The Kaiapoi Promotions Association (KPA)isplanning the event for October, as it looks to bring more iconic events to the river town alongside the Christmas Carnival and the River Carnival. KPA business manager MartynCook says the event is set to attractmany top localbuskers. ‘‘We’re not expectingtoattract any international acts this year, withthe border restrictions, but we willhave a number of acts that localpeoplewill be familiar with from our other events.’’ Therewill be daytime performances for families at Trousselot Park, complemented by foodstalls, while evening performances will be held in the Kaiapoi High School auditorium. KPA is watching nervously as the Waimakariri District Council considers submissions for mixedbusiness use proposalsfor the former red zone site on Hilton Street, across the road from Countdown. The site has beenusedfor the Christmas Carnival in recent years. ‘‘We’re workingonthe theory that nothing will happen this year,’’MrCook says.‘‘The council has made it clear that they want to develop amarket green whichwill sit alongside amixed business use proposal, but what we don’t knowis how big thatmarketgreen space willbe.’’ In the meantime, the association is exploring other options in case its preferredsite is out of action. Options include Norman Kirk Park,Murphy Park,Wyllie Park and former red zone land in Black Street. Overall, the Kaiapoi business community appears to be weathering the Covid19 uncertainty reasonably well, Mr Cook says. ‘‘Thefeedback we are getting is that everything is tracking along OK.’’ He says anecdotal evidence suggests the official unemploymentrate, which is lowerthan it was 12 months ago, is not a true measureasitdoesnot include those with aspouse working, students, or those ‘‘underutilised’’ in parttimeorcasual employment.
