Every restaurant on this list is here for a reason. The locaon may be scenic or historic, the food may be off the charts, or just real darn good.
Now, More Than Ever
Chili Sauce. There is a specific chili
sauce that I love from an Ontario farm
located close to Lake Huron. I have jars
in my fridge and pantry all year long.
And then, early 2020 happened. My
husband and I adhered to the stay at
home notices and during that time I
fretted that he was using too much of
my beloved chili sauce. Shopping trips
were limited to my local grocery store,
where selection of many food products
was limited, or non-existent and chili
sauce was limited to a product no longer
produced in Canada. It was stunning
to see empty shelves in a Canadian
grocery store.
From this event two very important
ideas become crystal clear:
1) supporting our locally produced
food supply is not just a thoughtful
thing to do, or a special treat for
us, it is critical to our success as
a province and as a country. Give
away our food supply and we
are forever dependant on other
countries. A country the size of
Canada should be able to provide
a substantial amount of our own
food requirements.
2) I hesitate to pay $3.00 for jam
in a national grocery chain, but I
willingly shell out $6.00 for a local
farm produce jam. Why? Because
they taste better, and I understand
the ingredients on the label.
I realize not everyone can
afford that, but the foundation
of economics comes into play
here—supply and demand.
The more people want it,
the more produced, and the
lower the overall price. More
importantly, we secure our
food supply.
From this point forward, I
pledge to support Canadian
farmers to the best of my
ability, purposely sourcing
and promoting locally grown
fruit, vegetables, meat and
dairy, as well as products like
jams, preserves, and I will
support butchers, wineries and craft
beer producers and other producers of
food in Ontario.
In addition, I will frequent small
independent restaurants that promote
