This year’s online programme features two

fun-filled Irish language video storytelling

sessions featuring the performance artist and

Irish language storyteller Cara Ní Mhaonaigh

aka Cara Park. Children can dress up for

the day as their favourite character as they

would normally do at school and enjoy the

storytelling events which premiere on our

YouTube channel at 10am and 12pm.

We will also be running a social media

campaign to raise awareness of the value

of books and reading in children’s lives; we

will be inviting families to submit photos and

videos of them reading and talking about

their favourite Irish language books using the

hashtags #anleabharisfearrliom (my favourite

book) and #roinndosceal (shareyourstory).

Day of New Communities

The Irish language community is diverse

and on Lá na bPobal Nua, we have

an opportunity to share the language

with other communities and with new

communities. This event, jointly organised

by Derry City and Strabane District Council

and Donegal County Council, will invite a

range of communities from a diverse range

of cultural backgrounds across the North

West to an online Irish language taster event

where they can learn more about the Irish

language and engage in a virtual cultural

exchange by sharing words, phrases and

information about their own languages and

cultural backgrounds.

In partnership with

Donegal County Council.

This event is open to our new communities

and to our minority language communities

across the North West.

Scéim an Fháinne

As part of its commitment to

improving access to services and

information in the Irish language, Derry

City and Strabane District Council has,

for more than 10 years, been running

an in-house Irish language learning

programme for staff which aims to

equip employees with the necessary

language skills to deliver services in the

medium of Irish. The Fáinne Scheme

allows staff the opportunity to undergo

an oral examination to assess their

fluency during Irish Language Week

and serves as a powerful motivator

to those who are keen to chart their

learning progress on their journey

towards fluency.

International Women’s Day

‘Celebrating Women and the Irish Language:

Challenges and Opportunities’

To jointly mark International Women’s

Day and Irish Language Week 2021, Derry

City and Strabane District Council will

showcase a range of vlogs video-shorts

in the Irish language featuring women

from a range of backgrounds reflecting

on a diverse range of subjects including

identity, race and representation,

and exploring the IWD21 theme

#ChooseToChallenge. This event will

showcase the rich diversity which exists

within the Irish language community and

will feature ten speakers each reflecting

on their experience of womanhood,

the Irish language, what inspires them,

what challenges they face, what they

have learnt and overcome, and what

advice, wisdom or experience can they

share with other women, and people in

general. The event will be accompanied

by a social media campaign which

showcases a range of different voices

within the Irish language community and

which invites those participating in the

event online to reflect on how challenge

can be transformed into opportunity

Language Awareness

for Council Staff

As part of an ongoing programme of events

to raise staff awareness of language matters,

Derry City and Strabane District Council

will offer an online Language Awareness

Course to Council employees which

covers areas as diverse as the origins of our

indigenous languages – Irish and Ulster-

Scots, language family trees, family names,

naming conventions, placenames, the

influence of the Irish language on Hiberno-

English and the legislative and policy context

which provides a framework for Councils to

engage with regional and minority language

communities.

To mark St Patrick’s Day 2021 and the culmination of Irish

Language Week 2021 the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane

District Council, Councillor Brian Tierney will commission an

original piece of work which celebrates Irish Language Week

and the creative legacy of St Patrick for all communities here.

Artists will be invited by open call to submit proposals to

develop a new and original artwork inspired by the ‘Cry of the

Deer’ verse, also known as St Patrick’s breastplate, which speaks

to theme of seeking solace and strength from the natural world,

and which evokes a message of hope in challenging times. The

completed artwork will be showcased throughout St Patrick’s

Day on our YouTube channel as part of the Council’s Irish

Mo Cheol Thú is an exciting new songwriting competition which invites

young Irish speakers in the Derry City and Strabane District Council

area aged 18 and under to write and submit an original song in Irish

to celebrate the Irish language within Irish Language Week 2021. One

winning song will be selected as a festival anthem and will be shared

across our social media platforms and on YouTube throughout Irish

Language Week. We will also feature the best songs by the

runners-up. Kindly supported by the Ciste21-Irish Language Week

Support Fund administered by Conradh na Gaeilge. #mocheolthu#
