Born in i Chicago, John was deeply impressed by a summer vacation
that he spent visiting the highways and byways of Ontario as a boy. “I
have never forgotten the exciting experience I had seeing the
beautiful rural landscape and meeting so many friendly people”, says
John. “I returned home with a wider horizon and an enthusiasm to
paint new subjects.” After graduating from college, John began to
free-lance, acquiring commissions to paint illustrations for magazines and books. He and his wife Mary Anne
later fulfilled their dream of owning a place in the country. “I began to paint my favorite subjects of
old-fashioned country landscapes,” says John. For more than thirty years John has painted a popular series of
art calendars. John Sloane’s Country Seasons Deluxe Wall Calendars, Mini calendars and Weekly Planners
celebrate the beauty of the four seasons and the simple pleasures of country living. He also continues to
produce many popular greeting cards, jig-saw puzzles and quilting fabric collections. John Sloane’s
Country Seasons calendars are available at stores and online. To see more of John’s artwork or information
A Very Special Cookbook
Over fifty years ago, my co-workers got
together to give me a wedding shower. All
these years later, I would be at a loss to
tell you the presents I received, except for
one—a 1956 edition of “The American
Woman’s Cookbook.” How I
cherished that huge 856 page
hard cover book. Since I always
enjoyed cooking and baking
from a very young age, I found
this to be a regular department
store of recipes all in one book,
complete with many mouthwatering
illustrations, and it
became my go-to book for
most meals served in our home.
There were recipes for everything
you could imagine, including breads and
rolls, soups, main courses with or without
meat, plus fish, seafood, vegetable dishes,
salads, and casseroles. Then, two smaller
sections; one for egg recipes, and the
other for cheese. There were also desserts
to satisfy all the ones with a sweet tooth:
cakes, pies, puddings, cookies and frozen
desserts, plus many recipes on candymaking.
You were also taught everything
you needed to know about canning,
preserving, and jelly making, plus pickles
and relishes. If you were in the mood for
French dishes, there they were, all grouped
together. Then, in case you needed help to
make good coffee, the instructions were
there also, along with many other hot and
cold beverages. A portion of the book was
devoted to menus for breakfast, lunch,
dinner, and school box lunches. Complete
menus and recipes could be found for
all special occasions including weddings,
men’s card parties and bridge suppers. I
found it really interesting that no recipes
in this book called for a can of anything,
By Jeanette Paddon,
St. Thomas
as all recipes were made from scratch.
Many sections of the book made
for interesting reading, such as how
to entertain without a maid, which is
something we could not have afforded, or
even had a desire for; and the many
ways to set a table for different
occasions, fully illustrated. I
chuckled over a wedding cake
recipe which took two pounds
of butter and twenty eggs. This
resulted in twenty-four pounds of
cake, which surely would satisfy
many guests! I must also mention the
section on how to prepare and cook
wild game such as roasted rabbit, squirrel,
opossum, and how to make a pigeon pie.
Instructions were there also, on how to
kill a fresh lobster or crab before cooking
them. This was not for the faint-hearted! I
was never interested in trying out any of
these recipes.
I acquired many other cookbooks over
the years, several of which never really
kept my interest for long. However, The
American Woman’s Cookbook was a
“keeper.” This certainly was the ideal book
for anyone who had never attempted
cooking anything, for fear of failing. Each
recipe is explained in detail, so if you
could read, you could certainly become a
good cook.
As I sit here turning pages, memories
return of so many meals served in our
home while using this old standby. It
has worn well, though the binding is in
need of repair, and some of the pages are
soiled with food. Someday, this book will
be passed down to one of my daughters.
Both are excellent cooks, but they could
possibly find something here that would
tease their palate.
