Mental Health Challenges
Facing Our Kids During COVID-19
Behavioral Hospital Meets the Needs of the Entire Community
The COVID-19 pandemic has
caused widespread economic damage
and isolated families in unprecedented
ways. Parents have to juggle
both educating and caring for their
children, and millions of Americans
lost not only their jobs but also their
sense of stability.
It is having an especially profound
impact on the emotional well-being of
children. Kids Count policy report, a
study that examined how households
with children are faring during the
pandemic, reported, “mental health,
already a pressing issue for young
people, has become an acute concern
for millions.” Its findings are primarily
based on surveys conducted by the
U.S. Census Bureau.
One mental health facility in
our community, Central Florida
Behavioral Hospital, located
at 6601 Central Florida Parkway
in Orlando, is more than rising to
the challenge. According to Gavi
Berman, director of business development
and community outreach,
“the pandemic is affecting kids tremendously,
and we have seen that
firsthand. Stability for children, particularly
when it comes to the family
dynamic, is crucial. The pandemic
has rocked all sense of stability, and
unfortunately, that trickles down to the
children in our communities.”
Dr. Nasreen Razack-Malik is
board-certified in child, adolescent
and general psychiatry. She has
served as the chief child and adolescent
psychiatrist at CFBH since 2008,
when the hospital opened, and oversees
all youth programming and
treatment.
Dr. Malik explained that children
and adolescents are more at risk during
this current period of isolation and
social distancing.
“These populations may be affected
by factors that contribute to a framework
for depression,” she said.
The contributing factors can include
coping with the loss of a family member
or a family member’s job, interruption
of daily routines, absence of
extracurricular activities or conflict,
and lack of support in the home due
to the pandemic. Her therapy includes
finding healthy ways to cope with
change and realizing ways to move
forward. Adding medication to therapy
may also be required.
Dr. Malik stated that she is “very
proud of how the hospital has stepped
up to meet the increased needs of the
community during this crisis. We recognized
that the demand outweighed
the available services and added
additional inpatient and outpatient resources
for children and adolescents.”
Facing the additional challenges
presented by COVID-19, the hospital’s
13-member leadership staff and the
18 board-certified medical specialists
set a goal of meeting those needs.
Central Florida Behavioral Hospital
responded immediately by adding 12
new beds to the children’s unit and
developing a virtual intensive outpatient
program (IOP) via telehealth for
adolescents.
Telehealth enables patients to remotely
connect with clinicians by
phone, tablet or computer. The program,
utilizing HIPAA-compliant video
and communications technology,
allows patients to see and speak with
a doctor, nurse or therapist just as during
an in-person consultation in real
time. The adolescent intensive outpatient
program meets online three days
a week for three hours a day and features
participation in comprehensive
group therapy, individual and family
sessions as well as ongoing psychiatric
consultations and medication
management.
Dr. Malik explained that the telehealth
track at the hospital is now
expanding to four separate tracks, depending
on youth client needs.
“Early intervention and awareness
and access to treatment will contribute
to a positive prognosis,” she said.
The doctor offered clues to tell if
your child is suffering from depression
or just momentarily “acting out.”
Parents should observe changes in
mood and if “a child is becoming
more isolated and withdrawing from
all activities that they normally enjoy.
Children may also feel hopeless or
helpless, become overwhelmed easily,
or feel sad and tearful most of the
time.”
If your child is experiencing changes
in sleeping or eating patterns, those
can also be signs.
Decreasing grades, alone, are not
For more than 10 years, the teams at Orlando Eye Institute and Parbhu Oculofacial Plastic
Surgery have proudly treated the residents of Dr. Phillips and Windermere, serving their eye
and oculoplastic needs with compassion, respect and professionalism. As the practices have
grown, thanks to the community’s support, they have been able to integrate cutting-edge
technologies into their services and broaden the scope of what they can provide. While it
has always been about improving the quality of their patients’ lives, the practices now have
a clearer vision of how to do so — optimizing vision, decreasing spectacle and eyedrop use,
bringing comfort and instilling confidence in their patients’ appearances — in a safe, welcoming
environment that their patients have come to expect. Recently, they added aesthetic
services, and they plan on continuing to evolve in the upcoming years in an effort to meet
patients’ ever-changing needs. In the past year alone, they have added exciting new offers
such as the Light Adjustable Lens for cataract surgery and minimally invasive surgical face-lifts.
In order to reflect this open-minded concept, Orlando Eye Institute and Parbhu Oculofacial
Plastic Surgery have combined and changed their names to Remagin. While their commitment
to their patients’ care remains the same, they can now provide a wider array of treatments
underneath one roof, without the restrictions or barriers of conventional thinking. Instead,
they want their patients to concentrate on the things that make them happy and to help their
patients get there. Refine. Refocus. Remagin.
thousands of patients with chronic sinusitis, nasal obstructions and external nasal deformities.
His double board-certified expertise enables him to evaluate the nose and sinus structures as
a whole and treat them in a complete manner, achieving optimal functional and aesthetic
outcomes. Patients no longer need to find a separate specialist to deal with both cosmetic and
medical needs. Many of the facility’s referrals come by word of mouth from happy patients.
Some come after experiencing unsatisfactory results elsewhere. Dr. Han was educated and
trained at Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He has
published many articles on the subject of rhinoplasty and sinusitis in leading professional
plastic surgery and rhinology journals.
Southwest Orlando Bulletin

Patient volumes are hitting only
74% of pre-pandemic levels, according
to the American Dental
Association. With many people delaying
dentist office visits, at-home
oral care routines are more important
than ever.
Take your at-home dental hygiene
routine to a new level of clean with
these tips from “America’s dentist,”
Dr. Bill Dorfman:
• Use the best tools. An electric
toothbrush has the power needed
for optimal brushing results and has
been proven to be far more effective
than a manual toothbrush. One new
game-changing option, the Oral-B
iO, has reimagined the electric
toothbrush. The result of six years of
dedicated research with dental professionals,
its advanced features like
AI recognition and micro-vibrating
bristles help ensure you reach all
areas of your mouth to provide a
deeper cleaning of teeth and gums,
as proven in clinical tests.
“I always recommend Oral-B, because
not only do they make topof-the-line
products, they’re actively
Take Your Dental
Hygiene Routine to a New Level
Proper dental hygiene can prevent dental
diseases and bad breath.
making at-home oral care more accessible
through their $1 million
commitment to the Dental Lifeline
Network, a nonprofit that provides
access to life-changing dental care
to those in need,” said Dr. Dorfman.
In fact, a new initiative is bringing
this brush, which offers a professional
clean feeling with every use,
to those who need it most. Oral-B
is partnering with 50 dental professionals
nationwide to surprise 200
deserving patients with an Oral-B iO
power toothbrush.
• Brush at least two times daily.
Chasing away morning breath
makes it easy for most people to remember
to brush in the morning, but
a nighttime brushing habit is equally
as important. It dislodges food debris
accumulated throughout the day
and reduces bacteria buildup overnight.
It’s also a good idea to brush
during the day if you eat or drink
acidic foods and beverages, which
can be harmful to enamel.
• Be thorough, yet gentle. The outer
surfaces of your teeth may be most
visible when you flash a grin, but the
inside and top surfaces need attention,
too. While you focus on reaching
every nook and cranny, avoid
brushing too hard. Excess pressure
can cause serious damage to your
mouth and lead to gum recession. To
ensure an all-around clean, brush for
two full minutes with an appropriate
amount of pressure, methodically focusing
on different regions.
• Combat contamination. Store
your toothbrush away from others
so you don’t share bacteria. Prevent
mold and bacteria growth by air drying
between uses. Inspect bristles for
breakdown, which is a signal your
brush is no longer effectively cleaning
and you need a replacement
head or new brush.
• Go beyond brushing. On a daily
basis, gently floss between each
tooth individually and rub against
each tooth at the gum line to loosen
plaque and debris. Pay attention to
signs you need to visit the dentist.
Schedule a visit if you notice redness
or tenderness in your gums, experience
pain or sensitivity to temperature
changes, or have other unusual
symptoms causing discomfort.
At a time when health is top of
mind, have the right knowledge and
tools to optimally maintain your dental
hygiene routine.
As the pandemic continues to restrict
many of the places you are
able or inclined to go, finding ways
to stay active is important for keeping
the body and mind healthy and
happy. Here are some ideas for new
hobbies to try:
• Learn a language. Bonjour!
Hola! With an array of online language
classes and tutorials available
at your fingertips, learning a
new language is more accessible
than ever. Start now while you fantasize
about a post-pandemic vacation
overseas.
• Play an instrument. Learning to
play an instrument is not only a great
distraction for the current moment, it
can provide you with years of joy as
your skill develops. Consider starting
your musical journey on a Casiotone
keyboard. By connecting the keyboard
to the free Chordana Play
app, you can easily learn to play
your favorite songs from downloaded
MIDI files. Once you’ve mastered
the instrument, the portability of the
keyboard will come in handy, whether
you play solo or join a band.
Hobbies to Keep Your Body
and Mind Healthy and Happy
• Become a home chef. From sushi
to soufflé to dumplings, there are
likely a range of dishes you have
never attempted making at home.
Tackle your culinary bucket list, one
by one.
• Go hiking. There is no better
hobby for staying fit and
©leszekglasner/iStock via Getty Images Plus
Hiking is an
excellent way to
explore nature
while getting
exercise.
communing with nature than hiking,
which works every muscle of the
body, boosts cardiovascular health
and even improves mood and mental
well-being. Track your hike using
a wearable tech tool geared for outdoor
enthusiasts, such as a watch
from the Casio’s Pro Trek line. Quad
sensor technology packs all the
measurements you need into one
compact hiking watch, including a
compass, altitude/barometer and
temperature measurements, along
with an accelerometer that tracks
step count. Calorie calculations use
both step count and altitude information
to take upgrades and downgrades
into consideration, and data
is recorded by the Pro Trek connected
app.
• Volunteer. At a time when many
people are struggling, consider volunteering
your time to serve those
in need. There are plenty of safe,
socially distant volunteer opportunities,
from delivering meals to the
homebound to videoconferencing
with socially isolated seniors to helping
boost adult literacy via remote
tutoring.
Amid the ongoing pandemic,
staying busy and positive may take
creativity. However, discovering
new hobbies and pursuits you love
can nurture the body, mind and
soul.
PRINT MEDIA ... KEEPING
Data released from the Industrial Fabrics
• Print magazines outperform all other media in
A primary care physician is more
than just a doctor. Over time, he or she
learns the nuances of your medical history,
your reaction to medications, your
health goals, your lifestyle, your treatment
preferences and whether a caregiver
is supporting you in managing
your health.
That intimate knowledge can make
a big difference to your health. Studies
show that people with primary care
doctors are more likely to get preventive
services, including cancer screenings,
and report significantly better health
care access. And, patients in states that
spend more on primary care have fewer
hospitalizations and emergency room
visits.
“Primary care doctors help you move
through the continuum of life,” said Dr.
Saurabha Bhatnagar, chief medical
officer and head of technology
and performance at UnitedHealthcare
Medicare & Retirement. “As we get
older, our needs change, and our functional
ability changes. It’s nice to have
someone who knows you guide you
through the health care system as that
happens.”
Bhatnagar provided the following 10
tips to help you choose the right primary
care doctor for you:
• Ask around. The first step to finding
a great doctor is to talk to your family
members and friends about their doctors.
A recommendation from someone
you trust is a good way to identify a
highly skilled, helpful physician. But remember,
every person is different. Just
because a doctor was perfect for your
neighbor or your best friend doesn’t
mean that he or she is right for you.
• Map it out. Since primary care is
the conduit for everyday health needs,
it’s important that your primary care
doctor be located somewhere convenient
to you. You won’t want to travel
very far when you’re not feeling well.
And, if your doctor’s office is conveniently
located, you’ll hopefully be more
inclined to keep appointments for physicals
and other preventive care when
you’re healthy.
• Make sure you’ve got coverage.
Once you’ve identified some possible
candidates, check whether they work
with your health plan. If you have traditional
Medicare, call the doctor’s office
and ask if they accept Medicare
Choosing a Primary Care Physician
patients. If you have a Medicare
Advantage plan, call your insurance
provider or check your plan’s website to
see if the doctor is in your plan’s network.
Most plans charge more if you
see a doctor outside the network, so it’s
important to take this step before scheduling
an appointment.
• Do a quality check. If you have a
Medicare Advantage plan, check with
your insurance company to see if they
have any information about the quality
ratings of specific primary care doctors
in your network. You can also use the
Physician Compare tool on medicare.
gov to see if your doctor has participated
in any activities that indicate they
provide high-quality care.
Finally, check to see whether your
doctor is board-certified through the
Certification Matters site, which the
American Board of Medical Specialties
maintains. Board-certified primary care
doctors have not only met the licensing
requirements of their states but also
passed comprehensive exams in internal
medicine. Doctors also must keep
up with the latest developments in their
fields to maintain their certification, so
you can be sure they’re giving you upto-date
advice.
• Place a cold call. Dr. Bhatnagar
advises that patients call a potential
doctor’s office for a first impression of
the practice.
“You can tell a lot by the phone etiquette
of the office staff,” he said. “Ask
if they’re taking new patients and see
how they answer. If they say, ‘The next
Choosing a
primary care
doctor may be
one of the most
important health
decisions you'll
make.
appointment is in 90 days, have a great
day,’ that’s a lot different than saying,
‘He’s really busy, and we always make
time for existing patients, so it might take
us some time to fit a new patient in.’”
• Ask about logistics and whether
they are set up for virtual appointments.
Asking questions during that initial call
can provide a sense of how an office
runs. How does the office handle prescription
refills? How do they let you
know about test results? Can you email
your doctor or schedule appointments
online? Will the office call to remind you
if you’re overdue for an annual screening
or a flu shot?
You might also ask whether they offer
same-day appointments and how long
patients typically sit in the waiting room
for an appointment.
And now that virtual visits are becoming
more common, ask whether
the doctor conducts this type of visit
and how easy it is to schedule a virtual
appointment.
• Keep your needs in mind. Every
person has unique health needs, and
those needs change as people age.
Ask your doctor about their specialties
or areas of interest.
For example, a physician who specializes
in sports medicine may not be
the best choice if you are not a serious
athlete. But if you have a chronic condition
like diabetes, you may want to
look for a doctor with a special interest
in diabetes care or a large number of
patients with diabetes in their practice.
If you have multiple complex medical
issues, you may benefit from seeing a
geriatrician. Geriatricians specialize in
the care of older patients. Those are
things to ask when you make that first
call.
• Look at the bigger picture. During
the first visit, it’s important to make sure
your doctor’s philosophy of care lines up
with your own. Consider asking these
questions: Why did the doctor decide
to go into primary care? What is their
favorite thing about being a doctor?
What do they wish more patients would
do after they leave the doctor’s office?
If your doctor’s outlook on patient
care aligns nicely with your preferences,
you’ll be more likely to follow their
recommendations in between appointments.
So, take this information into
consideration when deciding whether
to stick with a doctor following your first
appointment.
• Avoid culture shock. Every cultural
group has its own customs, ideas and
taboos about medical care, so find a
doctor who not only speaks your language
but is sensitive to your cultural,
religious or other personal convictions.
If you are a member of the LGBTQ
community, for example, you will want
to make sure your physician is sensitive
to your concerns and knowledgeable
about LGBTQ health issues.
It is important that your doctor is culturally
aware and respects your ideas
and traditions.
• Trust your gut. Your primary care
doctor is going to be a problem-solver
and an important advocate for your
health. It’s critical that you trust them
and feel comfortable asking questions.
The American Academy of Family
Physicians recommends that after your
first appointment, you ask yourself the
following questions:
• Do you feel at ease with this doctor?
• Did the doctor show an interest in
getting to know you?
• Did they answer all your questions?
• Did they explain things in a way
you understood?
If something seems off, trust your instincts
and look for a new doctor who is
a better fit. You should be comfortable
with whomever you choose; remember,
this person will be an important advocate
for your health and well-being in
the years to come.
Foods high in potassium, an essential
mineral and electrolyte, offer
health and nutritional benefits.
Potassium helps muscles, including
the heart, expand and contract, but
for people whose kidneys can’t filter
out excess potassium, its buildup can
be deadly.
Many foods like bananas have
potassium, but some have more than
others. For the 37 million Americans
living with kidney disease, the
American Kidney Fund’s Beyond
Bananas educational campaign
stresses the importance of controlling
and managing potassium levels for
better health outcomes. High potassium,
known as hyperkalemia, is one
of the common and serious side effects
of kidney disease.
If you have kidney disease, you
are at risk for hyperkalemia, because
your kidneys can’t remove
the extra potassium in your blood.
This can be dangerous, as high potassium
can cause heart attacks or
even death. However, some people
do not feel symptoms of high potassium
until it’s too late and their heart
Kidney Disease and Potassium
common symptoms are tiredness or
weakness, nausea, muscle pains or
cramps, trouble breathing, unusual
heartbeat and chest pains.
For those with kidney disease, high
potassium is not just a measurement
at a point in time but rather a chronic
condition. Some of the most common
causes of high potassium in those
who have kidney disease are eating
high-potassium foods, using a salt
substitute that contains potassium,
constipation, missing dialysis treatments
or taking certain medications
or herbal supplements. A food with
250 milligrams of potassium or more
per serving is considered a highpotassium
food. Some examples
include bananas, grapefruits, dried
fruits, potatoes, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes,
beans, most meats and fish,
dairy products, nuts and chocolate.
If you are on dialysis or your doctor
recommends you eat low-potassium
foods, aim for a daily potassium goal
of 2,500 milligrams and no more
than 3,000 milligrams per day. Lowpotassium
foods include cauliflower,
peppers, cucumbers, grapes, strawberries,
blueberries, bread, rice and
pasta. Your doctor or dietitian may
adjust these goals to fit your needs.
High potassium can be controlled
long-term by choosing the right
foods, taking medication and following
simple tips such as these:
• Ask your health care provider
and dietitian to help you create a
potassium management plan.
• Call your insurance company to
find out if your insurance plan covers
nutritional counseling.
• Use a potassium food guide to
help you select tasty, lower-potassium
food options.
• Find low-potassium recipes such
as those online in American Kidney
Fund’s Kidney Kitchen.
• Download a potassium tracker
to monitor how much potassium
goes into your body every day.
• Talk to your health care provider
about finding a potassium binder, a
medicine that sticks to the potassium in
your body and prevents some of it from
being taken into your bloodstream.
