Coldest Night of 

the Year Walkathon 

for Castlegar: 

Castlegar Community Services has 

been hosting an event for the past three 

years in solidarity with hundreds of cities 

across Canada, all with the aim of 

raising money for local charities that 

help people in need. The walkathon is 

Canada’s national walkathon for homelessness. 

Funds raised in Castlegar help 

support the Homelessness Partnering 

Strategy which provides services to people 

in need of housing, and to the Youth 

Action Network, which providese preventative, 

social and community based 

leadership supports and opportunities to 

youth in our community who both use 

the program and have, year after year, 

volunteered to help plan and execute this 

event. Hundreds of people in our community 

have shown their support for 

this event, for the people it helps and for 

the programs at Castlegar Community 

The event in Castlegar raises funds to support, the Homelessness Partnering 

Strategy and Youth Action Network Programs, of the Castlegar 

and District Community Services non-profit agency. The event brings 

together hundreds of people in the community annually, including 

various groups of youth and students who have helped lead and execute 

this event year after year. 

Anyone can help in many ways: 

1. Walk 2 or 5 km, raise pledges for yourself or team comprised 

of your work place or family bubble 

2. Donate online or contact the organizers to donate in kind 

contributions such as food for the walkers 

3. Sponsor our event 

Nelson CARES Society hosts a Virtual Coldest Night of the Year event 

to support their ‘Ready for Home’ program that operates within Ward 

Street Place and supports the residents there to access government, healthcare, 

prescriptions and groceries anything they might need to stay housed.

Services, by pledging to walk, donate, 

sponsor the event as a business, offering 

in-kind donations or volunteering to

This year we are reaching out to the 

community again for support but it 

will be different. Due to the Covid 19 

pandemic the event will be virtual. This 

means that we are doing our part to keep 

our community safe. Funds can be raised 

entirely online and the event will not 

take place in-person as it has in the past. 

But we can still walk and we can still 

raise funds to help those members of our 

community that need support the most, 

especially in times like this. 

What does a virtual event look like? 

• In this case, Castlegar’s Coldest 

Night of the Year can still take place, 

walkers can sign up online @ cnoy.org, 

and raise funds virtually. 

• We will encourage walkers to walk 

on the day of the event (February 20) 

in small teams of 6 or less anywhere in

• This year, if walkers are unable to do 

their walks on event day, have mobility 

issues or are not comfortable walking in 

a group during Covid, they may choose 

to walk any day in the month of February 

or raise funds online without walking. 

• Funds can be collected until the end 

of March and businesses can support 

by donating larger sums as sponsors in 

exchange for public recognition of their 

sponsorship on the Coldest Night of the 

Year website (cnoy.org) which can be 

accessed both nationally and locally, as 

well as in our local media releases post 

event.

From February 19 to 21, 2021, Seedy event 

organizers from across the province will 

join us in delivering a pandemic-friendly 

opportunity to connect with BC community 

organizations, seed businesses, non-profit 

organizations, and learn about seed saving. 

There will be opportunities to swap seeds 

within and between communities and network 

with seed enthusiasts from all corners 

of the province. This event will not replace 

individual community events. You can still 

expect support and advertising for independent 

events on the BC Seedy Saturday Event 

Calendar and across our communication 

channels. 

The full schedule of the weekend is still 

being planned. While we finalize the details,

report 

Kootenay Lake: 

We are now in midwinter fishing conditions. 

The water is cold, and the fish are 

lethargic. But, they still have to eat!! 

In January, on most of our trips, we noticed 

the rainbow fishing drop off. However, we are 

still hooking a few each day. Although, the 

bull trout fishing has been pretty consistent, 

which has made it entertaining. 

Rainbows are still averaging 2 – 4 lbs, but 

the bull trout have been a bit heavier. Bulls 

between 3 – 15 lbs have come in lately. Just 

have to put in the time. 

One memorable trip from January had a 

couple of young bucks on board who were 

keen to fish. They managed to hook a couple 

rainbows each and about 8 bull trout. The fun 

part was watching the participation of both of 

them during each battle. The boys took turns 

reeling in fish and also took turns netting 

each other’s fish. Teamwork made this day 

successful. The biggest fish of the day was a 

bull trout just under 9 lbs, with a bunch of 

3 – 5 pounders rounding out the day. 

It’s always a blast having the young guns on 

the boat. 

While January and February might not 

provide the quantity of fish 

we are always hoping for, 

it usually provides us with 

some quality fish. So, it’s 

always worth a trip. 

Arrow Lakes: 

As per our previous 

reports, the Arrows are still 

a bit hit and miss. Upper 

Arrow is still producing

Slocan Valley

both rainbows and bull trout up to 

15 lbs. Lower Arrow has been pretty 

quiet. Although, we did hear a few 

decent reports from one or two different 

boats. If you put in your time 

and practise some patience, the end 

result can be rewarding. 

Columbia River: 

Still getting a few fish on the river. The 

water is high right now, and the fishing is up 

and down as well. We’ve had a few good days 

out there lately. Rainbows up to 6 lbs have 

been coming in. But, it’s different every day. 

Looking forward to getting back on the 

river if the weather cooperates during February. 

In the past we’ve had some of our best 

days on the river in February and March. 

What are they biting on? 

When they are biting, the Kootenay rainbows 

have been hitting on the #10, 15, and 22 

from lux flies, as well as our favourite Brass/ 

Firestripe, or Brass/Firewing Crocs. 

The bull trout have been fairly consistent 

on the Gibbs/Delta STS flasher or Lemon 

Lime flasher, followed by the green pistachio 

or green oil slick hoochie. And on the river it’s 

been best with bottom bouncers and bait. Or 

my favourite technique lately has been float 

fishing with bait. It’s always exciting to see the 

bobber go down.

New child care centre 

to open in Castlegar 

A new child care facility to be built on the 

grounds of the Castlegar and District Community 

Complex (CDCC) will provide 30 new 

child care spaces for local families. The project 

is being delivered through a partnership with 

Kootenay Family Place (KFP) and the Regional 

District of Central Kootenay’s (RDCK) Castlegar 

and District Recreation Commission 

(CDRC). The new centre is expected to open in 

September 2021. 

The RDCK, CDRC and KFP, with funding 

support from Columbia Basin Trust, successfully 

applied to the Province’s Childcare BC 

New Spaces Fund to support the new, licensed 

spaces in Castlegar. 

“The child care centre will be an important 

facility that will serve the residents of Castlegar 

and surrounding areas for years to come,” said 

Bergen Price, Chair of the Castlegar and District 

Recreation Commission. “The partnership 

between the RDCK and the operator (KFP) is 

central to the success of this project. We want to 

thank Columbia Basin Trust for their support 

and thank the B.C. Ministry of Children and 

Family Development for recognizing the need 

in the region by way of financial support for 

the project. Thank you to the recreation commissioners 

for their efforts, coming together to 

make this a reality.” 

“Access to quality child care for parents in 

Castlegar is so important and needed. This will 

give local families the opportunity to participate 

fully in the economy,” said Katrine Conroy, 

MLA for Kootenay West. “These spaces are 

part of the more than 20,000 new licensed child 

care spaces we’ve funded around the province 

to give children a safe place to learn and grow 

for generations to come.” 

In addition to the 30 new spaces, the facility 

will offer 20 licensed pre-school and afterschool 

spaces, providing part time care in the 

mornings and after school. The CDCC will 

have access to the facility for programming and 

school break camps when not in use for child 

care. A child care project committee has been 

formed with representatives from the RDCK 

and KFP in order to ensure a cohesive and 

mutually beneficial facility.

and Family Development, Kootenay Family 

Place continues to be able to enhance family 

supports for our ever changing and diverse

board park adjacent to the complex pool, facing 

south. Along with the building, a new playground 

area will be developed, which will be 

open to the public after child care hours and on 

weekends.

do this is by registering and fundraising 

for the IG Wealth Management Walk 

for Alzheimer’s. 

Participants can raise funds to 

support Alzheimer Society of BC programs 

and service and walk their own 

way all throughout May to honour 

people in their lives who have been 

affected by dementia. Then we will join 

together virtually on Sunday, May 30, to 

celebrate the difference we’ve made. To

Codie Morigeau was raised 

in the Ktunaxa 

Nation 

community 

of ?aq’am 

and lives in 

Cranbrook. 

She has 

worked with 

the Ktunaxa Nation since 

2001 and is currently the 

director of education and 

employment on a temporary 

assignment as the director of 

traditional knowledge, language, 

and culture. Codie 

is also the president of the 

Ktunaxa Kinbasket Child 

and Family Services Board 

and has served on the ?aq’am 

Chief and Council and the 

Ktunaxa Nation Executive 

Council. 

Aimee Watson has called 

Kaslo home since 2004. She 

led Kaslo’s “Lawns to Gardens” 

initiative, developed 

a food forum for North 

Kootenay Lake Community 

Services Society, and helped 

establish the Kaslo Food 

Security project, eventually 

opening the doors in 2009 

to the first accredited Food 

Hub in Canada. In 2014 

Aimee was elected the Electoral 

Area Director for Area 

D in the Regional District of 

Central Kootenay and is currently 

the chair of its board 

of directors. 

The Trust is governed 

by a 12-member board of 

directors. The five regional 

districts in the Basin and 

the Ktunaxa Nation Council 

each nominate a director, 

and the Province of BC 

appoints the remaining six 

directors. All directors must 

reside in the Basin.

With heavy hearts we share the 

sad news of the peaceful passing 

of Doe; beloved husband of 

62 years, father, grandfather and 

great-grandfather. He passed 

away at home with his wife Fran 

by his side. For the past several 

years Doe had a battle with 

cancer. He stayed strong and 

always kept his sense of humour. 

He was 

predeceased by his parents 

Emil and Agnes (Belisle), brothers 

Maurice and Felix, motherin-law 

Antoinette Roy, sisters-inlaw 

Mary and Brenda, a 

grandson David and a 

great-grandson Maximillion. 

Doria and Fran had six children. 

June Charison (Curtis), Daniel 

Gauthier (Deb), Michel Gauthier, 

Monique Ruchkall (Richard), 

Elise Hawryluk (Darcy) and Paul 

Gauthier (Trena). Doe had eleven 

grandchildren: Cameron (Whytnie), 

Jodie (Nicole), Shane (Precious Joy), Celia 

(Jan), Hope, Corey, Kyle, Megan (Colin), 

Amanda (Terry) and Janae. Doe had 

fourteen great-grandchildren: Chloe, 

Ryan, Brady, Hadley, Mayla, Levi, Jaxon, 

Peyton, Jazzlyn, Jagger, Nate, Nixon and 

Zayden. Included in his family circle are 

ex daughters-in-law Connie and Tara. 

Doe dearly loved and was so proud of 

all of his family. 

Doe was born to Emil and Agnes 

and was the third born of four boys: 

Maurice, Ralph and Felix. He had a few 

years of primary school but quit to take 

care of Maurice his older, blind brother 

while his parents worked. At a young 

age he sought out employment. Doe 

worked at various jobs; he worked at 

the bakery Robinson Shortbread, as 

a delivery driver, a gravel truck driver, 

worked at Independent Fish, Simpson 

Sears as a roofer, a sanitary engineer, 

he worked for the city of St. Boniface 

in the water department checking 

water levels during flood season and 

worked at Quality Construction. He 

was a jack of all trades. He moved 

with his family to Gunton, Manitoba 

in 1970 and soon after took a job with 

Charisons Turkey Hatchery and later at 

Maksymyk Homes. Then he became a 

self employed general contractor. Doe 

learned his trade of carpentry from his 

father and a lot of it was self taught. He 

worked hard his entire life until the age 

DORIA (DOE) LEON MARCEL GAUTHIER 

October 13, 1938 - January 20, 2021 

of 80. One day he had difficulty putting 

a set of stairs together and he knew 

it was time to put down the hammer 

and hang up the tool belt. He loved 

working and enjoyed his many jobs and 

the interaction with his many, many 

customers – some of whom became 

very good friends. 

He married the love of his life, Fran 

Roy, in April of 1958. They resided in St. 

Boniface, St. Vital and Gunton, Manitoba 

and in 1987 they moved to Alberta 

and lived in Egremont, Acme and then 

on to Bashaw. In Bashaw Doe and Fran 

owned and operated a motel for five 

years. Then from Bashaw they moved 

to Glade, British Columbia where Doe 

absolutely thrived, living right next to 

the Kootenay river, and he loved the 

waterfalls in the bush right in his back 

yard so to speak. In the fall of 2019 

his ill health brought him back to his 

Manitoba beginnings where he lived in 

Lac Du Bonnet until the present time. 

Doe was proud of his Metis heritage 

and those roots really shone through 

with his love of nature and the wilderness. 

He hunted, fished, trapped, and 

loved berry picking. His other loves 

were his family and friends, dogs, his 

favourite bird the goose and favourite 

animal the moose, motorcycling (in his 

younger years), old time country and 

fiddling music (his favourite fiddler being 

Cliff Maytwayashing) dancing and 

jigging, he loved to party, gardening (for 

the cucumbers and beans), hockey (his

A graduate of Selkirk College, 22-year-old 

Ben Marken studied in the Millwright/ 

Machinist Program and the Digital Arts & 

New Media Program. 

When NASA put out an online challenge 

to help find solutions for unloading 

supplies on the Moon, Selkirk 

College alumnus Ben Marken answered 

the worldwide call with a design that 

turned heads and placed him an impressive 

fifth overall in the competition. 

The National Aeronautics & Space 

Administration (NASA) is currently 

pushing forward with its Artemis program 

that will land the first woman and 

next man on the Moon by 2024. As part 

of its overall scheme to send astronauts 

to Mars, the US-based space agency 

appealed to the online community to 

come up with answer for unloading 

supplies on the surface so sustainable

was nothing he enjoyed more 

than cutting wood for his wood 

stove and being on his riding lawn 

mower cutting grass. He was such 

a friendly guy who took up a conversation

new friend. He especially liked his 

coffee clutches where he could 

shoot the breeze with the guys. He 

played the lotto tickets and always 

had one either in his pocket or in 

his truck. Doe had quite a refined 

palate; he ate with his eyes and 

his comment without even tasting 

was always Nope, don’t like that. 

Doe had a stubborn streak and 

oh man he had his opinions. If 

someone or something ruffled his 

feathers it was a constant source 

of angst for him and all those who 

heard about it over and over again. He 

certainly was one of a kind. Doe said he 

wanted to return in his next life as a 

goose. 

“Let the wide open skies be your 

domain and you be the lead bird in your 

echelon. We’ll give a quick wave and 

call out your name, so long for now. We 

all love you Doe.” 

We miss you deeply and will forever 

treasure your love and memory in our 

hearts. 

METIS FUNERAL PRAYER 

“Do not look at my grave and weep; 

I am not there. I am a thousand winds 

that blow. I am the diamond glints on 

the snow. I am the sunlight on ripened 

grain. I am the gentle spring rain. I am 

not there, I did not die. When you 

awaken in the morning hush, I am the 

swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in 

circled flight. I am the soft stars that 

shine over your head at night. Do not 

stand at my grave and cry. I am not 

there, I did not die.” 

May we all find the power in this prayer 

and look to the future for reunion and a 

great hunt.

“I noticed the contest four days before 

the deadline and thought I’d give it my best 

shot,” says the 22-year-old Marken. “The 

chance that my concept might play a role 

in the final vehicle design sounded wild.” 

The Advanced Lightweight Lunar Gantry 

for Operations (ALLGO) Challenge 

sought creative solutions using computer-aided 

design models for a mobile support 

structure based on a framework of 

inflatable components. With a detailed 

list of specifications provided by judges 

and no time to spare, Marken set to work 

on his design that resulted in the ALLGO 

Tubecrane. 

“It’s like taking three of those inflatable 

tube men you see outside of car dealerships 

and gluing the bottom of each one 

to a golf cart,” Marken says when asked 

to put his submission into simple terms. 

“Strap a crane on top, send it 380,000 

kilometres into space and hope everything 

works. The short answer is that 

it’s just an expandable gantry crane for 

unloading cargo.” 

Out of 132 total accepted entries that 

appealed to a community engineers, 

designers, manufacturers and students, 

Marken’s concept came in fifth overall. He 

was the only Canadian entry to reach the 

final contest. 

“The three-tube 

bladder was a 

unique feature,” 

Marken says. “It 

held strong in all 

the FEA software 

I used, nice and 

rigid. The judges 

gave it a test themselves 

and liked 

the concept.” 

A graduate of Nelson’s LV Rogers Secondary 

in 2016, Marken entered Selkirk 

College’s Digital Arts & New Media Program 

straight out of high school. With a 

passion for learning and a superb talent 

for problem solving, he further built on 

his formal education in the college’s Millwright/Machinist 

Program on the Silver 

King Campus. 

In coming up with his design for the 

ALLGO Challenge, Marken did research 

on both NASA’s Apollo 15 Mission and 

the former Soviet Union’s Lunokhod Program, 

two early-1970s Moon projects that 

focused on lunar roving vehicles. He also 

tapped his post-secondary education at 

Selkirk College to help him with the entry. 

“The judges made some pretty unique 

requests for the concept they were looking 

for and I didn’t have much formal training 

in that area, the closest I had to help 

me is machinist and engineering graphic 

communications classes,” says Marken. 

“The swing-drive idea was inspired by a 

modern excavator and the three-boom 

gantry off of a delta style printer.” 

With an approach to education and 

future career that places focus on building 

a diversity of skills while pushing towards 

what interests him, Marken is modest 

about his latest accomplishment. His 

fifth-place finish comes with praise from 

the space agency, but it’s unclear whether 

his ambitions include a future helping 

NASA more formally solve problems of 

space exploration. 

“Only if they have free coffee in the 

break room,” he smiles.

Selkirk College 

Mary Flegel 

June 14, 1930 – January 23, 2021 

On January 23, 2021 Mary Flegel passed 

away peacefully at Talarico Place in 

Castlegar, B.C. Her daughter Pearl was 

with her when she passed. Mary was 

born in Shoreacres on June 14, 1930 

to John and Mary Malakoff, she was 

the youngest of five children. 

Mary grew up in Hills. She left 

school after grade six, to help out 

on the farm. She started at the age 

21 working in Sandon as a cook, this 

was where she met Frank, her future 

husband. 

In 1952, Frank and Mary were married 

and moved to Longbeach, and had five 

children, Clarence, Ken, Blanche, Pearl and 

Ron. She worked for 35 years as a care aid at Willowhaven and Mount 

St. Francis. Frank passed away in 2013 and Clarence in 2018. 

There will be a celebration of life at her house in Longbeach on her 

birthday in June of 2022 when it safe to do so.
