STONE GATE GUARDIANS

The Stone Gate Guardians formed

in November 2020 are a team of

volunteers made of up residents of

Stone Gate.

Our members donate their time, tools

and talents to help our fellow neighbors

of Stone Gate who are in true need of

help and do not have the physical and

financial ability to resolve HOA violation

problems with their homes or yards.

About 40 amazing neighbors in Stone

Gate have asked to join the Guardians

since our inception. These folks

volunteer to help with yard work, minor

home improvement projects, power

washing, cleaning up patios, touching

up paint and we have volunteers who

are willing to make grocery store runs,

cook a meal and even offer a caring

heart to someone in need of a friend. We

help our fellow neighbor on a one time

basis and we are not here for ongoing

services nor are we interested in taking

business away from service contractors

or kids trying to earn a few bucks.

So far we have helped two families.

One is a widowed CFISD teacher with 3

kids who needed her trees and bushes

trimmed as well as power washing.

She had lost not only her husband,

but also her brother and mother in a

short time frame and therefor has no

family nearby to help her. The other

family is an older disabled couple who

is a retired preacher and a veteran. We

resolved their drainage problems by

cleaning out their rain gutters, cleaning

out dead plants and installing new

plants as well as rock and mulch. The streetlight was also blocked by a tree which we trimmed to

provide the neighborhood with more night time safety as they live on a busy corner.

We have had some minor requests such as changing a light bulb for a widow who could not reach the

light in her tall front door entrance.

Small jobs like this are something that shouldn’t require a service visit from a contractor and we

can quickly be remediated simply by reaching out to us on Facebook in the Stone Gate Residents

Facebook page. Simply post a message to the Residents page and start with “Stone Gate Guardians.”

For jobs that are bigger than replacing an out of reach light bulb, we ask for a nomination to be made

from a neighbor or family member. We will need to understand the problem as well as the resident’s

situation so we can determine the most appropriate resolution. Please remember, we are volunteers

who serve those who are truly in need. If folks have the means to fix their issues, then they should

employ professional services to do so.

We raise money to help cover the cost of the supplies and materials used to help these families.

We could not do this work without these donations, most of which comes from other Stone Gate

Residents and a fair amount has come from folks that have heard of us and live in other cities!

If you would like to become a member, make a donation or nominate a neighbor in need please

contact Trey Smith, Stone Gate Guardians Founder 832-859-8827.

S-G OWNERS ASSOCIATION, INC. GATE AND ACCESS CONTROL REGISTRATION FORM

***IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR EVERY RESIDENT – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY***

Attention Residents!

Please be advised that the Board recently came to an agreement to change vendors for gate/camera maintenance and the

new vendor started in November.

Unfortunately, we have an urgent concern with the gate telephone entry callboxes and the Board is close to finding a resolution.

Our gate telephone entry callboxes are failing and need a complete upgrade. The existing system is no longer in production

and parts for repairs have become increasingly difficult to find. Some of the gate entry callboxes have stopped working

and is why we have gates that remain open.

The other concern is that the computer that stores the database for the entire gate system failed and had to be replaced. We

lost the data for all 24 gates on the Stone Gate and Canyon Lakes at Stone Gate side of the community and need to rebuild

the entire database. While we work towards rebuilding, we are not able to add any new data to the individual gate callboxes

as it will overwrite the existing data that is still working for many of our entrances. The onsite team will be required to re-enter

the data for every single resident into their specific gate before they can upload.

This presents an opportunity for us to ensure that we have the most current information from you in our system. We are requiring

every resident that lives in a gated section to complete the attached form and return it at your earliest convenience.

Residents can also complete the form online at https://forms.gle/ju5TkzvaCz9royvt8

The Board continues to research their different options to replace the gate telephone entry callboxes that will best suit our

needs for the next 10-20 years. An announcement will be made once they come to an agreement.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Thank you

Sincerely, Board of Directors

KEEP OUR LAKES CLEAN:

Please help us keep our community beautiful by NOT THROWING trash

and debris into the lakes. In addition, there is NO SWIMMING, BOATING

OR FISHING in the LAKES.

PLEASE BE OBSERVANT OF POSTED TRAFFIC

SIGNS, SPEED AND GATES

Please respect the posted traffic speeds and stop signs in our community.

They are here to make our community a safe and pleasant place to live.

With the pleasant weather, our children are out enjoying our amenities.

Use extra caution when driving near our parks and community pools.

Please also use the correct side of the gates for entry and exit.

PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS AND GEESE

Spring is the air and this lovely weather has many of us visiting our

community parks and ponds. It can be tempting to feed the ducks

as geese as many of us have grown up thinking that this was an

environmentally responsible and humane way to dispose of old or stale

bread. However, feeding ducks and geese is actually unhealthy and

potentially dangerous for the birds. This seemingly generous act, in fact,

can be extremely harmful.

Bread and similar products such as crackers, chips, doughnuts and

popcorn have little nutritional value. Without healthy food and proper

nutrition the ducks and geese will quickly succumb to disease and death.

Feeding ducks and geese can lead to the following problems as well:

• Duckling malnutrition - in areas where ducks are regularly fed bread

the ducklings will not receive adequate nutrition for proper growth and

development.

• Overcrowding - Where food is easy to come by, ducks and other waterfowl

will lay more eggs and the pond or lake will become overcrowded. This

makes it more difficult for the birds to seek out healthier food sources

and increases territorial aggression, especially during mating season. It

will also cause ducks to cross busy streets in search of food.

• Pollution - What happens to all that bread that is not eaten? It causes

algae growths, pollution and can eventually eradicate fish and other life

in the vicinity.

• Diseases - A diet rich in carbohydrates leads to greater fecal production

and bird feces easily harbors bacteria responsible for numerous diseases

including avian botulism.

• Attraction of pests - Rotting leftover food attracts other unwelcome

pests such as rats, mice and insects. These pests can also harbor additional

diseases that can be dangerous to humans.

If you care about ducks and geese, do not feed them. They can live

longer, healthier lives by relying on natural food sources such as aquatic

plants, seeds, grasses and insects rather than taking handouts from willmeaning

humans. Now that you know, you can help by not feeding the

ducks and geese and by educating other duck lovers.

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS AND LINKS

Please remember to lock your car doors. Also, if you see anything

suspicious, please call the Constables right away. Even if it turns out to

be nothing, they would rather check it out to keep the neighborhood

safe. Every now and again, something that people may think is nothing,

has actually turned into something. Here are some helpful websites: The

first is for the Vacation Watch. When the residents leave for vacation, they

can fill out the form and as part of their normal duties, the Constables

will drive by and check on their residence. www.constablepct5.com/

COMMUNITY GENEROUSLY SUPPORTS 2021

LIVESTOCK SHOW AND SALE

The 27 th Annual CFISD Livestock Show Association Show and Sale, held

Feb. 1 st -6 th at the CFISD Exhibit Center, saw an incredible amount of

generosity from the CFISD community through the live auction, freezer

sale, monetary donations and the first-ever online sale, despite the

COVID-19 pandemic.

The Premium Sale (live auction) unofficially raised $281,950, which is

$23,250 more than last year. Final amounts from the Freezer Sale (animals

not placing high enough for the live auction), Agriculture Mechanics and

Horticulture silent auction and additional gifts to students are not yet

available. More than 130 projects had pre-sale commitments to purchase

and animals in the Freezer Sale sold out in record time. In addition, one

new record was set for Grand Champion Turkey:

• Texas Travel Plaza & Cana Tire Inc. paid $20,000 for the Grand Champion

Turkey exhibited by Mason Oehlers from Jersey Village High School.

“The support from the community was amazing,” said Denise Kubecka,

director of career and technical education. “The common message

community members shared was that they were there to ensure our

FFA students were rewarded for their hard work and they did not want

the pandemic to take anything away from that. So many wanted to be

a part of this event that the students will remember for a lifetime. The

community’s outpouring of support was heartwarming. This would not

have happened without the parents, community members, countless

CFISD departments and, of course, our ag teachers working together on

the common goal to put our students first. Thank you to all. We did it!”

The following Livestock Royalty representatives were chosen:

• Show King - Reagon Carter from Bridgeland FFA;

• Show Queen - Evyn Barnes from Bridgeland FFA;

• Mr. Show Teen - Lucas Payan from Bridgeland FFA;

• Miss Show Teen - Emily Fayard from Cypress Woods FFA; and

• Top Hand (Sales) - Kaitlyn Smith from Cypress Woods FFA.

FOUR HIGH SCHOOLS RECEIVE FIRST WAVE OF

SYNTHETIC TURF FIELDS

Four high schools have finished receiving new synthetic turf baseball

and softball fields as part of the community-supported 2019 bond

referendum. Cypress Ridge, Cypress Ranch, Cypress Woods and Cypress

Falls high schools each received the improvements this year, at an

estimated cost of $14.5 million. The project was designed by IBI Architects

and constructed by ICI Construction.

“A three-phase plan is being implemented for the design and

construction of the fields,” said Roy Sprague, CFISD chief operations

officer. “Phase 1 started in 2019, with those four campuses having

March 2021 | S-G Owners Association, Inc.

een substantially completed. Phase 2 design work is being completed

and construction is anticipated to start in April 2021 and the Phase 3

campuses design work will start in early 2022.”

Phase 2 is scheduled to include Cypress Creek, Cypress Lakes, Jersey

Village and Langham Creek high schools. Phase 3 is scheduled to include

Cypress Springs, Cypress Park and Bridgeland high schools. The Cy-Fair

High School synthetic turf fields will be constructed as part of the Cy-Fair

Multi-Campus Master Plan Improvements, with design starting in late

2021.

The synthetic turf, supplied by FieldTurf USA, allows for almost immediate

playability after rainfall; as well as less groundskeeping and maintenance,

year-round availability and increased safety.

“We are excited for the start of our upcoming softball and baseball

seasons and the recent addition of our four baseball and four softball

turfed fields,” said Ray Zepeda, CFISD director of athletics. “The entire

project will allow us to have a facility that is much more useful and

functional for our programs, athletes and coaches.”

In addition to the surface improvements, the project also increased the

seating capacity at the Cypress Ridge and Cypress Ranch softball fields

and the Cypress Woods and Cypress Falls baseball facilities.

“We are hopeful that this will allow us to host more playoff contests within

our school district,” Zepeda said. “The quality of the materials and the scope

of the entire project reflects our communities’ commitment to having firstclass

facilities for our athletes. We sincerely appreciate the support of our

community and will certainly take great pride in our new facilities.”

March Gardening Tips

VEGETABLES: Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and

snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans,

cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or

higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon.

LAWN: Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this

part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When

resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety

Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass.htm.

TREES AND SHRUBS: Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as

possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a

dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of

the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during

early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have

bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer

analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden

planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because

you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

NATIONAL PLANT A FLOWER DAY - MARCH 12TH

Spring is just around the corner and March 12 th is the day to participate

in National Plant a Flower Day. Each year this day is dedicated to the

planting of flowers and looking forward to the spring season. Flower

gardening has become a hobby for many, young and old and National

Plant a Flower Day is a start to the new season each year.

Marigolds and Daffodils are the flowers of this month. It’s good to know

the zone you live in to determine which flowers grow as perennials (those

that grow back every year) in your area and which are considered annuals

(those that require planting every year). To find out more check out the

USDA site for Hardiness Zones.

Seeds can be started inside and set in a sunny window. When the weather

is nicer, move those plants outside. Keep the soil moist, but not wet and

follow the instructions on the seed package for proper germination of

the seedling. For those who can’t wait, get out those seed catalogs and

start planning your next flower garden.

Are you in a warmer climate? Then it’s time to get out the trowel and

the garden gloves and start turning over some new soil. Sow some new

seeds, bulbs or plants and nurture those blossoms into a brilliant blaze

for the whole neighborhood to enjoy.

Tips for Starting a Flower Garden: Start with a potted garden. If you aren’t

ready to tear up a patch of lawn, this is a good way to go. They do require

more watering, but less care overall. • Select plants that grow well in

your spot. Some plants grow well in the shade and others prefer the sun.

Others love both! • Did you know gardeners who prefer perennial gardens

have to thin their flower beds every couple of years? They also like to

share the extra bulbs and seeds with those who are new to gardening,

so if you know someone with a green thumb, get to know them better.

You might get some free plants, advice and a budding friendship! • Local

greenhouses stock plants that grow well in your area. Don’t be afraid to

ask them questions and shop there frequently. • Let’s all work together

by planting a flower and helping make the world a more beautiful place.
