District to benefit from
Fonterra payout boost
• By Susan Sandys
AN INCREASED dairy
payout will inject $170 million
into the Selwyn economy.
Fonterra Co-operative
Group Ltd on Friday lifted
its 2020/21 forecast farm gate
milk range to $7.30-$7.90 per
kg of milk solids, up from
$6.90-$7.50 per kgMS the previous
month. The midpoint of
the range, which farmers are
paid off, has increased to $7.60
per kgMS. This compares to
last year’s payout of about
$7.20.
Dairy NZ estimates the
higher payout will increase local
spend in the district by one
third – from the annual average
of $564 million to $734
million. There are 229 dairy
farms in Selwyn, providing
2510 jobs, paying about $200
million in wages.
The news comes hot on the
heels of a quarterly Selwyn
Business Survey organised
by the district council, which
shows businesses are overwhelmingly
more positive
about their outlook for the
next six months than they
were six months prior.
Police nab
40 motorists
for failing
to stop at
intersection
• By Susan Sandys
POLICE TICKETED 40 motorists
in 45 minutes for failing to stop at
the corner of Shands and Selwyn
Rds between 9am and 10am on
Monday.
Senior Sergeant Dean Harker
said it was mainly locals, from the
surrounding area encompassing
Rolleston to Prebbleton and beyond,
who were rolling through the stop
sign at the intersection.
“Staff just couldn’t keep up with
the cars that were doing it,” Harker
said.
“A lot of people just treat it as a
give way; a high percentage of our
crashes are at our stop signs.”
The motorists, rolling through
the intersection as they turned left,
were issued with a $150 fine and 20
demerit points.
Harker said police were focusing
on intersection behaviour as a high
number of the district’s crashes occurred
at intersections.
“It’s a pattern of driver behaviour
that needs to be changed. We are
just continually going to crashes at
these intersections where people
aren’t stopping.”
Intersection crashes make up
more than 40 per cent of all road
crashes in the district. The majority
involve two or more vehicles and
occur on rural roads.

THERE ARE 150 reasons
why you should stop at the
district’s intersections.
Because that will be what
it costs you if the long arm of
the law is about (see page 1).
Police launched a sting
operation on Monday,
catching 40 motorists in 45
minutes for failing to stop at
the corner of Shands
and Selwyn Rds between
9-10am.
Most of the transgressors
were locals who couldn’t
seem to distinguish between
a give way sign and a stop
sign.
But I guess the $150
fine will make them get it
right next time.
On the money front, great
news for farmers on page
1 today with the Fonterra
payout.
Let’s hope they spend
locally so many more share
in the spoils, and the Selwyn
economy keeps turning.
SELWYN MP Nicola Grigg is
surveying women in the district
to see how they have been
impacted by Covid-19.
The survey will go into 25,000
residential letterboxes from
this week which coincided with
International Women’s Day on
Monday.
Said Grigg: “We know
that women have been
disproportionately impacted
by the Covid-19 pandemic
in terms of job losses, but
what we don’t seem to have a
full understanding of is the
overarching psycho-social
impact the lockdown and
enduring stress has had on our
wahine.”
Grigg is National’s spokesperson
for women,
“As so many women experienced
during the lockdown,
they suddenly became the cook,
cleaner, carer, home-schooler,
and general-provider all while
often trying to juggle their own
business or work commitments
or, worse, dealing with the stress
of sudden unemployment.
“I know in my electorate alone,
social services are reporting a
spike in demand due to relationship
breakdowns and marriage
separations.
“And most concerningly
schools and police have reported
to me a noticeable rise in family
harm incidents.
“There has been a disappointing
lack of leadership on the
issue of women’s well-being from
the Government so I am mailing
out hard copies of a voluntary
survey to 25,000 residential addresses
across Selwyn.
“It is only by gathering data
that we can begin to understand
the issues and, therefore, possible
solutions”
The survey includes
questions such as:
• What level of stress do
you have in your personal
life?
• What level of support do
you feel in your workplace?
• Do you have access
to counselling or other
support?
Grigg will present the
findings to the public, NGOs,
the Ministry for Women and
the Government when they are
collated later in the year.
Feedback for new Rolleston School being collated
THE NEW Rolleston high
school campus site will
likely be within the current
Lemonwood Grove School and
the planned Te Rōhutu Whio
school.
Ministry of Education principal
consultant Dr Gabrielle
Wall at D & G Consulting said
115 people attended three public
meetings held last week to
consult on the new school – two
at Rolleston and one at West
Melton.
Those attending had not been
asked which of the two options
for a new campus site they
prefer. The options are a new
campus for Rolleston College or
a whole new school.
“There was a lot of questions
people weren’t asked to express
For the option of a new
Wednesday March 10 2021 Selwyn Times
Bobcat driver injured
• By Susan Sandys
A 27-YEAR-OLD bobcat
operator was crushed when an
implement the machine was
lifting swung and smashed
through the window of the
vehicle.
Hororata Volunteer Fire Brigade
members responded to the
incident at a Lake Coleridge residence
about 10.30am on Friday.
Brigade chief Bruce Sayer said
by the time firefighters arrived,
other workers nearby had been
able to climb into the cab and
operate the controls to move the
implement off.
“He was just sitting in the cab
in pain,” Sayer said.
The patient had crush injuries
to his left limbs, mainly his left
knee.
One of the nearby workers had
phoned 111 to alert emergency
services, and by the time the
brigade arrived, the Westpac
rescue helicopter was also on
the scene. Hororata firefighters
were assisted by firefighters from
Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade.
A St John spokesperson
said the man was airlifted to
Christchurch Hospital with serious
injuries.
A second callout for the
Hororata brigade on Friday was
to a large fire which resulted in
the destruction of a farm truck,
hay barn and about 45 large hay
bales near Hororata.
Sayer said at about 3pm the
brigade was alerted to the fire,
which had started when hay on
the back of the truck travelling
on a farm was ignited by the
engine’s exhaust.
The driver did not notice until
the truck was driven into the hay
barn. The fire engulfed the barn.
Hororata firefighters were
assisted by teams from Coalgate,
Dunsandel and rural units.
Meanwhile, two sheds and
several vehicles including two
tractors were destroyed in a large
blaze on a Leeston dairy farm
in the early hours of Sunday
morning.
Fire investigator Gavin Lack
said the fire, on Selwyn Lake
Rd, was not suspicious, and
most likely originated in one of
the tractors. It could have been
either from some sort of fault in
the tractor, or from a build up of
debris in its engine compartment.
The last time the tractors had
been used was about 5.30pm the
previous day.
“They can hold a lot of residual
heat,” Lack said.
He reminded farmers to
regularly check for vegetation
build-up and birds’ nests in
their vehicles, as debris could
smoulder away out of sight before
igniting.
Leeston deputy chief and officer
in charge Matt Walker said
the fire in one storage shed and
one implement shed was fully involved
when the brigade arrived.
Four appliances and four tankers
were on the scene, with Southbridge,
Lincoln and Rolleston
backing up the Leeston brigade.
The farmer was trying to do the
best he could to control the blaze
when they arrived, using a dairy
shed hose.
There were other buildings
including the farm’s milking
shed nearby, however, firefighters
managed to control the blaze
and stopped it from spreading
further.
have been scrambling to fix
Akaroa’s water issues have vowed
that the town’s water will be back
on tap by Easter holidays.
Four dead animals – two
possums and two birds – were
found during a routine supply
check last month.
Testing confirmed there was
enough chlorine in the water to
kill bacteria, but there was still a
possible protozoa risk.
It meant the Canterbury medical
officer of health said to boil
water used for drinking and food
preparation. Residents in Akaroa
and Takamatua have had to boil
their drinking water since
February 12.
But the city council head of
three waters and waste Helen
Beaumont yesterday said she
hopes that the boil water notice
could be lifted by the middle of the
month. – NZ Herald
Leeston farmer Karl Dean, who
is chairman of the North Canterbury
Federated Farmers dairy
section, said it was good news to
hear of the new forecast.
“I was delighted to be honest,”
he said.
An extra 40c per kilo of milk
solids would represent about
$120,000 more in annual income
for an average Canterbury farm.
His farm of 400 cows was
below the Canterbury average,
but nevertheless the extra income
would mean he could reduce debt
and upgrade infrastructure, like
tracks and lane-ways. He was also
planning on a milking machinery
upgrade such as bringing in more
automation to the cow shed.
Dean said the increase would
not only give farmers the opportunity
to pay down debt as they
recovered from the difficult times
of the payout dropping to the $4
range five years ago, but also to
upgrade infrastructure on their
farms which would be good for
the local economy.
Selwyn Business Group
chairwoman Kathryn Peat said
Selwyn’s rural backbone of agriculture
was a big part of why the
district’s economy was relatively
strong. The increased payout
forecast was coming at a good
time for local businesses.
Peat had once been a dairy
farmer herself. From experience,
any lift in income gave the opportunity
to buy more machinery
or plant. Most farmers spent that
locally.
Hurrell said China’s strong
economic recovery, following the
initial impact of Covid-19, was
flowing through to strong demand
for dairy.
Hurrell said the lift was good
news for farmers and the well
being of rural communities. It
would see the co-op contribute
more than $11.5 billion to
the New Zealand economy
through milk price payments this
year.
The Selwyn Business Survey
canvassed 120 businesses, across
a wide range of industries from
agriculture and construction to
hospitality and retail.
It found a net 28 per cent were
expecting their sales to increase
in the next six months. A net
nine per cent expected to hire
new staff. Selwyn businesses were
slightly more confident in their
sales outlook than businesses
nationally.
The preliminary February
2021 result from ANZ’s Business
Outlook showed a net 22 per
cent of businesses expected their
trading activity to increase in the
year ahead.
The Selwyn Business Survey
results showed businesses were
more confident than they had
been during the first survey
taken in September 2020, when
a net six per cent of businesses
expected a decline in sales. A net
two per cent expected a reduction
in staff.
The survey results are
summarised in net terms
by taking the percentage of
businesses reporting an increase
in the indicator in question,
minus the percentage reporting a
decrease.
CANTERBURY Polythene
Pipe Ltd owner operator
Ian Watson in Rolleston is
among Selwyn operators
who have growing
confidence in the success of
their business.
The quarterly Selwyn
Business Survey organised
by the district council
shows businesses are
overwhelmingly more
positive about their outlook
for the next six months than
they were six months prior.
“It’s improving with extra
people coming in, it’s the
growing population,” Watson
said.
While the Covid-19
pandemic had made him
more cautious when it came
to recruiting staff, even in
alert level two last week,
he felt confident about the
future. This was particularly
the case leading into the
South Island Agricultural
Field Days, still set to go
ahead on March 24 to 26.
Canterbury Polythene Pipe
Ltd supplies landscapers and
irrigation system installers
and other companies,
making polythene pipe for
home gardens, orchards,
vineyards and farms.
While Watson had been
cautious about taking on
an employee to help him
as a sole operator in the
manufacturing plant, if
business continued on the
same track he was hopeful
of taking on one permanent
full-timer next year.
Beauty @ Lincoln owner
operator Sonia Gulati said
client numbers at the salon
reflected the patterns
suggested in the survey.
Business owners’ confidence growing
RELIEF: Salon operator Sonia Gulati is looking forward to
an increase in business following alert level two.
PHOTO: SUSAN SANDYS
She was starting to get
busy again, improving
after several tough months
following the start of the
pandemic.
But then things became
quiet again following
last week’s alert level
announcement.
“Because they (clients)
have that fear in their
mind, they think people
from Auckland have been
travelling to everywhere in
the South Island,” Gulati said.
Some of her clients were
elderly, others were carers
of vulnerable people, and
they did not want to run the
risk of being exposed to the
virus.
And even in the case
of the alert level change
lasting just one week, it
would still take some time
for customers to build their
confidence again. She said
the salon had always been
a bustling enterprise in her
seven years there, and the
pandemic had been the first
time things went quiet.
“It is such a burden on the
business, but I don’t want to
quit,” Gulati said.
Selwyn Business Group
chairwoman Kathryn Peat
welcomed the results
of the business survey,
adding it was fantastic to
see confidence among
businesses.
However, she said it would
be interesting to see what
the result would be now
following the alert level
change earlier this month.
“It think the confidence
levels do shift a little bit
when we get a change in
alert levels,” Peat said.
CALL FOR TEMPORARY
PAUA FISHING BAN
The Minister of Fisheries is being
asked to approve an open-ended,
but temporary, prohibition on
recreational and commercial fishing
of pāua from reefs adjacent
to Ōnuku Marae in Akaroa. The
Akaroa Taiāpure Management
Committee is recommending
closure to prohibit the taking of
pāua from the Ōnuku area by recreational
and commercial fishers.
Said Ōnuku Rūnanga chairman
Rik Tainui: “The pāua and other
kaimoana on the reefs next to
Ōnuku Marae were once abundant
and were a significant resource
for people who were fishing for a
feed and to sustain the functions
of the marae. We know from local
knowledge that the fish stocks are
nowhere near as plentiful and
accessible as they once were.”
Hearing expert
in the Hornby
community
Audiology professional Claire Stacey
introduces hearing care to Hornby
ADVERTORIAL
Local qualified Specsavers audiologist
Claire Stacey is delighted to announce
the introduction of a new audiology
service in-store. Specsavers Audiology
Hornby is open to help with any
hearing concerns and to protect and
support locals’ hearing health, through
expert advice and caring service.
According to research, approximately
125,000 people in the Canterbury
region suffer from hearing loss, and it
can take 7-10 years for them to act on
it. Claire is on a mission to get more
people hearing better and provide
the community with a supportive
care-driven hearing service for
years to come.
“I became an Audiologist to help
improve people’s lives by helping them
to better communicate and interact
with the world around them. Hearing
loss can have a significant impact on
someone’s life causing loneliness, selfisolation
and dependence,” Claire says.
“I’m really excited to be a part of
the Christchurch community and
I encourage all locals who might have
concerns about their hearing to come
in for a free 15-minute hearing check
or even just a chat.”
I THINK I MAY BE HARD OF
HEARING – WHAT’S NEXT?
“Our research found that two in three
New Zealanders 40 years and older
say there has been a time when they
thought someone they know couldn’t
hear them very well. Yet only four in
ten New Zealanders 40 years and older
say they have suggested a hearing test
to someone that they thought may
be hard of hearing.
Often someone close to the person
will notice before they do that they
can’t hear so well, so it’s really
important to look out for signs such
as turning the TV up loud, putting
their mobile on speaker phone,
lip reading and asking people to
repeat themselves,” Claire says.
Claire encourages anyone from
the community who thinks they
YOU WILL RECEIVE ONGOING SUPPORT
At your fitting appointment, we will show you everything you need to
know about your new hearing aids and answer any questions you or your
family may have. Once fitted, a follow-up appointment will be booked
within four weeks to check that you are completely happy with your
purchase and make any necessary adjustments to your hearing aids.
We also recommend an annual check-up where we reassess your hearing
and make any necessary adjustments to your hearing aids. At Specsavers,
your 12 months aftercare support is at no cost to you.
may be hard of hearing to come in
store for a free 15-minute hearing
check. If further testing is required,
a comprehensive, 60 minute, hearing
assessment is then undertaken at
a cost of $59.
During this appointment, Claire
will carry out a comprehensive
diagnostic assessment and will be
able to determine if hearing aids
would be beneficial.
I NEED HEARING AIDS – WHAT
ARE MY OPTIONS?
“If we find you would benefit from
hearing aids, we’ll make sure you have
all the information you need to make
an informed choice. We will never
recommend hearing aids if you don’t
need them or suggest spending more
money than you have to. Prices for our
full range of latest technology hearing
devices are clearly available online or
you will pay. Our hearing assessments
THE HUMMING of honeybees
has provided a backdrop to
the sound of the TranzAlpine
entering Springfield station, but
now the bees have gone.
Glynn Cleaver of Kirwee Bees
was called in, and putting his
ear to the walls in a room full of
electrical gear, he determined
there were two hives with up to
60,000 bees.
Builders removed wall panels
under the watchful eye of a
KiwiRail electrical inspector.
“The pressure was on to make
the kitchen functional before the
biggest event of the year for the
hall, the Courtenay A&P Show.
In the end, the kitchen was made
usable for the show, with hours
to spare,” Galloway said.
The committee received grants
of $6000 each from the Lion
Foundation and the Four Winds
Foundation, and along with
the bees had been coming and
going through tiny holes in the
“The rescued bees are infested
New health, learning and recreation spaces for Selwyn residents are getting closer to opening, as
Four major projects in Rolleston are due to open to the public this year, bringing new services
to Selwyn including a library, community space, extended swimming pool, indoor sports and
health services.
Mayor Sam Broughton says it’s exciting to see the projects come to fruition after years of planning
and hard work.
“We’ve been through a period of providing new buildings and bringing new services across
Selwyn in response to the growth that we have had in the district. It’s great to be stepping into the
next chapter in that long standing plan offering new opportunities for everyone in Selwyn.”
The Selwyn Sports Centre at Foster Park will be the first project to open in May, with eight indoor
courts, a walking track, areas for fitness classes, and a community sports hub. In addition to sports,
the hard floor surface will be able to host community events such as markets or car shows.
The centre also features the country’s first digital playground – an interactive sports wall
combining sports and video games.
The Selwyn Health Hub fitout will begin at the same time, with tenants including the Canterbury
District Health Board and Pacific Radiology. The hub, next to St John ambulance in Rolleston
and close to the Southern Motorway, will house a birthing unit, radiology, general practice and
other community health services.
The Selwyn Aquatic Centre extension will see a new 10-lane pool open in the middle of the year,
with upgraded main pool, public areas and changing rooms due to be completed by October.
The final windows will be installed in the coming weeks at Te Ara Ātea, which will house the
district’s largest library. In addition to housing a much larger book collection, the building will
include a museum experience, versatile performance and meeting space, comfortable seating and
study areas, and a studio space and workshop.
District to come together
over dinner
A chance to eat your way around the globe and meet new friends is
coming to Selwyn this month.
Dinners of Selwyn invites people to share delicious international
food and Kiwi kai, celebrate Selwyn’s diversity and tell their stories
of coming to Selwyn.
The dinner will be held at Lincoln Event Centre’s Baylis Lounge on
Monday 22 March.
Newcomers who attended last year’s Dinners of Selwyn in October
came from near and far, some from the North Island and others from
places around the world, including Iran, Sri Lanka, China and England.
The event ran as an initiative under Immigration New Zealand’s
Welcoming Community accreditation, which was awarded to the
Council last year.
Ravi Gooneratne attended the event last year, bringing his Sri
Lankan fried rice, which featured among other international cuisines
including a Chinese cold dish of seaweed, ratatouille, Persian lentil
rice Adas Polow and a classic kiwi favourite, lemon meringue pie.
Ravi says last year’s event was very successful and well organised.
“It was an excellent occasion to meet others new to the
Selwyn community and also taste different ethnic foods from
different countries.”
Maggie Gibbons also attended Dinners of Selwyn with her partner
Mike and said she enjoyed meeting new people and getting a
feeling of belonging in the community.
“It was good just to connect with other people who were new, so
we didn’t feel like we were on our own.”
Maggie says she looks forward to reconnecting with residents she
met last year and sharing her experiences with other newcomers at
the upcoming Dinners of Selwyn.
Life-changing opportunity offered to young people
Help to attend the adventure of a lifetime is on offer for young people in Selwyn.
Mayors around the country can nominate young people aged 16–26 to attend Outward Bound courses,
sponsored by the Mayoral Forum for Jobs.
The courses are a chance to take part in something that will make a life-long difference, Mayor Sam
Broughton says.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to broaden your horizons, meet new people and try something that will
challenge your body and mind. You will have the opportunity to take part in something that will look
great on your CV and show employers you are willing to step outside your comfort zone.”
Scholarships worth $3600 are available for two courses. The Mind, Body and Soul course for people
aged 16–18, and the Classic course for people aged 18–26.
The 21-day courses use action-packed adventure with bush expeditions, water challenges, sea
voyages and height activities, along with times of reflection, to help people discover their inner
strengths and values and practical ways to apply those skills to everyday life.
Nominees will be required to fundraise $749 towards the course fee and arrange travel to and from
Outward Bound.
Applications can be made to the Council and the Mayor will nominate candidates to the forum and
Outward Bound, who will award the scholarships. Special consideration will be given for candidates
who have overcame hardship, or do good work in the community.
New slide installed at Foster Park
Foster Park playground has reopened with a new addition.
The playground reopened on Friday after its annual maintenance,
which this year included the installation of a new stainless steel
tube slide.
The New Zealand-made steel slide replaces the existing plastic tube
slide, which was closed for much of 2020 due to issues with cracking.
A shade sail has also been installed to shade the exit of the slide.
Selwyn residents have been making a big effort to recycle correctly over the past three months.
Just one truck of recycling has been rejected since the Council’s contamination crew began bin
inspections and guidance on improving recycling in December – compared to an average of six truck
loads a month in the preceding six months, Council Solid Waste Manager Andrew Boyd says.
“It’s been really good to see the way people have made the effort to help get it right and avoid sending
unnecessary waste to landfill. We know Selwyn residents care and it’s been pleasing to see how these
reminders and a bit of extra vigilance from people have helped. We hope people will keep up the habits
they’ve got into over the past few months.”
The Council provided households with updated bin stickers and magnetic easy recycling guides, and ran
newspaper and social media advertising to support good recycling, before the contamination crew began
its work, but it was noticeable how much things improved once the crew began its work, Andrew says.
“We’re really grateful to the crew, a small group of four who’ve pounded the streets in all weathers,
doing a job that was at times unpopular. They’ve made a real difference to help recycling get to the right
place and helping us all do it right.”
The crew added tags to bins with minor issues, advising people of the items in their recycling bin that
could not be recycled. The most common reasons people received advice tags was for soft plastics
(any plastic that can be crumpled in your hand), lids and Tetra Pak cartons such as common plant milk
and non-plastic juice containers.
In the worst cases, badly contaminated bins were not collected. From December to February a total
of 657 bins, fewer than 5% of those inspected, were rejected. These were mainly turned down for
unacceptable contamination from items such as food, clothing, nappies and sanitary pads, which
would have seen recycling loads contaminated and have to be sent to landfill.
Artwork celebrates life of Jean Batten
THE LIFE and times of Kiwi
legend Jean Batten has been
chronicled in a celebration
of the aviator’s extraordinary
accomplishments.
Painter Jonathan Marett
is exhibiting a collection of
his works capturing Batten’s
historical solo flights at the
Nut Point Centre in West
Melton from Saturday until
May 16.
The North Canterbury artist
is himself a retired airline
and Air Force pilot. He said
Batten’s accomplishments had
long been an inspiration.
“As a pilot, I’m in total awe
of what she achieved. It takes a
strong, skilled and determined
person to fly those long and
lonely flights in such rudimentary
aircraft,” Marett said.
• By Susan Sandys
CANAL-monitoring
equipment used by NIWA was
destroyed in a TrustPower shed
fire at Lake Coleridge.
A $350,000 bulldozer was
left unscathed by the fire which
saw the shed gutted on the
night of February 22.
A NIWA spokesperson said
the organisation operated
canal-monitoring equipment
“I tried to capture what Jean
would have seen and what
she might have felt as she
navigated some fairly rough
under contract to TrustPower.
The equipment was in the
building and was destroyed,
however, the equipment belonged
to TrustPower.
A TrustPower spokesperson
said the shed contained
workshop equipment and the
company expected to replace
the shed “in due course.”
“The cost of this is unknown
at present,” the spokesperson
said.
world’s most remarkable and
lonely landscapes.”
Batten was born in Rotorua
Fire and Emergency New
Zealand specialist fire investigator
Gavin Lack said the
cause of the fire was unknown,
however, it was not suspicious.
He said by the time the blaze
was notified and fire crews
were able to get to the location,
the fire was well under way.
The first responding brigade
was Hororata, which took
about 65min to get there due
to the shed’s remote location.
in 1909 and set many solo
flight world records, principally
en route between England,
Australia and New Zealand,
and from England to South
America.
The opening event for Life
and Times of Jean Batten in Art
will be at 4pm, and feature a
special address by another Kiwi
legend, Dame Fiona Kidman.
Dame Fiona’s novel An
Infinite Air influenced the
series of 15 art works. The
opening will also feature a
piano accompaniment of
Chopin’s Raindrop Prelude
which will be introduced by
Dr Fiona McAlpine.
While the Batten works are
for exhibition only, a selection
of other works by Marett will
be available to purchase.
Shed fire claims canal-monitoring gear
Coalgate and Methven appliances
also attended.
Lack said it was fortunate
that a large bulldozer, valued at
about $350,000, was outside at
the time.
However, other workshop
equipment were lost, and it was
good reminder for companies
and farmers which have
sheds containing equipment
in remote areas to have fire
detection systems.
Email Marketing – why is it so important?
Email marketing is still the NUMBER ONE way to
convert your leads into sales. Emails sit at the heart of
your digital marketing and will help you build long-term
relationships, drive sales, capture lead information and
position you as an expert. Regular, interesting emails
can be a game-changer yet most business owners
rarely, if ever, email their contacts. Email marketing is
the glue that links your digital marketing together. It
keeps existing customers loyal and coming back more
frequently and referring your business; converts leads
into paying customers.

SCHOOLS 15
All classes at Te Ahi Kaikōmako Rolleston School had ice skating
lessons on a visiting rink recently, courtesy of the school’s PTA.
”All our students have had a can-do attitude and have loved the
challenge of skating on thin sharp blades,” teacher Rhiân Bambry
said. The lessons followed a school picnic for the community.
“The weather was pleasant and not too hot. It was so lovely to see
so many of our hapori coming together to eat dinner under the
shade of the trees in our playground,” Bambry said.
Term 1 Update
Principal’s Message
2021 is the first year of a full school for
Horoeka Haemata Rolleston College
which is a very exciting milestone for us
all. Horoeka Haemata is the name gifted
to the school by Te Taumutu Rūnanga.
It means flourishing lancewood. The
lancewood is the college’s gifted tree. It
is poignant that this year our first group
of learners will leave the college after
their 5 year journey with us. Growing like the
lancewood from a seed to a flourishing tree.
We now have over 1300 learners enrolled at the college from Yr
9-13. Our year 9 intake is the largest the college has ever had. Our
NCEA Certification Results were again above the national and
decile 8-10 average and junior learning at the college continues to
be engaging and personalised.
Our year has started with a mix of learning experiences inside and
outside of the school. A series of camps and trips out in the good
weather have been a highlight at the start of the year as was the
annual whanau sports day for both learners and staff.
Our building modifications have assisted in providing for our
continued growth. Modifications will continue throughout this
year with some very impressive learning spaces being created.
We continue to be supported by an active and committed Board
of Trustees who have the best interests of the school at heart. We
look forward to all 2021 holds for us as we continue to support and
serve our fantastic growing community.
Leadership Update:
The aim of the Learner Leadership Programme at Rolleston College is to create a positive environment where all students can flourish. It also provides
opportunities for learners who wish to enhance their experience at College, by contributing to various areas of school life and embracing the Rolleston
College Spirit. Leadership offers challenges – intellectually, organisationally and socially.
There are many different Leadership opportunities at Rolleston College and these reflect the many different ways in which someone can show leadership
and give back to the College. Term One Leadership highlights have included Year 13 Camp, Year 13 Leaders Camp and Whanau Ambassador Camps.
Year 13 Leadership Camp:
The first day of Term One for our Year 13
Leadership Team saw them join the staff for a day
of reconnecting and strategic planning at Orton
Bradley. At night the leaders stayed on with some
staff to further plan for their leadership portfolios
and unpacked what makes a great leader. They were
then joined the next day by the rest of Year 13 and the
Leaders ran an exciting and comprehensive day built
around ‘We are all leaders’ and ‘leaving our legacy
behind at Rolleston College’.
Whanau Ambassador Camp:
Our Whanau Ambassadors were elected at the end
of 2021. There are 10 Whanau Ambassadors per
Whanau and they are made up from Year 10, 11, 12.
This term the Whanau Ambassadors completed
their training, strategic planning and team building
whilst on an overnight camp at Glenroy Lodge. The
Ambassadors worked with key pastoral staff and the
Year 13 Whanau Captains.
Toastmasters share their Expertise:
Earlier this term we were lucky to partner with
two wonderful facilitators from the Toastmasters
- Canterbury, West Coast, Nelson & Blenheim
organisation. A group of 12 learners made up of Head
Student, Captains and our Board of Trustees Student
Rep spent the day in a very rewarding workshop to
help them enhance their public speaking skills. The
learners were very grateful for the opportunity and
learnt a lot from Marina and Rob.
Rolleston College Learning in the Junior and Senior School
Our Learning
At Rolleston College we have top class facilities and an exciting and diverse academic
programme that meets the needs of the individual learner.
The curriculum framework is designed to ensure that the delivery of learning is
innovative, learner centred, skills relevant and cover all aspects of the New Zealand
Curriculum (NZC, 2007).
The Learning Vehicle Highlights:
Ako - Learners meet with their Ako Learning Coach to monitor their progress,
develop their personalised inquiry programme. Other strands of our Ako curriculum
include hauora, te ao māori, and digital tikanga. Highlights include Year 9’s delving
deeper into their passions, Year 10’s planning an end of year camp/activities. Year 11’s
developing person wellbeing plans and goals.
Connected - This is an integrated approach to skill and knowledge development
and allows for an authentic context of learning in the areas of Mathematics, Science,
Social Science and English. Highlight - Year 9’s exploring the concept of identity
looking at who they are, where we all come from and where we are going to.
Health and Physical Education(HPE) - All year 9 and 10 learners take part in the
HPE programme. Highlights include - Year 9 Design Thinking Game Creation and
Year 10 Invictus Games Research
Selected - Learners choose from a range of enrichment options - from technology, to
performing arts, forensic science to sports specific and all that lies in between.
Highlights include - Creative Digital Design, Wild Weather and Save a Life, where
learners get to complete their First Aid certificate.
Senior School:
In the senior years, learners will continue their journey
which will prepare learners for academic success and
achievement. The Rolleston College Curriculum aims
to enable learners to gain an idea of their passions
and purpose in life. Learners can work towards NZQA
certified qualifications (NCEA).
Highlights include - Year 13 Building and Construction
building Tiny Child Playhouses. Year 13 Business Studies
being part of the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES).
C.A.S.E Update
Culture, Arts, Sport and Education Outside of the
Classroom is C.A.S.E at Rolleston College Horoeka
Haemata. In 2021 we have seen the emergence
of many more activities and clubs being made
available to our learners. Many of these activities
and clubs take place on Wednesday afternoon
when the school finishes slightly early. Some
of the many activities include Yoga, Boot Camp
Fitness, Robotics, Music Bands, Chess Club,
Running Club, ESports, Choir, Fast 5 Netball,
Surfing, Turbo Touch and Art Mural Painting. As
well as this we have our Touch, Tennis, Cricket,
Futsal and Volleyball teams and Rowers all
heavily involved in competitions currently.
A recent highlight was the Mixed Senior Touch
Team winning the Canterbury Secondary
School’s Champs. We also wish our Junior and
Senior Futsal teams all the best for the national
champs in Wellington later this month.
Whanau Sports Day
On Friday the 12th of February the school held our annual whanau sports day.
This day saw our learners going up against each other in many different events
for whanau points. For the second year we were extremely fortunate to have the
Hororata Highland Games team come and help us with the day. This meant having
activities such as the caber toss, haggis toss and the farmers walk. These events
combined with some athletic events, whānau relays and the tug of war made for a
really fun day action packed day. It was really great to see the level of participation
and the whanau spirit on display throughout this event. It was also impressive to
see during the staff relay how fast our staff can run. On the day Ngahuru whanau
took out the event with the most whanau points to help them get off to a great start
for the year and Kōanga won the tug of war.
LEESTON-Southbridge shot to
the top of country cricket but
it was Canterbury star Henry
Shipley who stole the show on
Saturday with a brilliant matchwinnings
innings.
Shipley’s stunning unbeaten
140 runs off just 80 balls was
the highlight of the latest round
of the CRV Ambreed country
premier one day 2020/21 competition.
At Darfield Domain, Shipley’s
home side were forced to bowl
first on a fine pitch, which
Weedons took advantage of.
After losing Todd Inness early,
Brad Nightingale (65 off 111) and
James Richards (98 off 109) plundered
140 runs for the second
wicket.
A late flurry from ex-
Canterbury wicket-keeper batsman
Paul Rugg (27 off 24) and
Charlie Robson (23 off 23) lifted
Weedons to a respectable 235/4
off their allotted 45 overs.
Darfield’s run chase got off to
a reasonable start, but Weedons
felt in the game with the score at
51/2 after 12 overs.
But it was Shipley, returning to
full fitness after a season battling
injuries, who soon took over the
game.
His incredible innings of 140
not out included 19 fours and
three sixes as he almost singlehandedly
closed out the win with
nearly 10 overs to spare. He was
ably supported at the other end
by Liam Foulkes who sensibly
fed the strike to the rampaging
Shipley.
Ohoka were handed a savage
home soil nine-wicket thumping
by Leeston-Southbridge after
being restricted to 178/9 in their
first innings.
His Cheviot side made 236/9
in their 45 overs, Sefton paceman
Jed Roberts the standout, grabbing
four wickets.
McKenzie Smith, as he often
has this season, got Sefton off to
a flying chase making a quickfire
46, before collapsing to lose
six wickets for just 51 runs.
Callum Simpson (65 off 62)
and Ollie Bragg (33 off 60) made
a valiant late stand but it wasn’t
enough, as Sefton were bundled
all out for 187 in 38 overs.
their first victory since
Gorse, broom seeds
favoured by moth
GORSE HAS attracted
considerable attention in
terms of biological control
in New Zealand.
Seven invertebrate
species including four
moths, a weevil, a thrips
and a spider mite species
have been introduced to
control gorse.
Recently I found
specimens of one these,
the gorse pod moth (Cydia
succedana) attracted to a
light.
THe 5-8mm long adults
are pale brown in colour.
Females lay 1mm diameter,
white, shiny, flat eggs on
the underside of vegetation
covering the developing
seed pods.
Black-headed creamywhite
caterpillars emerge
after two weeks. After four
weeks larvae leave seed
pods and pupate, usually
on gorse stems.
THe gorse pod moth has
two generations per year
and take two months per
generation.
Each caterpillar can
consume all the seeds in
two or three pods.
At one site in Canterbury
the combined efforts of
the gorse pod moth and
seed weevil destroyed 90
to 100 per cent of the seeds
The Next Big Thing...
West Melton
Previous fetes have proved a great
success, attracting the crowds and
raising funds for West Melton School.
Something for everyone at
West Melton Country Fete
Plans are well underway for the West
Melton Country Fete being held at West
Melton School from 10am to 3pm on the
last Sunday in March.
For a small gold coin donation at the
gate the family can enjoy a day filled with
entertainment from local bands, dancers
and school groups plus all sorts of kids’
games and activities.
These will include mini jeeps, bumper
boats, bungee trampoline, bouncy castles
and of course farm animals, a petting zoo
and pony rides.
While the kids enjoy themselves,
parents can grab a coffee, a raffle ticket
(and hopefully a prize) and browse the
more than 100 stalls offering beautiful
crafts, homewares, clothing, food, and
health and beauty products.
Homemade baking, cotton candy
and bacon butties are among the wide
range of food items that will be available
throughout the day.
The 2017 and 2019 fetes were extremely
successful with over 5000 people through
the gates. As a result the school was
able to raise enough funds for new
playgrounds and outdoor learning spaces
that the kids all love and enjoy every day.
This year’s fete has been proudly
supported by Gold Sponsors Ray White
Real Estate, McLenaghan Contracting and
Wilfield - yoursection.co.nz.
For a full list of stalls, sponsors,
entertainment and activities keep an eye
out for updates on the Facebook Page and
website www.westmeltonfete.co.nz.
So, mark Sunday, March 28 in your
calendar – the West Melton Country Fete
will have something for everyone.
If Covid restrictions mean the
fete is not able to go ahead, it will be
postponed until 2022. Check the website
and Facebook page for further updates.
GARDENING
Give your flower bed
the cottage garden look
IF YOU’VE been
hankering for a cottage
garden feel in your
backyard then hanker no
more. It is easy to create
a cute, carefree cottage
garden.
You can purchase
separate bundles of pretty
flower seedlings like stock,
antirrhinums and carnations.
Once you’ve got your
flower seedlings, look for
a sunny, well-drained area
in your garden. To ensure
your flowers really take off,
dig in a bit of compost to
the soil before you plant.
Then, when you’ve got
the conditions just right,
simply plant each seedling
around 20cm apart. The
trick is to space them far
enough away from each
other to ensure they have
room to grow but not too
far apart to create a ‘gappy’
look.
And remember to mix
all the seedlings in together.
Planting each variety of
seedlings in groups or lines
won’t create a messy, flowery
look.
GARDENING 25
Transitioning your garden into winter
MARCH IS definitely a
transitional month and
depending on the weather, it’s
either an extension of summer or
the early warning signs of winter.
As always, it is a busy time with
harvesting late summer fruit and
beginning the preparation for
your winter vegetable garden.
planted is often not disturbed for
several years. Add plenty of compost
before planting and ensure
the soil is friable (crumbly) and
drainage is good. Bulbs to plant
include anemones, daffodils, hyacinths,
ixia, lachenalias, freesias,
ranunculus, sparaxis, tritonia,
tulips and watsonias.
Vege patch
March and early April are the
final months for harvesting summer
vegetables including; beans,
beetroot, cabbage, carrots, celery,
corn, cucumber, eggplants, jerusalem
artichokes, lettuce, melons,
onions, potatoes, pumpkins, radish,
silverbeet, spinach, tomatoes
and yams.
A gardening diary helps you
keep track of your garden across
the seasons. Make note of which
summer vegetables performed
best and why, and to rotate crops
next summer into different
positions in the vege garden. The
benefit of crop rotation is that
as one plant depletes the soil of
certain nutrients, the next plant
will replenish the soil as it grows.
Some soil diseases can also be
controlled well this way.
Towards the end of March start
preparing your winter garden,
adding fresh compost to existing
soil and raising ‘beds’ to improve
drainage over wet winter months.
Some winter vegetable seeds
GREENS: Winter vegetable seedlings can now be sown.
and seedlings can now be sown/
planted, including; beetroot,
broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage,
cauliflower, carrots, lettuce,
onions, radish, silverbeet, spinach,
swedes, and turnips. Leave
enough room for further plantings
of all these vegetables over
the next few months to extend
harvesting time.
Flower garden
Summer flowering annuals
have been quite magnificent this
summer. Continue to deadhead
finished flowers and cut back
some annuals such as petunias
which can look a little scraggly
this time of year.
As with the vegetable garden,
it is time to start preparing the
winter flower garden or container
garden for decks and patios.
Winter flowering annuals that
can now be safely planted include;
alyssum, calendulas, cinerarias,
cornflower, lobelia, nemesia, pansies,
primulas, snapdragons, stock
and wallflowers.
Bulb planting
March is the final month for
planting new bulbs. Thorough
preparation of the soil is critical
to the ongoing success of bulbs
because the area in which they are
Fruit tree harvesting
Harvest time for many apple
and pear varieties, and the last
of the peaches (golden queen),
plums (satsuma and burbank)
and nashi pears (hosui and
kosui).
In warmer areas, passionfruit
are ripening, as are red and yellow
guavas (towards the end of
March). Fruit will be forming on
all citrus trees so mulch to retain
soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Lawn repair
As soon as regular rain arrives,
work can begin on repairing or
renovating existing lawns or laying
new ones. Good preparation
is absolutely critical and the key
to success. If importing new soil/
topsoil, make sure it’s of the highest
quality and weed-free. Using a
mixture of lawn seed can produce
a more resilient, all-year-round
lawn.
Always use fresh lawn seed for
the best germination rate. Ready
lawn can be useful for small areas,
RIPE: Apples should now be
ready for harvesting.
and once again, preparation is
critical for establishment and
success.
As temperatures cool and rain
becomes more regular, begin applying
fertiliser to existing lawns.
Roses
It can be a bit of a mixed month
in the rose garden depending on
the varieties growing. After the
hot, dry months of January and
February, some roses now have a
second wind and produce masses
of stunning blooms throughout
March and April.
Start fertilising all rose plants
now with specific rose fertiliser
through to early April. Keep
dead-heading finished flowers
and carry out light pruning where
needed.
In the Garden
March brings a change of season, and
changeable weather. Winter veggie gardens
begin in Autumn, so get on to sowing seeds
of winter crops now. Lawns will appreciate
a good feed of fertiliser after a hot, dry
summer. Choose a cooler, overcast day – and
one with rain forecast is even better. Make
sure the lawn gets a good soak of water after
application so the fertiliser can work its magic.
Edible Garden
Chicken pie will tempt the taste buds
Try this relatively quickto-assemble
chicken pie
— you can make it as one
large family pie around
eight individual pies. It will
cook in around 90min. Or if
you prefer a pork meal, our
hoisin pork belly is a twist
on this modern favourite
Chicken and cider pie
Serves 6
Ingredients
2 tbsp oil
2 boneless skinless chicken
breasts, sliced or chopped into
small pieces
1 leek, sliced lengthwise then
finely chopped
1 medium apple, peeled, quartered
and sliced
1 carrot, peeled, sliced lengthwise
and cut in thin semi-circular
slices
2 tbsp plain flour
300ml apple cider
1 tsp chicken stock powder
½ tsp dried thyme or a few
sprigs of fresh thyme
a pinch of mixed herbs
salt and pepper to taste
1 x 400gm block or three sheets
frozen flaky or rough
puff pastry, defrosted
1 tbsp wholegrain mustard
beaten egg or a little milk to
glaze
Directions
Preheat the oven to 210 deg C.
Grease a pie dish if using.
Heat one tablespoon of the oil
in a large frying pan and seal
the chicken in batches, stirring,
setting each batch aside once it is
sealed. Then add the remaining
oil to the pan and, when heated,
add the leek, sliced apple and
carrot, and cook gently until the
leek is softened.
Return the chicken and any
juices to the pan, then stir in the
flour, mixing well. Add the cider
a bit at a time, mixing it in with
a wooden spoon so the flour
doesn’t form lumps.
When all the cider is added,
sprinkle in the chicken stock and
herbs and stir in the mustard.
Simmer gently until the liquid
has almost evaporated, season
with salt and pepper and allow
to cool.
If using a pie dish, roll out
enough pastry to line the base.
Use the rolling pin to lift the pastry
and press it gently into the tin
This chicken
pie filling
can also be
made into
individual
pies, pasties
or turnovers.
with your fingers. Spoon in the
cooled filling. Roll the remaining
pastry to make a lid. Brush
the pastry edges with water, then
place the lid on top.
Use a sharp knife to neatly
trim the edges, then pinch, crimp
or use a fork to press all the way
around the edge to fuse the pastry
together. Use any trimmings
for decorations; a dab of water
will make them stick. Brush the
pie or pies with beaten egg or a
little milk.
Bake for 35-45min until golden
and crisp. This filling can also
be used for pasties or turnovers.
Hoisin pork belly
Serves 4
Ingredients
500-600gm boned pork belly
roast
1 tbsp canola oil
fresh flaky sea salt
2 tbsp hoisin sauce
1 tbsp lightly toasted sesame
seeds
Directions
Preheat oven to 220 deg C.
If using a traditional pork belly
roast, remove skin. While roast
is cooking, rub skin with oil and
grill to make crackling.
Trim any excess fat off roast, if
preferred.
Brush with oil and rub with sea
salt.
Cover with baking film. Place
pork in an oven pan.
Roast for 30min at 200 deg C
then reduce the temperature to
170 deg C and continue roasting
until cooked, about 30min. This
will depend on thickness. The
internal temperature should be 71
deg C. Cover and rest for 10min
before serving.
Brush pork with hoisin sauce
and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Ford’s hot hatchback brings back the youth
I DON’T like being referred to
as old.
Sure, as a pensioner, I’m aged
in the senior demographic but
I’d like to think I’m still relatively
youthful, and when I’m presented
with an exciting sports car to
evaluate, my persona changes to
someone much younger.
Just like when I was presented
with the keys to Ford’s Focus ST, a
traditional hot hatchback charger
that is an absolute screamer when
allowed to breathe freely. I felt
well in control of the beast, and
such is its all-round adaptability
it also doubles as a useful fourdoor,
five-seater for when your
grandkids need transporting, and
I also think they would feel quite
proud when seated in the stroppy
sports car.
At $59,900, the Focus ST sits
competitively with other hot
hatchback models yet it carries
all of the practicality the Focus
has as a series, it is easy to drive
and doesn’t present any special
challenges.
The ST gets a 2.3-litre turbocharged,
four-cylinder engine
which gets about its job with
strong engine sound and character.
I’m not saying it is noisy, it’s
not; the sound is well isolated but
it is there to be heard, the engine
is angry under load and it is a
sound that encourages throttle
use, it is pleasant to listen to.
Ford claims healthy outputs of
206kW and 420Nm, providing
the impetus for a 6.4sec standstill
to 100km/h time.
As mentioned, you don’t need to
drive the ST in performance mode
all of the time, it is happy to dawdle
traffic and during my weekday
commute I was comfortable in it
and felt right at ease, although you
do get the impression it is keen to
get some movement going.
Power is directed through a
paddle-shift seven-speed automatic
transmission to the front
wheels. Shifts are smooth and the
ratios are also structured to meet
the demands of fuel-conscious
buyers.
Ford claims an 8.6l/100km
combined cycle fuel usage average
for the ST. The trip computer
was showing around 10l/100km
when I took the car back to the
dealership. It will also return a
5.4l/100km instantaneous reading
at 100km/h (engine speed
1500rpm), which means you can
have some fun without scoffing
vast amounts of fuel.
I took the test car on a Mid-
Canterbury loop, they are perfect
roads for a performance car.
English Fords have generally been
regarded as having supple chassis
balance and the ST doesn’t disappoint,
it simply dances through
the suspension. It also rockets
between corners with a powerful
surge and swift retardation,
thanks to a performance brake
package.
Grippy Michelin Sport tyres
(235/35 x 19in) turn in precisely
with little steering effort but solid
steering feedback. Gravitational
changes don’t load the tyres, nor
does it affect the way the suspension
operates in a corner; if
uneven surfaces are encountered
there is composure and certainty
within the steering process.
The ST stands out with its bold
FORD FOCUS ST:
Fantastic red
paintwork and big
rear spoiler stand
out and hints at a
performance package.
wheels, body kit and spoiler,
while on the inside Recaro seats
not only support the driver
around the mid-riff, but they are
visual. The test car was painted
bright red, described by Ford as
fantastic red, red ST logos embossed
on the front seats complement
the exterior colour.
The Focus ST is a fun package,
yet has practicality on its side. It
comes extensively equipped with
all of the items you’d expect today
for comfort and convenience, and
safety.
If you are up with the play
• Price – Ford Focus ST,
• Fuel usage – 8.6l/100km
technology-wise, the Focus
as a series also has all of the
functionality to keep you happy.
The entire range has just had
a refresh, there’s more kit for
connectivity and there is an
increased level of electronic safety
spec.
These features not only provide
extra value, convenience and
surety, but they contribute to
the special feeling you get every
time you are in the car, you will
be smiling every time you drive
it and it will certainly make you
feels years younger.
Public Notices
Selwyn District Plan
PRIVATE PLAN CHANGE 67
GW Wilfield Limited have lodged a private plan change request with the Council.
Selwyn District Council
Clause 5 of the First Schedule, Resource Management Act 1991
Plan change 67 (PC67) proposes to change the Operative Selwyn District Plan to rezone
approximately 33.4 hectares located on the south side of Kingsdowne Drive, West Melton from
Rural to Living WM South zone.
The change seeks to insert a development plan and associated rules into the District Plan. If
approved it would result in additional residential development.
PC67 proposes amendments to the Operative Selwyn District Plan that include:
· amending the District Planning Maps to rezone the subject land from Rural to Living WM
South zone.
· incorporating an outline development plan to coordinate and guide the future development
of the site
The plan change request and the assessment of why it is needed can be read at Council’s
Rolleston Headquarters and can be viewed online at service centres and public libraries in
Darfield, Leeston, and Lincoln or at www.selwyn.govt.nz.
Submissions
Any person or organisation may make a submission supporting or opposing any aspect of this
plan change. Submissions must be written and in accordance with Form 5 of the Resource
Management Regulations and is available from any Council Service Centre or on the website.
Submissions may be:
Posted to: Planning Department, Selwyn District Council, PO Box 90, Rolleston 7643
Delivered to: A Council service centre in Darfield, Lincoln, Leeston or Rolleston.
Faxed to: (03) 347 2799 (if you fax your submission please post or deliver a copy to the
details above)
Emailed to: submissions@selwyn.govt.nz
At a later date, all submissions received will be summarised and published. Further
Submissions will then be invited, allowing certain persons and organisations to support or
oppose any of the initial submissions. A Council hearing will then be arranged to consider
all submissions, after which the Council will decide whether to approve or decline the plan
change. Any submitter who is not satisfied with the Council’s decision may then appeal to the
Environment Court.
For further information regarding this plan change or the process outlined above, please
contact Rachael Carruthers on (03) 347 2833.
The closing date for submissions is 5pm on Monday 12 April 2021.
Classic Meets Contemporary
Classic style and modern flair collide at this immensely relaxing family
residence that occupies an easy-care 1.17-hectare section within the idyllic
rural landscape of Lincoln.
Built in 1992 but cleverly extended over the past five years, this home
retains its timeless design, with Oamaru stone construction and a columned
entranceway delivering an attractive opening impression.
The floor plan covers 252sqm (approx.) plus garaging of 54.8sqm (approx.), and
is decorated with neutral hues and contemporary finishes, particularly in the
kitchen, both bathrooms and the laundry, where crisp whites and defined dark
tones deliver contrast and elegant impact.
A trio of living spaces with outdoor access to decking ensures you’re spoilt for
choice when entertaining or unwinding, with the open-plan layout, separate
lounge and rumpus room providing more than enough space for the entire
household. Settled in the heart of the open-plan living and dining area is the
superbly appointed kitchen that comes complete with a scullery and double
ovens, which ensures you can cater to guests with relative ease.
Four bedrooms are supported by two bathrooms and a total of three toilets,
with the master naturally enjoying a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite. Various
heating solutions are on offer, including a log burner in the lounge, two heat
pumps (one in the open-plan area and the second in the rumpus room) and
underfloor heating in both bathrooms, while full insulation, a DVS system and
large-scale double glazing further heighten comfort levels.
The grounds are picturesque, with lush lawns, mature trees and the expansive
paddock providing an exceptional outlook from both decks, while a beautifully
established pergola represents a private, alternative backdrop for outdoor
occasions.
A triple car garage and a carport provides ample storage space, while the
well-sheltered section also contains a well, septic tank, two-bay shed, two
paddocks, a woodshed and a dog run.
Located less than 10 minutes from Tai Tapu and Lincoln, this tranquil retreat is
one opportunity not to be missed.
