HIROSHIMA CITY NAKA INCINERATION PLANT

HIROSHIMA 2004 TANIGUCHI AND ASSOCIATES

Built on a point near the ocean, this incineration plant is at the end of a main

Hiroshima axis, Yoshino Street. Designed like a tunnel so the street can

continue on to the ocean. The plant, inside this glass tunnel, is dominating

and numerous on-site mock-ups and models were used to determine how to

illuminate and reveal its complex depth. White light was used to create a

futuristic appearance.

The first “W” brand hotel to penetrate the Asian market

was a collaboration of many designers and architects to

created a new hotel experience through a wide variety

of spaces. This, also, made it necessary to incorporate

new light sensations into the design. Inviting, calming,

time-warping light, along with artistic shadows indicate

the passage of time. In tune with the innovative interior

design of the hotel, the lighting goes beyond functionally,

appealing to the human senses.

●LPA 2004 Activities & 2005 Expectations

■Completed Projects of 2004

LPA participated in many lighting planning and design projects throughout 2004, many of which can be viewed on

he front page of this report. With the Singapore office (Lighting Planners Associates (S) Pte Ltd.) in its fourth year,

many of the completed projects are not only in Japan, but also overseas. Some of the large-scale projects

completed in Singapore include: The New Supreme Court Building (Architect : Norman Foster), New National

Library (Architect: Ken Yeang), and Changi International Airport Terminal 2 Renovation (Architect: RSP). Presently,

LPA is also in the construction supervision phase of some international projects such as, The National Grand

Theatre of China (Architect: Paul Andreu) and China Central Television (Architect: OMA), and realizing the

importance, but difficulty of this stage.

■Urban Lighting Master Plan for Singapore

In June of 2004 the Singapore Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) held an Urban Lighting Design Competition

for the following main areas: Orchard, Marina Bay, Bugis, Singapore River, and CBD. LPA was appointed to the

position. After conducted surveys of the lighting environment, we are currently in the design development phase,

creating a distinctive 21st Century nightscape for the City of Singapore. We are anticipating opportunities to develop

an individual lighting plan for each area and establish new lighting guidelines for urban planning.

■LPA Honored with ‘2004 Japan Design Award for Light and Lighting’

LPA was chosen to receive the ‘2004 Japan Design Award for Light and Lighting’ by The Illuminating Engineering

Institute of Japan (IEJI) for ‘The Nagasaki National Peace Memorial for the Atomic Bomb Victims.’ LPA joined

architect, Akira Kuriyu, builders, and lighting manufactures at the awards ceremony. One impressive aspect of this

project are the 70,000 points of optical fiber light floating in a pool of water, a new source of light that sway with the

breeze and ripples on the water. LPA has been honored in the past with many international design awards, but it is

exceptional for this project to be recognized by the IEJI.

■Transnational Tanteidan Forum in Hamburg, Germany

The first Transnational Tanteidan Forum was held in Tokyo in December of 2002. It moved to Stockholm in the fall

of the following year and, last year Hamburg, Germany hosted the third annual forum. Each member presented

different lighting conditions representative of their home country on this year’s theme: ‘Daily Transportation Facilities.’

Check out the Transnational Lighting Detectives home page at (www. tanteidan.org) and the Japan Lighting

Detectives home page at (www.shomei-tanteidan.org).

■‘2050 TOKYO NIGHTSCAPE’ Exhibit

From October 13th to November 8th, ‘2050 TOKYO NIGHTSCAPE’ was shown at the Design Gallery in Matsuya

Ginza, Tokyo. Guests were able to view interviews from ‘100 prophets’ and light models, based on concepts of

what the city, street, and home might be like in 2050. The Lighting Detectives feel it is not only important to survey

present conditions, but also discuss the future of lighting possibilities.

■‘Transnational Lighting Detectives’ Hot Off the Press.

Kajima Publishing published ‘Transnational Lighting Detectives’, an A5-size, full color, 210 page, Japanese / English

book, earlier in 2004. This book starts by reviewing the nightscapes of nineteen representative cities from around

the world; the second chapter introduces presentations made on residential lighting by Lighting Detective Members;

the third chapter is devoted to the Lighting Detectives and their many activities. The Lighting Detectives, initially

formed in 1990, developed into the Transnational Lighting Detectives in 2000. What will the year 2010 bring?

■Mende Lectures and Workshops

Mende was invited by the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) to present ‘Kaoru Mende on Design’

at the LIGHTFAIR International 2004 in Las Vegas. After a tiring, six-hour lecture in English, questions from an

eager audience and questionnaire feedback revealed a huge response. Mende felt the raising interest in lighting

design, through lectures presented in Seoul and Hamburg and workshops at The Japan Institute of Architects, The

Architectural Institute of Japan, Meguro Museum of Art, Tokyo, and Sendai Mediatheque.

"Daily Transportation Facilities"

It was the beginnings of autumn in the beautiful port city of Hamburg, where the 3rd annual

Transnational Tanteidan Forum was held. The dome-shaped hall, Freie Akademie der Kunste,

location near Central Station, was illuminated by soft light creating a pleasant atmosphere for all

present. Hamburg, with easy access from Scandinavia, made it possible for participants from

Copenhagen to also attend. The forum, started 3 years ago, was again, well attended with about

150 persons registered. Last year was also a little different with a pianist performing in between

sessions. The theme last year was “Daily Transportation Facilities”, meaning public transportation

used everyday to get to and from school and work. The core members from six different countries

reported on what kind of public transportation was used in their area and the lighting environment

of these facilities.

TOKYO NIGHTSCAPE 2050 〜21 世 紀 の 東 京 夜 景 〜

The place is Tokyo. The year is 2050. The topic is light. One hundred and nineteen professionals from various fields,

architects, designers, photographers, critics, were brought together to discuss and predict the future of light in Tokyo.

Will the future grow darker? Or will it become brighter? The psychological state of the people and society were also

critical factors in these predictions, which have taken the form of words, models, and video, in the "Tokyo Night Scape

2050"exhibit.

City Walking Tours

On the City Walking Tours held throughout 2004, we encountered light attracting people’s eyes

at henewly opened, LaQua in the Tokyo Dome City, and observed light in the new spaces of

Yokohama`s Minato-Mirai Subway Line. On the walking tour held in the intense heat of July, we

rode a waterbus, departing from Hinode Pier, upriver to Asakusa. On the boat, we surveyed the

contrasting scenery along the riverside. For the final tour of 2004, we took to the night air in

helicopters over the vast city of Tokyo. Regardless of the name, walking tours, we surveyed on

the water, in the sky, and encountered a variety of scenery, contrary to our everyday lives.
