February is Here!

February is here and love is in the air!

As we enter in the month that is traditionally known for

expressions of love and admiration, I can not let this moment

pass without telling everyone, THANK YOU! Nicole and I are

so in awe of the support we continue to receive from our

members and community. We genuinely love Lake Placid!

Our town could very well be just another dot on the map

without YOU, you are the community that opens their arms

and hearts to a new leadership team and trusts us to represent

you and your businesses. You are the community that supports

each other during disasters and shows up in big ways to help

neighbors that are in need. The community that rallies around

businesses to give support in a multitude of ways. YOU are that

and so much more. We are proud to call Lake Placid home.

We look forward to getting out and visiting our members over

the next few months. Our door is always open, please stop by

and say “hi” anytime.

Happy Valentine’s month!

Jennifer

Find the Hidden Object Competition

Every month we will hide a symbol of a WiFi connection. Which symbolizes the connection between the

Chamber and it’s members. Look for the hidden symbol throughout the newsletter each month and when you

find it, send us an email at information@lpfla.com and tell us where it is (Page and general vicinity on the

page.) If correct, you will be entered into a drawing for a gift certificate to one of our member businesses. Prizes

will vary from month to month.

Entry emails must contain the edition of newsletter that the symbol was found in (Month) and the finders name

along with the best way to contact that person. Drawings will be held on the last Monday of every month.

Good Luck!

January’s Winner

The winner from the January Newsletter’s

contest was Belinda Hodge. She won an

insulated tumbler from AdventHealth.

Be sure to look for the symbol and email or

Cupid has its roots in Greek mythology.

He's the charming cherub that appears on Valentine's Day cards,

often depicted with a bow and arrow — but how did Cupid become a

common symbol of Valentine's Day? According to Time, the figure

can actually be traced all the way back to 700 B.C., to the Greek god

of love named Eros, who was actually a handsome, immortal man

with the intimidating power to make people fall in love. It wasn't

until the 4th century BC that the Romans adopted Eros into the

image of a cute little boy with a bow and arrow, naming him "Cupid."

By the turn of the 19th century, Cupid had become linked to Valentine's Day due to his love

matching powers. Get more fun facts from : https://www.goodhousekeeping.com

Meet the Board

Meet the Greater Lake Placid Chamber of

Commerce Board Secretary, Kim Miller. In

1984 she moved to Lake Placid from

California to help her ailing grandmother.

She has served on the board since 2006

and has been the secretary for 11 of those

years.

Kim is always quick to jump in and help

with anything that may need to be done,

and she is our go to person for anything

involving decorating, where she certainly

excels.

In her spare time, Kim enjoys reading and

cooking, but most especially spending time

with her 3-year-old grandson, Weston.

Kim is a joy to work with, and we look

forward to many more years of working

closely with her at the Chamber.

Let’s shine our spotlight on Main Street America. Owned and operated by

Mr. & Mrs. Shawn Larkin, this restaurant has been a cornerstone of Lake Placid

for 35 Years! They employ 15 people and are open from 7-2 Wednesday thru

Friday and serve breakfast on the weekends.

Located at 15 South Main Avenue, their signature dish is the Chicken Salad

Croissant, but a lot of people who come through the Chamber comment on the

HUGE Banana Split’s that they have enjoyed.

In 1986, fresh out of college, Mr.

Larkin says “I wanted to reside in

Lake Placid. The restaurant was a

spur of the moment idea, but it turned

out to be a good choice!”

Main Street America Pre-Fire, 2009.

When asked what is something that

makes this business different from

other businesses in our area, he said

“We try everyday to be reasonably

priced, clean and efficient. Anybody

can cook at home, so we try to offer a good experience worth the effort of

coming through our doors.

Even though strong headwinds are

approaching small businesses in the near

future, it is up to the owner’s

entrepreneurial spirit to navigate rough

waters. We have survived for 35 years by

being determined and flexible owners.”

That strong entrepreneurial spirit helped

them make it through when a fire damaged

the restaurant in 2009, they persevered,

and we are so glad that they did.

Here is to another 35 years in Downtown

Lake Placid for Main Street America! Stop

in and give them a try. Tell them the

Chamber sent you!‡

MURAL TIDBITS

The mural titled Jennie Reninger- A Remarkable Woman is a beautiful mural

that depicts Ms. Reninger on a rearing horse with whip in hand, herding cattle.

It is located at 113 South Main Avenue, on the side of the Personal Rehab, Inc.

Building. This mural is fifty feet wide by ten feet high. It was painted by Mr.

Roger Cooke in January of 2004, and sponsored by Personal Rehab, Inc., Vivian

Zimmerman, Jean and Grady Parrish, and the Lake Placid Historical Society.

Ms. Reninger was indeed a remarkable woman. She and her family lost

everything during the depression, but she did not let that stop her from

becoming a successful woman. She wrote a popular newspaper column, hosted

a radio program, and founded the Easter Lily industry in lake Placid. And those

things are just a few of her many accomplishments. She lived to be 94 years old

on her 63-acre ranch known as Green Pastures.

To read a little bit more about Ms. Reninger, stop by the Chamber and pick up a

Mural Book for only $4.

If you are out looking at the Mural, look for a freighter, a typewriter and a

bucking bull as well as a vehicle.

Volunteer Showcase

This month’s spotlight is shining on

Mrs. Wanda Hatfield. Wanda is

originally from Illinois, but moved to

Miramar, FL in 1970 where she lived

until 1982 when she relocated to Lake

Placid.

Wanda started out as a Mural Volunteer

over 20 years ago. She is our “Go To”

person for mural questions. She has

never met a stranger and is in her

element when she is helping someone.

She is active in her church and spends

much of her spare time taking care of her

house and yard.

We are so happy to have Wanda

volunteer at the Chamber and look

forward to many more years of her being

on our Thursday Crew!
