Film review by Cat arina Quint as
As they attempt to survive an airborne virus
pandemic a group of young people go through thick
and thin trying to overcome all the obstacles that a
crumbling society creates, with the increasing death
rate, fear overwhelms the public, the envy of those
who are immune takes over peoples sense of
perspective. Two young people fall in love, one
immune, and as far as they know the other one not?
Their love slightly resembling Romeo and Juliet and a
forbidden relationship give the film a cliché feel. After
a relative gets sick Nico, the immune, goes on a
mission to get immunity passes so that he can save
his love interest, to do this he gets involved with all
kinds of bad people and getting in all kinds of trouble,
this gives the film a thrilling sensation, keeping the
audience on edge throughout the whole film.
Throughout the stressful and thrilling scenes, Kj Apa keeps us on our toes
with his thrilling and exiting performance and with his great way of
portraying a young adult trying to save the life of those who are important
to him, whilst Sofia Carson completely takes over the rebellious part once
things turn south, her impressive impersonation of a young woman who is
desperate to live a life outside the system with the men she loves, keeps on
surprising us throughout the film with her superb acting as Kj Apa?s love
interest.
As for Alexandra Daddario, her performance on this is not quite as
impressive has to be expected, considering her past performances in other
films such as the action film San Andreas in 2015, her appearances are
short and her representation of a shallow struggling singer and song writer
just does not suit her, she was destined for a bigger part. Not that her
performance is bad, it is simply not impressive. Peter Stormare, who plays
Emmet on the film, on the other hand, he completely fulfils our
expectations when we think of the bad guy in a film, his acting was
exquisite and he portrays his intimidating character incredibly
well.Although this film has its ups and downs, Demi More?s performance
stays immaculate and coherent throughout the film, her portray of an
emotional mother trying to protect her sick daughter while dealing with an
unbalanced husband is outstanding. As for the youngest actor in the film,
Lia McHugh who plays Demi More?s daughter, even though her
appearances are quick she does not disappoint, her part as a sick child
could not have been easy to portray, but she is completelyup to the
challenge. LastlyBradly Whitford keeps on surprising us with his parts,
his conduct of Demi More?s unbalanced and selfish husband is
impressive, none of his scenes in this film will disappoint you.
Early screenings of this film were in a way attacked by
critics, it was said that the film should not be released
until the end of the pandemic so it would not make
people susceptible to the ideology of the film, a lot of
critics were afraid that when people saw the film it
would create an environment of panic and fear from the
viewers since it portrayed such a realistic issue and that
it would lead to chaos. However, this film is quite the
romanticized situation, not the real deal which makes it
less realistic in order for it not to scare the viewers. Most
critics also comment on how the actors took an
enormous risk when partaking in an innovative project
such as this one, a project where no one knows what the
outcome is going to be or how the public is going to
react.Throughout the film none of the actors disappoint,
perhaps the story line was quite unclear and messy and
this is why it has been so criticized.
Featuring Kj Apa, Sofia Carson, Alexandra Daddario
Demi More, Bradly Whitford and Peter Stormare,
Songbird was a rollercoaster of emotions from fear,
stress, anticipation and thrill to fulfilling and gratifying at
the end, However, a film with an issue as real and recent
as a pandemic deserved a better ending, not that the
cliché sequence that it falls into at the ending is bad or
disappointing , just that a film that portrays such a
realistic matter could have had a more positive ending,
in order to give the susceptible audience some sort of
hope. A lot of thrillers become predictable after a certain
moment in the film, Songbird never does, you never
know what is going to happen next, and I promise
you,you will not predict its ending
With this said, just like everyone else?s, my expectations for
this film were quite high, yet it was not what I was
expecting, it is not like anything you have seen before, but
it is also not spectacular, now, is songbird really the worst
film of 2020? well... no, not even close. Although it is not an
Oscar winning thriller it is still an interesting view of what
our future may behold, the director, Adam Manson, makes
us see the world through his eyes in this film, which is
impressive and incredibly interesting, and yes creativity is
subjective and everyone can look at it differently however,
this is still a compelling vision that was brought to life by a
great group of actors and screenwriters.
All and all, Songbird is not a film I would particularly watch
more than once, I would not feel the need to do so, nor is
it a film that I would necessarily recommend for a movie
nigh with the family, regardless, it was interesting to see
what all the fuss was about and get a chance to make my
own mind of the film. This film is an upheaval
representation of our society and of how this one could
possibly react to such development of the virus, it is
interesting to make predictions and gaze uponwhat our
future might look like and this film shows just that.
