Bay Harbour News Wednesday March 24 2021 18 OPINION Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Coastal Pathway questions answered The Christchurch Coastal Pathway Group answers questions raised by members of the public at its stand at the recent Estuary Fest at Mt Pleasant Community Centre When will construction of the Moncks Bay section begin? The city council is project managing the construction of the pathway. It is hoping to get the tender process under way in May with the aim of beginning construction this winter. When will the Moncks Bay section be completed? As with all major construction projects, the time frame for the build is hard to predict. However, the city council is hoping to have the construction complete by winter 2022. How will the pathway work at the section where the yacht club boat shed is under construction? The coastal pathway group made a financial contribution to the construction of the new boat shed, thereby securing a right of way over a 4m wide strip of the platform for the pathway. Ramps at either end will connect the deck of the boat shed with the pathway. We expect that this deck will provide a pleasant stopping point for pathway users to enjoy one of the most picturesque parts of the pathway. Will the Moncks Bay section require a cantilevered platform? According to the city council traffic engineers, most of the existing road bed is wide enough to build a 4m coastal pathway as well as two car lanes and on-road cycle lanes. This will require some realignment of the road and speed limit changes. However, the section between the CYC Boatshed and Rapanui Shag Rock will be cantilevered in some places due to the limited road width available. At this stage there are no plans to install toilets anywhere on the Moncks Bay section. There are public toilets in Barnett Park, and the council is considering providing signage to direct pathway users there. How does the new cycle lane along Humphrey’s Drive work in with the Coastal Pathway? Currently there is a new section of cycleway being constructed along Linwood Ave to extend the Rapanui – Shag Rock cycle route. Once complete it will connect to Humphreys Drive via Charlesworth Reserve. This is a separate council project which also received “shovel ready” funding from central government. Each week, board members will discuss matters regarding the estuary, its rich history and what makes it unique. This week Bill Simpson writes about the history of Humphreys Drive YOU MAY have noticed the road works along Humphreys Drive alongside the Linwood Canal. This is another link in the city council’s Rapaki/Shag Rock cycleway to the city. We now accept that this road is a major route in and out of the city for bays residents. But it was not always so. Humphreys Drive was a latecomer as an estuary side road. Until the mid-1930s, Linwood Ave was a blind road which stopped at the estuary edge. The main route in and out of town was Ferry Rd. But in the Depression years, the council decided that relief workers could be used to connect Linwood Ave to the Ferrymead bridge. A local resident and developer Walter de Their offered rock from his quarry on St Andrews Hill and 2000 yards of rock were used. His land was also used as a base for the 70 or so workers, and for storing explosives. Another local businessman, George Humphreys, of Sumner, donated the use of two of his trucks along with drivers and free petrol. Humphreys was the founder of the wine and spirits merchants Fletcher Humphreys in Christchurch. He was also a director of the Canterbury Frozen meat Company and prominent in the Chamber of Commerce. He had a large estate near Sumner and also owned the land formerly occupied by the Zealandia Soap and Candle factory; that land is now part of the Charlesworth Wetland Reserve. Work began in 1933 and informally the road was referred to as either Estuary Rd or the Linwood Ave extension.
