welcome
From the Scotland border down to the Tees, this area offers a wide variety of
excellent fishing against a backdrop of spectacular scenery. All major rivers in
the North East, such as the Tyne, Coquet and Wear, boast good runs of salmon
and sea trout. The Tyne is now regarded as one of the most improved rivers
in its water quality and this is reflected in the excellent salmon catches. After
recovering from decades of pollution in its lower reaches, even the River Tees
is now seeing increasing numbers of salmon and sea trout.
Wild brown trout are found in most streams in the area and the many
reservoirs provide excellent sport for both brown and rainbow trout.
Our rivers are also home to good populations of coarse fish, particularly in
their lower reaches. Species such as dace, chub, barbel, perch and roach
abound in many stretches, and in recent years matches on the Tyne have
regularly been won with 60lb+ bags of dace and chub.
The number of stillwaters offering excellent coarse fishing opportunities for
beginners and experienced anglers alike has increased markedly in recent
years. Many now offer coaching for novices as well as the chance to catch
some quality specimens.
Whatever your preferred style of fishing, this guide will help you find some
new waters. So why not try somewhere new this season, and better still,
introduce your friends or family to the pleasures of fishing. A warm welcome
awaits you - tight lines.
Don’t forget your licence
Every freshwater angler in England and Wales aged 12 years or over
must hold a valid Environment Agency rod licence, or risk prosecution
and a fine of up to £2,500.
We’ve made it even easier to get hold of
your new rod licence. Annual licences
have been specially redesigned
(see opposite) and for the first time,
concession licences can be purchased
online. For the eighth year running the
cost of a junior rod licence has been
frozen at just £5.
We’ve also made the licensing process
simpler and more efficient. This means
that more of your licence fee will be
spent on improving fisheries.
Once you’ve bought your licence, you
are issued with a reference number,
which means you can start fishing
straight away. If you buy an annual
licence you will be sent your new-style
credit-card sized licence in the post.
If you buy a 1 day or 8 day licence you
will get a receipt with your reference
number. This should be carried with
you whenever you’re fishing.
• Details of how to buy your new rod
licence are shown on the back cover.
• Rod licences are needed by those
aged 12 years or older fishing for
freshwater fish, eels, trout or salmon
in England, Wales, or the Border Esk
in Scotland but not the Tweed or its
tributaries.
• A licence allows the use of two
rods at the same time when fishing
for coarse fish and eels, subject to
byelaws. If you’re fishing with three or
four rods you will need two licences.
Catch the Impossible
“I flicked the bait out and saw a huge head poke from the gloom. A strike
was followed by an explosion before an uncontrollable force surged
towards the reeds. I could do no more than hold on and pray. Somehow it
turned. The battle’s ferocity continued. A giant copper flank hit the surface
with a back wide enough to put a saddle on. I made a desperate lunge with
the net and pulled her ashore … 44lb 4oz … another ‘Impossible’.”
This dramatic quote about the huge
carp that graces this page is from Martin
Bowler the star of Hugh Miles’s new film
series ‘Catching the Impossible’.
It’s being widely acclaimed as the
best fishing programme ever and sees
Martin team up with actor Bernard
Cribbins. It’s sure to inspire you to
get out on the banks and to take your
friends and family fishing.
Each episode boasts ‘Impossible’
specimens but the ethos of the films is
one to which we can all relate – angling
6 Call us on 08708 506 506
is there to be enjoyed and brings us
closer to nature.
We see Bernard and Martin fishing for
trout and salmon as well as a variety
of coarse fish. But they don’t only visit
exclusive waters – the films show that
most people have good quality and
varied fishing available close to them.
Look through this guide and you’ll
find loads of great accessible waters
near you where you could catch
something different, maybe even
an ‘Impossible’.
Here are some key species targeted
by Martin and Bernard, that you can
catch too:
CARP
The No.1 UK species and good fish
including 20 and 30-pounders are
accessible to all. While hair-rigged
boilies score, don’t ignore corn, meat,
bread and pellets and in the summer
crust and dog biscuits.
‘Impossible’ target: 40lb.
BARBEL
There are now double-figure fish in
many rivers. Pellets and boilies are key
baits but feeder fed maggot and meat
still work.
‘Impossible’ target: 15lb.
ROACH
A fish for all seasons that feeds well in
high summer and on the coldest winter
day. Float fish maggot, caster and hemp
on fine tackle. Feed little and often.
‘Impossible’ target: 3lb.
PERCH
Very often an angler’s first ever fish
as they are greedy and not tackle shy.
Perch are thriving in all sizes with 2
and 3lb+ specimens now plentiful.
Use lobworms, small fish and prawns
for specimens with maggot for bags of
smaller fish. ‘Impossible’ target: 4lb.
Before you go fishing don’t forget
• You must have an Environment Agency rod licence before you fish (see page 4)
and also permission from the fishery owner. There is usually a charge for a permit.
• You must also comply with the fisheries byelaws. Ring 08708 506506 or look on
our website for byelaws in your area.
• The coarse fish close season (15 March – 15 June inclusive) applies to all
rivers, streams and drains in England and Wales, but not to most stillwaters and
canals. Exceptions that retain the close season are the Broads and some Sites of
Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). These are listed in the Schedules attached to
the byelaws. Fishery owners can have their own close season and other rules, so
please check with them before setting out.
