The 28yearold is set to becomeone ofthe youngest show presidents when she presides over the Oxford A&P Show on Saturday, April 3. “Things do take abitlonger whenyou're ayoung mumand afarmer,but weare getting good atmultitasking,” Marie says.Having an engineer husband at home to take care of the farm machinery certainly helps. Andrew FitzPatrickwasraised on a sheep andbeeffarm at Fairlie. “I have averysupportive husband who has been able to look after the farm, and the machinery is getting alot bettertreated,”she says. “I canstill do thestock work, but Ican’t quite fit it all in.” ❛Our show has areally good committee, which is very supportive and quite young in comparison to other committees. ❜ Baby Margaretwillbebarely eightweeks old on show day, but has alreadybeenpresent forscanningattwo weeksold, weaningatfourweeks,and was“outandabout” at anonfarm heifer competition at six weeks. “She will know thatthe Angusisthebestbytheendof it,” Marie says. The family’sfarm, Timperlea Angus,has 120 studcowsand will host thethird onfarmbull sale in October. “It’svery exciting. It’s been very well supported and we’ve had some really good averages; and everyone seems to be pleased withourbulls.” Marie andAndrew also winter graze dairy cows for her —Marie FitzPatrick sisters and keep enough sheep “to train the dogs”. “Withthebaby around, the dogs are getting alotless attention thantheynormally do,soweneededthesheep to keep them busy.” Marie’s sisters, Victoriaand Hazel, andtheir respective partners GlenTraynerand Matt Clark, sharemilkfor their parents, Clarenceand Linda Timperley. TheTimperleyfamilywillbe well representedinthe crops andbaleageclasses,and the baking and jam classes, while Marie’s nieces will be competing in the highland dancing section, organised by her sister, Victoria. “The hay and baleage competition is going to be hotly contestedbyour family to see who’s going to win. “We’re all going to the show, so mum is on grandparent duty. Between us there’s seven grandkids.” Marieis partofayouthful presidentialteam,with senior vicepresident Letitia Schroeder (whowould have been president last year) and Steve Macauley bothunder40. “Weare really lucky. Our showhas areally good committee, which is very supportive and quiteyoungin comparison to other committees, so we will hopefully haveabit more longevity. “And we have an amazing secretaryin ChristineRoberts, who doesn’t want any more young mumsfor awhile.But we arereally luckytohaveher as sheruns it like awelloiled machine.” Dairy cattle to make awelcome return to show Dairy cattle will make a welcome return to the Oxford A&P Show on Saturday, April 3. While beef cattle made a return for the 2019 show, dairy cattle classes are being offered for the first time since the Mycoplasma bovis outbreak nearly four years ago, executive officer Christine Roberts says. ‘‘We are really grateful for the support that we’ve received from dairy exhibitors that have put their trust in us and are coming back to the show.’’ The relatively low numbers of dairy cattle means there will be plenty of room to spread out the cattle, to ensure no nosetonose contact. Dairy cattle classes were planned for last year’s show, which was cancelled because of Covid19. This year’s dairy cattle judge is making the trip down from the North Island, while the beef cattle judge is coming up from Southland.
