Cartwright resigns as
board chief – again
• By Bea Gooding
AFTER NEARLY three years of
leading the Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board,
chairman David Cartwright is
calling it quits.
In a resignation letter
addressed to board members,
Cartwright said he intends to
step down from the role effective
March 14.
The letter will be presented
at the next meeting on March
15, allowing time to prepare a
report for the election of a new
chairperson.
Cartwright said the move was
planned to give other members
an opportunity to lead while
bringing their own experiences
and skills to the table.
“Part of the responsibility of
chairperson is about succession
planning that allows other
members to lead the board by
doing the first half of the term,”
he said.
Cartwright will remain as a
board member while supporting
the new chairperson leading to
the next elections in 2022.
It was not the first time he
stepped down. In 2018, Sam
MacDonald became chairman
for the same reason.
Cartwright stepped back into
the role in 2019 for just over
a year while newer members
settled in.
“I used this opportunity
to help others for a while and
help them get up to speed,” he
said.
“Some other people are new, so
to throw someone new in such

THE CITY council is scouting
for new uses for the high
performance sports centre at Jellie
Park.
The centre – the Apollo Project
Centre – was built after the
earthquakes to provide a temporary
home for High Performance
Sport New Zealand because it had
lost the use of the sports facilities
at Queen Elizabeth II Park.
HPSNZ has been using the
centre since May 2013, but it will
move into the new Metro Sports
Facility in the
central city when
it opens in 2022.
With no longterm
need for the
Apollo Project
Centre, HPSNZ
is looking to gift
David Bailey
the building onto
the city council
or to a suitable community recreation
group when it moves out.
The building, which is located
next to the Jellie Park Recreation
and Sport Centre, has a full-sized
netball court, a strength and
conditioning gym, a 40m running
straight, and showers, as well as
offices and meeting spaces.
“It’s a facility that still has a

city council recreation and sports
services manager David Bailey.
“When HPSNZ moves out,
there is an opportunity for it to
be taken over by one of the city’s
sporting or community recreation
groups.
“The building lends itself to
all sorts of activities – we’re
open to considering any proposed
use of the building that is in
keeping with the surrounding
sport and recreation facilities
and that helps to get more people
more active, more often,’’ Bailey
said.
“If you have an idea for how
the building could be used, and
you are willing and able to take
on the total responsibility for
managing and operating the
building including all costs, then
please respond to our request for
proposals.
“If, as a result of that process,
we identify a suitable potential
new use for the building, we will
then consult with the community
to ascertain their views on the
building remaining in place.
Following consideration of these
views if the community board is

said.

Roading discussion sessions postponed
A DROP-IN session for the
Wheels to Wings – Papanui
ki Waiwhetū cycleway has
been postponed because of the
Covid-19 alert level change.
The event was scheduled to take
place at the Ōrauwhata: Bishopdale
Community Centre today.
“We are going to re-schedule
the drop-in session and extend
the consultation period on the
cycleway design plans because we
want people to have the opportunity
to discuss any concerns
they might have with city council
staff so that they can then put in
an informed submission,’’ city
council engagement manager
Katy McRae said.
“As soon as we have confirmed
a new date for the drop-in session,
we will put the details on
have your say. We are hoping
it will be able to go ahead next
week.’’
A drop-in session about Way
Better Roads – the work the city
council is doing in five suburban
areas of Christchurch to make it
safer and easier to get around –
has also been postponed.
The drop-in session was
scheduled to take place at
Delta Trust Community House
today.
Readers respond to
the proposed Wings to
Wheels cycleway
I totally disagree with
what the council are planning
to do with Harewood
for another “white elephant”
cycleway.
We would be taking a real
backward step by decreasing
the four-lane road to two
lanes. So many of Christchurch’s
roads have been destroyed
with these obtrusive
cycleways.
At a meeting in Bishopdale,
a councillor was asked
how many cyclists use Harewood
Rd. And they hadn’t
even done a survey for this
figure. How can you carry
out such a destroying plan
when no research had been
done?
I don’t count many cycles
on any of the kerbed cycleways.
And I don’t count
many children biking to
school. So why destroy
another road such as Harewood
Rd?
I used to bike to work 20
years ago using Harewood
Rd to get into town. Always
felt completely safe as the
road was quite wide anyway.
The council believe we
are all going to change and
start biking and busing,
but they’re dreaming, there
are more and more cars
and I don’t believe this will
change.
Biking is too convenient.
I am not going to bike to
go shopping in town. If you
want to buy any products,
how are you going to get
them back home? On a small
basket on your bike?

Work on Cancer Society’s new
patient facility to start in May
CONSTRUCTION of a new
building to house the Cancer
Society’s Christchurch-based
patient accommodation and
support services in Papanui is set
to start in May.
The charity’s old facilities were

Cancer Society
Canterbury-West

chief executive

said the
charity was thrilled to receive
Elizabeth

confirmation that it was successful
in securing $6.5 million from
the Government’s shovel-ready
fund.
“This funding from the Government
means that we can, at
last, proceed with confidence on
our long-awaited rebuild on our
new site at 74 Langdons Rd in
Papanui,” Chesterman said.
“Over the past 10 years we
have had to react quickly and
frequently relocate our operations
to ensure we could keep

with cancer from around our
region rely on.”
The accommodation facilities
provide a home away from home
for people around the South Island,
and even as far afield as the
Chatham Islands who come to
Christchurch Hospital for cancer
treatment.
Said Chesterman: “We are excited
that our new 50-bedroom
patient accommodation facility
will offer our guests easy access
to a wide range of amenities
including shops, cafes, restaurants,
cinemas, a library and the
nearby Graham Condon Recreation
and Sport Centre, including

division would extend its existing
shuttle service to transport
those staying in its accommodation
facilities to their hospital
appointments and back again.
“We know from experience
how challenging cancer treatment
can be and we believe those
staying with us will value being
able to have their treatment and
then enjoy some rest and recreation
in modern, welcoming
facilities away from the hospital
environment,” Chesterman said.
“Our new site will include ample
parking to enable Christchurch
locals to easily access faceto-face
emotional, practical and
financial support, our resource
library and our cancer-related
groups and programmes,” Chesterman
said.
The anticipated completion
date for the new complex is early
2023 and the projected total cost
is more than $20 million. The
charity will be embarking on a
fundraising campaign to ensure
the surrounding landscaping
and interior of the complex provides
the most comfortable and

LOGICAL REWARD: A Papanui High School team comprising Josh Rae,
Chloe Morrison-Clarke, Indie Lewis and Shelby Allen has won the Australian
Ethics Olympiad, held via Zoom meetings last week.
Papanui HS students
win ethics olympiad
PAPANUI HIGH School has won gold at
the Australasian Ethics Olympiad, with
a quartet of year 10 students showcasing
superior logic against more than 250 rival
institutions.
Shelby Allen, Indie Lewis, Chloe
Morrison-Clarke and Josh Rae either
presented compelling arguments or
effectively questioned opposing teams
on eight topics including the ethics of
enforced quarantine for Covid-19 and the
repatriation of fighters from international
terrorism networks.
Judging panels featuring ethicists and
philosophers from around the world
weighed up the participants’ perceptive
thinking when confronted with moral
dilemmas.
Papanui High progressed from a series
of round-robin debates to a 24-team finals
series last week, comprising teams from
New Zealand and each Australian state
and territory.
In the final tally of judges scores
Papanui High finished clear of closest
challenger Iona College from Perth,
Western Australia.
“It’s a useful way for students to build
ethical decision-making muscle and
hone an ability to respectfully discuss
deeply contentious questions facing an
increasingly complex and divided world,”
said team coach Jo Dwan.
“There’s a real emphasis on promoting
respectful dialogue around ethical issues,”
Dwan said.
It is the third year Papanui High has
entered the olympiad, and success was particularly
sweet for Australian-born Dwan.
“We beat every private school in
Australia, it was very enjoyable,” the
English teacher said.
The ethics olympiad was inspired by
the United States’ Ethics Bowl, an intercollegiate
tournament that started more
than 30 years ago.

CASHMERE HIGH School
students had the opportunity to
get up close and personal with the
Women’s World Cup cricket trophy
last week.
They were able to capture the
moment through selfies and the

Cricket also provided fun activities,
such as the dive mat, to allow
students and staff to showcase
their cricketing prowess.
Deputy principal Blair Johnson
took a “particularly fine diving
catch.”
Said head of cricket Paul Weggery:
“The central principle of
cricket is the love of playing the
game. This allows you to be relaxed
while taking the opportunities
given to you in order to attain
excellence.
“We saw this in Devon Conway’s
epic 99 against Australia,’’
he said.
“Every time we play, we enjoy
the opportunity,” which was
evident in the school’s recent
championship performance in
the T20 Gillette Cup Qualifier.
Next up for the school is the
girl’s competition with the theme
being “Fun with Cricket.”
The first XI also have their next

PUPILS FROM Marshland
School got a adrenalin-pumped
start to the new school year last
week when they went on a four
day camp to the YMCA Wainui
Park Camp near Akaroa.
Kayaking, abseiling, high
ropes, low ropes, archery and
raft building were just some
of the activities, with pupils
choosing their own level of
difficulty.
Teacher Carolyn Davies said
the pupils often found they were
stronger or braver than they
thought. She said the camp was
a fantastic way for pupils to
learn and grow outside of the
learning hubs. The activities
helped them to push boundaries,
gain confidence and work
together as a team to achieve a
common goal.
Davies said the activities and
skills learnt will be foundations
for the year ahead.

HOME & HEATING
Are you struggling
with the heat of
Summer or wanting
to get organised for
Winter?
Zone Control for your
Ducted heat pump.
Ducted heat pumps are a highly efficient
way to heat (or cool) your home. The
air from the heat pump is ducted to
several rooms or zones in your house.
Using a zone control system makes your
ducted heat pump even more efficient, by
specifying the amount of heat required
in each area, so not wasting energy to
overheat or overcool any room.
The AirTouch4 zone control system
from Smooth-Air takes ducted heat pump
air zoning to a whole new level of comfort
and energy efficiency.
AirTouch4 - The Ultimate Zone
Control
Have total control of your comfort zone:
AirTouch4 lets everyone enjoy a different
level of conditioned air in the room they
are in.
Save money on the power bill, without
compromising on comfort, by only
running the heating or cooling where
you need it with Smart Zoning. Plus with
runtime tracking, energy and airflow
management technology, you can enjoy
greater efficiency and savings from your
family’s ducted heat pump.
The AirTouch4 can also connect to
Google Home and Amazon Alexa.
Not every home is designed equal. Not
60
every room is either.
%
Temperatures can
often fluctuate from one room to the next
because of sunlight, room activity or other
factors.
With AirTouch4’s Individual
Temperature Control Technology (ITC),
the AirTouch monitors temperatures
and smartly adjusts airflow as needed
around your home with the aid of multiple
wireless temperature sensors instead of a
single sensor in one location. When some
rooms get too hot or cold, the AirTouch
will adjust airflow to maintain your desired
temperature, without wasting conditioned
air on rooms already comfortable.
Contact Smooth-Air on 0800
SMOOTH or sales@smooth-air.co.nz
for more information on the AirTouch4
zone control.
With the ever changing weather patterns,
heat pumps have the flexibility of being able
to heat and cool which is an advantage no
other appliance can offer. This represents
great value for your investment as you can
use it all year round. The team at Enviro
Master Ltd can help keep you cool this
Summer either at home or work. Enviro
Master supplies, installs and services all the
leading brands including Panasonic, Fujitsu,
Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means our team
can show you which system and brand will
best suit your needs.
With new regulations coming in for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals, now
is a great time to beat the 1st of July deadline.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can lead
to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well
experienced with the Tenancy Services
software to ensure that you are meeting your
requirements.
It is important to remember, when
selecting an installer, the manufacturer’s
warranty does not cover the installation
and consumers could be responsible for any
repair or damage caused to the system due
to poor installation. Enviro Master’s ensures
correct installation, and a demonstration so
customers have an understanding on how it
will best meet their needs.
For a free in home consultation, call
Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our
showroom at 41A Shakespeare Rd,
