HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY

FOOTBALL AT HOME

The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit

knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem

like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform

your garden into a proper footy pitch.

GREG DOCHERTY

A WEEK AGO GREG DOCHERTY WAS SCORING AN

IMPRESSIVE SOLO GOAL AGAINST LINCOLN CITY,

AND THERE IS NOTHING THAT THE SCOTTISH

MIDFIELDER WOULD LOVE MORE THAN TO

REPEAT THE FEAT AGAIN THIS EVENING.

Although Docherty’s effort on the

hour wasn’t enough to take the Tigers’

through to the semi-finals of the Papa

John’s Trophy, it did highlight the really

good recent form of the former Glasgow

Rangers man. As well as his goal against

the Imps, the 24-year-old also bagged

the winner against Swindon Town in Hull

City’s most recent home league fixture

and he feels he is now approaching

something like his best having fully

settled into life in East Yorkshire following

his arrival last summer.

and it’s something that I’m always looking to

improve on.

“Swindon was maybe my best performance

so far here, especially with getting the

winner and creating a few chances. There’s

one aim for the whole club this year and

that’s promotion. I’m playing a lot of

minutes at the moment and so I need to

keep contributing because there is strong

competition for places and I want to keep

hold of that jersey.

“I class myself as a goal-scoring midfielder

so I want to keep on improving,” said

Docherty. “I’ve started the year well,

although I feel as though I could have

scored a few more than I have. The second

half of the season is crunch time and I want

to be contributing to this team. If I can

get a few more then great, but the main

thing is that we keep winning as a team

to achieve our end goal in May. It’s been a

decent start to the year for me goal-wise

“With the goal against Lincoln last week,

I just saw a gap and went for it. With my

defensive head on, I thought if someone

was running at me on a night like that it

would be hard to stop. I just kept seeing

space opening up and running at that is

something I know I need to do more of and

I’m working at it. As a midfielder myself, I

know it’s tough when a player is running at

you. I feel that is a strength of mine and I

have the backing of the staff to do it more.

I’m enjoying the role that I have in this

team at the moment. I feel that I’m

bedded in now and that I’m starting to

perform more towards the ability that I

know I can show.”

The Tigers and the Imps go head-tohead

again this evening in what is an

eagerly anticipated clash between

two of Sky Bet League One’s leading

pack. Both clubs have designs on

automatic promotion come the end

of the season and Docherty knows

that his side has the quality to

achieve their goal, and is keen to

keep contributing himself.

added Docherty. “We know what we’ve got

in our dressing room. We were without some

key players against Lincoln last week but we

still performed well. We’ve got players that

are desperate to get into the squad, and you

have to perform to stay in it and keep a shirt.

We’ve recruited well in January and the

new additions have helped us and added

that spark, as has Keano signing a new deal.

We’ve got another busy schedule this month

and we know what we need to do. If we play

to our maximum then there is no reason

why we can’t achieve our goals.”

“We started the season well and then

we’ve recruited well in January to

bring in that freshness. It brings

that extra bit of life and that is

what new signings can do. You

have to be on your toes to stay in

the manager’s thoughts.”
