White, Composer-in-ResidenceTyler Goodrich White has been Director ofOrchestras at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 1994 and a member of thecomposition faculty at UNL since 1996; beforecoming to Nebraska, White led orchestrasat Cornell University and Trinity University(Texas). In 2004, he was a guest lecturer inBeijing, China, and in September 2007 he wasnamed Best Musical Director at the WaterfordInternational Festival of Light Opera inWaterford, Ireland. Recent seasons have seenadditional guest conducting engagements inMexico, Brazil, and China. He has also beenResident Conductor of Lincoln’s SymphonyOrchestra (2000-2019) and is currently theorchestra’s Composer-in-Residence.White was born in Atlanta, Georgia and wasraised in Manhattan, Kansas. After graduatingPhi Beta Kappa from the University of NorthCarolina-Chapel Hill, he earned his master’sand doctoral degrees in composition fromCornell University, studying with PulitzerPrize-winners Steven Stucky and KarelHusa. He has also studied at the Universityof Copenhagen (Denmark) and the AmericanConservatory at Fontainebleau (France).National and international recognition for hiscompositions has come through awards fromASCAP, BMI, The American Conservatory atFontainebleau (Prix Maurice Ravel), ViennaModern Masters, the Omaha SymphonyGuild, Tulane University, Indiana StateUniversity, and the Southeastern ComposersLeague, and through commissions from theAtlanta Symphony Orchestra, the ClevelandChamber Symphony, Lincoln’s SymphonyIn 1997, White’s cello concerto Threnos(William Schuman in memoriam) became thefirst work by a Nebraskan to win the OmahaSymphony’s International New MusicCompetition, and in 1999 his opera O Pioneers,the first-ever operatic treatment of a WillaCather novel, was premiered at UNL andtelevised on Nebraska Public Television. In2001, Dr. White was named Composer of theYear by the Nebraska Music teachersAssociation. In 2003, White’s Elegy “for theorphans of terror” was awarded theMasterworks Prize and was recorded by theSofia Philharmonic on the inaugural volume ofERM Media’s “Masterworks of the New Era” CDseries, and in 2006 his Mystic Trumpeter(Symphony No. 2) was awarded HonorableMention in the ASCAP Foundation/RudolfNissim Prize competition.
