TOMRA was founded in 1972 on
an innovation that began with
reverse vending machines, which
collect used beverage containers
for recycling and reuse. Since then
TOMRA has expanded its scope to
provide cutting-edge technology
for sorting solutions in the food,
recycling and mining industries.
TOMORROW
Altogether, TOMRA has over
95,000 installations in over 80
markets worldwide. All of the
different technologies seek to
contribute to sustainability and
as much increased productivity as
possible from the world’s limited
resources, tying in with our
global vision of
Leading the Resource
Revolution
Since the launch of TOMRA
Collection Solutions into
Australia in 2017, we have
sought to build a thriving,
passionate culture of
Ecopreneurs who believe
that the more successful our
business is, the more we’ll
be able to help protect our
planet’s precious resources
for future generations.
This book represents how our team of over 200 “loopers” feel about working at
TOMRA and why over 85% of them truly believe TOMRA is a great place to work.

TO ME
TOMRA...
The Tomra Culture for me is about one of being connected.
2020 was supposed to be one of new beginnings, new goals and the
start of a new journey for some, but it definitely proved to be difficult and
unsettling at times. We had to overcome boundaries and serious adversity
but the start of the new decade didn’t realise it was coming up against a
formidable force, the one of Tomra and the power of its’ people.
There was a spirit of stepping up to the plate and looking out for your
mate, not only professionally but personally as well. New friendships
were formed and departments learned how to work closer, including the
adjustment of working remotely. But despite the challenges, we came out
the other side with a remarkable strength and spirit which was always
evident from the beginning but now thriving thanks to the compassion of
the company and the dedication of its loyal loopers.
As we move forward and build on the determination we have shown
in recent times, I look forward to being even more connected to this
amazing group of people within Tomra. Despite our different backgrounds
and experiences, people are always willing to reach out and offer their
assistance because we all come together sharing the same goal.
After all, WE ARE TOMRA, not me, not you but US together being the
core of the organisation, which everything else bases itself around.
- Wade Giddings
From the moment I started working at TOMRA
I felt at home. Every single person in this
business is friendly and approachable. It’s pretty
special to work for a company with like-minded
people, all working towards a shared purpose. I
personally feel very humbled to work amongst
such passionate individuals for a company that’s
#1 intention is to promote an environmentallyfriendly
society.
- Anon
TOMRA’s culture is all about doing what needs to
be done to move the business forward. Nobody in
the business ever says “that’s not my job” - even
if the task isn’t in their job description. It’s also
what makes TOMRA so successful, there’s always
someone there, willing and able to help out.
- Anon
To me Tomra’s Culture is...
A group of people passionate about the work they do
A collective agreement that everyone is glad to work for a
company who cares about the environment, sustainability
and making a difference
A multinational, successful company that has the resources to
do what’s needed, well
Being supportive of its people, making sure we are not only
TOMRA Safe, but giving us the tools to succeed and support
where necessary
Never-ending tasks, improvements and hard work put in
across all departments but also opportunities to celebrate
those successes and enjoy social events with team mates
A great bunch of people who care about each other and who
are keen for the occasional dress up and laugh! (i.e.. Toy Story
parade, Halloween themed business updates, and surprise
themed team calls!)
- Alina Riggs
Working for Tomra
is my first proper job
and it’s been amazing.
I have made heaps of
new friends and I enjoy
saving the environment.
- James Mahony
Tomra is the best company I ever worked for in
every regard, with a great purpose and culture,
awesome work environment surrounded by good
people, and a compelling, great purpose to work
towards every day. Tomra Culture is nurturing,
inclusive, and fun. Tomra has a wonderful and
supportive leadership team. Very customer-focused
and good career opportunities for committed
high performers, and exciting problems to solve!
The challenges within TOMRA are not negative,
I’m stimulated by the work and the fast-paced
environment which can be challenging at times,
but in a positive way. - Eduward Halim
The fantastic thing about TOMRA’s culture is
that it’s based on a cause, which permeates
through every facet of the company.
Quite simply, Loopers care! We care about protecting
our environment, we care about our people, and we
act on our passions to support these values. There
is an immense amount of company pride shared by
all, which transforms our workplace into one which
is highly vibrant, where all Loopers are motivated to
succeed. Why do I enjoy coming to work each day? I
call it the TOMRA Three C’s: Cause, Camaraderie, and
Collective hard work without egos. All of these culture
qualities make TOMRA such a great place to work!

Good organisational culture can
unite employees and encourage
them to grow with the organisation.
Since I’ve worked at Tomra, I felt
Tomra always provided opportunity
for employees to voice out, no
matter what position they are, and
they care about the voices. Tomra
gives opportunities to employees to
develop and be promoted to the
next level in their career path.
- Joe Yu
The TOMRA work culture is the best I
have worked in. The culture harbours
a positive, driven and growth
mindset. I am proud to be part of,
and contribute to, this culture.
- Garth Graves
To work for a Company that
focuses on its team being ONE
TRIBE is truly unique.
Being a Looper is something
that has meaning to everyone
and creates inclusiveness to all
regardless of your role in the
Company.
- Anon
Tomra is a great place to work all things
being equal, but I think there are some
things that need to changed (e.g. public
holidays would be nice to have off to enjoy
family functions). I don’t believe we are
working smarter but harder and, at times
this is taking a toll on workers - some days
you work hard all day but it feels like you
don’t achieve anything - but this is just
my thoughts. As for culture, depot staff
are awesome but I don’t think this goes
beyond the depot itself. - Anon
CULTURE IS ONE OF THOSE PARADOXICAL THINGS THAT
SEEMS SIMULTANEOUSLY SIMPLE, YET COMPLEX...
And bloody difficult to get right! Someone else much cleverer than I has probably
already said this before, but one useful definition of culture improvises on a famous
line from Tom Hanks’ character in Forest Gump: ‘culture is as culture does’. In other
words, our culture is actually the way we are, the way we do things - and not what
we say about ourselves or say about the way we should do things. Adopting
this lens is a big anti-BS test for any organisation. Another important aspect of
culture is the qualities of the people, particularly leaders in the organisation, and
the examples they set. Yes, we can ask are we ‘responsible’, ‘passionate’ and
‘innovative’? But also, are we more likely to admit our own shortcomings than
we are to blame, are we willing to give credit to others rather than take it for
ourselves, are we willing to be kind rather than harsh, are we willing to work
collaboratively rather than sail solo, are we willing to be honest and not
dissemble, are we genuinely able to have respect, are we willing to accept
mistakes and misfires in order to create an environment for innovation
and for others to learn? We can choose to see culture as a state, i.e. how
our company culture currently is. Or we can see culture as a journey.
For me, the exciting thing about TOMRA Australia is that it is most
definitely on the journey. It is alive, growing and changing. We are
reflecting on ourselves, we are open to change and improvement.
We can both value what we have but also have a laugh at our own
expense. We might experience the frustrations of being a satellite
under the ultimate control of mothership, a tail that tries to
wag the dog. We might need to self-correct occasionally when
we realise we’ve drunk too much of our own cool-aid. There
may be moments when we revert to old ways or to counterproductive
behaviours just because we are human or we get
overwhelmed with the challenges we have to deal with. And
those challenges are many and range from dealing with sad
souls defecating at our RVM kiosks to countering some of
the world’s most powerful corporations actively spreading
misinformation about us because we threaten their vested
interests. It is certainly important that we have a shared
belief in the company’s vision to facilitate the circular
economy here in Australia and beyond - but if that was
all we had and our culture was dead or moribund,
would we all still wish to be here? We are on a journey
undertaken together. There are guideposts but no
‘right’ answers – there are those answers that we
jointly find along the way. Our culture is alive,
growing and changing – that is what makes it
great and worth being part of.
- Harris Madden
TOMRA values: Passion,
Innovation, Responsibility
I was looking long and hard to find employer
whose values would align with my own! Trust
me it wasn’t easy to find. I was very excited
when I got the opportunity to join the team.
It gave me the opportunity and motivation to
develop my skills, passions and knowledge to
grow and improve on so many levels…
But there is more!
Diversity: It is wonderful to work
alongside colleagues from so many
different cultural backgrounds
Opportunity and Support: Since the day I
started I felt supported and encouraged by
my peers and superiors. This support has
brought out the best in me. I think I may
not have been aware of how much could I
achieve and grow. All I needed was the
right environment.

TO ME
TOMRA...
- is a company that matches many of my strong values and beliefs: it’s important that I spend my time
doing something meaningful, working to have a positive impact on the environment, on the community.
- plays an active role in accelerating change and I enjoy being part of this.
- is a humble, caring, supportive, and a forward-thinking organisation.
- makes mistakes but it’s unlikely it will make them twice.
- is daring, willing to try new things, push boundaries, and not shy at empowering its employees.
- has a bright future, full of promising opportunities for growth.
- is collaborative, I also really like getting involved in various cross-departmental projects.
Without underestimating the challenges associated with working in a fast-paced environment,
within a relatively complex* structure, multiple stakeholders and partners, working for TOMRA has
been exciting and very rewarding. And not only because of the “WHY”. The “HOW” has been equally
important… I believe using the adjective “genuine” to qualify a for-profit international company is quite
uncommon but to me, TOMRA’s intentions feel very genuine.
Something that is part of the company’s DNA, its leaders, its culture.
My experience at TOMRA has been very positive and I hope it continues that way.
- Remi Duracher
* I find this complexity so intriguing and interesting because the
product we collect is so “basic”, That contradiction is fascinating :)
My favourite thing about TOMRA’s culture is the focus on
PROGRESS while providing a SUPPORTIVE environment.
THE HIGHLIGHT OF WORKING IN TOMRA FOR ME HAS BEEN THE PEOPLE
THAT I’VE HAD THE CHANCE TO MEET AND MAKE THE DEEPEST AND
MOST MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS WITH OVER THE PAST 3 YEARS.
From day 1 where we were a tiny lost bunch of enthusiastic and
passionate people who didn’t have answers to everything but the
willingness to concur all our goals because of the trust and camaraderie
we had to make TCA not just an outstanding company but to create an
example of what people with passion and determination can achieve.
We’ve come a long way from there and I cannot be happier seeing the
same people doing so well professionally and in personal life as well as
the growth of the company. I can confidently say that with experience
and collaboration and respect spread throughout all departments and
Team, everyone is clear on the vision that we are making a difference
in one of the biggest change any company has been able to achieve
towards creating a better world to live for our future generation to come.
No matter how great our product is and the greatest strategies that have
been implemented, I feel like the genuine passion, empathy and respect
that we have is our biggest competitive advantage and the biggest
difference between working in any other company.
TOMRA is an amazing company to work for. It’s complex,
challenging and high pressure, but it’s also caring, supportive and
collaborative, and we’re all passionate about the environment and
protecting our planet for future generations. I don’t think you’ll
thrive or survive long if you’re not driven by the same inner desire
to make a positive difference. Which is what we’re all driven by
– both individually and collectively. But it’s also a business that
genuinely cares about it’s people, both from a safety-at-work
perspective and from a growth and development perspective.
It’s people, planet, profit – in that order. And it’s working. I feel
empowered to do the very best job I can and to make mistakes,
knowing that if some things don’t work, we’ll learn from them and
move on. I no longer think of my co-workers as colleagues, I think
of them as friends. So I can’t imagine working anywhere else now.
Or wanting to.
- Anon
I’ve found too many people in my journey to even name them that genuinely
care about me and my future and a lifelong friendship with the best motives in
heart. Before working at TOMRA, I thought it would never have been possible
to have such meaningful connection with your work colleagues which I’m
extremely grateful for.
We have our challenges and pain points and a lot of room for improvement
in terms of developing our skills and creating an even better environment for
people to flourish and perform at a very high level crushing all goals but I’m
sure with communication, passion, empathy and awareness everything will fall
into place in the coming years.
What defines TOMRA to me is how the company genuinely cares about the
employees that are serious about making a change alongside the trust and help
received for upskilling and how the Leadership team is great at showing the
bigger picture on why loopers do what they do.
There isn’t a day in the last 3 odd years that I didn’t want to be part of the
company or felt like I don’t belong here and even if it’s a bad day, I’m gratified to
have people in TOMRA beside me to talk and guide me through the dark times.
I cannot wait to see where and how the next 5, 10, 15 years will look like for us.
- Subrat Panthee
TOMRA is a company that believes in making a positive difference
in the recycling industry. Its focus is governed by a set of values that
helps to lead container depositing schemes across the world. The
current TOMRA Culture is built on collaboration and empowerment
where teamwork and inclusion are key drivers of success. The
innovation, flexibility, passion and belief in each other sets TOMRA
apart from its competitors. TOMRA Team Members, also known
as Loopers (a tribal notion), are provided opportunities to excel
and create value-driven ideas in line with its mission, promoting
accountability, transparency and trust.
I like the fact that everyone is making a meaningful contribution
and permitted to create and explore new ideas without obstacles
being put in their way. Loopers from diverse backgrounds, different
educational experiences and varied interests can express their views
and are supported to make a positive difference. Loopers feel that
they belong to TOMRA and their contributions are valued.
- Scott McClymont
- Madeleine White
TOMRA is a place where all people in all parts of
the business are there to help out one another,
the company is a community of people working
together. To put it as a recipe the culture is
made up of the following ingredients; start
with support and caring, then mix in fun and
exciting, finish it off with a common goal of
accountability for the environment and a
drive to make the world a better place.
- Anon
Even through the tougher times there’s
always someone around that’s willing to
jump into the trenches with you, we’re lucky
to have such a high number of supportive
team mates who are all so willing to work
with you to get to the goal. It’s often the case
that it’s not even directly impacting their own
brand or department, they’re just doing it
because there’s a mutual understanding
that we’re in this together and they just
want to help.

TO ME
TOMRA...
SAFETY OF OUR CUSTOMERS AND EMPLOYEES BEING
OUR COMMITMENT GOES ALONGSIDE OUR PASSION
TO ENCOURAGE OUR WORLD TO RECYCLE AND LIVE A
SUSTAINABLE LIFE WHILST REDUCING WASTE.
Providing opportunities to making our planet a zero
waste possibility for future generations is the most
innovative ingenuity we can make happen.
Let us continue to grow and branch out to all parts of the
world wanting to help in the war on waste. Tomra’s ideology of
innovation, responsibility and planning has provided us a way
to come together and unite and demonstrate a way of life that
millions of people want to embrace. By giving us the tools to
communicate effectively, we can resolve issue’s on a daily basis
in minutes, whilst this time management allows us to prepare for
the future. Choices for our customers with modern technology
allowing for the refund to be direct deposited makes the
transaction of recycling that much easier.
It was obvious from the beginning. In my interview, I met two
lovely people whose warmth, sincerity, kindness and value of
company policies were at the forefront. And again, during my
orientation these two ladies committed to showing me everything
they could in a short amount of time and even so generous to buy
a stranger a cup of coffee. And again, with another beautiful soul
who took the room with such determination to help me prepare
for my upcoming duties and responsibilities, it was one of the
best one-on-one training sessions imaginable. She will be able
to command a room with a hundred people. Her heart speaks
volumes. And again, in the field, this man gave all his time and
effort to show me there is so many different ways to achieve our
goals with professionalism, friendliness and commitment. The
smiles continue in the office. The teamwork and dedication shown
by each individual. Pure teamwork at its finest by all.
It’s obvious what Tomra is doing. Carefully selecting
individuals who have heart and their brainwaves operating
in a manner that wish to make a difference, perhaps for
different reasons yet still to achieve the same goals.
As our managers, lead and guide us through our daily
work lives, I say great job for listening to the people and
responding so quickly with understanding that each
situation is unique. This is the culture we breathe, no
matter the situation we can overcome it together.
And I’m happy and proud to be part of it. - Jeremy Cohen
TOMRA is the workplace environment that

The people of TOMRA are professional

Working at TOMRA is rewarding and dynamic. I love that
no one is too proud to help out a fellow Looper. Whether
that be tidying up a machine when we’re visiting a site or
handing out flyers about the next charity appeal across
shopping centres. It really does feel like we’re one team.
- Caroline Nguyen
One of the first questions I ask in an interview, is
“What interested you in working at TOMRA?”
A majority of the time, their response mentions
recycling or doing good for the environment.
We are a company with such diverse employees,
with different backgrounds and personalities,
yet we all seem to have one common goal. We all
come together, to work towards the goal of doing
good for the environment, wanting to make a
difference and being a game changer.
- Charlotte Sawyer
Extremely lucky to be part of TOMRA, who’s
passionate, inspiring and supportive environment
where every employee feels welcome, no matter
their personal or professional background and it’s
important to provide an exciting and vibrant place
to work. We’re incredibly proud that as we’ve
grown, our culture has remained steadfast. TOMRA
believe in giving back to the community, actively
support the charity with frequent fundraisers,
also stepping up our efforts by developing
communities that encourage employees to reduce
and recycle, create many activities to improve
environmental sustainability and pursue our
mission Save the Planet.

TOMRA culture for me is diverse and
inclusive. TOMRA shapes an inclusive
environment to ensure everyone feels
comfortable and welcome no matter what
their background or experiences are.
What’s different about it compared to other
company culture is that TOMRA makes a mindful
effort to recruiting individuals from a variety
of backgrounds stepping away from a go-to
recruitment platform. And lastly, what I do like
about the TOMRA culture is that TOMRA embraces
change and is always looking for ways to improve
the culture and the individuals that make it.
No matter where we are in our diversity efforts,
TOMRA builds an inclusive culture that makes
everyone more comfortable, connected and
involved at work.

TOMRA’s culture is hard to be summed
up in one word but one that immediately
comes to mind is Family. Families aren’t
perfect, that said, you always know that
all of the family members are on the same
side. This is no different at TOMRA, our
mission is clear and every day every member
of the TOMRA family works to execute it. New
members are welcomed in with open arms
and made to feel at home immediately. I have
experienced this first hand upon joining and
couldn’t be happier to be part of this Looper Family!

TCA IS LIKE A STARTUP WITH FINANCIAL

TOMRA BELMONT
Tomra Belmont, first opened to the public on 1 October 2020.
Depot operators and myself, were exposed to many different
challenges and experiences as the days went by.
From the beginning, we had to learn alongside the customers as they would come in.
It has been a wonderful experience here so far, as the technology is so up to date.
Many customers would struggle to use the machines, but after further explanation, the
understanding grew and the customers would begin to teach their friends and families
alongside receiving our support. Customer interactions has been very important, we
would receive a lot of different suggestions on how we would improve our Belmont
Depot, such as adding tables to place their bags on top of.
Working here, would also offer the staff members a dynamic environment.
Weekends have been our busiest days that we would experience compared to a
lot of the weekdays which were quite slow at the start. Having the support from
not only the depot operators, but our Mentors, Masie and Charee allowed us to
flow through the transition from our quietest days to our busiest days of 72963
containers. The training we received at Tomra also granted us the knowledge to
teach the customers how the sorting system works from the glass machines
to the plastic, cans and cartons machines. At tomra, we also experienced a
road block when a power outage struck causing the machines to turn off.
This lasted an hour and we as a team had to keep all the customers calm
and collected as we figured out when the power would return. Customers
would come back and tell the depot operators that they have appreciated
the transparency and communication received in this situation, as many
were left confused when the machines simply turned off. Numerous
customers would feel confused as to how to set up/ create a Scheme
ID for Containers for change. This was a challenge especially
amongst those who did not carry a mobile device, or struggled to
communicate English. But with great patience, the operators and
myself would guide customers in the right direction to obtain their
scheme ID or explain the use of the Coles Voucher we offer.
When working at Tomra, its very vibrant as we are faced with
many different characters, new faces and along side the usual
customers who are waiting outside, counting the seconds
waiting for the doors to be opened. With many customers
coming throughout the day, we also experience many
different conversations such as the experiences at other
depots that do recycling. Customers have reviewed Tomra
as more technologically advanced than the other places
and enjoy the cleaner and updated look. It has been very
enjoyable working here, and more enjoyable seeing the
smiles and laughter heard in the walls by families.
- Belmont Team
From my first day at TOMRA I’ve been
struck by the passion Loopers apply to their
own work, the effort colleagues put in to
help each other and the pride the whole
team takes in shared success.
Our company has a big vision and a global
cause to fight for but our people are just as
good at attention to detail and making sure
all the little things are done right.
Everyone I’ve worked with at TOMRA
is open to new ideas and serious about
learning new skills, people don’t just talk
about ‘continuous improvement’ – they are
continuously seeking ways to improve.
In summary, a company’s culture
is its people and Loopers are
outstanding people.
Welcoming company, the
happiest I have been in any

willing to help you at work
and outside of work.
- H.S
- James Newton
I often say, TOMRA is the best company I
have worked for (and I have worked for a
few) because of the following 3 things:
1. I get to work in a company purely focussed on
recycling! I have worked in many aspects of
the waste and recycling industry and being in
involved in container deposit scheme is fantastic.
TOMRA has a real and meritorious purpose
(saving the planet), which I get to be part of.
2. I love technology and to be able to genuinely
say I work for a world leader in its field is a
bonus, plus as I say we have a cool app too
and I love a good app!
3. Finally and most importantly, TOMRA cares
about and is genuinely focussed on it’s people.
This is very important to me given as a Manager
who knows the importance of people and
having a positive and vibrant culture, I am well
supported by the company in driving a great
place to work for my team members.
On top if this, TOMRA recognises we must
continually improve and strive to be better.
We don’t have it 100% right yet, however, we
recognise this and are looking to improve.

TO ME
TOMRA...
The TOMRA culture for me is about
teamwork, commitment and safety.
We have many cross functional teams
but what sets TOMRA apart from other
companies is that Loopers from across
the organisation are always willing
to help out other teams even when
it is not part of their responsibilities.
Loopers are committed to the TOMRA
mission, willing to do whatever is
necessary to complete a task or a
project, and enjoy the successes we
achieve. Loopers have embraced the
TOMRA Safe culture, making sure we
all look out for each other. What I like
about the TOMRA culture is the team
spirit and drive to continually
be better tomorrow!
- Phil Parbury
For me the TCA culture revolves around a
place I can enjoy working with others who
share a commitment to a higher purpose.
The shared purpose makes it fulfilling work,
and the enjoyment comes from the fact we
have a collegiate, approachable culture.
There is an openness and honesty and a
willingness to accept mistakes with good
humour. In addition we are made up of
teams of smart, professional people who are
committed and willing to take responsibility
and help each other. People’s input is valued
and differences of opinion are listened to,
respected and worked through.
- Markus Fraval
Tomra culture is about rolling up our sleeves
for our community. Whether that be friends
and family, colleagues and co-workers or
the wider community. We care about our
work, because it benefits the community.
What we do is making a difference in our
surroundings. Our work is educating the
world on the importance of closed-loop
recycling. Changing the physical landscape
as well as the mental. We come from varied
backgrounds, but are unified by our pride
in our work. We show our pride through
our passion. We strive to be the best so our
world can be a better place to live in.
- Jack Graham
What I love most about working at TOMRA is being able
to work amongst passionate and supportive people.
We are a team brought together by a shared sense of
responsibility to protect the environment and better the
communities that we serve. It isn’t just our mission that
inspires me. It is Loopers’ dedication to TOMRA’s mission
that, I believe, underpins our culture and how we work.
TOMRA is a place where you can seize an opportunity, grow,
and develop. Looper’s are entrusted and empowered to
shape their roles and build a TOMRA they would like to be a
part of. We are heard, and we are seen. Not only for what we
contribute but for how we contribute and support each other.
We work together, trusting that even our disagreements are
positive because they will ultimately lead to better outcomes
for both the environment and our customers.
To be a Looper is to be passionate, driven, and unafraid of
the unconventional.

I am supervisor at Joondalup Depot.
I was in construction for 35yrs, I joined
TOMRA in September and have loved
it. The family feeling I feel here [is]
nothing like that on building sites.
