WELCOME...
The spirit of nationalism was
kindled among Nigerians last Monday
when Afrofusion pioneer, Burna Boy,
and Star Boy, Wizkid, won slots at the
63rd Grammy Awards which held in
Los Angeles, USA.
Nigerians, both at home and in the
diaspora, took to social media to
celebrate one of their own, standing in
brotherhood and, for once, forgetting
the differing “tribe and tongue” that
often stand as an albatross to our
unity.
Nigeria needs more wins and support in every sector; not just
in the music industry, but in sports, fashion, science and
technology, and indeed, every area where we bring our skills and
talent to bear.
The honour that Burna Boy and Wizkid has brought to
Nigeria and Africa should serve as incentive for government to
begin to pay greater attention to the entertainment industry and
to support the many talents that abound there. The Grammy
Awards is a big deal and after years of Nigerians being
nominated, we finally win.
Every good product worth exporting should be properly
packaged and showcased to the world like our cover personality,
Azeez Oladapo Yusuf, who is a fine export to the Gambia. He
talks about his life in Gambia with Yemisi Suleiman. Pg. 4-5.
where he stunned with a collection themed “Armageddon.”
2021/2022, was Lagos- based designer, Nazarene Amictus, who
stunned with his newest collection inspired by the present-day
series or turns of events. Tagged the Armageddon Collection,
designs and themes for this collection is symbolic of fabric colours,
patterns, texture, and style. It comprises of eight looks, with four looks for
men and four for women. Creative Designer Nazarene Amictus disclosed
“the Collection is built around eight Virtues namely; Atonement, Bravery,
Deception, Compassion, Purity, Truthful, Rebellious and Conceited.”
With each look ascribed to a virtue, the colours black and white as the
primary colours represent Good (White) and Evil (Black) and the constant
battle we face as persons of different characters. The design, Nazarene
Amitus says, is definitie of the brand’s harater, while the olours
represent its personality. March 21, 2021 / 3

INTERVIEW
AZEEZ OLADAPO YUSUF
A Proud Nigerian Export
Words By - Yemisi Suleiman
Azeez Oladapo Yusuf, is a serial entrepreneur and lawyer from Nigeria, but resides in the Gambia. He
is the CEO of SHAIDA and Sons International; a consortium of companies involved in hospitality,
oil and gas, real estate, entertainment amongst others.
Born in Lagos and armed with a determination to succeed, Aziz moved to the Gambia at a very young age,
where he started off as a refrigerator salesman. Today, he has excelled in running a number of businesses
successfully, including Big Apple Executive Lounge, the foremost centre of luxurious fine dining and
relaxation spot in the Gambia.
The dedicated businessman, husband and father, who clocked 50 this month, talks to Allure about life as
an international entrepreneur, his business ideology, success story, foray into politics and marriage
amongst others. Enjoy.
Congratulations on turning 50. How does it feel
to be 50?
There is a special feeling joining the league of
the half millennials. One is grateful for life. What
this is telling you is that you have crossed the
Rubicon sort of.
What would you say you have learned over the
years?
A lot of lessons. You can imagine someone
startin from a year old to fifty years you must
have gone through huddles, ups and downs.
When did you leave Nigeria for the Gambia and
what informed the choice to study law?
I left Nigeria in 1999/2000. I was in school
studying Computer Science but I left without
onludin the ourse then, beause it wasn’t
really what I wanted. I was also into the refrigerator
business which was lucrative at that time. When
I got to Gambia, the call to study Law came from
a particular problem. Apparently, there was an
issue with my son that had to do with the Law. That
was when I had the calling to study Law to defend
myself and help people.
Today, I have a chamber here in Nigeria called
YUSU A YUSU HABS. he first
YUSUF is my name and the second is my son
who is also a lawyer. I am currently working on
something big in Gambia in that regard too.
As someone who has experienced both
Nigeria and Gambia, what is the ease of doing
business in both countries?
It’s a bi hallene, espeially in ieria.
The Gambia is peaceful for me. For more than
years that I hae been in the Gambia, I’e not
witnessed a sinle unshot you won’t see anyone
in the Gambia hungry. They are very cheerful and
so loving. The system is working even though the
earnins an’t be ompared to ieria. han
God, we are not only in the Gambia, we spread
across other nations like Dubai, Turkey, England and
looking to go into Amsterdam as well. The Gambia
is onduie for business there is peae, no riots or
academic strikes.
What would you say about leadership between
the two countries?
Generally, we have leadership problems in
Africa. The problem is that the old goons must have
to take the backseat for the youths to come with
innoatie ideas and tae ieria forward. e an’t
keep doing what we have been doing in the 60s
and expect to get new results. The Gambia has
been in a dictatorship for 22 years and just got their
demoray but they respet all U treaties and
charters of freedom of expression—especially if you
are saying the right thing.
How were you able to cope or integrate into the
society as a young foreigner in Gambia?
The relationship between Nigeria and Gambia
has come a long way, far back pre-independence.
My father was a diplomat and was in Gambia in the
late ’s to ’s so it was not new to me. I hae a
brother of the same parent who an’t spea Yoruba
beause he has been there sine . Gambia is a
friendly country, fondly called the Smiling Coast, and
they are hospitable. It’s easy for a business to thrie
if you have a good business plan and you know
what you are doing because people there are not so
innovative, but when they see you doing something
they will do it too.
I remember years back when I started dealing in
solar euipment from the US I sold it in the Gambia.
I was well known, and then a lot of people started
doing it. That was when I took a break to go back
to school to get more knowledge and leverage over
certain things.
Your wife is also from Gambia, how did you meet
her?
She is Mariam Morenike Yusuf. My dad named
her Morenike. She was my employee who came
to work with me after high school. Our relationship
was purely professional until she left for England for
her studies. After I got divorced, I was looking for a
woman to marry and I remembered her as a young,
hardworking school girl then. So when we met on
Facebook again, during her MBA days, I proposed
to her. That was how it all started and it has been
from grace to grace. She is the pillar and Managing
Director of all my companies both in Nigeria and
Gambia.
How often do you visit Nigeria?
I am resident in Gambia where my family is. I
still hae a home in ieria I am in ieria almost
every two months except for the pandemic. I bank in
ieria I hae businesses and partners in ieria.
I was also a Chairman of a political party here in
ieria some years ba whih was when I tested
Nigerian politics. It was not easy as a newcomer but
now, I’m a ard arrier of a ery popular and biest
party in Afria. e are worin towards I hae
a candidate in mind.
Are you interested in an elective position?
Honestly, I don’t now for now. I hae no ambition.
I just want to be behind the scene following the
person that has the same ideology as mine and be
supportive.
ow wou you escrie your rs eerience in
politics?
Well, politics in Nigeria is very expensive. It is a
business where they have to sell their properties just
to contest and when they win, they take their money
back without helping the masses. I think politics
should not be made attratie we should o ba to
the old times of our ancestors, education and a good
name should be the hallmark of politics. There should
be a threshold of wealth/money to get before you can
oin politis that will disourae money moners. I’m
not rih but oay. I’m not entied by wealth, I want
a ood name and to help my onstitueny not to
4
enrich myself as most politicians do when they get
there. We have hooliganism in Nigeria, such is not
found in Gambia, so I don’t thin it’s safe for now.
If you are going to take a political shot, where will
it be, Ilorin or Lagos?
aos has been home to me for years so if I’m
oin to ontest, it will definitely to represent aos
Island or Alimosho Local Government where I lived
most of my life, or Iea. But also, I an’t rule out my
fatherland. I am a son of the soil in Kwara. I might
tae my shot from there too.
What is your belief about life?
My belief about life is to do good and get good.
What would you like to be remembered for?
The humane side of me and my humility.
Tell us about your passion for humanity?
I don’t hae a reistered harity oranisation
yet; I have chosen to remain anonymous for now.
Beause of my mother, I want to loo into sinle old
women beause in the Gambia, it’s the sinle women
who mae the eonomy wor. hey are inoled
in small-scale businesses and I was raised singlehandedly
by a struggling mother.
For now, I have made seven lawyers through the
scholarship grant-in-aid; I still have some others now
at the University of Gambia studying Law. We also
help a lot of people with medical assistance abroad.
Tell us a bit about your family and educational
background?
y father, Alhai Shafii Yusuf hailed from Ilorin,
wara State. y mum was from aos Island. y
parents had four hildren toether I’m the last of my
mother. I was born and bred in aos Island. I don’t
now muh about Ilorin. y mother was from the
Amodu family from Ofin area of aos Island. She
was the best mother ever.
I am the rand patron of the Yoruba ommunity
in The Gambia. Most of my businesses are in The
Gambia. I schooled and married from The Gambia. I
studied Law at the Gambia premier University beforeI
proeeded to the ierian aw Shool where I ot
alled to the Bar. After my B, I proeeded to the
lorida States Uniersity where I studied International
Human Rights. I also did a lot of small courses
in nery and so on. I’m married with ids and a
randson I’m a randfather lauhs.
over two thousand students under his care, under
his roof, where he feeds, clothes and gives them
education for free. These children are not related
to him, not from his tribe or religion, it goes beyond
our shores, to different parts of Africa. For one man
to tae this responsibility upon himself, what an
inspire me more than that?
Is Sen. Rochas your mentor?
Yes, he is.
What are your hobbies?
I love playing golf, I love playing with animals
and going to the beach.
What has been your winning factor in life?
here is this wathword I don’t oe with, that
you should be resilient, steadfast, and believe in
whateer you are doin. You should not do thins
to impress people, but do somethin that maes you
feel good. I believe as you grow, your zeal to achieve
INTERVIEW
your oals, if you’re the determined type inreases
with time. For me, being persistent has helped me to
grow.
How do you relax?
I love to spend time with my wife or at my lounge
Bi Apple in Gambia I lie to be there to wath the
services rendered by the employees and correct
what needs to be corrected. I love meeting people
too.
We know you’re such a fashion connoisseur?
hat’s true, I’m partiular about fashion. y
brands are Stefano ii, urti, Gianni, ouis uitton.
I am trendy and don’t oe about fashion. I’m more of
a asual person thouh, but I’m learnin how to wear
more of traditional attires now.
Your advice to young aspiring entrepreneurs,
who look up to you?
hateer you are doin be persistent, don’t let
anyone tell you that you annot do it, ust beliee in
yourself and eep doin it.
What inspires you in life generally?
It’s easy for a
business to
thrive if you
have a good
business plan
and you know
what you are
win for his generation of Africans allover
the world and a great hope that no matter
Reacting to the win, multi-talented disc
jockey, DJ Spinall, described the feat as an
opportunity opened up to the whole African
continent, adding that the artiste, who lost
to Kidjo at the 62nd Grammys in 2020, has
63RD GRAMMY: FANS WORRY
OVER WIZKID’S FAILURE TO SAY
‘THANK YOU’
Days after the 63rd Grammy Awards from
which superstar singer Wizkid, christened Ayodeji
Balogun, was honoured for his feature on the
Beyonce-led song “Brown Skin Girl” and also
celebrated by many Nigerians, fans are worried over
his inability to express gratitude.
While some excused the Ojuelegbe-crooner,
saying he already retweeted the Recording
Aademy’s tweet whih announed his win, others
said he probably did not consider himself a winner
and therefore, saw no reason to show gratitude or
even celebrate; unlike Burna Boy who has thrown
series of parties since then.
One of them, a twitter user, @Mbahdeyforyou,
said: “...he’s yet to thank his fans and appreciate all
celebs who congratulated him; that’s discouraging.
The least he can do is tweet an “appreciation
message” to his fans. He should normalise
saying “thanks y’all.”
Another user, @De_ _Khali, reacting to the
omment, said the artiste nows he didn’t win
anything but is just a middleman; hence he
sees no reason to appreciate anyone since
he will only et a ertifiate for featurin in the
Brown Skin Girl.
