Festive season shoppers 

good for Papanui retailers

A SHOPPING boom in Papanui 

during the festive season made it 

one of the suburbs with the largest 

retail spending increase across the 

city. 

A report by economic development 

agency, ChristchurchNZ, 

revealed spending in December 

shot up four per cent city-wide, 

and nine per cent in the city 

centre, compared to data from the 

same month in 2019. 

Along with an 18 per cent 

increase in Papanui, Lyttelton 

and Spreydon also had the largest 

growth in spending. 

The growth follows a tough 

financial year for the city, with 

the absence of international tourists, 

a lockdown, and alert level 

changes. 

Garden City Produce on Cranford 

St only opened in November 

last year. Owner Daryl Morris has 

no regrets setting up a new business 

in the midst of a pandemic. 

The family business saw 

demand surge in December, 

particularly leading up to 

Christmas and has been “steady” 

ever since. Berries, he said, were 

the most popular purchase.

member of, opposed the plan. 

“When you hold up traffic and 

keep it on the road for longer, it 

uses more carbon so it’s a bit of 

a farce when we claim climate 

change and say we’re going to 

save the planet. 

“A big chunk of the population 

isn’t going to use the cycleways 

so they’re [council] going to try 

and force them out of cars and I 

think the public is smart enough 

to know that that’s the agenda 

that seems to be going on.” 

Keown said the cost of the 

plan, an estimated $20 million, 

is far beyond what the community 

board was expecting. 

“It makes no sense.”

I would like all road users to 

be safe. 

However, I don’t think 

turning a busy four-lane road 

into a two-lane road to make 

way for an over engineered 

cycleway, paid for by cars, is the 

answer to traffic congestion and 

cycle safety. 

I strongly feel those who are 

pushing for us to cycle and ride 

the bus need to lead by example. 

This includes the mayor and all 

the People’s Choice councillors 

and their staff, including the 

roading engineer. 

There are plenty of cargo 

bikes and weather proof trailers 

for bikes that will carry any gear 

they need that doesn’t fit into a 

backpack, or they can take the 

bus. 

They can be true leaders and 

do what they want the rest of 

us to do with no complaints 

or excuses, starting now, 

they can cycle to the public

Cancer Society shuttle service gets boost 

THE CANCER Society’s 

Canterbury West Coast division 

shuttle service received a boost 

recently with a combined 

donation of almost $13,000 from 

23 South Island-based Lions 

clubs. 

THe free shuttle service 

transports patients staying 

in the Cancer Society’s 

accommodation, Daffodil 

House in Merivale and Daffodil 

Lodge in Riccarton, to and from 

radiation and chemotherapy 

appointments at Christchurch 

Hospital. 

Janice Porter-Hoare, 

fundraising and events manager 

for the Cancer Society’s CWC 

division, said that the Lions 

Clubs’ significant donation was 

a huge help towards funding the 

$65,000 required to operate the 

shuttle each year. 

“The shuttle currently operates 

from 7.30am until 9pm Monday 

to Friday, which translates to 

approximately 16,000 individual 

patient trips. Given that the 

patients we are providing our 

service for, come from all over 

the South Island it is fabulous 

to see local Lions Clubs from a 

variety of regions supporting 

this Christchurch-based service,” 

Porter-Hoare said. 

Porter-Hoare acknowledged 

that this was the fourth 

consecutive year that the Lions 

Clubs had donated to the shuttle 

service. 

“The late John Cramond from 

Motueka organised the first 

donation in 2017 after having 

used the shuttle service himself 

while having cancer treatment 

in Christchurch,” Porter-Hoare 

said. 

“Sadly John passed away last 

year, but his legacy lives on in 

this donation, which is extremely 

important to us given that we 

anticipate the demand for the 

shuttle service to grow even 

further during 2021.”

Importing delays a concern

improving every week – about 

10 per cent a week, even with no 

advertising. We didn’t know what 

to expect. 

“It was busy because of Christmas, 

but January was actually 

busier with more people knowing 

where we are.” 

In spite of the holiday season 

ending, Morris was feeling 

optimistic for the year ahead. 

“I’m an optimist and always 

look on the bright side. I wouldn’t 

have opened [the business] otherwise.” 

The same can be said at Black 

Sheep on Papanui Rd – the 

country’s leading retailer of 

electric scooters, e-bikes, and 

hoverboards. 

Owner Luke Ambrose said 

there was a “big demand” for 

products all year, but December 

proved to be different. 

He was relieved the business 

did not suffer too greatly last year, 

however, delays in importing 

products overseas were the main 

concern currently. 

“December was quite busy, last 

year was a lot busier than 2019,” 

he said. 

“People seem to be spending 

their money on bikes because 

they can’t go anywhere [overseas].

The report said, popular items 

on the shopping list included 

apparel, home and recreational 

goods, personal items, groceries, 

and alcohol. 

However, fuel and automotive 

spending decreased by five per 

cent – a trend in recent years 

following a push for residents to 

use alternative transport. 

Spending on clothing and 

personal items saw the greatest 

growth in December, with 

domestic visitor spend up 20 

per cent compared to the same 

period in 2019. 

“Across the city, retail spending 

was robust in December 2020 as 

consumers prepared for Christmas,” 

the ChristchurchNZ report 

said. 

“With December being the 

first month of the summer and 

holiday season, the impact of 

closed borders on the visitor 

economy has become more 

apparent and will continue to do 

so as the season progresses.” 

Camera cradles to help 

track coastline change 

THE PUBLIC will be able to 

help track how New Brighton’s 

coastline is changing over time. 

Camera cradles have been 

installed at New Brighton Pier 

to encourage people to take part 

in the CoastSnap community 

science project. 

CoastSnap relies on the 

public taking photos at the same 

locations at different times and 

sending them to the city council. 

This will help determine 

how coastlines are changing 

over time due to human activity 

and natural processes such as 

storms, rising sea levels and 

day-to-day changes in the beach 

structure. 

Cradles have also been set up 

at Taylors Mistake to track how 

its coastline is changing.

planning and strategic transport 

David Griffiths: “We have set 

up camera cradles at Taylors 

Mistake and on the New 

Brighton Pier in the hope that 

visitors to those locations will 

take part in the project by 

taking a photo and sharing it on 

the CoastSnap app, via Twitter 

or Instagram, or by emailing 

coastsnapchch@ccc.govt.nz

into valuable coastal data that 

is used by coastal scientists to 

understand and forecast how 

coastlines might change in the

CoastSnap will help us to better 

understand how the beaches 

respond to changes in wave conditions, 

weather and extreme 

storm events. 

“Every photo that is taken will 

add to a community database 

that will be used by scientists and 

planners to map shoreline changes. 

That information will help 

us to improve how we manage 

treasured coastal environments, 

so please get snapping. 

“There’s a sign at each camera 

cradle site explaining what you 

need to do so it is an easy project 

for people to get involved in.’’ 

The CoastSnap app can be

CHRISTCHURCH’S homegrown 

garden festival, Grow 

Ōtautahi, offers a three-day 

feast of food, design, outdoor 

living and sustainability in 

March. 

Set in the Botanic Gardens, 

the festival is free will feature 

a host of top chefs from 

around the region who will 

share their culinary skills. 

Festival goers will also be 

able to sample locally sourced 

food, explore innovative 

landscape design, take part in 

workshops and masterclasses, 

learn about food science and 

experience gardening through

Festival director Sandi 

MacRae says that Grow 

Ōtautahi has been designed 

especially for the garden 

city.

the festival will appeal

interests, offering plenty of 

opportunities for exploration.

Perfect job for an interest in nature 

Dean Pendrigh is the 

collections curator for 

the water garden, azalea 

garden and the pinetum in 

the Botanic Gardens and 

has been working there for 

the past 35 years. He talks 

to Ella Somers 

SKILLED: Dean Pendrigh tends to the plants in the Botanic Gardens. He has always had 

an interest in nature. 

A PASSION for nature led Dean 

Pendrigh to pursue a botanical 

career immediately after high 

school and he started his 

four-year apprenticeship at the 

Botanic Gardens in 1986. 

His apprenticeship included a 

brief scholarship to Melbourne, 

on his return he continued working 

at the gardens. 

Pendrigh said he has “always 

had an interest in nature” but it 

wasn’t until high school when his 

uncle introduced him to orchids 

that “really got me interested in 

plants and native plants as well.” 

He enjoys botanical work 

because every season is different 

and “something will be far better 

one year and not the other,” he 

said. 

“I like the biogeography and 

learning about where plants 

come from and how plants react 

to other plants and in different 

countries.” 

As well as maintaining the 

collections and keeping careful 

plant records, a large part of Pendrigh’s 

job includes tasks such as 

weeding, pruning, and cutting 

hedges. 

Watering takes up a lot of time 

as well because “a lot of my areas 

don’t have any actual automated 

irrigation so we do it by hand,” 

he said.

“You get to know the name of 

a plant and then a botanist will 

change it,” Pendrigh said. 

“Sometimes you’ll change a 

label and then they’ll change it 

back to the original name.” 

Pendrigh said that while he 

gets a lot of good comments 

from people who come through 

the garden, “a lot of people 

don’t realise how much work is 

involved,” he said. 

In comparison to other trades 

as well, it’s not recognised as 

much as it should be. 

“There is a lot of knowledge 

that you need to know, and it 

takes a long time to build up that 

knowledge, especially that plant 

knowledge,” he said. 

“The names of plants you have 

to learn as well, it’s like learning 

another language.” 

Pendrigh’s passion for 

“everything botanical” has 

inspired him to travel to 

places across the world where 

interesting flora lives, including 

Africa. 

“They’ve got a very diverse 

flora,” he said. 

“It increased my interest in 

plants even more seeing them in 

their natural habitat.” 

He doesn’t have a favourite 

plant but if he had to name his 

favourite plant group, it would be 

plants from the southern hemisphere, 

New Zealand, Australia, 

and South Africa in particular. 

“There’s some interesting links 

between the floras of those countries,” 

Pendrigh said. 

“And because I’ve seen them in 

the wild, you appreciate them a 

lot more.” 

One of the most interesting 

visitors that the Botanic Gardens 

has had in Pendrigh’s time was 

a visit from the Dalai Lama in 

1992. 

“He planted a himalayan pine 

tree in my area,” Pendrigh said. 

Unfortunately, the tree was 

stolen a week after it was planted 

and neither the thief nor the 

Dalai Lama’s tree were ever 

found. 

The tree that now grows where 

the Dalai Lama’s one used to be 

“is one that I actually planted,” 

Pendrigh said.

Yacht club to celebrate 100 years 

PLEASANT POINT Yacht Club celebrates 

its centennial this weekend. 

The club, now based in South New 

Brighton Park, began in 1921 on the shores 

of the estuary just behind where the South 

New Brighton School is today. The area was 

then known as Pleasant Point Domain. 

In 1929 the club moved across to the 

western shore to an area of mud flats at the 

mouth of the Avon River that would become 

known as Rat Island. 

Over the years, the club built up and 

improved the land together with the club 

facilities and held summer sailing and 

racing programmes, teaching hundreds of 

children and adults how to sail. That was 

until the first of the Canterbury earthquakes 

on September 4, 2010 damaged the 

buildings and land beyond repair. 

In the 10 years since, it found a new site 

and has built a new yacht club (opened in 

September 2019) in South New Brighton 

Park – just a stone’s throw from where it all 

began in 1921. 

The centennial celebrations will provide 

a great opportunity to relive the highs and 

lows of the club’s 100 years, especially the 

last 10 years of the rebuild. 

The celebrations kick off with a noggin 

‘n natter on Friday night, on Saturday, the 

Sullivan Cup, which is the club’s main open 

event, will be sailed, coupled with another 

major trophy, the Arch Lamb trophy for the 

Sunburst class. 

The races will feature multi-hulls, trailer 

yachts and senior and junior racing dingy 

classes and are open to other yacht club 

members. 

Saturday’s sailing will be followed by a 

celebration dinner. 

On Sunday, the club will run its Classic 

Yacht Race, first sailed at the club’s 75th 

celebrations. This will be coupled with a 

display of classic boats of all types owned 

by members of the Classic Boat Group of 

Canterbury. There will be plenty for the 

public to see on Saturday and Sunday.

Make a great first impression before your buyers even get inside! 

First impressions always count, and it will 

certainly matter when potential buyers 

come to view your home. Before potential 

customers have set foot inside your house, 

it’s likely that they have already formed their 

first impression of your house. If you want 

your house to stand out then you will need to 

work on what your house looks like from the 

outside first. 

What does this mean though? Imagine you 

are the buyer as you walk through your front 

yard, look at all the things that you think are 

unappealing – a hard to unlock or open gate, 

broken fence palings, weeds growing through 

the cracks in the footpath. There are so many 

little things that could turn off potential 

buyers, so it’s best to go through and fix 

those little things up. 

• Mow and edge trim your lawns, fertilise 

them ahead of time so they are nice and 

green for the marketing campaign 

• Waterblast your paths and driveway 

• Wash down your house or give it a touchup 

coat of paint if required

Insurance policies, like any legal document 

tend to have a lot of ‘fine print’ which a lot of 

us tend to ‘speed read’ over – but what are 

you missing? 

It is important to check your policy to find out 

what your requirements are when you have 

a rental property. You must have insurance 

on both the dwelling and the contents as 

this covers fixtures and fittings, like carpets, 

curtains, and even internal walls, and even if 

the tenants have insurance their own policy 

will not cover these things. 

One thing that is very important is the 

frequency of inspections, and what is 

required. I know my own insurance policy

your neighbourhood and see which homes

and make some notes as to what makes them

accidental or intentional, not to mention if 

the property was contaminated by meth!
