"Doing business from the same location since 1978"
Backpacking: The simplicity of strapping on a pack and hitting the trail makes
backpacking one of the five best outdoor sports and recreational activities
for exercise. Regardless of the intensity and duration of the backpacking
trip, you burn a significant amount of calories while experiencing the great
outdoors. Backpacking for one hour can burn about 600 to 700 calories per
hour while building lower body strength and stamina.
Running: Running is a classic outdoor sport and recreational activity and
one of the best for building endurance, stamina and muscular fitness
while burning calories. Running at 8 mph can burn more than 1,000
calories per hour and you can increase that amount with rugged outdoor
terrain, such as hills or trails.
Cycling: Learning how to ride a bike is a rite of passage for kids, but
cycling can provide a lifetime of exercise and fitness. You can take the
bike on paved roads or trails along with off-road trails to experience
remote locations in the mountains or forests. Along with burning about
400 calories per hour, cycling builds lower body strength while improving
balance, coordination and cardiovascular fitness.
Swimming: Swimming is known for providing a low-impact total body
workout, but it’s also one of the top outdoor sports. You can vary your
swimming activity from freestyle swimming to aqua aerobics in the outdoor
pool or local lake. Swimming is a common alternative to running, cycling or
hiking when the weather turns hot. One hour of swimming burns about
600 to 700 calories and improves endurance, strength and coordination.
INGREDIENTS:
3 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup crushed ice
1 (3.5 ounce) package instant banana pudding mix
1 (3.4 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
3 bananas, sliced
1 (9 inch) pie shell, baked
1 cup heavy cream
DIRECTIONS:
Using an electric mixer, whip 3 cups heavy cream on low speed until
it starts to thicken. Add crushed ice and continue to whip another 4
minutes. Increase speed and add vanilla and banana pudding mixes,
whipping until pudding mixes are blended fully with the cream and the
mixture thickens. Increase speed to high and beat until mixture is stiff.
Line the bottom and half way up the sides of pie crust with banana
slices. Cover bananas with half of the banana cream mixture and top
completely with banana slices. Top with the remaining banana cream
mixture. In a small bowl, whip 1 cup cream until stiff peaks form. Using a
Blueberry Popovers
You could make this on National Blueberry Popover Day March 10th!
INGREDIENTS:
3 tablespoons butter, cut into 6 equal-sized pieces
1 cup whole milk
3 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup fresh blueberries
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar, or to taste
1 lemon, halved
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Put a piece of butter
into each of 6 large muffin cups. Put muffin tin in preheated oven until butter melts,
about 5 minutes. Set aside.
Beat milk, eggs, 1/4 cup sugar and vanilla together in a large bowl. Whisk flour into
the milk mixture until you have a batter. Divide batter between muffin cups. Drop
even amounts of blueberries into each batter portion. Stir 1 tablespoon sugar and
cinnamon together in a small bowl, sprinkle evenly over the batter portions.
Bake in preheated oven for 5 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees
C) and continue baking until popovers are no longer moist in the center, about 25
minutes. Dust tops of popovers with confectioners’ sugar. Squeeze lemon juice over
popovers. Serve warm.
BRIDGELAND HS STUDENT’S EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT BENEFITS SCHOOL
Bridgeland High School senior Logan Stallone completed his Eagle Scout project on Nov. 26 th that included cleaning, renumbering and painting more
than 1,000 parking spaces for Bridgeland High School. Stallone dedicated more than 500 hours to the project and recruited help from other Boy Scout
troops and the Bridgeland High School National Honor Society. Stallone is a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 179 and wanted to complete a project
that would have a lasting impact within the Bridgeland community.
“I had several projects I was considering for my Eagle Scout project, but when the Bridgeland High School administration presented this idea, I thought
it was a golden opportunity to give back to the school I have made so many memories at as a member of the first graduating class that attended
Bridgeland all four years,” Stallone said. “This opportunity provided me with real-world work experience. I learned a lot about project management,
troubleshooting, dedication to my goals and school/work/life balance.”
Stallone began his project by seeking out different vendors and business partners that would help contribute to the project through materials or
monetary donations, including Sherwin Williams, Cas Moya of Prosource Services, Trantex, Painters Repair Show, BenefitU, Rickey Chavez of Gary
Green Realty, Heath Melton of Howard Hughes Corporation and McCurdy Media.
Bridgeland principal Mike Smith said the project has benefited the school in more ways than one.
“Logan’s Eagle Scout project has been very beneficial to the students of Bridgeland High School,” Smith said. “Because of Logan’s work, we are able to
assign students specific spots, which has helped cut down on tardies and frustration. Without the numbered sports, students would need to drive up
and down the rows of the parking lot looking for a parking space every morning. The numbered spots have helped tremendously.”
COMMUNITY GENEROUSLY SUPPORTS 2021
LIVESTOCK SHOW AND SALE
The 27 th Annual CFISD Livestock Show Association Show and Sale, held
Feb. 1 st -6 th at the CFISD Exhibit Center, saw an incredible amount of
generosity from the CFISD community through the live auction, freezer
sale, monetary donations and the first-ever online sale, despite the
COVID-19 pandemic.
The Premium Sale (live auction) unofficially raised $281,950, which is
$23,250 more than last year. Final amounts from the Freezer Sale (animals
not placing high enough for the live auction), Agriculture Mechanics and
Horticulture silent auction and additional gifts to students are not yet
available. More than 130 projects had pre-sale commitments to purchase
and animals in the Freezer Sale sold out in record time. In addition, one
new record was set for Grand Champion Turkey:
• Texas Travel Plaza & Cana Tire Inc. paid $20,000 for the Grand Champion
Turkey exhibited by Mason Oehlers from Jersey Village High School.
“The support from the community was amazing,” said Denise Kubecka,
director of career and technical education. “The common message
community members shared was that they were there to ensure our
FFA students were rewarded for their hard work and they did not want
the pandemic to take anything away from that. So many wanted to be
a part of this event that the students will remember for a lifetime. The
community’s outpouring of support was heartwarming. This would not
have happened without the parents, community members, countless
CFISD departments and, of course, our ag teachers working together on
the common goal to put our students first. Thank you to all. We did it!”
Four high schools have finished receiving new synthetic turf baseball
and softball fields as part of the community-supported 2019 bond
referendum. Cypress Ridge, Cypress Ranch, Cypress Woods and Cypress
Falls high schools each received the improvements this year, at an
estimated cost of $14.5 million. The project was designed by IBI Architects
and constructed by ICI Construction.
“A three-phase plan is being implemented for the design and
construction of the fields,” said Roy Sprague, CFISD chief operations
officer. “Phase 1 started in 2019, with those four campuses having
been substantially completed. Phase 2 design work is being completed
and construction is anticipated to start in April 2021 and the Phase 3
campuses design work will start in early 2022.”
Phase 2 is scheduled to include Cypress Creek, Cypress Lakes, Jersey
Village and Langham Creek high schools. Phase 3 is scheduled to include
Cypress Springs, Cypress Park and Bridgeland high schools. The Cy-Fair
High School synthetic turf fields will be constructed as part of the Cy-Fair
Multi-Campus Master Plan Improvements, with design starting in late
2021.
The synthetic turf, supplied by FieldTurf USA, allows for almost immediate
playability after rainfall; as well as less groundskeeping and maintenance,
year-round availability and increased safety.
“We are excited for the start of our upcoming softball and baseball
seasons and the recent addition of our four baseball and four softball
turfed fields,” said Ray Zepeda, CFISD director of athletics. “The entire
project will allow us to have a facility that is much more useful and
functional for our programs, athletes and coaches.”
In addition to the surface improvements, the project also increased the
seating capacity at the Cypress Ridge and Cypress Ranch softball fields
and the Cypress Woods and Cypress Falls baseball facilities.
“We are hopeful that this will allow us to host more playoff contests within
our school district,” Zepeda said. “The quality of the materials and the scope
of the entire project reflects our communities’ commitment to having firstclass
facilities for our athletes. We sincerely appreciate the support of our
community and will certainly take great pride in our new facilities.”
We have done everything we can to try and reopen our doors, including
becoming the first theater in the country to install hospital grade UV lights
in our air filtration system. We even offered a safe and distanced indoor
concert as well as an indoor offering from our educational touring unit
this past fall. And when those projects proved financially challenging and
COVID numbers spiked again, we created “Light Up the Lot” and moved
all our programming outdoors. We’ve never given up. We never will give
up. But due to circumstances beyond our control, we find ourselves
needing to pivot once more. Which brings us to the announcement of
our virtual season. Go to www.adplayers.org for all the information.
