Bhutan’s Air Network Expanded To <strong>Singapore</strong><br />

Tourists are now served by Bhutan’s national carrier Drukair<br />

From September 2012, passengers who wish to travel to Bhutan can<br />

now board the twice-weekly service between <strong>Singapore</strong> and the city of<br />

Paro. The new route via Kolkata, India, allows passengers to reach their<br />

destination in under six hours.<br />

Operating out of Changi Airport’s Terminal 1, Drukair is using the<br />

Airbus A319 aircraft in a two-class configuration with 20 business<br />

class seats and 94 economy seats. The flight arrives in <strong>Singapore</strong> from<br />

Paro at 3.15 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays, while the return flight<br />

from <strong>Singapore</strong> to Paro departs at 6 am on Thursdays and Sundays.<br />

On 28 August 2012, the inaugural flight touched down at Changi<br />

Airport with Her Royal Highness Princess Chimi Yangzom Wangchuck<br />

onboard, together with senior government officials from Bhutan. A<br />

celebratory reception hosted by Changi Airport Group (CAG) was held<br />

in the evening at Mandarin Oriental <strong>Singapore</strong>, with the Minister of<br />

Transport Lui Tuck Yew present.<br />

“We felt we’d be able to have better connectivity from <strong>Singapore</strong>. We<br />

have noticed a lot of tourists who come through <strong>Singapore</strong> to Bhutan,”<br />

said Tandin Jamso, Chief Executive Officer of Drukair. “Changi is a good<br />

hub as far as South-east Asia is concerned.”<br />

With Bhutan aiming to receive 100,000 visitors from <strong>Singapore</strong> a year,<br />

“Drukair is trying to increase flight frequencies and capacity by adding<br />

more aircraft,” said Mr Jamso. It will add Mumbai to its network by the<br />

year-end, and there are plans to add a third weekly service between<br />

<strong>Singapore</strong> and Paro in the second half of next year.<br />

<strong>dnata</strong> <strong>Singapore</strong> is proud to be the ground and cargo handling services<br />

provider for Drukair.<br />
