NEWS

LETTER

Welcome to the new edition of EDGE Services’ Newsletter

As you may be aware, EDGE paused face-to-face training delivery in line with the implementation of the third national

lockdown. However, I am delighted to say that, with the slow loosening of restrictions and the apparent success of the

vaccination programme, we were able to resume training activities on the 8th of March.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our clients for their understanding during the hiatus and their

appreciation that the safety of our team and delegates is paramount. We trust that those whose courses have been

postponed will bear with us as our schedule is rearranged and hope to be able to meet your training needs at the

earliest opportunity.

Our ‘Need to Know’ feature in this edition focuses on how EDGE-trained key trainers can manage their moving and

handling responsibilities remotely using our online Resources Library while face-to-face training opportunities are

more limited and until such a time that ‘normal’ services can safely resume.

You will also notice our bidding a fond (albeit not final) farewell to much-loved trainer Phil Essex as he enters

retirement, and a very warm welcome to our new trainer Vanessa Martin. We wish you both all the very best.

People Handling Practical Skills Videos

EDGE Services are delighted to announce that Modules

1 - 3 of our new people handling techniques videos are

available on the Resources Library.

EDGE Services’ trainers have filmed an extensive

and thorough range of people handling techniques as

a resource for our moving and handling ‘Key Trainer’

qualified delegates. These were made in direct response

to requests received during the spring 2020 lockdown to

make a video resource available that would help make

distance learning for the practical techniques a more

viable option.

The new videos are split into four separate modules

and they enable EDGE-trained ‘Key Trainers’ (who

hold a current certificate) to deliver practical people

handling skills to their front-line colleagues remotely, via

a video conferencing system such as Zoom, Teams or

Hangouts. While they are not intended to take the place

of supervision and monitoring of staff, the videos may

reduce the amount of hands-on contact that our key

trainers are required to have when face-to-face training

opportunities are more limited.

The modules increase in complexity as staff move up

the modules and cover over 45 individual practical

techniques in total.

www.edgeservices.co.uk

01904 677853

Techniques demonstrated and explained without

equipment include:

• Getting the client ready to stand.

• Sit to stand techniques.

• Chair to chair transfer techniques.

• Managing the slouched client.

• Managing the falling client.

• Assisted walking etc.

Techniques using of a wide range of equipment (both

small handling aids and larger pieces of kit) that are

demonstrated and explained include:

• Managing the fallen client with equipment.

• The use of handling slings and handling belts.

• The use of turntables/rotating boards.

• The use of transfer boards.

• The use of rotating turners and perched transferring aids.

• The use of slide sheets and in-bed turning systems.

• The use of oval gliding boards.

• The use of a very wide range of hoists and slings

including a gantry hoist system etc.

We feel sure that the videos will prove yet another

invaluable resource from the team at EDGE Services and

we hope our clients/delegates enjoy using them.

Module 5 of the practical skills video series is due to be

filmed later this year, if there is anything that our clients/

delegates would like to see demonstrated or included in

this module, we would love to hear from you.

Price Increase from

1 April 2021

EDGE Services would like to advise our clients

that our course prices are set to increase from

1 April 2021. The increase equates to less than

7.5% on our existing fees and has been brought

in to offset the rise in our own costs over recent

years. We have not increased our prices for over

three years.

Course prices will continue to include our

professionally bound, full colour course

textbooks, proposed onward training materials,

access to our invaluable post training support

service for the duration of training certificates

and, for our ‘people’ and ‘children’ handling

courses, access to our exclusive online

Resources Library, which includes videos of

practical skills, additional training tools and a

theoretical e-learning programme.

Additional moving and handling practical skills

videos and e-learning modules are currently

under development and will follow later this

year and we are working with leading experts in

dementia care regarding the further development

of our understanding and managing challenging

behaviour training programme - watch this

space!

Discounted places on public training courses and

on in-house training weeks will still exist and will

be communicated periodically on our website.

All training: public and in-house, booked and

confirmed before 1 April 2021 will still be charged

at the current (lower) rate.

EDGE and the Environment

One of our company New Year resolutions in 2020 was to

take steps to further reduce our carbon footprint and we were

delighted to partner with Make it Wild – a Yorkshire-based

company whose aim is to encourage a greater knowledge,

understanding and enjoyment of the natural world - and their

Carbon Mitigation through Tree Planting scheme. Having

already taken measures as a company to reduce our carbon

footprint we were thrilled to have found a way in which we

could offset some of what remained.

After a year in which green, open spaces have become a

lifeline for so many people, we are delighted to partner with

Make it Wild again in 2021.

The Make it Wild scheme involves their planting trees on

their nature reserves in Summerbridge, North Yorkshire and

ensuring that enough of them reach maturity to offset your

carbon footprint. You can choose how much carbon to offset

– for your business or as an individual – and there is a handy

calculator on their website for you to work out how much to

do.

As they grow, the trees absorb and then trap carbon dioxide

from the atmosphere. Calculations have shown that one

tree can typically trap 3.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide during its

lifetime which is significant in contributing to the lowering of

greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

One of the best possible ways to compensate for some of

our unavoidable carbon footprint and to help ensure that

woodland continues to grow, is through the planting of trees

and we would love to see more people and companies –

including our clients and delegates - getting involved in this

and similar schemes.

Nursing Home Fined Following

Breaches of Bedrail Safety

A nursing home has been fined after a resident’s leg was

repeatedly trapped in a bed rail.

Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates’ Court heard how in November

2018, a resident at a care home in Rhayader had to

receive treatment after her leg was repeatedly trapped

between her mattress and the bed rail, becoming

discoloured and cold to the touch.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive

(HSE) into the incident found that there was a lack

of training and guidance on how to complete a bed

rail assessment. Employees at the home had not

received any training on the safe use of bed rails and

were unaware of the risks from bed rail entrapment.

It also found that, despite the resident’s leg becoming

repeatedly trapped between September and November

2018, no review on the use of bed rails was carried out.

The provider pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3 (1) of

the Health and Safety at work Act 1974 and have been

fined £25,000 and ordered to pay costs of £11,747.

Speaking after the case HSE inspector Sarah Baldwin-

Jones said: “The incident could so easily have been

avoided by simply conducting a detailed bed rail risk

assessment.

“Those who manage bedding equipment, should ensure

that there are no gaps between the mattress and bed rail,

where someone could get trapped.

“Employees involved in the provision and use of bed rails

need to be aware of the key risks and know what to do

if they suspect someone may be at risk of entrapment.

In this case none of the employees recognised the risks

and despite repeated entrapments, nothing was done to

prevent recurrence.

“Companies should be aware that HSE will not hesitate

to take appropriate enforcement action against those that

fall below the required standards.”

Care Home Fined £80,000 After

Man Dies After Falling Out of a

Window

A Surrey care home has been fined £80,000 after a

57-year-old man died after falling from a window while in

their care.

The home pleaded guilty to failing to provide safe care

and treatment, resulting in avoidable harm to a resident at

Croydon Magistrates’ Court.

The home was also ordered to pay £3,474 in prosecution

costs plus a £170 victim surcharge.

The court heard how the resident was found in the care

park outside the home on 17 October 2017 after an

unwitnessed fall from his bedroom. After being attended

by paramedics onsite, he was taken by ambulance to St

George’s Hospital where he died two days later.

The window from which the resident fell was secured by

a single metal chain attached by screws to an aluminium

frame which had been in place for at least 15 years.

A health and safety consultant attended the home the

day after the incident advised that all window restrictors

with chains be replaced as they were not strong enough.

They were replaced in February 2018 with built-in window

restrictors.

Neil Cox, CQC’s Head of Inspection for Adult Social Care,

said: “This is a distressing case and our sympathies are

with the victim’s family and with those affected closely by

his death.

“Where we find any provider has put people using its

services at risk of harm, we take action to hold them to

account and protect people.

“We hope this prosecution reminds care providers that

they must always ensure people’s safety and manage

risks to their wellbeing.”

Important Notice Regarding EDGE Services

Certificated Key Trainers

EDGE Services have put a three-month training certificate extension in place for staff who were due to update

their ‘People/Children Handling and Risk Assessment Key Trainer’s Certificate’ training in January, February and

March 2021.

This means you will still be able to deliver training within this period (three-months post-certificate expiration) and

you will still get our full support in terms of having access to our trainers for clinical or training advice either via

email or telephone. You will still be able to call upon us for legal support and any other form of consultancy that

we offer that can be delivered either over the telephone or via email. For this same period (three-months) you can

continue to have full access to our Resources Library, e-learning programme etc from us upon email request.

Furthermore, we have left in place the three-month eligibility window, post your training certificate expiring, to

allow flexibility with regards to attending a suitable ‘Refresher/Update’ course date and location. While we have

put additional public course dates in place recently, demand is currently extremely high and to secure a place we

strongly advise you to book at your earliest convenience: www.edgeservices.co.uk/courses.

We hope that this demonstrates our commitment to supporting our Key Trainers at this difficult time. Please

Woman Fined for Running West Yorkshire

Care Agency Illegally

A woman who ran a Morley-based domiciliary care

agency has been ordered to pay over £12,000 after she

admitted to providing care illegally.

As a result of the prosecution, brought by the Care

Quality Commission (CQC), she was fined £1,500,

ordered to pay £10,380.91 costs and a £170 victim

surcharge at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 7

January 2021.

Prior to her sentencing, she pleaded guilty to providing

a regulated activity – personal care – in people’s own

homes through her company, without CQC registration.

This is a criminal offence.

Personal care includes assisting people to eat and drink,

dress, bathe and use the toilet.

CQC brought the prosecution after it received feedback,

in September 2018, from a relative of a person who

used her service which, at this time, was not registered

with CQC. This prompted CQC to begin investigating

the company, and inspectors visited its premises,

unannounced, three weeks later, in October 2018.

On arrival, they found a large window sticker advertising

personal care which falsely stated that the firm was

CQC-approved.

EDGE services

Inspectors also found evidence that the company

had 23 staff providing personal care to at least seven

people. They also saw staff time sheets and invoices

demonstrating that it had been operating illegally.

In April 2020, the home care service successfully applied

for CQC registration – following a robust process –

meaning it can now provide a lawful service.

The service was inspected in November 2020 and rated

Requires Improvement. CQC continues to monitor it,

including through future inspections, to ensure people’s

safety.

Joyce Frederick, CQC’s deputy chief inspector of

registration, said: “It is unacceptable that this woman

risked people’s safety by running a care service

without the benefit of CQC registration, so I welcome

her guilty plea. The registration process is important

to appropriately assess services before they care for

people. Services are then monitored and inspected

to ensure that they continue to meet standards that

people should be able to expect. Unregistered services

operate without oversight, putting people at risk of harm.

Monitoring of domiciliary care agencies is especially

important, as people who receive care in their own

homes can be particularly vulnerable because of their

circumstances. When we find providers operating

illegally, we do not hesitate to act to protect people.”

Call for Key Workers to be

Compensated

A new report by the Centre for

Progressive Policy – Pay, productivity

and social value: why key workers

deserve a better deal – calls for the

government to compensate those

working on the frontline for their

contribution during the covid-19

pandemic.

CPP argued that society should

acknowledge the vital work done by

these people in offering a one-off

compensation payment in recognition

of the personal risks they have taken.

It says that while some key workers

are well paid and/or represented by

trade unions, others suffer insecure

job contracts and poor enforcement

of minimum wage standards. Care

workers are cited as an example

with their hourly earnings almost

30% below the median, with a third

employed on zero-hours contracts.

The CPP reasons that respecting

and properly renumerating key

workers is essential beyond the

pandemic claiming that paying

care workers a fair wage would

both improve care outcomes and

contribute to the levelling up agenda

at a time when the demand for care

is extremely high.

Rosie Stock Jones, senior research

analyst, Centre for Progressive

Policy, said: ‘Key workers have been

invaluable to society over the past

year, with many taking huge personal

risk whilst the rest of us stay home –

yet these workers are often low paid,

with many on insecure contracts.

‘This discrepancy between social and

‘market’ value must be rectified, and

there is widespread public support for

this. CPP calls on government bodies

to work together to ensure that the

pay and working conditions reflect

the contribution key workers make to

society, starting with compensation

for the risks taken during the

pandemic.’

CPP is calling on the government

to remunerate key workers for risks

taken throughout the pandemic and to

ensure all key workers receive a fair

wage relative to their social value by:

• Making all key workers eligible

to apply to HMRC for a tax-free

coronavirus compensation payment

of between £200 and £1,200 at the

March Budget at an estimated cost

of £1.5bn – £4bn.

• Consulting on developing sector

specific, minimum pay and

employment conditions that better

reflect the social value and risk

associated with key worker roles.

• Funding local councils to pay all

publicly funded care workers the

real living wage as a minimum.

• Building social care up as a

profession by developing nationally

agreed skills and competencies

frameworks and providing

progression pathways.

Laura Gardiner, director, Living Wage

Foundation, said: ‘In these difficult

times, it is more important than ever

that those who are continuing to risk

their health and wellbeing to keep our

economy going are paid what they

need to live.

‘Key workers are providing a crucial

service in supporting and caring for

the vulnerable and their families. As

a society, we have a responsibility

to go beyond the clapping, and to

compensate these key workers fairly

for their contribution.

‘Paying the real Living Wage is not

only the right thing to do, but is also

beneficial financially for firms, a

fair wage increases motivation and

productivity.

‘And in sectors like social care where

wages are driven by public spending,

we need to move beyond words of

appreciation – policy makers should

commit to a Living Wage for care

workers and increase funding for the

sector accordingly.’

NHS Reforms

Planned

Reforms of the NHS in England,

that will see the law changed

to reverse reforms of those

introduced under Prime Minister

David Cameron in 2012, have

been published in a White Paper

on 11 February 2021.

The planned restructure will

enable health and care services

to work more closely together,

Health Secretary Matt Hancock

said it will mean a focus “on the

health of the population, not just

the health of patients.”

The timing of the changes has

been brought into question by

Labour, but ministers believe

the changes will put the NHS

in a better position to cope with

an ageing population and a rise

in people with complex health

conditions with Mr Hancock

telling MPs that the pandemic

has made the changes more,

rather than less urgent.

The new system would see the

NHS and local councils take

decisions about local health

together. “Integrated Care

Systems” – organisations which

already exist in some parts of

the country - will be set up in

each part of England and be

responsible for funding to support

that area’s health, providing

a holistic and preventative

approach to treating the ill health

of individuals.

the coming weeks, to ensure they

protect themselves and others.

They are encouraging workers

eligible for the vaccine within the

NHS, council, and social care to do

their “collective duty” and “lead by

example” by taking up the offer of the

vaccine.

At present, it is not compulsory for

health and care staff to receive the

Covid-19 vaccine - though they

are being actively encouraged to

receive it. For the currently approved

vaccines, the first dose delivers

most of the protection, gained two

weeks after administration and it

significantly reduces the chances of

staff becoming ill if they encounter

the virus, before the secondary dose

bolsters the protection.

At present, none of the vaccines

will completely prevent Covid-19

infection; rather, it will help offer

protection for those vaccinated by

limiting the risk of serious illness

and minimising the potential for

transmission.

Eligible staff are being invited for their

vaccination either where they work,

at a local hospital hub, a vaccination

centre or through a local GP-led

service. Non-NHS employers, such

as local authorities and home care

providers, are working together with

local vaccination teams to identify

eligible workers and arrange for them

to be vaccinated.

Care Home Sale

The UK’s largest care homes company is to sell 52

of its homes (closing an additional four) and focus on

more specialised high-dependency care for people with

complex dementia and other needs. This announcement

comes amid warnings that care operators are being

pushed to the brink of closure.

Elsewhere in the sector, a drop in occupancy caused

by Covid and falling fees from councils are threatening

the viability of some private homes. Some councils have

told providers they will not be able to increase fees for

residents next year to offset rising costs as a result of the

pandemic.

Care England, the industry body that represents major

providers, had called on the chancellor, Rishi Sunak, to

inject £7bn into social care in the recent budget.

Vic Rayner, the executive director of the National Care

Forum (NCF) said “The sustainability of many services is

coming under significant pressure across the not-for-profit

sector. There is a very real concern that providers may

not be able to continue to operate existing services.”

The chief executive of the group said the changes had

been planned before the pandemic to meet increasing

demand for more specialist and complex care facilities,

but that families had become more wary of sending loved

ones to live in residential care homes during the crisis

for fear of not being able to visit due to infection control

procedures. He also said that growing demand for care

at home was putting additional pressure on the traditional

residential care home market.

Care England have called for support from the

government to help the sector survive.

Music for Dementia Publishes

Guide to Ease Vaccine Anxiety

A new guide has been published to show how music can

be used to help alleviate COVID-19 vaccine anxiety for

people living with dementia.

The one-page guide includes advice for carers, health

practitioners and individuals illustrating how music

can help manage the physiological symptoms and

psychological response to vaccinations among people

with dementia, making the experience more pleasant.

Grace Meadows, programme director of Music for

Dementia, said: “There is no situation that is immune to

the power of music. We have seen this time and time

again during the pandemic. The vaccination experience

is no different; the calming and soothing properties

of music can help reduce anxiety around having the

vaccination, particularly for those living with dementia.

Eating Nuts could help

delay Dementia

Researchers at the National University of Singapore

have published a study, in the journal Age and Ageing,

which found that people who began eating nuts in their

40s twice a week or more were more than a fifth less

likely to have problems with memory when they were

over 60, compared with those who ate nuts less than

around once a month. Furthermore, it suggested that

those who ate nuts once a week experienced nearly the

same benefit, becoming 19 per cent less likely to have

impaired cognitive function in their 60s, 70s and 80s.

The University of South Australia published a study

with similar results in 2019 finding that nut consumption

could improve the thinking, memory, and reasoning

(of their study group of over-55s) by up to 60 per cent,

compared with those who did not eat nuts.

According to the NHS, more than 850,000 people in

the UK are living with dementia, and it affects one in 14

people over 65. It is estimated that, by 2025, there will

be more than one million people in the country living

with the condition.

Quick Guide to Delivering Moving and Handling Training

Remotely for EDGE Services Trained Key Trainers

All the below information is found

via www.edgeservices.co.uk. Go

to the top of the page on the bar

at the right-hand side and click on

Resources.

This takes you to our Profile page.

Type in your Delegate ID, a five-digit

code found in brackets on the lower

left of your EDGE certificate. For your

password type in your surname, this

is case sensitive.

This takes you to your EDGE

Services Account page - from here

you can access all the options

detailed below.

Delivery of Theory Training

Remotely

Option 1 – Workbook

Click onto Resource Library.

Click onto the blue jigsaw puzzle

piece titled Delegate Pack. Choose

PHRA if you obtained a certificate for

people handling training for adults

or CHRA if you obtained a certificate

for children and young adult handling

with us. A 25-page workbook can be

downloaded and printed from Folder

6. This will take your learner about 30

to 45 minutes to complete they will

then return it to you to be marked.

Option 2 – E-learning

Click onto Learner Management from

your accounts page.

Add up to 100 learners by name.

They will be issued a user name.

They can then log into our e-learning

via the main website (see above) and

commence their e-learning program.

After 100 learners have been

registered, you can request EDGE

Services to increase this limit.

There are 18 multiple choice

questions and would take between

30 to 45 minutes to complete. The

learner will not know if they have

got the questions right or wrong but

you will get this information via your

‘Learner Management’ page so you

can give them feedback. You may

choose to ask them to re-do the

program if you feel they have not

received a satisfactory result.

They will need to answer each

question before the program will

allow them to go to the next page.

They do not have to undertake the

E-learning in one sitting.

Delivery of Practical Training

Remotely

Video Conference Delivery

Click onto Resources Library from

your accounts page.

At the bottom you will see ‘Videos of

People (Adult) Handling Techniques’.

There are currently four modules (a

5th module is planned for the autumn

of 2021).

Under each module number is a

brief overview of the content and

the number of moves contained

within it. The modules start at basic

techniques (Module 1) to more

advanced techniques (Module 4).

You might use only the first module

as part of your induction training and

then use additional modules for your

staff’s refresher/update courses.

Show each technique via a video

conference system, then ask staff

to practice that technique. You may

need to show the video several

times, or pause the video, before

asking the staff to demonstrate the

technique for you. It’s important to

give them feedback before going

onto the next technique. The time

required to complete the practical

training will vary, depending on the

skill set/experience as well as the

number of staff members attending

your video conference. As a guide,

allow 45 minutes for 3 moves. Some

moves such as hoisting take longer

so this is merely an average but

hopefully gives you some idea of

what you can achieve in your allotted

time.

Please Note.

None of the above remote learning

options are a replacement for

effective risk assessment of manual

handling techniques or for a robust

policy/procedure to define the

parameters that staff should work

within. It remains the Key Trainer’s

responsibility to ensure their learners

are competent and proficient at safe

manual handling. Hands on, face to

face training remains EDGE Service’s

preferred option for the delivery of

manual handling. However, during

these unprecedented times creative

solutions need to be used to deliver

a service. If in doubt, face to face

training may be necessary to ensure

the safety and well-being of the

clients in your care.
