THE RUGGED SAWTOOTH MOUNTAIN RANGE rose from ancient volcanic activity and was shaped by glaciers on the move. These forces gave shape to high peaks offering stunning hundredmile vistas of Lake Superior, gentle valleys, deep, dramatic gorges, and rocky cliffs and shorelines. Covering it all are dense forests of hardwood and conifer, meadows carpeted with wildflowers, and miles and miles of trails that wind through some of the most scenic terrain to be found anywhere in the country. Backpacker Magazine rates the Superior Hiking Trail as one of the nation’s “10 prime trails that leave all the others in the dust.” The Superior Hiking Trail follows the Lake Superior shore from Two Harbors Hiking to the Canadian border, with breathtaking views of Lake Superior, silhouettes of the Sawtooth Mountains, and wild rivers rushing through rocky gorges. Easy access to short sections of the 200-mile Superior Hiking Trail are found at various locations along America’s North Coast. Within a few hundred feet of Highway 61, trails take you to cascading waterfalls and rushing rivers. Many hiking trails are accessed easily from trailheads just off Highway 61. Many area lodges offer complimentary guided hikes for their guests. Boundary Country Trekking offers custom lodge-to-lodge hiking trips; hike all day then stay at resorts, hotels, condos, and bed and breakfast inns.
