Water rates set to spiral
as demand increases
• By Susan Sandys
RESIDENTS FACE paying
up to $87 more each year for
household water as the district
council aims to meet increasing
costs and manage high demand.
The proposal is part of the
Long Term Plan 2021-2031
consultation document, which
the council adopted last week.
Public consultation opens on
Monday.
This Way . . . 2031 sets out
key projects and activities for
the next decade. There are eight
major proposals. They include
changing the way residents pay
for the supply of their water
to meet increasing costs and
help manage high demand. The
council’s preferred option is to
increase the metered water rate
by 20 per cent each year for the
first two years.
The rate would increase from
its current cost, of 50 cents per
cubic metre (1000 litres) to 72
cents per cubic metre from July
2022 under this option, representing
a 44 per cent increase
over two years. In addition, the
fixed base rate would increase
from $254 to $280 per year.
This would mean an approximate
annual increase of $50 per
year for a low water user, $70 per
year for an average user, and $87
per year for a high user.
The council’s second, lesspreferred
option is to increase
the metered water rate from 50
cents per cubic metre to 60 cents,
while increasing the fixed rate
from $254 to $307. This would
mean an approximate annual
increase of $64 for a low water
user, $73 for an average user and
$81 for a high user.
The rate per water unit for
restricted supplies in rural
areas is also set to increase, by as
much as $433 per year under the
more expensive second option,
for those on 10 water units per
day.
The water supply increases
are within the council’s average
annual rate rises of four to five
per cent forecast in the Long
Term Plan.
YOU WILL have to dig
deeper into your pockets for
water usage if the district
council gets its way.
On page 1 today we report
on planned new charges that
are part of the Long Term
Plan.
The district is growing
at light speed with big new
housing blocks announced
in the past week for Lincoln,
Rolleston, Leeston and West
Melton.
With that comes the
need for infrastructure and
water usage – and that costs
money.
The key to growth is
developing at a pace where
infrastructure can keep up.
That is something the district
council will have to lead and
manage.
In the meantime you
get to have your say on
paying more for water
usage. If you don’t want to
pay, speak up.
Come BARK with us
Firstly, a huge thanks to all our
supportive and loyal customers, who
have transitioned into BARK - our newlook
kennels and cattery. It has been
a rollercoaster of change for all the
staffing team but positive change is
always exciting and motivating.
Introducing new owners and farmers on
Banks Peninsula – Joanna and Andrew Craw
We have seven working dogs, who love
living here as much as we do. Our two
cats are very spoilt and a constant source
of entertainment. When we drive to
Christchurch we now turn left and come
via Weedons Rd and BARK. We have an
excellent team of staff led by managers
Fleur and Jade - together we look forward
to getting to know your cats and dogs.
Our regular customers will have noticed the
newly painted building and fresh signage,
and those of you who have a dog in the
daycare area will have noticed our fun dog
mural on the (no longer purple) container.
Shade sails are going up in three stages with
the first lot into our daycare area. This should
happen before the end of the month.
Next month we have an upgraded heating/
air conditioning unit going into two
sections of our covered boarding kennels,
making for cosier winter nights.
The other big improvement will be a new
roof over the main building, cattery and
boarding kennels. Not so visual for you all,
but it will be good to be weathertight!
Moving onto the services BARK offers, we
are resuming our grooming service on
Tuesdays and Thursdays – this will need to
be booked in advance. Along with daycare
we also have day stay, which offers a
service to those dogs who are ageing, have
ailments or are just less energetic than our
regular daycare dogs. We have a chill zone
near reception, which is a bit quieter. They
still get their three daily walks but away
from the boisterous ones.
As well as aging, or those with ailments,
we also offer day stay for very nervous,
sometimes fear-driven dog-aggressive dogs
too, to work on desensitising them and
building confidence – Bark has had some
amazing results with this
We have noticed a huge growth in demand
for our Daycare zone. With flexible drop off
and pick up times, daycare is perfect for
those who are not on a regular 9am-5pm
shift. While you are at work, your loyal friend
is having a blast. Check out our Facebook
page for regular photo updates.
Anyone who thinks this might be a good
option for their loved one, please ring and
make an appointment to look around. We
are offering your first day free to see if it is
going to suit you both. It is not for every dog,
but like any new environment sometimes it
takes a few visits before they fully engage. A
bit like us! Welcome to BARK everyone.
NINE ROLLESTON residents
did not receive mail for several
weeks after New Zealand Post
changed their addresses without
telling them. It then stopped
delivering.
Lifestyle block owners on
Springston Rolleston Rd, between
Dynes Rd and Broadlands
Drive, only found out afterwards
they had a new postcode. Their
address had also gone from a
rural delivery address to a residential
address.
Resident Karen Coleman said
her RD postie told her in early
February that his contract was
ceasing, and that a new person
would be taking over. However,
as soon as he finished, there was
no mail.
As she faced an empty letterbox
day after day, she went to
New Zealand Post for answers.
In spite of assurances, the organisation
did not come back to
her or fix the issue, so she kept
calling.
During one conversation
about three weeks ago, the representative
she was speaking to
mentioned that Coleman would
have received a letter about her
address change. She said she
hadn’t.
“I was highly p****d off,” she
said.
Neighbour Melissa Mackay
was just as perplexed about not
receiving her mail.
She said in one of her phone
calls to New Zealand Post to find
out why, the representative told
her that she had a new address.
Instead of RD 8 Christchurch,
with the postcode 7678, she was
now at Rolleston, postcode 7615.
The whole episode had been
a “nightmare.” One of the items
which went missing was a credit
card her bank was sending her,
forcing her to cancel it.
“I just want to know where our
mail is,” Mackay said.
She had even gone to the extent
of installing a second letterbox,
thinking that perhaps the reason
her mail was not being delivered
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Mail missing in NZ Post muck-up
was that her letterbox for rural
delivery was on the opposite side
of the road. But then both letterboxes
remained empty.
“It didn’t matter, because we
didn’t get mail in either one,”
Mackay said.
Both Coleman and Mackay
started to get mail again last
week. They suspect there is mail
from the five-week non-delivery
period which has gone missing.
A New Zealand Post spokesperson
told Selwyn Times that
due to continued growth in
Rolleston, some customers
previously located within rural
delivery boundaries would
now have their mail delivered
by a postie. New Zealand Post
communicated the changes to
affected residents by letter, but
then found out some did not
receive the letter and were not
receiving their mail.
“We have investigated and
unfortunately due to a miscommunication
within our team,
we did not deliver mail to nine
residents for a number of weeks,”
the spokesperson said.
New Zealand Post was
sorry this had occurred and
reassured customers it had
delivered any outstanding mail.
It was reviewing its systems and
processes to ensure this situation
did not happen again.
Former Olympic cyclist recovers from
• By Chris Barclay
FOUR-TIME Olympian
Brian Fowler, who remains a
committed cyclist long after
international retirement, will
understandably be travelling at
a more sedate pace on the roads
around Lincoln after a neardeath
experience.
“Not real quick, no,” the
58-year-old replied when asked
if he had plans to get back in
the saddle – and rightly so after
Fowler defied a series of heart
attacks.
A Commonwealth Games
time trial road team gold medallist
at Auckland in 1990, Fowler
emerged virtually unscathed
from his first series health issue,
though the initial prognosis was
grim.
Lincoln resident Fowler was
spotted slumped over the wheel
of his van by a parent outside
West Rolleston Primary School
as the children headed home on
February 25.
Fortunately he pulled over on
yellow lines before losing consciousness.
“When they pulled me out
I was already going purple,”
he said, relying on eyewitness
accounts of his dire predicament
as he has no memory of the
drama.
Link likely in suspicious
Rolleston fires
• By Susan Sandys
A SERIES of arsons at Rolleston
are believed to be linked.
Police responded to the latest
incident on Saturday just before
midnight, with one dog and
handler to try and locate the
offender.
The fire was in a public toilet
block at Foster Park.
Senior Sergeant Dean Harker
said the dog was unable to
locate a suitable track. Officers
were working with fire investigators
and the district council
on the matter, including looking
at the potential for security
camera footage from the toilet
block.
Harker said it was likely the
arson at the toilet block, and
vegetation fires in the week
leading up to it, were linked.
Rolleston Volunteer Fire
Brigade chief Cam Kenyon said
there had been three suspicious
vegetation fires from March 14
onwards, on Stonebrook Drive.
The vegetation fires had been
late at night or in the early
hours of the morning. They followed
a fence fire on March 6 at
Woodcroft Estate.
Kenyon said it appeared there
was a pattern forming, with the
fires escalating from outdoor
and vegetation fires to the toilet
block.
“The police are aware of all of
these calls, and they respond to
anything suspicious in nature,”
Kenyon said.
He urged members of the
public to report any suspicious
fires, even if they had managed
to put them out themselves.
We are starting our annual
targeted weed control program
Starting late March we will be using helicopters for aerial spraying of targeted
weeds on the Ashburton River/Hakatere and the Rakaia River.
Weed control measures in the open riverbed help flood flows pass through and
enhance biodiversity values.
The riverbeds will be surveyed to identify locations that require weed control.
Only targeted weeds (willows, alder, poplar, gorse, broom & lupins) will be sprayed.
THE SOUTH Island
Agricultural Field Days have
attracted more than 600
exhibitors, making it one of
the biggest events in its 70-year
history.
Organising committee chairwoman
Michaela McLeod, of Tai
Tapu, said the biennial event will
boast the largest
working machinery
display of any
field days in the
country.
“This is something
that really
sets us apart from
other field days
and is a wonderful
drawcard for intending purchasers
to be able to see a large
range of equipment in action,”
McLeod said.
New Zealand’s oldest and
largest regional agricultural field
days had humble beginnings, as
a Young Farmers Club fundraising
machinery demonstration
and sale at Motukarara.
The focus on machinery continues
to this day, and exhibitors
from all over New Zealand will
showcase their latest big-ticket
items on paddocks of barley,
lucerne and other crops.
They will have a big audience,
with up to 30,000 people expected
through the gates throughout
the three days.
Christchurch Helicopters’
spraying and spreading operation
will take to the skies. It will
also have its Guimbal Cabri G2
training aircraft on hand for
those thinking about getting
into the aviation industry.
Kiwi rally ace Hayden Paddon’s
400kW rally monster will
add appeal to the Gravity NZ
site on opening day today, before
moving over to the Hyundai site
tomorrow and Friday.
McLeod said the field days
was also a good opportunity for
farmers and agricultural workers
to meet like-minded people and
share ideas and discuss challenges.
One of the events she was
looking forward to seeing was
the country women competition.
Entrants will undertake challenges
such as milking a fake
THE DISTRICT council
is reviewing who may be
responsible for unexpected costs
at Selwyn Aquatic Centre during
its expansion.
Councillor Grant Miller said
remedial actions required at the
original centre should be paid
for by the companies responsible
for their design
and/or installation, and
not the district council.
District council group
property manager
Douglas Marshall said
maintenance at the aquatic
centre was always an expected
part of the $1.5 million
extension project.
However, some further work
was discovered during the
extension. This included adding
bracing in the ceiling to bring
the ceiling bracing up to the
latest standards in the building
code, replacing some bracing
that was deemed insufficient,
costing $60,000. The outflow
“We have also discovered an
issue with moisture build up in
the building’s soffits. We are still
investigating the cause, but the
structure remains safe,” Marshall
said.
“We had previously identified
the need to replace some
temporary bracing around
some of the air circulation
machinery and ducting in
the ceiling space and we’re
working through the design
of that.”
He said that as part of the
maintenance repair process
at the aquatic centre, reviews
were undertaken as to whether
the repairs were a cost to the
council or whether other parties
had a cost liability.
“These reviews are ongoing.”
The Selwyn aquatic centre
opened in 2013. The extension
will see a new 10-lane pool
and upgraded public areas
and changing rooms, to be
completed by October.
Fashion reinvented
in Lincoln
Reinvent Boutique is Lincoln’s
latest and most exciting shopping
experience to hit the town. The tiny
boutique offers big customer service
along with quality, second-hand
clothing selling at affordable prices.
And if getting help with choosing
items you absolutely love is at the
top of your list, then Reinvent owner
Aimee Patchett can’t wait to meet
you.
Aimee is passionate about clothes
and fashion. Her new store, Reinvent,
stocks quality, second-hand clothing
and handbags with brands such
as Trelise Cooper, Kate Sylvester,
Augustine, Charlo, Ketz-ke, Witchery,
Decjuba, Cult of Individuality to
name just a few. Customers will find
items suitable for work, weekends,
weddings and just about any other
event they need a new outfit for.
The idea started over 10 months ago
when Aimee began selling her own
clothes online and when her friends
discovered just how successful she
was, they asked her to sell their
clothing too. The business soon
grew so much that just 10 weeks ago
Aimee took on the lease of her new
store on the main street of Lincoln
to create a unique clothing boutique.
But for Aimee, it’s not just about
selling clothing.
I get so much pleasure helping them.
People don’t always know what to
choose and often think they should
dress a certain way because of their
age.”
Aimee, also known as the ‘Jacket
Queen’, due to her love of jackets,
left a corporate life to do the work
she now enjoys and has never looked
back. She has clients from all over
Selwyn and further afield, some who
drop in weekly and others who come
monthly to see what’s new instore.
She also has regulars who drop off
clothing that she sells on behalf with
a 50-50 consignment agreement.
All clothing items are freshly washed
and steamed before they are labeled
and presented on the racks.
Residents more in control of costs
• From page 1
Currently, the metered
rate of 50 cents per cubic
metre is one of the lowest
rates in New Zealand.
Mayor Sam Broughton
said the first more-preferred
option encouraged better
water management, as
Long Term Plan
proposals include
constructing $18
million of new
community centres at
Leeston, Prebbleton
and Hororata.
Three of the eight
major proposals are
for new community
centres.
They are:
Building a new
community centre for
Prebbleton, costing
$6.3 million, building a
new combined library/
service centre and
community centre
on Leeston Park,
costing $8.9 million,
and developing a new
Hororata Community
Centre on the domain,
costing up to $3
million.
The remaining
four major proposals
are – continuing the
current approach
to maintaining
safe water supplies
and complying
residents paid on the basis
of what they used. It also
gave residents more control
of what their costs were.
The increase was needed
to meet rising costs of
providing water in the face
of changing regulatory
requirements.
with expected
new regulations,
developing a
reticulated wastewater
system in Darfield
and Kirwee with a
connection to Pines
Wastewater Treatment
Plant (WWTP) at
Rolleston, improving
the roading network
with an option to
undertake additional
maintenance by
adding extra funding,
and undertaking an
extensive programme
of roading upgrades
and projects across the
district.
Alongside the eight
major proposals, the
council has listed other
important projects in
the plan. Feedback
in welcomed. These
include – repairing
the Darfield
swimming pool with
a view to building
a new or upgraded
facility in 2030/31,
piping wastewater
In addition, the council
wanted to have its water
infrastructure in the best
place possible, particularly
as the Government
proposed management of
water in future to be taken
over by multi-regional
entities.
from Ellesmere to
Pines WWTP and
potentially including
Upper Selwyn
Huts, expanding
the treatment
capacity of the
Pines WWTP costing
$100 million funded
by development
contributions,
increasing solid waste
disposal charges from
$2.50 to $2.75 for
refuse bags and from
$257 per tonne to
$270 per tonne
at Pines Resource
increasing burial fees
SPRINGFIELD School pupils
and staff, past and present,
gathered with members of the
community on Friday to farewell
old buildings set for demolition.
The school has this week
become a construction site,
for a new $1.9 million block
containing two classrooms, one
break-out space, administration
and sick bay.
Principal Keri Steele said
one of the school’s original
buildings, which is the current
school reception and was the
former dental clinic, would be
retained.
“We have decided we
would like to keep a piece of the
original school on site,” Steele
said.
She said the 39-pupil school
turned 150 years old this year. It
was fantastic that the Ministry of
Education had committed to the
new block.
“It assures us in our
community that the ministry
sees value in our school and that
there’s a school here. They haven’t
chosen to close us, they have
chosen to rebuild us,” she said.
It would be good to have a sick
bay for the first time.
Previously sick children were
put in “a snuggly bean bag in the
corner of the room until a parent
came to pick them up.”
At the farewell on Friday,
pupils acted as ambassadors to
welcome visitors, showing guests
around the school. Photos of the
school, spanning its 150-year
history, contrasted with displays
of plans for the new school
building.
Stories of swimming in the
water race, and gathering to eat
lunch and carve names in the
“shelter shed,” which is today
an old storage shed on site,
abounded, as well as “murder
house” memories of the old
dental clinic.
The design of
the new $1.9
million school
at Springfield.
The current
administration
building will
remain.
Construction of the new
building is scheduled to be
completed by Christmas.
to celebrate 150
years in October
WEEDONS SCHOOL will
celebrate 150 years on Labour
Weekend in October.
Jubilee committee spokeswoman
Marie Mallon said the
original school was built in 1871
at an equivalent cost of $272. It
was staffed at the time by a headmaster
and one assistant.
One hundred years later, in
1971, the school had a roll of 75
to 85 pupils. It was staffed by two
teachers and headmaster Mr R.
Dawson. Today, the role fluctuates
between 155 to 165, with a staff
of seven teachers, the principal
Kathy Bell, and a number of support
staff.
Mallon said the original name
for the district was Weeden, after
innkeeper William Weeden.
However, when a railway employee
painted the station’s name on a
sign he inadvertently changed the
name to Weedons.
Mallon said she and fellow
jubilee committee members were
seeking photos and memories
from the past. She urged people
LINCOLN HIGH
It no longer has two head
THe head students for
this year are Kate Olijkan,
a group of four students
who can each bring their
own strengths, and work
collectively as a team,”
deputy principal Kylie
Students interested
in the roles submitted a
New businesses moving into Tennyson Street
Have you noticed Stage 2 of construction on
the Markham Junction West development
on Tennyson Street is well under way? In
fact, the grand opening isn’t far off! It’s been
designed as the high street of the area with
market research showing locals want a carefully
thought-out plan for servicing everything they
want with the ability to stay local. And with
Stage 1 businesses up, running (and thriving!),
catering to the young, growing population was a
priority consideration in supporting the region.
The Grand Opening: upcoming community event
Expected to open in April, all six new businesses
will be likely be a part of the planned ‘grand
opening’ event. It’s a great opportunity to see
what they offer and welcome them to the
community. No date is confirmed yet, but keep
your eyes peeled for details.
Stage 3 of the development should kick off
sometime in August, with a planned opening
around June 2022.
So, who’s moving in?
Complementing each other, existing
nearby businesses, and in close proximity
to residents and local facilities, six new
outlets are moving in:
• Vivo Hair Salon — haircut and colour
specialists with a personal mission of
helping you feel good. Their salon is
state-of-the-art, and they’re excited to get
involved and support the community.
Genealogy a passion for Fiona
• By Bea Gooding
“IF YOU figure there are 25
years between a generation,
then 500 years ago there were
1,048,576 people involved in
creating us.”
For Prebbleton’s Fiona Lees,
getting to the bottom of her family
roots was like an addiction.
Just like the women who established
the NZ Society of Genealogists,
the Canterbury branch
convener has been hungry to
learn more about her origins
since she was a teenager.
The first generation mainlander
born to Scottish parents
grew up in Lincoln. She started
feeding her passion for family
history after conversations with
her grandmother led to more
questions than answers.
She started to connect the
dots in her little notebook full
of important dates to determine
“whose brother was who,” later
growing into a passion to help
others trace their roots.
“I’ve managed to prove that
one [family] line was an adopted
line through records and oldstyle
sleuthing,” said Lees who
described her most rewarding
discoveries.
“I’ve also managed to prove
that my family was shipwrecked
in 1862 off the Isle of Wight in
the United Kingdom. The Times
in London gave my ancestors’
names.
“It’s a passion and addiction –
once you’ve been bitten, that’s it.”
The society, based in Auckland,
has promoted the study
of family history and genealogies
since 1967, providing the
necessary tools and expertise
for others to make their own
discoveries.
The late Lucy Marshall and her
friends had a shared curiosity
about their ancestors and eventually
started a group.
More than 50 years later, it
morphed into a national society
and has since grown into more
than 60 regional branches across
the country.
Established in 1968, that makes
the Canterbury regional branch
the oldest in New Zealand.
Lees was appointed the Canterbury
convener in July last year
and has been on the committee
for more than 10 years. But her
involvement spans back to the
1980s.
Retiring last year, she worked
for the city council for 35 years
as a technical application specialist
helping internal staff with
their computers.
As the convener, she puts
together monthly newsletters,
deals with memberships and
transcribes school records for
future genealogists as it was an
“underused” record in NZ.
“In Britain, there are census
records with raw data being kept
where you can track your family
every 10 years,” she said.
“But in NZ, governments saw
fit not to keep that raw data and
only had summaries on how
many people lived in suburbs.
School records tell you where
you’ve come from, who your
guardians are, your age, and
where you’re going to next –
you can track a family through
there.”
Based at the Parklands Community
Centre, the society had
many resources on hand including
a branch library, computers,
paper records, parish registers
and monumental inscriptions.
People can become members
and connect with other family
history enthusiasts nationwide to
share tips and tricks on research
methods.
“We encourage people who
come to the library to have the
basics about yourself, your parents
and grandparents, it’s good
to have a skeleton tree. Otherwise
by the time they’ve talked
for five minutes you’ve lost all
the information,” Lees said.
“We have people rock up and
say: ‘I want to learn more about
my family, I think they came
from Denmark.’ So people who
are interested in searching that
area have a meeting, share ideas
and tips on how or where to find
things.”
The process was not always
simple seeing as 80 per cent of
information could not be found
online, but having the internet
nonetheless definitely made
things easier.
“We used to have to go and
write letters, visit places to get
information but now you’ve got
lots of information online,” she
said.
But most genealogists were not
interested in just a list of facts –
the importance of social history
built a much better picture of
how that person lived.
Putting the facts together and
shaping it into a story “makes it
far more fun.”
“It’s always nice to put your
person in a place with what else
was happening in the world at
that time. A list of facts is a bit
boring,” she said.
“Most of the real genealogists
aren’t just interested in names
and the date of birth, marriage
and death. They actually want to
learn more about people, what
they did, where they lived and
why they shifted countries.
“We’re also finding people are
related to each other within the
branch through DNA which is
fun,” she said.
But DNA testing did not
always have the most desirable
results.
Although people could trace
their ethnicity or find birth
families if they were adopted,
finding out they were not related
to someone was “devastating.”
“There are brick walls that will
never be solved,” Lees said.
“But for some people, the
downside with DNA is showing
that who you thought was your
father, actually wasn’t. That has
been really devastating.”
Lees shares her addiction of
family history with her husband,
David, throughout 40 years of
marriage.
The mutual understanding
meant date nights were a little
more interesting in odd places
like cemeteries and libraries.
For Lees, that passion was
wanting to know more about
where she came from and what
influences made her the person
she is today.
ADVERTORIAL
Hundreds flock to new Hornby Club
Hornby Club has taken on hundreds of new members
since its Phase One opening in October 2020, and the
Club is expecting many more when the Club opens Phase
Two later in 2021.
Paul Inwood, General Manager of Hornby Club, says
there are many reasons the Hornby Club are attracting
new members, however affordability, a welcoming
environment and its new architectural building have
helped with its membership boost.
“When we decided to redevelop Hornby Club, we knew
we needed to create a space that was inviting, spacious
and one that would cater to a new generation of Hornby
Club members. Phase One has included a new Legends
Bar with a massive, big screen TV for all the sports,
ten pool tables, dart boards, the introduction of our
stunning Pavilion Café and also a new live entertainment
Mezzanine venue. Phase Two will see us open a family
friendly restaurant with children’s playground and a
400pax multi-purpose events centre. It is certainly an
exciting time for the Club and its members,” says Paul.
The Pavilion Café is an exciting move for Hornby Club,
as the Club now provides breakfast and brunch on the
menu.
“We are open every day from 8am with our awardwinning
barista creating fantastic coffees for our locals
every morning. We also serve delicious breakfasts and
bake our cabinet food fresh every day. I think our scones,
cakes and pies are right up there with the best. The
Pavilion Café is a great addition to the Club,” says Paul.
Though Hornby Club has undergone a significant face
lift, it still has many of its offerings that has made it a
success over the past 65 years. The Club still has its sports
sections that play pool, darts, cards and more every week.
It has meat raffles most days and its live music is just as
good as ever.
“Club members still love a meat raffle and our fantastic
weekend live music certainly brings in the punters. Our
discount of 5% on all food and beverage for all members
is also a big draw card. When most pubs charge upwards
of $10 for a pint, you can get a pint of Speights for less
than $7.50 at Hornby Club and a 12-inch pizza for just
$16.00. That’s a very good deal” says Paul.
An annual membership to Hornby Club is $34 per
year. To learn more about becoming a member of
WHEN YOU mention
“supertramp” most people
think of the great English
rock band of the 1970s and
1980s, but supertramp is
also a term used to describe
species that easily and
continually migrate and are
often the first to arrive in
newly available habitats.
THe supertramp beetle
(Rhantus suturalis) is one
such species.
THese beetles are brown
with light coloured
margins and are 10.5 to
12.5mm in length. They
are one of the world’s most
widespread species of
diving beetle.
Rhantus suturalis is
native to New Guinea
but has spread to New
Zealand, Australia, Europe
and parts of Asia. Both
larvae and adult beetles
are predacious and feed on
mosquito larvae, which are
their preferred food.
BACKYARD CRITTERS
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology
(insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a
new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to
raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things
around us. Check out the full list of invertebrates found at
www.inaturalist.org/projects/backyard-biodiversity-bugs-inmy-lincoln-section
Beetles that could be
taking the long way home
THey can consume as
many as 30 mosquito
larvae per day. Adults can
fly over 500m to migrate
from one pool to another
when pools dry up over
summer.
Beetles sometimes hunt
in groups and can be
cannibalistic when food is
scarce.
Adult diving beetles
store air under their elytra
(hardened forewings)
enabling them to be
submerged for some time.
In contrast, larvae breath
through straw-like trachea
at the tip of their abdomen.
Larvae reach 15mm when
fully grown, move to mud
for a brief pupation period
before emerging as an
adult.
So, if you ever see one of
these supertramp beetles,
they may well be “taking
the long way home.”
bays, harbours, pockets of bush and farmland which has a
sparse road network and a strong sense of isolation in parts.
A fantastic area of exploration and a playground which I enjoy
I particularly enjoy painting the dry summer tussock colours
OUR PEOPLE – TANIA ROXBOROGH
Overcoming adversity to become a
Lincoln’s Tania
Roxborogh has used
her own gruelling
life experiences
as inspiration for
her books that are
published across a wide
range of genres, she
talks to Susan Sandys
I was stunned to read your
Wikipedia page, you have had
many major life events, one
after the other. For the benefit
of our readers, can you give a
background of yourself?
I was born in Christchurch,
my (late) father could be violent
when he was drunk, he was
lovely when he was sober. My
parents split up when I was
three-and-a-half, I had a little
eight-month-old sister and an
older sister. Mum packed us off
to nana’s in Tauranga, and then
we lived in Te Puke for a few
years and she met somebody
else. He was an itinerant farm
manager, so we travelled around.
We then moved to Northland,
but just as we settled my
stepfather had a car accident
in which my stepbrother was
killed. It was horrific, and that
completely changed our family
to be even worse. My stepfather
couldn’t work, he was in hospital
for a long time, and he wasn’t a
pleasant guy. It meant that my
mum had to work, so she wasn’t
around much, and we shifted
again and we shifted again. I
started to get into trouble at
school, now I understand why. I
got into trouble at the start of my
year 11 year.
My father contacted us and
wanted to make a connection
with us again, so I ran away
and I contacted my father in
Hawarden (North Canterbury). I
went to live with him and it was
a complete disaster, because he
hadn’t changed. I was with him
for about a month and he kicked
me out. Mum said I had to come
home. I said: ‘If you make me
come home, I will leave school.’
My aunt and uncle were looking
after me.
Because I had been in trouble
with the police in Whangarei
I had a social worker, I had a
case number, so I rang social
welfare and said: ‘Hello my name
is Tania Kelly, this is what’s
happened, is there anything you
can do, I want to stay at school.’
They said: ‘Yes, we can put you
under section 11,’ which means
you get fostered into a family.
(The school, Hurunui College)
nominated the youngest teacher
who had no children to have
me. They became my foster
parents, and I kind of went
through a few of them within
the community because I was
hard work. My teachers, they just
were wonderful, and my teachers
at Whangarei were amazing
as well. They obviously saw
something in me. My fostering
finished at the end of year 12, but
I had got my university entrance,
and I was determined to be a
teacher.
You were scalded badly as
a child, and in a car crash
yourself?
Yes, I got third degree burns
all down my face (when I ran
into my stepfather who was
carrying a pot of boiling water).
I was eight or nine. I was in
intensive care, and in hospital
for three weeks. My book Third
Degree recounts that situation,
what it felt like, that’s one of the
books I’m really pleased to have
written. That was the same year
the car accident happened for my
stepfather.
When I was in Hawarden, in
year 11 (aged 16), we had had a
long day hunting with horses,
thankfully, we didn’t have horses
on the back. The driver (my
boyfriend) just fell asleep, the
ute flipped and I went through
the windscreen. I could hear the
doctor pulling the glass out of
my knee, I had 38 stitches in my
knee. One night my dad took me
to the pub, because he would go
to the pub every night. He got so
drunk that I had to drive home,
and I ripped two stitches out. But
when you are that unwell, like he
was, you don’t know how to look
after children, you don’t even
know how to look after yourself.
I did (forgive him), I wrote to
him.
Forgiveness is about letting
stuff go. Everybody has things in
their lives that are hurtful that
somebody did something to hurt
them. I say to my children: ‘It’s
like having a museum in your
brain of stored resentments, it
just kills all creativity.’
Chicago - CentreStage Rolleston’s
biggest undertaking yet
Rehearsals are heating up for CentreStage
process and pushing the
theatre company to some
new limits with his ‘vision’
of the show. Expect some exciting twists
within the women’s prison to keep you
rival vaudevillian murderesses locked up
in Cook County Jail. Nightclub star Velma
is serving time for killing her husband and
sister. Driven chorus girl
Roxie is tossed in the joint
for bumping off the lover
she’s been cheating on
her husband with. They
both meet and engage the
famous rogue lawyer, Billy
Flynn – their rivalry ever
increasing for the media
limelight.
17
Looking back, do you feel
angry or bitter?
No, I just think how lucky I
am that I had amazing teachers
and these foster parents when
my sister had none of those
things, and she ended up having
her first child at 14. I still have a
very good relationship with my
mum. I think, being a parent
myself, I understand how life can
get hard. I think she made some
poor choices. But I, again, am
lucky. When I was at primary
school I had a primary school
teacher who must have had a
feeling something was going on
at home, and would have me
come and stay with her. There’s
no room for bitterness in life, it’s
just poison you drink yourself. I
always believed in God, became
a Christian as a young person,
became really committed when
I was a teen after I started
university.
Did any of these major life
events inspire you to become a
writer?
At the time I didn’t think so.
But now that I look back, I think
what I’ve always been trying to
do is, because I didn’t have it as a
child, is to have a voice, because
nobody cared or listened. If
you are not believed or listened
to, one of the most powerful
things that can happen for you is
someone to read, understand and
go: ‘I hear you.’ For me, in a way,
I was recounting my childhood
experiences and my observations,
and giving voice to it within the
plot of story. My writing helps me
to figure it out.
What has been your greatest
achievement?
The thing that I want to do in
my life is be humbly obedient to
God and passionately involved
in the lives of others. My greatest
achievement is that I have
stayed the course. Hamlet talks
about the slings and arrows of
outrageous fortune, and that has
happened to me. I have had some
great wins and some great losses
and I haven’t given up. Other
than that, winning the children’s
book award (Esther Glen Award
for Junior Fiction for My New
Zealand Story: Bastion Point) in
2017 was pretty good, and my
first novel (If I Could Tell You . . .)
being published was pretty good.
Have you met your goals?
Our teacher (when I was at
school) asked us to write down
three things we wanted to be
when we grew up. I wrote down
four, I wanted to be a teacher, I
wanted to be a writer, I wanted
to be an actor and I wanted to be
rich. I say to the kids (I teach):
‘I have all of those things. No,
I don’t have a BMW, but I can
go to the supermarket and buy
Toffee Pops, and I can pay my
power bill and the phone bill.’
I still get a buzz that I can go
and register my car. We never
registered our car (when I was
growing up), because who had
the money to do that?
How did you get into writing?
When I started teaching at a
MEMORIES:
experiences have
(left) and Sharon.
Right – Roxborogh
fellow author
Margaret Mahy
at Mahy’s 70th
birthday.
school (in my 20s) I took on the
role as head of drama. The only
plays I had available to me had
male-dominated roles. I wrote
a few plays for the girls and I
was part of the drama teachers’
association. Someone in there
knew someone in publishing,
so I wrote this drama textbook
on how to teach drama. It got
published; I was now in the
stable of this publisher. I began
writing my novel (after becoming
pregnant with my second child)
and I finished it within six weeks.
(My baby daughter) took ages to
feed, I would latch her on and
then I would type. I submitted it
to a publisher who was incredibly
generous. They said: ‘It’s not
written very well.’ But they liked
the story, and they taught me
how to write. They taught me the
things that I know now, it really
does snowball from then. So I’m
up to about 32 texts now.
Have you always remained in
teaching as well as writing?
Mostly. People often say:
‘Why don’t you just write?’
How boring would that be, I
hate writing. It’s like having
homework all the time. But I like
telling stories,
and how I feel when someone
says: ‘I love your book.’ This is
my 32nd-year teaching. I had
a little time off for my children
(now aged in their 20s), six
months for one, a year for
another. Then I had a year off as
a writer in residence (University
of Otago, 2006), and then I got
a scholarship to have a year to
finish my degree in Māori.
An experience
for all the senses
An experience for all the senses, created with the community and for everyone is taking shape at
the entrance to the Rolleston Town Centre.
The sensory experience, designed to cater for people’s different neurological and physical needs,
will be built by Armitage Williams, and is intended to be open by the end of the year, around the
same time as Te Ara Ātea.
Surrounded by raised gardens and trees, the experience will be a highly accessible space with
a treat for all the senses, from a quiet space, to areas with bursts of colour, musical instruments,
different tactile experiences, smells and even tastes from edible plants, Council Landscape
Architect Dylan Robinson says.
“Everything has been thought about to stimulate a range of senses—scented flowers, colours in
planting and pathways, the tactile experience of the ground and walls, to where you might situate
different plants, like planting scented and textured plants next to where you can sit and rub your
hands through them”
Waitaha School students and staff have been heavily involved providing ideas and inspiration for
the design and the students will decorate tiles for an art work in the quiet space.
Ten Selwyn schools will decorate art poles and Springston mosaic artists Macs Mosaics will be
mosaicking a large ball that will double as a water feature which people will be able to operate
through a ground level button.
The decorated ball will sit at the entrance to a tactile area with a circular pathway featuring a
boardwalk with musical bells, a section patterned with river stones and one of recycled pavers
creating a fun cobbled effect.
There will also be a communal area with a large table near the entrance from the northern carpark.
A central pathway crossing the experience and linking it with the accessible car parking and Te
Ara Ātea will include an A-frame arbour at one end that can hold patterned and coloured panels or
hanging art work.
A tactile wall is planned for the future, and the space is designed to be able to incorporate future ideas.
Options open for youth at expo
An opportunity to expand their horizons was on offer for Selwyn
high school students last week.
Around 80 Year 12 and 13 students from the four Selwyn high
schools attended the Council-run Youth Employment Expo at West
Melton Community and Recreation Centre.
The day offered students the chance to meet with and discuss
career options representatives from 18 businesses and
organisations including trades and horticulture, emergency services,
the armed forces, the Ministry for Primary Industries and training
institutes including Mito and Ara Institute of Technology.
Ellesmere College student Samantha Powe, 16, said the expo had
been helpful, giving her a lot to think about in terms of possible
careers, even before she had finished visiting all the stallholders.
“I’ve had some rough ideas about doing something with animals
or with machinery, but it’s expanded my thoughts about things and
there’s still a few more places to ask about.”
She appreciated the variety of options offered by industry training
organisation Mito and by the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, she said.
The expo was an opportunity to support Selwyn young people and
provide options beyond what they might have expected, Council
Group Manager Community Services and Facilities Denise Kidd says.
“We are always keen to help businesses in Selwyn as well and
encourage young people that there are good options out there for
them to use their talents and make the most of the opportunities
available here in the district. We’ve had some great positive
feedback from the organisations involved and the schools. It was
good to hear the young people were keen and excited by the
opportunities on offer,” she says.
OUR PEOPLE
‘I was morbidly obese’
• From page 17
So you can speak Te
Reo Māori?
Yes, I’m doing my
Masters in Te Reo Māori
now. I’m looking at how
Shakespeare uses the
natural world in his
imagery and plays to
explain human behaviour,
and comparing it to
the way that Māori use
the same thing in their
Whakataukī, their
proverbs. I haven’t even
started my research and
I know it is going to be
similar.
What are your hobbies?
I love watching TV
series, crime thrillers and
I’m a geek when it comes
to Star Trek and things like
that. So my wind-down
is watching a really good
television story. I have a
new puppy, his name is
Coach named after a TV
character, Coach Taylor
from Friday Night Lights.
I am training him. I play
solitaire, often I’ll play
cards when I’m stuck in a
plot point, and I can work
it out. I love having coffee
with friends. I love reading.
I love swimming, we have a
pool, it’s not a very big pool
but I do lengths in that.
I love living in Lincoln, I
love Selwyn. I’ve written a
SUCCESS: Tania Roxborogh at the New Zealand
Book Awards for Children in 2017.
short story about Motueka
and talking about the
Southern Alps being like a
quiet kaumātua just sitting
there, keeping us safe.
You’ve had battles in
adulthood as well, with
weight?
In my book Fat Like Me
I kind of chronicle how
is it that this tiny, skinny
little kid, young adult,
ended up being morbidly
obese. It’s a memoir. For 10
years (following my second
pregnancy) I was morbidly
obese and I tried so hard,
but I also comfort-ate as
well. People would say just
eat less and exercise more.
And I would exercise, and
just not lose any weight. I
ended up having a gastric
by-pass, and I lost 60kg.
It’s been the best thing that
ever happened to me.
What does your future
hold?
I always think teachers
should have a break after
seven years, probably I
will look to see if I can
have a break and carry on
with my study. I want to
be a healthy older person,
healthy and strong. I feel
very blessed at the
moment.
Strength
in numbers
How we’re rolling out the COVID-19 vaccine
We have secured enough doses of the Pfizer vaccine for everyone
16 years and over in Aotearoa. Any vaccine’s strength is in numbers.
The more of us who get vaccinated, the stronger and safer we’ll all be.
It will give us more freedom in our daily lives, and more options for our
whānau, our businesses and our country. Because when we roll up our
own sleeves, we’re helping to protect all of us.
Here are the key facts about the Pfizer vaccine:
It’s safe
It has been approved by our own
Medsafe experts. It’s also already
been used successfully all around
the world by millions of people,
and by thousands here in
New Zealand too.
It’s effective
The Pfizer vaccine is 95%
effective when you receive
both doses.
It’s free
The vaccine will be free for
everyone in the country. We have
secured over 10 million doses of
the Pfizer vaccine. That’s enough
for all of New Zealand.
New Zealand’s vaccination rollout plan
The rollout plan for the Pfizer vaccine is simple. Everyone in the country aged 16 and over falls into
one of four groups. Firstly, we’ll protect those most at risk of picking up the virus in their workplaces
– and then those most at risk of getting seriously ill or dying from COVID-19.
NOW FROM MARCH FROM MAY FROM JULY
Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4
Border and MIQ workers
Frontline workers and
people in high-risk areas
65+ and people with
underlying health
conditions or disabilities
Everyone else
aged 16 and over
More strength. More freedom. More options.
We’ll let you know when it’s your turn for the vaccine. Until then, please
keep using the NZ COVID Tracer app, and stay home if you’re sick.
Swimming pools
make a big splash
Imagine the sound of laughter as family
and friends enjoy splashing around in
your new pool next summer. Installing
a swimming pool on your property
continues to be a popular option for many
as they enjoy a staycation at home.
It is a great time to organise the
installation of your new pool with locally
owned and operated supplier Lagoon
Pools who will make your dream come to
life.
“We really enjoy helping home owners
to create the ideal spot for family to
gathering during the warmer months.”
Not only does Lagoon Pools install the
pool, they can offer the complete package
including paving, decking, landscaping
and fencing to ensure your entire pool
area looks amazing.
“The pool area can be a stunning visual
point all year round with the cover off
and the lights on,” says Julie Hastings
who owns Lagoon Pools with husband
Warren.
Lagoon Pools installs pools in sizes to
suit both small and large sections, ranging
from five metres to 12 metres in length
with a variety of widths, colours and
shapes. There really is a pool for any site.
Lagoon Pools supplies 100 per cent
composite fibreglass pools and, with
patented innovations, every swimming
pool is supported by their lifetime
structural warranty and a lifetime osmosis
warranty.
Additional features including pool
lighting, fountains, swim jets and spa
jets etc which enhance the pool area
transforming it into an extended living
space where family and friends can relax,
Julie says.
It takes around five days to install a
pool and the finishing touches can take
from four to eight weeks depending upon
the design.
Looking after
your pump &
filter needs
Pumps & Filters is the go-to place for
solutions to your domestic or business
needs whether it is a low-pressure
shower, a pump for your caravan or
energy savings for your water use.
Nitrates in drinking water has become
a recent concern and they can provide
a solution with a under bench filtration
system which means your glass of water
will taste as it is meant to be.
For current caravan and campervan
owners or those looking to see local with
one in the future instead of travelling
overseas, Pumps & Filters has a range of
12v and 24v campervan pumps in stock.
A low-pressure shower is never good,
particularly in the colder months, and
is more common in older homes. A
solution is a shower booster pump
which is easily installed and can boost
hot water pressure throughout the entire
home. Pumps & Filters also supply
underfloor heating pumps.
Saving energy is often on the top of
land owners’ lists whether you have
a lifestyle block or a small farm. The
company has a range of household
pumping options and brands to choose
from providing constant water pressure.
The energy savings come via inverter
technology and they are suitable for
both drinking water in domestic systems
and for gardening applications.
Future plans for Pumps & Filters
include irrigation sprinklers and popups
for domestic installations.
The company specialises in solutions,
delivering a fast and efficient service to
residential, commercial and industrial
customers throughout Canterbury. They
are also happy to provide on-site visits
and quotations.
Pumps & Filters are open from 8am
Enhance your outdoor
area with custom-made
shade products
Canterbury’s summer sun can be hot and intense so when you want to
enjoy being outside with family and friends, but need to feel comfortable and
relaxed, locally owned company Shadecraft can meet all your needs.
Specialising in custom-made shade options, Shadecraft has been in
operation for 17 years and prides itself on its many satisfied customers.
Business is mostly generated through word of mouth, says owner Mark
Levey, and he thanks all those who have referred Shadecraft to other
customers.
The products are of the higher standard and Mark is always available and
generally on site during installation to ensure things run smoothly.
One of Shadecraft’s most sought after products, Mark says, has been the
Eclipse canopy which offers and outdoor area protected from all weather
conditions, but still lets in the natural light. These can also be fitted with drop
blinds to fully enclose the area.
Shade sales are another popular choice. These provide protection from the
sun while also visually enhancing the area and offering ambiance for those
social gatherings.
Other options available from Shadecraft include carports, umbrellas and
louvres.
So if you are considering enhancing your outdoor area for next summer
or you need some advice for what would work in your space, give Mark
a call on 0800 742 332, Cell phone 0274 981239 or visit their website at
In the Garden
March brings a change of season, and
changeable weather. Winter veggie gardens
begin in Autumn, so get on to sowing seeds
of winter crops now. Lawns will appreciate
a good feed of fertiliser after a hot, dry
summer. Choose a cooler, overcast day – and
one with rain forecast is even better. Make
sure the lawn gets a good soak of water after
application so the fertiliser can work its magic.
Edible Garden
Prepare your winter veggies by sowing seeds
now. Varieties include; Cabbage, cauliflower,
broccoli, beetroot, winter lettuce, brussel
sprouts, carrots, leeks and silverbeet.
sustainable warmth to your home.
A cosy home is a happy home and
a blazing wood fire that lasts all night
can make all the difference. Blaze King
fires do just that with new catalytic
technology enabling the fire to produce
thermostatically controlled heat all night
long.
“People really enjoy waking up to a
warm home without worrying about the
fire going out during the night. They can
then add more wood to the fire when
they get up, turn up the heat and they’re
in a cosy home no matter what the time
of the day is,” says Heatstore Commercial
Manager David Chalklen.
Blaze King log burners can last 12
or more hours without having to be
stoked up and work by using a clean air
technology that raises the temperature of
the smoke to burning point.
“Being able to generate heat from
otherwise wasted energy in smoke
allows for a much cleaner burn, easily
meeting and raising the bar for log
burners available in New Zealand and
Environment Canterbury’s ultra-low
emission burner (ULEB) standards.”
Customer feedback has been
phenomenal with customers saying that
they never had a fire that heats the whole
home and keeps going all night. Even
those who live in rural areas and don’t
need to meet the low emission standards
buy Blaze Kings.
Blaze King has a 40-year history of
making wood fires and a 30-year award
winning history of making catalytic
wood fires, mainly to heat homes in the
freezing Canadian winter. They are also
very energy efficient burning up to 30 per
cent less wood than a conventional fire.
HeatStore’s showroom is at 2/472
Blenheim Road has over 20 different
types of log and pellet burners on display
and the team are happy to provide their
expert knowledge to ensure you make
lifestyle.
HOME PROFESSIONALS
Wednesday March 24 2021 Selwyn Times 31
Decorating trends for 2021
Colour and decorating trends for 2021
feature a s some extremes for decorating
from cool and calm to sharp and
sophisticated.
If you would like to adopt an optimistic
mood in your home, look to rich warm
colours, bold patterns, shapes and
textures. Yellows, oranges and reds do
the job like no other when it comes to
bringing cheeriness and energy to enliven
and invigorate a space.
Another alternative is an easy breezy
look which fits beautifully in a seaside
bach but also as a casual and comfortable
vibe at home. Beach colours that evoke
the sea, sky, sand and surrounding
scenery to create a soothing space. This
sort of colour scheme is not only easy on
the eyes, it can also be easily adapted to
warmer and cooler weather.
Pair these hues with
blonde timbers, natural
rattan, seagrass baskets
and linen in the warmer
months and heavily
textured woven throws
and rugs when the cooler
weather sets in.
Changing times require
changing measures. With
the popularity of cool greys
slowing, colour palettes are
showing signs of warming
up. Beige and taupe are
becoming the ‘new’ go-to
neutrals offering dreamy
elegance. The retro
obsession of recent years
has helped quietly sneak
in pops of brown décor,
but now that we’re in the
new decade, it seems we’ve
reached a tipping point for
chocolate hues to make a
bigger splash.
One reason why brown is
on the rise may stem from a desire
to shift away from the pinker
and redder palettes that have
been pervasive. Warm
terracotta and golden
beiges are maturing,
and browner tones have
begun to come forward
as a natural progression
of those hues. The overall
demand for increased
sustainability and our
growing need to feel more
connected to nature, also
makes brown a logical candidate
for decorating.
Don’t forget your home’s exterior
as a way to make an impact,
including pops of colour adding
refreshing curb appeal among
oceans of neutral weatherboards.
Whether it is a section of creativelycoloured
cladding, a front door in an
eye-catching hue or a collection of
freshly painted pots lining your front
walkway, it often doesn’t take much
to make your home a standout.
When it comes to outside, there
is no hotter choice than black for
fences and weatherboards and
choose a paint that means you can
see more of your timber’s grain and
get an appealing rustic country barn
aesthetic.
GARDENING
Cold-tolerant feijoas
make good pickings
HEALTHY: Feijoas are easy to grow and have
many nutritional benefits.
THE AROMA and
flavour of fresh feijoas is
unbeatable.
Feijoas are easy to grow
and will provide you with
oodles of fruit in late
autumn.
Feijoas are an excellent
resource for hydrating the
body and providing soluble
fibre that combat a build
up of toxins in the digestive
system.
Originally from Brazil,
these fruiting trees are
becoming more popular.
Eating one feijoa supplies
around 25 per cent of the
recommended daily allowance
of vitamin C. Feijoas
can be eaten fresh as part
of a breakfast, whole fruits
for lunch and used in pies
and puddings.
Eating two to three fresh
fruits per week will provide
numerous nutritional
benefits.
A wide range of types
are available – some
varieties are self-fertile,
but will produce heavier
and more regular crops if
pollinated by one or more
varieties.
Plant at least two
varieties to ensure crosspollination
and good
fruiting.
Plant feijoas in a sunny
position in free draining
soil.
Feijoas make a fantastic
hedge that will tolerate
wind and even coastal conditions.
Feijoas can be planted in
containers.
They will tolerate frost
and cold temperatures.
Trees will mature to
2m-3m in height and
approx 1.5-2m wide.
Prune feijoas to form an
open tree which will allow
bird pollination, wind
movement and sunlight for
fruit ripening.
Water well during long
dry periods and when the
fruit is developing.
Fruit ripens in late summer
through the autumn.
Apply general fertiliser
once a year in spring and
mulch trees in dry areas.
Harvest when wind
fallen fruit starts to appear
on the ground.
When picking, select
fruit that is slightly soft
to the touch. Feijoas will
ripen a little once picked
but are best left on the tree
to ripen naturally.
[Edition datE]
Dressing your property
up for sale
Your house is on the market and you hope to
get a good price. While market performance will
largely influence this, presenting your home at its
best will help.
First impressions count from
the moment potential buyers view
a property from the street to the
moment they walk through the front
door.
Weed the garden, cut back unruly
shrubs and prune trees where needed.
Kill off weeds in the lawn, sprinkle
grass seed over bald patches and
fertilise the lawn.
Indoors, tidy up. Get rid of excess
or bulky furniture, toys, books, hobby
items or fitness equipment and if too
many photos on the wall pack these
away so the home looks roomy.
If there is a gap or a room needs
enhancing, look at what you have. A
piece of furniture might be painted up
or an old leather bound book popped
on the coffee table. Shelves will also
add depth to a narrow space while
mirrors may give the illusion of a
larger space. In entryways, add an easy
chair, small table, bookcase or large
vase.
Awkward spaces such as coved
ceilings in attics or upstairs rooms
might be converted into storage
shelving and the room given a purpose
as an office, playroom or extra
bedroom so viewers can see how the
room might be used.
Stow possessions neatly in
containers, shelving or tidily in
cupboards; highlighting the storage
potential within the home, ensuring
it is clean and tidy for viewing at any
time.
Move the pets outside as not all
buyers will be pet lovers while some
may suffer pet allergies putting them
off a house if they see a pet inside.
If parts of the house look tired,
consider renovating by painting
walls, replacing worn carpet, or
modernising the kitchen, bathroom
and toilet; rooms that should sparkle.
Replace tired cabinetry, or the benches
and cupboard/drawer fronts then
update old toilets, showers or kitchen
appliances. Modernising these rooms
can lift the final selling price.
Use consistent and light paint
colours throughout for balance and
seamlessness, making the house
appear more spacious. An effect that
is increased when walls and curtains
share the same or a similar colour.
Consider the personality and
purpose of a room. Bright colours
lift living areas especially if large and
open. However, bedrooms are suited
to calmer softer colours with just a
touch of bold. Layer bedding or use
throws for effect along with cushions
or a stuffed toy in a children’s room.
With curtaining, smaller patterns or
plain fabrics are the rule for smaller
rooms whereas larger patterns make
spacious areas cosier. If blinds or
drapes are past their best, replace these
even if it is only with neutral cotton
curtains. The effect will be worth it.
Eco-friendly features will also add
value for some buyers though not
universally, however earthy natural
colours and features are popular.
Consider who your target buyers are
likely to be and what will appeal to
them.
Move the pets outside
as not all buyers will
be pet lovers while
some may suffer pet
allergies

Incorporating show homes
in your planning process
There are many things to think about when you’re
considering building a new home.
11
Browsing show homes is a fantastic way
to get you thinking about practicalities,
needs, aesthetics and your wish list! Here
are a few consideration’s to help spark your
planning process.
• What is your exterior style? What kind
of homes do you like? Look around and
take a mental note of what you are drawn
to most.
• What kind of exterior materials do you
like? Once you’ve worked out the look
you like, research what materials are
available and find out about durability.
• How will you use your house? It’s
important to most people to have a good
indoor/outdoor flow and attractive,
sheltered outdoor living. Imagine your
home in various seasons.
• Landscaping is important. Look around
and consider what you like and don’t like.
Are you a structured formal garden type
or do you like a contemporary native
style?
• Sustainability and future-proofing
aren’t just buzzwords anymore. It’s
very important for your new home to
be environmentally friendly. Research
insulation requirements, solar hot water
heating, ventilation options and new
technology to ensure your home will be
affordable to run.
• Interior décor is really exciting. This is
where show homes can really help you get
to know current trends, colours, beautiful
furnishings and furniture. Collect home
magazines and figure out what you’d love
to emulate.
• Also, pause to give thought to
architectural components inside. Do you
remember a raised ceiling? What kind of
finishing do top homes use and which
styles are you drawn to?
• Heating is also a consideration. Have a
look at what show homes are offering.
• Kitchens form the heart of the house.
Show homes give you insight into the
latest styles, materials and storage
facilities available.
• Bathrooms are another big component.
They need to be as luxurious as you can
make them, so start dreaming.
Kitchens form the heart
of the house. Show
homes give you insight
into the latest styles,
materials and storage
facilities available.
Thinking about
selling?
I have had multiple enquiries from buyers wanting to
purchase a property between 1—4ha, either bare land
or with a dwelling. Located around Leeston, Southbridge
or Dunsandel.
Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
From cold house to cosy home:
How to heat your house for winter
pellet fire will have specific requirements
for set-up based on the quality of pellets
being used. Switching pellet brands can
cause the fire to burn too hot and set the
flue alight. Pellet fires are more hands on
than a heat pump, but not labour intensive
like chopping wood.
Central heating
There are two types of central heating:
the first requires a sub-floor or roof cavity
to locate a gas burner or heat pump air
handler (which distributes warm air
through a series of bulky, large sized
ducting); the other option uses warm
As the weather cools and the winter
winds see you hunting down warmer
spaces, taking stock of your home now
could make all the difference. Heating
Specialist Darren Munden from Mico
talked us through available heating
options. He said, “Be mindful of open plan
living and how your home is insulated.
We lose a lot of heat through windows, so
good joinery and furnishings will help.”
Heat pumps
Heat pumps are popular, accounting
for approximately 65% of market sales.
There are plenty of options suitable to
most budgets, and a multitude of install
companies with competitive pricing. Just
be sure to do your research; use someone
reputable. Heat pumps are an efficient
way of heating and positioning your heat
pump up high to blow the air down has a
double impact on your space. The bonus
is that you can cool your space on warmer
days. The cost to install can be higher if
you choose a unit above 5 kilowatts (you’ll
need a power upgrade) but because almost
every house has electricity, almost every
home can have a heat pump.
Wood fires
Fire is mesmorising. It creates ambience
and is great to snuggle up in front of. We’re
restricted to using ultra low emissions
models, so there are fewer options
available, but the Canterbury-made
Woodsman Serene is a good example. Lack
of competition means ultra low emissions
burners can be expensive. Be careful not to
burn wood that’s too wet (oils can
build up in your chimney and catch
alight) and don’t place flammable
items on or near the fire. The thing
to remember with a wood burner,
is you’ll need to chop the wood
yourself or pay to have it brought
in.
Gas
While still achieving the visual
that fire provides, the ‘one-button’
solution that a gas fire gives might
be the option for you. There are
many options on both price and
kilowatt, with add-on’s available to
heat more rooms. But burning gas
isn’t environmentally friendly, you’ll
need to flue it through your roof or
back wall, and you need gas ordered
and delivered.
Pellet fires
Pellet fires aren’t common
anymore and most aren’t being
replaced when they reach the end
of their life. They should only be
installed by a professional; each
water delivered from a water boiler
through pipes, into a concrete slab
or wall-mounted radiators. Central
heating is a quick, efficient way to
heat an entire home consistently,
with a button or time-programmed
controller thermostat. But for all
its efficiencies, central heating is a
less used solution; it can be difficult
to retrofit and has expensive install
costs compared to single-room
heating.
If you’re wondering where to
start, call Mico on 03 366 2464
or head into their showroom at
163 Montreal Street. Heating
consultants are available to assist.
