By DAVID HILL
Oxford AreaSchool’s
agricultural programme
continues to grow.
PrincipalMike Hart says the
The new course builds on the
youngfarmer competitions, the
school’s own futurefarmer
‘‘We are very excited to be
able to offer anew NCEA level
1course with amix of theory
and practical work,’’ Mr Hart
says.
The course has been
prepared by teacherJoseph
Burston and is supported by a
localfarmer, who has madehis
woolshed and part of his farm
available.
‘‘We are very lucky to have a
passionate teacher in Joseph
Burston,who is also afarmer of
goats,’’ Mr Hartsays.
‘‘He has come up with his
own vision and planneditout
and organised it. It takes the
passion of ateacher to make
thesethingswork becauseit
takesalot of extra hours.’’
The woolshed willbeused as
aclassroom, with students able
to apply their lessons into
making decisions aroundwhat
cropstoplant, stock to buy and
whether to repair fences.
‘‘It’s vital thatstudents can
applytheir knowledge and that
they make gooddecisions as
theirlegacywill be passedon
to next year’s group.’’
