This is a trying time
for all of us, and it’s
more crucial than ever
to work together
SPIKE: The number of people in the City of London claiming Jobseekers Allowance or Universal Credit as of 12 November 2020 was 250.
Number needing financial
aid whilst looking for work
tripled before Christmas
IN the build up to last Christmas, there
were more than tripled the number of City
residents claiming welfare whilst looking
for work, compared to the year before, new
figures show.
With Covid-19 hitting jobs and livelihoods,
local London Assembly Member Unmesh
Desai AM, has called on Ministers to urgently
“patch up the holes” in the welfare system and
make urgent improvements to their job creation
schemes.
Data published this week by the Office
of National Statistics (ONS) shows that the
number of people in the City of London
claiming Jobseekers Allowance or Universal
Credit as of 12 November 2020 was 250. This
compares with 80 claimants in November
2019 – an increase of 213%.
Separate ONS figures confirmed that
London had the highest unemployment rate
in the UK between September and November
last year- having risen to 6.5%.
Research published in January by City Hall
and the Equal Group has also found that black
men in the capital are twice as likely to be
unemployed as their white counterparts.
With a third lockdown now in place for the
foreseeable future, Mr Desai has been calling
for the £20 per week uplift on Universal Credit
to be kept beyond April, when it is due to be
removed, and for the current five-week waiting
period for initial payments to be scrapped.
In October, the Government launched its
Kickstart Scheme, which offers a six-month
work placement to 16-24 years old, who are
on Universal Credit and at risk of long-term
unemployment.
However, Government figures have revealed
that despite their funding of 120,000 new
placements since October, only 1,868 had been
filled by mid-January.
The London Assembly Member is also
warning that the impact of the increasing
number of job losses inflicted by the pandemic
is being seen in London’s private rented sector.
A survey published by Citizen’s Advice in
January showed that one in seven tenants in
the capital are now in rent arrears.
Mr Desai said: “It’s awful to see so many
people lose their livelihoods and so many
businesses close as the pandemic takes its toll.
“Ministers must take action. We need job
creation schemes that are fit for purpose, and
Ministers must urgently patch up the holes
that have been poked through the welfare
system over the last decade.
“I want to see the Government keep the
£20 weekly uplift in Universal Credit in place
beyond April and to scrap the needless five
week waiting period for initial payments.
“With so many renters in the capital having
fallen into arrears, the Government must take
the emergency measures of extending the
evictions ban much further into the future
and raising Local Housing Allowance to cover
average rents in an area.”
THE importance of all of us working
together to tackle the spread of this
virus was underlined by the UK passing a
tragic milestone of 100,000 deaths from
Covid-19 last week, writes City of London
Policy Chair, Catherine McGuinness.
This is a trying time for us all, but with
the vaccine rollout now well underway,
hope is on the horizon.
Hundreds of City residents and frontline
health workers have already received
the first dose of their Covid vaccination
at sites in Hackney, St Bartholomew’s
Hospital, Tower Hamlets and the Excel
Centre.
Going forward more and more of us
will receive our jabs, but it’s important we
wait to be contacted by the NHS until it is
our turn.
In the meantime we need to stay at
home to protect the NHS and save lives.
And we need to get tested if we have
symptoms.
Over 12,000 tests have now been
undertaken at Guildhall Yard, every one
helping save lives and protect the NHS.
We urge anyone with a new, persistent
cough; high temperature; or a loss or
change of sense of smell and/or taste to
book a test straight away through www.
gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test, or by calling
119.
We also encourage all essential workers
coming into the City through the national
lockdown to book a rapid test at least
once every five days.
If your test is positive and you are told to
self-isolate, but you are not able to work
from home and will lose income as a
result of self-isolating, you may be eligible
for a £500 payment. You can call the City
Corporation on 020 7332 3937 to discuss.
If you cannot arrange for food,
medication and other essential items
to be delivered while you and your
household self-isolate, please let the City
Corporation know. You can do this by
emailing col-covid-19@cityoflondon.gov.
uk, or by calling 020 7606 3030.
You can also call City Advice for help
with food, benefits advice and debt on
020 7392 2919, or email them at city.
advice@toynbeehall.org.uk
Self-isolating can be a real challenge
but I’m sure everyone, like me, shares
our desire to protect all of loved ones
and communities from getting infected
with Covid. If we are to get through this
situation, tackle the virus and return to
the City, we all need to abide by the rules
until the most vulnerable in society are
protected.
The City Corporation is well aware that
companies need clarity and a clear plan
from the government on when office
workers can return to Covid-secure
workplaces. A blanket recommendation
to work from home into the spring
risks stalling the capital’s recovery and
damaging long-term competitiveness.
However, I genuinely believe the City
has a bright future ahead despite these
tough times. As we approach the final
stretch of this long and difficult journey,
we all need to stay the course, abide by
the rules and help save lives.

DIY meal kits are all the rage
now. But not all are made
equally. That’s especially true
when you take the meal box
from Lyle’s, the Michelinstarred
restaurant based in
Shoreditch.
This smashes just about every other competitor’s
offerings. And we wouldn’t expect anything
less from these innovative chefs who are known
for pushing the envelope when it comes to
modern cooking. Their success with these
pandemic-born meal kits is not surprising.
And, just as it goes with their usual offerings,
nothing is as simple as it seems. First off, they’ve
got four different boxes to choose from – The
Game Box, The Duck Box, The Lyle’s Box and
The Mid-Week Box.
Each consists of a selection of dishes which
are mostly prepared and only require some
simple reheating and plating.
We tried out their classic Lyle’s Menu Box,
for it is packed with classic Lyle’s dishes. Expect
The pasta legends of Old Street, Officina 00, have
their most popular dishes are included (don’t miss
as well as plain fresh pasta. You can either use their
authentic Italian sauces and cheeses or just get the
You can then add wine, beer, sides, starters
This Valentine’s Day, Two Tribes Brewery are
teaming up with From The Ashes BBQ for a special
edition beer and BBQ box. From The Ashes BBQ
have chosen dishes created on the holy trinity of
smoke, fat and flavour, designed to seamlessly
partner with fresh beers from the King’s Cross
brewery. To drink, the Two Tribes team have
a bunch of their favourites made from fresh
seasonal produce. If you’ve been to Lyle’s and
loved it, then get this bad boy – it’s quintessential
Lyle’s fine dining, but at home.
The menu changes regularly, but is generally
made up of six-courses, priced at £140 for two
people. Not cheap, but entirely worth it. This is
a ‘treat yourself’ meal kit. For when you want to
feel like fine dining royalty but don’t want to put
in all the effort of making it yourself. But, if we
are being honest, few can recreate these dishes
at home.
Even if a pumpkin soup looks fairly simple,
a huge amount of time and skill has gone into
preparing it. They will pack all the pumpkins
into your bowl, add a pumpkin seed reduction,
throw more roasted pumpkin cubes on top, and
then shave a few roasted chestnut shavings and
toasted pumpkin seeds on top for good measure.
What you’re left with is the best god damn
pumpkin soup you’ve ever had. Seriously. These
guys don’t mess about. And this is the standard
of each dish.
Start off with some homemade sourdough
bread with proper homemade butter. Move on
to two starters which will only take you about
10-minutes to prepare. Then grab your main –
usually some top cut of meat. End it on a double
dessert high and make sure to pair it with some
really good wines. Don’t ruin the whole occasion
with cheap wine or beer. You’re better than
that guys.
And what we loved so much about these meal
boxes, is how much you really appreciate the
artistry of chefs who are at the top of their field.
You get a better understanding of what goes into
the dishes they create.
Even though it’s super easy for you to do at
home, you can see how much extra work has
gone into making something so special. We
now have even more respect for these guys, and
a greater desire to support them during these
incredibly challenging times.
For restaurants are still struggling. Insanely
so. That’s why we are all about these DIY kits.
They are the best way to support struggling
restaurants.
You’re keeping these guys alive so that, when
the City eventually reopens, you won’t find all
your favourite foodie spots shut down for good.
Help keep these guys going, all the while feasting
on all manners of deliciousness at home. We can
assure you – you will not regret splashing out
the cash on this one.
NEW OPENING / Biryani Empire
The founders of Gunpowder have launched Empire
Biryani, a new delivery service for London which
is inspired by their memories of India and celebratory
occasions featuring this impressive centrepiece.
Each dish is prepared fresh every morning
and are delivered the same day. Their signature
biryani, the result of a 36-hour preparation, is
steamed on a low heat for several hours until the
rice and meat are fragrant and tender, a cooking
technique known as ‘dum’. The rice is then topped
with shortcrust pastry to bind the flavours and
garnished with fresh spices. It is extraordinary!
IT WAS very recently National HIV
Testing Week (1-7 February), and even
though it has passed, it is still a good
time to test for HIV.
Getting tested regularly reduces the
risk of living with HIV without knowing
it, and means speedier access to HIV treatment
quickly, to help lead a normal life. It’s simple to
find out your HIV status; a finger-prick test is all
it takes, and you don’t even have to step outside
your front door.
For people living in Hackney and the City of
London, getting tested is easy and free, and still
accessible despite COVID-19 measures.
Discreet, at-home HIV and STI testing kits
can be ordered through the Sexual Health
London portal - www.shl.uk. If you do not have
digital access, it’s still simple to order a test,
by calling the local sexual health service on
020 7683 4103, where clinicians will be able to
arrange for you to get a test at a clinic
Anyone diagnosed with HIV can access free
and effective treatment and a wide range of
holistic health and wellbeing support is available
to Hackney and City residents.
Positive East (positiveeast.org) supports
adults living with HIV and Body & Soul
(bodyandsoulcharity.org) provides support to
children, young people, and families affected by
HIV.
Randall Anderson, Chairman of City
of London Corporation’s Community and
Children’s Services Committee, said: “National
HIV Testing Week is a reminder of why it is
important for people to be regularly tested for
HIV.
“While HIV diagnoses have continued to
fall, the latest data from Public Health England
reports that in England, 43% of all diagnoses
were late. This is why it is vital that people are
being tested early. This testing is provided for
free via the Sexual Health London portal.
16 and over, makes it quicker and easier to access
different free methods of contraception, with
the ability to have it delivered to your home, if
needed. This can be accessed through the Sexual
Health London portal.”
Treatments for HIV have come a long way
since the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s.
These days, people living with HIV can access
free treatment that reduces the level of virus in
their bloodstream to such a small level, meaning
they can lead a normal, healthy life, and not
pass the virus onto others, including sexual
partners. This is known as “Undetectable Equals
Untransmittable”, or “U=U”.
Being HIV-positive is no longer a death
sentence, but getting tested to know your HIV
status in the first place is key, as many people
can live with the virus for a long time without
knowing they have it, meanwhile passing it on
to sexual partners.
Also, the sooner someone starts on effective
treatment, the less chance there is of the virus
damaging their health.
Some members of the community are at
higher risk of HIV than others, and more
regular HIV testing is advised. For example,
Terrence Higgins Trust recommends regular
HIV and STI testing for Black African men and
women, if they are having sex without condoms
with new or casual partners.
And for gay, bisexual and other men who
have sex with men (MSM), routine testing for
HIV and other STIs is recommended at least
annually, or every three months if having sex
without condoms with new or casual partners.
PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis) medication is
now freely available to local residents in some of
these groups and they are encouraged to access
it. Taking PrEP before sex can help to protect
you against HIV. Visit homerton.nhs.uk/prep
to find out more.
Using condoms is an effective way of reducing
AT-HOME
HIV TESTING
the transmission of HIV and City and Hackney
residents aged under 25 can access free condoms
through Come Correct - comecorrect.org.uk.
and reproductive health services available to
Each number in our Cross Code grid represents a different letter
of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start
you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid,
then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters
should go in the missing squares.
As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number
in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of
letters as you identify them.
MAGIC SQUARE
