Child Cancer Foundation ambassador Payton, 6, of Auckland has had abusy cancer journey.
Payton’s cancer journey
The interactions between “lovely
nurses” who were so kind and patient
with her timid fiveyearold are fondly
remembered by six year old Child
Cancer Foundation ambassador’s
mother, Kelly.
“Payton is so sweet and helpful but
she was very shy before this
experience. Ithink having to talk and
interact with so many adults really
helped her, she is much more open
with people now.”
Kelly finds it hard to believe so much
has happened in the space of just over
ayear.
At the end of 2017, Kelly was taking
Payton to the doctor regularly as she
couldn’t keep liquids down and
constantly thirsty despite drinking
litres of water daily. She also had
headaches and was always cold;
spending summer bundled up in warm
clothes.
“They kept telling us it was nothing.
We thought maybe if we kept going to
the doctors with these problems they
would eventually refer us to a
specialist.”
Then the young girl started to
develop breasts and doctors sent her to
Middlemore Hospital for tests,
including aCTscan that showed a
growth in Payton’s brain.
Payton was diagnosed with a
cancerous tumour on January 23, 2018.
An MRI showed it was on top of her
pituitary gland the ‘master’ gland
attached to the base of the brain that
secretes hormones.
Payton spent two weeks in the
hormone ward at Starship Hospital
while amedical plan was devised and
to keep her hydrated.
Payton didn’t realise she was sick, as
she was not feeling anything different,
Kelly says.
“We had to tell her that she was sick
and that the doctors were trying to help
her.”
On February 1she had aseven hour
operation which “felt like forever” to
her mum and two brothers who had
been staying with their granddad and
supported by Kelly’s sisters.
Surgeons took asample of the
tumour to determine Payton’s
treatment. After two weeks in hospital
Kelly and Payton went home.
“I’m so very grateful to my family for
their care of my boys, without them I
think Iwould have been lost...I
couldn’t have got through this without
them.”
They headed back to hospital and
started chemotherapy and radiation
treatment.
Kelly still remembers the “amazing
day” after finishing the second round
of chemo when the tumour showed
signs of shrinking.
Payton finished treatment in
September. Her last two MRIs looked
good, with no signs that the tumour was
growing.
Now aged six she was back at school
parttime and had regular
appointments with Auckland
Hospital’s Endocrinology Service to
monitor her hormones and growth. She
has daily medication, some of which
she will be on for life.
