FACING THE SKY, 2011 (edition) -
two editions available - one see images above
(exhibited in Dallas, TX at Forum Gallery, Marlborough, NY, NY)
second set available is darker in colour
(exhibited at the Frederik Meijer Gardens, USA)
3 elements, bronze patinated; edition of 8
each approximately 19” x 13” x 6.5” (48.3 x 33 x 16.5 cm);
mounted to the wall higher than eye-level
(enquire)
What color is the sky? And if we decide for ourselves, whom do we see in there? The center is the reflection
on our self; the outlook is the reflection in the other. A mask as counterpart hides more than
it reveals, solidifies more than it moves and moves more than the sight.
These masks change faces and the perspective as they turn against us in order to make us reveal
ourselves.
1 element, Bronze, unique; patinated; suspended from steel cable
30” x 19” x 17” (76 x 48 x 44 cm)
(Both, the Blue Bell and Blue Echo could be repeated. They would not be exactly the
same as they are moulded organically from the “skin” of a different piece. They are
not an edition, but I have the molds and can make a series of these if desired.)
Cape Breton Shield
Marble Cube; 24” x 24” x 24” (60 x 60 x 60 cm)
“A shield of stone that is resting in an upright position reflects on our uprightness.
It invites for an encounter and moment of repose in the shelter
of its suggestive unfamiliarity.”
Black Shield
Bronz, Patinated; 68” x 54” x 28” (172 x 137 x 70 cm)
The rich, dark surface does not catch any reflections, but seems to
suck the surrounding light into an existence as form. It balances on the
ground and reaches up like a flower, a plant and indicates an inside that
is almost like a half open cocoon and would allow a human body to find
room, curled up, tucked in.
With a surface like black bone or an armor plate, the Black Shield shares
the potential of a shadow; its presence indicates and defines form, but
it intrigues with a hidden presence, a meaning that it does not share. It
plays with our sense of gravity and confronts us with its ‘being there’.
The Guardian
White Italian Marble; 28” x 29” x 106” (71 x 74 x 270 cm)
This sculpture is based on a petrified shark’s tooth. It is a metaphor for a Guardian
to the past, standing between land and the ocean. This work takes up the form of a
small fossil, but by enlarging it to this towering height, it becomes a creature that
is like feather and bone, somewhat human in its posture and also like a being that
just landed in its position with it’s wing-like extensions. In relation to the viewer it
becomes a calming and reassuring force of nature, helping us to feel comfortably
grounded on the earth.
White Moths
White Statuario marble, here on marble boulders.
Ideally I would like to place these on large erratic granite boulders.
Each app. 120cm x 80cm x 12cm / 48” x 32” x 5”
A moth is a creature of the night, that when bathed in golden light, either merges with the surface it finds
itself on, or starts unfolding, soaring into the night to find light. The poetic element and my understanding
of the brief life cycle and compulsive desires of the moth are a reflection of human activity.
Winged Being
Plaster for Bronze cast: 230cm x 101cm x 33cm / 91” x 40” x 13”
This sculpture is available for commission in bronze,
Base optional; Please enquire!
The form reminds of a type of petrified shell that is found in the deteriorating cliffs around the Bay of
Fundy. Calcium turned stone means life turned into mineral. Translating a nature of form into a sculpture
as thing is about the manifestation of a moment of experience. Wings manifested in a “being”
that relates in scale to our own physicality, allows for a meaningful encounter with form. The piece
talk about desire and transformation - and about being grounded on the earth.
