Welcome to
MAYFIELD/
GRAVES COUNTY
It’s Unbelievable that the Mayfield/Graves County Business & Visitors Directory is completely full again this year. What pandemic?
Only four firms got out and four firms go in. I was so concerned that we would lose half of our advertisers. Keep in mind many are
in the Directory as a way of showing support for the project. Hopefully everyone find it helpful. For visitors you can find so much of
what makes our area unique by browsing these pages. After discovering all about our area we hope you will be so glad you came.
The cover shows some of the leaders of Mayfield and Graves County and also four legends: Alben Barkley, Scott Lemon,
Eddie Williams and Mickey Stubblefield. So proud of the cover designed by Stacy Jones a 16 year employee.
So many unique and fantastic restaurants that will make the franchises obsolete during your stay. One of the newest is
Adagio Pasta and Grill--fantastic Italian food. One of the oldest is Carr’s Barn, established in 1954, and has expanded across the
street with Carr’s Steak House. You will love the service at Dairy Queen which has also served ice cream for many years plus a full
menu. You want a great breakfast and buffet, go to Longhorn Family Restaurant serving since 1962. Best Mexican can be found
at Los Amigos and Ls. Majestic has been serving great food since 1975. Snappy Tomato has an unbelievable pizza buffet. No
better home cooking can be found than at Rita’s Cafe and Wilma’s Kountry Kitchen. Bar-b-Que it is Larry, Darrell and Darrell.
New residents can discover many services you will need from the outstanding Realtors, financial institutions, furniture
stores, community organizations to non-profits. These firms also show how much they care about our city and county by supporting
this publication.
You will find support and information from the Mayfield/Graves Chamber of Commerce,
Graves Growth Economic Development, Mayor Kathy O’Nan, city mayor, and Jesse Perry county
judge executive, and Richard Heath state representative. We like our officials. Tourism information
shares major events.
Both education systems, Mayfield & Graves County systems have stellar accomplishments in
educating and nurturing children from preschool to high school and millions of dollars in scholarships
and honors. As our students continue on in their careers, whether in the workforce or continuing education,
they have a background and foundation for success.
You want to know more about Mayfield? Growing Up Mayfield by Mark Huffman and a
DVD “Mayfield Cardinal football: The Making of a Dynasty. (page 85) Mayfield As I Recall by John
Davis A look back from the late 1800s to the early 2000s. John’s hope is the things he recalls, will help
you rekindle some of your memories as you read Mayfield-As I Recall. 306 pages of photographs and
information. Both books and DVD are available at the Good News Shoppe.
In 1978 I began publishing Mayfield/Graves Catalog of Homes and my daughter and son-inlaw,
John & Pam Wiggins operate that business and have added King’s Graphics. When I am out working on putting together the
Mayfield Graves Business and Visitors Directory, I am often asked why I am still working.
Publishing the Directory and Coming Home Again magazine I do because I enjoy them. I
begin in November and contact all the nearly 200 businesses and enjoy working with them
on their advertisements. Once again many of the firms that are involved are involved strictly
because they want everyone to know they support and are proud of Mayfield and Graves
County. This is our tenth year of publishing the larger edition of the Directory. You can find the
Mayfield & Graves County directory at www.MayfieldDirectory.com as well as the 2018, 2019
and 2020. This makes it available 24/7 all year to visitors and the general public. Proud of the

Annie Gardner Foundation Board of Directors: Kelly Weber (left), Don Sparks, Scott Robbins, Jim Heath, Barry
McDonald and Executive Director, Teresa Rochetti-Cantrell.
The Annie Gardner Foundation, founded in 1941 by Mayfield resident Ed Gardner, is still going strong in 2021. The Foundation’s
Board of Directors, as well as its employees, are planning a year of celebration to mark the incredible milestone.
“In speaking with other charitable organizations, their directors and employees, it is quickly realized what a treasure that this
organization is to the people of Mayfield and Graves County,” commented the foundation’s executive director, Teresa Rochetti-Cantrell.
The Annie Gardner Foundation assists Mayfield and Graves County residents, who have proof of five-year residency, in meeting
their needs in the areas of clothing, utilities, rent, medical and education. One of the specific details about the organization that is particularly
special to Jim Heath, the organization’s chairman of the board, is that its assistance is only for those who have lived in Mayfield
and Graves County for a minimum of five years. “Mr. Gardner was specific in these requirements, which are stated in the organization’s
original paperwork, and it’s a mandate that is strictly kept to this day,” Heath said. “His purpose in creating this foundation was to help
the people of Mayfield and Graves County where he spent his time — and where he worked to build what we have today in the Annie
Gardner Foundation.”
As with other organizations, the current pandemic has provided a challenging atmosphere for the Annie Gardner Foundation;
however, the employees are looking forward to a “soft re-opening” of the clothing bank in March. Shoppers will be limited in numbers,
and will be required to use hand sanitizer and face masks while inside the building. “While it has been a challenge, we feel that we have
not missed a beat in assisting those who were in need during the course of the pandemic,” Rochetti-Cantrell added.
- Submitted by The Annie Gardner Foundation
Teresa Rochetti-Cantrell is my friend who I have always had the highest regard for her. For me who she is speaks louder any verbal
messenger of God. She is... Now she has written a book! Read it! Visitor or local it is an unbelievable true story and you will need
Kleenex. Mel
Former Mayor Teresa Rochetti-Cantrell is shown witha a copy of her book, “Finding Frank.” Her story for a
little more than fifty years had been a blessed one. She had been married to the love of her life for nearly thirty
years. They had raised two wonderful children, and were on the brink of emptying their nest. Her work had
recently taken her to a new level, being elected as her city’s first female mayor, although getting to that point
in her career did not come without some frustrating--even painful consequences. She learned that those dark
time had been necessary rite of passage for what was in store for her and her family. It started with a simple
question that she thought she could never completely answer. But God. He had more in store--in finding the
answer to that question--than she ever could have imagined. Finding Frank is the journey of an adult woman as
she searched for information about her biological father, who she had believed to be dead for many years. In sharing her story, Teresa
Rochetti-Cantrell wants to bring hope to others in similar situations. (You can purchase the book at the Good News Shoppe page 26)

Alben W. Barkley, Former Vice President of the United States
Willie Alben Barkley, the eldest of John Wilson and Electa Eliza (Smith) Barkley's eight
children, was born November 24, 1877, Lowes, KY (Wheel) Barkley worked on his parents’ farm
and attended school in Lowes, Kentucky, between the fall harvest and spring planting. Alben W.
Barkley. In 1905, he was elected county attorney for McCracken County, Kentucky. Spouse: Jane R.
Barkley (m. 1949), Dorothy Brower Barkley (m. 1903) Education: University of Virginia School of
Law, University of Virginia, Oxford College of Emory University
Alben Barkley Delivers Immortal Farewell Address, April 30, 1956
It was perhaps the best exit line in all of American political history. Never has a United
States senator bade farewell with such timing and drama. Kentucky’s Alben Barkley served in the
U.S. House of Representatives from 1913 until 1927, when he moved to the Senate. In 1937, Senate
Democrats chose him as their majority leader. At the 1948 Democratic convention, the 70-old
Barkley won the vice-presidential nomination. The following January, after 12 years of leading the
Senate from the floor, Vice President Barkley became its constitutional presiding officer. His young
grandson considered the formal title of “Mr. Vice President” to be a mouthful and invented an
abbreviated alternative, by which Barkley was known for the rest of his life: “The Veep.”
Barkley loved the Senate and became the last vice president to preside more than half the
time the Senate was in session. He was also the last vice president not to have an office in or near the White House. Despite the honor of
his vice-presidential position, Barkley missed being a senator. He enjoyed telling the story of the mother who had two sons. One went to
sea; the other became vice president; and neither was heard from again. When his vice-presidential term ended in 1953, Barkley happily
ran for Kentucky’s other Senate seat. His 1954 defeat of an incumbent Republican returned Senate control to the Democrats by a one-vote
margin and made Lyndon Johnson majority leader.
On April 30, 1956, the 78-year-old Kentucky senator traveled to Virginia’s Washington and Lee University. There he gave one
of his trademark rip-snorting, Republican-bashing speeches. At its conclusion, he reminded his audience that after 42 years in national
politics he had become a freshman again and had declined a front-row chamber seat with senior senators. “I am glad to sit on the back
row,” he declared, “for I would rather be a servant in the House of the Lord than to sit in the seats of the mighty.” Then, with the applause
of a large audience ringing in his ears, he dropped dead. For an old-fashioned orator, there could have been no more appropriate final
stage exit Wikipedia
Scott Thompson Lemon
Scott was born April 12, 1890 Benton, Marshall Co.,
KY and died July 27, 1974 Marion, Williamson Co, IL.
In 1919 after his father J.R. Lemon died, Scott, Bryan
and his half-brother Clay inherited The Mayfield Messenger
daily newspaper his father founded in 1900. Clay was the editor,
Scott the business manager and Brian oversaw the mechanical
department. In 1920, Clay sold his interest in the
paper to Scott which made Scott the sole owner, editor and
publisher of that paper. Likely Bryan sold his interest prior
to 1920. It merged with the Mayfield Times in 1923. Around
1925, Scott sold the newspaper to a partnership formed by
George J. Covington and George Byron Bingham. In 1930,
The Messenger was sold to the Evans brothers. In the mid-
1980s the paper was owned by the Haskell family of Martinsville,
Virginia and sold in 2015 to the Paxton Media Group.
After selling The Mayfield Messenger in 1925, Scott opened a printing shop which he owned for about 40 years. He later published
a semi-weekly newspaper known as the “Newsy News”.
Scott was a 4 term Democratic mayor of Mayfield - 1933, 1945, 1949 and 1957. His accomplishments included constructing the
overhead bridges spanning the Illinois Central and Gulf Railroad (1st term), introducing natural gas to the area (1935) and construction
of the General Tire Plant (1959).
Prior to his death, he was a member of Mayfield’s First Christian Church and past president of the Parkhill Sunday school class.
On Saturday, 27 Jul 1974, Scott (84) died in the Veterans Hospital in Marion, Illinois (about an hour from Paducah) where he was a patient
for two weeks. Survivors included Larry Lemon (nephew), Mrs. Joe Goodman, Louisville and Mrs. A. R. Hamm, Avon Park, Florida
(nieces) and Mrs Bryan Lemon, Mayfield (sister-in-law). Scott was buried in Highland Park Cemetery, Mayfield, Graves, Kentucky.

Wilker "Mickey" Stubblefield
First African American Player in the “Kitty League”
Wilker Mickey Stubblefield (February 26, 1926 – February 19, 2013)
In 1928, known for wearing large yellow shoes, one of the most recognized cartoon
characters named Mickey Mouse came into existence. In his early teens, Stubblefield picked up
the nickname “Mickey” that he went by for the rest of his life. He wore hand-me-down shoes
(passed on by older players during the beginning of his baseball career) that closely resembled
Mickey Mouse’s unusually large shoes.
In 1937, at the age of 11, Stubblefield served as a batboy for Mayfield’s all-white Kitty
League. At 13, he was employed with the local Dr. Pepper Bottling Company, and pitched for
the Mayfield Black Hawks, an all-black semi-pro team. He graduated from Dunbar High in
Mayfield, Kentucky, and attended trade school in Paducah, Kentucky to learn the principles of
becoming a chef.
He played one season in the Negro leagues in 1948, as a starting pitcher for the Kansas
City Monarchs. He started 2 games for the Monarchs and completed both of them. His nickname
was “The Mayfield Mounder.”[1]
Stubblefied was signed as a free agent to the Mayfield Clothiers of the Kentucky–Illinois–Tennessee
League on Thursday, June 26, 1952, Mickey became the first black pitcher to sign in the history of the Kitty League. The
first black ever to wear a Kitty League uniform, Mickey made his debut with the Mayfield Clothiers on June 27, 1952 About 1,500 fans
— black and white — packed War Memorial Park and overflowed into the adjacent football grandstand in right field for Stubblefield’s
historic Kitty League debut. They gave him a standing ovation to start the game and he struck out the first batter he faced, Paducah third
baseman Russ Davis [who finished third in the league with a .353 batting average]. He struck out six batters, walked five, and scattered six
hits in the complete game victory, winning 5-4”. Out of safety concerns, Mickey was only allowed to pitch in front of his hometown fans.
He was later drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates after integration, but never made it to Major League Baseball. Satchel Paige taught him how
to throw his curveball.
Mickey was a member of the Negro League Living Legends and an honorary lifetime member of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum
in Kansas City, MO. Known as an outstanding pitcher who helped break the racial barrier in baseball, on February 9, 2014, Mickey
Stubblefield was inducted into The Nebraska Baseball Hall of Fame.

Welcome to Our Home!
"Beginning in December 1883 Graves County was established in the center of the Jackson Purchase.
From then on Graves County grew rapidly as new settlers arrived to take advantage of the reasonable land rates.
Adjacent forest gave way to cultivated fields of tobacco and corn. Soon churches and schools were established
and Graves County began a steady growth."
Sometimes we hate to say it out loud but Graves County hasn't changed much since the year it was established.
People still move here to settle to take advantage of reasonable land rates. We still have plenty of forests
that support a strong logging industry as well as plenty of recreational hunting for residents and visitors. We
still have plenty of cultivated fields of tobacco and corn. We have a large population of churches throughout the
county that minister to large congregations. And our schools are locally, regionally and nationally acclaimed.
We have a wonderful hospital that attracts physicians to our way of life. Graves County is a great place to visit,
to live and to raise your family.
And we love having you here. We'd like to invite you to come see us. You'd like it here. Our county, one
of the largest geographically in the state of Kentucky, is ideal if you enjoy outdoor recreation. We have places
to hike, fish and hunt. There are acres upon acres for horseback riding, ATV riding or just for a Sunday drive.
Check out all that we have to offer here in our piece of paradise.
With our diverse heritage and history, many find that Graves County is a place to learn where we have
all come from. Our history is well-documented. Many of the teachings of our fathers and grandfathers are still
practiced. Whether you enjoy quilting, bee-keeping, making sausage or brooms or curing tobacco or hams,
many of us work as generations did before us.
If you choose to stay you will find opportunities in both agriculture and industry. Many of our families
still make a living raising corn, soybeans, beef, pork, goats, and tobacco. Others take advantage of area industry
to develop and maintain an above-average quality of life. Or if you are looking for a place to continue your
education, many have found the Jackson Purchase rich in higher education.
The County Government strives to make our home the best place to be. We pride ourselves in that fact
that we offer a safe place for our citizens to live and to work. We continually look for areas to improve and work
with our residents to make all of our homes the best they can be.
If you get a chance to head into our part of Kentucky, we want you to know that you are welcome. And
we look forward to having you here.

Fancy Farm Vineyard
and Winery
is a destination you will come to love. Nestled in the
small rural western Kentucky town of Fancy Farm,
you can enjoy a wide variety of wines and the friendly
atmosphere of chatting with new friends and your
neighbors.
Tom Curtsinger, owner/operator of the vineyard and
winery, is a fourth-generation landowner from a family
rich in agricultural innovators and history of diversified
farming.
Fourteen years ago, Tom found himself in southern
Illinois at a winery , when curiosity about grapes
got the best of him and he started asking the local
vineyard owners a lot of questions about the wine
business. His search for information about growing
grapes took several years. Tom was convinced that
he could grow “vinifera” grapes, also known as the
European varietals in western Kentucky. He was told
by the experts that the European varietals could not
grow in Kentucky. Tom would soon prove the experts
wrong.
Today, the vineyard now has seven types of grapes,
including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese,
Malbec, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Riesling.
The winery offers a cozy atmosphere with many
weekly events, including local talent as well as
recording artists from Nashville. The winery hosts
events, such as parties, reunions, showers, weddings
and receptions.
Since the beginning, Tom has enjoyed working with his
sons, as well as the love of his life and best friend for
life, Robbie Felker. Robbie has kept Tom grounded and
focused in achieving his dreams.

Rooted in Mayfield-Graves County Since 1875
In the heart of the Jackson Purchase in May of 1875, FNB Bank, Inc. was founded as the First National Bank of
Mayfield with a capitalization of $100,000. Since the beginning, FNB planted its roots on Mayfield’s historic court square.
Through the years, as FNB evolved with new buildings, new leadership, and a charter change, FNB remained headquartered
in Mayfield, KY, and dedicated to serving the community. FNB holds on to its tradition in banking as the seventh oldest
bank in the state of Kentucky. Through our over 140-year history, we’ve stayed locally owned and operated in Mayfield,
serving the customers we saw in our neighborhoods, on the ball fields and in church. Out of our nine offices in Western
Kentucky, we are honored to say that our roots run deep in Mayfield-Graves County, featuring three banking facilities and
one operations facility in this community alone.
Voted Mayfield-Graves Counties Favorite (in 2020): Bank, Lending Institution,
Teller (Trina Erdmann), Investments (Steve Hamilton), Community Supporter and Employer

Eddie Williams was probably the best
inside player to ever play for Mayfield
High School. He was completly unselfish
and was respected by opposing
players and coaches alike. Sometimes
it would seem that he did not have a
good game, until we checked the stats
and he would have led in scoring and
rebounds. He had several college offers,
including one from Roy Skinner
at Vanderbilt Univesity, before taking
one at Murray
Head Coach Bob Sparks
(Coach Sparks shown below talking

Coach Joe Fulks on the right.)

Court Keeps Eddie Williams’ Legacy Alive
On Dec. 4, 1976, Mayfield basketball standout Eddie Williams
collapsed during a basketball game in Olney, Illinois, and died
from apparent heart disease. Nicknamed “The Pearl of the Purchase,”
the 6-foot-5 guard/forward who was playing for Lakeland
College was only 20 years old.
But the legacy of Williams lives on at the park at the corner of
Pryor and Water streets in Mayfield and its basketball court —
both of which bear his name. Public works personnel painted
Williams’ name and number behind the free throw lines for both
basketball goals, as well as his initials and number with red and
black at midcourt. “I’m glad to be his brother,” he said. “I’m glad
to see people still remember him.”
Chris Payne is one. Though a native of Paducah who moved to
Mayfield, he said learning more about Eddie Williams offers
another Black role model for youngsters to look up to and take
pride. So, adding Eddie’s name on the court — which accompanies a plaque inside the fenced area, noting Eddie Williams Memorial
Park’s 1980 dedication — seemed like another step to retain Williams’ place in local history.
Last year, Payne brought up the subject to another Cardinal standout and Mayfield City Councilman Derrick Parrott, who
posed the idea to Mayfield Mayor and former MHS teacher Kathy O’Nan.
“With that (plaque), it doesn’t bring a lot of attention with the park being named after him. But with his name being on both
ends of the court and with his initials in middle of court, it brings up the thought why is this here and people can do a little history
and find out how this park was built,” Parrott said. “The younger generation, they don’t know
this park is called Eddie Williams and the reason behind it. When I grew up in the 90s, a lot of
people knew it as Eddie Williams Park.”
“I had just moved to Mayfield right before he passed away, but I hope that he’d be
super proud of all of this done in his honor,” Kathy O’Nan, mayor, said while watching the
painting process.
Eddie Williams was on All-Jackson Purchase teams in 1974 and 75 and a three-time
All-Third District player from 1973-75, as well as an all-state player his senior season with the
Cardinals. He went to Murray State on a basketball scholarship, but saw limited action due to a broken ankle. He eventually transferred
to play hoops for Lakeland College in Mattoon, Illinois.
According to accounts in the Dec. 6, 1976 Mayfield Messenger, Williams collapsed with just over eight minutes left in the
first half against Olney Central College. Trainers, a doctor at the game, and emergency personnel attempted to revive him. He was
pronounced dead at Richland County (Illinois) Community Hospital. The coroner’s report listed his death related to an undetected
enlarged heart.
Of late, the park has been a focal point for unity events, following protests by the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of
the death of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police officers. The site has hosted other basketball tournaments and cookouts in an effort to
bring people together. James Williams said that fits with his brother, Eddie’s, nature. “Anybody who knew Eddie knew he was a peacekeeper,”
James said. O’Nan said that sense has deep roots in Mayfield. “That’s what we do,” she said. “That’s what Mayfield’s like. That’s
us.”
Article from the Mayfield Messenger
Mayfield, Kentucky was a lot like thousands of other small American towns in the 1950s and '60s. But to the people
who grew up there during that time, it was -- and is -- a special place. Mark Huffman spins yarns from his childhood
that paint a poignant picture of what this town, and indeed America was like when the Baby Boomers were
growing up. It had a court square packed with thriving businesses, factories that provided jobs, and friendships
that have lasted a lifetime. The book is made up of a series of 19 essays, in mostly chronological order, that begin
with Huffman's arrival in Mayfield in 1954 as a three year-old and ends with his departure for college. They include
accounts of Mayfield's minor league baseball team, the Clothiers, stories about leading citizens of the era, and a
candid assessment of Huffman's somewhat painful entry into broadcasting, at WNGO, including an ill-fated live
interview with country music star Loretta Lynn. Growing Up Mayfield is a collection of charming tales that take
readers on a journey back in time. Book and Video can be purchased at the Good News Shoppe.
Mayfield Cardinal Football: The Making of a Dynasty Video by Mark Huffman. The football program began in 1911 and
from the start wass one of most successful in Kentucky. This program recounts the history of this exceptional high school
athletic program and features insights and memories from some of the players, coaches, and journalists who witnessed--
and were part of--it’s rise to national prominence. The program today is ranked 4th in the nation in all-time wins.

Graves County Farm Bureau began in 1937 on the 2nd floor of a rented office building on the west side of the court square. Shortly
thereafter, around the early 1940’s, the insurance company was born to provide affordable insurance to farmers, who at the time
were considered high risk.
Over the years many individuals have volunteered their time to serve as local Farm Bureau directors. Through conservative management
they have continually strived to upgrade facilities for entire memberships which own all the assets.
A small asbestos sided house was purchased around 1962 located at 306 North 7th Street. This served the membership until approximately
1977 at which time the John C. Waters building located at 320 North 7th Street was purchased. The building served as their
home until 1986 as membership continued to grow.
In the mid 1980’s Federal Land Bank and Production Credit Association merged during tight economic times. This allowed the
directors to purchase the Federal Land Bank building.
As membership continued to grow it became evident that additional parking and a drive-up window were very much needed to accomodate
customers. The directors of Graves County Farm Bureau had the foresight to purchase a tract of land while selling off three
parcels to accomodate this need. Our move to the Dick Castleman By-Pass, next to Jackson Purchase ACA and the new FSA office,
is our next step to serve the Graves County Farm Bureau membership. The membership is proud to say that we are part owner of
the new building.

WYMC
still going strong
WYMC radio was born on October 18, 1976. The original
owners were Ron Gentry, Nathan Sholar, Hubbs Waller, Rick
Boggess and Dr. George Pickens. In 1977 Gentry, Sholar, and
Boggess bought out the stock of Pickens and Waller. Ron
Gentry later bought the interest of Sholar and Boggess in
1980. Jim Moore, who had been employed as sales manager,
purchased WYMC from Ron Gentry in 1991 and currently
owns and operates the radio station.
WYMC was Mayfield and Graves County’s first 24-hour station
broadcasting with 1,000 watts day and night. It was the
first radio station in Graves County to air national network
news at the top of the hour.
The music format has covered adult contemporary, country,
solid gold and middle of the road.
WYMC was also the first Graves County radio station to utilize
satellite technology to obtain the best mix of music and
experienced announcers.
While many of the other radio stations in the area have been
sold to large broadcasting groups, WYMC has remained the
only locally owned and operated radio station. It concentrates
on local news, local sports and other programming
that answers the needs of the local community.
WYMC’s programming can be heard at 93.9 FM, 1430 AM, or a
live stream at www.mywymc.com, 24 hours a day.
