change
THE PUBLIC will be able to
help track how New Brighton’s
coastline is changing over time.
Camera cradles have been
installed at New Brighton Pier to
encourage people to take part in
the CoastSnap community science
project.
CoastSnap relies on the public
taking photos at the same
locations at different times and
sending them to the city council.
This will help determine how
coastlines are changing over time
due to human activity and natural
processes such as storms, rising
sea levels and day-to-day changes
in the beach structure.
Camera cradles have also been
set up at Taylors Mistake to track
how its coastline is changing.
Said city council head of
planning and strategic transport
David Griffiths: “We have set up
camera cradles at Taylors Mistake
and on the New Brighton Pier
in the hope that visitors to those
locations will take part in the
project by taking a photo and
sharing it on the CoastSnap app,
via Twitter or Instagram, or by
emailing coastsnapchch@ccc.

Yacht club celebrates 100 years
PLEASANT POINT Yacht
Club celebrates its centennial
this weekend.
The club, now based in South
New Brighton Park, began in
1921 on the shores of the estuary
just behind where the South
New Brighton School is today.
The area was then known as
Pleasant Point Domain.
In 1929 the club moved across
to the western shore to an area
of mud flats at the mouth of the
Avon River that would become
known as Rat Island.
Over the years, the club built
up and improved the land
together with the club facilities
and held summer sailing and
racing programmes, teaching
hundreds of children and
adults how to sail. That was
until the first of the Canterbury
earthquakes on September 4,
2010 damaged the buildings
and land beyond repair.
In the 10 years since, it
found a new site and has built
a new yacht club (opened in
September 2019) in South New
Brighton Park – just a stone’s
throw from where it all began
in 1921.
The centennial celebrations
will provide a great opportunity
to relive the highs and lows of
the club’s 100 years, especially
the last 10 years of the rebuild.
The celebrations kick off with
a noggin ‘n natter on Friday
night, on Saturday, the Sullivan
Cup, which is the club’s main
open event, will be sailed, coupled
with another major trophy,
the Arch Lamb trophy for the
Sunburst class.
The races will feature multihulls,
trailer yachts and senior
and junior racing dingy classes
and are open to other yacht club
members.
Saturday’s sailing will be followed
by a celebration dinner.
On Sunday, the club will
run its Classic Yacht Race,
first sailed at the club’s 75th
celebrations. This will be
coupled with a display of classic
boats of all types owned by
members of the Classic Boat
Group of Canterbury. There will
be plenty for the public to see
on Saturday and Sunday.
For more information, phone
Ian Douglas on 027 4719 208.

“Using a specialised technique
known as photogrammetry,
CoastSnap turns your photos into
valuable coastal data that is used
by coastal scientists to understand
and forecast how coastlines might
change in the coming decades.
“The beach and dunes at New
Brighton and Taylors Mistake are
dynamic, natural systems that are
constantly changing. CoastSnap
will help us to better understand
how the beaches respond to changes
in wave conditions, weather and
extreme storm events.
“Every photo that is taken will add
to a community database that will
be used by scientists and planners to
map shoreline changes. That information
will help us to improve how
we manage treasured coastal environments,
so please get snapping.
“There’s a sign at each camera
cradle site explaining what you
need to do so it is an easy project
for people to get involved in.’’

Cancer Society shuttle service gets boost
THE CANCER Society’s
Canterbury West Coast division
shuttle service received a boost
recently with a combined
donation of almost $13,000 from
23 South Island-based Lions
clubs.
THe free shuttle service
transports patients staying
in the Cancer Society’s
accommodation, Daffodil
House in Merivale and Daffodil
Lodge in Riccarton, to and from
radiation and chemotherapy
appointments at Christchurch
Hospital.
Janice Porter-Hoare,
fundraising and events manager
for the Cancer Society’s CWC
division, said that the Lions
Clubs’ significant donation was
a huge help towards funding the
$65,000 required to operate the
shuttle each year.
“The shuttle currently operates
from 7.30am until 9pm Monday
to Friday, which translates to
approximately 16,000 individual
patient trips. Given that the
patients we are providing our
service for, come from all over
the South Island it is fabulous
to see local Lions Clubs from a
variety of regions supporting
this Christchurch-based service,”
Porter-Hoare said.
Porter-Hoare acknowledged
that this was the fourth
consecutive year that the Lions
Clubs had donated to the shuttle
service.
“The late John Cramond from
Motueka organised the first
donation in 2017 after having
used the shuttle service himself
while having cancer treatment
in Christchurch,” Porter-Hoare
said.
“Sadly John passed away last
year, but his legacy lives on in
this donation, which is extremely
important to us given that we
anticipate the demand for the
shuttle service to grow even
further during 2021.”
Lions Club representative
Christine Stewart, 1st Vice
District Governor for District
202J, visited Daffodil House to
see the shuttle service in action
and accepted a certificate of
thanks from the Cancer Society
on behalf of the contributing
Lions Clubs.
In addition to providing
accommodation and transport
services, the Cancer Society
provides education and support
services for cancer patients and
their families, as well as coordinating
and funding cancer
research.

Hundreds of Cantabrians took advantage of a sizzling hot
day at New Brighton beach last Saturday to learn how to
fly a kite. Kites of all shapes and sizes took to the air during
the annual city council event. Other activities included a
sandcastle building competition, beach sports with Sport
Canterbury and free samples of Weis icecream.

All are invited to the 11th annual I
Love Brighton Waitangi day Monday.
Thousands of people are expected
to descend on Thomson Park on the
Monday of Waitangi Weekend for the ‘I
Brighton’ event. This will be the 11th
annual event, which started in 2011 as
a way of raising community spirits after
the earthquakes but has grown each year
and become a focal point for locals to
celebrate their community and for local
groups to showcase themselves.
The event is packed full of activities for
all ages including bouncy castles, water
walkers, face painting, food stalls, pony
rides, sports activities, circus skills, funky
bikes, a pre-school zone, market stalls and
a Live Music stage.
The event is also a recognition of the
significance of Waitangi Day and begins
this year with the Rawhiti School Kapa
Haka group. Other performers this year
include Music with Michal, the African
Drummers, Almost Johnny, Lorne Joblin
IN THE 1880s, John Bligh
created a Wonderland out
of 36 acres of sandhills.
Bligh’s Gardens were established
at an area on the
Avon River below Withell’s
Island and on Evans Ave.
They were established as
pleasure grounds by Bligh,
who died in 1996. John was
a cook, restaurant owner
and temperance hotel
keeper.
His hotel was near the
Salvation Army citadel
site in town. He also
owned a large property at
Blighs Rd.
When he decided to
create the gardens at New
Brighton, he brought
plants and soil down the
Avon in small craft. Conifers
were planted, garden
walks laid out, a playing
field formed, and a house
was built.
Sailing clubs, families
and business groups picnicked
at Bligh’s Gardens,
while conservationists
enthused about how Bligh
had made the desert “blossom
as the rose.”
It is still held in history
books as an amazing feat.
Behind the large house was
a vinery laden with grapes,
a fernery and greenhouses.
In 1885 picnic parties
were encouraged to camp
at Bligh’s Gardens where
“Mr Bligh’s family will
hospitably provide hot
water.”
Dinners and teas were
provided. The visitors
would come by boat up the
Avon to the landing place,
or people could travel by
the horse-drawn tram,
there and back for one shilling.
In 1890, Queen Victoria’s
birthday was celebrated by
400 people with archery
and gun firing.
After an exhibition in
1906, some of the amusements
were transferred to
Blighs Gardens including
a helter-skelter. The name
was changed to Wonderland.
Sadly the house was
destroyed by fire in 1909,
and after a succession of
owners after Bligh’s death,
the Wonderland ceased to
exist.
The land behind the old
croquet club is still called
Bligh’s Gardens, and at the
museum, there is a whole
folder on this place.

event runs from 11:00am until 3:00pm,
and parking is either on the streets, or on

businesses have donated prizes that can
be won on the day and via the social
media pages and He Puna Taimoana, New

to be given to the many volunteers who
run the day.
“For 10 years people have been coming
to the I Brighton event, enjoying the
activities and having a lot of fun on the
day! However, our vision is that the day
doesn’t end there, but locals connect
with local groups and get involved all
year around. Over 30 community groups
are involved on the day including youth

groups, playgroups, cultural groups,

wellbeing, and if more people are

The event is organised by six local

Perfect job for an interest in nature
Dean Pendrigh is the
collections curator for
the water garden, azalea
garden and the pinetum in
the Botanic Gardens and
has been working there for
the past 35 years. He talks
to Ella Somers
SKILLED: Dean Pendrigh tends to the plants in the Botanic Gardens. He has always had
an interest in nature.
A PASSION for nature led Dean
Pendrigh to pursue a botanical
career immediately after high
school and he started his
four-year apprenticeship at the
Botanic Gardens in 1986.
His apprenticeship included a
brief scholarship to Melbourne,
on his return he continued working
at the gardens.
Pendrigh said he has “always
had an interest in nature” but it
wasn’t until high school when his
uncle introduced him to orchids
that “really got me interested in
plants and native plants as well.”
He enjoys botanical work
because every season is different
and “something will be far better
one year and not the other,” he
said.
“I like the biogeography and
learning about where plants
come from and how plants react
to other plants and in different
countries.”
As well as maintaining the
collections and keeping careful
plant records, a large part of Pendrigh’s
job includes tasks such as
weeding, pruning, and cutting
hedges.
Watering takes up a lot of time
as well because “a lot of my areas
don’t have any actual automated
irrigation so we do it by hand,”
he said.
Due to the names of plants
changing frequently, updating
and labelling records is a
continual project and can be
frustrating.
“You get to know the name of
a plant and then a botanist will
change it,” Pendrigh said.
“Sometimes you’ll change a
label and then they’ll change it
back to the original name.”
Pendrigh said that while he
gets a lot of good comments
from people who come through
the garden, “a lot of people
don’t realise how much work is
involved,” he said.
In comparison to other trades
as well, it’s not recognised as
much as it should be.
“There is a lot of knowledge
that you need to know, and it
takes a long time to build up that
knowledge, especially that plant
knowledge,” he said.
“The names of plants you have
to learn as well, it’s like learning
another language.”
Pendrigh’s passion for
“everything botanical” has
inspired him to travel to
places across the world where
interesting flora lives, including
Africa.
“They’ve got a very diverse
flora,” he said.
“It increased my interest in
plants even more seeing them in
their natural habitat.”
He doesn’t have a favourite
plant but if he had to name his
favourite plant group, it would be
plants from the southern hemisphere,
New Zealand, Australia,
and South Africa in particular.
“There’s some interesting links
between the floras of those countries,”
Pendrigh said.
“And because I’ve seen them in
the wild, you appreciate them a
lot more.”
One of the most interesting
visitors that the Botanic Gardens
has had in Pendrigh’s time was
a visit from the Dalai Lama in
1992.
“He planted a himalayan pine
tree in my area,” Pendrigh said.
Unfortunately, the tree was
stolen a week after it was planted
and neither the thief nor the
Dalai Lama’s tree were ever
found.
The tree that now grows where
the Dalai Lama’s one used to be
“is one that I actually planted,”
Pendrigh said.

CALLS HAVE been made to
stop rates increases in response
to the Covid-19 crisis.
City councillors James Gough,
Sam MacDonald, Catherine
Chu, Phil Mauger, Aaron Keown
and James Daniels have sent a
letter to Mayor Lianne Dalziel
asking her to lead a conversation
as to how a zero per cent rates
increase could be achieved this
year.
The city council is proposing
an average rates increase of 4.65
per cent across all ratepayers in
this year’s Draft Annual Plan
which is currently under public
consultation until April 5 and
will be finalised before July 1.
The 2018-2028 Long Term
Plan also predicts a 50 per cent
rates increase over 10 years.
Said Cr MacDonald: “In
the current environment it’s
