Thursday 25 th February and participate in our
Women in Art Expo and Artisan’s Markets in March.
I read somewhere that, “dreaming with your eyes
open” means being alert to challenges but refusing to let
them stop you. So let’s make 2021 a year that we would
want to remember, not one we would like to forget.
2021, here we come!

Patricia Newell-Dunkley — ARTISTIC EGG DECORATING
WWW.PATRICIASARTWORLD.COM
omorrow morning before you crack your
T
breakfast egg, and dip your bread soldiers into its
succulent golden yoke, stop and consider that you
might be able to turn this beautifully shaped,
delicately coloured piece of nature into a fabulous
work of art.
At the same time, it could start you on to a new and fascinating
craft that will give you hours of pleasure, and possible profit. Join
with me and become egg-bound, in this most pleasant and
creative pastime.
Egg decorating has been with us since the 13 th Century when, as
Folk Art, it was customary to paint eggs and distribute them as
gifts, especially at Easter and other religious celebrations. This
devout and deeply symbolic ritual is still continued and carried on
all over the world.
A hand painted, envelope cut, decorated ostrich egg
Hen egg decorated with glitter
Chicken, Duck, Turkey, Goose, Emu,
Ostrich, and Rhea Eggs.
Egg shapes in general. Porcelain,
plastic, wood, foam.
A small turkey egg decorated with beads
A four cut goose egg with a decorated egg
inside.
The list is long and interesting,
choose whatever ovoid shape
takes your imagination, and enjoy
the project.
Start simply with a small egg and
work your way up. Paint an easy
design, or add some ribbon, and
beads. In no time you will have a
work of art.

To cut and hinge eggs, you will require special tools.
A good craft shop will be able to supply all of your needs. Happy Egging.

Karen Williams - Finding New Ideas - WHY?
www.karenjanewilliams.weebly.com
“Nothing is new under the sun,” right? So why am I suggesting we take a year
endeavouring to find new ideas? Ideas seam to re-surface with a modern twist but
really it’s about that wonderful, exciting thing called “creativity.” Using our creativity
to find new ideas can help us maintain interest, find purpose and stay connected in
community with others. That’s life. Life can be boring, stale and lived in a rut or a
lifetime of learning. Research shows learning is certainly beneficial but I’ll spare you
the details.
Have you ever felt that “sweet spot” or been “in the zone” when painting, making or doing anything
creative? Relaxation Response is a state in which your are fully engaged with a task and challenged by
your work in a manner that is not stressful but satisfying. It can be a sustaining, highly therapeutic, calming
process that employs engagement between hands and brain. Jackpot! That’s what we need more of this
year - calming, relaxation with less stress and worry.
So, let’s start the first of 10 discussions on where and how we might find these precious new ideas. You
are allowed to say (out loud to yourself) “I knew that” but it’s good to be reminded, plus maybe, if you
keep pondering, thinking and digging around each point you may unearth a treasure.
Ideas for February
Starting is important so let’s start this year with a positive mind
set and a willingness to surrender pre-conceptions. Habits are
helpful and necessary but if you disrupt a daily routine and/or
working practice it can enhance creativity. I’m not suggesting
huge changes to throw you off balance but small things can help
change your perspective.
For example, painting with a different tool - a thicker (or thiner)
paint brush, credit card or even your fingers. Try a different
surface to paint on. Re-arrange the furniture in your painting area
were you suddenly get a different view out the window.
There is more than one way to do things.
Start this year with a determination to find time and go slow.
Set aside time for yourself, put it in the diary, regularly. The chores
will always be there. Strive for the balance between
responsibilities and self-care.
You get that “Ah Ah” moment, “Suddenly, I see” in environments
that are peaceful and non-busy.
It takes mulling time, mediation, awake dreaming to let ideas
surface and grow.
It takes time to persist and develop a thought into a usable idea.
It takes time to put down your work and come back to ponder it
with fresh eyes. You’ve probably had the experience of being
stumped when doing a puzzle or crossword. Then having put it
aside and come back to in later to find that the answer leaps out
at you.
New ideas take time - sit and ponder those four words (with a
cool drink in hand.)

GOOD TIMES WORKSHOPS - Corinne Adams
corinne@tlas.org.au
Hi everyone,
2021! Can you believe it? Finally out of the clutches of 2020, what a year!
Fingers crossed for a COVID free year so we can get back to our artistic selves.
This year will see some new guidelines for our
workshops, namely the wearing of masks, which
although uncomfortable, I think will become the
new norm throughout the year.
Rasheeda has registered TLAS as a Covid safe
business so now we will use the QR code entry.
We are already recording details, sanitising &
social distancing so this should be readily
accepted as well. Class numbers will also be
reduced so get in quick to secure your spot.
Marlene Palaygi will start us off on February 20 th
with watercolours.
Peter Tassell will tutor us with oils in our first Plein
Air workshop for this year on March 20th on the
Long Jetty foreshores, hoping for nice weather on
the day.
Our 3 rd workshop with Scott Denholm on April
10 th is still in doubt with the Queensland border
closures still in place. Will keep you all updated.
May 15 th sees Sylvana Natoli with Gold leaf
application followed by oils on June 12 th with
Christine Ireland, then Judith Hoste on July 17 th
with acrylics.
WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP
with Marlene Palagyi
CWA Hall, 1 Pacific Street, Long Jetty
Saturday 20 February 2021
9:30am to 3:00pm
All these workshops currently have vacancies so
once again I ask please support our local artists by
booking.
Members $20 Non Members $25. Non refundable
bookings. Please Note: COVID restrictions apply
including the wearing of a mask.
I would also like to ask all our TLAS Members to help
us find a business or company willing to sponsor us
for another 12 months as without some injection of
monies our workshops will be unachievable with
much higher fees and the very real possibility of
having to find another venue to rent, not only for our
workshops but for our academy day and our
occasional exhibitions.
So please put your thinking caps on and ask around.
We can have multiple sponsors to share the load so if
anyone has a favour to call in, please do. If you know
of anyone please inform Rasheeda or myself and we
will take it from there.
As always;
Art is an adventure that never ends.
Cheers Corinne
